"The ore deposit mined by Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is one of the numerous nickel-copper sulphide bodies marginal to the large oystershaped mass of differentiated norite in the Sudbury district, famous as the world's most important nickel producing field. The unique character of the ore deposits of the district has resulted in its intensive geological study over a period of more than 50 years. The results of these studies have given rise to a voluminous geological literature and to a great deal of controversy as to the genesis of the ores. This description of the structural geology at the Falconbridge mine is presented in the hope that it may form a small part of the chain of evidence leading to a reasonably satisfactory explanation of the ore genesis.The mine, named after Falconbridge township in which the deposit occurs, lies along the southeast margin of the norite mass, which, however, is h::re concealed beneath a deep mantle of glacial sands and gravels averaging over 100 feet in thickness. As a consequence, the deposit was not discovered by the early prospectors, and it was not until 1916-17 that E. J. Longyear, of Minneapolis, located the ore by drilling(ll). The discovery was foreshadowed in 1899 by the work of Thomas A. Edison, who found indications of the deposit by what is believed to have been a combination of magnetic and electrical geophysical surveys. He sank a prospect shaft over what has to date proved to be the largest and richest ore section in the mine. A wet quicksand layer at the rock surface proved impenetrable, however, and the 'Edison' shaft never reached bed-rock.The Falconbridge property was acquired by the Lindsley interests in 1928, and ore output, since its inception in 1929, has gradually risen from a modest beginning to the present 2,000 tons and more daily. Total production in this period is 7,500,000 tons of ore averaging 1.72 per cent nickel and 0.89 per cent copper, together with a small but valuable content of precious metals, principally of the platinum group."

For various reasons, molten salts, mainly chlorides and fluorides, are used in the aluminum industry. In the holding and melting furnaces, these salts may have different roles such as protecting the metal from oxidation, reducing the metal content of the skim or removing inclusions or impurities from the metal bath. However, the use of these salts may also have some undesirable effects such as easy attack of the furnace lining refractory materials by molten aluminum. The aim of the present investigation was to clarify and to compare the effects of chloride versus fluoride salts, on the corrosion process of the aluminosilicate based refractory materials. A laboratory test and procedure, simulating the conditions at the metal line in the aluminum treatment furnaces, was used. Different aluminum alloys (A1-5wt.%Mg, A1-5.5wt.%Zn and 7075 alloy) and chloride or fluoride salts (MgC12, KC1, CaCl2, NaC1, MgF2, CaF2, NaF and cryolite) were used as well as several aluminosilicate materials. Thermogravimetric measurements were also carried out in order to analyze the effect of the salts on the oxidation of molten aluminum alloys. The experimental results showed that fluoride salts are more aggressive than chlorides against the tested refractory products. It is postulated that the fluorides prevent the formation of a protective oxide layer on the metal surface, favoring at the same time the corrosion of refractories. Moreover, it was found that the presence of Na in fluoride salts increases significantly the aggressiveness of the aluminum alloy towards the refractory samples.

The Roy Lloyd Mine in northern Saskatchewan is a high-grade underground gold mine which is currently supplying ore to Golden Band Resources Inc. (Golden Band)?s Jolu mill. Prior to the operation of the mine, an underground exploration program was conducted intermittently at the site. During both the underground exploration phase and mining, Golden Band has implemented water recycling to reduce freshwater usage within the mine in order to address concerns over the potential for impacts associated with freshwater usage and to reduce the volume of effluent discharged from the site. Golden Band initiated an underground exploration program at the Roy Lloyd Mine site (formerly called the Bingo Project) in October 2007 to better delineate the mineralization of the Bingo gold deposit. The exploration program provided geological information required in order to improve the confidence level of the geological resource model and also provided information to aid in the mining of the deposit, such as the determination of groundwater inflow rates. Underground production mining started in March 2011. This paper provides an overview of the mine water recycling methods implemented at the site during both the exploration and initial mining phases of the project, and the success/drawbacks of these measures to date, including the potential cost savings in the form of reduced treatment and monitoring costs inherent in a reduction of the volume of effluent discharged from the site. The paper will also discuss options that are currently being evaluated in order to further assist Golden Band?s ability to recycle water and reduce the volume of effluent discharged to the environment, while ensuring effluent discharged from the site to the environment meets criteria.

"Madawaska Mines produces a uranium precipitate (83-85% u3o8) using a magnesium oxide slurry to precipitate the uranium from solution. The solution, at approximately 9""0 g/l u3o8 is neutralized to a pH of 7.0. At the Eldorado Nuclear Refinery in Port Hope, the precipitate is not acceptable as a single feed to the refinery process. It was discovered that a 2% silica impurity caused emulsion problems in the solvent extraction column.After extensive studies of possible solutions, such as two-stage precipitation and solvent extraction, an acceptable solution was found. The selective precipitation of uranium at a pH of 3.5-4.0 using Hydrogen Peroxide produces an almost silica free product of higher purity (90-93% u3o8) to that of straight magnesium oxide precipitation. Introduction Madawaska Mines Limited is located four miles southwest of Bancroft, Ontario. The annual production of u3o8 is approximately 610,000 pounds. To produce the final product or yellowcake, nine separate steps are required. These are (1) grinding, (2) dewatering, (3) leaching, (4) acid filtration, (5) clarification, (6) ion exchange, (7) precipitation, (8) washing, and (9) drying and packaging. To illustrate these steps, a complete flowsheet of the mill is displayed on page three.The yellowcake is sent to Eldorado Nuclear Limited in Port Hope, Ontario for further concentrating and refining. As part of their routine specification check, a test called the amenability test is performed. This test indicates how a particular dissolved yellowcake product reacts to solvent extraction. The Madawaska yellowcake did not pass the test."

Mineral exploration and research has led to the identification of four types of tungsten mineralization in the NE-trending, Iargelyensialic, inland branch of the late Proterozoic/early Paleozoic Pan-African Damara Orogen. The mineralization (mainly scheelite) occurs in a terrane (the Central Zone) that is characterized by multiple deformation, greenschist/amphibolite-facies metamorphism and numerous peraluminous S-type granitic and pegrnatitic intrusions. The four major types of scheelite mineralization are (in ascending stratigraphic order of host rock): (1) thin (5 cm to 2 meter) quartz+plagioclase+diopside ± scapolite calc-silicate granofels with fmely disseminated scheelite (scheelite-bearing granofels; SBG) developed as discontinuous intercalations within the calc-silicate rocks of the Khan, Spes Bona, Oberwasser and Kuiseb Formations (Nosib and Swakop Groups); (2) gamet+pyroxene± vesuvianite+scheelite ± fluorite replacement skarns hosted by Okawayo, Karibib and lower Kuiseb Formation marbles in the aureoles of late tectonic, unrnineralized leucogranites; (3) metaturbidite-hosted scheelite- (and possibly wolframite-) bearing tourmalinites, both stratiform and crosscutting, in the Kuiseb Formation located in the 'cleavage fronts' of late tectonic granitoids; (4) scheelite-bearing vesuvianite+quartz+garnet skarnoid rocks (several hundred meters in length) in the calcareous metaturbidites of the upper Kuiseb Formation. These scheelite occurrences were discovered by the follow-up of a large number of tungsten anomalies located during a regional stream sediment sampling program. Detailed mapping, ultra-violet surveys and rock sampling proved to be the most effective surface exploration techniques for locating mineralization; soil sampling and geophysics were of almost no use. The largest, continuous scheelite-bearing skarn of economic interest, Otjua, has a drill-indicated reserve of 250 000 tonnes at 0.53 wt5 WO3 and 8 wt% CaF2•

The In order to mine safely with reasonable cost, it is necessary to research the fracture characters of backfill and its matches with rock mass. Four kinds backfill with cement-tailing ratio of 0.250, 0.125, 0.100 and 0.083 respectively were tested, and basing on stress-strain curves tested, the deformation characters and fracture laws as well as the damage constitutive equations investigated with damage mechanics whose calculating results are coincided with experiment results well were proposed. The results of damage analysis show that there have different damage characters in different backfill, e. g. the lower the ratio of cement to tailings the lower the damage values when stresses reach to peak value; the lower the content of cement the more rapid in damage and the more abrupt in breakage process. In addition, using catastrophe theory, an energy model was proposed for backfill and rock mass acted each other in mechanics, and the unstable condition of the system was obtained. Research results show that the higher is the stiffness of rock mass the more stable the system, and the lower is the ratio of cement to tailings, the more unstable the system will be. Further more, according to the catastrophe model proposed, the reasonable matches between backfill and rock mass were researched, and a calculation formula that designs reasonable strength of backfill during mining was put forward. It has been proved by practice that the model and theory researched in this paper can guide filling design in mining. Highland Valley Copper is a large, open-pit copper mine in the southern interior of British Columbia. Reclamation has been in progress on the site since 1987. Some 6,300 hectares will have been disturbed at the end of the mine?s life, the majority of which will eventually be reclaimed. The establishment of vegetation and the development of a self-sustaining vegetative cover are the central components of the mine?s reclamation plan. The present vegetation-monitoring program for the reclaimed area represents a significant commitment of resources and only addresses a small portion of the site each year. In an effort to expand the area surveyed while improving the efficiency of the monitoring, the use of remote sensing is being investigated. Airborne multispectral imagery was acquired in the summer of 2001, and the results of the multispectral classification were compared to ground observations made during the routine 2000 and 2001 monitoring program. A thematic map with 17 vegetation classes was produced. Within the vegetation classes, there was a strong spectral separation between ? dry grasses? and ?legumes? with further separation according to their density. Green biomass could also be quantified remotely across a wide variety of vegetation types. During summer 2002, further aerial imagery was acquired in combination with a targeted ground-truthing program to determine characteristic vegetation types associated with recognized spectral signatures, which can be used in a supervised classification. It is anticipated that after some fine-tuning, it will be possible to shift the ground-sampling effort from areas where the aerial classification confidence is high to more complex areas.

The preparation of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-monolayer-protected clusters (PNIPAM-MPC) of gold nanoparticles was carried out in a homogeneous phase using three ways, in which three types of PNIPAM ligands were employed. The first type comprised of PNIPAMs with narrow molar mass distributions, synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and thus, bearing a dithiobenzoate at the chain end. These polymers were used directly to passivate the gold nanoparticles upon the Schiffrin reaction in a one-pot synthesis. The second type of ligands was derived from the first one through hydrazinolysis, and they therefore contained a thiol end group. The third type of ligands was PNIPAMs obtained through conventional radical polymerization, post-modified to contain thiol end groups. The PNIPAM-MPCs were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and by dynamic light scattering. The one-pot synthesis utilizing the ligands of the first type turned out to be a simple and facile method, compared with the other two ways, with which the size of the gold nanoparticles can be easily manipulated mainly by adjusting the molar ratios of PNIPAM / HAuCl4. PNIPAM is a more efficient ligand to stabilize the gold nanoparticles in water and in organic solvents than alkanethiols. The surface density of PNIPAM chains ranged from 1.8 to 3.6 chain/nm2, which is much lower than that typical for alkanethiols. The thickness of a PNIPAM monolayer bound to the gold core is somewhat larger than the size of the random coil of corresponding free PNIPAM in aqueous solution, which suggests that the conformation of a PNIPAM chain bound to the gold core is to extended.

"General purpose uniprocessor systems used in control applications, however fast they may be, at a certain stage attain saturation, forcing the user or designer to consider other avenues for solving the problem. This paper gives a broad overview of multiprocessing with special reference to transputers. Virtually all aspects, from parallel systems real-time control to artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems, have been highlighted. The application of transpurters in unilayer and multilayer control are discussed in detail, with specific attention to sensor integration. Two case studies describe at length the utilization of transputers. IntroductionIn conformance with the high level taxonomy of parallel computer architectures as given by Ralph Duncan(l) (an improvement to Flynn's classification, which maintains the essential elements of useful taxonomy based on instructions and data streams), the MlMD architectures are categorized into two groups: (I) shared memory, and (2) distributed memory type. While the shared memory multiprocessors are more popular than the message-passing multiprocessors because they can be programmed in a conventional sequential fashion, their aspect of the architecture creates a perfonnance bottleneck. In contrast, message-passing multiprocessors (MPM) suffer from no such limitation and can attain linear speed increases that are directly proportional to the number of processors put into use. The MPM implementation also has its own advantages and disadvantages. Because the performance of the system is heavily dependent on it, the interconnection strategy in a distributed memory MIMD machine is of paramount importance. The transputer(2.J), a multiprocessor node of the distributed memory type, is becoming very popular. The advantages offered by the transputer make its application in the mining and processing industries very promising."

"The Davy McKee combined mixer-settler (CMS), is a liquid-liquid contactor, which has been commercially applied to the recovery of uranium from dilute sulphuric acid-bearing leach liquors. CMS differs from most other solvent extraction systems in that the mixing and separation of the phases is carried out in the same vessel.IntroductionTypical solvent extraction plants for the recovery of uranium operate at organic to aqueous feed flow ratios of 1 : 2 to 1 : 30. Because it is beneficial to mix the organic and aqueous phases at an organic/aqueous (O / A) ratio of between I : 2 and 2 : I there is incompatibility between the over-all and operating O /A ratios.Conventional mixer-settler designs require an external recycle of the minority flow which results in the possibility of over-mixing, increased settling requirements and entrainment losses. Other workers have approached this problem in terms o f enhanced sett ling and this has been partly successful.Davy McKee's approach involved a radical rethink of the principles of liquid-liquid contact and separation.Description of CMSThe CMS has the important advance that the required mixing O/A ratio can be achieved without external recycle and is not affected by the O /A ratio of the feeds. Three zones co-exist within the CMS unit-a central mixing zone and upper and lower separation zones. A pump impeller on a draught tube is installed within the mixing zone and baffles are installed above and below the mixing zone. The mixer that is commonly encountered in hydro metallurgical operations consists of a single turbine and tank combination. However, it would be advantageous to examine some common solvent extraction mixing systems in the light of the fundamentals of chemical reactor design. The basic concepts of reactor design are commonly used in the chemical industry, and it should not be too difficult to apply them to solvent extraction. The factors that affect the engineering design of a reactor are: the reacting system; the type of reaction; and the configuration of the reactor. The reaction system in solvent extraction consists of a heterogeneous liquid phase, involving two immiscible liquids. It is essential f or the process that the reactor product can be separated efficiently in the subsequent settler. The type of reaction in solvent extraction system may be quite complex, and the picture is complicated by the presence of competing and side reactions. The reactors themselves have been generally continuous stirred tanks, and the nature of the mixer-settler makes it unlikely that the pumping mixer can be dispensed with. However, it appears that there should be some definite advantages to a system of stirred reactors in series. The kinetic experiments which are carried out should have the definition of optimum reaction conditions as one of their goals. The data obtained from these experiments must also be applicable to the design of reaction equipment. Reactor selection and design is often a unique problem for each chemical process, and does not lend itself to a systematic general approach. However, the application of chemical and physical principles to mixer design in solvent extraction should result in practical, more efficient plants.

"INTRODUCTIONInco Ltd. has ten operating mines in the Sudbury district. Over the last ten years mining methods have changed at Inco with special emphasis on the introduction of bulk mining replacing conventional mechanized cut-and-f ill and undercut-and-fill methods. At the same time, the technology and size of LH D equipment has also progressed to meet the demands of bulk mining. This paper will concentrate on various aspects of the introduction and operation of electric LHD equipment a t Inco Limited, Ontario Division. BackgroundInco Limited received its first electric 2 cu. yd capacity LHD in July 1975 at Creighton Mine. The unit was tested pulling shrinkage stope muck and then was moved to a mechanized cut and- fill complex on 6600 Level. The electric scooptram received quick acceptance from the operators, due to its quiet operation and low heat generation, in a relatively hot operating environment. Although there are only two of these units operating a t present, this initial favourable experience, both in cost and efficiency, led to the development and purchase of electric scooptrams of the 5 cu. yd size. There are currently eleven 5 cu . yd electric LHDs in operation.The most recent development a t Inco is the move to yet larger electric LHDs in the 8 cu. yd size. The first electric ""Eight"" has now been in operation at Copper Cliff South Mine for over a year. This unit has the distinction of being the first one of its kind in service in North America. At the time of writing, there were ten 8 cu. yd electric ma chines operating in Inco's Ontario Division Mines, with three on order."

"This paper describes a methodical approach to the estimation of the orientation and the magnitude of in-situ stresses. The study was performed at the Ruttan Mine, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. , a 6,000 T.P.D. underground operation, located in northern Manitoba, Canada. It involves an initial estimate to be made based upon: structural interpretation • virgin stress measurements conducted in other areas (world wide, regional)The verification of the prevailing stress regime was made by conducting CSIRO hollow inclusion(1) overcoring measurements. The current cost for a virgin stress determination is about $7000 per measurement(2) and the difficulty encountered in attaining a good reading is high. This paper will describe the analytical procedures employed at Ruttan in evaluating the in-situ stress magnitude and orientation based on three overcore tests. It is proposed to perform an additional six measurements in order to verify the following results:Vertical stress = av (MPa) = 0.027 by depth (m)Major principal stress = o! "It is difficult to know how much environmental information is absorbed by those in a position to put it to use. The following information may seem like ""old stuff"" to those whose companies are taking steps to improve their environmental performance. This paper is directed in particular to those people who are interested in determining what further changes are required to make improvements as concerned environment citizens.IntroductionUntil recently, the author was comfortable with the fact that none of the operations for which he was responsible had any environmental charges against them. It was not until one of his operations was charged with non-compliance that the author discovered due diligence as a way to avoid a second charge, and when an unfortunate spill occurred at another operation, the meaning of risk prevention was learned. Knowledge was gained step by step to the point where finally environmental information is being heeded, rather than waiting to learn from sad experience. With the appreciation of what it takes to do a good environmental job, comes an understanding of the challenge that lies ahead, and the fact that there is a lot to learn.At a recent environmental gathering, comments from the participants varied considerably. Some just didn't understand why government was being so unreasonable, while at the other end of the spectrum one individual whose company was well along the path to becoming a good environmental citizen remarked that it was all very basic. What was immediately understandable to one went right over the heads of others, indicating the different stages that have been attained in the acceptance of environmental responsibilities."

"Sherritt's zinc pressure leaching process converts zinc sulphide concentrates directly to zinc sulphate solutions and elemental sulphur. Thus, one pressure process step replaces both the roasting and leaching operations of the conventional roast-leach route. In addition, high single-pass extractions eliminate the need for residue treatments to recover unleached zinc. Because pressure leaching produces elemental sulphur, rather than sulphur dioxide, acid plants and smoke stacks are not required, and air pollution control and work-place hygiene are greatly improved. .In 1977, Cominco Ltd. and Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited jointly operated a three-tonne-per-day pilot plant to demonstrate pressure oxidative leaching of Sullivan zinc concentrate and the subsequent separation of elemental sulphur. The process consisted of regrinding the concentrate, continuous leaching at 150°C at elevated oxygen pressures in a four compartment autoclave and the subsequent recovery of elemental sulphur, either in the molten liquid form from a decantation autoclave or as a flotation concentrate. Of the zinc contained in the concentrate, 97% was extracted in 90 minutes, and 96% of the sulphur was converted to the elemental form.Following the successful pilot campaign, Cominco began building the world's first commercial zinc pressure leaching plant. This plant, which was in operation by late 1980, will eventually treat about 25% of Cominco's planned zinc capacity of270,000 tonnes per year.This paper describes the general process principles, the results obtained from the pilot plant and the integration of the process into Cominco's operations at Trail. The application of pressure leaching to a ""grass-roots"" plant is also discussed, and compared with conventional roast-leaching."

"This paper tells the story of how the Dome Mine in South Porcupine increased its maintenance effectiveness and reduced its maintenance costs in two phases. In the first phase, a maintenance audit was conducted, and the results led to some changes that improved maintenance, especially in the underground equipment area. The audit methods, and the changes made will be reviewed. In the second phase, management made changes in the maintenance organization and methods, following a prolonged strike during which management operated the mine. These changes were in part the result of insights learned from their hands-on operating experience. IntroductionEarly in 1989 the Dome Mine of Placer Dome Inc. in South Porcupine, Ontario, decided to improve the effectiveness of the Plant Department. The Plant Department was centralized, except for a mill mechanical crew, and serviced all operations, a townsite of 120 houses, a curling rink, and an arena. The department also operated the powerhouse, the hoists, the mine dry and provided mechanical/ electrical engineer services.At that time the Dome Mine, located in the east end of the city of Timmins and Canada's first large gold mine originally discovered in 1909, was producing about 3500 tons of ore per day with about 742 employees. Over the 83 years of continuous operation of Dome over 50 million short tons of gold ore have been processed. The Plant Department consisted of 156 hourly and 24 staff employees. At present, the mine is producing 4000 tons of ore per day with a total of 341 employees on the payroll. The Plant Department consists of 80 hourly-rated and 18 staff employees."

"This paper presents the design and application of blasthole mining to an area at Strathcona Mine previously employing post pillar cut-and-fill. Extensive mining in the area had led to gradually deteriorating ground conditions and post pillar stoping was no longer considered acceptable. Alternative methods had to be investigated.Conventional methods for mining in poor ground were rejected because of the high cost. Blasthole mining was selected because iI offered good productivity and safety with acceptable costs. The design of this approach involved field investigations and the use of numerical modelling to simulate the different blasthole options and their impact on ground stability. The blasthole design incorporated reinforcement with cablebolts, use of a radio-controlled remote LHD unit, large-diameter holes, blast design and wall control. Potentially unstable areas were outlined during mining with ground monitoring instruments and the results used to modify mining plans during the production phase.IntroductionIn underground metal mines there is a need to improve safety and productivity and lower mining costs in order to maintain reasonable rates of return on investment. This requires the application of good engineering design to both mine planning and ground control in order to optimize production and costs and to forecast potential problems during mining. The task becomes more important when extensive mining leads to gradually deteriorating ground conditions, making existing mining methods and techniques no longer acceptable from a safety point of view. Alternative mining methods must, however, be sufficiently productive to ensure profitability. This paper presents an example of the engineering design and operating approach used by Falconbridge in dealing with such a situation at Strathcona Mine."

"PEC uranium deposit, 100 km southwest of Coppermine, was discovered by diamond drilling in 1976 following ground and airborne geophysical surveys, geological mapping, geochemical surveys and boulder prospecting that were initiated as the result of the discovery of uraniferous sandstone outcrops in 1969 by geologists of Aquitaine Company of Canada Ltd.The deposit is within gently northeasterly dipping medium to coarse-grained Unit 11 quartzitic sandstone of Neohelikian Dismal Lakes Group. The deposit is from 10 m to 70 m above the base of the sandstone which, beneath the deposit, non-conformably overlies weathered and altered Aphebian granite of Great Bear Batholith or unconformably overlies rubble breccia, conglomerate and medium-grained Unit 8 sandstone of Paleohelikian Hornby Bay Group.A northeasterly trending, 500 m wide graben, bounded by the steeply dipping northeasterly striking Imperial and Aquitaine faults, contains the deposit which is 1.1 km long by up to 340 m wide. The deposit overlies a post-Hornby Bay Group, pre-Dismal Lakes Group topographic high. Uranium principally occurs as stratabound, often peneconcordant bands; a lesser amount of uranium is fracture controlled.Stratabound uranium exists in gently easterly dipping, subparallel bands ranging in thickness from 1.5 m to 6.0 m. Pitchblende, coffinite and sooty black uranium oxides occur as interstitial disseminations and grain coatings subparallel to bedding; they also replace pyrite and form narrow veinlets.Small amounts of torbernite, carnotite and cuprosklodowskite coat pitchblende and are disseminated within mineralized bands. Pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, cove/lite, digenite, azurite, malachite, arsenopyrite, glaucodot, niccolite, bravoite (? ), goethite, hematite and magnetite as well as quartz, barite, calcite, biotite, chlorite and clay minerals exist within the mineralized bands. Uranium grades of 0.1 % to 0.3 % U3O8 over thicknesses of 1 m to 2 m are typical.A steeply dipping fracture zone near the Imperial fault contains sooty black uranium oxides, torbernite, carnotite and cuprosklowdowskite as well as sulphides, cobalt arsenides, quartz and carbonate. The zone may reach 70 m long; its true width is about 1.9 m. Uranium grades range up to 5.18% up, over0.9m.Pitchblende and coffinite from PEC deposit have been dated at 1.08 ± .10 Ga with possible remobilization at .45 Ga. The deposit contains an inferred 3,150 tonnes of U3O8."

At last year's Annual Meeting a paper by Haultain and Johnston was presented entitled Is the Gold in Tellttrides Soluble in Cyanide? Since then the writer has continued the study of various phases of this problem. Samples and specimens of ore from some of the Kirkland Lake mines have been studied and non gold-bearing tellurides have been found in these that are not soluble in ordinary mill solutions. Samples of tailings, both old and recent, from this district have been examined with apparatus and methods that have proved very successful in detecting the presence of extremely minute quantities of tellurides. Tellurides, both base-metal and gold-bearing, have been discovered in these tailings, but only in such minute quantities that their presence would not affect the ordinary assay results. More free gold particles have been found in the tailings than gold-bearing tellurides. Much experimental work has been done on tellurides, concentrated from high-grade material and from ordinary run-of-mine ore. The gold-bearing tellurides behave very much as does gold itself. Finely divided particles are dissolved fairly rapidly, coarser particles more slowly. All the tellurides are soft and brittle and also have a high specific gravity, with the result that they are extremely finely divided in ordinary mill practice. The ordinary high-lime solution of Kirkland Lake practice is suitable for the dissolving of the gold tellurides. Oxygen is necessary, but apparently not more so than in dissolving gold. Some particles have been found that appear under the microscope to be ordinary metallic gold particles, but on heating they show a small telluride content. These appear to dissolve more slowly than gold. There is considerable variation in the ratio of tellurides to gold from different points in the mines. So far the writer has failed to find any connection between this ratio and the richness of the ore. Generally speaking, the base-metal tellurides predominate. Some of these contain gold but this may be due to a mixture of tellurides in the one particle.
