The present work describes a study of the separation of terbium and dysprosium from heavy RE concentrate through a solvent extraction circuit in a counter-current system. As the efficiency of the REE extraction by acid extractants rises with the increase of the atomic number of the element, the aim of this work is to extract the elements with higher atomic number maintaining Tb and Dy in the aqueous phase. Thus, terbium was separated first with subsequent separation of dysprosium. The experiments were carried out by using IONQUEST®801 as the extractant and a REE-hydrochloric liquor as feed solution. The optimum operational circuit in terbium separation was comprised of 37 stages: extraction, scrubbing, stripping, and solvent washing. For the dysprosium separation 39 stages were required. Terbium separation over 92% with over 95% purity and a Dy separation over 97% with over 95% purity were obtained.

"An acidic chloride leach solution was generated from the treatment of an ore containing the following value elements: silver, gold, indium, gallium, copper, zinc and lead. Iron was also co-extracted into solution as a ferric chloride species. Iron extraction was a significant component of the overall acid consumption of the leaching process. The recovery of iron by solvent extraction and water stripping was investigated. Tri-butyl-phosphate (TBP) was very effective at recovering iron from the leachate. The water strip solution could be decomposed to produce ferric oxide (hematite) and hydrochloric acid for recycle via hydrothermal hydrolysis or pyrohydrolysis.INTRODUCTION The Malku Khota deposit is situated in the eastern part of the Bolivian Altiplano at elevations between approximately 3,800 and 4,580 meters above sea level (Figure 1). The project is located 98 km east-southeast of Oruro, and 85 km south of Cochabamba in a relatively remote area."

The control of carbon concentration in a counter current carbon absorption circuit is critical to optimise gold recovery. MINTEK has developed a carbon movement controller to address this potentially problematic area in gold extraction. This controller reduces operator interaction by automating carbon movement. Elution schedules are entered into the control system, which then moves the carbon through the circuit into the first adsorption tank until enough carbon is available for elution. This is done while maintaining the specified carbon profile within the circuit. MINTEK has also developed an online-carbonconcentration- meter to measure carbon concentration in pulp. The meter uses an ultrasonic measurement technique. Long term testing has shown the measurement to be robust and require minimal maintenance. Results from a gold mine in South Africa’s well known Witwatersrand gold producing area has shown a decrease in soluble gold loss between 30 - 50% when the controller was used.

"Sulphide ores under certain circumstances will react with explosives to generate an autocatalytic chemical reaction. This reaction is exothermic and results in the production of large volumes of poisonous gases and creates an unsafe, unstable condition with the possibility of a low energy deflagration or even a detonation of the loaded hole. This paper outlines the conditions that need to exist for such a reaction to take place and the precautions necessary to minimize or eliminate the problem in areas of reactive ore. A special case study involving a northern Ontario mine will be detailed.IntroductionOne of North America's leading underground gold producer's processes over 6500 tonnes of ore per day from an orebody containing high concentrations of sulphides. After six years of problem free operation, the mine experienced two serious reactions in two months between the sulphides and AMEX II, the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil explosive it uses."

This paper examines manning best practice in the Australian mining industry. In particular, the paper considers a range of mining operations and their manning levels as measured by operational benchmarking. The benchmarking results presented cover 15 open pit and 37 underground studies in Australia. The data was collected as part of AMC?s benchmarking and operational improvement studies conducted between 1999 and 2008. The results examine overall manning levels in mining, processing and administration functions. Manning levels for a range of mining methods, including open pit and underground methods, are segmented. Productivity measures such as ore tonnes per man day and metres developed per man day are presented and where direct relationships can be established, the relationships are described. Finally, the paper considers perspectives on best practice with regard to manning in the Australian mining industry and the limitations in application of this type of analysis in a global context.

Since mid-1989, Cambior has increased its producing gold mines from four to six, having acquired the Chima Mine and brought the Silidor Mine onstream. In June 1990, the company announced that the Mouska project would also be put into production. Gold production reached almost 190 000 ounces in 1989 and is expected to exceed 220 000 ounces this year. Cambior has also a non-gold operation with an interest of 50% in the Niobec Mine and has recently signed an option agreement in the development of the Lac Knife graphite deposit in northeastern Quebec. During the past year, the company has extended its exploration activities to the United States and Indonesia, and now has interests in nearly 80 properties. Last May, Cambior signed an option agreement with Golden Star for a gold deposit in Guyana, the OMAI Project, containing at least 2 000 000 ounces of gold in situ.

"Surface crown pillars are important Canadian,mining structures. Mines operating in the Canadian Shield usually have several, forming a first line of protection from surface elements.Detailed technical information from twenty-four Canadian hard rock mines show that the deposits dip steeply and are generally either single or multiple veins. Considerable overburden usually cap the deposits. The rock mass is often altered and intersected by important discontinuities.The designs for these types of pillars lack basic data and are based on experience rather than a scientific approach. Regardless of the competence of the rock mass, the surface crown-pillar thickness to width ratios (an unscientific design tool used by the industry) are usually less than five. Rock bolting is, in almost every case, used as a support measure. However, there are many openings neither backfilled nor monitored.The characteristics of openings with surface crown pillars are also examined."

The Al-Mg-Sc-Zr alloys have shown exceptional potential as structural materials for transportation applications. These alloys have proved to be good candidates to be processed as thin strips via the Horizontal Single Belt Casting (HSBC) process. The HSBC process is a near-net-shape casting technology, which involves casting molten metal directly into thin strips, close to the final product thickness, at high cooling rates. It offers an efficient, economical and environmentally-friendly approach to the production of metal strips. Fluid mechanics and associated heat transfer are important aspects of any casting process, and the novel HSBC process is no exception. Three dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using ANSYS FLUENT 14.5 were performed, in order to assess the importance and effects of the various operational conditions of the HSBC process. This enabled process parameter optimization. Numerical predictions were validated against experimental casting results.

Following the initial development of the zinc-lead blast furnace, efforts have been directed both at increasing the scope of the process and increasing the cash return. The paper reviews the process developments which enable the process to smelt efficiently a range of material which encompasses high-grade zinc sulphide concentrates. mixed concentrates, Waelz oxide, zinc ashes and other materials blended to give a furnace feed ranging from 25 to 65% zinc and from 1 to 25% lead, with a copper-lead ratio exceeding 1 to 8. The paper also reviews the process developments which have enabled the capacity of a furnace and condenser system of standard size to be boosted from 30,000 to 80,000 tonnes/annum. The benefits achieved are used as a justification for continuation of the development of the zinc-lead blast furnace. Predictions are made of the benefits expected from further developments.

Poland is rich in hard and brown coal reserves, which have become the most important, and steadily developing, primary source of energy. With 192.6 mill. t of hard coal production and 40 mill. t of exports in 1978, Poland is fourth and second in the world respectively. The paper discusses the various mining methods adopted in the country's history of mining. Particular emphasis is placed on longwails, their mechanization and equipment assembled in the form of fully mechanized face complexes suited for varied geological conditions. Measures to improve the recovery ratio of coal resources are dealt with. investment efforts undertaken in the coal industry are outlined. An account is given of the ever improving techno-economic results of coal mining. The country also exports a wide range of mining equipment and transfers its well-founded technical know-how to others. There are strong cooperative links with many foreign partners.

"Abstract - The mainland Aysén region of Chilean Patagonia (44°15' - 47°30'S) is a representative segment of the South American active continental margin, distinct with respect to northern and central Chile. Mineralization consists mainly of polymetallic deposits, with important Zn-Pb mines and more recently discovered Au-Ag deposits, unlike the central Andes, which are dominated by Cu mineralization. On a regional scale, rocks may be grouped in four main map units: 1) the Paleozoic metamorphic basement; 2) upper Jurassic-Cretaceous calc-alkaline volcanic and marine sedimentary rocks; 3) the Patagonian batholith, and 4) upper Cretaceous to Miocene basalts and marine and continental sedimentary rocks. The upper Jurassic-Cretaceous rocks and the Patagonian batholith formed in a volcanic arc and back-arc setting superimposed on the Paleozoic metamorphic basement.Based on geographic location and geologic and tectonic setting, ore deposits in this region are assigned to three groups, from south to north: El Faldeo, Fachinal, and El Toqui. The El Faldeo group (south of 47°05'S) includes upper Jurassic Zn-Pb skarn and associated polymetallic massive sulfide vein deposits locally overprinted by Au-rich epithermal mineralization, hosted by volcanic and sedimentary rocks and/or by rocks of the metamorphic basement. The Fachinal group (46°05' - 47°05'S) consists of volcanic-hosted lower Cretaceous Au-Ag epithermal deposits, except for the Mina Silva and Manto Rosillo deposits, which are metamorphic basement-hosted Zn-Pb skarns. The El Toqui group (44°30' - 46°05'S) comprises lower Cretaceous Au-rich Zn-Pb skarns and associated polymetallic veins, as well as Au-Ag-rich epithermal deposits, hosted by volcanic, intrusive, and marine sedimentary rocks. Galena lead isotopic signatures for each deposit group indicate a decreasingly radiogenic trend from south to north, suggesting different lead sources or differences among underlying crust. Three metallogenic provinces and two metallogenic epochs are proposed for the Aysén region: the El Faldeo metallogenic province of Late Jurassic age; and the Fachinal and El Toqui provinces of Early Cretaceous age. Résumé - La partie continentale de la région d’Aysen (Patagonie chilienne, 44°15' - 47°30'S), est unsegment représentatif de la marge continentale active d’Amérique du sud, différent des segments du nordet du centre du Chili. La minéralisation, qui consiste essentiellement en des dépôts polymétalliques, avec d’importantes mines de Pb-Zn, et des dépôts d’Au-Ag récemment découverts, différe de celle des Andes centrales où domine la minéralisation cuprifère. "PT International Nickel Indonesia, a subsidiary of Inco Limited, mines and processes nickel laterite ores for the supply of nickel matte, primarily to the Japanese market. It has large ore reserves and a substantial portion of its energy requirement is supplied from its own hydro-electric plant. Since the early 1980s, the company has increased its production level and has dramatically reduced its unit costs. Projects are in progress to further decrease costs and recently a major expansion - 31% increase in nominal capacity - has been undertaken, consistent with marketing opportunity in Japan. The expansion project, which has a low capital cost per unit of production, is outlined in this paper.IntroductionPT Inco is a fully integrated mining and smelting facility located in Indonesia on the island of Sulawesi, and is based on a very large, world class nickel laterite orebody located 60 km inland from the Gulf of Bone. Construction of a single furnace line plant started in 1973. Complete supporting infrastructure of townsite, hospital, schools, shopping centres, road systems, and an airport, all had to be built. Prior to completing the first phase, the decision to expand the plant to a three kiln-furnace line was made. A major factor in the decision was the ability to develop the hydroelectric potential of the nearby Larona River. This involved construction of a 30 m high dam, and a 7 km surface canal to the generating station. The penstocks drop 150m to three 55 Mw turbines. The power generated is sufficient to supply the entire electrical load for the complete smelting complex and town site. The unique capability to supply the high smelting energy requirements for a lateritic nickel ore by fully captive hydro power, has, over the past decade insulated PT Inco from the large upward swings in oil prices suffered by other lateritic nickel producers.Wet ore is first partially dried to 20% moisture in two co-currently fired rotary driers, screened on an internal trommel, and delivered to two dry ore storage buildings. The partially dried ore is calcined at 750°C and partially reduced in three large 100 m by 5.5 m kilns. Reduction is accomplished by lancing bunker C oil onto the ore bed at the discharge end of the kiln. The kilns are equipped with five air pipes with onboard blowers to gradually bum the combustible gases generated by the lance oil. The kilns were also originally equipped with two side burners to supply additional heat close to the feed end of the kiln. Calcined ore is transferred by 20 ton refractory lined containers to the furnace feed bins at the top of the smelter. Smelting is carried out in three 18 m diameter furnaces powered by 45 Mw transformers. Slag is skimmed at 1550°C through water cooled breast plates and removed to the slag dump by Haulmaster Carriers. Matte of 25% Ni, 1O% S, 65% Fe is tapped at 1350°C into the converter aisle. The iron is slagged in converters to produce a nickel sulphide matte at 80% Ni. Three rotary Kaldo converters were initially installed. The product matte is granulated, dried, and shipped in returnable rubber bags to Japan. Most of the matte is fluid-bed roasted to nickel oxide and then directly reduced in a second reducing fluid bed reactor at our facilities in Japan.The smelting complex was designed to smelt two million tonnes of dry ore per year, equivalent to 34 000 tonne nickel production at an ore grade of 2% Ni. The cost of the entire project including working capital was $900 million."

"The microstructures of AlSi10Mg foundry alloy in permanent mould (PM) and high pressure vacuum die (HPVD) castings were analyzed and compared. The as-cast microstructures of two castings mainly consisted of eutectic silicon particles, primary Mg2Si and Fe-rich intermetallic phases. The surface layer in HPVD castings, which has a unique feature and different structures, was carefully characterized. The dimension variation of microstructural phases along the cross section in PM samples is less than that in HPVD samples, although the size of microstructural phases in PM samples was much larger than that in HPVD samples. The mechanical properties of PM and HPVD samples were evaluated on as-cast and T6-treated conditions. The tensile properties of HPVD castings are remarkable better than those of PM castings on the as-cast condition. The T6 heat treatment greatly improves the tensile strength of PM castings while it has limited impact on the tensile strength of HPVD castings.INTRODUCTION The AlSi10Mg alloys are widely applied to the high pressure die casting (HPD) and high pressure vacuum die casting (HPVD). In the HPD process, the melt is injected into the die cavity under a high speed (30–50 m/s in the gate velocity for aluminum alloys), and solidified under a high pressure (up to 200 MPa in the cavity) and with a high cooling rate (up to ~103 Ks–1) (Gourlay, Laukli & Dahle, 2007; Ji, Wang, Watson & Fan, 2013). This results in a unique microstructure feature that is different to other casting processes under gravity. One major concern in HPD castings is porosity due to trapped air in the cavity (Ji et al., 2013), which seriously restricts the application of a heat treatment on the improvement of mechanical prosperities because of the formation of blisters on casting surfaces. For the process improvement, the high pressure vacuum die casting was developed in 1980s (Uchida, 2009). In this process, the melt is injected into the die cavity under reduced pressure (vacuum), which greatly reduces gas porosity in castings due to effectively avoiding the trapped air. Consequently, HPVD castings are heat-treatable without the formation of blisters on castings surface during heat treatment. The HPVD process has been widely applied to produce high quality structural castings in recent years attributed to reliable vacuum system development (Uchida, 2009). However, the microstructure features of HPVD castings are not systemically characterized yet."

"Gold occurs in Nova Scotia in three ways, saddle reefs, fissure veins, and fossil placers. Of these the saddle reefs are the commonest. They have been the source of most of the gold and have also been the subject of most of the literature on the gold occurrences.The Meguma or Gold-bearing series of Nova Scotia is a conformable succession of quartzite's and slates, possibly Precambrian in age, which have been folded into a number of anticlines and synclines that strike (Fig. 1) roughly east and west. This folding has been termed Acadian and is probably a westward continuation of the Caledonian revolution in Britain. It may have started in the Ordovician and continued through the Silurian and into the Lower Devonian. It was followed by the intrusion of the great Devonian granite batholiths. It is thought that the mineralization is connected with the late phases of the cooling of the granite. As the name saddle reef implies, the veins form on the crests and flanks of the anticlines, possibly in the synclinal troughs as well. The beds favoured by the solutions are the slates. The reason for this is apparent when it is realized that in order to fold over 30,000 feet of sediments (the thickness of the Meguma according to E. R. Faribault) through p radians of arc it is necessary to have a differential movement between the top and bottom beds of p times the thickness of the sediments. In the case of the Gold-bearing series, in which strong quartzite beds lie between incompetent slate beds, most of this differential movement was taken up in the slates. The evidence for this is the remarkably fine drag folding and the intense shearing and comminution of some of the beds of slate (Fig. 1). The quartzites exhibit some shearing and faulting, but there is little doubt that the greater permeability lay along the incompetent slate beds. The mineralizing solutions followed these beds and also passed from one slate bed to another through a joint or fault in the intervening bed of quartzite. These joining veins are called angulars in Nova Scotia. Within the veins the gold is in shoots and the real problem is to find out what controls the position and extent of the shoots."

"The property of Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, is in the Gaspe Peninsula some 60 miles west of the town of Gaspe and 20 miles in from the north coast. The Copper Mountain deposit was first discovered in 1921 and first optioned and drilled by Noranda in 1938. The Upper Needle Mountain showings a mile south were found in 1938, but it was not until after a delay of 10 years that the more important deep ore at Needle Mountain was located by drilling. Production started in 1955, and the smelter commenced operation in December. Mining is by open stope methods with first production coming from the Lower Needle Mountain orebody, of which only a small portion has been exposed in underground openings.Stratigraphy and AlterationThe country rock is composed of limy siltstones of Devonian age. Away from alteration these are dark and generally carbonaceous. Throughout the drilled area numerous narrow layers of tuffaceous fragmental material occur, and such beds are found to provide excellent horizon markers by virtue of their uniform thickness and wide lateral distribution. These markers are valuable for stope control in mining the bedded replacement deposits.Intruding the sediments at Copper Mountain are porphyry dykes, and one drill hole encountered granite 1,400 feet below the valley. Solutions responsible for the rock alteration and ore deposits seem to have emanated from this intrusive centre.On the mine claims strong hydrothermal alteration has completely obscured the original character of the sediments. The unaltered formations are all very similar in appearance, but following alteration rocks that are very dissimilar in physical characteristics are produced, and such differences have an important influence on ore deposition. The alteration effects are known to extend over a vertical range in excess of 3,000 feet and have a surface area of two square miles. All known ore bodies are within the zone of alteration. In this, rocks are strikingly bleached to a white colour in contrast to the normal dark-coloured sediments, and are much harder and more abrasive, with bedding often obscured. The first effect of alteration is driving off of carbonaceous matter, followed progressively by silicification in the acid rocks and by the formation of lime silicates in the lime rocks, with an accompanying gain in silica and a corresponding loss in lime. Extensive analysis has shown that there is an actual addition of silica involved in the alteration."

Mining activities can produce large volumes of waste rock, which are typically deposited in piles on the soil surface, above the water table. Such piles can cover areas of several tens of hectares and can reach over a hundred meters in height. For hard rock mines, the waste rock grain size can vary from silty particles to metre-scale blocks. The internal structure of a pile constructed on a relatively flat surface typically includes two main zones. The first zone corresponds to the heart of the pile, and is formed by several sub-horizontal stratifications (with dense and loose layers) due to the heavy mine equipment traffic which induces local compaction and degradation of the waste rock. The second zone corresponds to regions where waste rocks are deposited by push-dumping or end-dumping close to the external flank of the pile, inducing grain size segregation along the slope. Depending on the deposition sequence, grain size distribution and bench height, a gradation may then be observed, with coarser particles (with cobbles and blocks) near the base and finer particles near the crest, together with inclined stratifications due to the advance of the deposition face. These internal features affect the distribution and flow of water (and air) in the pile. To assess the internal distribution of material properties within the pile, a combination of several tools is usually required which can provide information on the hydrogeological and geochemical characteristics of the waste rock. In this regard, geophysical tools are very interesting because they can lead to a threedimensional mapping of property variations. The information gathered from a combination of appropriately selected techniques can be used to construct numerical models to further study unsaturated water flow and reactive transport. Such simulations help better understand the pile response in its actual and future states, which in turn provides input to adjust the deposition sequence, to plan for closure, and to select an in situ groundwater monitoring strategy. The presentation will give an overview of techniques that have been developed to characterise material properties in the laboratory and in the field, and to obtain a general picture of a pile?s internal structure. Additional results on unsaturated reactive transport modelling will also be shown to illustrate how the internal pile structure may influence its hydro-geochemical and environmental response.

"In 1994 McGill and INCO (Sudbury operation) initiated transfer of technology originally developed to detect level in flotation columns to thickeners. A conductivity probe was installed in a concentrate thickener to monitor the mud-line and solids load. The probe consisted in a vertical tube with 32 equally-spaced electrode rings connected in pairs to give 31 conductivity cells. Conductivity was measured as a function of depth (so-called conductivity profile) from which the mud line and % solids could be inferred. The probe was installed in October 1994 and has been successfully detecting profiles since then. This communication includes a description of incidents and experiences during this technology transfer process including: probe installation and start-up; software modifications to accommodate operating conditions and operators' needs; calibration procedures to adjust to changes in performance as a consequence of long term use; and preliminary observations on the last stage, still in progress, signal interpretation and use to facilitate operation, particularly by providing early reaction to upstream disturbances.IntroductionThickening is one of the basic unit operations in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy used to separate suspended solid particles from a solid-liquid dispersion by gravity settling. As the dispersion enters the thickener, the solids settle and clarified water overflows the top. A thickener, which may be continuous or batch, is basically a large vertical cylindrical tank provided with devices to feed the dispersion and to remove the settled solids. The tank provides residence time for the particles to settle. The dispersion enters the thickener through the feedwell whose function is to dissipate the momentum of the feed stream and to create relatively quiescent conditions around the entering point. Rotating rake arms move the settled solids towards the discharge point located at the bottom centre of the tank.There are normally three distinct zones in a thickener: a top layer of clear water, a middle layer called a sedimenting zone in which particles are settling, and a bottom layer called a compression zone in which particles are pressed together as a consequence of the weight of accumulated particles. Proper operation of a thickener requires two simultaneous conditions: no solids in the water overflowing the top and the target solids content in the underflow pulp. To achieve these conditions is difficult because sensors for detecting the sediment line (interface between clear water and sedimenting zone) and the solids content in the compression zone are not commercially available."

The current paper is focused on evaluating the behavior of copper in a copper production slag and the assessment of metal recovery possibilities. For this reason, thermodynamic calculations were carried out to determine the influence of parameters such as slag composition, temperature and oxygen partial pressure on recovery of non-ferrous elements. It was found that the formation of a solid face centered cubic (fcc) phase, mainly consisting of iron, limits the extent of reduction that can be achieved for an industrial process. However, it could be discovered that solubility of iron in the Cu-rich liquid alloy strongly depends on presence of other elements, particularly arsenic. As part of the results of this study, the solubility of Cu in the slag at onset of fcc phase formation is presented as function of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and concentration of MgO and CaO. It was concluded that lower temperature (1200°C) and higher CaO addition (16 mass-% in this study), would result in the highest achievable copper recovery from slag. INTRODUCTION Copper slag is produced as a by-product of the copper production process. The slag is still containing a high amount of copper and other valuable metals. This demands further treatment of the slag as a secondary source of metals. In addition, the physical/mechanical properties of slag allow its use in several applications such as hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, as an abrasive and many more. These applications help reducing the use of natural resources like rock and sand. By decreasing the content of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn and As in the slag, its application in abovementioned fields becomes more attractive as the probability of releasing these elements to the environment is further reduced. To develop a pyrometallurgical slag reduction process, it is necessary to understand what describes the end point of the reduction. This point is expected at maximum copper recovery without facing operational challenges. Existing literature provide some information on the effect of different parameters such as temperature or concentration of different slag formers, on solubility of copper and heavy metals in different phases. However, due to complexity of industrial slags, equilibrium experiments and accurate thermodynamic modelling are essential to be able to reliably predict the behavior of different elements in the system and determine the end-point of reduction.

A thermodynamic and kinetic model is proposed to explain the formation of bornite, chalcopyrite and magnetite during partial roasting of enargite-containing copper concentrates. The proposed mechanism involves solid-solid-gas and solid-gas reactions between chalcocite, pyrrhotite, gaseous sulfur and oxygen. The formation of bornite could be explained by a two-step reaction: the first one involving the formation of chalcopyrite by a reaction between Cu2S, FeS and gaseous sulfur, followed by a second step in which the newly formed chalcopyrite reacts with additional chalcocite to form bornite. Although thermodynamically the direct formation of bornite is more favorable than that of chalcopyrite, the lower diffusion kinetics of bornite formation could explain the preferential formation of chalcopyrite. If the reaction occurs with stoichiometric chalcocite and pyrrhotite in the presence of gaseous sulfur to form chalcopyrite, no bornite is formed, while for the stoichiometric reaction between chalcopyrite and chalcocite in the absence of sulfur, only bornite is formed. For the formation of magnetite and chalcopyrite the mechanism could involve the partial reaction of chalcocite and pyrrhotite in the presence of oxygen. The proposed model is thermodynamically consistent with the experimental results obtained in laboratory and pilot plant. INTRODUCTION The processing of high-arsenic copper concentrates with over 0.7 wt.-% arsenic by conventional smelting-converting normally require an additional arsenic removal step to reduce arsenic content to levels below 0.2–0.3%. One of these high-arsenic copper concentrates is the one produced by the Ministro Hales Division (DMH) of CODELCO, which has the typical chemical composition shown in Table 1. Enargite (Cu3AsS4), chalcocite (Cu2S) and pyrite (FeS2) are the main mineralogical species present in these concentrates, with over 75 wt.-%, as shown in Table 2. Partial or “neutral” roasting of these concentrates under controlled temperature and partial oxygen pressure conditions at 923–993K (650–720ºC) can remove up to 95% of the arsenic as As2S3 (As4S6), which has a high vapor pressure under these conditions, leaving a calcine with low residual arsenic. In copper concentrates, arsenic is present generally as enargite and arsenopyrite. This compounds as well as others such as pyrite and covelite, decompose readily above 770 K (500ºC), releasing, in addition to gaseous arsenic trisulfide, gaseous sulfur which by oxidizing to SO2 generates most of the heat required by the process.

"An LHD teleoperation and guidance system, developed at the Ontario Division of Inco Limited, has been demonstrated in operation at Copper Cliff North Mine (CCNM) since late September, 1993. The tests performed to date have evaluated the feasibility and production viability of multiple LHD operation, from surface by one operator.The systems technology required to accomplish this consists of an electronic monitoring and control package mounted on the LHD; a high bandwidth mining computer network capable of providing radio frequency coverage; and an operator control console which provides an operator workstation for multiple LHD operation.This paper discusses the systems required to accomplish the task of LHD teleoperation and guidance, the benefits of multiple machine operation and future research and development directions. IntroductionSince underground mining began, persolU1el have entered the mine workings to mine ore. Today, however, the rapid advancement of modem telecommunications, computer hardware and software technology has opened the door to remote mining technology that was considered unfeasible a few years ago. This paper discusses the ingredients of remote mining technology that have been developed at Inco Limited.Figure I represents an historical view of the application of electronics to LHD operation at Inco Limited. In 1980, the first radio remote controls for the operation of LI-IDs in large open stopes were tested. The successful application of this technology at Inco went hand-in-hand with the development and application of the Vertical Crater Retreat mining method. The combination of these two advances had a very positive effect on the productivity in the mid-eighties at Inco. In 1991, the Mines Research Department of the Ontario Division advanced remote control technology by developing a high capacity underground mining telecommunications system. This system is capable of moving voice, data and video information throughout the mine workings. The system is based on broadband communication technology found in most automated factories, with the added benefit of providing the information to and from mobile equipment through radio interfaces. The first test of the system consisted of an operator teleoperating a single LHD (on the 3000 ft level) from the surface. The next test on September 13, 1993, demonstrated the first production application of multiple LHDs being run from surface with a single operator."
