The case of the P. G. E. railway is a peculiar one. Traversing, as it does, to a large extent, a mineralized country there are as yet no producing mines along its route although I am convinced that mines will be developed in the region tributary to the railway. The Fitzimmons group of claims, a copper property near Mons station, 37 miles from Squamish is now (unless recently relinquished) under bond to the Granby Company. On Cadwallader creek, in the upper Bridge river country, certain gold properties, referred to later, are being developed. Prospectors are fairly active in the Pemberton meadows area. There are also a large number in the Bridge river, Gun creek, and Whitewater districts. East of Marguerite station some development work is being prosecuted on some copper claims located there. In addition here and there throughout the entire route of the railway prospecting is being undertaken. At Hat creek, 15 miles from Pavilion station there is an enormous deposit of lignite. It is by no means certain that this coal can be profitably mined and hauled to the railway, but as a cheap fuel it offers possibilities in the recovery of by-products by destructive distillation. Logical procedure would ? indicate the expenditure of considerable money on development and, if results justify, the construction of a spur from the main line to the deposit.

"IntroductionMinerals may be classed broadly as ferromagnetic (magnetite for example), as paramagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field convergence) and as diamagnetic (attracts to regions of magnetic field divergence). High-intensity separators are not necessary to separate ferromagnetic minerals from other classes. Rather, low-intensity units that generate fields below 5000 gauss are adequate for this purpose. However, paramagnetic minerals, such as ilmenite, with high magnetic ""attractability"" require fields of up to 10 000 gauss; those with low attractability may require even higher fields. Table 1 shows approximate ranges of field intensities necessary to separate ferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals from minerals of lower attractability, along with the force with which they are attracted relative to iron in a standardized magnetic field.Uniform magnetic fields, not useful for separators, are generated between flat parallel surfaces; non-uniform fields, useful for separators, arise when at least one of the surfaces is of irregular shape. The diagrams below show how magnetic lines of force align relative to north and south poles.If a particle is placed in a uniform field, it feels no displacing force unless the particle distorts the applied field assymmetrically. This is not the case in non-uniform fields which are required for magnetic separators.Magnetic fields can be generated by permanent magnets (low intensity), by electromagnets (medium and high intensity) and even by superconducting coils (100 000 gauss fields and higher), although the latter are not as yet useful in production environments .The magnetic force of attraction per unit of mass, that acts on a paramagnetic mineral such as hematite, increases in proportion to the strength of the field . Unfortunately, the highest fields attainable with electromagnets is of the order of 20 000 gauss. Fortunately, the gradient of the fie ld (that is, the degree of convergence of magnetic lines of force) is important, because the attractive force per unit mass is proportional to it also . The Arvida Smelter marked its 80th anniversary in 2006. Arvida currently operates 6 potrooms equipped with prebaked side-feeding pots producing 160 000t of aluminum per year, requiring the supply of 300 000t of alumina per year. In the past, to ensure reliable alumina supplies to the pots, especially in winter, a safety stock of alumina was kept inside the plant. The improved reliability of shipping on the Saguenay River has cut the need for such a stock. However, the stoppage of 8 Soderbergtechnology potrooms, starting in the 1980s up to 2003, generated alumina from the cleaning of pot pits, totaling 18000t and leading to the building-up of a significant alumina stock again. Concerns over working conditions, effect on potroom operations, and dust emissions prevented Arvida from tackling effectively this impressive alumina stock. Yet the increasing cost of alumina has created a strong motivation to use the stored alumina. In 2004 Arvida launched a project to recycle the stored alumina. This 4-year project aimed at clearing the alumina stock without affecting the operation of the smelter. It involved changing work organization, improving equipment and controlling the effect of the recycled alumina on the smelting process and working conditions.

Fifty per cent. increased lump coal production and at the same time a reduction of from 20 to 40 per cent. in explosive consumption. These results were achieved by the use of the rock-dust cartridge method of stemming shots in the Ruhr coal mines, as announced by Dr. Alfred Stettbacher in the September 1923 number of the Explosive Engineer. Immediately, the explosive and the coal-mining industries on this continent became intensely interested. Considerable experimental work has been carried on in a number of American and Canadian mines during the past year, by which our engineers have become assured that the use of rock-dust cart-ridges for stemming shots increases the efficiency of explosives and promotes safety in coal mines.

The northern part of the P. G. E. railway traverses and opens up that part of the province known as the Cariboo district, comprising the Cariboo and Quesnel Mining Divisions, which are a part of the Northeastern Mineral Survey District. Williams lake, a divisional point on the P. G. E. is near the southern boundary of the Quesnel Division and from this point the railway runs northerly to Quesnel, its present terminus. From Quesnel the railway is projected and partially constructed to Prince George on the Canadian National railway; therefore its general trend is northerly through the heart of the Cariboo district. Early History There is no need to outline at any length the early history of mining in the Cariboo. It is sufficient to say that the great gold rush to the Cariboo, in the early sixties, was practically the commencement of mining in British Columbia. These early placer mining operations centred around the old towns of Quesnel Forks, Keithley Creek, Barkerville and Van Winkle, the latter now called Stanley. Many millions of dollars of placer gold have been taken out and the end of production is not in sight yet. The maximum yearly production was reached about 1863, after which there was a gradual decline in output. During the war years production was at a very low figure but a steady, even if small, increase has occurred in the last three years and prospects are encouraging for a much greater output.

INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits of Salmo map-area (Figure 1) have aroused the interest of prospectors for more than a half-century. Properties within the map-area have produced lead, zinc, silver, tungsten, and gold. Sheep Creek mining camp ranks fifth in the Province in the total production of gold, but during recent years interest has been concentrated upon base metals, and meticulous prospecting and exploration have resulted in the discovery of many large zinc-lead orebodies. PREVIOUS WORK Geological investigations of the region were begun long ago, and it is interesting to trace the development of ideas with our increasing knowledge of the geology of this complex area. The first geological examination of the rocks of Salmo map-area was made in 1859-60 by H. Bauerman (1), who was employed as geologist accompanying the first international Boundary Survey. Bauerman examined the rocks exposed along Pend d'Oreille river and published a section indicating that the sedimentary rocks are probably of Palaeozoic age, and are intruded by granite of unknown age. McConnell and Brock(2), in 1894 - 1900, carried out the reconnaissance mapping of the West Kootenay Sheet, on which they outlined the Mesozoic rocks of the Rossland Beaver Mountain volcanic groups that they believed rested unconformably upon the sedimentary rocks to the southeast, which they regarded as of Palaeozoic age.

Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb-xW (where x = 0, 0.5, and 1 at. %) powders were consolidated by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The consolidated samples were solution heat treated above the a-transus followed by stepped cooling to room temperature. Selected samples were subsequently aged at 950 °C for up to 72 hours. The post-heat treatment microstructure was examined by optical and electron microscopy. It was found that increasing holding time above the a-transus generated a more homogenous microstructure. Utilizing the stepped cooling sequence, especially with a transition temperature of 1270 °C, massively transformed gamma (Ym) was diminished. Aging caused coarsening of the fully lamellar microstructure in the 0%W and 0.5%W samples while almost no coarsening occurred in the 1 % W sample. Precipitates began to form during aging in samples containing W. The precipitates at the lamellar interfaces are fine and have a needle like shape, while precipitates at the lamellar grain boundaries are coarse and circular in shape. The size and number of the precipitates depend on aging time and the level ofW content.

"THE OPPORTUNITY to participate in a CIM seminarconcerning the direction of mining engineer trainingis perhaps fortuitous as it comes at a time when theengineering schools which have invited inspection byCanadian Accreditation Board of the Canadian Councilof Professional Engineers are examining theirrespective curricula.Currently there exists considerable soul-searching in various engineering schools across Canada where questions such as the following are being posed.- Have we achieved the correct balance between subjects related to technical methodology and subjects devoted to conceptual planning and design?- Should we include ""applied humanities"" in our program? (Whatever ""applied humanities"" might mean!)- Should courses covering pollution control, ecology, economics, technical writing, professional conduct and ethics be offered as compulsory subjects, as electives, or not at all?- Is it a better scheme to have students complete an Arts or Science degree before entering engineering?- Do we place too much emphasis on pure mathematics and sciences with the result that insufficient time is available for instruction in the engineering applications of these subjects?- Should English expression and/ or literature be included in the engineering programs and, if so, should these subjects be presented by the English department or by English lecturers captive to the engineering school? - Is the present program directed primarily at research activities rather than preparing engineers for their future roles in industry? - Should we teach our own versions of mathematics and physics? - Do we have sufficient engineers on the faculty strength or are we overloaded with Ph.D.'s from the pure sciences? - How flexible should the program be, what should the compulsory vs elective course content be, and what freedom of choice, if any, should be given with respect to elective courses? - To what extent should students contribute to faculty decisions?- How far should we pursue computer science subjects and do we need to make our students proficient in computer programming? - How far should operations research and mathematical models be carried in the undergraduate program when the students have limited experience in the real engineering world? - Realizing that an engineer never completes his education, should the undergraduate program cover ""bare bones"" engineering and should instruction in particular disciplines be left to graduate schools and / or industry?"

"Pure aluminum (Al) matrix composites with changing the volume fraction of TiB2 particle content from 10 to 30% was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Then the microstructure, density, dispersibility and thermal conductivity of the composites was estimated. As increasing TiB2 content, the dispersibility of particles and the density of the composites degraded slightly. And, the effect of the dispersibility of TiB2 particles on the thermal conductivity was quite little. The thermal conductivity of the composites was less than the theoretical value calculated by Maxwell-Eucken equation considering the effect of the density. It is due the influence of the interface heat transfer rate, because these composites have many small sized particles and have high interface density.INTRODUCTION Recently, metal matrix composites (MMCs) have been used widely in electric / electronic components, architectural materials, transportation equipment, aerospace and a precision instruments, because it’s superior properties have been greatly watched. Demand of MMC for industrial use has been increasing gradually. Furthermore, multifunction properties are required for the composites strongly. By integrating the dissimilar materials, the composites have various properties that we cannot get from monolithic materials. On the other hand, the response to the thermal management is required for materials, recently, and the need for the structural material controlling the thermal conductivity has been increasing. Especially, superior thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties from room temperature to high temperature are required for heat sink and heat exchanger at the same time. In late years, a study on the composites combining carbon materials and aluminum and copper has been developing, and actually the composites with high thermal conductivity which is not provided in the conventional materials is developed. On the other hand, non-oxide ceramics particles such as SiC and AlN, TiB2 have good thermal conductivity. Particularly, as TiB2 has good electrical conductivity, TiB2 containing MMCs is expected as innovative materials used as electric/ electronic components. Furthermore, as TiB2 has low density, high melting point, low thermal expansion and good deformation resistance, the development of high performance composites with multi-functional properties is expected. As thermal conductivity of pure Al and TiB2 are 225 and 66.4 W/mK, respectively, it is expected that the degradation of thermal conductivity by adding dispersant in Al matrix is suppressed. The authors have carried out a thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, mechanical properties of 20 vol.% TiB2 dispersed Al composites (Sugio, 2016, Sasaki, 2016). In this study, the influence of quantity of addition of TiB2 on microstructure, thermal conductivity was studied minutely."

A fast-flow reactor mass spectrometer has been utilized to investigate the reactions of gas-phase gold cluster anions with CO and oxygen. Addition of CO to Aun - produces species of the form Au(CO)m -, where m = 2-5. However, CO does not bind to Au2 - or Au3 -. With oxygen addition in the cluster source, gold oxide species with both molecular and atomized oxygen are produced. The addition of carbon monoxide to these preoxidized gold cluster anions reveals that select species with 1, 2, and 3 gold atoms participate in the oxidation reaction to produce CO2. Bimolecular rate constants for the reactions between these species and CO are also discussed.

Copper powder generated during the treatment of electro-metallurgical bleeds by reactive electro- dialysis (RED) had totally reduced the content of ferric ions in acidic synthetic electrolytes (Cu (II)- Fe (III) – H2SO4). In batch and columnar experiments 100% of the ferric ions were reduced to ferrous ions with an extremely high kinetics. A preliminary conceptual design for reducing ferric ions based on an integrate RED- Column for treatment of electro-winning bleed system is discussed. This system is able to recover simultaneously sulfuric acid and copper powder, which will reduce ferric ions. INTRODUCTION It is well known the negative effect of ferric ions in the copper electro-winning process. The increase of ferric content in the electrolyte reduces the current efficiency, i.e., there is an increase in the energy consumption, and changes the surface morphology of the copper deposit (Das, Gopala & Krishna, 1996; Vargas & Parra, 2013). The increase of the specific energy consumption due to the loss of current efficiency occurs by the reduction reaction of ferric to ferrous ions in the cathode, at the anode the ferrous ions are slowly oxidized to ferric ions (Shaw, Dreisinger, Lancaster, Richmond & Tomlinson, 2004). To control the level of iron in the electrolyte, bleeds are needed; this bleed electrolyte containing copper, sulfuric acid, cobalt, iron and other impurities normally is waster, which increased the production cost of the plant (Milbourne, 2002; Mckevitt & Dreisinger, 2009). Then, permanent efforts oriented to treat those bleeds to avoid losses of valuables components are made; among them are use ion exchange resins (Shaw et al., 2004; Mackevitt et al., 2009), chemical precipitation (Izadi, Mohebbi, Amiri & Izadi, 2017) and electrodialysis (Cortés, Ipinza & Ibáñez, 2013). The last one allows to the simultaneous recovery of sulfuric acid and copper powder. If one of the valuables obtained by treating the bleed can be used to reduce ferric ion concentration in the electrolyte could be an important asset. This issue at laboratory scale is reported in this work, the use of copper powder, generated by reactive electro-dialysis when treating synthetic acidic electro-metallurgical bleeds, for reducing ferric ions in acidic electrolytes.

The commercial carbonate industry of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, began about eighty years ago with the opening of the Sydney steel plant. Significant carbonate deposits are confined to the Precambrian George River Grav" and the Mississippian Windsor Group. George River Group carbonates are thought to have formed as part of a stable platformal sequence. They are crystalline and lie within a dominantly quartzitic sequence. Of the four major sites for George River carbonates on the island, the most commercially promising are the dolomite at Kelly Cove and the limestone and dolomite at Glencoe. Kelly Cove dolomite has good potential for metallurgical, agricultural and fettling purposes; reserves approach 13.6 million tonnes. Windsor Group carbonates were deposited as marine sediments in basins formed by pre-Carboniferous fault blocks. Windsor dolomite reserves at Stoney Creek are only fractionally retrievable and hence are of little economic value. The Windsor Group's Irish Cove limestone has been quarried on a large scale since 1964; no undeveloped commercial deposits, however, remain in the group.

"Zinc metal is primarily produced by electrowinning from sulfate solution. Zinc electrowinning is very sensitive to impurities such as Co and Ni. These impurities have to be removed to produce high-quality zinc and maintain a high zinc current efficiency. Zinc dusts are used to remove these impurities by cementation. However cobalt cementation is extremely slow and it is typically activated by the addition of Cu and Sb. Even with the use of Cu-Sb activation, cobalt is still difficult to remove. The zinc dust used for cobalt cementation is negligible compared to that consumed for hydrogen evolution. In some plants up to 6-7% of electrolytic zinc is used for cementation. This is a great waste of energy. Cu-Sb activation is not well understood. The objective of this study was to further understand the Cu-Sb activation and then find a way to reduce hydrogen evolution and promote cobalt cementation. The investigation reveals how hydrogen evolution (or zinc dissolution) and cobalt cementation and re-dissolution change with temperature, zinc dust dosage, the concentrations of copper and antimony and time. In the Cu-Sb activation, copper is deposited on a zinc particle to produce a porous shell. The zinc particle as an anode dissolves while the shell as a cathode provides a place where cobalt cementation and hydrogen evolution occur and they are catalyzed by antimony. A certain level of antimony (around 0.1 mg/L) is a key to maintain the catalytic effect of the shell. At a higher antimony concentration, cobalt cementation is accelerated slightly while hydrogen evolution is increased greatly. When a zinc particle dissolves to a certain degree, cobalt loses its cathodic protection and starts to re-dissolve. The change in cobalt concentration is determined by the rates of cobalt cementation and re-dissolution. The operation conditions can be optimized to maximize the cobalt removal and minimize the zinc dust dosage.INTRODUCTIONMost of the world’s zinc metal is produced by electrowinning from sulfate media. Many impurities such as iron, copper, cobalt and nickel are co-extracted into solution with zinc. Iron, mercury, indium, lead and tin are removed by co-precipitation as hydroxides. Copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic and germanium are partially co-precipitated with iron while cadmium, magnesium and chloride remain in solution. Cobalt, copper, cadmium, nickel and etc. are subsequently removed by cementation with zinc dust to achieve an acceptable current efficiency and high purity metal product for the economical production of zinc. The Province-wide road ban on movement of heavy loads has had the effect of curtailing or stopping development in several areas. In the Leduc area, the discovery well has been restricted in flow to only a fraction of normal due to limited storage space, but drilling at Imperial Leduc Nos. 2, 3, and 4 has been continued for the past few weeks. The No. 2 well is within 100 feet of the producing horizon and should be completed within the next few days. According to reports, it has been logging slightly lower, structurally, than the discovery well, but, regardless of the outcome, it has been an important test to determine westerly cross-section of the Leduc structure. No official reports have been made available of any tests made during the drilling of the well, but it is understood that promising oil and gas shows have been indicated in higher formations. Actual drilling operations have not been commenced by any of the other companies holding leases in the immediate area but it is expected that, when road bans are removed and equipment is assured, several wells will be commenced. Announcement has been made that Imperial Oil, Limited, will drill a well near Battle lake, about thirty-five miles southwest of the Leduc field. Location of the well has been made following an extensive seismograph survey of the area, with total depth of the test well expected to be in the 8,000- to 8,500-foot range. Drilling will be done with the heavy-duty rig last used at the De Winton test. Imperial Oil have abandoned hope of oil production in the Provost area after drilling nine wells, but will retain their interest in the gas field that has been developed. Of the wells drilled, four indicated gas flows ranging from 1,060 to 13,200 M.c.f. per day.

In order to realize the efficient and sustainable development of mining and smelting activities and operations, the following issues are indispensable: (1) to investigate the up-to-date pollution control technologies of mine and smelter, (2) to promote those technologies, (3) to develop technologies which are environmentally friendly. This paper discusses the recent technologies for environmental conservation/prevention and their diffusion in the world, and also the key technologies required for the most desirable sustainable development.

"IntroductionThe leaching method selected for the dissolving of uranium ore depends in part on the physical characteristics of the ore, as well as the uranium mineralization. There are two main methods of leaching employed in uranium circuits in North America, one being ""Carbonate Leaching"" on sandstone, and pitchblende type ores, and ""Acid Leaching"", on quartzite type ores.This chapter deals with the acid leaching of uranium ores found in the Elliot Lake area, using sulphuric acid, for the leaching reagent, and ""pachucas"" for the contactor.The basic leaching process involves the pregrinding of the ore and the mixing of the ore with hot sulphuric acid, the mixture is air agitated, the air being used to oxidize the ore as well as produce agitation. A very important factor that has to be determined during initial test work are the amount of acid consumers in the ore. Within the Elliot Lake orebodies are minerals such as chlorite schist, diabase, and basement material, all very high acid consumers, consuming up to 1000 lbs. of acid per ton of ore. THE milling plant of Bicroft Uranium Mines Limited at Ban-croft, Ontario, was one of the first in Canada to employ ion excl1ange for the selecti1•e recovery of uranium from acid leach liquors. The ion ex-change circuit started operating early in November, 1956, and by June 1 I959, had handled more than two million tons of pregnant solution containing I,830,000 pounds of U3Os. Each column had been saturated and eluted about 430 times. The ion exchange columns are the conventional fixed bed type. Uranium is eluted from the resin with a sodium chloride-sulphuric acid solution and is precipitated continuous-ly with magnesia. After filtering and drying, the precipitate, or "yellow cake," is packaged in drums for shipment to the refinery.

DR. G. W. RAMSEY (l): A study of our non-treatment silicosis autopsy material for the years 1940-43 inclusive, in addition to the common findings of fibrosis, nodules, and emphysema, shows marked thickening of the alveolar walls. This change is due to one or more of the following factors: congestion, edema, accumulation of both small and large monocuclear cells within the interstitial tissues and large monocuclear cells attached to the lining membrane of the alveolar sacs. This alteration in the alveolar walls, we believe, is one of the most important factors in producing impaired pulmonary function. Comparison of our first autopsy material of a case receiving twenty aluminium treatments beginning June, 1943, shows a striking change in the alveolar walls. In all areas free of silocotic nodules and fibrous tissue, the alveolar walls approach normal thickness and are free of cellular deposits. No change was noted in the old processes and none was expected. We believe that these changes in the alveolar walls were brought about by the aluminium therapy and that they constitute a major factor in the improved pulmonary ventilation noted in treatment cases.

Anyox, where the Hidden Creek mine of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company is located, is situated on an excellent deep-water harbour in Granby bay, at the head of Observatory inlet, about 600 miles from Vancouver and 90 miles north of Prince Rupert. Anyox is the Indian name for the little stream which empties into Granby bay, and means 'hidden creek'. The Ore-Bodies The ore is a replacement deposit and occurs at and near the contact between argillites and a later intrusive greenstone. This contact locally has a general north-and-south trend, an irregular westerly dip, and in the vicinity of the ore-bodies there has been intense folding, accompanied by faulting. The mineralizing solutions supposedly were derived from the Coast Range granite batholith, distant one to two miles to the east and north. The whole area is cut by many dykes of varying widths, which seem to have had but little part in the ore deposition.

THE disposal of tailing or waste material, which is generally a very large proportion of the ore treated, is a major problem in the location and operation of any concentrating enterprise and especially so where the life of the operation is expected to continue for many years. Many factors need to be taken into consideration in the selection of a tailing site, chief among which are economical handling of the material, subsequent re-treatment of the tailing, and precaution against stream pollution by waste water. The final location of many mill sites bas been governed largely by the selection of a sui table area for tailing storage. The Sullivan concentrator of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company is situated about three miles from the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, B.C., and one of the deciding factors in its location at this distance from the mine was the availability of a suitable area in which tailing could be deposited. In view of the indicated long life of the property, a far-sighted policy bad to be adopted in the matter of tailing storage, for not only would it be necessary to accumulate a huge tonnage of finely ground material, but also reclamation for iron recovery at some future date bad to be considered. Some idea of the extent of the problem may be grasped when it is noted that, by the end of 1938, over 18,000,000 tons of tailing bad been impounded in an area of some 200 acres.
