Gyroscopic surveying instruments, which apply the physical law of a gyroscope, are being used for deter-mining the azimuth of lines with a high degree of ac-curacy. In the past ten years, gyro-theodolites have been introduced widely for underground orientation in the mining industry of Russia, Germany and South Africa. Gyroscorpic methods eliminate awkward procedures of conventional shaft plumbing, and provide more safety, excellent control and the highest precision at any point under-ground without interference with hoisting operations. The advantages of gyroscopic orientation in geodetic surveys become obvious in primary and secondary triangulation, in the determination of co-ordinates of single triangulation points, using the method of trigonometric re-section and intersection, and when traversing over long distances or in areas with obstructed view. Other fields of application are found in geophysical surveys and in the orientation of technical objects; e.g. radar stations, relay stations and ballistic missiles.

Meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid(DMSA) was studied as an additive for thiosulfate leaching of gold. DMSA was added to solutionscomposed of either sodium thiosulfate or calcium thiosulfate and the solutions were tested for their ability to leach pure gold samples as well as a calcined gold ore from Barrick Gold Corp. Results showed prolonged leaching of pure gold samples when DMSA was added at a concentration of 5µM; however, higher concentrations were shown to inhibit leaching. Differential capacitance measurements of the interface indicated that DMSA adsorbed as a defective monolayer on the surface of gold at low concentrations and formed a more compact monolayer with increased concentration. It is proposed that a concentration of 5µM DMSA produces a defectivemonolayer on the surface that still allowsthe transport of oxidants to the underling metal while inhibiting the formation of polysulfide passive layers that arise fromdecomposed thiosulfate.The 5µM DMSA/CaS2O3 system was also studied using calcined ore. Results showed that the initial leaching rates in the presence of DMSA are lower than those obtained in thiosulfate alone. However, after 10h, prolonged leaching is again observed when DMSA is included.

The area covered by the present paper consists of about fifty square miles in the immediate vicinity of the settlement of St. Lawrence, which is on the Southern extremity of the Burin peninsula on the south coast of Newfoundland. Physiography Physiographically, the area is part of the Atlantic upland, equivalent to the New England province of the United States. Evidences of two erosion surfaces are to be seen truncating the intrusives and the folded volcanics and sedimentary rocks. The older erosion surface is represented by small monadnocks from 650 to 750 feet in height with the younger surface covering most of the area and characterized by rounded subdued topography with maximum relief of two to three hundred feet and numerous ponds and bogs. These surfaces have been correlated with the High Valley and the Lawrence peneplains of Newfoundland. On the Avalon peninsula, these peneplains have elevations of, respectively, from 1,300 to 1,700 feet and from 500 to 1,000 feet. Glaciation The entire peninsula has been glaciated, with lee-and-stoss slopes showing on the highest hills in the immediate vicinity, many of which have striae and erratics on their summits. The lee-and-stoss slopes, the glacial striae, and the distribution of certain rocks found in the drift and whose source outcrops are known, indicate a southward direction of ice movement.

In the grain refinement of aluminum, Al3Ti and TiB2 particles are introduced to reduce the casting grain size down to 200 micrometer level, which makes cold working possible. The particles are brought in by the addition of Al-Ti-B type master alloys. It is generally believed that TiB2 particles are stable and nucleate a-Al grains in solidification in the presence of extra titanium than the stoichiometry of TiB2 from the dissolution of Al3Ti particle in the master alloys. Titanium in solution either form Al3Ti layers on the surface of TiB2 particles or as solute to promote the nucleation and to restrict the growth of a-Al grains. However, a consensus on a grain refinement mechanism is still to be reached due to the lack of direct observation. This paper presents finding on the TiB2/Al3Ti interfaces in an aluminum matrix. It demonstrates a strong epitaxial growth of Al3Ti on the surface of TiB2 particles, a sign of the formation of an Al3Ti layer on the surface of TiB2 particles in grain refinement practice. The Al3Ti layer has a crystal coherency with a-Al and hence offers a substrate for heterogeneous nucleation of a-Al grains.

"Peñasquito is a complex polymetallic deposit containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper and is one of the largest producers of gold in Mexico. Mining activity is currently transitioning to a second open pit, Chile Colorado, which will be mined concurrently with the existing open pit, Peñasco. The ore bodies are located within diatreme pipes and into the surrounding sediment formation. In the coming years, mining will be carried out in more sedimentary zones, which are significantly higher in organic carbon content. Organic carbon in the feed influences both flotation and leaching operations. Several changes are being implemented to the Peñasquito flowsheet to mitigate the effects of increased organic carbon in the plant feed. These include the use of alternate reagent schemes, construction of a carbon pre-flotation circuit, implementation of a pre-leach flotation circuit ahead of pyrite leach, and evaluation of a tertiary process for separation of carbon and precious metal minerals.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Peñasquito operation is located in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, approximately 200 km from the city of Zacatecas in the Mazapil municipality (Figure 1). Peñasquito has been in operation since 2009, with mining carried out by open-pit methods. Oxide ore has been processed in a heap leach facility and sulfide ore is treated in the sulfide processing plant. The processing capacity of the sulfide plant is 130,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 production amounted to 465,000 ounces of gold, 17.6 million ounces of silver, 109 million lb of contained lead in lead concentrate, and 263 million lb of contained zinc in zinc concentrate (Goldcorp Inc., 2017). To recover more of the contained gold and silver and to mitigate the impact of increasing organic carbon content in the ore, a number of significant changes are being made to the operation."

"ALTHOUGH I SHOULD FIRST REVIEW the state of the mining art as it is today, because of the shortness of time I will confine myself to a re-view of the more important advances in that art which have been made in the past two to three decades. Then, a look at the opportunities and the challenges which now present themselves will be more meaningfulFirst, some of the more impor-tant developments in underground mining:(1) The recognition that good ventilation, visibility and working conditions are essential preliminaries to efficient production has resulted in their incorporation as a matter of practice in modern mine planning. (2) The introduction of the car-bide bit and the re-introduction of the airleg drill, and the resulting sharp rise in productivity, were early postwar developments. (3) The recovery of the coarser fraction of mill tailings for use as mine backfill also is an important cost-reducing development of recent years -and this has led to cemented backfill, which, al-though more expensive, meets certain specific needs and has tremendous potential. (4) Great strides have been made in improving explosives' materials and explosives' accessories. Millisecond-delay electric blasting caps, which improve fragmentation and reduce the seismic effect of blasting, and the development and •application for underground use of explosives are but two among many such improvements. (5) Trackless mining methods, using quarry-type equipment in some instances and specially de-signed low-headroom trucks, loaders and carrier-mounted drills in others have been successfully applied. (6) Dual-purpose load-haul units are now in use loading and hauling from open stope drawpoints, and smaller versions of this type of unit are in use in cut-and-fill and other types of stopes."

The depletion of higher grade mineral reserves will accelerate the trend toward production from progressively larger and lower grade deposits. The discovery of adequate reserves of leaner ores will require the development of improved exploration techniques with a greater depth range. The principal challenges to the Canadian mining industry are to find the mineral resources required to meet fast growing world demand and to develop mining methods and equipment to ensure production costs which will strengthen our position in export markets in the face of in-creasing world competition. The challenges cannot be met without intensive efforts to attract more technical men to the industry and to improve their training.

Induced Polarization includes many types of dipolar charge distributions set up by the passage of current through consolidated or unconsolidated rocks. Among its causes are concentration polarization and electrokinetic effects in all rocks and the phenomenon of Overvoltage in rocks containing electronic conductors such as metallic sulphides and graphite. In normal rocks the polarization effects may be usually con-fined within relatively narrow limits and any large departures may be at-tributable to the presence of electronic conductors. In practice, Induced Polarization is measured in one of two ways. In the first a steady current of some seconds duration is passed and abruptly interrupted and the slowly decaying transient voltages existing in the ~round are measured after interruption. This is known as the "pulse", "transient", or Direct Cur-rent Induced Polarization (D.C.I.P.).The second method entails a comparison of apparent resistivities using sinusoidal alternating current of two or more frequencies, generally within the range of 1/10 to 10 c.p.s. "TEXADA Island is situated in the Strait of Georgia, about 100 miles northwest of Vancouver. The property of Texada Mines Ltd. lies on the southwest coast of the northern end of the Island. A part of the ""Sunshine Coast,"" the climate is moderate, with about 30 inches of rain during winter months and relatively dry summers. Texada has been shipping high-grade magnetite concentrate continuously since 1952 to Japanese ore buyers. In 1959, a 3,000-foot tunnel was driven just above sea level to explore the possible downward extension of known orebodies then being mined by open pit. In January of 1961, because the open-pit operations had a limited life, C. C. Huston and Associates were brought in as mining consultants to do a feasibility study on the possibility of going underground for production. This study was completed in March, 1961. With the completion of the report, the Company went to Japan seeking a ,long-term contract to justify the capital outlay necessary for setting up an underground operation. Concurrently, underground diamond drilling revealed more ore, and the Company planned some modifications to the concentrator for increasing the copper recovery. By November, 1961, a ten-year contract was signed with Japanese ore buyers for the sale of 450,-000 long tons of concentrates beginning in October, 1963. Since that time, the Company has built its own 65 000-ton ore carrier and an additional three-year contract has been negotiated, with an annual tonnage increase of from 450,000 to 550,000 tons."

Argentina reported about 40,000 tonnes of uranium (tU) as reasonably assured resources and inferred resources for the production cost category <130 US$/kgU in the OECD-NEA/IAEA classification scheme. These resources belong to the following projects: Sierra Pintada, Cerro Solo, Don Otto, Laguna Colorada, Laguna Salada, Meseta Central and Amarillo Grande. With three heavy water reactors in operation and an approximate installed capacity of 1.7 GWe, the current natural uranium requirements are about 220–250 tU per year. Based on various nuclear growth scenarios, it is estimated that by 2030 there will be a generation capacity of some 3,092 GWe for the reference case, with raw material needs of some 486 tU per year. Currently, there are no perspectives for local uranium production in the short term, and it is thought that uranium projects with identified resources must complete resource delineation and advance in technical pre-feasibility studies for the recovery of uranium. It is expected that Argentina continue meeting the uranium demand with imports in the next following years. In the Latin America region, both Brazil and Paraguay could be considered as potential uranium suppliers. In conclusion, despite the apparent growth prospects for the use of nuclear energy to generate electricity in Argentina, there are no immediate prospects for the provision of uranium oxide concentrates from domestic deposits for fuel fabrication. This has implications for supply and energy security.

"The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

THE National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geological Sciences was established seven years ago - in 1949. In 1952, shortly after the Committee had really begun to function and had issued its first report, a paper ( l) was presented describing the objectives and organization of the Committee and the progress to that time. Another four years have gone by and the Committee feels a further progress report may be of interest. HISTORY Ten years ago, in 1946, the Geology Division of the Institute set up a Committee on Geological Research. This Committee, under the Chairmanship of Dr. J. E. Hawley, recommended that "a National Advisory Committ.ee on Research in the Geological Sciences be formed" (2). With the backing of the President and Council of the C.I.M. this recommendation went forward to the then Minister .of Mines and Resources and, with his approval, to the Committee on Scientific and Industrial Research of the Privy ?Council. As a result, the National Advisory Committee was set up in 1949.

The heat pipe is a self-contained, passive structure that uses a liquid-vapour fluid cycle to provide high thermal conductance . Through the proper selection of working fluids and container materials, heat pipes have been operated at temperatures ranging from less than -300°F to more than 3,000 °F. The passive nature, high efficiency and configuration flexibility of the heat pipe are presented. The application of McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company Cryo-Anchor® heat pipes for foundation and support stabilization in permafrost regions is discussed. Using the proven Cryo-Anchor technology base. a proposed application of heat pipes in a cold -region mine ventilation system heat recovery heat exchanger is presented. Information obtained from the development of an air-cooled heat pipe steam condenser provides the technical basis for large -scale heat pipe applications.

"Recently, small sized micro-needles for medical are required more frequently by patients. The biggest reason is that it presents great burden on the patients, due to the size of the needle injection. People need to use a very small needle to lower the pain, but the downfall is that it makes them more expensive due to their complicated manufacturing method. Therefore, we need to fabricate a needle by wire-drawing to decrease its price. Tube-drawing is beneficial for its production value; however, in conventional tube-drawing it is difficult of control the wall thickness of the tube and makes it 1mmor lower in diameter. That is why, we propose fluid-mandrel drawing for new tube drawing. This method allows fabrication of a fine tube by using the pressure of the fluid in the tube. In this research, the goal is the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing and its evaluation. Finally, the fabrication of a fine tube by fluid-mandrel drawing was conducted and in result a tube with a diameter of 0.2mm, high strength and thin wall and fine inner surface was drawn, which can be used as a lesser pain micro-needle.INTRODUCTIONThe main manufacturing method of the current medical needles is roll forming. With this method, it is difficult to make a tube with a diameter lower than 1mm. Deep drawing has been proposed and used as method to further reduce the diameter, but this method is costly and the injection needle obtained by this method is several times more expensive.Therefore, we need to obtain a fine medical needle by drawing process that can be mass-produced and inexpensively manufactured. However, with the conventional drawing process, it is not possible to obtain a syringe needle with a reduced diameter easily, that is why, a fluid-mandrel drawing has been proposed which can reduce the diameter without damaging the inner surface. The methodology of the method is, a fluid is filled in the sealed tube and the pressure inside the tube during drawing is responsible for the good inner surface and wall thickness. It is also expected that the fluid can be easily discarded and that the tube can be manufactured on a long scale."

On the other hand, we recognize that short-term issues are important and, as we are reading and hearing, many of the right short-term solutions continue to elude our politicians, our policy makers, and even some of those with knowledge and authority in the energy field.A year ago, if you asked people how they would go about conserving energy, they would probably have said turn out the lights. They would probably say the same thing today, but they might also include other things such as driving the automobile more slowly or putting more insulation in the attic. The question of geophysical prospecting is one that is beginning to occupy a pre-eminent place in the minds of those actively concerned in the discovery and exploitation of ore deposits. This is in marked contrast to the reception accorded such ideas when the Junior author, six and a half years ago, began introducing electrical prospectii1g to the mining fraternity on this continent. Happily, the mention of geophysics no longer evokes the sceptical and pitying smiles that it did in those days. A little reflection will show that modern geophysical methods are merely a logical development from pre-existing technique. In the study of geological problems, is it not logical to use all possible physical properties of matter? The study of crystal form and cleavage, the examination of thin sections of minerals by means of polarized light or ordinary light, in fact, utilize physical properties of minerals for the benefit of the geologist. These are, of course, laboratory methods, and the extension of the study of similar properties into field work was inevitable. This began with the magnetometric surveys, used as early as 1760 in New Jersey to locate iron ores. Eighty-four years later, John Locke&apos;s work in the United States resulted in pointing out relationships between the terrestrial magnetic field and main tectonic features of the earth&apos;s crust.

Mineral exploration assessment file information has long been considered a useful resource for developing mineral exploration strategies, and one of the most common data sets fled in assessment reports is ground magnetic surveys. The new Earth Resources and Land Information System database (ERLIS) now provides a method for rapidly accessing all references to a specific area through a series of raster images. The ERLIS provides access to the Assessment File Research Imaging (AFRI) database which comprises geo-science mineral exploration assessment file data, Mineral Deposits Inventory (MDI), together with provincial aeromagnetic data from the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines(MNDM). Conversion of the raster images of ground geophysical data to vector data files together with the concatenation of grids from adjacent claims provides a method for constructing high resolution magnetic regional images. The value of this resource is demonstrated through the construction of a single composite magnetic image derived from eight assessment file grids for an area south of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within Pacaud and Catharine Townships. The composite grid of magnetic data provides a map with resolution that is not achieved by currently available Ontario Geological Survey airborne data sets. Details contained within the new high resolution image, permit the differentiation of lithologies and their boundaries, fault orientations and the location of alteration zones with magnetic response.
