For the first time in the history of the Venezuelan petroleum industry production exceeded 200 million barrels. The total production for all fields amounted to 205,430,869 bbl., which is more than 9 per cent of the world's 1939 total. This is an increase of over 15 million barrels or 8.0 per cent above the 1938 figure, which, compared with the slightly less than 2 per cent increase of the 1938 figure over 1937, shows the marked activity in Venezuela during the past year. The Maracaibo Lake fields are still the predominating factor in Venezuelan production, showing an increase of approximately 9½ million barrels over last year's figure and accounting for 71.8 per cent of Venezuela's total. Lagunillas continues to hold precedence as a single field, having yielded 47.1 per cent of the accumulative total and 39.4 per cent of 1939's total. This field showed an increase of slightly more than 3½ million barrels over 1938. Tia Juana, the second largest field, attained a record production, increasing its percentage of the Venezuelan total from 23.4 in 1938 to 23.7 in 1939. The La Rosa field, which includes Punta Benitez and Ambrosio, declined from 13.7 to 12.0 per cent; Bachaquero, the southernmost Lake field, which came into regular production at the end of 1938, contributed over 31/3 million barrels. Quiriquire, in eastern Venezuela, ousted La Rosa as the third largest producing field, and, although production increased by 11/3 milliorl barrels, percentage of the total declined from 13.2 to 12.9. Mene Grande, the oldest field, declined from 6.6 per cent in 1938 to 5.9 in 1939. Tem-blador produced for a whole year for the first time and yielded 3,647,867 bbl. The Colon district, in the Maracaibo Lake area, comprising the Tarra-Los Manueles fields, showed slight increases, as also did Cumarebo and Pedernales. Construction of the 16-in. pipe line from Oficina to Puerto La Cruz (Guanta), the longest line of this size in the world, was completed toward the end of the year and this new field in eastern Venezuela started shipping oil in December. This field is operated by the Mene Grande Oil Co. and was credited with a production of 2,347,625 bbl. in 1939. Jusepin field, some 25 miles southwest of Quiriquire in eastern Venezuela,

Sulfide mineral flotation has been applied to all naturally occurring sulfides and several synthetics. Of even more importance is the fact that economic separations are now being made between sulfides of essentially all the different metals. The variety of methods and minerals involved in such practice make it difficult to characterize them except in terms of general factors which influence the practices used. Ore grade and mineral composition are the major factors determining the processing method and the extent to which processing must be carried to achieve optimum economic return for a given ore. Since the choice of treatment is also affected by such factors as mine location, shipping charges, smelter schedules, each ore is a separate problem even though mineralization may be similar; The dissemination of minerals in the ore naturally determines the fineness of grind required for liberation. However, since grinding costs are a major part of most milling costs, emphasis has been placed on means of rejecting gangue minerals at the coarsest size possible. This has led to increased flotation of middling products or bulk concentrates for subsequent regrind and retreatment. Reagent development has also played an important part in present plant practice. Relatively few new frothers and collectors have found application during the past 25 years and many have disappeared. In general practice, re- agent combination choice is now fairly consistent with the type of collector being chosen on the basis of the mineral to be floated, the frother on the basis of pulp alkalinity, and the modifiers primarily on the basis of minerals to be rejected. REPRESENTATIVE FLOTATION PLANTS The milling operations described in this chapter have been selected primarily to illustrate these differences in ores and processing methods for the major types of ore minerals. The compositions of these minerals are shown in Table 1. These concentrators were chosen as representatives, both on the basis of geographic location and mineral content of the ore treated. At least one mill is included from each of the major producers, but the primary object was to show the practice employed for the various ore minerals and the different approaches to the middling problems encountered. The individual plants which have contributed data to this study are listed in Table 2, with a summary of their operating data, and are discussed in the order shown.

THE progress of mineral industry education will be limited to the period prior to World War II and will be considered as primarily a division of engineering education. Its relation to progress in the mineral industry and to the activities of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will be emphasized. The history of mineral industry education has been recorded most completely and authoritatively by Dr. T. T. Read in his recent volume in the Seeley W. Mudd Series of American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers publications, entitled, The Development of Mineral Industry Education in the United States. Therefore, most of the historical details will be omitted from the discussion and an effort will be made to point out significant developments and to analyze trends. INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT AND SIGNIFICANT POINTS IN PROGRESS Among the significant points in the development of mineral industry education in the United States since 1871, the following deserve particular mention: I. The number of institutions offering undergraduate instruction has increased, particularly during the years 1890 to 1925; the number of students enrolled in undergraduate study has increased greatly, largely on account of the development of courses in petroleum engineering and increasing interest in metallurgy. 2. The selection of students to be admitted to undergraduate courses has been improved through the advisement, counseling, and guidance programs sponsored by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development. 3. Improved instruction methods and the training of the teaching staff have been promoted by the educational institutions themselves, but with the most effective stimulus and guidance of the American Society for Engineering Education and the Engineers' Council for Professional Development. 4. The accrediting of undergraduate curricula through the Engineers' Council for Professional Development, considering both qualitative and quantitative criteria, has done much to improve standards of instruction in engineering education for the mineral industry. 5. Undergraduate curricula and courses are revised currently to meet the needs of the American mineral industry. New curricula are developed currently to permit specialization in technical fields, particularly in the fourth year of undergraduate work. 6. There has been a strengthening of the fundamental courses in mathematics, physics, mechanics, and chemistry, and at the same time these courses are being adapted to the most recent developments in the industry, including metallurgy, geophysics, petroleum engineering, petroleum technology, ceramics and so forth. 7. There has been continuing improvement in plant and laboratory facilities of the educational institutions.

Glass squares compressed on edge by steel jaws in poor contact with them developed jagged "partial-contact" cracks caused by the formation of local tensile stresses. Compressed by steel jaws in perfect contact, they developed smooth "release cracks" during release of the pressure, caused by the formation of local tensile stresses during the release of the pressure. All these cracks were parallel to the pressure. A Microflash photograph of a disintegrating specimen under sufficient pressure reveals a network of fractures roughly normal to each other, also "release cracks" and a disintegration cloud. The Griffith theory is amended to account for the formation of a first crack. A new theory, based on the theory of thermal agitation and wave propagation, is proposed to account for the progress, velocity and forking of cracks. The network of fractures is shown to have been caused by reflection at a free boundary of pressure pulses emanating from a first crack. Postulating equal distribution of energy in the pulses emitted on either side by a crack in particles, the smaller fragments are shown to continue fracturing preferentially while some of the coarser fragments remain as residual pieces. As comminution of the smaller fragments proceeds, the solid is reduced to a collection of residual particles of smaller and smaller sizes, accounting for the disintegration cloud. Experimental Procedure Apparatus A crushing device was built, consisting of a steel frame and two polished, hardened steel jaws to crush plate-glass samples. This device was placed between the plates of a hydraulic press (Fig. I). For centering the pressure, the upper jaw was guided vertically and provided with a rounded top. Later it was replaced by a steel jaw ground out of a 2½-in. steel ball, the lower surface being ground to an optical flat (Fig. 2). Four rollers were used to eliminate side thrust. Screws and centering blocks served to center the specimen in the crushing device. Hard steel shims placed under the shoulder of the upper jaw limited the "follow through'' of the jaw after failure of the specimen. Stress distribution was first examined with a polariscope mounted on an optical bench, using monochromatic light. It was found convenient to mount polaroid, quarter wave and monochromatic plates directly on the device itself. A Microflash unit* was used as light source for the photographs. (communication to the Secretary*) :—Although Mr. Bordeaux prefaces his paper with the statement-that it is a general outline of practice in the Republic, many of his statements seem to be made from the view-point of a particular case, which does not always agree with general practice. For the purpose of calling attention to some of these variations, I respectfully offer the following comments: The operation of crushing and grinding is performed by so many different methods and systems that it is useless to select any one as the standard. However, primary crushing in rock-breakers followed by stamps is thus far so general that it might be so classified. Whether or not it is the best way, is open to question. Regrinding may be performed by any of the various types of Chilean mills, Huntington mills, or similar machines, or the material may be taken directly from the stamps and delivered to the tube-mills. Mr. Bordeaux's statement that " the slimes can be treated only by decantation; the new Butters slime-filter, as used in Nevada, does not seem to be successful with silver-ores," is surely an error. All over Mexico many of the purely silver-ores are being successfully handled by the Butters or similar filters, such as the Moore and the Burt filters, and a letter to the manufacturers of these filters will undoubtedly bring a list of the silver-ores now being successfully treated in this way. The statement that crushing silver-ores in solution is impossible is equally erroneous. Most modern mills crush the ore in solution, in some cases containing as much as 0.12 per cent, of KCN. I cannot for the moment recall any modern mill in Mexico which does not follow this practice. There may be some reason for it in particular instances, but, generally speaking, the practice is to crush in solution. Care in installation avoids any mechanical loss of cyanide, and the chemical loss is so small as to be negligible.

THE American oil 'industry has reached the critical stage where the demand exceeds the supply with no hope of permanently bettering the situation through the development of new fields in the United States. Remedies may be sought along three lines: 1. Securing a foreign source of supply. 2. Curtailment of the use of oil and its derivatives. 3. Improvement in methods of recovery (including the recovery of shale oil), refining, and utilization. The oil companies with proper government support will push the acquiring of foreign territory; the price of oil and oil products will enforce a curtailment in use; it remains for the producers and refiners to brings about improvements and economy in recovery, transportation and refining; the general public must be instructed in utilization. The solution of the problem, therefore, rests largely in the hands of the technologists of the industry -the drillers, engineers, geologists, chemists, etc. Only through an exchange of the ideas of the individuals who are conducting the industry will its technology be advanced. , Among the agencies at work to bring about this result are the United States Bureau of Mines, the American Petroleum Institute, and the A. I. M. E. The Bureau of Mines has a trained staff of experts, maintains experiment stations and a field force of technologists, and issues many technical papers helpful to the industry. The Petroleum Institute is a clearing house for useful statistics and is now. organizing a research division under the able direction of Doctor Manning, but its principal field of activities is in the realm of co¬ordinating ?the financial and commercial activities of the` oil' companies.' It remains for the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to organize the individual technologists of the industry and provide them with means of exchanging and disseminating ideas through meetings and publications. It is the aim of the Petroleum Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to foster this exchange of ideas among oil men by enlarging the membership of the Institute among the field and office technical forces of the oil companies and thus arouse their interest in the vital problems of the oil business.

THE 144th* meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York, Feb. 18 to 21, 1935. It consisted of the annual business meeting, 45 technical sessions at which 216 papers were presented (approximately the same number of sessions and papers as at the previous annual meeting), two sessions of the Board of Directors, three meetings of Section delegates, two formal lectures and two addresses, luncheon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for members and guests, six group dinners and eight group luncheons, ten committee meetings, the annual reception and dinner dance, an informal dance, a smoker-dinner and the annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary. Attendance was generally greater than for the two preceding meetings; the statistics follow (figures are in the order 1935-1934-1933); total registration, 1609-1534-1475; dinner dance, 577-543-426; dinner-smoker, 490-425-394; informal dance, 279-295-250; women's registration, 179-160-133; general luncheons, 1132-1034-734. The Coal Division held two general sessions on Monday and a symposium on coal-mine ventilation on Tuesday morning. The Committee on Bituminous Planning, Edward Steidle, chairman, presented a report at the Monday morning session. C. B. Huntress, President of Appalachian Coals, Inc., was the principal speaker at the luncheon on Monday, at which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Division, presided. Mr. Huntress was preceded by Howard N. Eavenson, President of the Institute, who spoke briefly. The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coal met Wednesday afternoon. A feature of the meeting concerning three Divisions-Iron and Steel, Institute of Metals, Petroleum-was the symposium on Use of Metals in the Petroleum Industry, Thursday morning and afternoon. Five of the papers presented at this symposium have been published in METALS TECHNOLOGY'. Another feature, of general interest, was the Tuesday morning session in the Auditorium, devoted to Federal Government and Mineral Industries. Dr. C. K. Leith delivered the principal address, on "A, Mineral Policy for the United. States." . Having had for many years the management of magnetite mines, and having noted the various admixtures, such as jasper, " green rock," actinolite, etc., that occur so frequently in the deposits and make the fine ore so difficult as well as expensive to sort by hand, I studied the different ways of mechanical sorting, but found none eatisfactory—the universal objections being the expense, the small quantity that could be handled per hour, and the low grade of ore produced after all. Feeling that some means would be discovered ultimately for concentrating the small ore, I began at the Michigamme mine, at Michigamme, Lake Superior, Michigan, to separate it from the larger and richer lumps, by placing in all the shaft-houses screens of round iron bars set 1/4-inch apart, on which the skips were dumped as they were hoisted; the coarse ore going into one stock-pile or into cars, and the small ore, from 2 or 3 inches diameter down to powder, going into a special stock-pile, to be treated as soon as some proper means was found to separate the ore from the rock and ether impurities. Careful investigations showed that neither dry nor wet concentration was the right process for us; and I finally studied the magnetic process. Not knowing of any magnetic separator in this country that would handle such large pieces of ore as I wished to treat, I looked abroad and found in Sweden the Wenstrom separator. One of these machines was brought to the United States and tested in New Jersey and other places. (See the papers of Messrs. Cook and Birkinbine, Trans., xvii., 599 and 728.) This original separator, having 15-inch face of drum, I brought to the Michigamme mines, and, no one having confidence in it, placed it in operation at my own expense. Finding that in this way large ore could be treated much better by magnetic separators than by hand, and with much greater enrichment of the product, I put up a small, crude mill with several series of screens, so as to size the material and

My attention having been called several years ago to the possibility of increasing the yield of coke per ton of coal, as obtained in certain bee-hive ovens, I called the attention of the Institute to the matter at the New York meeting in 1899. I have had occasion since to witness the indifference with which this matter is ordinarily considered, and, on the other hand, the marked improvement which comes from even a most perfunctory effort in that direction; and I am almost tempted to say that nothing in connection with the coking of coal is at present so important. There are other factors, which are fundamental and necessary; but they have been considered already ; while the question of yield is, as a rule, absolutely ignored, or some figure is taken as the result of a special burning of one or two ovens, and the assumption is made that the whole battery is yielding at that rate. The uncertainty of this assumption I may illustrate by saying that, in my own observation, the burning of a single oven in a battery frequently gives, by actual weight, as much as 69 or 70 per cent. of merchantable coke, while the battery as a whole was yielding only an average of 63 per cent. Only from careful records, checked at least once a month, of the weight of the coal going to the ovens and the weight of coke produced, can any correct idea of the actual yield be gained, or methods be modified so as to produce good results; yet, as a rule, the crudest estimates are usually the only available data. In many cases there are reasons for this loose practice. The coal is mined by measurement; the payment for drawing the ovens is in proportion to the amount of cod which goes to them; and, not uncommonly, the royalty is so much a ton of coke, not of coal. Manganous oxide is readily soluble in concentrated ammonia solutions containing ammonium salts. Lixiviants of ammonia and ammonium carbamate permit ready extraction of manganese from reduced ores and the manganese in such solutions may be precipitated by heating to transform the carbamate to carbonate. THE widespread occurrence of manganese in low grade oxide and carbonate ores not amenable to mechanical concentration has led to extensive investigations of hydrometallurgical methods for producing a pure manganese compound suitable for further treatment. Manganese carbonate is the preferable compound. This product when fully crystalline and of not too fine crystal size is easily filtrable and stable in air. It can be converted to other compounds such as the oxides by heating in air or can be reacted with acids for producing salts. A useful hydrometallurgical process must produce relatively concentrated solutions that can be purified easily, reagents must be cyclically used, and heat requirements must be small. Neither the ammonium sulphate nor sulphur dioxide leaching processes that have been tested extensively fulfill these requirements. Manganous oxide is readily soluble in concentrated ammonia solutions containing ammonium salts. Lixiviants of ammonia and ammonium carbamate permit ready extraction of manganese from reduced ores and the manganese in such solutions may be precipitated by heating to transform the carbamate to carbonate. THE widespread occurrence of manganese in low grade oxide and carbonate ores not amenable to mechanical concentration has led to extensive investigations of hydrometallurgical methods for producing a pure manganese compound suitable for further treatment. Manganese carbonate is the preferable compound. This product when fully crystalline and of not too fine crystal size is easily filtrable and stable in air. It can be converted to other compounds such as the oxides by heating in air or can be reacted with acids for producing salts. A useful hydrometallurgical process must produce relatively concentrated solutions that can be purified easily, reagents must be cyclically used, and heat requirements must be small. Neither the ammonium sulphate nor sulphur dioxide leaching processes that have been tested extensively fulfill these requirements. For his achievement in building the Panama Canal, Major-Gen. George W. Goethals was presented, on May 22, the John Fritz medal, the highest mark of distinction in the engineering profession. In the absence, in Europe, of Clemens Herschel, chairman of the Board of Award, Charles F. Rand presided over the meeting. Col. John J. Carty, who was chairman of the Board of Award at the time the medal was awarded to Gen. Goethals, and who ordinarily would have presented the medal, was detained in Paris by Government work, so the presentation was made by Ambrose Swasey. When calling the assembly to order, the Chairman said: This medal has been awarded by a Board representing four of the National Engineering Societies: American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The medal was established in 1902, in honor of that great American engineer, John Fritz, and has never been awarded except to very distinguished men. In. 1902, the first award was made to John Fritz for scientific and industrial achievement. In 1905, to Lord Kelvin for his work in cable telegraphy and other scientific attainments. In 1906, to George Westinghouse for the invention and development of the air brake. In 1907, to Alexander Graham Bell for the invention and introduction of the telephone. In 1908, to Thomas A. Edison for the invention of the duplex and quadruplex telegraph, the phonograph, the development of a commercially practical incandescent lamp, the development of a complete system of electric lighting, including dynamos, regulating devices, underground system protective devices and meters. In 1909, to Charles T. Porter for his work in advancing the knowledge of steam engineering and in improvements in engine construction. In 1910, to Alfred Noble for notable achievements as a civil engineer. In 1911, to Sir William H. White for notable achievements in naval architecture. In 1912, to Robert W. Hunt for his contributions to the early development of the Bessemer process. In 1914, to Professor John E. Sweet for his achievements in machine design. In 1915, to Dr. James Douglas for notable achievement in mining, metallurgy, education, and industrial welfare. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA San Francisco Section The San Francisco Section of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America held a joint meeting with the local section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers at the Engineers' Club, San Francisco, on Tuesday, Apr. 16, 1918. The meeting was preceded by a dinner. Letters from the parent body in NewYork asking for the consideration of the proposed bill before Congress, and an expression of opinion relative to the appointment of a Federal Administrator of Mines justified the joint meeting of the local sections of the two mining societies, in that a more representative opinion of the engineers of California could he obtained. The meeting was called to order at 7:15 P.M. by Mr. Frank H. Probert acting as Chairman. About thirty engineers were present. Mr. Probert read a letter of March 14, from Secretary Huntoon, asking that the meeting be called. He read excerpts from Bulletin 117 of February 28, 1918, of the Mining and Metallurgical Society containing a copy of the proposed bill, so that all present might be advised of its essential contents. He briefly commented on the urgent need of such legislation and invited discussion of the subject. After long and thorough discussion on the part of the members present, Professor Lawson made the following motion: I move that a resolution expressing the sense of the joint meeting of the local sections of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and Mining and Metallurgical Society of America be forwarded to the secretaries of the two societies to the effect that we heartily approve of the purpose and intention of the bill designed to promote and stimulate the production of minerals necessary for the successful prosecution of the war; and that we suggest prices should be fixed for the period of the war and two years thereafter, and that these prices, guaranteed by the Government, should apply at the nearest shipping point to place of production of the minerals. This motion was carried. The meeting then adjourned, and a telegram was sent by Mr. Probert, the Chairman, to Mr. Huntoon, notifying him of the motion that had been carried at the meeting.

If 1929 witnessed a growing realization on the part of the oil industry that supply must be balanced against demand, 1930 proved conclusively that excessive inventories constitute a price depressant even with balanced conditions. Increased attention was certainly paid to economic considerations last year, and the achievement of holding daily crude production, with a constantly mounting potential, to levels 500,000 bbl. below the output of the summer before, deserves special mention. The ill-advised accumulation, however, of gasoline stocks, at least 10,000,000 bbl. larger than necessary, nullified the restraint exercised by the producers and finally necessitated drastic downward price revisions. An event of special significance was the appointment by the Federal Oil Conservation Board, last March, of a temporary Committee on Petroleum Economics that attempted a forecast of demand, an estimate of supply, and an allocation of the latter between the principal producing states. Thus for the first time was an economic program for an entire basic industry drafted by an independent body under the auspices of the Federal Government. The report was widely discussed and generally approved, but its schedules were not adopted by the refining division nor by oil producers in the State of Texas until too late to contribute to the industry's prosperity during 1930. If the restraint of November had been exercised in May a profitable year might have been the result: The gasoline price war in California during June, however, illustrated the point that even with a fairly sound statistical position insistent pressure to expand normal marketing outlets must result in losses to all concerned. The balanced program so painfully attained by producers must be maintained by refiners and distributors to be completely effective. Again in November the Federal Oil Conservation Board, acting on the request of the directors of the American Petroleum Institute, called its Committee on Petroleum Economics back into existence to prepare a new estimate for the next six months. An economic program adopted in advance of the winter period of accumulating inventories may aid this large and essential industry toward the profits to which it is entitled

It is generally understood by workers in the field of the crystal structure of metallic alloys that terminal solid solutions are of two types, the substitutional and the interstitial. In reviewing the literature, the work of Weissl on the crystal structure of the alpha copper-tin alloys was encountered, in which a new type of terminal solid solution was proposed. In brief, Weiss' findings showed that the density of the alloys calculated from the side of the unit face-centered cube on the assumption of simple substitution—that is, with four atoms to the unit face-centered cell—was much higher than the density measured directly. It was suggested that the assumption of four atoms to the unit cube is not valid for these alloys, and that each unit cube contained less than four atoms; in other words, that one tin atom replaces more than one copper atom, leaving some atomic positions unoccupied. Such a structure, if verified, would have far-reaching significance in the study of the crystal structure of metallic alloys. It would indicate a complexity in terminal solid solutions not hitherto suspected and might encourage work leading to the discovery of other alloys of the same type, and perhaps to types intermediate between it and the two recognized types. It is of importance, therefore, to reinvestigate these alloys with respect to the type of solid-solution structure obtaining therein. Materials and Experimental Method The alloys were prepared from electrolytic copper cut directly from the cathode and the high-purity tin furnished by the U. S. Bureau of Standards for the calibration of thermocouples. No analyses for impurities of these materials or of the finished alloys were made, since such impurities as might be present could have only a wholly inappreciable effect upon the data obtained and the conclusions drawn. The alloys were made by melting the weighed copper charge in a graphite crucible under a KCl-LiC1 flux with later additions of NaC1, using induction heating. We note with sincere regret the death of H. T. Chen,, who was killed by forest fire in the mountainous re-ion of Kokiu-Chang where he had been operating as Engineer in Chief of the Yunnan Tin Trading Co. Mr. Chen graduated in 1911 from the Department, of Mines, .University of California, being the first Chinese Government scholar in mining to attend that institution; and one of the first in America. He came of a distinguished family, many members of Which are in official life in Peking and in his native province of Hunan, all of whom are noted for their classical scholarship. He was himself a Hsiao-tsai or Bachelor of Arts, a coveted degree of the old literati class, Which he won under the Manchu regime when he was still a stripling. His mining work in Yunnan was carried on with only the most primitive facilities and in a distant province, but was, nevertheless, attended with great success and profit for his company. The region is infested with brigands and rebellious troops. who frequently turn marauders and prey upon the countryside, and Mr. Chen has had to go to the mines always with a large armed guard sometimes aggregating 150 men and some hundreds of miners, also armed. Two armed squads of men keep in touch with his base 'at Kokiu-Chang every day to get supplies and food, and it is feared that the brigands who have thus been prevented from plundering and mobbing his parties have started 'he fires to burn him out, with the disastrous result reported. Mr. Chen has thus given his life to his country in the attempt to win for modern China and Chinese civilization the raw materials of her new industrial life. He did so cheerfully and with full appreciation of the dangers that beset him, and China regards this as one of the most noble sacrifices of her young sons on the altar of patriotism. He is survived by a daughter of two years and by his widow who was also a graduate of the University of California and will be remembered by her classmates as Lucy Kong, 1912.
