THE results described in this article are based on field work conducted during the periods April-May, 1939, and May-July, 1940. The United States Potash Co. is mining potash on Government land under a permit from the Department of the Interior and the geophysical investigation was completed under a cooperative arrangement made between that company and the Conservation Branch of the Geological Survey. The writer, a member of the Section of Chemistry and Physics of the Geologic Branch, was assigned to this investigation. Four definite objectives were in mind for the geophysical work in the studies over the salt deposits. The first was to determine the measure of success that could be attained in this type of work with the resistivity methods that were to be employed. Schlumberger2 reported geophysical work performed in the discovery of the salt domes of Alsace; Carrette and Kelly3 described the geology of the same area. Leonardon and Kelly4 published a resistivity curve obtained over the Hettenschlag dome, and a further discussion of this same area was given by the Messrs. Schlumberger5 in a communication. Messrs. Alty6 described studies on salt deposits in which the single-probe method was used. Sinerez7 mentions that electrical methods were tried over salt deposits in Spain. Geoffrey and Charrin8 show a resistivity curve obtained over marl, gypsiferous marl and salt which is similar to that obtained over the New Mexico salt deposits. Kelly9 reported resistivity work performed with the ground comparator of Zuschlag over the salt deposits near Syracuse, N. Y., where the Salina formation is at a depth of 700 to B00 ft. Some structural studies on the potash basin of Alsace are described by Poldini.10 Another single-probe resistivity study, made over salt deposits in New Mexico, is briefly described by Heiland,11 through the courtesy of Harry Aurand, of the Midwest Refining Co.

The conventional cyclic system of deep-level mining by drilling and blasting gives rise to an inadequate degree of stope sorting when mining thin reefs. This results in poor utilization of the capital facilities of a mine in the form of shafts, haulages, airways, and associated equipment. Continuous and controlled removal of the thin gold-bearing portion of the reefs would permit better stope sorting and hence greater utilization of capital facilities. Results of experiments to develop hard-rock cutting machines for mining are reported and the benefits which could be derived from their use are discussed. Mining, from exploration through refining, is essentially a process of sorting in which the payable mineral, or metal, is progressively separated from the other constituents of the earth's crust with which it was originally associated. This takes place more distinctly at each step of the operation. What is it that determines the degree to which sorting should be carried out at each of the several steps comprising a whole mining operation? The formal answer is that degree of sorting at each step which results in the lowest overall cost for the complete separation. In practice, individual steps are chosen from those available in current technology, each of which effects a degree of sorting such that the quantity of material which must be sorted in the succeeding step is economically acceptable. It follows that any new technological development has repercussions throughout the whole mining operation and, more important, that the solution to excessive costs in any one step of the operation may lie not in improving the costly operation itself so much as in increasing the degree of sorting preceeding that operation. This concept, particularly in relation to deep-level mining of thin, tabular gold-bearing reefs in South Africa, is discussed here, and the most recent results achieved in the development of hard-rock cutting machines for stoping more selectively than is possible with explosives are presented. Deep-Level Mining Deep-level mining involves operations which are either not encountered, or are of only trivial importance, in near-surface mining. Near-surface, the major operations are those of rock breaking, transport, and milling. In deep-level mining, hoisting, environmental control, and strata control assume major importance. Some idea of the relative magnitude of these operations may be gained by comparing the separate amounts of energy which are required, or which must be controlled, to effect the various operations when, say, mining a tabular deposit 40 in. thick at 8000 ft below surface, Table 1. It is true that the costs of handling a given quantity of energy are not the same for each operation. Nevertheless, Table 1 does emphasize the fact that the operations of hoisting, strata control, and environmental control are of unique and major significance in deep-level mining. In particular, hoisting and environmental control place a heavy load on the reticulation system of the mine—the shafts, haulages, and airways. Typically, a new, deep gold mine with an annual revenue of about $35 million requires a total capital expenditure of about $140 million of which some $100 million is invested in developing and equipping this reticulation system. The ratio between annual turnover and capital invested of about one-quarter is exceptionally low, and it typifies the poor utilization of capital by the current technology of mining hard rock at depth. The average thickness of the reefs in the new South African goldfields varies from 10 to 30 in.,l and even in the thicker reefs the gold is often confined within a small fraction of the nominal thickness. Nevertheless, it is universal practice to mine these reefs at a stope width of about 40 in. or more, so that the quantity of rock broken in the stopes and hoisted out of the mine is between two and ten times the quantity of rock actually carrying a significant amount of gold. The reason for the adoption of such excessive stope widths is to be found in the method of rock breaking by drilling and blasting. The only free surface to which a blast hole can break is the stope face. It follows2 that each hole cannot have a burden in excess of the height of the free face if it is to break satisfactorily. To

Development in the Jackson gas field, Hinds and Rankin counties, for 1935 continued at a slow pace, there being only nine wells drilled on the structure, of which five resulted in gas producers and four in dry holes. There were no wells drilled deep enough during 1935 to test any of the horizons below the producing Selma chalk. There are 113 producing gas wells in the Jackson gas field, with three wells on the southeast edge of the field making some oil with a large quantity of salt water; this oil comes from the same horizon as the gas. The combined open flow of the 113 gas wells is about 4,100,000,000 cu. ft. The proven area of the field is approximately 8000 acres. The production of 10,291,000,000 cu. ft. for 1935 represents the largest yearly pull from the field by almost a billion cubic feet. The total production from the field to date is 45,104,000,-000 cu. ft. It is interesting to note that the rock pressure has dropped from 1010 lb. per sq. in. initial to 943 Ib. at the end of 1935, a decline of only 67 lb. in 6 years. There is a difference of opinion as to the age of the deepest formation tested on the Jackson structure; some people holding that it is Tuscaloosa, others, Trinity, and still others that it is Paleozoic, probably Pottsville. The production of the Amory gas field, Monroe County, continued to decline and the capacity was far under the demand. Originally there were four producing wells in the field with a combined open-flow capacity of approximately 15,000,000 cu. ft. and a rock pressure of 680 lb. per sq. in. At the end of 1935 only two wells were producing with a combined open-flow of less than 1 million cu. ft. and the rock pressure down to 100 lb. or less. No attempt has been made to drill new wells in the immediate field but three wells are being drilled in the county in an effort to secure new supplies of gas. The wildcat operations for 1935, with only 11 wells drilled, were the lowest since 1932, just about one-half the number drilled during 1934. None of the wildcat wells drilled in 1935 resulted in producers and, so far as the writer is aware, did not uncover any large structures. The 11 wells drilled were abandoned or junked at comparatively shallow depths, except the well drilled in George County to 6928 ft. by the United Gas

Church, New York City: It requires some courage to appear as a critic of a theory which is not only the fashion among American geologists but is usually presented by them in terms which imply that any other views are an exhibition of ignorance. Still, I am obliged to say that the theory of lateral secretion as it is stated in this and other writings of Mr. Emmons and other geologists has not added much to our real knowledge or clearness of view. In the earlier and less developed stages of the theory, when it was used as Sandberger used it, to show that certain veins were probably derived from the rocks in which they lie, or which are adjacent, it was valuable in pointing us to an immediate source of ore-deposition. When we are driven to assume the existence of undiscoverable rocks at an unknown but certainly a considerable distance and in an unknown direction from the vein, I do not see that we have improved upon the despised " unknown source in depth " with which our ignorance has been covered so long. The new theory may suffer from adolescence, and these points map be cleared up by further study, but I speak of it as it is. Differentiation in a magma, by which a metal is concentrated in one member of a series of outflows, may explain why certain ores have favored a given locality with their presence; but it is not a necessary precedent to ore-formation. Concentration in the source of supply cannot be a requirement, for the forces that have been able to take up four or five tons of gold from an extensive body of rock must be able to collect four or five thousand tons of lead, copper or nickel from a proportionately more extended body of rock. That is to say, concentration is no more essential for these metals than it is for gold. In fact, differentiation, as it is now explained, is not an advance upon old ideas, but a retreat from them. It was noticed long ago that violent eruptive phenomena, however long continued, died away in solfataras; and when a vein came to be looked upon as an extinct solfatara the inference was ready that veins are eruptive in the sense that the solfataric waters collected the metals from the unerupted residue of the magma and carried them to the veins. The early views carried differentiation further than the modern school.

The use of high vacuum on a large industrial scale in the ferrosilicon process for the production of magnesium marks the coming of age of an important new metallurgical technique. The economical production of reactive metals, such as magnesium, which combine with all the well-known furnace atmospheres, has until recently been successfully carried out only by electrolytic methods. It is now apparent that, through the use of high vacuum, the distillation or sublimation of many metals can be done industrially at much lower temperatures, and hence in much simpler equipment, than heretofore has been thought possible. At the beginning of the present emergency, when the ferrosilicon process of producing magnesium was brought to the fore, little was generally known about vacuum engineering, practices, and techniques. In a comparatively short time, the available equipment has been adapted, new equipment designed and built, and a fund of know-how evolved to make possible the production of thousands of pounds of magnesium per day at pressures less than 1/ r0,000 of an atmosphere. Pilot-plant operations have been consistently maintained at pressures even as low 2s one micron (0.001 mm.). These low pressures, which previously were regarded as prohibitively costly or impossible to attain, have been demonstrated as economically feasible on an industrial scale. Necessity for Vacuum The main function of vacuum in the ferrosilicon process, and hence in most vacuum smelting processes, is to lower the temperature at which the metal may be distilled or sublimed from the reduction mixture. A secondary function is to protect the distilled metal from attack by the furnace atmosphere and to permit the formation of a dense condensate. In the ferrosilicon process, magnesium is formed by the reaction between dolomite and ferrosilicon: 2(Mg0-Ca0) -\- HFeSU / t=> aMg + MFe + (CaO)2-SiO2 The metal is distilled from the pelleted charge at a free air pressure of about 0.100 mm. of mercury (100 microns). This low pressure is not needed for the reaction, but rather serves to protect the metal vapor from the oxygen or nitrogen of the atmosphere and permits the formation of a condensate free of pyrophoric material. The reaction proceeds at air pressures as high as several millimeters of mercury, and evidence has been offered to show that the actual equilibrium pressure of magnesium at operating temperatures of 2I50°F. is somewhat higher. A dc field was applied to liquid BI-Sx or Au-Ge alloys of eutectic composition. The liquid alloys were kept at a temperature slightly above the eutectic. The concentration changes due to electrodijfusion are large enough to cause nuclcation and growth of the primary phases at the respective electrodes. Nearly complete separation of Bi-Sn eutectic was obtained as well as substantial separation of Au-Ge eutectic. The effect of an electric field on the solute distrihn-tion was itluestignted itt tlirectiortally solidified rods of a dilute Bi-Sn (0.5 al. pc,t Bi) alloy. A direct current, passed through a liquid-metal solution, can cause substantial concentration changes by electrodiffusion. The magnitude of the change depends on the difference in ionic mobilities of the atomic species in solution. Electrodiffusion has been studied in many binary and ternary liquid alloys.&apos;y2 It was found that the rate of material transport decreases with time for a constant applied field, as a concentration gradient is established in the solution. A steady-state concentration profile is achieved when electro-diffusion is compensated by chemical diffusion. This may seem to limit the use of electrodif fusion for metallurgical application. However, a way of utilizing the effect of electrodiffusion is to combine it with crystallization or controlled freezing. rakin was first to propose this as a new method of separating metal alloys of eutectic composition at temperatures slightly above the eutectic temperature. It was possible by this method to separate Bi-Sn and Bi-Cd eutectics into their component phases. Angus et al discussed the possibility that the effective distribution coefficient, keff, could be varied by proper application of an electric field during solidification. The combination of electrodiffusion and solidification, called field-freezing, was discussed in detail by Pfann and aner. It was shown that field-freezing can be used as a crystal-growth process, an efficient method for eutectic separation, and a new means of changing the effective distribution coefficient. k,ff, beyond the usual range of ko < k,ff < 1. MANY hundreds of publications have appeared during the past 78 years that treat the subject of hydrogen in iron and steel,105 but conclusions regarding the functions of hydrogen in causing some important defects in steel are still unsatisfactory to many; and other hydrogen-caused phenomena yet remain to be identified with this gas. The most widely discussed of these defects is hydrogen embrittlement, but the conception, perhaps the popular one, that embrittlement is due to hydride formation does not conform to the known facts.104 The true identity of hydrogen embrittlement seems instead to lie in a mosaic nature of metal crystals, which is a concept not yet accepted by most metallurgists. A study of hydrogen embrittlement therefore provides new viewpoints in regard to the crystalline substructure of steel. A second widely discussed hydrogen-caused defect is the "flake" or "shatter crack." Although it is generally agreed that the presence of hydrogen is a prerequisite for their appearance, it is also realized that internal stress plays a decisive part. The relationship of hydrogen to internal stress has not been explained very clearly; nor is it always clear what the relationship is between a "flake" and a "snowflake," or between a "fish eye" and a "shatter crack." More importantly, the relationships among hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen-caused fissures such as "flakes" and the ultramicroscopic structure of steel have scarcely been recognized. The present investigation attempts to provide an explanation for the embrittlement of steel by hydrogen by showing cause for accepting the "block" concept of metal crystals, and then to show how the numerous hydrogen-caused defects are interrelated in the light of this concept. EVIDENCE OF SUBSTRUCTURE IN METAL CRYSTALS It appears that the concept of a crystal as an aggregate of smaller multi-atom units must be accepted in some form if the behavior of metals is to be understood. The abundant literature on the evidence of an ultramicroscopic "mosaic" structure in metals and other crystalline substances suggests that the physicist has provided the metallurgist with an invaluable new insight. The exact picturization that any one physicist provides may be open to question, but the fact that there is some such fundamental substructure seems undeniable. The present work makes no pretense of comprehensively treating the imperfection structure theories. Nor will conclusions be drawn here regarding the exact nature of the substructure of crystals. However, the acceptance of some imperfection theory of fundamental attributes seems so necessary to an understanding of the behavior of hydrogen in steel that the following brief

Production of oil and gas condensate from the 45 oil and gas fields of South Arkansas increased for the eighth consecutive year, the production for 1943 being 27,605,647 bbl. Six new pools were discovered during 1943, bringing the state&apos;s crude oil and condensate reserve to 475 million barrels, a net increase of 70 million barrels for the year. The gross increase in proven reserve was 98 million barrels, from which, of course, is subtracted production of approximately 28 million barrels to reach the net figure of 70 million barrels. There were 35 more wildcats in 1943 than in 1942, and 29 more wells were drilled in fields of the state. Sixteen companies operated exploratory crews during the year for a total of 677 crew weeks, divided as follows: 563 weeks seismograph, 111 weeks gravity and 3 weeks core drill. There was a decided increase in gravity work and a decrease in seismic work. The year started with 15 seismic crews and ended with 5 seismograph and z gravimeter crews. Geologically, it is interesting that the number of wells bottomed in Gulf, Comanche, and Jurassic strata were near equal for the year 1943. During 1942 Jurassic was much higher than the other two. However, Jurassic still led in wildcats for the year 1943. Abandoment of wells in the stripper areas of the state reached about the same figure for the year 1943 as for the year 1942; that is, 145 wells were permanently abandoned. Dual completion of wells, on concurrent production from two productive zones through a single well bore, became common practice in South Arkansas during the year. As the year ended, some 50 wells had been dually completed and it was estimated that the first 37 of these wells represented a saving of more than 2 1/4 million dollars and a saving in steel of 7000 tons. Production of oil and gas condensate from the 45 oil and gas fields of South Arkansas increased for the eighth consecutive year, the production for 1943 being 27,605,647 bbl. Six new pools were discovered during 1943, bringing the state&apos;s crude oil and condensate reserve to 475 million barrels, a net increase of 70 million barrels for the year. The gross increase in proven reserve was 98 million barrels, from which, of course, is subtracted production of approximately 28 million barrels to reach the net figure of 70 million barrels. There were 35 more wildcats in 1943 than in 1942, and 29 more wells were drilled in fields of the state. Sixteen companies operated exploratory crews during the year for a total of 677 crew weeks, divided as follows: 563 weeks seismograph, 111 weeks gravity and 3 weeks core drill. There was a decided increase in gravity work and a decrease in seismic work. The year started with 15 seismic crews and ended with 5 seismograph and z gravimeter crews. Geologically, it is interesting that the number of wells bottomed in Gulf, Comanche, and Jurassic strata were near equal for the year 1943. During 1942 Jurassic was much higher than the other two. However, Jurassic still led in wildcats for the year 1943. Abandoment of wells in the stripper areas of the state reached about the same figure for the year 1943 as for the year 1942; that is, 145 wells were permanently abandoned. Reagent control in flotation is more an art than a science. Operators vary the amount of re- agents used according to the metallurgy obtained. The amount of collector may be increased, for example, if tailings losses are high and decreased if concentrate grades are low. Often control decisions are based on only one assay, such as the tailings analysis by microscopic or quick assaying techniques. This method of control has given reasonably satisfactory results but is clearly far from perfect. No adjustment in reagent addition can be made until information is received that metallurgy has deteriorated, that is, until the optimum time for adjustment has already passed. The first adjustment probably will be an overcorrection or an undercorrection, and time will be required to establish the best new addition rates. The seriousness of the problem depends on variability of the ore. In ore of continually shifting composition and complexity, mill results will shift back and forth from excessively high concentrate grades and high tailings losses to excessively low concentrate grades and low tailings losses. Economic incentive for improved control also increases with increasing size of mill. Even a small improvement in percentage recovery in a large mill pays for expensive control equipment.

One of the most difficult problems associated with modern mechanised longwall mining is the lack of system flexibility to deal with local changes in geology, seam thickness and the face design parameters. As a consequence of system rigidity and the quest for increasing the coal face performance, the percentage extraction in the U.K. is currently below 52%. The paper outlines the current guidelines used in face design which permit coal to be left in situ for various purposes and discusses the strata control implications in extracting subsequent panels in the same and adjacent coal seams. The paper examines the application of strata mechanics to the design of longwall layouts for maximizing .the percentage of coal extraction. Remedial measures include optimizing pillar dimensions, reduction in roof coal left for support purposes by improving the use of available powered support technology and application of thick seam mining methods including sub-level caving and techniques of extracting coal from odd shaped pillars. Case studies are described where coal extraction has been maximized by adopting a new single heading retreat mining system; a shallow seam partial extraction system utilizing, existing heading machines and minimisin8 coal sterilization in pillars by replacing longwall access roadways by goaf scour.

At the dawning of the first century of AIME, mechanical handling of bulk materials was largely confined to movement of grain and light mill products by belt and screw conveyors, but grain handling experience inevitably led to the use of the belt conveyor for coal, ore and other heavier materials. In 1891, the first major U.S. conveyor installation for heavy minerals was completed at the Edison, N.J., plant of the New Jersey & Pennsylvania Concentrating Co. Functionally, this plant revealed its grain elevator heritage. Overlooked at the time of design or, perhaps more accurately, not fully recognized, were the dramatic differences between grain and minerals in both operating conditions of the system and the physical characteristics of the material to be conveyed. This inevitably caused problems, but from the ashes of these problems rose solutions. The Edison plant became a proving ground from which came two significant developments by Thomas Robins-the first conveyor belt designed specifically for impact loading and abrasive materials and the three-roll conveyor idler. As an installation with more than 50 conveyors in widths of 20-30 in. and belt centers of up to 500 ft, the plant was a landmark, for it established the belt conveyor as a vital method of trans- porting heavy, abrasive materials.

TWO analytical methods for calculating the positions of matrix and twin reflections on electron-diffraction patterns of a twinned cubic crystal have recently been published.1,2 Meieran and Richman1 considered the case of twinning on (1 12) in a bcc structure, while a more general treatment, capable of analyzing twinning on any plane in a cubic crystal, was developed by Johari and Thomas.2 The latter authors applied their general rotation matrix to both (111) twinning in face-centered crystals and {112} twinning in body-centered crystals and they derived separate expressions for these two cases. This separate treatment masks the fact that in a holosymmetric cubic crystal a (111) twin is crys-tallographically equivalent to a {112} twin.3 This is analogous to the crystallographic equivalence of rotation and reflection twins in centrosymmetric crys tals. A particularly simple example of this equivalence occurs when the two twin planes are perpendicular to each other—for example (111) and (112). Then, if twinning on (111) moves a point P to a new position P1, and twinning on (112) moves P to P2, P1 and P2 will be related to each other by a 180-deg rotation about [110]— the direction normal to both (111) and (112). Since there are diad axis axis along (110) direction in a holosymmetric cubic crys tal the two positions P1 and P2 must be crystallo-graphically equivalent. In other words if a particular pole (hk l) is in a position P1 after twinning on (Ill), then after twinning on (112) a pole of the type {hkl}—but not the particular pole (hk1)—will also be in the position P1. As a result, when only the general (as opposed to the particular) indices of poles after twinning are required, twinning on (111) gives the same results as twinning on (112). To convert the results for a (111) twin to those applicable to a (112) twin, when the particular (as opposed to the general) indices of poles after twinning are required, all that is necessary is to multiply the indices of the twin poles by the matrix for 180-deg rotation about [lie], i.e., The analytical methods suffer the disadvantage that a new set of calculations must be performed for each different diffraction pattern or, as is done in the Meieran and Richman treatment,1 a lengthy list of the location of the twin spots in reciprocal space must be prepared. All the tedious computation involved in these analytical approaches can be avoided by simply plotting, on tracing paper, a stereographic projection of a crystal twinned on say (112). By superimposing this twin stereogram on a standard (001) projection (preferably with the points and indices in a different color from those on the twin stereogram) the relative positions of both matrix and twin reflections can be determined by inspection. record with the Royal Flying Corps was considered a remarkable one, for he was at the front within two months of the date on which he was granted a commission, during which interval he took the prescribed technical course at Oxford, and aviation training at Netheravon and Bristol. On Sept. 14, 1916, he took his first flight over the German lines, when his engine stalled and he had to volplane down, fortunately landing on the French side of the lines. On Sept. 16, he went over the lines with six others, and not returning immediately with the others, was lost. He tried to make for the sea and come back following the course of a river, but when he did descend he found that he was 60 miles west of Paris and 100 miles south of his lines. He flew over to Paris and stayed there for the night, going back to his squadron the next morning. Then on Oct. 4, he was sent up at night for the first time, and in making a landing he passed the flares just as he struck the ground, which put him in total darkness. He struck something and his machine turned a complete somersault, which accident put him in the hospital for ten days. In December, 1916, he left the 21st Squadron and was transferred to the 24th, as the 21st was made an Artillery Squadron and he preferred to remain a fighting scout. In the same month, he was made Acting Flight Commander for about 6 weeks, and about April 3, 1917, his rank of Flight Commander was confirmed. The beginning of May he started to introduce a number of new machines for his squadron, these being of an entirely new type. On May 19, he was up with one of the machines in the evening, practising sharp turns and dives, when the wings suddenly crumpled up and he fell 700 ft., being killed instantly. He was buried in a French Cemetry at Monchy Lagache about 8 miles southeast of Perronne, and about 25 miles east of Amiens. Sergeant Herbert Moore Harbach Herbert Moore Harbach was born in Lebanon, Pa., Apr. 4, 1891, graduated from the Lebanon High School in 1911, and entered State College from which he received his degree of Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering in 1915. He was employed by the Lackawanna Iron Co., at Buffalo, W. Y., and was later transferred to their Lebanon plant to start up the newly erected benzol plant. He was later made foreman of the coke ovens, which position he held after it was bought by the Bethlehem Steel Co., and until he enlisted in the service of his country in September, 1917. He was stationed at Camp Meade, Md., until the spring of 1918, when he was transferred to the C. W.
