The correlation of power consumed by a tumbling mill with the dimensions, speed, and load has been attempted by three principal methods. One of these, the torque formula, has been reviewed critically elsewhere.' This approach, while analytical, disregards the individual motion and speed of the tumbling bodies and assumes that the gross geometry of the entire load is sufficient to establish the power requirement. A more general approach, using dimensional analysis, has been applied in this laboratory by the present authors1'1, and more recently by Rose.3 This disregards the internal conditions within the mill entirely and in effect is an empirical procedure for correlating data. Finally, the complete analysis of tumbling mill dynamics as first made by Davis' attempts to develop the power requirement from individual ball and rod paths and velocities. Although Davis' result is applicable only at a single speed for a given size and load it could be useful, since his optimum speed is at the upper limits of conventional tumbling mill practice. Where power values predicted by the Davis equation were compared with actual mill requirements, they were found too low for small mills and much too high for the largest mills. This suggested that the agreement with actual intermediate range requirements might be fortuitous, and the development of the equation was examined critically. The probable source of error was found to lie in an erroneous assumption made by Davis in converting the energy of ball or rod motion to power. With the same approach, but with different assumptions, a modified equation has been obtained which predicts results that are usually consistently high. This is to be expected, since it is assumed that there is no slip between load and shell and no interference among tumbling bodies. Both these effects should account for the difference. Development of Equation: When a cylindrical shell charged with a substantial weight of rods or balls is slowly rotated about a horizontal axis, the load surface first assumes an inclination that gradually increases to a maximum. Continued rotation results in failure within the load, characterized by a sliding of the top layers down the slope and a reduction in the angle of inclination. Further rotation again increases the angle, and the cycle repeats. If the speed is increased, there is continuous load failure and build-up and a continuous stream of rods or balls descends over the upcoming mass, which moves in circular arcs. RECENT interest in thermoelectric devices has been directed toward studies of the properties of thermoelectric materials of semiconducting solid compounds with little attention given to ionic and semiconducting liquids such as aqueous solutions, fused salts, and mattes. One type of thermoelectric system is the thermocell: a nonisothermal galvanic cell with two identical electrodes at different temperatures connected by an electrolyte bridge. An electromotive force, v, is generated which is a function of the electrode reactions and the properties of the electrolyte according to the Eastman' equation: where S* is the entropy change of the system arising from the electrode reactions and by heat transferred by ion migration and by thermal conduction. The quantity nF is the product of equivalents passed and Faraday's constant. A value of S* of 23.06 cal per "C is equivalent to 1 mv-Faraday per "C. The symbol, a, is used for dV/dT in analog to the See-beck coefficient of solid-state thermoelements. de Bethune2 has calculated the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force of a large number of nonisothermal aqueous cells from measurements on the nonisothermal temperature coefficients of the standard hydrogen electrode, combined with data on the isothermal temperature coefficients of half-cells tabulated in the literature. Values of these coefficients (a) in de Bethune's compilation ranged up to 3 mv per C. In particular he reported a value of +2.059 mv per "C at 25'C for the cell: Fe (aqueous, unit activity) (aqueous, unit activity) written for the hot-electrode reaction. The positive sign indicates that the hot electrode is positive (an "n-type thermocell"). In analog to a solid-state p-n system, it would be possible to couple two thermocells together to form a system in which the figure of merit could be calculated by adding the temperature coefficients according to the relationship described by offee:' where a is the Seebeck coefficient in volts per "C, p is the specific resistivity in ohm-cm, and K is the thermal conductivity in watts per cm "C. Even though ionic systems have rather high electrical resistivities compared with semiconducting and metallic systems, it was felt that a preliminary study of one ionic system should be made to establish some basis for evaluating the possibility of a p-n thermocell for energy conversion. Accordingly the Fe", Fe"' system was studied as a possible component for a p-n system. A glass system was constructed consisting of two vertical water-jacketed tubes connected by a horizontal tube, Fig. 1. Platinum-black electrodes 1 cm by 1 cm in dimension were inserted in each vertical tube with thermometers to register the electrode-compartment temperatures. The temperature of the electrode compartments was controlled by circulating water from thermostatted baths around the electrode compartments. The electromotive force of the cell was then read by a potentiometer for zero current as a function of the temperature of the hotter electrode. Current output of the cell for varying external loads was also measured. The cell resistance was measured by means of a bridge circuit with 10,000 cps signal and oscilloscope. Resistance measurements were converted to specific resistivity by calibrating the cell with a solution of known conductivity.

WESTERN phosphate resources which lie in Ida- ho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming, have seen great expansion of activity in recent years. Growth has been two-pronged: expansion in fertilizer use, and since 1949, into the elemental phosphorous industry. Elemental phosphorous, produced in the electric furnace, goes largely into chemical making. Phosphate ore was first recognized in the West about 1889. Production started in 1906, and for many years consisted of underground operations by small companies operating sporadically. In 1920 Anaconda Copper Mining Co. opened the underground Conda mine near Soda Springs in southeastern Idaho, and has maintained and increased its operations since then. About 1930 Montana Phosphate Products Co. began underground mining in Montana and has remained a steady producer. In 1945 San Francisco Chemical Co., one of the oldest companies in the western field, initiated strip mining at the Waterloo mine near Montpelier, Idaho, and later at Leefe mine near Sage Junction, Wyo. In1946 J. R. Simplot Co. began open pit mining at Gay mine near Fort Hall, Idaho. In 1950 Victor Chemical Works began underground development work in the area of Maiden Rock, south of Butte, Mont.: and has since mined there. Monsanto Chemical Co. began open pit mining near Soda Springs, Idaho, in 1951.

The authors of this paper are to be commended for a clear exposition of a timely subject. However, some important conclusions, in addition to those presented in the paper, can be drawn from the results of their elaborate and rather complete numerical computations. First of all, the major part of the calculations presented in the paper are for semi-infinite slabs of oil shale (the authors designate this as Model I) and a question must be posed — Are these elaborate computations needed to arrive at realistic estimates of the shale oil displaced. Consider the model of Lauwerier* that corresponds to the authors Model I if thermal conduction parallel to the fracture be neglected. If one also neglects the finite (but relatively small) heat capacity of the material in the fracture, it is easily shown from Lauwerier's solution that the cumulative oil production would be:

AMONG the recent mining and metallurgical developments in England great interest has been shown in the development of an iron-ore field covering 26,0.00 acres in Northamptonshire, containing 500,¬000,000 long tons of ore; and the erection at Corby, by Stewarts & Lloyds, of a modern basic bessemer steel plant and tube works. The entire project was planned to cost about £3,300,000. Many improvements have been made in the varied equipment that is being installed, some of which has set mew records for massiveness. There is, for instance, a new roll crusher, which has been manufactured by Hadfields, Limited, of Sheffield, the largest ever built in England, and weighing 130 tons. This machine, shown in Fig. 1, as erected at the Hadfields shops, is primarily designed to take blocks of iron ore as they come from the steam shovel. The maximum size is 54 by 48 by 36 in., hut occasional pieces slightly larger than this may be accommodated. The capacity is upwards of 500 tons per hour, the product passing to a secon-

Free energies, heats, and entropies of mixing of solid Fe-Au alloys have been measured by the galvanic cell method between 800° and 900°C. A positive deviation from Raoult's law and a large excess entropy of mixing were observed, both attributable to lattice distortion caused by the disparity in component atom sizes. Since the terminal solid solutortiontions are not regular, thermodynamic properties computed from the location of the mis-cibility gap do not agree well with measured quantities. The electromotive force data suggest some changes in the existing Fe-Au phase diagram. ALTHOUGH a considerable amount of information has been accumulated about the thermodynamic properties of metal solid solutions which exhibit negative deviation from Raoult's law, particularly those in which ordering occurs, relatively few experimental measurements have been made on solutions with positive deviation. This is due to the infrequency of broad homogeneous regions suitable for experimental measurement in solutions of this type, since any marked positive deviations from ideality lead to restricted solubility and the formation of miscibility gaps. Thermodynamic data reported in the literature for such systems have usually been calculated from the location of the miscibility gap boundaries under the assumption that the entropies of mixing are ideal, i.e., the terminal solutions are regular.' One of the few binary systems with both positive deviation and a wide homogeneous range in the solid is the Ni-Au system. A recent investigation of solid Ni-Au alloys' revealed that the entropies of mixing were much larger than ideal and consequently thermal data computed from the phase boundaries assuming regular solutions were seriously in error. Theoretical considerations put forward by Zener indicated that high entropy values should generally be associated with systems possessing a miscibility gap in the solid, when this is due to differences in the size of component atoms. These facts suggest that the regular solution assumption is a poor approximation for many solid solutions with positive deviation and that reliable thermodynamic data generally cannot be obtained by conventional methods from the location of miscibility gap boundaries. The Fe-Au system, Fig. 1, resembles the Ni-Au system in certain respects. The presence of a miscibility gap in the solid indicates a large positive deviation from ideality, but there is nevertheless an extensive single phase region suitable for experimental measurement. The following investigation of solid Fe-Au alloys was carried out in order to obtain additional data on the thermodynamic properties of metal solid solutions with positive deviation from Raoult's law and to further compare thermodynamic data computed from miscibility gap boundaries with those measured experimentally. Experimental Method The thermodynamic properties were derived from measurements of the potential developed between pure solid iron and Fe-Au alloys in a high temperature galvanic cell. The experimental apparatus and technique were the same as those used for the Ni-Au alloys and described in a previous report.' Cell electrodes were 1/16 in. diam rods swaged from chill-cast ingots and annealed for one week at 850°C. Nature has furnished us with fuel in three forms, solid, liquid, and gaseous; solid, the most common; liquid, containing the greatest energy; gaseous, the most convenient for use. The tendency of the day is to the conversion of solid and liquid fuel into the gaseous form. There is magic in the word gas to many men who through ignorance or indifference imagine that by mere conversion into gas an immense quantity of energy can he added to fuel of other forms, forgetful of the law of nature, that. the conversion of any substance from one form to another involves a loss of effective energy, and therefore that if in certain cases more duty can be obtained out of the gas resulting from a given amount of coal than the coal itself will supply when used direct, the cause lies solely in the more efficient utilization of the fuel in its gaseous state. Nevertheless, new processes for making gas are constantly crowded upon our notice with claims of less cost for manufacture and delivery than natural gas, and often of far more energy for the product than is contained in the coal or oil from which it is made. I was recently asked to examine a new process of this kind. From an analysis shown me the calorific energy of the gas approximated 375 heat-units per cubic foot; on ascertaining the quantity of gas claimed to be made from a given amount of solid and liquid fuel, it appeared, that for every 325 heat-units contained in the latter 900 heat-units were alleged to he delivered into the gas, or nearly three times as much energy as the original fuel really held. The extravagant claim of some oil-gas advocates is still frequently heard, that by vaporizing oil with steam and then passing the mixture through a coil of hot iron pipe, an oil-water-gas containing 26,600 heat-units is formed from 1 pound of oil carrying originally 21,000 heat-units, while the only energy expended on the gas has been by the introduction of a -little steam and a little extraneous heat. DURING an investigation in which the solubility relations of the phases in Muntz metal (60 per cent. copper, 40 per cent. zinc) were under study, certain phenomena that had no immediate connection with the main problem were observed, which were thought sufficiently interesting to study further. Because of lack of time, only a preliminary survey was made of two of these; namely, the cleavage structure developed under certain conditions in a 60:40 brass and abnormal grain growth in this alloy. CLEAVAGE STRUCTURE IN HEAT-TREATED MUNTZ METAL Carpenter noted many years ago that cold-working a brass of the Muntz metal type, which had been quenched previously from within the beta field, results in a partial breakdown of the supersaturated beta solution and the precipitation of the solute (the alpha solution) in the cleavage planes of the beta grains. This manner of rejection of a solute from a metastable solid solution is not peculiar to this particular alloy, for among others, it occurs in the cold-working of certain austenitic steels; for example, the austenitic nickel steels. In these ferrous alloys, cold deformation produces a partial decomposition of the austenite, with the formation of martensitic "needles" and zigzags in the austenitic poly-hedra. It is interesting to note that while the two solid solutions-austenite and quenched Muntz metal- are metastable and in their mode of decomposition behave quite alike when deformed in the cold, the metastability of each results from a different cause; viz., that of the austenite from the fact that it is a supercooled solution (its solvent, gamma iron, at ordinary temperatures is below its normal stable range) whereas the metastability of the quenched Muntz metal is the result of supersaturation.

This paper describes the unusual hazardous conditions encountered in mining thick, inclined coal beds under heavy cover in Carbon County, Utah. This description includes heavy roof conditions, sloughing ribs, steep pitches, and severe bouncing experience. Emphasis is placed on the top bench system of mining and development in the top half of a 16-ft seam, under the roof rock, which is bolted, and the recovery of the bottom coal on retreat; success of bolted roof and ribs; and shuttle car haulage on pitches up to 25%. The use of protective cages for operators of face equipment, the guarding of belt conveyor systems to prevent injury associated with deliberate entry, and the positive lockout of electrical equipment is described and illustrated. Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that in- fluence mining. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined conditions are met in the coal mines of the Columbia-Geneva Steel Div. of the United States Steel Corp., in southeastern Utah. This coal bed measures up to 16 ft in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 3000 ft. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colo. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest. It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development. Engineers are frequently faced with the problem of having to predict oil recovery from a solution gas drive reservoir in the early life of a field. This is often the time when actual laboratory or field-derived gas-oil permeability (kg/k0) data are not yet available. Although excellent collections of k0/k0 data for various types of rocks may be found in the literature,1,2,3 a need exists for a more detailed correlation of k0/k0 data with core properties such as porosity, permeability, clay content or pore-size distribution. It is the purpose of this article to present this type of correlation for sandstone material. The correlation is based on laboratory tests performed on over 300 core samples from 19 reservoirs in the United States and Canada. EXPERIMENTAL Cores were analyzed by routine procedures, using samples of conventional size (7/8-in. diameter, 7/8-in long) cut parallel to the bedding planes. Air permeability was measured at 1.67 atm mean pressure in a Hassler-type apparatus. Porosity was determined with the aid of a Ruska bulk volume meter and a Boyle's Law rock volume meter, An evaporation method' was used to evaluate irreducible water saturations. Core samples were saturated with 25,000 ppm NaCl brine. The brine was reduced to the irreducible saturation, and the remainder of the pore space was filled with kerosene. This was followed by multiphase flow tests using the so-called "dispersed feed" technique.5 n this technique, gas and oil (kerosene and kerosene-saturated air) were dispersed with the aid of a porous Alun-durn feed head, the face of which contained a waffle-shaped system of Lucite-lined grooves. Oil entered the back side of the feed head and emerged at the raised areas of the front face. Gas was introduced directly into the system of grooves at the front face. The gas-oil mixture then entered the test core which was kept in capillary contact with the feed head. Permeabilities were determined from rate and pressure measurements and saturations from weights. All determinations were performed at equilibrium or steady-state conditions. Pore-size distributions were determined on selected samples by a mercury injection technique.6 GENERAL CORRELATIVE TRENDS When examining data from a given reservoir, it was noted that k0/k0 vs saturation curves became generally less steep as specific air permeability increased, a development that has a favorable effect on oil displacement efficiency by solution gas drive. This trend has also been reported by others in the literature.' An effect of porosity on k0/k0 data was also noted. This effect was not generally discernible in a study of relative permeability data for a given reservoir but became apparent when data for sandstone reservoirs of similar lithology but differing average porosity were compared. For instance, in a comparison of argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstones from 11 reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 14 to 28 per cent, a definite trend was noted, indicating that for a given permeability k0/k0 curves became less favorable (i.e., steeper) as porosity increased. A similar trend was observed for a group of comparatively clean sandstones from five reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 15 to 21 per cent. For a given permeability and porosity, comparatively clean sandstones gave more favorable k0/k0 curves than argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstone or chert reservoirs. The laboratory studies also showed that least favorable k0/k0 curves were exhibited by shaly sandstone, conglomerate, and sandstone containing carbon inclusions. WHAT is a die-casting and what is the die-casting industry? From the literal translation of the words "die" and "casting"' one concludes that a die-casting is a casting made in a die. The casting may be of any metal or alloy or, for that matter, may be of some nonmetallic material capable of being cast, such as plaster of paris or glass. The die may be of any material that will take successive casts so it need not necessarily be metallic in nature. The term "die-casting," therefore, is indeed broad, though in practical usage it has come to mean the casting of metals and their alloys in metallic molds or dies. Even this limitation of the term leaves -a broad field, for castings may be made in a number of different ways. For example, the molten metal may be allowed to run into the die by gravity it may be sucked into the cavity of the die, it may be forced to take the contour of the cavity in the die by centrifiugal force, or it may be forced into the cavity under hydrostatic pressure. THE Spanish mine is in Nevada County, California, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City by road, and 3 miles north of the town of Washington. The mill and surface buildings are on Poorman's Creek at an ele¬vation of 3,000 ft. About 35 men are employed at the property, which is producing 50 tons of ore per day. Electric power, purchased from the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., is brought in from Alleghany, seven miles away. In the early days the mine was operated by F. W. and P. R. Bradley. Between 1883 and 1899 the production was approximately $900,0)0 in gold. The ore treated during; that time yielded an average of 60 cents per ton and was mined and milled at a profit. The surface, oxidized, ore deposit was 30 to 100 ft. wide and was mined by the glory-hole method. The milling-plant at first consisted of a Blake crusher an-1 a small Huntington mill; later three large Huntington mills were added to the plant. In 1893 a new mill was built at a lower adit- It consisted of 10 stamps and four Huntington mills. The gold was secured by amalgamation, the recovery being about 50 per rent.

The New Jersey Zinc Co. successfully holed through a 2 1/2-mile haulage tunnel connecting its new Ivanhoe shaft with the Van Mater Shaft at Austinville, Va. This 8x 10-ft cross-section tunnel was driven from both ends and met at a point approximately a mile from one shaft and a mile and a half from the other. In order to make certain that the faces met accurately on line and grade it was necessary to refine conventional mine surveying practices. The mines that are serviced by these shafts are located in the southwestern part of Virginia approximately midway between Roanoke and Bristol at the west foot of the Blue Ridge. While the presence of lead-zinc sulfide ores has been known in this area for more than 200 years, it was in 1902 that New Jersey Zinc Co. acquired the Austinville property, which has been in constant operation since that time. About ten years ago the company undertook an extensive diamond drilling program at Ivanhoe several miles to the southwest. This program was successful in locating sufficient ore to justify the purchase of a number of the properties in this area and plans were made to develop the new orebodies. The discovery of this ore as well as substantial addi- tional reserves at Austinville resulted in a decision by the company to increase its daily milling capacity to 3000 tons, of which about 1000 tons would be supplied from the Ivanhoe mine. After careful consideration of all possible methods of transporting this volume of ore from Ivanhoe to the mill, it became evident that diesel locomotive haulage through a 2½-mile tunnel between the two mines would best suit prevailing conditions. Since the lowest operating level, known as the 1100 level, of each mine would be at approximately the same elevation, it was obvious that such a tunnel should be driven on this level. Not only would this tunnel facilitate feeding Ivanhoe ore into the underground crusher and skip loading installation at Austinville, but it would also open up a known orebody 5000 ft southwest of the Van Mater shaft. In addition it would provide a valuable diamond drilling base from which a large and a potentially favorable but untested block of ground might be explored. In order to hasten the completion of the tunnel, it was felt that it should be driven from both ends. ENGINEERING CONTROL PROCEDURES It was vital that the tunnel junction be made accurately on line and grade; thus it was felt that engineering control of an unusually high degree of reliability was required to prevent an accumulation

Beyer Barometric Condenser The Ingersoll-Rand Co. is now offering to the trade complete steam­condensing plants for all service conditions. This equipment includes the Beyer barometric condenser, for' which the company has secured the patent rights, Imperial duplex and Ingersoll-Rogler straight-line reciprocating dry vacuum pumps and, where required, Cameron simplex and centrifugal pumps. The Beyer barometric condenser is of the counter-current type, in which air and cooling water flow in opposite directions. The steam inlet is at the bottom of the condensing v el, the water inlet above and the air-removal opening at the top. The sheets of cooling water over owing the pool at the inlet point meet the entering steam. The two are brought into intimate contact by conical baffle plates which assist the water to absorb to its full capacity the latent heat of the steam. The non-condensable air liberated in the condensing action rises through the falling water to the removal point at the top, being cooled to practically the temperature of the incoming water. I. SITUATION AND SURROUNDINGS. THE Promontorio mine is situated at the northern end of the Sierra San Francisco de Coneto, in the town of Promontorio, Partido of El Oro, State of Durango, Mexico. As shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, the nearest railroad station is Chinacates on the Mexican International Railroad, 82 miles north of the city of Durango. The mine is 16 miles north of the station by air-line. It is reached by means of a good wagon-road which first crosses the Guatimapé Plain, passing the ranches of San Antonio and San Julian, to Estacion-a distance of about 15.5 miles-and then entering the mountains crosses the Sierra to Promontorio-a further distance of 11.5 miles¬making in all a distance of 27 miles by road from railroad to mine. Promontorio is just beyond the summit of the range, at an elevation of about 8,000 ft. above sea-level, or 1,350 ft. above the Chinacates station. The Castillo de San Francisco, the highest peak in the Sierra, has an altitude of 10,000 ft., and the Promontorio road crosses the summit of the ridge at an elevation of 9,000 ft. by a pass just below this peak known as the Puerto del Almagre. The Promontorio mill is situated at Santa Ives, 2 miles by tram or 3 miles by wagon-road to the north of Promontorio and about 600 ft. lower. The Sierra San Francisco de Coneto decreases in height towards the north and west till it comes to an end at the Melchor Arroyo on the ranches of Melchor and Ramos. Beyond this arroyo another range, the Sierra de la Candela, begins. The unit agreement for the Wertz Dome field, Wyoming, was approved by the Acting Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior on November 4, 1937, effective on December 1, 1937. The stated objectives of the agreement are to conserve and put to beneficial use all oil and gas produced; to make possible a uniform withdrawal of oil and gas in order to maintain equalized reservoir pressures; to provide for an orderly determination of the structural features of the productive horizons; and to permit the injection of gas for pressure maintenance. The purpose of this paper is to show by a discussion of the problems involved and the engineering practices employed by the unit operator, how well the objectives of the unit agreement have been accomplished in the development and production of oil and gas from the field. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT The Wertz Dome oil and gas field is located 88 miles southwest of Casper and 38 miles north and westerly from Rawlins, Wyoming. It is served by a state secondary oiled road connecting with U. S. Highway No. 220 at Lamont, a distance of 3 miles from the field. It has been a producing field for 27 years, first as an important producer of gas and more recently of oil. The Producers and Refiners Corp. completed Well No. 1, NE1/4SW1/4 sec. 7, T. 26 N., R. 89 W., the first productive well in the field, in September. 1921, in the Muddy sandstone of Upper Cretaceous age, at a depth of 3435 feet for an initial production of 42,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day. In 1922 pipe lines were laid to Casper, Wyoming, for supplying fuel to the Standard of Indiana refinery, 'the adjoining town of Mills. and the Producers and Refiners Corp. pump station No. 6 in Mills; and to Parco (now Sinclair), Wyoming, for supplying that refinery with fuel. The gasoline content of the gas was extracted in an absorption plant located near the town of Mills. No compressors were used as the line pressure was sufficiently high to flow the gas through the absorbers. As high as 30,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day were treated in the plant extracting 6000 gallons of gasoline. In September 1937, the pipe line was discontinued and the plant was dismantled at which time 61,000,000,000 cu. ft. of gas had been produced from the seven Muddy, Cloverly, and Sundance gas wells drilled in the field. Of this volume of gas 800,000,000 cu. ft. were produced from the Frontier formation, 34,200,000,000 cu. ft. from the Muddy sandstone, 24,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Cloverly, locally called Dakota, and 2,000,000,000 cu. ft. from the Sundance formation. The pipe line was discontinued because of the near depletion of the gas reserves in Wertz and nearby fields, and hecause of the local field requirements demanding the retention of the remaining gas reserves. In December 1936, the Sinclair Wyoming Oil Co. completed Well No. 10, SE1/4NW1/4 sec. 7. T. 26 N., R. 89 W., at a depth of 5886 feet. as the first Tensleep sand producer with an intial of 1700 barrels of oil per day. The well was originally drilled only 14 feet into the sand and in August 1939 was deepened to a depth of 6161 feet, 289 feet in the sand, and the daily produe tion increased to 8350 barrels of oil. In February 1948 Well No. 22, SE1/4 SE1/4 sec. 1. T. 26 N., R. 90 W., was deepened from the Tensleep to the Basal Amsden sand and completed at a depth of 6635 feet for an intial of 600 barrels of oil per day in the Basal Amsden. In April 1948, Well No. 2. SW1/4 NE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N., R. 90 W.. was deepened from the Tensleep to the Madison limestone and was completed at a depth of 7193 feet for an intial of 1145 barrels of oil per day in the Madison. Well No. 26, SE1/4SE1/4 sec. 1, T. 26 N.. R. 90 W., was deepened from the Ten-sleep to the Cambrian and in October 1948 it was completed in the Cambrian for an intial of 277 barrels of oil per day. GEOLOGY AND PRODUCTIVE ACREAGE The surface is Steele shale of Upper Cretaceous age, covered in part by gravel beds.
