Geotechnical models developed during the planning stages of open pit mines are three-dimensional so as to capture the spatial variation in lithological, structural, hydrogeological, and geomechanical conditions. Geological models that describe the lithological and structural (faulting and folding) characteristics of a deposit are always 3D. Likewise, boreholes and piezometers used to develop geomechanical properties and groundwater models are drilled at spatial offsets across the deposit to understand the lateral and vertical characteristics. Yet when geotechnical analysis is completed, often the three-dimensional geological, hydrogeological, and structural models as well as geometrically complex 3D mine designs for optimizing economic mineral recovery and overburden removal are simplified to two-dimensional sections. In this paper we demonstrate that this simplification can lead to the wrong failure mechanism being identified, analysed, and/or a conservative factor of safety being calculated and hence an over-estimation of slope stability. Through case studies we show how three-dimensional analysis methods are more suited to rock slopes, particularly those with anisotropic material strength, when singularities such as geological faults are present, and nonlinear slope geometry. When the same slopes are analysed in two dimensions, the failure mechanism calculated is often fundamentally incorrect. The case studies further reveal that the factor of safety calculated in three dimensions is not always higher than the two-dimensional factor of safety.

[SECRETARY'S NOTE.-As a result of this discussion, an expression of opinion covering all points of unanimous agreement was adopted and signed by members of the Institute party as individuals. This statement, which was printed in the Bulletin of December, 1910, is reprinted below, as an introduction to ,the detailed report of the discussion. It should be clearly understood that it does not constitute an official declaration by the Institute, the rules of which forbid any such action. At the New Haven meeting of February, 1909, a free discussion of the plan of the canal took place, in which the critics of the present scheme had full opportunity to state their views. That discussion was continued at considerable length in the newspapers ; but the Institute was never committed to either side. In this latter instance, the situation is precisely similar. Certain members and guests of the Institute, having had the advantage of later developments and of personal inspection, have expressed the conclusions at which they have arrived on their own responsibility ; and these conclusions are published by the Institute, subject to further discussion, like any other part of its proceedings. The general statement referred to contained a promise that the full discussion, of which it was a result, would be subsequently printed ; and this promise is fulfilled, so far as practicable, in the subjoined report, concerning which I beg to offer the following explanations: 1. It is made up of the remarks of the members of our party, as subsequently written out and mailed to the Secretary. 2. In editing these contributions, I have condensed the material considerably by cutting out much repetition of opinions and phrases ; and in such excision, I, frankly confess, the authors whose communications were delayed, have been the sufferers. Nevertheless, there is a good deal of repetition left, as there must be, when so many persons had talked so much, and come to agreement upon so many points. 3. "Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Using a scientific-principled definition of global socio-ecological sustainability can be a useful basis for planning precious and base metal mining projects. The mining industry faces key challenges of; viability of the minerals industry; the control, use and management of land; national and local socio-economic development; environmental management; materials stewardship; and access to information. Using a framework for strategic sustainable development to assess the current reality of mine project development has resulted in identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement between current best practices and a desired vision of sustainability constrained by science based principles. These gaps indicate opportunities to strengthen current strategies, tools, and actions with a deeper understanding of socio-ecologic systems and a first-order, principled definition of sustainability, enabling success in moving towards achieving a sustainable society, ie sustainability. Evaluation of mine project development and their impacts on ecological and social systems using a systems perspective which recognises the underlying principles of operation, delays, feedback loops and response to change highlight specific opportunities to create value for social, economic and ecologic systems. Envisioning this future for mining projects within a sustainable society can be done by evaluating their development and operations guided by the sustainability principles. Performance indicators play a key role in measuring progress towards achieving sustainability goals yet it is necessary to consider whether indicators capture the whole systems perspective. Connected to this broader view, indicators can contribute much value to the mining industryÆs sustainability journey. This paper examines how current processes for mining projects can be developed using a whole systems perspective and measured using holistically designed performance indicators.

"Silicosis was first reported by the ancient Greeks and is apparently as old as human history. The prevalence of this illness peaked in the last half of the 19th century and the early part of this century, when mechanized industry was developing and the relationship between dust exposure and disease was less well understood. Yet, even today in devel-oped countries, sporadic outbreaks of silicosis occur when workers are consistently exposed to silica particles of respir-able size (0.5 to 5.0 µm in diameter) at levels exceeding those recognized to be safe.Silicon dioxide or silica. is the earth's most abundant mineral. Silica is considered to be either free (i.e.. unbound to other minerals) or combined. Minerals with high amounts of free silica include quartz (including granite) flint. Chert, opal, chalcedony, and diatomite. Combined forms of silica are called silicates and include, among others, asbestos talc and kaolin.In the crystalline form, silica exists as quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite (Fig. 28). Of these quartz is ubiquitous in the environment and occurs as sand and as a part of many rocks. Cristobalite and tridymite occur naturally in lava and can be formed by the heating of quartz or amorphous silica. Cristo-balite is more tibrogenic than quartz. Amorphous silica is noncrystalline and, therefore, is relatively nontoxic and does not cause silicosis. It occurs as diatomite (skeletons of pre-historic marine organisms) or as vitreous silica (glass), the result of carefully melting and then quickly cooling free crystalline silica. Heating diatomite with or without alkali (a process known as calcining), forms cristobalite and adds the respiratory toxicity of free crystalline silica.There are many opportunities for occupational exposure to respirable crystalline free silica. Some of the commonly en-countered occupations in which the risk of silicosis exists are reported in Table 20.Silicosis. the pulmonary disease caused by the inhalation of silica particles of respirable size, is most commonly cate-gorized by findings on the chest radiograph. The most typical presentations simple silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis appear different radiologically but are grouped under the category of classic silicosis because they are a part of the radiographic spectrum of this illness. Radiographically, simple silicosis appears as small (less than 10 mm in diameter), rounded opacities, typically predominant in the upper lung zones. Progressive massive fibrosis is the result of the coalescence of these small nodular opacities and appears as larger opacities (more than 10 mm in diameter), again typicallydistributed in the upper lung zones."

The majority of the tailings dam operations in South Africa will be required to comply with the new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) within the next one to three years, depending on the dam classification and the requirements of the respective investors and insurers. With up to 72 auditable requirements, the implementation of the Standard needs careful planning and prioritization. This paper focuses on the practical steps to GISTM compliance for tailings facilities in operation in South Africa. The discussions are based on current practices, South African regulations, and industry standards requirements. The possible changes in dam classifications and the associated requirements are presented.

The Bureau of Mines investigated lode tin deposits on Potato Mountain, Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Tin was found to occur as cassiterite associated with quartz, tourmaline, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and earthy clays, but the deposits lack the varied accessory minerals commonly found in tin districts. The tin-bearing deposits are in metasediments along minor breaks and bedding planes but not in the crushed earthy filling of major faults. Cassiterite and sulfides occur with quartz in veins, both with and without earthy clays, and disseminated through tourmalinized wall rocks. The deposits are characterized by irregular segregations containing 1 to 10 percent tin within zones averaging not over 0.25 percent tin. The largest segregation exposed is on the summit of a low hill on the east-central slopes of Little Potato Mountain; most of the outcroppings are in an area trending east to west, roughly 10 to 30 feet wide and 300 feet long. Sample values ranged as high as 12 percent tin, but the average grade may be about 1 percent tin. The extreme irregularity of both grade and composition precludes a more exact determination. Similar concentrations are scattered for over 1,000 feet to the west and north, but these are smaller and lower in grade. Elsewhere on Potato Mountain, generally similar deposits occur as clusters of veinlets at widely separated points in the metasedimentary walls of major faults.

Pressure tunnels are constructed nurously in related with powerhouse. In some cases, according to high internal water pressure, rock mass around tunnel can seldom suffer this pressure. So installation of concrete lining which interacts with rock mass and suffers parts of this pressure and transfers the rest of the pressure to the rock. In this paper hydromechanical interaction between rock and lining is investigated. With using empirical and numerical methods concrete lining for Symareh waterway is designed. Initial support of 10 cm reinforced shotcret with wire mesh and rock bolts pattern of 2.5*2.5 m with length of 4 m is suggested. By using FLAC package final lining with paying attention to axial force and momentum in reinforced concrete was designed. Reinforced concrete with 60 cm thickness and two rows of bars, 18 mm diameter and 20 cm spacing are designed. Also for preventing cracks in concrete which caused by the change of temperature and shrinkage, bars with 10 mm diameter and 25 cm spacing, and also bars with 8 mm diameter and 10 cm as minimum shear bars are suggested. L'installation d'une couche de béton a l'intérieur de la galerie donc réagit avec les roches et support d'une partie de cette pression et transfère le reste de la pression aux roches. Dans ce papier, l'interaction hydromécanique entre la roche et la couche en béton a été étudiée. En se basant sur les méthodes empiriques et numériques le système de support de galerie de passage d'eau de Saymareh a été conçu. Un soutènement initial d'une épaisseur de 10 cm de béton étant renforcé par un grill métallique et une maille de boulon (2.5 * 2.5 m) d'une longueur de 4 m a été proposé. En utilisant le logiciel de FlAC, la couche finale en béton selon les forces dans le béton a été conçue. Le béton renforcé d'une épaisseur de 60 cm et deux ranges d'armateurs (18 mm de diamètre) avec un intervalle de 20 cm a été conçu. De plus; pour éviter des fissures dans le béton suite au changement de la température et de l'extraction, des armateurs de 10 mm de diamètre et de 25 cm d'intervalle pour augmenter la résistance au sciesiement du béton ont été proposes Unter Druck stehende Tunnels werden hauptsaechlich im Zusammenhang mit Kraftwerken gebaut. In einigen Faellen, wo der Wasserdruck zu hoch ist, Kann selten die Felsenmasse diesen hoehen Druck allein aufnehwen. Deshalb werden sie mit Betonauskleidung versehen, die wegen guter Wechelwirkung mit der Felsenmasse einen Hauptanteil des Druckes aufnehmen Kann, wobei der Rest an die Felsenmesse weitergeleitet wird. In dieser Arbeit wird die hydromechanische Wechelwirkung zwischen der Gesteinmasse und der Auskleidung untersucht. Mit Hilfe empirischen und numerischen Verfahren sowie Kombination der beiden wurde eine Betonauskleidung fuer die Symareh Wasser Kannal koustruiert. Als erstes wurde ein 10Cm dicker armierter Beton mit einem Mashengitter von 2.5*2.5 sowie den gleichen Felsbolzenabstaenden und einer Laenge von 4 m vorgeschlagen. Mit Hilfe des FLAC Programms wurde die Hauptauskleidung unter Beruecksichtigung von Axialkraeften und Momenten im Stahlbeton koustruiert. Der 60 Cm dicke Stahlbeton wurde mit zwei Reihen von Stangen, 8 mm im Durchmesser und in Abstaenden von 20 Cm koustruiert. Ferner im Sinne der Vorbeugung gegen Rissen im Beton, die durch Temperatur aendeungen und Schrumpfungen bedingt sind, wurden Stangen mit 10 mm Durchmesser und 2.5 Cm Abstaenden zur Erhoehung vor Scherfestigkeit des Betons vorgeschlagen.

Known resources of nickel laterites considerably exceed nickel sulfide resources and there is a growing consensus that most new nickel production will be sourced from laterites. The development of nickel laterite projects is very capital intensive due to inherently low grades, inability to concentrate ore prior to processing, complex processing technology and typically large infrastructure requirements. This has resulted in most recently proposed projects being "mega-projects," to achieve economics of scale. However, this may result in unacceptable project risk in many cases. Furthermore, many known laterite resources are not large enough to support a mega-project. This paper describes an alternative model for nickel laterite project development that allows, smaller scale and reduces capital exposure. The final report is made up of eight dust-control technique reports, each discussing, details of the individual mine surveys.

Much has been said and written about the world's, and particularly the united states of America's, energy crisis. The relative changes between cost components of production have altered because the days of cheap energy have now gone. Decisions that made capital investment reduction attractive to treat large tonnage lower grade ore bodies appear to be no longer valid because average energy costs for comminution that were less than 1 cent per kilowatt hour in 1972, are now more than 3 cents and will shortly become 6 cents according to some projections. Increased capital investment to improve processing energy efficiencies are certainly going to be pursued. Energy today is the largest cost component in the average mineral production facility. It takes more than 12000 kilowatt hours to produce one ton of finished steel and more than 60000 kilowatt hours for each ton of copper and aluminum.

Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

The separation and purification of uranium from either nitric acid or hydrochloric acid media tan be accomplished by using either solvent extraction or ion-exchange. Over the past two years at Los Alamos, emerging programs are focused on recapturing the expertise required to do limited, small-quantity processing of enriched uranium. During this period of time, we have been investigating ion-exchange as a method for extraction/purification of uranium from acidic media. In addition, waste stream polishing is associated with this effort in order to achieve more complete removal of the uranium prior to recycle of the acid. Extraction chromatography has been demonstrated' to further polish the uranium from both nitric and hydrochloric acid media thus allowing for a more complete recovery of the actinide material and creation of less waste during the processing steps. We will discuss contact experiments for evaluation of eleven different resins for uranium removal from nitric acid, the evaluation (again by contact experiments) of uranium elution from the ion-exchange media by various chemicals, and small-scale experiments for the removal of 235U from nitric acid. Larger-scale (100-gram) flow experiments using depleted uranium, were done after the small-scale evaluation Of the selected resin. A discussion is also included concerning the shortcomings of the contact experiments and how the flow experiments were modified in order to overcome these problems. We will also discuss the application of ion-exchange for some specific process needs at Los Alamos Contact experiments were used to evaluate some commercially available solvent-impregnated resins in addition to evaluation of several resins of this type synthesized in our laboratory. These experiments' involved both nitric and hydrochloric acid media. The data from these experiments will be used to determine the column size and' amount of resin required to polish the waste stream produced by the ion-exchange process described above. Small-scale flow experiments will be described and data given on the mass balances achieved using this two step process. Future work for evaluation of new ion-exchange and solvent-impregnated resins as well as the search for new eluants will be discussed. Other future experiments for both processes, including large-scale experiments, will be discussed in detail.

Against the receding background of the October stock market crash and the December overhang of inventories, the economy began with a shaky start in 1988. As 1988 began, the Administration's estimate of real growth for 1988 had just been reduced from 3.5% to 2.4% and economists and other ob-servers were concerned that the expansion that was 5 years old might be near the end and that a recession might be around the corner. The ensuing moderately strong economic activity, however, belied all the negative signals that were evident earlier, and the real GNP continued to grow at an estimated 2.3% annual rate during the first quarter of 1988, extending the ongoing recovery into the sixth year (table 1.). The relatively accommodative policy of the Federal Reserve Board (the discount rate was cut by 0.25% in January), a strong performance by the export sector, and the revival of consumer spending were major forces underlying the economic strength. But as the quarter drew to a close, signs of tight capacity utilizations were apparent in many of the export and capital goods sectors, including textile, chemical, plastic, metal, and machinery. Employment was at a record high level while the unemployment rate was close to a historical low. Prices were rising at a faster pace than those of 1987, and the dollar resumed its slide after a brief recovery in January and February. These factors gave rise to the fears of higher inflation. Long-term interest rates increased, casting a pall over the prospect of a robust growth for the rest of the year.

"INTRODUCTION Many ore deposits were discovered in the Wallapai Mining District, which covers the Cerbat Range in Mohave County, Ariz., during the early period of mining there from about 1865 to the 1890's. A considerable amount of production was obtained from shallow lead carbonate ores that carried considerable gold and silver.Mining was revived in 1906 and again during the First World War, and soma of the mines were deepened into the underlying sulfide zone. Substantial quantities of metal were recovered from two mines, the Golconda and the Tennessee-Schuylkill, that were, developed to depths of 1,600 and 1,400 feet, respectively. The Golconda is credited with $6,500,000 gross productions. 2/ This mine was not operated after 1917. The Tennessee-Schuylkill is still operating after a yield of about 300,000 tons of ore that averaged 4.33 percent lead and 7.74 percent zinc and contained an appreciable amount of gold and silver.Many of the old mines were reopened in 1942 or 1943 under the stimulus of premium prices for lead and zinc. A large proportion of this work was finished with loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. It was believed that a good deal of lead and zinc could be recovered from the mines if a custom mill for concentration of the ores was available locally."

An economic evaluation was made of the Bureau of Mines incinerator residue separation process to update the one published in 1971 to a mid-1.974 cost basis. This evaluation includes a modification of the glass-recovery operation used In the original plant design as well as a unit to bale the ferrous scrap product before shipment. Products from the plant are ferrous metal, aluminum and copper-zinc scrap, and a mixed-color glass cullet. The estimated capital and operating costs for four plant sizes are as follows : [ ] The operating costs do not include credits for recovered metals and glass.

The CANALSIDE commercial development in Buffalo, New York serves to revitalize the former site of the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, adjacent to Lake Erie. The Auditorium was constructed in 1940 and founded on steel H-piles driven to limestone bedrock. After decades of professional sport and entertainment events, the “Aud,” as it was locally known, was closed in 1996. It sat vacant until it was demolished in 2009, at which time plans were made to revitalize the area with shops, restaurants, and a historic replica canal. The only portion of the Aud that was left intact was a subbasement boiler room. The subbasement was renovated in 2014 and has since been used to house water and ice making equipment for the historic replica canals, which boast recreational ice skating in the winter. The subbasement floor was about 10 feet below groundwater and the Lake Erie water level. The floor consisted of an approximately 4-foot-thick layered inverted waffle slab system, with reinforced concrete grade beams and concrete infill between the grade beams. A waterproofing membrane was located near the base of the slab. There were no major seepage issues in the subbasement, so the existing waterproofing membrane was assumed to be intact and performing adequately. A four-story building housing a children’s museum was proposed to be constructed directly above the subbasement. The loads imparted by the new building would exceed the capacity of the existing piles, so it was determined that drilling micropiles through the subbasement floor would be the most practical means of supporting the new building. Drilling through the existing slab and waterproofing system was a concern due to the challenges of controlling water during construction and the importance of maintaining the integrity of the permanent waterproofing system.
