"A heptapeptide library displayed on M13 bacteriophages (phages) was screened to identify peptide sequences able to selectively bind to gold, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, and silica ores, and to evaluate phage potential as bioflotation reagents. Many peptide sequences were isolated through biopanning and differed from known sequences. Adsorption isotherms were determined and a receptor/ligand interaction model was identified and used to compare affinity of peptide sequences toward ores. Some phage sequences have slightly lower affinity to sphalerite than other sulphides. Adsorption was higher on sulphides than on silica. Induction time measurements suggested filamentous M13 phages lower hydrophobicity of the ore surface.RÉSUMÉ Une librairie d’heptapeptides présentés sur des bactériophages M13 (phages) a été criblée afin d’identifier les séquences peptidiques affinitaires à des minerais d’or, de chalcopyrite, de sphalérite, de pyrite et de silice et d’évaluer le potentiel de ces phages en tant que de bio-réactifs de flottation. De nombreuses séquences peptidiques ont été isolées par bio-criblage et différenciées d’autres séquences connues. Des isothermes d’adsorption ont été déterminées et un modèle d’interaction récepteur–ligand a été identifié et utilisé pour comparer l’affinité des séquences peptidiques par rapport aux minerais. El presente texto describe los problemas de deforestación, precios e importaciones de mercurio en la minera artesanal aurífera de Madre de Dios. En ese sentido, a medida que la interconexión de la economia mundial avanza, es más difícil que países en desarrollo aprovechen las fuerzas lucrativas de la demanda global para lograr una sostenibilidad social y ambiental. En consecuencia, los países en desarrollo contienen un peso ambiental desigual en relación con los países desarrollados qie importan materias primas. Como ejemplo de ello, el precio del oro aumentó, así como la minería aurífera informal y no industrial en los países en los países en desarrollo y el mal manejo del mercurio en el uso del oro, repercutió en el medio ambiente y los mismos mineros, al igual que el problema de la deforestación. Por ello, se plantea un programa para enfrentar dchos problemas en la región de Madre de Dios y reducir el aumento de la minería informal.

The Upper Devonian Kettle Point black shale of southern Ontario is poorly exposed. Structural maps pre-pared from the data of numerous wells show that the upper surface of the formation has low regular relief, and that the lower surface reflects domes in the Middle Devonian and also local subsidence of the Devonian rocks due to solution of salt in the Silurian Salina Formation. The appearance of minor amounts. of marcasite, pyrite, and calcite, m that order, as interpreted from the evidence of concretions from the type locality at Kettle Point is thought to have been influenced by a rise m the pH within anaerobic sediments preceding compaction.

"By compiling geological, structural, geophysical, and geochemical information into a 3D geological model, we evaluated the orogenic gold potential in the vicinity of a hidden segment of an important Archean fault zone, the Cadillac-Larder Lake fault (CLLF) in the region of Rouyn-Noranda. The segment of CLLF in the present study is partly covered by Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. Because more than 2000 t Au have been extracted along the CLLF to date, our objective is to evaluate the gold potential at depth along a poorly known segment of this fault. A 3D geological model (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) including the covered segment was built through the compilation and homogenization of available geological data and the construction of 23 cross sections. The geology under the Proterozoic cover was evaluated using geophysical inversions, drill holes (42 in total), and surrounding geology. All available assays were filtered and upscaled to a 250 m × 250 m × 250 m regular cell grid to determine and quantify spatial relationships between geological features and mineralized occurrences using the weights of evidence method. Structural features, such as E-W-trending faults and fault intersections, and certain lithologies with a high primary porosity such as volcanoclastic rocks of the Blake River Group and Timiskaming sedimentary rocks, proved to be very prospective, yielding favourable factors with a weight of evidence index W+ > 0.24. These salient features were then assigned a combination index for ultimately evaluating the orogenic gold potential under the sedimentary cover. The zones resulting in an optimization of exploration targeting were attributed the highest probability, representing ~1% of the initial volume. La compilation des données géologiques, géophysiques, structurales, et géochimiques et leur intégration au sein d’un modèle géologique 3D a permis d’évaluer le potentiel aurifère dans les environs d’une importante zone de faille archéenne sous couverture protérozoïque. Cette méthodologie a été développée en utilisant le cas de la Faille Cadillac-Larder Lake (FCLL) dans la région de Rouyn-Noranda. Puisque plus de 2000 t d’Or ont été extrait à proximité de la FCLL, l’objectifs des travaux est l’évaluation du potentiel aurifère en profondeur de ce segment. Un modèle géologique 3D (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) incluant le segment sous couverture de la FCLL a été construit en utilisant l’ensemble des données géologiques disponibles et 23 coupes géologiques. La géologie du socle archéen sous la couverture protérozoïque a été interprétée avec des inversions géophysiques, des forages (42 au total) et les contacts géologiques exposés. Les teneurs aurifères dans le secteur ont été filtrées et ajusté à une grille régulière de 250 m × 250 m × 250 m afin d’évaluer et de quantifier les relations spatiales existantes entre certaines entités géologiques et les emplacements minéralisés en utilisant la méthode du poids de la preuve. Les failles de direction Est-Ouest, les intersections de failles ainsi que certaines lithologies possédant une porosité primaire importantes comme les certains tuf du Groupe de Blake River et les sédiments du Timiskaming se sont montrés très prospectifs avec des valeurs de W+ > 0.24. Ces entités géologiques ont ensuite été utilisées par le biais d’un indice de combinaison pour évaluer le potentiel en or de type orogénique sous le couvert sédimentaire. Cette méthodologie permet une optimisation des campagnes d’exploration puisque les zones pour lesquelles la probabilité de minéralisations a été évaluée à la plus haute valeur représentent 1% du volume initial."

The floodable volume of longwall gob can be of great importance in developing accurate coal mine operation plans, particularly for mine water management and environmental control strategies. Given the inaccessibility and difficulty in direct measurement of gob characteristics following gob recompression, hydrologic, geomechanical, and spatial data and principles were used to solve for the porosity and height of the residual gob using a mathematical model framework and bulking-based techniques. Based on this approach, gob porosity of Appalachian longwalls appears to be tighter than previously reported, ranging between 4.99 and 14.31%. Residual gob height, as normalized with respect to mine extraction height, ranges between 1.90 and 2.45. A novel, bedding-based bulking approach is ampliative with respect to existing roof caving and bulking fundamentals, as it has greater explanatory value compared with the traditional, lithologic-based bulking application. The efficacy of using the residual gob characteristics determined by the mathematical model and bedding-based bulking is examined using a causal comparative method, whereby time series prediction of historical groundwater rebound is compared with observed mine pool elevation data. Prediction accuracy is significantly improved using a prototype model to calculate void volume of longwall gob, specifically, the dependence of porosity of the gob material upon the longwall width to overburden depth ratio for movement basins of subcritical and critical panel widths. The potential implication of these findings toward hydrologic, geomechanical, and ventilation studies of longwall gob could be significant.

"The wide range of length and time scales found in solidification processes are outlined and discussed. Methods for Direct Microstructure Simulation (DMS) are introduced. Key features in sharp interface and phase field models are presented. Concepts in micro-macro solidification modeling are covered. Basic details of microstructure and segregation models are provided. A description of a recent segregation micro-macro model is presented in detail.IntroductionA solidification process involves the containment of a liquid region, which, due to cooling, transforms over time to form a fully solid product. The development of the solid microstructure and the segregation of solute components during this transformation are controlled by phenomena that occur across a wide range of length and time scales. A ""successful"" model of a given solidification process needs to account for these phenomena. Standard models of solidification employ a discrete grid of node points and associated volume elements in the special domain, with a discrete time step to track the transient changes of nodal values, describing the composition and microstructure. Through the use of such models significant progress has been made towards a complete understanding of solidification process and phenomena (see the conference proceedings in Refs [1-9]). As solidification models become more sophisticated, however, they all run into the problem of resolving the full range of disparate space and time scales.Two approaches can deal with this problem1. Direct Microstructure Simulation (DMS) where the grid size and time step are chosen to scale with the smallest length and time scales of the given problem.2. Micro-macro modeling where the grid size and time step scale with the macroscopic process scale and phenomena at smaller scales are accounted for via sub-grid modeling and volume averaging.Currently full DMS of solidification is beyond the reach of available computer power and the application and development of micro-macro models is an important and critical research area."

In terms of a Research Proposals supported by a Grant Agreement dated 30 June 1973, the author was commissioned to prepare an annotated bibliography of mine fires. The main objective was to conduct a comprehensive program of library research and search of official files to prepare a list of articles dealing with actual occurrences of mine fires. This bibliography as now completed includes an annotated reference from each article or report cited, underlining the cause, extent, methods used, procedural errors made, results achieved, ventilation effects, and lessons learned from the operation of subduing the particular fire.

The Midvale Slag Site covers 300 acres in Midvale, Salt Lake County, Utah. Midvale (population 10,000) is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area (population 936,000). Between 1902 and 1971, United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Co. smelted ores on the site to produce copper, gold, lead, and silver. Figure 1 shows a picture of the historical Midvale smelter operations. [ ] When operations ceased, the site was estimated to contain 2 million tons of slag from these operations. The smelter no longer exists. In 1971, Valley Materials, Inc., acquired the site to process the slag into materials for railroad beds and asphalt highways. During the 1980s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) raised concerns regarding environmental impacts associated with the historical site operations. The Midvale Slag Superfund Site was listed on the NPL in 1991. The Site consists of two Operable Units (OUs): OU1 covering the properties north and adjacent to former ore smelting operations; and OU2 covering the smelter site itself. OU1 had historically been affected by wind blown slag dust and stack emissions occurring on OU2 and the Sharon Steel site further to the south. These emissions resulted in elevated levels of arsenic and lead in the native soils. The EPA issued the final Record of Decision (ROD) for the OU1 Site in 1995. The OU1 ROD required the implementation of institutional controls for the undeveloped portions of OU1 in order to restrict future land use to commercial/industrial purposes unless additional remediation was performed. Hence, the land comprising OU1 was originally considered in the ROD to be suitable for commercial or industrial purposes without the need for remedial action. However, development of OU1 for other land uses, including residential or recreational, would require additional assessment and probable remediation. The OU2 parcel was remediated by EPA to allow future land development, and the Sharon Steel site was remediated by EPA and deleted from the NPL. PROPERTY TRANSACTION AND REDEVELOPMENT In February 2006, a private development company, Mercer Bingham Junction, LLC. (MBJ) purchased 130 acres of the OU1 property for the purpose of performing environmental remediation, and developing mixed residential and commercial real estate. Development of the property was conducted in cooperation with USEPA Region 8 (EPA), the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ) and Midvale City. The guidelines under which residential development could occur were defined by EPA. The 130 acres was to be developed for open space, residential and commercial use as part the Midvale City Bingham Junction development. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the proposed land uses. [ ] In May 2005, MBJ began pre-acquisition due diligence activities to purchase the 130 acres of OU1 north of 7200 South Street, which now comprises the Bingham Junction Development. This included the completion of Phase I and limited Phase II investigations. The Phase II investigations were performed to evaluate arsenic and lead concentrations in the planned residential areas of the site, and to explore the contents of the historic landfill on the property. The historic landfill area was on the far west side of OU1, adjacent to the Jordan River. Soil samples collected during the Phase II investigation showed that the planned residential parcels did not currently meet the criteria established in the Tech Memo and that additional placement of fill or soil excavation would be required for residential development in this area. An evaluation performed by the previous owner of the property, Littleson, Inc., showed similar results.

Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 1 and 2 provide a summary view of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1990 and 1991. Table 3 shows the relative importance of a selected group of minerals produced in Latin America in the world mineral economy.

As tunnel boring machine technology has expanded, so has its range of application. Tunneling machines (TBM's) are tackling tasks today that fifteen years ago were considered "inappropriate". A case in point is incline/decline TBM boring. An incline or decline bore presents peculiar design considerations that differentiate it from a horizontal bore. This paper reviews those design considerations as they apply to TBM's, backup, muck handling and other tunneling subsystems. In addition, several abbreviated case studies are presented. By the review of real life tunneling techniques as well as design considerations, the "appropriateness" of TBM incline/ decline boring today becomes apparent. INCLINE Introduction In contemplating the impact of incline versus horizontal tunnel boring system design, the obvious consideration is gravity. Up-hill boring can be quite different than horizontal boring. Muck, water and machine weight all tend to slide down the incline. In addition, hydraulic and lubrication systems if unaltered, will find their fluids pooled in the lower corners contentedly ignoring such higher elevation items as gears and bearings. It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. On behalf of the members and leaders of the IPMI, we hope you will find value in this new publication.

Hydraulic fluid power systems are advantageous whenever power output must be accurately and safely controlled. The load movers, cylinders, jacks, rotary actuators and hydraulic actuators in these systems can be made to smoothly and accurately start, stop, reverse, hold position or move steadily under heavy and variable loads or torques. Because hydraulic systems are simple, compact, reliable, and low cost compared to other power methods and because they can deliver controlled power anywhere on the machine to which a hose can be routed, they are a pan of almost every type of machine found on a coal mining section. Some of the functions they perform are positioning drill booms, driving drill pots on roof bolters, positioning curter booms, raising, lowering, and swinging conveyors, driving conveyors on continuous miners, raising, lowering, and applying sustained loads to longwall roof supports, and advancing the face conveyor and roof supports in longwall mining operations.

BCR National Laboratory (formerly Bituminous Coal Research, Inc.), under a USBM con­tract (originally with the Department of Energy), monitored the installation and operation of a computer-based belt-monitoring and control system at the Barnes & Tucker Coal Co. Mine No. 20, Ebensburg, PA. The system installed was the National Coal Board's Mine Operating System (MINOS) coal transport monitoring and control system. The program objec­tive was to document (1) the installation requirements for a conveyor control system, (2) the operating experience with the system, and (3) the impact of monitoring and control on mine operation. Analysis of the system operation indicates that monitoring and control did improve belt availability significantly, and reduced downtime associated with belt delays. Economic analysis showed the increased belt availability would potentially result in significant production increase, and, therefore, excellent payback on the initial investment. The system performed satisfactorily, was well accepted by the work force, and did not increase the maintenance workload.

Drill cores from uranium roll-front deposits, hosted in lower Cretaceous strata, were examined from the proposed Dewey Burdock in-situ uranium recovery site in the northern part of the Edgemont uranium district, South Dakota. Uraninite (UO2), coffinite U(SiO4)0.9(OH)0.4, and doloresite (H8V6O16) occur as pore-occluding cements within the Fall River Formation in the Dewey area. In contrast, within the Lakota Formation in the Burdock area, uranium (with very little vanadium) is absorbed onto woody fragments and amorphous carbonaceous material in pressure-solution seams. Both areas have typical uranium roll-front mineralogy with 0.5 wt. % pyrite in the reduced solid phase and no pyrite in the oxidized solid phase. The groundwater at the ore zone is not oxygenated, so the uranium is relatively insoluble. Uranium in solution in ground waters is <10µg/L at Dewey and <22 µg/L at Burdock. Micromineralogic and geochemical data are being used to understand water/rock interactions, uranium distribution and movement, and as input factors for predictive reactive transport models.

"Greenhouse gas emissions—specifically of carbon dioxide—are a concern in Canada, where industrial sectors such as mining are stringently regulated for carbon release. Cumulative emissions are positively related to fuel consumption, which is controlled by several factors. This study investigates one of these factors: the product of vehicle speed and running surface total resistance (TR; sum of rolling resistance and grade resistance). Results show that TR directly affects fuel consumption and emissions—a relationship that is mathematically predictable. Fuel consumption and emissions, which are principally associated with the durability or deterioration of wearing course materials, were analyzed to aid selection of road construction capping material of low rolling resistance. In the oil sands region in the province of Alberta, ground conditions change seasonally. Therefore, the annual fuel consumption for the same wearing course material was also compared. Results demonstrated that haul truck size was a contributing factor, but vehicle speed and TR more strongly influenced fuel consumption and emissions. ¦ KEYWORDS Carbon dioxide, Emissions, Fuel consumption, Grade resistance (GR), Greenhouse gas (GHG), Haul truck, Rolling resistance (RR), Total resistance (TR) RÉSUMÉ Les émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), et particulièrement celles de dioxyde de carbone, sont un problème au Canada, où les secteurs industriels tels que l’exploitation minière sont rigoureusement réglementés pour leurs émissions de carbone. Les émissions cumulées sont indéniablement en lien avec la consommation de carburant, qui est contrôlée par plusieurs facteurs. Cette étude examine l’un de ces facteurs, à savoir le produit de la vitesse du véhicule et de la résistance totale de la surface de roulement (la résistance totale, ou RT, est la somme de la résistance au roulement et de la résistance due aux rampes). Les résultats montrent que la RT affecte directement la consommation de carburant et les émissions, un lien qui est mathématiquement prévisible. Pres-sure on world leaders to quickly reduce their carbon footprint is prevalent, prompting new standards and regulations in various industries, including mining and oil and gas. In 2017, the Government of Alberta implemented a carbon tax. The majority of mining activities in this province are truck-shovel operations, where a large fleet of ultra-class trucks is loaded by shovels. Ultra-class haul trucks, classified as those with a capacity of 218–363 tonnes (t), emit high levels of carbon as they travel to processing entry points and waste dumps as designated by the mine plan and mine dispatcher. Mined ore and waste is typically moved over two 12-hour shifts per day throughout the year."

Amandelbult Mine is currently undertaking a trial to mechanise the mining of the UG2 reef through the introduction of room and pillar mining. As part of the trial, a system of managing the control of the hanging wall has been introduced, based on systems and technology that are proving successful in the nearby coal mining industry. The principal features are the use of a high bond strength, stiff bolting system which can be easily installed to a high standard, and a range of in situ tests and measurements to optimise the level of support installed to control the movement of the hanging wall. The rock bolt system and the measurements and tests described are new to the platinum mining industry. The paper describes these systems and their adaptation and application to hard rock mining. La Mine d’Amandelbult est actuellement dans des essais en vue de mécaniser l’extraction dans la veine UG2 grâce à l’introduction d’une exploitation par chambres et piliers. The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama. Power Co. jointly conducted a first experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala., during the fall and winter of 1946-47. This preliminary experiment showed that it was not difficult to maintain combustion of coal underground, and that coal in place could be completely gasified. It was noted that the high temperature developed by the gasification of coal in place brought about changes in overlying strata that appeared to be favorable to the process. The high temperatures caused the roof rock to become plastic, to expand, and to settle down on the mine floor directly behind the reacting coke face. These results were promising enough to warrant further investigation of the process. It was believed that if this action could be controlled properly with roofs of similar composition, it would tend to force the gas-making fluids underground against the coal faces. Plans for the second experiment were based in part on this favor-able roof action, and the successful operation of the planned initial straightline passages depended on this fact. Gorgas was chosen as the site for the second experiment for the following reasons: A tract of coal land of sufficient size was available and isolated from the main body of coal; the roof rock was similar in composition to that encountered in the first experiment; and the overlying strata were thick enough to eliminate some of the operating difficulties that had been encountered, In addition, power, water, and machine-shop facilities as well as an adequate supply of labor were available in this area, and the friendly cooperation of the Alabama Power Co. further recommended this site for the planned experiment.
