"DEFINITIONDiatomaceous earth consists almost entirely of the silicious remains of minute flowerless aquatic plants known as diatoms. The name diatomaceous earth, therefore, is to be preferred to others such as trade names, inappropriate terms, or names correctly applied to some other product. The following names should, therefore, not be used for diatomaceous earth,-- kieselguhr, infusorial earth, diatomite, celite, moler, bergnehl, English rottenstone, tripoli, tripolite, fossil earth, desmid earth, white peat, tellurine, randanite, ceyssatite, or any trade name.FORMATIONDiatoms live in practically all kinds of water, fresh or salt, hot or cold, still or running and under different conditions of depth and pressure. These minute plants assimilate inorganic salts from their environment and produce skeletons of silica much as mollusks secrete lime and form their Shalls. When the diatoms die they settle to the bottom together with anything else which may be present, such as sand, clay or volcanic ash. The organic matter gradually disappears leaving the silicious skeletons of the diatoms which, with impurities, make up the deposits of diatomaceous earth. These deposits which are still being foamed at the present time and which were produced throughout very different epochs, were more prolifically formed in the Tertiary, so that the thickest beds so far discovered are of that Age."

This report presents a detailed study of low temperature, entrained-bed carbonization of an Australian coking coal. The coal studied was high-volatile B bituminous from the Foybrook mine, an open-cut operation in the Liddell seam, New South Wales, Australia. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, continuous vertical reactor at several temperatures from 960° to 1,300° F. It was demonstrated that this bituminous coal can be carbonized within this temperature range to produce tar and a nonagglomerated char, without prior oxidation or char recirculation. Carbonization rates from 138 to 287 lb/hr (as-carbonized basis) were investigated. It was found that the carbonization temperature and the air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values to insure continuous operation. At the higher air-to-coal ratios employed, all or most of the carbonization heat was provided by internal combustion with air in the reactor. At the lower air-to-coa1 ratios, part of the heat for carbonization was supplied externally. On the moisture-and ash-free basis, the yield of tar plus light oil ranged from about 26 to 44 gallons per ton, and the char yield ranged from approximately 1,160 to 1,370 pounds per ton. The heat in the gas ranged from about 900 to 3,000 Btu/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal. Carbonization product yields correlated well with air-to-coal ratio and carbonization temperatures. The volatile matter in the char was found to be temperature dependent. At 1,300° F carbonization, the volatile matter in the char was 8.7 percent (dry basis), whereas at 9600 F carbonization, the residual volatile matter was about 16 to 18 percent (dry basis).

"INTRODUCTION The property was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of lanes in December 1942 and was later investigated by the sane engineer in January and February 1943. Prominent outcrops and underground exposures of high-grade iron ore, together with mention of sizable intersections of hematite in logs of four widely scattered churn—drill holes, indicated the possible occurrence of a substantial tonnage of iron ore at this old copper producer.From March to May 1943, detailed topographic and geologic mapping of the property was done by the Federal Bureau of Mines, the Federal Geological Survey, and the Arizona Bureau of Mines.Funds were allotted for exploration of the property by churn and diamond drilling. This work was started in December 1943 and completed in June 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Energy consumption in domes tic copper production has increased nearly 60 percent in the last 10 years, reaching approximately 175 trillion Btu in 1973. Energy required to produce 1 pound of copper rose from nearly 41,000 Btu in 1963 to nearly 50,000 Btu in 1973. Production from lower grade ores and strict pollution control regulations have contributed to this increase. Each stage of copper production has been analyzed to determine total energy consumed, energy mix required, cost of the energy, and recent or proposed changes in operations which may affect the consumption of energy by the copper industry. Data have been gathered from a recent Bureau of Mines canvass of the industry, from visits to copper operations, and from conversations with copper industry officials.

"INTRODUCTION Initiated as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense, Investigation of the fluorspar deposits of the Northgate area was begun in June 1944 and completed in March l946. Mining Operations were active in the district during most of the period of investigation.The Fluorspar, Fluorine, and Camp Creek mines develop the two more promising vein systems known in the area, the Fluorspar group of claims covering one vein system and the Fluorine and Camp Creek groups the other. Figure 1 shows the location of the properties. The Fluorspar and Fluorine properties were operated (except during the winter months) by the Western Fluorspar Corp. The Camp Creek mine was operated during 1943 and 1944 by Kramer Mines, Inc.The properties were examined April 20 and again November 4 to 12, 1943, by C. R. Wilfley, a Bureau of Mines engineer, who recommended work to determine ore reserves and to serve as a guide for development. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines covered all three properties."

Responsible mining requires stakeholder engagement throughout all operational stages and after mine closure. By assessing the current and anticipated future socio-economic and environmental impacts, a company can maximise the positive impacts they can have on a community, whilst minimising any negative impacts. Despite the current emphasis on companies maintaining effective stakeholder relations to gain their ‘social license’ to operate, findings of the present study reveal a wide variation in community expectations, with different degrees of ‘acceptability’ evident across seven sites in Romania (Rosia Montana), Sweden (Kristineberg), the United Kingdom (Cornwall), Bosnia Herzegovina (Vihovici) and Russia (Karabash, Gay and Mednogorsk). These variations reflect the current status of mining within a community, as well as its socio-economic background and the nature of existing engagement with mining companies already operating in the region.

INTRODUCTION This paper summarizes the result of a two and a half year research program. The objective of the research was to develop a fundamental understanding of the Rib-in-Roc method. Through the development of a new model technology, namely three-dimensional physical models which powerfully exploit the results of dimensional analysis Stillborg, Stephansson and Swan (1), it has been possible to establish the contribution to both permanent and immediate stabilization of a large underground opening pre-reinforced by the Rib-in-Roc method. Using the results from these physical models and earlier work by Stillborg and Stephansson (2) and Åkesson (3), a conceptual synthesis is given in this paper so demonstrating the Rib-in-Roc method to be a practical working system of pre-reinforcement. DESCRIPTION OF THE RIB-IN-ROC METHOD To give the reader an idea of how this method of pre-reinforcement is performed, a short description will be given, Figure 1. Before any full-scale excavation takes place an entry is made in the host rock and rib raises are driven around the proposed opening. These raises are made at a spacing that is dependent upon rock quality; an opening in poor rock needs more ribs per length of opening. As the ribs are driven they are used as a site from which very competent rock bolting can be done. As a rib is excavated it is filled with reinforced concrete. Finally after having in this way reinforced the zone around the proposed opening, (a reinforced arch is formed) the displacements are automatically controlled as the opening is being excavated. Using this method openings with a span of 50-60 meters (160-200 ft) and a height of 60-80 meters (200-260 ft) are likely to be realised.

Siendo la veta principal San Cristóbal, una de las estructuras que atraviesan el Anticlinal Chumpe en la provincia de Yauli, su explotación ha sido limitada a las rocas volcánicas y filitas en el flanco sur-oeste del anticlinal. Por tal motivo, el texto señala que el análisis de la distribución de los metales y minerales dentro de la veta, revela un zoneamiento horizontal bien definido, que es compatible con el origen de las soluciones hidrotermales en el centro del anticlinal. Asimismo, este estudio cuantitativo determina las características de las partes ricas de la veta, trazando líneas de contornos de los cuatro tipos de metal en secciones longitudinales, como los controles de la distribución de metal y relaciona las áreas ricas de la veta con su medio geológico. De otro lado, en San Cristóbal, la distribución del metal presenta una característica zonal donde la paragénesis y el zoneamiento están íntimamente relacionados. Concluyéndose que con la aplicación de los resultados de este estudio, se permitirá una mejor exploración y desarrollo de las áreas ricas de la Veta Principal San Cristóbal y se proporcionará una guía útil para la exploración y desarrollo de vetas paralelas en esta área.

The uptake of zinc, lead, and copper by the flora of the Tui Base Mine area near Te Aroha is described.Vegetation and soil samples were taken from two traverses across the Raukaka Lode. Results. after statistical analysis, indicated that Beilschmiedia tawa was a suitable species for biogeochemical prospecting for lead and that SchefJlera digitata was satisfactory for zinc.The tawa showed a negative anomaly for lead over the vein itself but not over the adjacent dispersion halo. It was concluded that lead concentrations greater than 230 p.p.m. in the wood ash of the tawa and zinc concentrationsgreater than 540 p.p.m. in the leaf ash of S. digitata denoted threshold values for anomalous mineralization in the soil beneath. Although both species contained copper, neither indicated a soil anomaly for this element.

For the period January 1st, 1942, to January 1st, 1946, the American Bureau of Metal Statistics records the gold production of the world as 118,788,000 fine ounces. If we include 1946 at the same rate as 1945 (26,- 590,000), we arrive at a total of 145,378,000 fine ounces in the past five years . Included in these figures are estimates of Russian output at 4,000,000 ounces per annum for the five years, and 1,300,000 ounces per annum for Korea and Japan. The remaining 120,000,000 ounces represent the aggregate production from official reports of the other gold producing areas of the world, with the exception of the 1946 figures, as noted above. At $35.00 per fine ounce, this represents $5,188,230,000. According to the reports of the Federal Reserve System of the United States, on December 31st, 1941, the monetary gold reserves of the United States were $22,736,- 600,000 (at $35.00 per fine ounce) , while on October 31st, 1946 (latest available) , they had fallen to $20,402,000,000, a decline of $2,334,600,000. Adding this decline to the value of the new production for the five years, we have a total of $7,522,830,000, which has been absorbed by the rest of the world since Pearl Harbour, a rate of absorption of over $1,500,000,000 per annum. This has taken place at a rime when the advocates of purely managed currencies had convinced many people that gold performed no really essential function in the world's economy, and that we could get along perfectly well without it. It was pointed out that gold could not be eaten, it could not clothe our nakedness, it could not shelter us from storms, and, therefore, it was a non-essential, even though it could be used to settle international balances of trade. Apparently, the world as a whole still regards it as preferable to the paper promises of governments, however sound, relatively, they may appear. Actually, we have no way of measuring the true strength of this feeling, because the principal governments of the world have made it legally impossible for their citizens to own gold, except in the form of ornaments.

This report presents results of a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of longwall gob material. The objective of this work was to determine material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining, Photographs of actual mine gob were digitized to obtain approximate particle size gradations of gob material. The gradation curve was shifted down to a laboratory scale, and 20 uniaxial compression tests were conducted. Varying the maximum particle size was not found to affect the stress-strain behavior, but changing the gradation appeared to influence the stress-strain behavior. The stress-strain relationship of the simulated gob material was nonlinear, the stress-secant-modulus relationship was approximately linear, and the stress-tangent-modulus relationship was approximately a second-order polynomial function. Equations were generated from these curves, providing numerical modelers with a means to estimate gob moduli based on the stress level. In addition, the experimental data were statistically evaluated using multiple regression analyses, producing a series of equations to predict the secant and tangent moduli from the given stress level, bulking factor, rock strength, and thickness-to-width shape ratio of the particles.

ABSTRACT Decreasing reserves, water shortages, increasing energy costs, and environmental and social constraints are challenges to the gold mining industry that must be met with innovative machines and methods. This paper introduces the principles of sensor-based sorting and installations that demonstrate the technical and financial viability of the method. The scenarios discussed highlight the potential and advantages of this dry processing technology that requires little infrastructure. Case studies are presented for different ore types using optical- and X-ray transmission–based sorting. Current research is discussed in terms of the potential of near-infrared spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence sorting for gold applications.

Dans le but de voir si une région comme la Gaspésie, qui a subi la derniere glaciation , se prête avantageusement à la méthode de prospection alluvionnaire, environ 800 concentrés de minéraux lourds furent prélevés dans les districts électoraux de Matane et de Gaspé-Nord. Les différentes phases minérales présentes dans les concentrés ont été examinées à la loupe binoculaire. Afin de mieux valoriser ce type d'inforrnat ion, nous avons été arnenés à expérimenter et à mettre en oeuvre des techniques multivariables adaptées au traltement d'une information semi-quantitative en utilisant le principe d'un codage logique préalable. La structuration des résultats de la Gaspésie a conduit à l'élaboration de cartes de synthèse qui constituent un support nécessaire à l'interprétatlon des répartitions plus ponctuelles des minéraux "utiles" sur le plan de la recherche minière.

A major highlight of Fiscal Year 1993 is the completion of a new research facility dedicated to the advancement of robotics research and development. This new facility brings to the U.S. Bureau of Mines one of the largest and most unique facilities of its kind in the world. Located at the Bureau's Pittsburgh Research Center, the facility consolidates under one roof, all of the resource requirements of a first class automation and robotics research program. The Mining Robotics Development Center (MRDC) is the result of a major renovation of a large under-utilized warehouse-type structure and brings together the laboratories and offices previously housed in five separate buildings scattered throughout the Pittsburgh Research Center's 238-acre site. This new facility will support the computer-assisted mining research program, a high priority, multi-million dollar program that is expected to have a high impact on the health and safety of miners and coal productivity.

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked the Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No.2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fault has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by = 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It is composed of bands of milky æbuckÆ quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains within quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist. The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.   The Golden Bar lode lies within a steeply dipping normal fault, which, on its footwall side, is adjacent to a 40 m-wide, shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone. Within 1 m of the lode, the shear foliation has been dragged down to nearly parallel the lode footwall. Wall rock alteration is manifested by a marked increase in K and Rb, which correlate with abundant illite/muscovite and K-feldspar within 2 m of the footwall of the lode. Amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite show a progressive decrease towards the lode. As and Sb increase close to the lode, but are at background levels within the lode itself. Enhanced Cr (150-430 ppm) in the quartz, relative to the schists (~40 ppm), suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic rocks, such as the metabasites from the hanging wall of the lode (~400 ppm Cr).

The present final report constitutes the total productivity of a series of contracts from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences over the period 1971-1979. The emphasis on the research has been analytical. In this "executive summary" we give a succinct description of each phase of the investigation. In the first phase of the investigation that was stimulated by the National Academy of Engineering, we concentrated on the analytical studies of techniques relevant to mine rescue. Several specific procedures for locating a buried source were analyzed. In the next, but overlapping phase of the investigation, we dealt with the fundemental character of how electromagnetic waves propagate in mine tunnels. At the outset we allowed for the finite conductivity of the tunnel walls and the presence of axial conductors such as cables, pipes, and tracks. The third phase of the investigation was devoted to the analyses of various specific geophysical engineering problems. The related fourth phase dealt with the general subject of non-destructive testing of wire ropes such as used for mine hoists.

The paper provides an overview of subsidence research which was done by the Sasol Company in South Africa over a period of more than six years. The magnitudes of subsidence elements in South Africa are largely similar to those in the U.S.A. and Australia, as opposed to Europe. The research resulted in a subsidence prediction method with a new approach to the prediction of ground strain. The paper also describes the effects of subsidence on various commonly occurring surface structures such as roads, overland conveyor belts, pipe lines and power pylons. It is concluded that while most structures are not specifically designed to accommodate mining induced displacements, they can nontheless be undermined safely and economically with only minor precautions.

"The SUSOP« Framework is a new technique that helps incorporate sustainable development principles and objectives into the design and operation of businesses. Developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, it brings a design methodology to sustainability, similar to what hazard and risk techniques such as HAZOP did for safety.Metallica Minerals Limited (æMetallicaÆ) adopted the SUSOP« framework to help identify opportunities and risks that could directly improve or affect its flagship SCONI (nickel-cobalt and scandium) project. This project has the potential to become the worldÆs largest producer of scandium oxide (æscandiaÆ) which is used in solid oxide fuel cells and strengthens aluminium alloys. Located northwest of Townsville in Queensland, the plant site will be located within the previously mined and partially rehabilitated Greenvale Nickel Mine. By applying the SUSOP« framework through a series of multi-disciplinary workshops and offline analysis, Metallica was able to identify numerous sustainability opportunities and risks. Opportunities were clustered together to form concepts to develop a more holistic understanding of the projectÆs overall potential contribution to sustainable development as well as determine where key risks could be mitigated. Four key concepts were identified: Waste and Water Workforce Community and Enterprise Development Energy and Greenhouse Gases (GHG). Metallica was able to include a range of initiatives that could deliver enhanced environmental, social and community outcomes into their mine development plan. These included measures to reduce reliance on water, reduce the volume of waste, provide local opportunities for training and skilled employment and create support for local enterprise development. These measures also resulted in a significant reduction in the capital estimate of the project.This paper provides an overview of the SUSOP« framework, details its application to the SCONI project and discusses the outcomes that will help establish the projectÆs strong sustainable development credentials and improved business outcomes.CITATION:Corder, G, Currey, N and Becker, G, 2013. The purpose of the study was to 1) examine the social and economic impacts of surface mine blasting in relation to variations in conditions of terrain and geology, population density and type, levels of ground motion and air blast; 2) consider technical, legal and government policy issues; and 3) examine the potential, nature and extent of surface mine blasting impacts and its regulations upon both communities and surface mining companies. Phase One designed the empirical research and technical analyses of Phase Two, focused upon surface coal mining and quarrying in the Eastern U.S. Several broad conclusions are evident: 1) blasting is not the major issue for communities or surface mine companies; 2) while the number of instances of severe cracking or annoyance are relatively small, the impact can be severe for individuals immediately involved; 3) blasting/drilling cost curves tend to rise significantly at intervals below 1.0 particle velocity, in/sec, dependent upon the size of a permit area and the size of a mine; and 4) the legal, complaint, cost and density analyses do not suggest the need for a general lowering of present regulations.
