Bag stackers who use semi-automated palletizing machines and air slides may be exposed to high concentrations of dust. To reduce dust exposure, use an exhaust ventilation system in conjunction with an envelope of clean air over the bagstacker provided by an overhead air supply. Description of Hazard Mineral processing plants in the United States and throughout the world process material that is finely ground and placed into bags for shipping to the consumer. These bags normally range from 50 to 100 pounds in weight. Once the material is placed in these bags, a bag stacker loads the bags onto pallets. A bag stacker is exposed to a lot of dust that is mainly released by the force from loading the bag onto the pallet. The two main sources are the dust on the outside of the bag and the dust that escapes from inside the bag as it is loaded. The Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) records indicate the bag stacker's dust exposure is one of the highest of all workers at mineral processing operations. Ways to reduce the dust exposure and strain to the bag stacker are in constant development. Recently, automated systems have been built. These systems range from fully automated, which totally remove the worker from the bag-stacking process, to semiautomated systems, in which the bag stacker still performs some of the functions. This Hazard Control deals with controlling the bag stacker's dust exposure during use of a semi-automated palletizing machine. The worker slides the bags into position on the palletizing machine. Once an entire layer of bags is positioned, the bag stacker operates the controls on the palletizing machine to lower the layer of bags onto the pallet. An air slide is built into the semi-automated palletizing machine so the bags are easier to move. This slide uses a metal table with air jets that exit through small holes at high velocities, similar to an air hockey game. The dust problem occurs because the air slide causes dust to blow up onto the bag stacker, significantly increasing the dust exposure.

Barras trefiladas podem não apresentar o perfil desejado pelos seus fabricantes após o processo de produção, por isso, este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar diferentes geometrias de ferramentas, mais precisamente, o ângulo de entrada e região de calibração (Hc) da mesma. Para modelamento numérico do processo, foi utilizado o software DeformTM, que possibilitou este estudo, com simulações da influência da ferramenta no perfil de tensões residuais dos produtos (barras de aço AISI1045). Foram analisados os diferentes comportamentos do material para processos com fieiras de ângulos de 15° e 20°, com foco nas variações de tensões residuais visando investigar o produto final da trefilação. Em uma das principais comparações entre as fieiras anteriormente mencionadas, observou-se uma diferença de tensões residuais de aproximadamente 206MPa no centro das barras trefiladas, resultado que somado a distribuições assimétricas de tensões em relação ao ponto central de determinado corte da barra, podem ocasionar o seu empenamento.

Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 2 and 3 provide a summary view of the importance of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1989 and 1990.

Previously published stream quality data and AMD (acid mine drainage) analyses have been collated into a database (DAME û Database for Assessment of Mine Environments) and additional samples including NMD (neutral mine drainage) have been collected from coal mine drainages on the West Coast. Variations in the chemistry of mine drainage samples can be related to four factors: 1.       regional geology (Brunner Coal Measures or Paparoa Coal Measures) 2.       mine type (open cast or underground) 3.       hydrogeology 4.       local geology   In general mines hosted in Paparoa Coal Measures produce NMD whereas mines hosted in Brunner Coal Measures produce AMD with highly variable chemistry. Differences in coal mine drainage chemistry between mines hosted in Brunner and Paparoa Coal Measure sequences can be measured with acid-base accounting geochemistry. Correlation of ANC (acid neutralising capacity) and MPA (maximum potential acidity) analysis of rocks with mine drainage samples is substantially better than correlation of NAG (net acid generation) analysis with mine drainage chemistry.   It is likely that NAG analysis over estimates acid generation potential of some samples due to release of organic acids that are not released under environmental conditions. In general, differences in mine drainage chemistry between Brunner and Paparoa hosted mines are attributed to the effect depositional environment and diagenesis on coal measure composition. Exceptions to generalisations relating mine drainage to Paparoa or Brunner host rocks are likely where local geological conditions cause increased deposition of pyrite in Paparoa rocks and additional analyses are required to confirm interpretations.   Based on the interpretation of these results a mine drainage chemistry hazard model has been constructed. The hazard model predicts likely variations in mine drainage chemistry based on the four factors listed above. The hazard model has implications for mine related water quality risks. For example, ecotoxicity, human health affects and selection of remediation techniques are all sensitive to mine drainage chemistry.

The East Side Access (ESA) project is the largest underground rail infrastructure project under construction in New York City, USA. The Manhattan segment of the project is to be mined through rock and consists of 4.1 miles of Tunnel Boring Machine tunnels for track work and mined excavations to house rail switches, air plenums, and other rail facilities. This paper considers different methods for concrete lining, such as the use of fixed forms, adjustable forms, and pneumatically applied shotcrete. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed and the basis for considering one over the other are illustrated. Further discussions on design development and preparation of documents to facilitate quality and constructability in the field are presented.

Many future and current block and panel caves extract ore from veined rock masses. These rock masses are composed of open joints forming blocks or rock with healed networks of veinlets. These two types of discontinuities pose a challenge for rock mass characterisation and classification due to difficulties in distinguishing actually open joints from healed but weak veins when diamond core drilling and excavation blasting practices disturb the rock mass. The inability of separating characteristics of open joints and healed veins has often resulted in an underestimation of the rock mass quality and as a consequence led to inappropriate assessments of rock mass response to mining (ie rock mass behaviour) and consequently deficient excavation stability assessments and ground support designs. In this paper, guidelines are provided to improve the characterisation and classification of veined rock masses. It is shown how veined rock masses can be mischaracterised resulting in often incorrect forecasting of rock mass behaviour. Following this, the classification of veined rock masses is examined. It is shown how the primary classification systems (ie Q – Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; rock mass rating (RMR) – Bieniawski, 1976) may not lead to reliable ratings in veined rock masses if care is not taken to differentiate between open joints and veins of varying strength. Examples are provided to illustrate how the Q and RMR systems are insensitive to veining. The metallogenic map of New Zealand shows the distribution of metallic mineral deposits, according to type and size, in relation to their geological setting. The major purpose of the map and accompanying 200-page monograph is to summarise the distribution, modes of occurrence and origins of the metallic mineral deposits of New Zealand. The map demonstrates the prospectivity of New Zealand for metallic minerals, particularly gold, silver, iron, and titanium. Information on each deposit is summarised in index tables based on major geotectonic units or deposit/commodity type. The mineral deposits are arranged and discussed in relation to tectonostratigraphic and tectonomagmatic units or terranes, under broad geotectonic divisions of the Paleozoic to Mesozoic Western Province, the late Paleozoic to Mesozoic Eastern Province, the mid Cretaceous to early Tertiary rifting phase, and the late Cenozoic Kaikoura Orogen. Regions or areas of marked concentration of mineralisation are recognised as metallogenic subprovinces or districts, namely: eastern Northland (Hg), the Hauraki Goldfield (epithermal Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu), the west coast of the North Island (shoreline placer Fe), east Nelson (podiform Cr), west Nelson (porphyry Mo), the West Coast of the South Island (shoreline placer Ti), west Nelson-Westland (placer Au), Reefton (mesothermal Au-quartz veins), and Otago (placer Au and mesothermal Au-W quartz veins).

In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. "In early 1995 Cluff Mining commissioned a newly constructed high density tailings thickener at its Cluff Lake uranium mill. The 85 ft diameter high density thickener is one of the first of its kind in North America, and incorporates the novel paste technology in its design to produce densified (in the range of 60 -65% solids) mill tailings suitable for stable deposition in the tailings management area. This paper discusses the impetus behind the installation of such an unconventional thickener, and the many trying experiences in making it operational.IntroductionCluff Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cogema Resources Inc., is the operator of a uranium mine and mill complex at Cluff Lake which is located in northern Saskatchewan. Since 1980, the company has developed and mined out several different ore bodies within the Cluff Lake region for the production of uranium concentrates, commonly known as yellow cake. Based on the known ore reserves, the Cluff Lake operations are projected to last till the early 2000's.Tailings from the Cluff Lake mill have been discharged to a tailings management area consisting of a tailings pond and two facilities for primary and secondary treatment systems. The tailings pond has an impervious bentonite lined dam, and it is divided into a solids and a liquids holding areas. Until the beginning of 1995, the mill tailings were discharged in two separate lines to the solids pond; one line carried the slurry residue of 45-50% solids (w/w) from the CCD circuit, and the other discharged raffinate tails containing less than 1 % (w/w) gypsum precipitate. Supernatant in the solids pond is treated in the primary treatment system prior to discharging to the liquids pond. Figure 1 shows the site plan of Cluff Lake tailings management area.It has been estimated that by the end of 1995 the solids pond would be filled to about 60% of its design capacity, and probably would be full before the year 2000. Therefore, Cluff Mining had to consider a more efficient tailings disposal method that could extend the service life of the existing Cluff Lake tailings management area. A high density tailings thickener was believed to be the most practical and economical system for tailings disposal at Cluff Lake mine."

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system's ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system's ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system.

"In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

This paper describes the large diameter caisson foundation for the upstream guidewall at the Lock and Dam No. 26 (Replacement) Project. The guidewall is supported on two rows of 1.8-m diameter concrete filled caissons. The 28.8 m long caissons are embedded 15.5 m into the foundation material and have an unsupported length of 12.2 m. This paper describes the philosophy and design decisions leading to this unique caisson design. The construction success and problems for the load test caisson will be discussed. The full scale 13,350-kN caisson load test and the associated lateral load tests will be described and the test results presented.

Cylindrical bridge piers are widely used and equations exist that can predict the maximum depth of local scour around such piers. Scour around piers is an undesirable phenomenon, as it requires the foundation to be placed to a greater depth resulting in increased cost, making it worthwhile to investigate scour-reducing measures. A number of scour-reducing measures have been tried out for cylindrical bridge piers including placing a concrete collar around the pier, having a delta-wing projecting upstream in front of the pier, placing riprap around the pier, using a group of piers instead of a single pier, having a slot in the pier aligned in the longitudinal direction. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of upstream protective piles on reduction of maximum local scour depth around a cylindrical bridge pier. The upstream piles are placed at different radial distances in front of the pier and the scour depths are observed. The proposed equation of Dey (1997) for determining the maximum depth of scour around a cylindrical bridge pier is used. The reduction of local scour around the pier is compared with local scour around an unprotected pier.

A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise-induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise- induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise-induced hearing loss. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard SecoS215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock debris, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via an exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. Penetration rate was somewhat improved compared to that of the standard drill, so that productivity could be maintained. Keywords: Drill, rock drill, quiet, noise, mine, underground.

The local geology, the lack of recorded mining activity, and our field investigation and associated sampling indicate a low potential for mineral resources. Claim records and the literature review failed to show any lode or heavy mineral placer mining claim locations that are definitely in the area or anomalous mineral concentrations in the study area. Field investigations revealed no claims, prospects, or mineralized areas.

This paper concentrates on ground control innovation in Europe since the first Morgantown conference, mainly from a UK perspective. In particular, it describes the rock engineering and ground control tools developed to address the mine support and design problems associated with coal mining at great depth in areas influenced by previous workings. The differences in approach across the Western European industries are also examined. Perhaps the most significant change in the period has been in the science of coal mine rock mechanics itself, with support design now based firmly on measurement, analysis and understanding. The ground control innovations described here have played their part in increasing the efficiency with which coal is mined and in increasing safety to the extent that fall of ground accidents are now rare.

Over the last few decades, water-based explosives and their precursors, despite their apparent insensitivity, have been involved in a number of accidents around the world. A large proportion of these accidents occurred when these emulsions were pumped either for their manufacture, transport, or handling. In Canada, this has led to the development of “Guidelines for the Pumping of Water-Based Explosive”, which state that “using pumping pressures well below the laboratory measured minimum burning pressure (MBP) of the corresponding emulsions or watergels is a good safety practice”. However, in the above document, there is no description on how the MBP should be measured. In the last few years, a research program at the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory (CERL) in collaboration with Orica has been focused on the development of a validated measurement protocol for realistic MBP measurements.

Rock dynamics is one of the most important topics in the field of rock mechanics and rock engineering. The spectrum of rock dynamics is very wide and it includes the failure of rocks, rock masses and rock engineering structures such as rock bursting, spalling, popping, collapse, toppling, sliding, blasting, non-destructive testing, geophysical explorations, science and engineering of rocks, earthquakes, and impacts. Undoubtedly, the rock dynamics issues in Mars would remain to be the same. Although mankind has no direct access to Mars yet, the Mars exploration rovers (Opportunity, Sprit, Curiosity and Perseverance), Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and InSight Lander provided very valuable data so that some rock dynamics issues can be recognised. The author reports his considerations on rock dynamics issues in Mars from very careful examination of images and data provided from MERs and MRO and discusses their implications.

These standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance that, in all material respects, fair presentation is achieved in the financial statements. The audit included an evaluation of the appropriateness of the accounting policies, an examination, on a test basis, of evidence that supports the amounts and disclosures included in the financial statements, an assessment of the reasonableness of significant estimates, and a consideration of the appropriateness of the overall financial statement presentation. We consider that our auditing procedures were appropriate in the circumstances to enable us to express our opinion presented here.
