A leaching column technique that produces effluent similar in quality to coal mine drainage in the Eastern Interior Basin has been developed. The columns are charged with 1000 grams of crushed overburden and cycled through the leaching process once a week for twelve weeks. Inter-relationships among the important chemical constituents are very similar to those present in actual mine drainage waters, but the overall concentrations of ion are more dilute in the leachates. Multiplying the leachate concentrations by a factor of 4.5 gives values similar to mine waters. Available data suggests that each of the leaching cycles represents about three years of natural weathering, so that the leaching technique can predict the evolution of the mire drainage water over a time span of nearly 40 years. Use of the leaching technique with drill core samples should provide a method of approximating mine drainage quality in advance of mining and should be quite useful in identifying potentially toxic units in the overburden. However, the results should he considered to be a 'worst case' situation because the technique' does not consider the effects of reclamation.

Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. A liga AZ91D apresenta 9%pAl e 1%pZn e pode ser submetida a tratamento térmico de solubilização seguido de envelhecimento para melhoria de propriedades mecânicas por meio de precipitação da fase beta-Mg17Al12. Esta fase, porém, pode ter efeitos distintos sobre o comportamento de corrosão da liga. Buscando estudar a influência do tamanho de grão da matriz alfa e a presença de precipitados beta sobre a resistência à corrosão da liga AZ91D, este trabalho utilizou lingotes com estrutura bruta de fusão na obtenção de amostras solubilizadas, laminadas a frio e então envelhecidas, para subsequente análise microestrutural e do comportamento de corrosão. A solubilização ocorreu a 445ºC por 24h e foi efetiva em dissolver quase completamente a fase beta. A laminação levou a uma redução de 20% da espessura das amostras e de 400 para 130 µm o tamanho de grão médio, após envelhecimento. O envelhecimento feito a 200ºC em 2 e 24h permitiu a precipitação de fase beta em maior quantidade e melhor distribuição por contornos de grão em relação às amostras fundidas ou solubilizadas. Ensaios de imersão foram realizados, apontando uma leve queda na taxa média de corrosão quando se lamina a amostra, enquanto as amostras solubilizadas (sem fase beta) mostraram maior susceptibilidade à corrosão. Assim, é possível indicar que o refinamento de grãos é benéfico ao formar uma rede de proteção em ligas de magnésio AZ91D, apesar de introduzir defeitos gerados pela laminação.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African platinum group metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky Reef is low in chromium and does not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8?10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process, care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation of Fe2NiO4 (trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever-increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3.A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. Para a maior eficiência na técnica conhecida como Slag Splashing, empregada com fins de manutenção e reparo de refratários de convertedor LD, a escória deve apresentar características apropriadas em termos de viscosidade e fração de sólidos. No presente trabalho, desenvolveu-se uma metodologia híbrida, combinando a utilização de padrões para a caracterização visual de escórias na planta, baseada em critérios de atribuição de notas, com a simulação termodinâmica usando o software FactSage para determinação das fases presentes na escória, quantificação de fração de sólidos e cálculo da viscosidade efetiva. A metodologia proposta permite identificar os quadrantes ideais de viscosidade efetiva, fração de sólidos e teor de ferro total, de modo que se possa garantir escórias com notas altas, apresentando qualidade apropriada para o processo. Os resultados indicam que as escórias com nota 3 (ótima) são obtidas nas seguintes condições: temperatura de fim de sopro de 1690-1720ºC, viscosidade efetiva na faixa de 0,070-0,650 Pa.s, fração de sólidos de 13-22%, teor de ferro total na escória de 14-17,5%..

An experimental study has been made of the possible mechanisms for foam stability in the system CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3, where Cr2O3is the foaming agent. The degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600 "C for high -silica melts. Measurements were also made of foam stability under standardized conditions. The results of the two sets of measurements then were correlated by applying the Gibbs and Marangoni theories of film elasticity. It was demonstrated that the Marangoni elasticity effect is probably the largest single contributor to foam stability, although the high uiscosity of' silicate melts makes some contribution in controlling the rate of drainage of liquid from bubble lamellae. ThE tendency of metallurgical slags to foam has frequently been observed during steel-refining operations. In the open-hearth furnace,this tendency is considered undesirable because it slows down the rate of heat transfer from the burners to the molten-metal bath. On the other hand, it is sometimes desirable to have a "foamy" slag in the basic oxygen converter.' A more effective blanket over the steel bath is made by a "foamy" slag, and loss in yield of metal due to splashing is minimized. In addition, a flush slag can be removed more easily in this condition. Since slag-foaming problems in the field have been attacked largely on an empirical basis, it appeared desirable to obtain a better basic understanding of the mechanism of foam stability. The experimental work was directed almost entirely toward the behavior of Cr2O3 as the foaming agent in CaO-SiO,-Cr2O3 melts. In the first stage of the investigation, the degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600°C. The second stage consisted of measuring foam stabilities under standardized conditions. The two sets of experimental results then were correlated by applying various theories of foam stability. For convenience in interpreting the surface-tension and foam-stability results reported here, a portion of the CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3 phase diagram2 is reproduced in Fig. 1. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Surface-Tension Measurements. Very little information is available in the literature on the lowering of surface tension of slags by foaming agents. Kozakevitch 3 mentioned that the addition of 1.5 pct Cr2O3 lowered the surface tension of FeO slightly. In another system, some data on the lowering of surface tension of foaming slags by P2O5 were reported by Cooper and Kitchener.4 The technique used for the surface-tension measurements was the maximum bubble-pressure method,' using a single tube immersed to various depths in the melt. This method has been used extensively in high-temperature systems, such as in liquid metals, slags, and glasses.6,7 It has the advantage that the contact angle between the liquid and the tube material need not be known. It is certainly an honor to have been invited to address the Deep Foundation's Annual Meeting on such a vast and weighty topic as "Present to Future Design Considerations of Deep Foundations." Acknowledging the enormity of this 30-minute assignment, I hope to at least scratch the surface of the topic deep enough to generate some thought and reflection. Design considerations, be they current or future, bring to mind a number of important subtopics which comprise the design process. As shown by Figure 1, a flow chart of this process describes, in general terms, the sequence of a deep foundation design.

The first study discussed transportation of mineral commodities on the inland waterways of the South-Central States.2 Together, the two surveys describe and analyze the flow of foreign and inland waterborne commerce of the gulf coast. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. This report presents production and delivered costs for coal exports from the five major Western coal-exporting countries: Australia, Canada. Colombia, South Africa, and the United States. Cost data were compiled from visits to 43 mines by U.S. Bureau of Mines engineers between 1985 and 1990. All report costs are in January 1989 U.S. dollars per short ton. Production costs for raw coal are divided into mining and regulatory categories. Costs are broken down by type of cost, type of mine. and country. Scheduled operating and capital costs for raw coal were processed by the Bureau's MINSIM discounted cash flow program to determine total production costs calculated at 0% and 15% discounted cash flow rates of return (DCFROR). Delivered costs are for salable coal delivered to various markets. Costs are broken down by supply country, market, and type of cost. Scheduled operating and capital costs for salable coal were processed by the Bureau's MINSIM discounted cash-flow program to determine total salable coal costs at 0% DCFROR. Added to total salable coal costs were transportation and port costs to get delivered costs. Comparative overview information on the coal industries of the five study countries are appended. This appendix includes information on industry economics and exports, production and reserves, and coal industry issues.

A preliminary examination of the Dayton iron deposit was made in 1941 and 1942 by Paul E. Pesonen and O. H. Metzger, engineers of the Bureau of Nines. Trenching and sampling were recommended, to be followed by core drilling if favorable results were obtained. The Bureau of Mines conducted a project at the property from June to December 1942. The deposit is in sec. 6, T. 17 N., R. 23 E.; sec. 31, T. 18 N., R. 23 E.; sec. 36, T. 18 N., R. 22 E.; and sec. 1, T. 17 N., R. 22 E., M. D. B. & M., about 15 miles west of Lahontan Reservoir in Lyon and Storey Counties, Nev. It lies at an altitude of about 4,500 feet north of the Carson Plains, in the foothill section of mountains that rise to about 7,000 feet to the north of the property. The deposit may be reached by driving 12.5 miles northeast of Dayton over U. S. Highway 50, thence northerly 2.7 miles over a dirt road to the property. The climate is hot and dry in summer, with occasional thunderstorms some of cloudburst variety, and frequent high winds. Winters are usually moderate, with light snowfall and some subfreezing temperature.

The performance of the world economy improved significantly in 1984. Real world output!/ grew 4.3% (compared with 2.6% in 19831, the highest since the 4.4% increase recorded in 1978 (table 1). The output of industrial nations rose 4.9%, while that of the developing nations rose 3.7%. The United States and Japan had the largest increases in output of the major industrial nations, with respective increases of 6.8% and 5.8% (table 2). The components of real output with the most significant growth in the industrial countries were gross fixed investment (9.2%), consumer expenditure (3.1%), and public consumption (2.5%) (table 1). Industrial output, as measured by industrial production indices, has returned to about the 1980 level for most of the major industrial nations (table 2). Exceptions to this were industrial production in Japan and the United States; Japan's industrial production rose steadily throughout the 5-yr period and is now more than 16% above the 1980 level, and the industrial production index for the United States reached 11 1.2 (1980=100.0). Real total domestic demand grew at 8.7% in the United States, more than double the rate of Japan, which, at 4.0%, had the second-largest growth. Average demand for all industrial countries was up 5.1%. During 1984 the U.S. dollar showed great strength on international markets, contributing to large current-dollar negative net exports of goods and services and even larger negative net exports of the merchandise sector. While growing U.S. imports helped spread the benefits of the recovery, they also led to a widening of current account imbalances and growing trade tensions throughout the world.3/, 4/

Contract J0275007 was to consist of a thorough two-phase statistical analysis of respirable coal mine dust data from USBM Contracts H0232061, H0232060, H0230029, H0230031, H0210050, and H0242013. Consequently, BCR cataloged and assembled relevant data items from these contracts and formulated procedures suitable for the evaluation. The selected procedure was a Multilinear Regression Analysis which related dust concentrations measured in the mine to other mine parameters. Under the first phase, a thorough analysis of the date from USBM Contract No. H0230029 was completed. Primary results from this analysis are as follows: (1) The five variables that significantly affect dust concentrations in the return behind the brattice are the spray system utilized; the distance from the face to the return brattice; the return airflow; the production rate; and the water consumption rate, in that order. These five variables describe about 85 percent of the total variation in the return dust concentration. (2) Results at the miner and jack-setter locations were somewhat less conclusive due to the fact that only 17 percent of the variation in dust at the miner could be resolved and only 48 percent of the variation at the jack-setter location could be explained. The decision of the sponsor was that these initial results revealed as much information as could be expected; thus, per instructions from the USBM, the second phase (analysis of the other five contracts) was abandoned.

"""Preg-robbing"" of gold by carbonaceous matter during the cyanidation of certain types of carbonaceous gold ores is well documented. Recent studies established that ""preg-robbing"" of gold is not limited to carbonaceous matter. Gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite grains was detected and quantified by TOF-LIMS (Time of Flight Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry). Crystallites of pyrite from a number of ores from different geological environments have been shown to have gold on their surface apparently sorbed from the ore forming solutions. Surface gold accounts for significant fractions of the gold head assay. Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant cyanide solutions was also documented, and accounts for significant losses to tailings. Preventative measures are discussed.1.0 IntroductionThe detection and subsequent quantification of gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite particulates came about during routine determinations of the deportment of gold employing the comprehensive mineralogical approach (Chryssoulis and Cabri, 1990). In some pyritic gold ores it was discovered that the sum of the various forms in which gold ""conventionally"" occurs, was short of the gold assay. The mineralogical procedure used involves the independent determination of each fraction of gold, in other words there is no form of gold which is calculated ""by difference"". The systematic shortfall after having added the forms of gold listed in Table 1 led to the inquiry for the 'missing' gold and its discovery on the surface of pyrite grains, such as crystal facets and fractured surfaces.Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant solutions was first described by Lloyd. In his studies, preg-robbing was measured by changes in the solutions/solids gold assays. This paper describes the first application of a direct measurement method for surface gold on pyrite particles from untreated and processed samples, its impact on gold deportment and processing. The advantage of the direct measurement lies in the absence of interference from other forms of gold, leading to more accurate and precise determinations of this unconventional form of gold."

The applicability of a rotating drum with an attached trommel as a flocculation dewatering device of Florida phosphatic claywastes was studied. Several experiments were conducted in order to determine the important fabrication and operating parameters. Results from the experiments indicated flint the dosage of polyethylene oxide required to form a satisfactory product cake could be reduced by using the rotary drum, which introduces less shear stress into the fluid than a constant stirred tank mixer. It was found that the length of the mixer was the most important parameter. Increased length increased the retention time the flocs stayed in the mixer without dewatering. Such increased time decreased the stability of the flocs. Through analysis of residence time distribution data it was found that the longer mixers approached plug flow characteristics. Other important parameters were trommel length and rotational speed. Mixers from 10 cm diameter to 35.6 cm diameter were tested with good results.

A rapid, accurate method for predicting the dew points of gas condensate systems and their subsequent normal and retrograde phase behavior with pressure decline has been developed. The method predicts dewpoint pressure, volume percent liquid, condensate content of produced gas, and the liquid and gas compositions at pressures below the dewpoint pressure. Use of a modified form of the BWR equation of state, which was established by regression calculations on experimental data from several gas condensates, provides depletion behavior predictions that are significantly improved over predictions using K-values based on convergence pressures and Standing's correlation for density. INTRODUCTION Prediction of complex hydrocarbon-mixture thermodynamics is fundamental to reservoir and gas process engineering. In particular, accurate descriptions of phase behavior are needed to plan production operations for gas-condensate reservoirs. Although analysis of reservoir behavior during producing and cycling operations can be made for simple reservoir models, extensions of these studies to more complex reservoir systems are still difficult, both with regard to numerical techniques and the phase behavior of the fluids. This report presents a mathematical method for handling the complex phase relationships encountered in retrograde condensates; it represents an advance in reservoir behavior technology in that it will aid the development of closed-form mathematical representations of total production systems. A typical phase diagram for a complex hydrocarbon mixture is shown in Fig. 1. When the reservoir temperature T, is higher than the critical temperature Tc, and lower than the critical-condensation temperature Tct' the mixture is a gas condensate. Decreasing the pressure on a condensate while maintaining nearly constant temperature will result in two phases forming at the dew point. Further decrease in pressure will cause additional liquids to be formed. This phenomenon is called retrograde condensation. As pressure continues to decrease, normal phase behavior regions are encountered (liquid vaporizes as the pressure decreases) until the low-pressure dew point is encountered. When a gas-condensate reservoir is produced, gas is withdrawn and the volume of fluids in the reservoir remains nearly constant as the pressure declines. Heavier components tend to accumulate in the liquid phase as a result of retrograde condensation, while lighter components tend to concentrate in the vapor phase. Conventional methods to characterize the fatigue behavior of metallic materials are very time and cost consuming. That is why the new short-time procedure PHYBALCHT was developed at the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Kaiserslautern. This innovative method requires only a planar material surface to perform cyclic force-controlled hardness indentation tests. To characterize the cyclic elastic-plastic behavior of the test material the change of the force-indentation-depth-hysteresis is plotted versus the number of indentation cycles. In accordance to the plastic strain amplitude the indentation-depth width of the hysteresis loop is measured at half minimum force and is called plastic indentation-depth amplitude. Its change as a function of the number of cycles of indentation can be described by power-laws. One of these power-laws contains the hardening-exponentCHT eII, which correlates very well with the amount of cyclic hardening in conventional constant amplitude fatigue tests. To identify heat-treatment-parameters and SAE 52100 TRIP-alloys with high hardening rates as well as their damage tolerance the PHYBALCHT- and PHYBALLIT-method were used. One modified SAE 52100 TRIP-alloy was investigated in detail. The fatigue behavior and the cyclic hardening of the selected SAE 52100 TRIP-alloy was investigated and compared with conventional SAE 52100. Conventional stress-controlled fatigue tests were performed on a servo-hydraulic test system with a frequency of 5 Hz and a load ratio of R = -1. Different rates of cyclic hardening were identified. The size of the nonmetallic inclusions leading to crack initiation and the number of cycles to failure were used to evaluate differences in the damage tolerance capability.

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics.
