The Somita plant processes low sulphide gold ore in Burkina Faso with a CIL process. After experiencing recurrent low gold recoveries, Somita undertook an investigation on the source of the problem. COREM conducted a mineralogical study on different pit samples. A series of tests was also conducted on a composite sample from the plant which shows a content of 3.4 g/t in gold and 0.48 % in graphite. A reference test in laboratory resulted in a recovery of gold of 75%, similar to plant recoveries for the evaluated ore. In these tests, even if cyanide is not deficient, it was diverted mainly into iron cyanide complex, copper cyanide complexes and by graphite adsorption. Causes of low recovery were also identified and quantified. Solutions to increase gold recovery were suggested such as increasing gold dissolution kinetics by O2 or by lead nitrate addition, change in activated carbon addition point location to the 1st cyanidation tank and finer grinding to increase liberation. Increase in the pH could also contribute to reduce cyanidation consumption. Following these recommendations, Somita changed carbon addition from tank 2 to tank 1 in the CIL circuit. This change led to an increase of more than 5% in gold recovery. A system for the addition of lead nitrate is also under implementation at the plant and benefit will be evaluated in 2013. Finally, pit management for cyanidation will be done based on mineralogy instead of gold content in the future.

The SO2-ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor generated by leaching of manganese nodules, after removal of minor quantities of iron and manganese, contained copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper from the leach liquor with LIX 84I, stripping of ammonia from the Cu-barren raffinate was carried out followed by precipitation of metal ions from the ammonia-stripped solution as sulfides. Leaching of the sulfide precipitate was carried out with H2SO4 to obtain a leach liquor containing 0.58 kg/m3 Cu, 2.67 kg/m3 Zn, 2.00 kg/m3 Co, 24.68 kg/m3 Ni and 10.0 kg/m3 (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper and zinc from the sulfate leach liquor with LIX 84I and D2EHPA, respectively, the solution was left with Co and Ni. Extraction of cobalt from the Cu- and Zn-free solution was carried out with 0.1 M PC88A and stripping of the cobalt-loaded organic was carried out with the cobalt-spent electrolyte (pH 1.4). Extraction of nickel from the cobalt-free solution was carried out with 90% neutral 1M NaPC88A followed by stripping of the nickel-loaded organic with 120 kg/m3 H2SO4 solution. Extraction of metal ions increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The maximum separation factors, with respect to the pH and extractant concentration variation studies, were 3796.7 and 15350.0, respectively. The extracted species for the metal ions were CoA2?3HA and NiA2?5HA.

"The use of continuous loading and conveying technology for mining is currently practiced in relatively few mining environments and, even in these cases, on a non-exclusive basis. For the most part, and particularly in hard rock mining, appropriate equipment technology has only recently been developed for continuous loaders, mobile low profile crushers and flexible face conveyors. Mining R&D work by Inco Limited has promoted the development and proving of a loader suited to hard rock conditions and capable of sustained loading rates of500 tonnes per hour. Current R&D work at Inco will test the production capabilities of a low profile mobile crusher by CMS/Eagle and a flexible/ mobile face conveyor system by DME. This follows successful production testing of the Belt Bender concepts in potash mining in Saskatchewan and the development of enhanced extensible conveyor equipment features by DME. Numerous applications are seen for variations of the LCC technology in soft rock, hard rock and surface mining environments. Introduction In some respects, this paper is an announcement of new technology which has the potential to bring revolutionary change to the mining industry. It is also the story of technology transfer, in which mining concepts that have developed independently in underground soft rock and hard rock mines and in surface mining operations are being brought together for a common benefit. It is also the story of key developments in equipment technology which 'complete the cycle' of cooperating technical capabilities to enable the revolution to begin. The phrase ""technological revolution"" requires some defmition: an equipment innovation, or invention, or improvement, will only be revolutionary if its use gives rise to a significant new mining practice."

This report summarizes a study conducted to determine the state of the art of various rock removal systems and their capabilities. The objective of the study was to determine if currently manufactured equipment can adequately accomplish rock removal in surface mine reclamation applications. Evaluations of state reclamation regulations, with regard to topsoil rock content, were made to determine the rock removal requirements. The major categories of equipment studied are rock pickers and rock rakes. The impact of rock removal implementation on the reclamation operations is discussed in detail.

FURTHER study of data used in determinations of 1—rates of diffusion of boron in austenite and 2—solubilities of boron in the a and phases of iron and steel' has provided an equation for the diffusion of boron in a iron. In brief, the previously published data were accumulated from the results of deboron-izing (and decarburizing) experiments carried out in the range of 700° to 1300°C. Diffusion coefficients (D?) for boron in austenite were calculated using the Grube solution of Fick's law. However, only solubility values were estimated from the discontinuous concentration-penetration curves, Fig. 1, which are characteristic of diffusion in two phases. Dr. Carl Wagner' has recently provided a solution for calculating D values from penetration curves of this type as follows: Cl1.1 —C8/C8- C11.1 = vp ? e ? erf (?) and D = ?/4?2 t where C11,12, C8, C11, and E have the values shown in Fig. 1. D is the diffusion coefficient, sq cm per sec; t is time of deboronizing anneal, see; and ? is a di-mensionless parameter. For a given diffusion experiment, the value of ? can be readily obtained by graphical solution from a plot of y vs the right-hand part of Eq. 1. D may then be evaluated from Eq. 2. The avplication of this solution to previously re-ported results, of which excerpts are given in Table I, permits the calculation of diffusion coefficients for boron in a iron. On the basis of these meager data, it is tentatively concluded that the diffusion of boron in a may be represented by the equation Da = 1011 e-92,900/RT where R is the gas constant, cal X 0C-1 X mol-1; and T is the absolute temperature, OK. Although the frequency factor, 106 sq cm per sec, is admittedly several orders of magnitude higher than expected, the value of Q, 62,000 cal per mol, appears reasonable and is, in fact, very similar to that for the self-diffusion of iron. It is pertinent to mention at this point that the value of Q obtained for the diffusion of boron in austenite by means of the Wagner solution is 19,000 cal per mol and is in excellent agreement with the value previously reported1 in the equation DT = 2xl0-3 e-21,000/RT [4] which was determined by the application of the Grube solution to other data. The fact that determined constants A and Q in the equation D? = A e-Q/RT were practically the same, independent of whether the Wagner or Grube solutions were used in determinations of D values, strengthened the authors' belief that the computed values of D (Table I) using the Wagner solution are reliable. The relative values in Eqs. 3 and 4 for the diffusion of boron in the a and ? phases, respectively, suggest that boron forms a substitutional solid solution in a iron and an interstitial solid solution in ? iron. The same tentative conclusion has been reached by McBride et al.3 on the basis of relative solubilities, atom diameter, and the size of the interstitial hole in a and ? iron. In connection with the data for test 14 listed in Table I, it is of interest to calculate the solubility of boron in a iron using the D value given by Eq. 3. As might be anticipated from the small movement of the interface in test 14, proper substitutions in Eqs. 2 and 1 give a low value, approximately 0.0004 pct B, at 850°C. Apparently at 835°C (test 13) it is possible to obtain 0.0018 pct B, and at 850°C only 0.0004 pct B into solution in the a phase before a second phase appears. These observations are consistent with the Fe-B constitution diagram proposed by McBride, Spretnak, and Speiser.3 References P. E. Busby, M. E. Warga, and C. The route of a new, 4-mile long, electrical transmission line passed through residential neighborhoods and commercial areas of a small town in the South Carolina Coastal Plain. The new line consisted of 54 new poles and a one-mile underground section. Most of the new poles were constructed within 50 ft of existing structures, and in some cases, within 8 ft to 20 ft. A widely-space subsurface exploration consisting of 20 cone penetration test soundings indicated the subsurface conditions along the alignment generally consisted of saturated, loose to medium dense, fine slightly silty to silty sand. The pole foundations consisted of 20 to 30 ft long, prefabricated ?caissons? (essentially an open-end pipe pile with a prefabricated connection system at the top) with diameters of 28 to 56 inches. The steel caissons were installed with vibratory pile hammers. To help prevent damage and defend against possible allegations from nearby property owners, vibration and settlement monitoring was performed during all foundation installation activities. Limited structural condition assessments were also performed before and after foundation installation. For 53 of the 54 foundations, the ground vibrations recorded at distances coincident with the nearest structure locations ranged from 0.05 inches per second to 1.46 inches per second. With consideration of the dominant frequency, the majority of these values were below the commonly used USBM vibration limits. For a foundation installation that was only 8 ft from the nearest structure, a peak particle velocity of 3.06 inches per second was recorded, which exceeded the USBM limits. For all cases, the measured ground surface settlement was negligible (i.e., less than ¾ inch). Several spurious claims alleging vibration-induced damage were made, but the monitoring program provided an adequate defense. One claim involving artwork that fell to the floor during foundation installation at a distance of 8 ft from the house was deemed legitimate.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies of the combustion residues of carbonaceous dust particles resulting from explosions and thermal ignitions in laboratory and full-scale mine tests. The dusts studied varied widely in rank and volatility: Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal (35% volatility), Pocahontas seam bituminous coal (16% volatility), anthracite (7% volatility), graphite, and diamond. The most systematic explosion studies were performed in an 8-L chamber with narrow size distributions of Pittsburgh coal dust with surface mean diameters of 2, 22, and 84 pm. Experiments were conducted mainly in air, with some data obtained in 50% 02. Observations of the bituminous coal explosion residues showed particles with rounded edges, particles with blowholes, and some cenospheres. The lower volatility dust residues showed fewer changes from the original, unburned dust. In addition to the experimental studies, results of SEM observations of residues from a mine explosion disaster are reported. Comparison of such residues with those from the laboratory and experimental mine explosions can help investigators determine the extent of dust participation in the disaster and in identifying the possible ignition sources.

The machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor (MMCRDM) is a fixed-location area sampling device developed for possible use at the working face of an underground coal mine. This device, based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance, has evolved over the past eight years through a cooperative effort of the former Bureau of Mines, MSHA, and the Rupprecht & Patashnick Company in Albany, NY. The capability to measure respirable coal mine dust levels on a continuous basis, rather than depending solely on periodic samples obtained from the traditional coal mine dust samplers, has been a goal in the mining industry for nearly two decades. Recently, an extensive series of laboratory and underground tests was conducted by NIOSH with the cooperation of MSHA and coal operators to test the performance of the MMCRDM In preliminary laboratory testing, the MMCRDM seemed to work well. However, in every underground test, when compared to reference samplers placed close to the inlet, the MMCRDM failed to meet the 25% accuracy criterion specified in the contract under which it was developed. Two reasons explain this failure: First, in most tests the bias (the relative discrepancy between the average MMCRDM concentration and the average reference sampler concentration) was too great. Second, the variability of the samplers used for reference comparison was too large. Finally, the underground testing of the MMCRDMs showed that they are quite unreliable at this stage of development. In the majority of mine tests, no more than 10 shifts of data were taken before the MMCRDM failed to function properly. Major breakdowns, requiring the return of the MMCRDM to the factory for repairs, occurred on average every 28 days. To be considered mine-worthy, MMCRDM reliability must be substantially improved. Attributes helpful for this endeavor included surveying, computer, and blasting knowledge. Since not all operators had theseskills, a simpler model, the QuarryAce, was designed to look a t highwall dimensions in 2-D view . Al though less sophisticated than the QuarryMan instrument and its software, it is simpler to instruct in its use and has the ability to determine burdens at different depth levels . An in-house user f r i e n d l y computer program was designed to utilize QuarryAce depth vs. burden data . This program was created to enable laser and computer novices to generate information useful to the everyday blaster."

The “Mill Redesign Project” was completed on time, under budget and delivered the promised improvement in recoveries.This paper describes the methodology of the Mill Redesign Team, details of the process improvements and the critical success factors that helped the team deliver on its promises.With a payback of under one year, the Mill Redesign Project will play a key role in ensuring a competitive edge as INCO embarks on its second century of operation.INTRODUCTIONIt is not uncommon in milling operations to encounter a crisis. That is the point when the process does not behave as expected and fails to respond to the increasingly desperate efforts of the metallurgists and operators. Flowsheet and process changes are attempted and abandoned. With luck, one or more of the changes achieves some mitigation of the original problem or more usually, the original cause of the problem disappears. During the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s, the need for increased process efficiency, higher levels of sulphur rejection to tails and the concurrent development of high capacity mills and flotation cells, resulted in the consolidation of INCO’s Sudbury area milling operations into a single, expanded facility at Clarabelle."

The Bureau of Mines annually canvasses the peat producers in the United states and publishes economic data on the peat industry, based upon reports submitted by producers. This publication lists all producers that reported commercial production to the Bureau for 1960 and presents data on individual plants. The companies named herein represent virtually all commercial producers, although a few small companies may not have been canvassed as the industry has many small operations that operate intermittently. Output of the various companies listed ranged from a few tons to more than 50,000 tons. Peat is included in the Bureau's annual surveys of the mineral industries because peat is classified as a mineral fuel. Although none is used for fuel in the United States, peat is a potential source of energy and ranks as one of our large mineral resources. The domestic peat industry sells peat, chiefly, for use as a soil amendment for general soil-improvement purposes. During the past decade the industry has expanded rapidly with operations increasing from 45 in 1947-494/ to 115 in 1960. Output during this period has more than tripled, increasing from 131,782 short tons to 470,889 short tons.

1. The major sources of heavy metal ions in wastewaters of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District are effluents from metallurgical processing plants. Effluents from mine operations provide a secondary source for heavy metal ions. Based on data analyzed by the Federal Water Quality Administration, mercury and arsenic are escaping from some mill waste ponds, but they are in the suspended phase. 2. Metallurgical process effluents are combined with mine waste effluents in tailings ponds, consequently, the quality of the tailings pond decant water is highly degraded. The major effect of combining metallurgical process effluents with mill wastes is a drastic change of pH in the tailings pond. This chance may be an increase or a decrease depending on the metallurgical process. The effluent from an electrolytic antimony plant drastically increases the pH in the tailings pond permitting the removal in solution of antimony via the pond decant system. The addition of low pH effluents to the tailings ponds results in a net decrease in pH which makes lead, zinc, cadmium, and copper more soluble, thereby permitting their removal from the pond via the decant system.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um suporte cerâmico apropriado para a soldagem unilateral de liga de alumínio, utilizando a cordierita, uma vítria cerâmica constituída de óxidos. Trata-se de uma proposta tecnológica que viabiliza a produtividade da operação de soldagem, mantendo-se inalterada a qualidade da junta soldada ampliando os conhecimentos relacionados aos suportes cerâmicos focando a redução dos custos de fabricação.A soldagem unilateral com este tipo de suporte de solda foi executada em chapas de alumínio com arame de solda de alumínio 4043 pelo processo Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). A eficiência do suporte cerâmico em suportar o metal de solda líquido foi verificada durante a soldagem do passe de raiz. Várias soldas foram executadas em chapas com espessura de 6,35mm para testar a eficiência do suporte. Parâmetros e variáveis do processo foram estudadas: a abertura de raiz, a tensão, a corrente e a energia de soldagem. Os resultados mostraram que o suporte foi eficiente para suportar a poça de solda líquida. Foi possível estimar uma faixa de operação do processo, com abertura de raiz de 2,0 a 6,0 mm e a energia de soldagem calculada ficou entre 0,62 e 1,46 kJ/mm. A soldagem foi realizada com mecanismo para facilitar a saída do arame de alumínio (tocha Push-Pull) sendo soldado puxando, da esquerda para direita, com pequena oscilação lateral em relação ao cordão de solda. As macrografias das juntas soldadas, além de revelar boa penetração lateral (entre 2 a 4,5mm) e reforço de solda com até 2,1mm de altura, pôde revelar ausência de descontinuidades como: trincas, falta de fusão, inclusão de escórias e porosidades.

A historical background of the technique is presented in order to understand different aspects of its field application. The publication enumerates key aspects of the technique as being used in practice in South Africa and North America. The paper also presents an analysis of three case studies in order to demonstrate difficulties associated with the field application of distress blasting in hard rock mines.

As part of its risk management plan, the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) is assessing the condition of its system of raw water conveyance tunnels and connecting pipelines. In 2006, the RWA inspected one of the system?s main tunnels, a 4-mi, 1950s-era tunnel that had not been inspected since its construction. The inspection team prepared extensively for the unknown conditions in the tunnel, and the inspection was completed safely and successfully. This paper describes the team?s pre-entry preparations, dewatering and ventilation efforts, surface-to-tunnel communication, access, physical inspection of the tunnel, and the lessons learned throughout the process. Additionally, this paper will preview planning for the subsequent inspections.

Beside the traditional geomechanical evaluation methods the geotechnical parameters are recognized as important facts of the planning work for multiple seam mining. Standards for applied monitoring and investigation methods for geotechnical determination of drill cores, laboratory rock-tests and observation of roadheadings are the basics for rock mechanics classification and support design. The geomechanical classification is in this context an essential element. The planning procedure, as it is becoming more and more detailed, beginning with the panel layout up to the technical instructions of roadway development and design of roadheading machinery, nowadays uses a lot of geotechnical information that also are expanding to include quantitative determination of more parameters. The current monitoring system includes the description of separation planes using drill cores and roadheading observation as well as laboratory tests of rock-strength and geophysical borehole examinations. This information is analyzed within the geomechanical standard-classification. The re-engineering process of comparison the predicted support success to the actual monitoring results provides the opportunity for continuous optimization of the planning work und support design. This way of empirical analysis is used for basic planning work in Germany for decades. But using the technical standard of information technology and a centralized database now it is possible to reach quick-win effects in implementing research results on the one hand and actual experiences on the other hand.

The flash induced combustion of Sewell and Pittsburgh coals was studied in air and in oxygen. The primary decomposition and combustion processes occur within the first 300 ~sec in oxygen and slightly later in air. Strong absorption spectra of CN and OH are indicative of the decomposition and combustion processes, respectively. Kinetic spectroscopy and combustion product analyses indicate that only about 35% of the coal dust is consumed in the explosive combustion which takes place in several (1-5) distinct but similar steps. The combustion-modifying effects of (NH4)2HP04, NH4H2P04, KHC03 and Rock Dust were studied in the 1-20 wt % range in coal dust flash com-busted in air and oxygen. The study reported herein shows Rock Dust to be the most efficient coal combustion inhibitor. KHC03 is the least effective agent, with the phosphate salts showing marginal effectiveness.

Very few cases of Cast Blasting use in phosphate mining are reported. However, in open-cast coal mining, Cast Blasting is a common practice. And yet, the geological structure of both types of deposits is similar. Accordingly, advantages for phosphate open-cast mines are manifest, especially as future conditions of phosphate deposits fit quite well with the approach.
