Many policy issues facing the mining industry and affected communities are at a level of complexity that they can be called ‘wicked’ problems. The term ‘wicked’ in this context is used, not in the sense of iniquity, but rather as social and economic issues highly resistant to resolution. For the resource extraction sector and affected communities there are an array of challenges embedded in the industry’s production and profit paradigm, the remoteness of mineral reserves and affected communities’ expectations of economic benefit and a positive legacy. The mining industry as a whole is dominated by economic, political, legislative and market structures that influence and constrain interactions between mine operations and local communities. For communities, with particular reference to regional Western Australia, intractable problems include the uncertainty of, yet increasing dependence on, a mining economy. Questionable outcomes for local communities include the limited realisation of local employment and business development benefits, and low overall outcomes or low multiplier effects. ‘Wicked’ problems, according to the literature, are best addressed via collaboration. In the mid-west region of WA, with mining and infrastructure construction underway, alliances have formed between mining companies, the major port and rail infrastructure project (Oakajee Port and Rail) and regional and local governance stakeholders. The major impetus for these affiliations is to expedite planning and associated infrastructure development taking into account the lessons from other mineral-led regions. What has resulted is an array of innovative approaches to stubborn problems including planning well in advance of full-scale mining; regionally coordinated procurement; ‘mine ready’ local businesses; and strategic investments in social infrastructure; including community trust funds paid in advance of project delivery. This paper examines these innovative approaches/alliances and assesses their effectiveness in addressing long standing mining/community dilemmas.

Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

LET'S imagine we are at the Grand L Coulee Dam, where daily 15,000 barrels of low-heat Portland cement and 27,000 tons of processed aggregate in various sizes are mixed to produce 30,000 tons of concrete. Inspect the autographic records which show for each 4-cu-yd. mixer batch of concrete the weights of its constituent materials including its several sizes of aggregate, cement, and water, and which also show the period of mixing and the consistency of the mix. Watch the inspectors sample and test the aggregate for gradation and moisture content of sand, and sample the concrete for homogeneity. Watch the huge buckets deposit the concrete in the forms. It looks too dry to handle, but the concrete vibrators make it melt away. Just enough vibration fully to com- pact the mass, but not enough to produce segregation of the materials; the inspector says when. See the sprinkler system covering all hardening concrete with a spray so that it may not thirst for water. Watch the cleaning of the top of an old lift preparatory to placing a new lift; the sand blasting; the blow-down; the mop-up; the minute inspection.

"This document compares the systems of coal classification described under ASTM standards used in Canada to GB standards used in China. A preliminary connection of metallurgical coal classes was set up between the two classifications. In GB classification system, there are nine metallurgical coal groups, namely PS, SM, JM, FM, ½ ZN, RN, 1/3 JM, and QM used in coal blending for coke production. PS coal is almost equivalent to the Low Volatile Bituminous coal; SM, JM, and FM coal groups fall into Low to Medium Volatile Bituminous range; ½ ZN, RN, 1/3 JM, and QM are equivalent to bituminous coal with medium to high volatile matters; QF contains higher volatile bituminous coal compared with High Volatile Bituminous coal. The caking properties commonly used in respective country are also compared in this document. These properties include free swelling index (FSI) and maximum fluidity used in Canada, as well as caking index (GR.I.), and the maximum plastic layer thickness (Y) mainly employed in China. It has been observed that the log of the maximum fluidity has a stronger correlation with the caking index than the Y values. Metallurgical coal processing strategy and typical coking coal product qualities are briefly discussed in the last section of this paper. Currently there is a trend to use heavy medium cyclone in both countries. In Canada the conventional two-product cyclone technology is the preferred practice; whereas in China the three-product heavy medium cyclone arrangement is widely used.INTRODUCTION Coal can be simply classified by applications into two categories: i) thermal coal used to provide heat energy in combustion, and ii) metallurgical coal which is converted to coke, in a carbonization process, and used mainly in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal contains even higher heating values than thermal coal. In addition, it presents unique plastic properties during carbonization which in turn produces a porous solid, high in carbon referred to as coke. Coke is one of the most important raw materials in the iron and steel industry."

Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites that contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of post- magmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action of residual peg- matitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw material for ceramic and chemical industries. With the discovery of the Searles Lake deposits, brines became new sources of lithium, and, today, two brine deposits satisfy nearly one-half of the free world demand for lithium chemicals. Indeed, lithium production from pegmatites has been superseded by brines sources. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, NV, have been exploited since 1964 by Cyprus Foote Mineral Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. In Chile, Sociedad Chilena de Litio Ltda., an affiliate of Cyprus Minerals Company, is now producing lithium carbonate from the brines of the Salar de Atacama. Recently identified brine deposits suggest that these may well become the prime sources of lithium chemicals. In Bolivia, the government is negotiating the rights to exploit the brines of the Salar de Uyuni. The Salar del Hombre Muerto in Argentina is being evaluated as a future center of chemical production. The brines of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the Smackover Formation, and the Imperial Valley geothermal field have been defined as important resources of lithium. In Tibet, high concentrations of lithium have been reported in several saline lakes. In the People's Republic of China, lithium may be produced from the brines of the Dabusan playa in the Qinghai Basin. The 1950s saw a great number of lithium companies develop. However, following the termination of the Atomic Energy Commission purchase program in 1959, several companies, such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp., were forced to close their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminumpotlines), the lithium industry grew steadily. With the potential application of lithium metal in batteries, nuclear reactors, and fuel cells, a steady growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Presently identified reserves and production capacity are sufficient to satisfy the conventional market growth of lithium.

Methane (CH4) present in coal seams, generally known as Coalbed Methane (CBM), Coal Mine Methane (CMM) or Coal Seam Gas (CSG), is a major energy source, as it is the primary constituent of natural gas. At the same time, released methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) and a major safety hazard in underground mining operations. Therefore, a considerable effort has been undertaken to develop coal bed methane extraction and utilization technologies that can achieve both environmental and safety benefits. Countries with significant coal reserves and gassy seams, i.e., USA, Australia, Canada, China, India, Poland and Germany have developed mature methodologies and practices to extract, before and during mining, and utilize significant amounts of methane from coal seams. Nevertheless, on a global scale, methane recovery remains untested and many technical and economic challenges require urgent attention. The research presented in this paper, sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is focused on the Zonguldak Basin, the only hard coal region in Turkey. The basin is known to contain very gassy coal seams and consists of three major regions: Armutcuk, Zonguldak and Amasra. Among the three, the Amasra coalfield is considered as the most favorable for CBM recovery, as it comprises of deeper coal seams and where a private company, Hema Enerji A.S. (Hema) is already developing coalbed methane production facilities. This study aims at developing a reservoir model to predict the potential CBM recovery from the CBM-2 well, the only producing CBM well drilled by HEMA Enerji A.S in the Amasra coalfield. History matching was utilized to model the 15-day production data and uncertainty analysis was performed to estimate the optimum values for the reservoir parameters. The produced model yielded an average production rate of 143 m3/day for 10 years. The total amount of CH4 to be produced during this period was 0.53 million m3. Furthermore, the total amount of GHG to be avoided was estimated at 6585 tCO2e.

During calendar year 1972, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in some 20 major areas of research for the development of new and improved efficient methods of conservation and utilization for petroleum and natural gas, oil shale, and coal. Made up of numerous projects described in this report, the program was carried out through research performed at research centers and laboratories in the field supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Department of the Interior. Based un this research, 186 technical reports were published by the Bureau or others, and numerous other reports were prepared for Federal agencies, State agencies, and organizations engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

The International Mineral Valuation (IMVAL) Committee, founded in 2012, develops strategies for conducting mineral valuations. These strategies have been developed into a mineral asset valuation template called the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template and is part of IMVAL's work to establish consistent international standards for mineral property valuation and reporting. This template is a living document that is updated from time to time and is based on three core values or pillars (Fundamental Principles): Competence, Materiality, and Transparency. Objectivity, Independence, and Reasonableness may be applied as required by national codes or standards. The Template harmonizes international standards for valuation of mineral assets as real property and represents a consensus of current good practices. It is not a stand-alone reporting code and does not supersede existing national reporting standards. The Template deals with mineral-property valuation as distinct from mineral-project evaluation. INTRODUCTION In his 1989 book, “The New Realities”, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, California, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized.” (p. 209) The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze, and interpret data that are material to a mineral valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality, and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (“minerals valuation”, “mineral-property valuation”). The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (“IMVAL Template”, IMVAL”, “Template”), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the Value of a Mineral Property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the Valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated Value (the act of valuing).” (p. 14) Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The Template deals with Valuation, which is distinct from Evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that Valuation addresses the estimation of value of a Mineral Property, whereas Evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a Mineral Property for an investment decision.” (p. 2)

"This paper reviews the Falconbridge- SMRQ’s Raglan project in northern Quebec and the process that was used in developing its current long-term mine plan. Challenges were many and not only limited to the longevity of the project, numerous ore deposits (both underground and open pit), and a 40 km property strike length. As a result of its remote northern location, other factors such as progressive reclamation, leachable mine waste, water treatment, and waste management were also part of the plan. A combination of modern planning tools were used to formulate the plan including DataMine, Mine 2-4D, AutoMod Simulation, and an Excel-based financial spreadsheet to bring the total plan together. The focus of the paper is to show the complexity of modern mine planning and associated economic modelling of mine processes. IntroductionThe Raglan project is located 1660 km directly north of Quebec at the northern tip of the Quebec Peninsula in Nunavik. The main property is 40 km in length stretching from the Donaldson airport area at the eastern edge of the property to East Lake at the western edge. The Deception Bay port is 90 km north of the main complex/mill situated at Katinniq which lies approximately in the middle of the property (Fig. 1). The mine processes 1 000 000 tpy of ore from both open pit and underground sources. The mill is forecasted this year to produce more than 150 000 t of concentrate grading more than 18% nickel. All personnel and critical cargo are transported to the site via a company-leased 737 jet from Rouyn-Noranda where the main administration office is located. The majority of cargo is shipped to the site via Deception Bay from Quebec and on the return trip, nickel concentrate is shipped back. From Quebec, the nickel concentrate is sent by rail to the Falconbridge smelter in Sudbury and on the reverse rail haul, nickel matte from the smelter is sent to Norway via Quebec."

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously (Snyder et al., 2016).External contracts are broadly classified by the following areas:• Communications and tracking.• Emergency response.o Self-escape and breathing air supply.o Refuge alternatives.o Escape and rescue.• Equipment safety.• Fires and explosions.• Ground control.• Mine environmental systems (mine ventilation and atmospheric monitoring).• Worker/workplace health and safety.Contracts are issued under a request for proposal (RFP), through a broad agency announcement (BAA) or under an interagency agreement (IAA). An RFP solicitation includes a specific problem description and a well-defined scope of work to guide the offeror in preparing a bid to conduct the research. Under the BAA several problem areas are described and the offeror develops the scope of work and deliverables for the proposed research. An IAA is very similar to an RFP except it is a contract between two federal government agencies."

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

THIS-report gives results of in investigation of the carbonizing properties of 18 coals, including 2 from Alaska, 12 from British Columbia, 3 from Washington, and 1 from Utah. Each coal was carbonized in the standard 13-inch Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) retort at 900° C. Plastic properties were determined by the Gieseler and Davis methods, and agglutinating and free-swelling properties were determined by standard methods. Expanding properties were measured in the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. From the results of the tests on these single coals, three coals from the Crowsnest area in British Columbia, representing Elk River Nos. 4, 9, and 10, were selected for blending with the Utah coal, which was from the Lower Sunnyside bed, Horse Canyon mine, Emery County. Lower Sunnyside also was blended with Wilkeson -Nos. 2 and 3 (Washington) coals, Pocahontas No. 3 from McDowell County, W. Va., and the Oklahoma low-volatile coal used in the blend carbonized at, the Provo, (Utah) coke plant at the time this investigation was started. Most of the blends contained 3 percent hard pitch, which is the proportion used at the Provo plant. The blends were also carbonized in 13-inch BM AGA retorts at 900° C. High-volatile B coal from the No. 3 bed, Evan-Jones mine, Lower Matanuska, Valley, Alaska, yielded poorly fused coke or char. M-bed coal from the Chickaloon mine, Upper Matanuska. Valley, Alaska, ranked as medium-volatile bituminous and coked strongly. It expanded 39.6 percent in the sole-heated oven at a. charge density of 55.5 pounds per cubic foot..

Hargraves (1983) has reviewed the phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas with special attention to Australian occurrences. The purpose of this discussion is to highlight some problems and omissions in his review that reflect particularly on the authors' structural geological investigations of outburst-prone coal seams.It is surprising to find that much of the authors' reported work has either been glossed over or the results distorted by Hargraves (1983) and it is, therefore, important to clarify the contribution that structural analysis of coal seams can make.For many years it has been known that faults provided preferred loci for gas outbursts (for example, Briggs 1920-21) but the roie that faults played in outburstprone seams was unclear. The present authors reviewed the association of faults and outbursts drawing upon local investigations and the world-wide literature (Shepherd et aI., 1981), and discussed some wideranging aspects that result from the high coincidence of faults and outburst sites. Without repeating large segments of this article the authors will discuss four aspects of coal seam faulting and fracturing.

"This paper reviews the evolving Ontario mining regime for mining industry-Aboriginal engagement and its apparent alignment with court decisions, domestic law, emerging international norms, mining industry rules, and mining firm-Aboriginal agreements, drawing on publicly available commentary from government officials, the private sector, and Indigenous communities. The social license to operate (SLO) began as a metaphor for the ability of communities to stop mining projects. Soon people began to speak of levels of social license and the ability of communities to raise costs without completely stopping exploration or mining activities. Today the concept has spread to other industries and is evolving towards becoming a general management perspective on the socio-political rights and responsibilities of the corporation. The business case underpinning the SLO perspective on management is the need to assess and manage socio-political risk. For mining companies, socio-political risk has been steadily rising for several reasons, including the efforts of non-government organisations (NGOs) to pre-empt government policy options; the entry of mining companies into jurisdictions weak in the rule of law; and the weakness of global economic and financial regulation. In this perilous world beyond the comfort zone of effective government, mining companies must build their own socio-political stability by engaging directly with stakeholders to develop a strong SLO. In order to become a practical management perspective, the SLO needs to be measurable, which amounts to measuring the socio-political risks and opportunities presented by stakeholders. We present the results of efforts since 2009 to develop a globally reliable and valid measurement tool at the project and industry levels, validated in studies in Australia, Bolivia, Mexico and the USA. A factor analysis suggested four factors that mine management can address to raise their SLO level. The most chronically neglected factor involves the political right of the corporation to foster more equitable social contracts locally and regionally in both developed and developing countries. The Mathews et al (1981) stability graph was developed to provide guidance in the determination of stope sizes to control dilution in bulk mining of large orebodies. Longhole and sublevel open stoping (LHOS and SLOS) are the lower end in scale of underground mass mining with panel and block caving (PBC) at the higher end. Currently, the stability states of stopes in the stability graph are described qualitatively as stable, unstable or cave. The alternative quantitative option to the qualitative stability graph is the Equivalent Linear Overbreak Slough (ELOS) stability graph. The ELOS stability graph only applies to narrow vein orebodies. It is easy for the Mathews et al (1981) and the ELOS stability graphs to be applied outside the limits of their databases. What is currently referred to as ‘stable’ in the present stability graphs has diverse interpretations at different mines depending on their acceptable dilution values. In 2014, a research program was conceptually conceived at the UNSW Australia School of Mining Engineering to develop a quantitative dilution-based stability graph independent of orebody width to address some industry concerns on the use of the stability graphs. A dilution-based stability graph provides the mining engineer the flexibility to determine open stope sizes based on what dilution amounts are acceptable. The graph also unifies both the Mathews et al (1981) and ELOS stability graphs for wide and narrow vein orebodies, thus, eliminating their potential misapplications. To date, the concept is proven with case studies from metalliferous underground mining operations located across Australia. This paper presents the dilution-based stability graph concept, the initial results and future plans to account for other critical factors and increase confidence in its application with the addition of more data outside Australia.CITATION:Suorineni, F T, Papaioanou, A, Baird, L and Hines, D, 2016. The CIM Mineral Exploration Best Practice Guidelines (the Exploration Guidelines) have been prepared to assist professional geoscientists and engineers to conduct consistently high-quality work in order to maintain public confidence. The Exploration Guidelines are meant to assist professional geoscientists and exploration practitioners in planning, supervising, and executing exploration programs. In Canada, there are generally two types of public resource reporting: “Disclosure”, as defined by NI 43-101, is the reporting of technical information to the public and market participants for securities legislation purposes where a Qualified Person (QP) must be involved, and reporting of exploration information for governmental agencies to support obligations under laws including the Mining Acts of each of the Provinces and Territories. The Exploration Guidelines are also relevant where the results will not be publicly reported but are intended for internal company use. While this document is intended as guidance for work conducted or supervised by geoscientists in Canada, many of the practices described herein can be adapted to mineral exploration activities in other countries. The Exploration Guidelines are not intended to inhibit original thinking, or to prevent the application of new approaches that may develop into fundamental components of successful mineral exploration programs. Rather than provide prescriptive solutions to specific issues, they include general guidelines for current professional practice and to demonstrate and defend the merits of new methods. These guidelines do not preclude individuals and companies from developing more detailed guidelines specific to their own requirements. The initial version of the Exploration Guidelines was prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Exploration Best Practices Committee and adopted by CIM Council on August 20, 2000. On January 9, 2018, CIM Council formed a new committee, the Mineral Resources and Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee) with a mandate to, among other things, update the Exploration Best Practice Guidelines. This work shall consist of furnishing and driving foundation piles of the type and dimensions designated on the plans or in the special provisions including cutting off or building up foundation piles when required. This specification also covers providing test piles and performing loading tests. Piling shall conform to and be installed in accordance with these specifications, and at the location, and to the elevation, penetration and bearing capacity shown on the plans or as directed by the Engineer. Except when test piles are required, the Contractor shall furnish the piles in accordance with the dimensions shown on the plans or special provisions. When test piles are required, the pile lengths shown on the plans are for estimating purposes only and the actual lengths to be furnished for production piles will be determined by the Engineer after the test piles have been driven. The lengths given in the Engineer's order list will include only the lengths anticipated for use in the completed structure. The Contractor shall, with-out added compensation, increase the lengths shown or ordered to provide for fresh heading and for such additional length as may be necessary to suit his method of operation.

"Coal bearing rocks are low in strength and have geological discontinuities and moisture sensitivity. Roof and rib falls have been a major cause of fatalities in underground coal mines. Mine engineers design ground control plans for regulatory approvals. A number of tools are available from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to design and assess these plans. Quite often there is not enough geotechnical input information available and databases are used. The Appalachian coalfields have extensive scientific studies to provide reliable regional inputs. Coal mines in the western United States and Canada have different geological and geotechnical conditions, and less available data. Use of inappropriate inputs in the tools like Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability, Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability, and Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems may result in unsafe designs or over conservative designs. The tools are convenient but thorough understanding of the inputs, calibration with local test results, and operating experience are important for effective designs. The current paper contains examples of difficulties faced during mine planning using the above tools. INTRODUCTION Sedimentary rocks hosting coal are low in strength. Scientific studies have placed the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), triaxial strength, tensile strength, and shear strength of sandstone, shale, siltstone, and claystone in lower range of strength among engineering materials (1). Coal bearing rocks are most often weakened by the presence of faults, folds, slickensides, bedding planes, fractures, and other geological discontinuities. The host rocks and coal are often moisture sensitive. The geological discontinuities allow water to enter the strata from surface and underground sources. This combination of low strength, structural weakness, and presence of water results in difficult ground control situations for the coal mines. Roof (2) and rib falls have been a major cause of fatalities in the U.S. coal mines. Modern underground coal mines necessitate wide entries to accommodate large production equipment. The gate roads, section entries, and the mains entries of a highly productive coal mine are as wide as twenty feet (6.1 m). The actual intersection width is nearly thirty feet (9.1 m). Adequate ground control is a key to maintain safe production in such mines. Mine engineers and their consultants routinely submit ground control plans to the regulatory authorities. While working out the necessary roof control system the mine engineers are required to demonstrate the adequacy of the proposed system. There are multiple ways to demonstrate this. Some engineers use traditional load calculation approach of roof bolts (3). Some engineers use numerical methods. Yet a large number of professionals resort to a suite of ground control design software offered by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) commonly referred to as “NIOSH Ground Control Toolbar.” These software tools are free and easy to download from NIOSH website. The software included in this package are: Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS), Analysis of Horizontal Stress Effects in Mining (AHSM), Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability - Highwall Mining (ARMPS-HWM). These tools are relatively simple to install and use in planning and designing coal mines and prospective coal mines. They accept a number of geotechnical inputs which are collected from either an existing mining operation or from exploratory boreholes. In the absence of necessary input parameters, the programs use default values which are drawn from databases of geotechnical properties built by NIOSH."
