Stress has a significant effect on the stability of pillars. In order to get an accurate picture of pillar stability, one needs information not only on the primary Stress distribution but also on all the Subsequent Stress changes as time passes. Sonic methods are some of the fastest, most economical and least destructive means of stress prediction. The wave propagation velocity has long been applied to the investigation of the upper mantle and crust stress. Recently, it has also been applied to the prediction of rock bursts and to mine site investigations. Another parameter for investigating stresses in rocks is the attenuation coefficient. Attenuation has been observed to be more sensitive to stress changes than wave velocity; however, the measurement of attenuation is more difficult than that of wave velocity. In this paper, the mechanism of sonic attenuation in rock is reviewed. Both the velocity and the attenuation of sound waves in five different rock types under various stress fields were examined in the laboratory. It was found that for a specific rock type the relationship between the velocity ratio and stress, as well as that between the attenuation coefficient ratio and stress, can be expressed by simplified second order polynomial equations.Research showed the attenuation coefficient to be more sensitive to stress change than the velocity ratio. A field investigation method was proposed using a Schmidt hammer as a repeatable energy source. Initial trials appeared to show that monitoring by the wave attenuation method gave more repeatable data than monitoring wave velocity.

The lead-acid battery recycling is a major industrial activity (more than four million tonnes recycled lead per year) that generates large amounts of toxic wastes such as lead slag, mattes and acidic sludge, besides airborne emissions. This is a waste-producer industry that needs a definitive solution to avoid its negative environmental impact and getting a sustainable lead production. That is the principal target of the CLEANLEAD technology, which properly combines both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical routes aiming to get zero-waste production, reducing the use of energy and resources in all phases of battery reprocessing, and consequently, greatly decreasing the operating cost. There will be no toxic emissions to land, water or air, and obtained products are pure lead metal or pure lead oxide, and commercial gypsum instead of waste sludge.

Due to their high amount of stored energy, explosives have been the cause of many serious injuries and fatalities over the last centuries. Despite safety advances and awareness in the last decades, injuries and fatalities continue to occur at mining operations due to blasting. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, from 1978 to 2001, blasting incidents claimed 106 lives and were responsible for over 1000 injuries in mines in the US. The main causes of incidents found today are flyrock, blast area security and premature detonations. The concerted efforts of the mining and explosives industries and labour and government agencies have greatly improved the safety record of blasting in mines.

"The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. This is evidenced by a decline in the number of skilled teams, who are now centred in fewer locations. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.The industry that supports operations and new projects is suffering a rapid decline in the currently severely curtailed capital investment environment. Other features are an aging and retiring ‘Baby Boomer’ generation, coupled with a low uptake of new graduates and the uncertainty in predicting future capital expenditure programs and requirements. Combine this with a reluctance of cash-poor operations to modernise and adapt in an environment of low metal prices, and there is a real uncertainty in how service providers will meet industry needs as they evolve.Trends amongst service providers will be put forward as well as developing options and alternatives. These embrace a whole gamut of agile alternatives in the areas of partnering, alliances, commercial and shared risk models and mutual innovations. These will be discussed with some case studies and suggested approaches.Particular emphasis will be upon brownfield expansions and upgrades which have emerged recently as a preferred lower capital and focused way to achieve best practical outcome at lowest cost. There are a number of specific features of such brownfields projects including the requirement for very close cooperation between the execution team, operators, maintenance and suppliers and a maximum usage of site resources and ingenuity. Often, required investment hurdle rates are high, downtime allowed is minimal and site resources usage is maximised. This requires mutual trust, good planning and high health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) standards and practice. In many ways the practices and skills needed are the exact opposite of the historical ‘big greenfields’ project with which the industry has been geared for more recently.Another developing area has been with innovative commercial models and practices. These have been as a direct result of the more challenging investment criteria being adopted and the relative hunger of service providers. It has become more common to look at these commercial/costing alternatives very early in the project cycle as an essential project tool and not just as a possible option. These commercial solutions cover such alternatives as leasing and rental, deferred payments, build–own–operate–transfer (BOOT) and build–own–operate (BOO), whole-of-mine preferred spares and maintenance terms, and aggressive performance targets with real assurance penalties. Sedimentary deposits of pluvial Lake Bonneville are an important source of sand and gravel suitable for aggregate and construction in Utah. Data on Lake Bonneville basin sand and gravel deposit thickness, volume, grain size, percent of fines, and durability were statistically analyzed to detect variations associated with geologic domains, geographic location, Lake Bonneville shorelines, and sand and gravel deposit type, and to construct quantitative deposit models. Analysis showed several trends; (1) sand and gravel in younger shorelines was slightly more durable and the deposits considerably larger in volume, (2) younger shore- lines are also more likely to contain more than one genetic deposit type, (3) the volume of terrace deposits is larger than beach deposits, (4) terraces and beaches are generally thicker than spits and bars, (5) the northern part of the Bonneville Basin contains slightly more durable sand and gravel than the southern part of the basin and is more likely to contain deposits composed of more than one genetic deposit type, aid (6) the Wasatch domain deposits are composed of more than one genetic deposit type more often than deposits of the Basin and Range domain. Three additional conclusions with immediate economic significance are; (1) the median sand and gravel deposit in the Wasatch domain, 360,000 m3 (275,000 yd3), is three times larger than that of the Basin and Range domain (120,000 m3 [90,000 yd3]), (2) the median deposit thickness in the Wasatch domain, 5.8 m (19.0 ft), is nearly twice that of the Basin and Range domain (3 m [lo ft]), and (3) the Wasatch domain also contains slightly larger diameter gravel. These three conclusions are significant because the trend for sand and gravel development in the Bonneville Basin is to move from the Wasatch domain to the Basin and Range domain. Smaller, thinner deposits with smaller diameter gravel will require more surface area to mine than would have been necessary in the Wasatch domain. The result is a higher cost for sand and gravel in construction projects in the Salt Lake City area, especially since the gravel must also be hauled farther.

"Predicting the ground response for tunnels in weak shales remains challenging. Predicting the ground response is challenged by difficulties in characterising the material, and our ability to predict deformations that are driven by coupled hydromechanical processes, when this material yields. The techniques that are used for characterizing weak shales are reviewed, and three case histories are examined that demonstrate the behaviour of these weak rocks during tunnelling. A general framework is provided for assessing the squeezing potential for weak shales.1 INTRODUCTIONGeologically, shale is an argillaceous fine-grained sedimentary rock that forms from the compaction of silt and clay-size mineral particles commonly referred to as ""mud"". Because of this grain size, the material is generically classed as Mudstone (Figure 1). Shale is distinguished from other mudstones because it is made up of many thin layers (laminated) and readily splits into thin pieces along the laminations (fissile). While the geological classification of shale appears straightforward, the classification for engineering purposes is often confusing. Underwood (l967) provided the first description of shale that made the distinction between “soil-like” compaction shales and “rock-like ""cemented"" shales. He coined the term ‘clay shale’ to capture the characteristics of hard clay yet recognizing its origin as a shale. In this paper weak shale is synonymous with clay shale and have strengths that typically range from R1 to R2 (1 to 25 MPa). Characterising these materials draws on methods from both soil and rock mechanics."

U.S. producers for more than 5 months have priced 99.5 percent primary aluminum ingot at 486 per pound. Sales by independent dealers in this same period reportedly declined by 0.5$-2.5$ to 43.50- 44.56 per pound. CADMIUM: U.S. producer-published cadmium prices for the last 5 months have been at $3 per pound. Dealer quotes in the same period fell by almost 504 and ranged from $2.45 to $2.55 per pound.

Pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations have been in commercial use at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery of Sherritt International Corporation for fifty years. This paper traces the history of Sherritt from its origins in northern Manitoba, and the development of the first hydrometallurgical nickel-cobalt refinery in 1954, utilizing pressure hydrometallurgy, to the modern day refinery. Sherritt's involvement with pressure hydrometallurgy during the past 50 years has included the operation of the refinery, the development and licensing of technology, incorporating pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations, to more than 30 companies worldwide, the joint venture at Moa, Cuba involving both leaching and precipitation at elevated temperature and pressure, and the production of specialty metal powders. Developments in each of these areas are reviewed.

China?s remarkable levels of economic growth during the past three decades have lifted almost 300 million people out of poverty. This amazing achievement has placed an increasing demand on energy and minerals, especially coal, which supplies 68.7 percent of China?s energy (June 2011). It is estimated that China mined more than 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of coal in 2010, three times as much when compared to merely 10 years earlier. Such an impressive achievement does not come without major costs ?? including concerns with mine safety and an increasing number of occupational illnesses due to fast growth. This article reports on one of the major safety concerns in China?s coal mining, dust and dust control practices, and known cases of caol worker?s pneumoconiosis affiliated with prolonged exposure to excessive coal dusts. The exact size of China?s mining industry is not known, but it is estimated the coal industry is at least five-million people strong, and the metal and nonmetals industry probably employs another three million people. To meet increasing energy demand, China mined more than 3.1 Gt (3.4 billion st) of coal in 2010 from its 15,000 plus coal operations1, most of which are small- to medium-sized operations with annual coal productions ranging from a few thousand tons to 300 kt (330,000 st). These small coal operations are typically in remote areas, inadequately engineered, poorly ventilated and still using rudimentary drilling and blasting mining methods employing antiquated mining equipment and, presenting safety concerns, i.e., methane and dust explosions.

En el pasado, la minera superficial a tajo abierto surgió para obtener principalmente materiales no metálicos de construcción, alcanzando su auge a partir de las últimas décadas del siglo pasado. Sin embargo, existieron algunos obstáculos en el desarrollo de su mecanización y tecnología que posteriormente fueron mejoradas. Posteriormente, existe una competencia por desarrollar equipos mecánicos de mayor capacidad y operación, como un interés por el advenimiento de nuevas tecnologías y uso de la investigación. Finalmente, el panorama sobre el futuro del minado a cielo abierto, presenta condiciones en las que no se asume nuevos progresos mecánicos ni mayores espectativas que en el pasado.

"'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. Siendo la veta principal San Cristóbal, una de las estructuras que atraviesan el Anticlinal Chumpe en la provincia de Yauli, su explotación ha sido limitada a las rocas volcánicas y filitas en el flanco sur-oeste del anticlinal. Por tal motivo, el texto señala que el análisis de la distribución de los metales y minerales dentro de la veta, revela un zoneamiento horizontal bien definido, que es compatible con el origen de las soluciones hidrotermales en el centro del anticlinal. Asimismo, este estudio cuantitativo determina las características de las partes ricas de la veta, trazando líneas de contornos de los cuatro tipos de metal en secciones longitudinales, como los controles de la distribución de metal y relaciona las áreas ricas de la veta con su medio geológico. De otro lado, en San Cristóbal, la distribución del metal presenta una característica zonal donde la paragénesis y el zoneamiento están íntimamente relacionados. Concluyéndose que con la aplicación de los resultados de este estudio, se permitirá una mejor exploración y desarrollo de las áreas ricas de la Veta Principal San Cristóbal y se proporcionará una guía útil para la exploración y desarrollo de vetas paralelas en esta área.

During the 14 years since the last update to National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101), there have been many discussions between Canadian regulators and mining companies about mining disclosure deficiencies that arise from regulatory reviews. These discussions are not made public, and as a result, there has been some drift in how NI 43-101 is interpreted by the regulators, which in turn creates uncertainty for the mining companies trying to comply with the instrument. To reduce uncertainty in mining disclosure requirements, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) has issued a notice to update the current NI 43-101 with a streamlined instrument and form. Changes and benefits are listed in the “CSA Notice and Request for Comment — Proposed Repeal and Replacement of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects,” which is available on the Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia Securities Commission websites. The public has been invited to comment, with the comment period ending on Oct. 10, 2025. The 43-101 Companion Policy (43-101 CP) provides an update to the views of the regulators on how the CSA staff interpret and apply certain provisions of the instrument. Collectively, some of the changes to NI 43-101, the form and 43-101 CP are likely to increase the financial and other burdens on the mining companies responsible for the disclosure, and the qualified persons (QPs) who create the disclosure. In other instances, there are missed opportunities to reduce the burden on mining companies and QPs without impacting the markets.

"Mining has been a source of controversy for at least 500 years. “Since there has always been the greatest disagreement amongst men concerning metals and mining, some praising, others utterly condemning them…” (Agricola, 1556). In 2016, it is widely recognized that mineral resources and reserves must give due regard to the social license in order to operate.“Most commonly, the social license to operate (SLO) is understood to refer to ‘the ongoing acceptance and approval of a [project] by local community members and other stakeholders that can affect its profitability’ (Moffat, 2014).” “Social License to Operate has gained traction, in part, because it is also a concept which – while remaining poorly, technically defined – is generally easily and widely understood by community stakeholders (Bice, 2014).”A generation ago we learned that mining is based on a stable platform supported by three pillars, geology, mining and metallurgy. The three-legged stool is a very stable structure (Fig. 1).In 2016, it seems that we have added some other legs to the stool (Fig 2). The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) addresses “social, and governmental factors…” (JORC 2012), and refers specifically to social license in Section 4 of the Report Template “Estimation and Reporting of Ore Reserves.”The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Guidelines refer to “environmental, legal and social data…(CIM 2003).”Compared to these, the 2014 SME Guide is positively verbose stating “a discussion of any potential social or community related requirements and plans for the project and the status of any negotiations or agreements with local communities,” (SME 2014) although in all cases the scope of this disclosure is left at the discretion of the competent person.When there are more than three legs on the stool, it is imperative that all legs be constructed exactly to the design. Any one or more legs that are out of alignment will cause the stool to wobble.Engineers are trained to create designs to meet specifications. Loads can be estimated, forces calculated and cost studies completed that will lead to, not only a stable design, but the most efficient design that meets the specifications."

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

Some project managers accept unsatisfactory economic evaluation modelling because they are unaware of what constitutes good practice. They tend to leave it to the evaluation specialist or others to decide. The AusIMM has published on its website a draft set of guidelines for technical economic evaluation which will allow these project managers to take control and demand worldÆs best practices.The style of the guidelines is described and the source of a worked spreadsheet example in Excel is given.Economic evaluation in project management is described. A simple test for the acceptance or rejection of evaluation work is offered. The nature of modelling and evaluation in each of the three study phases of concept, prefeasibility and final feasibility are described. Suggestions on the selection of specialists for each phase are given. The three levels of evaluation thinking are described, namely, modelling, valuation and evaluation. Finally the meaning of æfinancial analysisÆ is explained.The conclusion is that æthe role of an economic evaluation specialist is to create models and evaluations for the whole project team to readily understand and use: it is not to create models for his/her own useÆ.CITATION:Card, P, 2012. Surprisingly, real gross national product (GNP) surged at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.3% for the first quarter of 1987 according to preliminary estimates made by the Department of Commerce, the highest rate in 3 yr and significantly above the revised fourth quarter 1986 rate of 1.1% (table 1). The spurt, however, was caused by an unusual $59.5 billion rise in inventories, mostly cars and trucks, and there was little support from other sectors of the economy. Motor vehicle inventories rose as consumers continued to tighten their purse strings--consumer spending declined 0.4% for the second quarter in a row. Nonresidential and residential fixed investment and government purchases of goods and services were also down from the previous quarter. The increasing cost of energy was the major factor in the jump to 3.696 in the rate of inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted price index for GNP, and rising inflation also helped put a damper on consumer spending. The underlying good news was that the trade deficit shrank for the second quarter in a row as imports declined at an annual rate of 11.1%. Also, profits in the manufacturing sector rose strongly in the fourth quarter, and for the first time in 9 quarters, the primary metal industries became profitable (table 1). If one discounts the anomalous inventory growth, the bottom line is that the economy continues to grow at close to the expected 2.5% level experienced over the past 2 yr. Of concern over the next several quarters, though, is the impact of the large over- hang of motor vehicles inventories on the economy. EMPLOYMENT The civilian unemployment rate declined to 6.636 in March after remaining at 6.7% for the previous 3 months. Employment continued to expand in February and March, although growth was significantly slower in March than in previous months. The manufacturing sector, however, lost 24,000 jobs in March after gaining 46,000 in February. Three-quarters of that gain came when striking workers at USX Corp. and Deere & CO. returned to their jobs. Employment in the manufacturing sectors of direct interest to the mineral industries has generally been increasing for at least the last quarter, while worker hours for these sectors have been on the upswing since April 1986 (figures 1 and 2).

This National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was conducted to focus future research on the most significant electrical problems in the mining industry. Data from 1,926 mine electrical accidents (including 75 fatalities) that occurred between 1990 and 1999 were studied. Coal and metalnonmetal operator- and contractor-reported data are presented. All data used in this analysis were MSHA closeout data, except 1999, which were preliminary data.

"Since milling began in 1912, the Dome mill, now part of the Porcupine Joint Venture (PJV), has been expanded several times, the most recent increasing the milling rate from 3,500 to 11,500 tonnes per day. Dome uses conventional crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration to recover free milling gold. A cyanidation/CIP process recovers the remaining gold in the gravity tails.Over the past few years, continuous gravity improvements have increased the gravity recovery from 20% to nearly 50% of the plant feed gold. This paper describes some of the factors that have contributed to this dramatic increase, and suggests how gravity recovery can be further improved. Gravity circuit availability has been improved to >98% with the implementation of a preventative maintenance program. More Knelson concentrators have been added to the circuit, and in 2002, an Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was installed to replace the shaking table. In 2003, the entire gravity circuit was audited to evaluate and quantify the circuit performance. The metallurgical and mechanical operating conditions of the gravity circuit are now well understood, and areas for further improvement are well defined.INTRODUCTIONThe Porcupine Joint Venture was formed in 2002 between Placer Dome Inc. and Kinross Gold Corporation. One of the goals of the JV was to use the milling capacity of the Dome mill to process ore from Placer Dome and Kinross mines in the Timmins Camp. The PJV Dome Mill utilizes gravity concentration, cyanide leaching and carbon in pulp gold circuits to recover gold. Gravity recovery has been used in some form at the Dome Mill for most of its existence, first using conventional jigs, these being replaced in 1993 by two Knelson Concentrators, one for each of the two grinding circuits in the Dome mill. Over the years more concentrators have been added to improve the gravity recovery, most recently in 2002 for a current total of five. Also in 2002, an Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was added to process the Knelson concentrate, replacing the shaking table."

The system can also track and monitor all known persons coming into contact with RFID enabled explosives materials and articles at the production level, at the magazine level, at the logistics level and to final use enabling a complete and real-time auditable chain-of-custody.
