Channel iron deposits (CID) consist of ferruginous chemical sediments, and are an unusual subset of Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits almost unique to the Pilbara, where they constitute around 19 per cent of the Pilbara’s iron ore exports. These deposits occupy many of the ancestral river channels of the Pilbara region, especially the Robe River palaeochannels, incising and meandering through the Precambrian banded iron formations (BIF) of the Hamersley Group and the underlying Fortescue Volcanics.This paper explores the factors underlying geochemical variation in CID, particularly the chemical properties of goethite. The selected deposits in the western Robe palaeochannel and its tributaries show little or no secondary reworking by later water tables. There is a total absence of aluminosilicate clays with all the deleterious elements such as aluminium and silica. Instead, these are associated with the goethite mineral lattice, either within or adsorbed to the cortices of pelletoids.A thickly vegetated environment, and the presence of the Maddina Volcanics as potential source rocks for these western Robe CID is offered as an explanation for relatively high aluminium in the deposits studied, and, in turn, as the reason most parts of the palaeochannel are preserved as inverted topography.CITATION:Beattie, E, Placzek, C and Blake, K, 2017. Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

The design of excavations in high displacement mining environments requires consideration of both the load and displacement capacity of the ground reinforcement and support systems. This paper is a case study on the design of point anchored rebar bolts using laboratory tests and field trials at the Ridgeway Deeps block cave. A laboratory testing program was carried out to measure the mechanical properties of the Strata Control Systems R27 Secura resin bolt which is currently being installed on the extraction and undercut level at the Ridgeway Deeps block cave. The aim was to quantify elastic, plastic and energy parameters for various bolt, mesh and plate systems. Experiments were performed on bar segments, bolt/plate systems, and bolt/plate/mesh/resin systems. The mechanical properties were calculated from tensile tests with a 500 kN Avery machine. Load-displacement data was collected from four different testing configurations. The laboratory results are compared with underground measurements and observations of bolt performance.

Results are reported of a study of the reactions occurringin the combustion of chaIcopyrite particles underconditions simulating those in the shaft of a flashsmelter.The reactions were studied using kinetic and mineralogicaltechniques. Reactions. rates above 500°C wererapid, most of the reaction taking place in less than 50ms. Final products were copper-iron ferrites with spineltype structures. Probable reaction mechanisms are discussed.

The long-term production schedule of open pit mines that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a given project relies on the proper design of phases (pushbacks) within the ultimate pit limits. There is not a phase design algorithm applied in the mining industry today that gives yearly production schedules that are optimum.The majority of phase design algorithms currently in use by the mining industry aims at grouping the blocks that fall within the ultimate pit limits into phases such that the average value of the blocks within each phase decrease as the size of the phases increase. Current phase design methods are typically based on a pit limit optimisation algorithm, originally introduced by Lerchs and Grossmann (LG) in 1965. To obtain multiple pit shells to be used for the phase design, the LG pit limit algorithm successively applied to economic block models by changing the price of the commodity or some other factor that properly parameterises the size of the pit. These modified economic block models are developed by predetermining the destination for each block in the model based on a breakeven analysis and highest economic outcome between alternative destinations. Phase designs determined by these existing algorithms may be suboptimal if a given project utilises multiple processing facilities for metal recovery and particularly if these facilities have restrictions (constraints) that require blending of attributes in the feed. To overcome these problems in obtaining phases that optimise overall production schedules, a new algorithm is developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The algorithm determines the phases of an open pit mine by taking into account multiple process options for the blocks and period by period blending requirements. This algorithm has been implemented within a software program (the software) and is being prototyped successfully in the design of improved pushbacks at a copper mine in South America and on a gold mine in Nevada. This presentation will demonstrate the shortcomings of the traditional phase design methodologies based on comparison of results coming from the new approach versus the traditional.

In this study, 23 samples of leached ash (LA) were collected from an ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station and geotechnically characterised. The samples were collected at various depths and locations within the ash pond on two separate occasions in order to account for the full variability. The LA within the ash pond at Loy Yang Power Station (LYPS) was found to vary in texture from silt to sand, depending on the location from where the sample was collected. Samples collected near the ash pond inlet discharge point, for instance, contained more than 50 per cent sand sized particles and were subsequently classified under the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as silty sand (SM). Further downstream of the inlet discharge, the LA became progressively finer and was classified accordingly as elastic silt (MH) when the sand content became less than 50 per cent. Basic geotechnical testing revealed that the LA from Loy Yang Power Station was generally acceptable as a landfill cover material. The permeability of LA, however, was generally too high for prescriptive covers, (ie resistive covers that generally rely on the impervious nature of the material to control percolation). Alternative covers, generally rely on the store/release function of a capillary or monolithic barrier to prevent percolation into the landfill. Subsequently, a material that can maintain a high water storage capacity while at the same time, readily allow infiltration and evapotranspiration is required for an alternative cover. Sandy silt and silty sand are optimal soils for alternative covers, as they do not yield water to gravity forces, but do give up most of the water in their pores when subjected to high-matric suction (Kavazanjian, 2001). The effectiveness of alternative covers is ultimately assessed using computer models, such as UNSAT-H and HYDRUS-2D, to rigorously perform water balance calculations. Prior to using a computer model to determine the highest possible percolation in the worst climatic conditions, it is necessary to select the most appropriate materials. This paper suggests a method to screen available materials for use as an alternative cover material on the basis of the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC).

Flotation recovery in geometallurgical modelling is usually predicted based on relationships developed from batch flotation testing of different ore types. These batch flotation tests are usually performed at a constant set of operating conditions and at a fixed feed grind size P80. Usually the laboratory feed grind P80 is that which is expected to be produced in the full-scale flotation circuit for that particular ore type.Flotation recovery will be a strong function of the valuable mineral particle size distribution, with lower recovery of ultra-fines due to poor flotation kinetics, optimum recovery for the intermediate sized particles and lower recovery for the coarser particles due to poorer liberation of this fraction. This valuable mineral particle size distribution is not characterised by the solids P80 parameter alone. The proportion of material in each class will also be a function of the slope of the size distribution and the degree of preferential grinding of the valuable mineral in comparison to the total mass of the ore.This paper will demonstrate (through example) how these other size distribution parameters can change with a change in grinding technology, the size and operating conditions used in a grinding unit and the characteristics of the classification technology used in conjunction with the grinding unit. Case studies will be presented that demonstrate how this can result in these parameters being very different in laboratory testing to that produced in the full-scale comminution circuit. A rule of thumb that laboratory rod milling rather than ball milling produces a size distribution most similar to that of the full-scale grinding circuit will be challenged. These differences can result in a significant change in flotation recovery. It is therefore important to consider these parameters when developing a laboratory geometallurgical program, to enable more accurate prediction of the flotation recoveries that will be achieved in the full-scale process.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E and Jankovic, A, 2013. Gold mining in Australia and globally has a long and variable history. In recent years, due to ongoing public concern over long-term environmental impacts, the mining industry globally has been moving towards a more sustainable framework, presented as the æMining, Minerals and Sustainable DevelopmentÆ (MMSD) framework at the Johannesburg Earth Summit in 2002. There are a number of fundamental issues and concerns with assessing the sustainability of mining. Firstly, long-term trends show that ore grades for almost all metals and minerals will continue to decline (some rapidly so), increasing waste rock is being produced due to the trend towards large-scale open cut mining and more complex ores are now commonly being developed. The impact of these trends on the resource intensity, or unit cost, of gold production is of major concern as it could lead to an increase in energy, water and reagent consumption and greenhouse emissions per unit gold produced. A detailed compilation of these fundamental sustainability indices for gold mining has been undertaken, and is presented with respect to indices over time, ore grade and ore throughput. A clear observation is that the resource intensity of gold mining is extremely sensitive to the ore grade, with energy, water and cyanide consumption and greenhouse emissions rising significantly as ore grade decreases. Based on the gold ore resources at operating mines and other known gold deposits, it is most likely that the average gold ore grade will continue to decline, leading to increased resource intensity and consequent environmental impacts (assuming no breakthrough new technologies occur). These findings are of major importance to understanding the sustainability of gold mining. The final judgement of the sustainability of gold mining therefore must take into account the sensitivity of the ore grade in the resource intensity of gold production.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. One such challenge was the need to build and commission the new spiral circuit in isolation from the operating plant.The aim of this paper will be to highlight some of the challenges faced in a complex brownfield project such as the ID OBP upgrade and discuss how they were managed to enable the successful commissioning of the process in early 2012.CITATION:Selvapandian E and Barr, R, 2013. The increasing depth, mechanisation and distance of working areas from surface connections places an ever greater contaminant burden on ventilation airflows. Some British Coal mines are already experiencing significant problems in providing adequate climatic conditions in the working areas and have had to introduce air conditioning. Previous work has shown that in mines of low to moderate virgin strata temperature the application of controlled district recirculation could serve to improve climatic conditions at the working area.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. The detailed mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat was first studied in 1942 (Edwards, 1943).At that time the workings did not extend far below the 750ft. level. Since then development has been extended to the 1,390ft. level, and -at the request of the management of Lake George Mines Ltd., an examination of the ore from the deeper levels has been made as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.This account is. based on that examination (Mineragraphic Rept. No. ,537, C.S.I.R.O.)GENERAL GEOLOGYThe geology of the Lake George Mines has been described briefly in The Geology of Australian Ore Deposits (1953), and in much greater detail in an unpublished report by K. Glasson (1952). The area consists of fossiliferous Upper Ordovician sediments overlain by volcanics (Kohinoor VoJcanics), and by fossiliferous Silurian sediments. The volcanies comprise a series of· flows ranging in' composition from dacite to rhyolite, with interbedded tuft's and shale lenses.The region has been strongly folded. The regional strike is from 340° to 355°, and dips are from 75°W. to 75°E, A major syncline, pitching 200 N., occupies the centre of the area. The Kohinoor Volcanic'l outcrop as two bands which represent the east and west limbs of this syncline.The Volcanks in the western limb, with whIch the orebodies are associated, are more strongly sheared than those in the eastern limb.

Land disturbed by alluvial gold mining should be restored to a capability or productivity as good as that which existed prior to disturbance.   Effective rehabilitation requires detailed planning prior to mining and must also be closely integrated with the mining operations.   The main constituents of a rehabilitation plan: description of existing site conditions, choice of final land use, establishment of final landform, water management and erosion control, soil reconstruction, revegetation and management of rehabilitated land are briefly described.

Authors have been conducting research on autonomous loading operation by wheel loader. Autonomous loading cycles has been demonstrated with real size experimental model. In V shape loading operation, travelling between scooping point and dumping point is dominant factor for cycle time of the operation. The positions of scooping point and dumping point changes with advancing the operation. In the developed system, path planning is performed at the beginning of every cycle. The path is formed by combination of curve and straight path elements. During travelling on the planned path, path following control is applied on the loader to keep position error in narrow range. Positioning of the loader is based on dead reckoning with correction by global positioning system (GPS) data. In a process of path following control, control value for steering angle is determined based on position error in lateral direction. Proposed method of path planning and position control is installed and tested in the real size experimental model. The detail and results will be described in the paper.

Since 1950 Stockton Open Cast Mine has excavated over 60 million tonnes of Brunner Coal Measures overburden sandstones and mudstones. The current operator, Solid Energy New Zealand, recognises that acidic drainage from this overburden and from historic underground mines has led to depressed pH levels and elevated levels of metals in streams draining the Stockton Plateau. These streams report to the Ngakawau River. To quantify the effects of mine site acid drainage remediation/mitigation on the lower Ngakawau River water quality, a catchment hydrogeochemical model has been field calibrated and ecotoxicology tests have been undertaken. The hydrogeochemical model indicates that pre-mining and present pH values in the lower Ngakawau River are similar but present aluminium and iron concentrations are elevated. Ecotoxicology tests have semi-quantified the critical metal concentrations and interim water quality targets to achieve ecological recovery are presented. Analyses of long-term total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity monitoring in the lower Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream indicate that TSS of 120 mg/L and turbidity of 20 NTU are exceeded for <20% per cent of the time. Hence, specific criteria to protect migratory native fish from turbid water are currently met in the Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream.

On a worldwide basis trackbound transportation is on the decline. As mining operations progress from open cast operations to underground operations, most utilise mechanised equipment. However, in South Africa hard rock mines, only a small percentage (¦10 per cent) of the production can be generated by mechanised methods and therefore trackbound mining methods will remain the dominant means to transport ore. In the Australian context there may be occasions where the nature of the orebody would dictate the use of rail transportation with the ore being transported from drawpoints by means of locomotives and hoppers. This paper focuses on horizontal rail haulage systems from the stope loading boxes to the shaft station area and will be largely based on South African experience. It is intended that this document will provide a practical guideline for mine designers and planners during the design process. The paper looks at trackbound transport systems and evaluates such items as construction and management of an underground rail haulage system. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. LKAB operates two underground iron ore mines located in the northern part of Sweden, both using sublevel caving (SLC) as the mining method. Knowledge of the mechanisms of gravity flow is important since it affects both ore recovery and waste dilution. This paper describes results from a large-scale field test carried out at the Kiruna mine with a focus on gravity flow. It is part of Work Package 2 in the I2Mine project financed by the EU. A total of ten rings were blasted. Smart Markers based on radio frequency identification technology were used to monitor the gravity flow. An accurate delineation of the isolated extraction zone requires reliable detection of all recovered Smart Markers and precise knowledge of the 3D position of the markers within the burden. It was therefore necessary to carry out borehole deviation measurements (collar, alignment and trajectory). The blast performance was monitored by high-speed filming, near-field vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements. Three-dimensional stereo images were taken from the drawpoint and the loaded bucket after each mucking cycle. Based upon that, fragmentation was assessed both in 2D and 3D. Furthermore, volumetric differences were determined at the drawpoint, which reflects the mobility of loaded material. For draw control, the Fe content is estimated by measuring weight and assuming a full bucket. The measured volume of rock in each bucket further improves this estimate. Possible flow disturbances occurring at the drawpoint were revealed by video recording. Two-dimensional laser scanning was carried out during mucking to track the position of the bucket and estimate the position and slope of the muck pile.The results from this test clearly show that the gravity flow in the large-scale sublevel cave in Kiruna mine is often of disturbed character. Standard draw occurred only in three rings and shallow draw in the remaining seven rings. In five cases, shallow draw developed towards standard draw, but occurred at rather late stages during extraction (70–125 per cent). The maximum width of the draw varied between 10 m and 13 m except for one ring (6 m). The draw reaches the cave rather early (5–25 per cent extraction) in shallow draw situations and much later (about 50 per cent) during standard draw. Waste originates from above in most cases, while more significant portions often occur at about 20–45 per cent extraction.All the results from this extensive field test are not yet fully analysed, and further field tests are planned. This paper uses a case study to demonstrate best practices techniques for predicting the contribution of gravity concentration in a gold recovery process flowsheet. The case study was selected as an example of an ore with a marginal gravity gold content, which makes the value of a gravity circuit difficult to quantify. In this instance the value of leveraging a significant knowledgebase of operating gravity circuit performance to support the decision making process was demonstrated.
