WAR undoubtedly accelerates metallurgical progress, although its most obvious effect is a tremendous waste of materials. The necessity for restrictions in normal uses of metals results in a search for substitutes or for enhanced properties that will make a limited supply last longer. An insatiable demand for more metal to be produced more quickly favors trial of new processes, new metallurgical tools, and new methods of fabrication. Greatest advance is made, of course, in practical physical and process metallurgy. Theoretical or fundamental research necessarily must take a secondary position, and is so regarded in this review. It is not that developments in theoretical physical metallurgy are lacking entirely, but, following the same trend noted in other countries as they entered war activities, attention in the U.S.A. has been shifted strongly to those developments having an immediate practical application.

Bentonite represents one of the main players in the stability of the drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution affect the physical properties of the drilling mud especially the rheological properties. Therefore, a specific particle size distribution was recommended by American Petroleum Institute (API) for use in drilling mud. To clarify the effect of individual size and size distribution, in this study, the bentonite sample was classified into different size fractions. Each size fraction was tested separately in terms of controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness, and packing density. The effect of each size fraction on the rheological properties of the suspension was correlated to the behavior of the whole particle size distribution in the bentonite sample. The results indicate that the coarser the particles, the higher the rheological properties; in this case, the API mixture is the highest. The filtration loss and cake thickness for the API mixture are lower than that of the individual size fractions due to its wider size distribution due to the filling of voids between larger particles with smaller ones, which lead to bed compaction and consequently lower fluid loss and cake thickness.

"INTRODUCTION The Lookout Mountain coal deposits were examined by J.L. Stratton, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in April and May 1943. The area investigated includes that part of southern Lookout Mountain in townships 4 to 8, south, ranges-9 to 11 east, and contains approximately 140 square miles in DeKalb and Cherokee Counties in northeastern Alabama (fig. 1.)Six coal seams having a minable thickness of 18 or more inches are represented in the area. The third seam, known locally as the Hill seam, has been correlated with the Upper Cliff No.1 seam and is referred to as such throughout this report. The preliminary investigation indicated that the Upper Cliff No. 1 seam is a low-volatile, high-grade coking coal. The work done on this project was confined principally to determining the amount and grade of coal in this seam.The only existing maps of mines in the area were one of the Lookout Fuel Co. at Lahusage, Ala. (fig. 2), and one of the Lookout Mountain Iron Co. at Battelle, Ala. (fig. 3), Consequently, to gain some knowledge of the grade and tonnage mined, surveys of the other mines were necessary. Many of them were caved, and many were filled with water, necessitating considerable preliminary work."

This paper describes the methods and equipment used by the Utah Copper Co. in constructing a vehicular tunnel at Bingham Canyon, Utah, Completion and use of this tunnel for vehicular and pedestrian traffic permitted abandonment of the long-used county highway connecting Bingham and Copperfield. Expanding- operations of the Utah Copper open-cut mine, necessitated construction of a vehicular route away from the ore body. The site Of the tunnel is well beyond ultimate nit slopes and future mining operations. The tunnel not only diverts vehicular and pedestrian traffic is but also carrier, creek water, copper water, sewage, pipe lines, and. power and telephone cables between the two communities. The dimensions of the tunnel permit one-way traffic only. Traffic-control lights have been installed. Owing to the possibility of accumulation of carbon monoxide gas from automobile exhausts, automatic gas detectors has been installed at various stations. These detectors control the operation of a large exhaust fan situated at the upper portal of the tunnel.

Commercial production of synthetic rubber in the United States became a reality in 1931 when E. I. duPont de Nemours, Inc., announced the manufacture of Duprene, a synthetic rubber made by polymerizing r chloroprene. Duprene was later improved and reintroduced as neoprene. Since 1931 other synthetic rubbers and rubberlike materials have been announced and are now produced commercially or are in the pilot-plant stage in the United States. These include Thiokol, Buna S, Perbunan, Koroseal, Vistanex, Flamenol, Ameripol or Hycar, Chemigum, Butyl rubber, and Flexon. None of these is synthetic rubber in the strict chemical meaning of the word synthetic, as none is identical in chemical structure with natural rubber. However, all possess some of the physical properties of natural rubber, and in addition usually have some outstanding property not found in natural rubber that makes them superior for certain uses. Because of these superior qualitites, a considerable demand had arisen for synthetic rubbers before the present emer¬gency, although the price was several times that of natural rubber.

Design loads are limited for piles relying upon toe stresses in rock due to uncertainty about the rock quality over the whole pile diameter because of rock mass properties or construction effects. The paper discusses the use of video images to evaluate rock quality at the bottom of piles socketed into graniodorite bedrock in a steel pipe pile project. Skillful interpretation was required to assess the 3D properties of the rock from video images. It is necessary to observe the rock mass characteristics near the project site for better perception of the rock features from the images. Video image interpretation skills were established by the evaluation of the cores drilled under the socket base and the results of pile loading tests. Correlations were found between rock appearance in the images and the rock socket drilling records. Rock socket acceptance criteria were developed through monitoring the drilling operations for the specific site procedures. Video images then served as one of the quality-assurance tools together with probing and pile loading test. Lessons and methods learned from video inspection in this project could be used to evaluate rock quality in similar cases.

THE Australian States and New Zealand have for many years provided instruction in mining, metallurgy, geology, and their allied subjects through their Universities and Schools of Mines. Though such education has been provided at considerable expenditure, there is no legal recognition whatever given to the holders of degrees, diplomas, or certificates granted by the authorities controlling these educational institutions. Certain of the, Australian States and New Zealand require, however, that mine managers and other officials employed by the mining industry shall 'hold' certificates granted by their respective Mines Departments.The position at present is that each educational institution is practically a law unto itself, and therefore in many ways there is a want of uniformity amongst institutions all aiming at the same result the training of mining men. The object of this paper is, in the first place, to point out certain aspects of this want of uniformity, and thereby how disabilities accrue. "THE REVIVAL of the Mayo mining camp, with particular reference to the activities of United Keno Hill Mines, Limited, has been one •of the more spectacular and also one of the most important of the post-war developments in the Canadian mining field. The geological location of the camp, coupled with other natural disadvantages, have in the past limited the mining area to small-scale, highgrading operations, but the post-war improvement in metal prices has now broadened the possibilities and has led to the considerable success achieved by United Keno Hill Mines, Limited, and the present boom-type development by a whole host of newcomers to the field.LocationYukon which has an area of 207,000 square miles, is showing ever increasing possibilities as a mineral source of great value and more and more attention is being focussed on the Territory. The accompanying generalized map (Figure 1) shows the main transportation routes and mining districts.The Mayo Mining District comprises roughly the eastern two thirds of Yukon Territory lying north of McMillan river and south of the Peel. The district was one of the first in the Territory in which placer gold was discovered, but the occurrences proved of minor importance. Other minerals reported include ores of tungsten, tin, antimony, and several other metals, but of primary importance have been the ores containing silver-lead-zinc-cadmium now being developed and mined in the Keno area. Similar ores have been found over a very considerable area, extending some 50 miles north, 15 miles east, 30 miles west, and 10 miles south of the townsite of Keno Hills, Keno City, a total area of 2,700 square miles."

A new hyperbolic model for generating P-Y curves is developed for use in lateral analyses of cemented soils (a ?C-F? soil with both cohesive intercept and friction angle), and includes degradation of the static loading soil response to model the effects of load cycling (repeated loading) with load cycle number. The p-y curves, for both static and cyclic loading, were derived from full-scale lateral test results conducted on a set of six drilled shafts in a loess deposit at the Kansas DOT test site. Values of the model parameters obtained from the load testing at this site are presented, as well as a discussion of the model parameters effect on the results such that the model may be rationally applied to other sites with C-F type soils. A step-by-step procedure is presented to illustrate the application of the model. Correlation of the model to the CPT cone tip resistance (qc) from CPT testing is made, as this was found to be the most reliable; However, the model is applicable to other methods, both in-situ and laboratory, of assessing the soils strength.

For the construction of tunnels and other underground structures, extraction of the exact amount of material is of paramount importance both economically and for engineering purposes. In the Sequential Support Method (NATM) immediate (sequential)and smooth support by means of shotcrete, steel arches, lattice girders and rockbolts, either singly or in combination are used; cutting of the precise (albeit sometimes of complex geometry) profile is an integral part of the method. In order to save unnecessary excavation and provide better information to the machine operator, VMT GmbH has developed a system to support precise excavation of the tunnel profile when using road headers or other partial face cutting machines. This paper outlines the principles of this system with examples from Australia, Ger-many, Sweden and Spain and will cite examples of typical savings achieved.

"While conducting investigations in connection with the helium program of the Bureau of Mines, the Cryogenic Laboratory has improved an apparatus for the rapid and accurate determination of the helium content of natural gas and gaseous mixtures derived from that source. The separation of helium is effected by the use of activated coconut charcoal which, when cooled to liquid-air temperatures, absorbs the nitrogen and other constituents of the gas, leaving the helium in a. spectroscopically pure state. This absorptive property of activated charcoal was discovered- by Dewar3/ in 1875. Several years later, while conducting their original researches on helium in natural gas, Cady and McFarland employed the charcoal method for the absorption and removal of the common constituents of natural gas and constructed an efficient apparatus in which this operation could be effected.4/ Shortly after initiating the government's helium activities during the World War period, the Bureau of Mines adopted, with Minor modifications, the Cady and McFarland apparatus and method of analysis. Seibel.5./ described this modified apparatus and method of procedure as part of a publication on helium-bearing natural gas. Subsequently, the Bureau's apparatus for helium analysis has been simplified and improved to facilitate more rapid and positive operation. The apparatus and method of procedure now being used by the Bureau of Mines Cryogenic Laboratory arc described in this paper.The personnel of the Bureau of Mines Cryogenic Laboratory has improved and brought the helium apparatus described herein to its present state of perfection. The writer's contributions have been-of minor importance, and he wishes to give the various members and former members of the laboratory staff full credit for the improvements they have made. He also desires to express his appreciation for suggestions and criticisms offered during the preparation of this paper to the following members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines, which now includes the Amarillo Helium Plant and Cryogenic Laboratory: H. A. Cattell, chief engineer; C. W. Seibel, supervising engineer of the Amarillo Helium Plant; W. M. Deaton, chemist-in-charge of the Cryogenic Laboratory; and H. S. Kennedy.The quantitative determination of helium in a gaseous mixture is accomplished by the removal of the other constituents from the sample, either by chemical or physical Means, leaving only the helium which can be measured directly. Chemical methods, when applied to natural gas, require the burning of the hydrocarbons in oxygen, the, absorption of the resulting carbon dioxide in a caustic solution, the removal of the excess oxygen in a suitable solution such as an alkaline pyrogallate, and the elimination of nitrogen by sparking or by combination with hot calcium or magnesium.. Such procedures are very slow and tedious compared with the physical method which employs the absorptive property of activated charcoal to effect the separation of the other constituents from the helium."

Flame safety lamps have been used in gaseous mines since the Davy lamp was introduced, more than 100 years ago. During the last decade the flame safety lamp has been rapidly replaced by the electric lamp as a device for illuminating the miner's working place; in the United States the electric cap lamp has been widely adopted. For example, in 1911 approximately 45,000 flame lamps and no electric lamps were being used in the Pennsylvania bituminous mines, which were then producing 35 per cent of all the soft coal mined in this country; by 1918 the flame lamps had decreased to 17,000, whereas electric lamps-mostly of one maketotaled nearly 48,000. In Great Britain during the same years the total of 723,934 flame lamps decreased to 590,185 and the electric lamps gained rapidly from 4,298 to 156,521. No later reliable figures are at hand. However, before the flame lamp becomes obsolete, it is fitting that the Bureau of Mines compile a permanent record of a device which has served the mining industry for more than three generations, and not only made possible the development of entire districts that otherwise could not have been worked but undoubtedly saved the lives of thousands of underground workers. Flame safety lamps are capable of doing more than the name indicates. First, under normal conditions, they can be used in a mine atmosphere that contains an explosive mixture of gas and air without great danger of exploding such a mixture, though such use of a flame lamp should not be permitted. Second, to an experienced man they indicate percentages of gas much lower than the explosive limit, and thus can be used to indicate to workers the approach of an unsafe condition in the mine atmosphere. Third, flame lamps will not burn in an atmosphere greatly deficient in oxygen, and they therefore warn the users of such deficiency in time to withdraw to a place of safety. Flame safety lamps are still used rather widely in the United States for general illumination and to a still greater extent for detecting gas. Many coal-producing States require fire bosses to use these lamps in gaseous mines, and the regulations of several States specify that a gIven number of such lamps be kept available for emergency service.

The location, features, qualities, and extent of iron occurrences and the associated resources--limestone and dolomite, bentonite, coal-lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water--are evaluated. The results of pioneer beneficiation tests on South Dakota taconite are discussed. In addition, pertinent features of taconite development, cost factors, the Western and Central United States trade area and markets are reported. The State's production of iron ores until 1963 has been small and for purposes other than the manufacture of iron. This investigation disclosed the probability of large resources of taconite in Pennington and Lawrence Counties. The average iron content is 29 percent, and a 65-percent or better iron concentrate might be produced. Ample resources are available for mining and processing taconite. An investment of at least $26 million would be required for a plant capable of turning out 1 million tons of agglomerated iron concentrate per year. The feasibility of such an enterprise is indicated, but intensive investigation and research must be completed to justify such an investment.

This report covers the final results of a two-phase contract study conducted between July 1974 and October 1976. A comprehensive summary of the initial phase of the study is included. Phase I of the study involved the investigation and evaluation of all potential candidate underground systems for mining the deeper deposits of oil shale and associated minerals in the Piceance Creek basin of northwestern Colorado. Phase II called for the refinement and the detailed technical and economic analysis of the most promising system or systems, thus disclosed. Of the several systems initially investigated and evaluated, four Showed considerable merit for exploiting the deeper deposits: (1) chamber and pillar mining with spent shale backfill, (2) sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill, (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence, and (4) block caving mining using LHD's. Final refinement and analysis of these four systems indicated their technical feasibility over at least part of the range of conditions expected in the deeper deposits. Their economic feasibility also was indicated under certain operating and market conditions. A variety of engineering, production, and cost information is provided on each of these systems.

THIS paper gives the results : first, of a research into the somewhat extensive literature of titanium; and second, of a series of original tests upon the effect of titanium on iron castings. New investigations have also been made upon the effect of titanium on steel, but I hope to treat this subject in an independent paper at some later date, and, therefore, will not discuss the experiments in detail here. The combined results of this study, which extended over a period of more than two years, can be briefly summarized as follows: 1. Steel or cast-iron, in which the titanium is properly proportioned, and which has been properly treated, is improved in strength, toughness, and durability against wear, such as, for example, the wear of railroad-rails, of steel and chilled-iron .rolls, car-wheels, etc. 2. These improvements seem to be caused, not so much by the direct effect of titanium on the metal, as by its cleansing influence in removing harmful impurities, such as oxygen and oxides, nitrogen, occluded slags, and perhaps also sulphur. It appears also to reduce segregation, which would contribute to the same end. 3. In order that its effects may be fully realized, the treatment of steel or iron with titanium must be correctly performed. This report is the first substantial description of the carbonizing process and the details of experimental work conducted at the Denver laboratories under a coopeative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Texas Power & Light Co. It presents the results of tests on several Texas lignites and other typical western coals that have been processed in the first pilot plant operated at Denver. Investigations on drying fine coal in the entrained and fluidized state have been under way at Bureau of Mines Denver laboratories for several years. Reports on this work were published in 1949 and 19505/ describing the theory and practice of re-moving inherent moisture from the lower -rank coals. The investigation did not include a study of the removal of surface moisture from fine fuel. Private industry in Canada became interested in the possibilities of drying fine coal, employing the closed-circuit system and techniques recommended by the Bureau. Large, commercial-scale drying units were built by a Canadian company, which successfully demonstrated that surface moisture could be removed from fine coal at high efficiency and capacity ill drying units similar in design to those developed by the Bureau.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Metallurgy and Materials) degree Corrosion in exhaust systems can occur on both the interior and exterior surfaces. Chloride-containing de-icing salts on the roads in colder countries greatly increases the rate of corrosion on the exterior surfaces. This paper investigates the relative exterior corrosion resistance of three alloys?two ferritic stainless steels( AISI Types 409 and 441) and an aluminized mild steel. The exhaust system is split into two categories?the hot end and the cold end. A test for each of these ends was designed?the standard ASTM G85test was modified to create a simulated driving cycle. The cold end test samples were exposed to ten driving cycles, and the hot end test samples were exposed to five driving cycles. A driving cycle constitutes the car being started from cold, driven until the operating temperatures are reached, and switched off and allowed to cool. Pitting corrosion is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring at the cold end of the exhaust system. The aluminized mild steel was the most resistant alloy in this test, and Type 409 the least. However, once the protective aluminium layer degrades, corrosion will occur rapidly. At the hot end of the exhaust system, spalling of the surface oxide layer is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring. Type 441 was the most resistant in this test, and the aluminized mild steel the least resistant. Potentiodynamic tests were performed on the alloys?the results agreed with the results obtained in the exposure tests.

Jet grouting has increasingly become a ground improvement technology used to address seepage concerns and provide strength improvement to soils underlying dams. The technique of jet grouting uses high pressure/volume jet fluids to erode existing soil, evacuate some or most of the soil, and mix the remaining cuttings with cement slurry to form soilcrete. While considered a useful technology, this paper discusses some of the problems that can develop while jet grouting in or below a dam with an operational reservoir and seepage condition. Jet grouting experience at Tuttle Creek Dam indicates concerns with respect to ground fracture; spoil return, column diameter consistency, and homogeneity of resulting soilcrete. Recommendations are presented to increase monitoring of downhole parameters during jet grouting to better understand the downhole pressures and soil response during jet grouting.
