Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division 'of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited since October, 1960. The number of thickeners in the continuous thickening stage was thereby reduced from eight to three. There has been an increase of 25 per cent in throughput and a reduction of solids in thickener over-flow from 3-4 g/l. solids to 0·5 g Ir. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0·25 lb Separan NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3 per cent in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of Separan NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution priOl; to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strippings from 47 to 71 hr. However, there has been a slight increase in the lead content of the cadmium metal produced.The use of Separan NP10 to settle copper bearing residue in a batch process stage has resulted in a five-fold increase in settlement rate and a reduction in purification cycle time.INTRODUCTIONThe Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, Risdon, Tasmania, produces zinc by electrolysis of purified zinc sulphate solution, the raw material being zinc sulphide concentrate. In the Risdon process (Van Arsdale, 1953; J ohnstone, 1953; Ross, 1949) the compound zinc ferrite (ZnO.Fe203) is formed during the concentrate roasting stage. When the roasted material is leached in dilute sulphuric acid the zinc ferrite is not attacked, and it remains as part of the insoluble leach residue, of which it may form as much as two-thirds of the whole. This will continue to be so in the foreseeable future as the technology is most efficient, both process and economy-wise. However, as the world is moving into the next millennium, a critical look is being given to the process primarily because of its non-ecofriendliness (as a result of extensive use of metallurgical coal/coke requiring elaborate pollution control facilities) and huge investment involved for supporting facilities like extensive raw material preparation and handling, agglomeration, adoption of sophisticated instrumentation and control system, etc.

Finite-element,, mathematical models that solve LaPlace's and Richard's equations numerically were used to locate the phreatic surface within tailings pond embankments and to define the subsurface flow of water from the pond. Both must be known to design structurally and environmentally safe tailings dams. The permeability distribution within and beneath the embankment, the fluid potential values upgradient and downgradient from the embankment, and the geometry and elevation of an approximately impermeable layer at some depth beneath the embankment were used as computer inputs in analyzing over a dozen finite-element models of tailings dams varying structurally from simple to complex. Results predicted with the finite-element model were confirmed with measurements in a laboratory model of a tailings pond and in the field. Of particular importance to the design of safe slopes, all data indicated that the phreatic surface within a tailings dam is concave upward, a configuration opposite that in most earth dams. The close correlation between predicted and experimental values confirmed the practicability of using the finite-element technique to design safe tailings dams.

Most, if not all, of the six recognised post-Cretaceous, predominantly andesitic mineralised belts in the region are now thought to be subduction-related magmatic arcs. The Inner Carpathian arc and the Eastern Bosnia or Drina-Rhodope arc host numerous vein and replacement deposits with epithermal features and Zn-Pb+/-Ag as the predominant economic minerals. In contrast, the south Apuseni Mountains have produced over 1 600 t Au from epithermal veins but very little Zn-Pb. Recent age determinations and geophysical data from the Baia Mare district of the Inner Carpathians suggest that mineralisation succeeded volcanism by 1-2 m.y. and accompanied crustal extension and the cooling of a large, mushroom-shaped pluton whose boundaries define the mineral district. In the south Apuseni district, mineralisation can be explained by mixing of meteoric with low-salinity metamorphic water expelled during intrusion of mafic rocks into the middle or lower crust. The more continental or cratonic crust in the Drina-Rhodope and Inner Carpathian arcs precluded the input of low-salinity, Au-bearing metamorphic water; the Zn-Pb deposits formed where convecting meteoric water mixed with saline water, possibly introduced through carbonate rocks in the basement

There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. "In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilizes conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX®1001 ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a 3 stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJ’s and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plants’ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.INTRODUCTIONGekko Systems (Gekko) is a leader in the development of innovative technology for gravity recovery and intensive cyanidation. It provides low cost and metallurgically optimal solutions for its customers. It has also led the trend away from whole ore cyanidation (CIP/CIL) towards gravity/intensive cyanidation (GIL) and gravity/flotation/intensive cyanidation (GFIL) plants. These types of plants offer low capital costs, low environmental impact and maximum return to investors (Rob J Longley et al, 2002). Key to this type of flowsheet is the application of a continuous concentrate unit, such as the InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ), which is designed to produce high gold gravity recoveries at a coarse grind (Sandy Gray, 2003). When combined with other gravity devices, and/or flotation, and intensive cyanidation, using the Gekko InLine Leach Reactor (ILR), very high overall recoveries can be achieved.In 2004, Gekko launched a new range of products called Gekko Modular Systems. The idea was to provide off the shelf, complete solutions for the separation and recovery of complex and free gold as well as the pre-concentration of diamonds. A series of modules were designed that incorporated Gekko manufactured as well as outsourced equipment. Gekko now offers modules ranging from feeding and conveying to crushing, gravity recovery, flotation, intensive cyanidation, refining and detox (see Figure 1)."

Nevsun Resources Ltd. Bisha Mine Project is a gold and base metal development project in the Gash Barka region of west-central Eritrea. The project has the potential to be one of the largest industrial developments in the country, and Eritreans have no experience in modern mining. Nevsun recognized early that the success of the Bisha Project would require meaningful consultation and engagement with all levels of Eritrean society. Meaningful engagement required not only full disclosure, but also capacity building from government officials at all levels to other stakeholders who live in the nearby communities. This paper describes the approach used to develop capacity and to help introduce a modern mining culture in a country without previous experience in mining.

The effects of water addition on the solid-state reaction between Cr2O3 and Na2CO3 at low temperatures (up to 873 K) were investigated to determine its possible influence on the reaction rate and the degree of conversion to soluble chromate. Experiments at high temperatures were conducted for comparison. It was found that adding water to the mixture before roasting enhanced both reaction rate and yield significantly. The reactions followed the Lesokhin-Tempelman equation at low temperature and the Ginstling-Brounshtein equation at above 973 K; the respective activation energies were 95 and 22 kJ/mol

Block cave fragmentation has been documented in the literature to have a significant impact on mine design, performance and downstream material handling and comminution processes. Due to this impact, emphasis is placed on the premining prediction and subsequent quantification of primary and secondary fragmentation distribution. This paper discusses the fragmentation prediction and assessment methodology employed at the Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) cave operations.Prediction of drawpoint fragmentation was based on an iterative process, which relied on an improved quantitative and qualitative understanding of the rock mass as the mining project developed. In particular, the collection of scanline mapping data provided detailed information in relation to discontinuity trace length, persistence, termination characteristics and large-scale planarity. This allowed an improved estimation of select modelling input parameters, in particular ‘block forming’ discontinuity orientation and strength characteristics.With the start of production, drawpoint fragmentation assessment was undertaken using digital image processing (DIP) techniques for drawpoint extracted tonnes up to 61 000 t. This technique provided a consistent methodology to estimate changes in fragmentation as the block cave matured. It can generally be concluded that the measured mean fragmentation distribution became finer as drawpoint tonnage increased. The incremental change in fragmentation distribution (per 10 000 t) was not uniform, with step changes evident. In addition, for a given geotechnical domain and drawpoint tonnage, the measured fragmentation distribution range was found to vary significantly. A possible explanation for these observations may relate to the disturbed flow behaviour noted from marker experiments at RWD and CEPC1. These experiments indicate that material reporting at the drawpoints (for any given tonnage extracted) may be sourced from highly variable heights within the cave, with finer material preferentially reporting.A comparison between predicted and measured drawpoint fragmentation distribution indicated two general findingsa close match between predicted and measured distributions for material greater than 1.0 m3an under prediction of finer material passing 0.5 m3 relative to measured.The findings would indicate that the fragmentation modelling frameworks utilised at both RWD and CEPC1 were deficient at predicting the percentage of finer material for both primary and secondary fragmentation.The wide range in fragmentation distributions observed in the measured results, and the discrepancy between modelled and measured fines should be considered in the design of mine (material flow, extraction level geometry and draw rate), material handling (crushing and material movement), and downstream milling (comminution and metal recovery) processes for future block cave mines at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). With respect to fragmentation distribution range, a sensitivity analysis should be undertaken for these design considerations, with a range in predicted fragmentation distributions investigated (for example, lower quartile, mean and upper quartile). For future mines with similar geotechnical and mining conditions, the calibration of fines should be considered in any fragmentation distribution prediction to match those measured previously.CITATION:Brunton, I, Lett, J L and Thornhill, T, 2016. This paper describes all occurrences of barite in Arizona that were known or reported to the authors. The history, ownership, production, and geologic setting are discussed for most of the deposits. The uses and specifications of product grades are briefly discussed. Seventy-five deposits were examined in 9 of the 14 counties of the State. The descriptions are given under county headings. No occurrences were reported in the four northeastern counties of Coconino, Navajo, Apache, and Greenlee, nor in Santa Cruz in the southern part of the State. From about half of the deposits examined, 55 samples were taken; of these, 45 were for chemical analysis, and 8 larger samples, ranging from 100 to 350 pounds, for beneficiation tests. A 30-ton bulk sample was taken for pilot-plant tests. Bench-scale flotation tests of the eight samples employing several different procedures and reagent combinations yielded marketable-grade barite products with barite recoveries ranging from 60 to 97 percent. Five of the samples contained enough fluorspar to warrant its recovery. Acid-grade concentrates, which accounted for fluorspar recoveries of 45 to 70 percent, were obtained from three of these ores. Batch laboratory tests of a representative portion of the 30-ton bulk sample revealed that acid-grade fluorspar and high-grade barite concentrates could be recovered. Results of the laboratory and continuous pilot-plant tests of this ore will be presented in a separate report.

Controlling coal mine roofs subjected to high-horizontal stress conditions has always been difficult and uncertain. Traditional supports such as wooden cribs and posts, concrete donut cribs, and standing supports collapse and fail when the roof and floor move horizontally as mining progresses. The former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) (currently the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)), in cooperation with Western Fuels-Utah, Incorporated, conducted research to provide an alternative for traditional secondary support systems in a 3-entry gate road system subjected to high horizontal movements. The support system used in several other coal mine operations, consisted of internal high-strength galvanized resin-grouted cable supports. The system virtually eliminates the necessity for external crib, timber, or concrete supports. The support system consisted of 2.4 m (8 ft) full-column resin grouted bolts and 4.8 m (16 ft) long cable supports installed in conjunction with wire mesh and "Monster-Mats." Cable loading and roof deformations were monitored to evaluate the behavior of the immediate and main roofs during first and second panel extractions. Additionally, cable trusses were installed on the longwall headgate to protect the coal conveyance system from roof and pillar falls created by the formation of cutters and gutters. The test results indicated that the designed support system successfully maintained the roof during the extraction of two longwall panels and dramatically reduced the cost of secondary support. This paper describes the theory of high-horizontal roof movements, the advantages of vertical cable supports and cable trusses, and presents the roof and cable measurements made to assess the support performance during longwall retreat mining.

The marble deposits of Yule Creek were first discovered in the late1870s. Minor quarrying occurred between that discovery and the early 1900s. Major development occurred in 1905, when Channing Meek, with some help from the Rockefellers, raised $3 million to develop the Colorado Yule Marble Quarry. That is $50 million in today’s dollars. Some of the words used to describe the marble deposit were “gigantic, remarkable, flawless and immense.” Boosters proclaimed, “The marble age is here.” Obviously, dreams were big for Marble.

The Factorial Model Experimenters are often interested in systems that are multi-factorial. A multi-factorial system is one whose output is believed or known to be dependent on the particular settings of several inputs, or factors. We can think of these factors as defining a space, with each point in this space corresponding to a particular set of factor settings. Experimenting can be thought of as exploring this space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. There are several challenges in this exploration, among which are deciding what region to explore, designing an experiment that explores it most effectively, and describing the results of the exploration. This paper deals principally with the last of these; it shows how the factorial model can be used to describe how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. A strength of the factorial model is that it treats the factors as causes of change in the system's response and focuses on relations among these causes. In particular, the factorial model focuses on whether causes act independently on the system (in a sense to be explained below), or whether they interact. This is important because the experimenter generally seeks to control the system, and because control based on causes that act independently of other causes is relatively simple, whereas control based on causes that interact is more challenging. Also, mapping the space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed - will require less work if, during the exploration, it can be determined which of the causes act independently. For the sake of example, let us assume that the space we are exploring is three-dimensional, and that we have already defined, for each of the three factors, the range of interest. Let us consider all the ways in which the response of the system might depend on the settings of these three factors. In the simplest case, the response in this region does not depend on any of the factors. The response is constant throughout the space, at say, 80 units.

Pound Road Quarry is an alluvial gravel quarry owned and operated by Fulton Hogan Ltd. for the supply of aggregate in Canterbury, and is the largest quarry in the South Island in terms of production. It has evolved from three separate quarries, as a result of which extraction has occurred sporadically in a number of areas. Due to this factor, and the need to manage environmental impacts, a detailed quarry management plan was completed in 1995 which formed the basis for implementation of a certified environmental management system.   In December 1997, the quarry was the first in New Zealand to achieve ISO 14001 (TELARC) accreditation for implementation of an environmental management system. The main potential environmental impacts arising from the quarry operation include dust, noise and groundwater contamination, and visual landscape effects associated with gravel extraction, the mitigation of which is achieved by means of æbest practiceÆ methods. All quarry operations are controlled in terms of the environmental management system by means of regular (monthly and yearly) environmental reviews, appropriate auditing of environmental documents, and monitoring of environmental targets in accordance with consent and statutory requirements.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. "INTRODUCTION Zinc must be of high grade to satisfy the present demand. Even when the amount of premium paid is small, the purer metal as the buyers' preference. The following specifications for spelter were taken from the American Society for Testing Materials for 1927, Part I, pane 524. (The specifications for 1930, p. 582, are tile same.)Another specification for zinc of a much higher grade than any of the above has been established lately by the same society. The committee on zinc die-casting (Proc. Am. Soc. Test. Mat., vol. 31, 1931, p. 263) reached the following, conclusions: I. ""That the purest of zinc is necessary to produce stable zinc-base die castings, and as a result requested specifications for zinc spelter .with total impurities not over 0.02 percent."" Their tests showed that the die castings made of the purest zinc had the least elongation and the greatest tensile strength, and exhibited the least changes with temperature.Still more far-reaching claims are made for the properties of zinc containing over 99.99 percent metal. Zinc foil, for instance, may someday be made as a common commercial product. It would seem likely that the demand for zinc of high grades rill continue and that even purer varieties may be desired. This demand fits in with the modern trend in manufacturing plants of reducing the number of variables to a minimum by using pure materials, and of controlling the processing of metals during their various stages of fabrication by mechanical means instead of by expert laborers."

In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

Following study of historical South African practice and a review of recent experience gained during the design, construction and testing of the high pressure plugs at the South Deep Water Barrier Project, this paper makes recommendations to improve practice. Initially, site investigation requirements are described with reference to geological, hydrogeological and seismic considerations, including site preparation and pre-grouting of the surrounding rock mass, if permeable. Structural and hydraulic aspects of plug design address topics such as residual permeability, aggressive mine water, plug materials, mortar strength and bleed. In situ thermocouples and piezometers are recommended to optimize the timing of plug tightening and monitor plug performance during service. Plug construction covers aggregate preparation, mortar quality control, plug tightening grouts, injection pressures, records and the overriding need for a method statement specification to control all aspects of plug construction. On completion of the plug, tests to establish surrounding rock stress regime, plug strength, and residual permeability are described to enable a comparison with original design assumptions. Monitoring and maintenance procedures are proposed to ensure satisfactory long-term performance of the plugs.

The Allen Park Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Tunnel and relief sewer project, located in the city of Allen Park, MI, is a long-term corrective action designed to bring Sanitary District One?s sanitary system into compliance with its 2005 consent order and service contract with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD). The $20 million project is intended to reduce Allen Park?s wet weather discharges to DWSD, reduce bypass pumping to the Ecorse Creek and limit the future risk of basement flooding by providing storage during wet weather events and eliminating hydraulic bottlenecks in the sanitary sewer system.

The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.
