The Ortiz Mine is operated by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields Ltd., one of the world's major gold producers. The Ortiz Mine is Gold Fields only heap leaching facility as well as being their first operating mine in the U.S.A. The hydrometallurgical processes utilized for recovery of gold and silver at Ortiz are discussed along with the several practical changes in operation adopted since start-up. Included are heap leaching by cyanidation, concentration of values on activated carbon, desorption, and the final electrowinning steps prior to shipment. Construction costs and pertinent technical data are shown.

The oil shales located in the Appalachian Basin cover an eight-state area of the eastern U. S., and are referred to as Devonian (black) shales. These shales have been exploited for their gas potential for several years. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) has conducted research since 1972 on the production of shale oil from the Devonian shales, and this resulted in the development of the HYTORT process. This process demonstrated that the yield from the Eastern oil shales can be greater than the value indicated by the Fischer assay method. IGT estimates that 423 billion barrels (67.3 x 109 m3) of oil could be recoverd by HYTORT processing of surface-minable eastern U. S. shales. Recently American Syncrude Corporation and Southern Pacific Petroleum N. L. have proposed oil shale projects in Kentucky. This paper will describe the surface mining and retorting techniques that have been studied for exploitation of the Devonian shales, and enumerate the problems that have to be overcome before commercial production can be realized from these shales.

INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential health risk associated with exposure of dozer operators to whole-body vibration. Measurements were made on 31 dozers used in different surface mines in Turkey. Predictions of adverse health effects of vibration were based on the standards BS 6841:1987, ISO 2631–1:1997, ISO 2631–5:2004, and the EU Vibration Directive:2002. Operators experienced high and comparable levels of vibration acceleration and dose during all dozer tasks: pushing the material (DOZE), moving forward (FORWARD), moving backward (REVERSE), and ripping (RIP). Specifically, DOZE, FORWARD, REVERSE, and RIP showed high potential of adverse health effects in terms of vibration dose according to the worst-case axis and vector sum criteria and a moderate adverse health effect for acceleration according to the worst-case axis criterion. Operators of large dozers were exposed to lower levels of vibration. However, no statistically significant relationship between vibration exposure levels and the propelling mechanism and the service time of dozers, operator experience, operator age, and ground type was found.

Sufco coal mine, a subsidiary of Arch Western Bituminous Group, recently purchased a reverse osmosis (RO) system. The systems intent was to remove impurities in the water being mixed with the hydraulic oil to maintain the viability of critical longwall hydraulic systems and to prevent degradation. This project not only ensured hydraulic components from corrosion, but also revealed a cost savings by reducing the percentage of hydraulic oil mixed with the RO water. SUFCO WATER TREATMENT HISTORY Sufco coal mine has been in operation for approximately 70 years. Old works extend up to 15 miles one way, not including adjacent mined out longwall panels. Due to the geologic conditions and strata, water treatment has been as simple as putting water in at a high point of a mined out area and recovering it at a low point to discharge. Doing this reduces the total suspended solids (TSS) to less than 25 parts per million (ppm) and the total dissolved solids (TDS) less than 1,200 ppm which complies with Sufco?s water discharge permit. Even though the requirements for the permit were met, the water is still corrosive in nature. A portion of this water is piped back into the fireline (makeup) water system. It is then boosted to pressures of up to 500 psi to support mining sections, belt systems, equipment, fire fighting systems and the longwall.

Our present and future needs for base and previous metals are not satisfied by the present rate of new viable discoveries. This deficiency can be met by increasing the number of competent exploration organizations and by doing a more effective job of prospecting. My principal purpose is to show that new discoveries can be increased by improving the use of exploration techniques in a concept-oriented exploration program. Exploration techniques are defined and classified. The effectiveness of many exploration groups can be improved by better definition of objectives and thorough planning of the exploration program. The role of objectives, planning, and the use of techniques are discussed within the scope of the exploration framework. Common pitfalls in the use of exploration data are identified such as: inconsistency of geologic measurements, negative use of data, indiscriminate use of geo-surveys, collection of irrelevant information, and the unrealistic desire for exploration panaceas. Suggestions for improving the use of techniques include the use of multiple-working hypotheses, improvements in the quality of exploration data, use of geology in the selection, planning and interpretation of geochemical and geophysical surveys, and the recognition of variables and limitations affecting the interpretation of exploration data. The critical role of geologic mapping by Federal and State agencies is mentioned for satisfying the continual exploration demand for better geologic maps and filling many gaps that currently exist. The importance of imaginative and qualified exploration personnel is discussed as well as the maximum utilization of their exploration creativity. The problem of integrating field studies, research and training at universities and research institutions is identified. The need for high-quality research in economic geology is emphasized especially the importance of reducing the steadily increasing gap between basic and applied research.

A salt dome appears to provide the basic medium requirements for the excavation of the 315 foot diameter, unsupported spherical cavity at a depth of 2700 feet required by the AEC in a proposed "decoupling" experiment. Tatum Salt Dome was a natural choice for a site because more geological and hydrological information has been accumulated on Tatum than any other salt dome on the Gulf Coast. The Tatum Dome is a mile in diameter, roughly flat topped, nearly cylindrical in shape and has some overhang at the top. The salt stock has nearly vertical layering of alternating bands of salt and anhydrite. In the vicinity of the dome, adequate fresh water for solution mining is available in surface streams and in subsurface aquifers. A saline aquifer is available for brine disposal. A tentative cavity location was selected near the center of the dome which meets the design criteria established by the AEC.

A computer simulation of the automatic control of continuous mining machines has been prepared, similar to previous simulations of longwall mining systems and coal thickness sensors. The simulation allows for programmed variation of the horizon detection method, the azimuthal guidance system, the type and configuration of the miner, varying hardness in the unmined face material (leading to varying error in the machine heading), and the miner's cutting cycle. It simulates control of the miner in three axes. Use of the simulator makes it possible to anticipate problems arising from the complex character of underground mining, which include unpredictable multi-pass coupling and unpredictable variation in geological conditions.

The influence of mining on the hydro-geomechanical environment is greatly constrained by alternating mining geometries. The limiting magnitudes of surface subsidence and groundwater flow over the mining area, as a result of geometry changes, can be reasonably predicted through a coupled finite-element model introduced in this paper. Verification of the model has been tested using real and conceptual case studies which reveal that changes in strata conductivities are strongly related to the strata deformation induced by mining. The greatest modification of hydraulic conductivities occurs within the caving or severely fractured zones. The study indicates that narrowing the panel face width will substantially reduce both the intensity and extent of mining damage to the overlying strata, limit surface subsidence and constrain the change in hydraulic conductivity to a reduced scale and smaller extent, particularly as mining depth increases.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of geophysical methods to determine rock mass characteristics, particularly rock quality, lithology, and fracture parameters that are important for determining the feasibility of in situ leaching operations. As part of this research, two Bureau-developed crosshole geophysical systems are described that can be used for site investigation and rock mass characterization. Results are given for performance tests at field sites in Arizona and Texas and for correlations between the crosshole seismic data with fracture frequency, rock quality, and lithologic variation. Recommendations are made for using elastic waveform propagation characteristics and dynamic elastic properties for improving rock mass characterization in the geomechanical assessment of in situ leaching deposits.

Several research groups have spent considerable time investigating coarse ore leaching. Coarse ore leaching includes both heap and dump leaching. The term "heap leaching" will be used in this paper to mean any type of coarse ore leaching. The results of their work are generally in agreement: the progress of leaching can be described by the shrinking core model and its associated mathematics. The shrinking core model is schematically represented in Figure 1. The particle is contacted by the leach solution on its outside surface and the solution migrates inward by filling the pores on the particle. As the solution filling the pores comes in contact with grains of ore mineral the reagent chemically reacts with the ore mineral to solubilize the contained metal. The solubilized metal diffuses outward to the particle surface and is washed away by the leach solution flowing past the particle. The leaching reagent in the particle interior is replenished by the diffusion of reagent from the surface of the particle to the interior of the particle. If the chemical reaction between the leaching reagent and the ore mineral is relatively fast compared to the diffusion rate of the reagent in the solution in the pores of the particle then leaching proceeds from the outside of the particle inward resulting in a "shrinking core" of unreacted ore surrounded by a "leached shell". The rate controlling step in the reaction can initially be a chemical reaction between the reagent and the ore mineral grain, however, once the reaction has proceeded a short period of time diffusion of the leaching reagent through the leached shell will be the slow step and hence the rate controlling step in the production of metal from an ore particle.

The objective of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of using a high-pressure roll mill (HPRM) to improve the separation efficiency of dolomite from apatite in downstream operations when treating high-dolomitic pebbles. High-dolomite samples from four phosphate mines were used for the test program. The research work plan included sample characterization studies; INSTRON tests to develop preliminary crushing data; high-pressure roll mill evaluations to determine crushing parameters, such as feed rates, rolls speed and gap, and applied torque, pressure and energy; and screen, microscopy, and flotation studies to assess dolomitelapatite separation efficiency. The results of the HPRM tests show that commercial products for all four mines can be obtained. Recoveries of 74-82% of the P2O5 and rejections of 46-83% of the MgO were reported with an specific energy consumption of 0.2-0.5 of that of a laboratory rod mill.

Orebodies with intricate three-dimensional shapes (such as porphyry molybdenum deposits) are difficult to model using geostatistics or other computer-assisted methods. The strong trends in their spatial grade distributions occur as mathematically complex shapes and prevent the customary assumption of local stationarity that is required for accurate ore reserve estimation. "Zoned Kriging", a new method developed by AMAX, solves this problem directly by using the geologist's interpretation of the ore zones as a parameter in the kriging equations. The geological basis and methods used in the Climax ore zoning technique are reviewed and discussed relative to their application in zoned geostatistical modeling. The Zoned Kriging technique is described and demonstrated using data typical of mineral deposits.

Boron, estimated to comprise about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust (Fleischer 10), as an element is never found free in nature, although its compounds are found in many localities. the borates are the most important. Sassolite (B(OH)3) and boracite (Mg6C12B1406), non-borates, are-of-minor importance. The crystal structures of most natural borates are still unknown. A classification based solely on the ratio of boron to the total number of cations has been devised (Palache 28). This classification divides the borates into four, sub-groups; anhydrous borates, hydrated borates, borates containing hydroxyl or halogen and compound borates. Only four or five minerals of the hydrated borates group have ever been used commercially. In more recent years, the sodium borates have comprised all but a 'small fraction of all borates used. Borax, the hydrated borate compound, is the most important of all boron compounds. It has been used so long and so often that the layman often confuses borax and boron and, applies the terms synonymously.

A new radioactive tracer method to measure airflow in inaccessible airways has been developed for situations when studies of the mine ventilation system are not possible using conventional flowmeters (anemometers). The new method has been tested in the ventilation laboratory at the University of Kentucky and in the Experimental Underground Coal Mine at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This new tracer method has been utilized in leakage, dilution and flow velocity measurements in laboratory and field (mine) experiments.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." A detailed kinetic study of the flotation installation at the Metcalf Concentrator revealed a rougher flotation circuit operating under less than optimal conditions. Based on these results, a project was initiated to approximately double the rougher flotation capacity by increasing the installed volume from 780 cubic meters to 1,560 cubic meters. This project, which was completed in early 1991, replaced the existing cells with larger capacity cells. A comprehensive analysis of results demonstrates significant metallurgical benefits. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND The Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci, Arizona and is part of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Incorporated. Sumitomo Metal Mining of Arizona is a minority partner in the operation with 15% interest. The Metcalf Concentrator is the newer and smaller concentrator and operates in conjunction with the Morenci Concentrator. Operating capacity at Metcalf is currently 48,000 TPD of ore on a 365 days per year basis. The Metcalf Concentrator was commissioned in 1974 at a 30,000 TPD operating rate for the purpose of treating ores originating in the Metcalf Mine. The mine takes its name from the former town of Metcalf which was named for Robert Metcalf who was credited with discovery of the mineral district. The predominant ore mineral is chalcocite which occurs as a secondary enrichment closely associated with iron pyrite. The host rock is largely granodiorite and quartz monzonite. The original rougher flotation circuit consisted of a total of six rows of Wemco 8.5 cu. meter (300 cu.ft.) flotation machines treating pulp from the two grinding sections (Sections A and B). Each row was configured in a 4-4-4 arrangement. Shortly after startup the throughput rate was increased significantly without sustaining a recovery loss. This increase was achieved by raising the target value for the particle size of the cyclone overflow which is the rougher flotation feed. Shortly thereafter, the capacity of the pump and cyclone began to restrict further increases in throughput. After testing, two 66 cm. (26-in.) cyclones and a 12-in. X 12-in. centrifugal pump replaced the original classification equipment. As a result of these modifications, the grinding section could routinely process in excess of 42,000 TPD. Due to the increased tonnage rates, limitations in the rougher flotation circuit performance were observed. In an effort to improve the performance of rougher flotation with this higher throughput, the speed of the flotation mechanisms was increased from 230 RPM to 250 RPM. This change improved the suspension of the coarser feed and induced additional air into the pulp. It did, however, apply additional strain to the motors, shortening their life. At these elevated processing rates, it was found that the dart valves operated almost entirely at the top end of the control range and could not efficiently handle upsets from the grinding section. This was remedied by lowering the end overflow weir and allowing some of the tailings to overflow the end weir. However, in order to obtain acceptable recovery levels, the flotation pulp was maintained at a high level, adversely influencing the rougher concentrate grade.

Historically, as for most reagents used in flotation, the wide-spread use of dialkyl dithiophosphinates as collectors in practical applications has preceded a detailed scientific understanding of how they work. Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a technologically and commercially important class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu-Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. Plant usage has demonstrated that dithiophosphinates exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) profile. Although dithiophosphinates received little attention in the past in the flotation research community, recently, there has been significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamental interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized and explained by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions with various minerals and metals of dithiophosphinate and dithiophosphate analogues brings out some of the subtleties that seemingly minor changes in collector chemistry can make. The critical overview and analysis given here is useful in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important class of compounds. This in turn can provide a basis for the design of studies to advance our understanding of dithiophosphinate flotation performance.

Seismic surveys utilizing the MD-1 have been performed by Geophysical Specialties Company since 1957 in many parts of the, U. S. and Canada and in several foreign countries. These surveys have proven the refraction seismic technique to be applicable to a wide variety of engineering problems. The best known applications of the instrument have been in the, construction industry, where it is used for the delineation of material and mineral deposits and for bedrock depth determinations. Fast on-the-site depth determinations give reliable subsurface' information even in boulder-strewn soils. A widely publicized use of the MD-1 is to make rippability studies in which the instrument is used to determine the seismic velocity of the materials to be excavated. By use of special tables which correlate rippability with seismic velocities, such as those prepared by the Caterpillar Tractor Company using the MD-1, the rippability of-a specific material may be determined.

Thousands of mine air samples are taken underground each year by MSHA inspection personnel in order to further assure that miners have a safe and healthy environment in which to work. While most air samples are taken with stain tubes, many samples are obtained in evacuated containers and returned to a laboratory for more accurate analysis on a gas chromatograph. In order to enhance the accuracy, reliability and repeatability of the samples taken with evacuated containers, improved procedures have been developed, which are described in this report, for filling two different types of evacuated sample containers using either mechanical or electrical pumps. In those instances, such as when sampling strata gases in drill holes, where mathematical calculations may be required for proper sampling, example calculations are provided. The use of a third type of evacuated container, which is generally restricted to non-specific sampling of the ambient mine atmosphere, is also described.
