Vibratory or oscillatory conveyors can be found in all types of industry, handling virtually any granular bulk material, often at elevated temperatures. These conveyors can be combined with other process functions, such as screening, cooling, drying and dewatering, while conveying. Although construction and installation is relatively simple, the engineering and design analysis of the vibratory mechanics is fairly complex. This paper will discuss the basic types of vibratory conveyors and the analysis of the material movement along the carrying trough.

It is the nature of mining to reshape the landscape. Mining is an earth moving process with many of the same activities associated with the regrading of a site for a shopping center, drainage channel, housing project or ballfield. The difference exists only in purpose and duration of activity. The purpose of mining is to, produce a valuable product. The purpose of regrading for construction of a project is to create a predetermined landscape for a specific end use. In both situations the objective is to move earth materials as efficiently as possible. The question is then raised, if similarities exist, can mining operations be directed to shape predetermined landscapes as an integral part of its earth moving activity. This paper will explore the opportunities and issues of shaping sand, gravel and hardrock construction aggregate sites for productive end uses. It is based upon the premise that, as an earth moving operation, the process of extracting sand and gravel includes an inherent capability to shape productive lands as an integral part of the mining operation. In the course of any mining operation non-commercial materials, including overburden, fines and excess sand are handled to extract and process the commercial products. This activity exists regardless of whether or not there is a plan to reclaim the land. Moving this dirt is a basic operational cost. This cost need not be significantly increased when the material is deposited to shape land rather than be stock- piled just to clear the way for mining the deposit. Moving of dirt to create useable land can be guided by the same criteria used to remove the dirt from the deposit: for example, limiting the- hauling distance. Over a period of time earth handling costs can be reduced by minimizing the need to transport the stockpiled material a second time to the new landform location.

Regulations, such as the MINER Act of 2006, require the installation of redundant and secondary communication systems to assure that contact can be established with coal miners who may become trapped underground as a result of an event such as a fire, explosion or inundation. For half a century, the orientation towards underground communications has been that more complex systems better serve the coal miner. However, if a goal is to provide for an alternative means of establishing communication between the surface and trapped miners underground, then some of the technology employed should be simple, reliable and cost-effective. Coal mines spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on exploratory drillholes to characterize reserves, sometimes decades ahead of mine development. During the pre-mine planning phases, certain exploratory drillholes could be located and then outfitted with a simple communication link that would remain compatible with the continuing evolution of communication systems. Inexpensive links, whose locations would be accurately recorded, would be exposed by continuous miners during mine entry development, thereby allowing an underground phone to be connected to a surface station in the event of an emergency. A latent network of these communication links could be installed for less than $500 each, minimally affecting drilling and grouting operations, and could be designed to be compatible with many communication devices. This research examines methods and materials for incorporating an embedded communication link during pre-mine exploration drilling, addresses significant factors affecting its implementation, and presents a recommended design. Since mine plans are known to change, the objective is to minimize cost so that, if not used, the investment is minimal for a potential secondary means of communication between the surface and underground workings.

The United States is being invaded... by foreign capital: marks, francs, pounds, yen, lire, riyals, you name it: On almost any given day the Wall Street Journal will contain a new report on a department store, newspaper, bank, hotel, agricultural land, supermarket chain, et a1 being bought into by overseas investment. Xenophobic reaction to this revised national condition has begun to set in. Several farming states have and are introducing legislation to monitor foreign land buying. In Congress a mandatory reporting requirement for foreign purchasing is currently under study. In a relatively short period the country has reverted from world leader- ship in overseas acquisition and involvement to become itself one of the prime investment opportunities in existence. Interestingly enough, one of the industries where this changed status has become most apparent and pronounced is within that small/regional/segmented/low value-to-weight bulk commodity enterprise ranked as the backbone of the nation's construction activity. U.S. cement making is not only undergoing internationalization in its ownership, but also in its product, equipment, and engineering expertise.

A review of the published literature on the mechanism of depression of sulfide minerals shows that a unified theory is not yet available. The various mechanisms that have been postulated include competition between depressants and collectors to adsorb at the surface sites, creation of thermodynamic conditions nonconducive for formation of a metal collector salt or formation of a hydrophilic coating on the surface. The hydrophilic coating may or matt not effect the adsorption of collectors. In yet another mechanism, the depressant nay participate directly in oxidation/reduction reactions between collectors and sulfide minerals. Examples from the literature are discussed to highlight oxidation/reduction effects in the depression of sulfide minerals.

The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining’s East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and RailSystems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km(3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

The Kennecott Ridgeway Mine in South Carolina is scheduled to complete mining and ore processing in the last quarter of 1999. Tailings are disposed in a 300 acre, lined tailings impoundment. To facilitate closure and reclamation, modification of the tailings impoundment operation has been adopted. Mining involved the sequenced development of two open pits. In 1996 mining of the South Pit was completed and backfilling of the pit with waste rock from the North Pit was initiated and will continue until mining ceases. Both pits will be reclaimed as fresh water lakes. This paper presents the physical, geochemical and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the operational and post operational management of the project. Comparison of the operational monitoring data against predicted performance are reviewed.

El Abra is one of the world’s premier copper de-posits. The project is located in northern Chile, 140 km (87 miles) inland from the Pacific coast. It has the same geologic age and structural setting as the world-class Chuquicamata copper mine located 42 km (26 miles) to the south. The current development plan for El Abra extracts798 Mt (879 million st) of high-quality oxide ore. This will require building a solvent extraction/electrowinning(SX/EW) facility that can produce 225 kt/a (248,000stpy) of cathode copper. This will make El Abra the largest SX/EW copper operation in the world, and the world’s seventh-largest copper producer.

"Uncertainty exists in ultimate-pit limits due to geologic variation and unpredictable economic landscapes. In this work, we show how this uncertainty affects the ultimate pit and how it can be analyzed to improve the mine planning process. A stochastic framework using geostatistical simulation and parametric analysis was used to model the effects of geologic and economic variations on ultimate-pit limits and overall project economics. This analysis was made possible by a new pit optimization implementation that can be automated and set up to calculate ultimate pits for hundreds of different scenarios in a matter of hours. Quantifying ultimate-pit uncertainty early in the mine planning process allows mining engineers to make informed decisions regarding infrastructure placement and to mitigate the possibility of incurring substantial costs to relocate critical mine facilities. Resumen ¦ Existen dudas sobre los límites del pit final por causa de la variación geológica y lo impredecible de los paisajes económicos. En este trabajo les mostramos como esta incertidumbre afecta el pit final y como puede ser analizada para mejorar el proceso de planificación de la mina. Se usó un marco estocástico con simulación geoestadística de análisis paramétrico con el fin de poder hace la modelación de los efectos de las variaciones geológicas y económicas en los límites de pit finales y proyectos económicos en general. Este análisis fue posible gracias a una nueva implementación de optimización de pits que puede ser automatizada y configurada para calcular pits finales para cientos de escenarios diferentes en cuestión de horas. La cuantificación temprana de la falta de certeza en pits finales durante el proceso de planificación permite a los ingenieros de minas tomar decisiones informadas en lo que respecta a la ubicación de infraestructura y en la mitigación de posibles costos sustanciales por causa de la reubicación de instalaciones clave de la mina."

The perennial subject of comminution is deserving of a fresh approach if one can be found. This is attempted here by directing attention primarily to principles rather than to theories. While theories attempt to explain how a certain process acts, principles delineate the laws which the action-must follow. Comminution may be defined as the progressive separation of particulate matter. At the present time this is accomplished commercially by applying energy in the form of compressive and, shearing forces. Such forces strain and distort the particles they contact. When-the applied stress locally exceeds the breaking strength at the weakest flaw in the particle, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends through the particle as a break. The minute changes in shape and the resulting energy flow cause the failure of other highly stressed flaws, with the consequent formation of a progeny (1) of new smaller particles out of its destroyed progenitor. The applied mechanical energy is transformed into strain energy as the particle is distorted, and then into heat when it fails. Only a tiny fraction of the order of 1/1000 of the applied energy necessary for breakage appears as new surface energy in the product particles. Eveleth taconite company was formed in 1963 to mine and beneficiate taconite on the Mesabi range of Minnesota. Its thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minnesota, and the crude ore is transported by rail to its Fairlane plant approximately ten miles to the south of the mine, "figure 1". As is implied by the names of the mine and plant, the ford motor company is the principal owner of Eveleth taconite company, with an 85% interest, Oglebay Norton company holds the remaining 15% interest and also is the managing agent.

Mineral Resource Technologies(MRT) and Michigan Technological University (MTU)finalized an agreement that permits MRT to offer an advanced carbon removal technology process for coal fly ash from an ash residue generated by utilities. The agreement encompasses the dominant existing US patents using a wet process for fly ash enhancement. The wet process for coal beneficiation of a fly ash product involves four steps. First, a slurry mixture is formed of a fly ash material and a liquid. Second, gravity is used to separate and collect a first-material fraction of the fly ash, having a density less than the liquid. This is done by skimming off the flotation slurry material.

The copper-silver-mercury orebody of Gortdrum Mines (Ireland) Limited is located 3 miles north of the town of Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland. A drilling programme from 1964 to 1966 delineated an ore¬body of 4.19 million tons of copper ore assaying 1.19% Cu and 0.75 ozs per ton Ag, which could be mined from an open pit. Testwork having shown that the ore was amenable to conventional flotation techniques, it was decided to build a concentrator of 500,000 tons ore per year capacity. Stripping of the open pit commenced in 1966 and in the autumn of 1967 the concentrator started up. The first shipments of concentrates were made to the smelter in Europe in late 1967. In the spring of the following year, word was received from the smelter that these early shipments contained between 1% and 2% Hg, and that the smelter could not accept further shipments of this quality.

Rock salt has been mined by the solution method for many years in many countries. Attempts have been made in the past in Canada and various other countries to produce potash by the' same method. However, only Kalium Chemicals Limited (1) has been successful, possibly because the conditions in Saskatchewan are the most favorable conditions to be found so far for the development of a solution mining method for potash. There are significant differences in solution mining of rock salt and solution mining of potash. First, rock salt deposits are relatively pure in respect to soluble minerals, whereas potash is never found in the pure state and contains Substantial amounts of other soluble minerals, particularly rock salt. In comparison to rock salt, much less potash is dissolved and brought to the surface for the same amount of water circulated through the orebody. The amount of water to be evaporated per unit weight of product is a major difference. Much greater amounts of water must be evaporated when producing potash and the treatment of the brine is more complicated because other dissolved salts have to be separated. Secondly, the rock salt deposits, particularly the domes, are much thicker. Bed thickness is of prime importance because it determines the yield of a well and consequently the economics of the process. Furthermore, as rock salt provides a strong roof structure, larger cavities can be developed and this prolongs the life of the rock salt well.

Collectors commonly used in flotation to date fall into two main classes: ionic and nonionic. The use of neutral or oily collectors is generally limited to the flotation of nonpolar minerals onto which they are adsorbed by forces of a physical or 'Van der Waals' type, while ionizable chemical collectors are utilized for all other types of minerals, adsorption in this case involving bonds essentially of a chemical nature. Though chemical adsorption is more selective than physical adsorption, even heteropolar collectors are active towards certain classes of minerals (sulphides for example) rather than towards one individual mineral. Thus, in order to float a given mineral from a mixture of minerals belonging to the same class, modifiers have to be used to render the action of the collector more specific. However, there are often considerable difficulties involved in this procedure and the desired results are not always attained, especially in the case of minerals of complex composition whose surface properties are not sufficiently well known. Hence the importance of seeking out collectors capable of linking selectively with given minerals. Selective linkage is possible if the collector structure incorporates active groups having specific affinity for certain cations characteristic of the mineral surface. The decision to investigate the possibility of utilizing chelate--forming reagents for flotation was based on the premise that phenomena which occur in solution and involve chemical reactions in the strict sense of the meaning and those which occur on the surface are closely correlated (1)

Introduction ASARCO's Ray Operations include an open-pit copper mine in the Mineral Creek Mining District of Pinel County. The district is located in east central Arizona, 132 km (82 miles) southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and 126 km (78 miles) north of Tucson, AZ. The mine lies 8 km (5 miles) north of the Gila River in Mineral Creek Valley, between the Tortilla Mountains to the west and the Dripping Springs Range to the east. The rich copper deposits of the Mineral Creek mining district were first noted by a US Army Officer in 1847. The Ray Copper Company was the first major operation in the area. The company was named after the Ray mining claim, which was one of the earliest recorded claims. After decades of sporadic and unsuccessful mining ventures, the Ray Consolidated Mining Company was formed in 1910. The company introduced one of the first successful block caving operations in the world. In 1933, the Kennecott Copper Corporation acquired the Ray Consolidated Mining Company and continued operation of the mine under the same name until 1943, when the property was renamed the Ray Mines Division of Kennecott. Underground mining continued until 1955, when the mine was converted to an open pit operation. In November 1986, ASARCO Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division and related facilities from Kennecott. The purchase also included the Hayden concentrator and the Ray Smelter, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the Ray Mine. This paper summarizes the 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) in-pit crusher and overland-conveying system and the 24,200 tpd (30.000 stpd) copper SAG concentrator and tailings disposal system constructed at ASARCO's Ray Complex - Ray Operations. General description of facilities The Ray concentrator includes a sulfide SAG concentrator, a "relocatable" in-pit primary-crushing plant and overland-conveyor system, a concentrator tailings-disposal system and plant ancillary facilities, The major elements of the project include: • A relocatable Fuller-Traylor in-pit 1524-mm (60-in) x 2261-mm (89-in) primary gyratory crusher at the 442 m (1450 ft) mine elevation. The crushing plant has a nominal capacity of 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) of sulfide ore. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 1253-m (4110-ft) long overland belt conveyor, which runs from the in-pit crushing facility to a transfer station serving both the Ray Concentrator and the existing Hayden concentrator railroad load-out facility. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 152-m (500-ft) long stackerbelt conveyor, which delivers a nominal 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore from the transfer station to a 23,600 t (26,000 st) live-capacity coarse-ore stockpile serving the Ray Concentrator. • A nominal 27,200-tpd (30,000-stpd) concentrator, including semiautogenous grinding, flotation, copper concentrate filtration and associated plant ancillary facilities. • A tailings disposal system. Flotation tailings are pumped from the Ray Concentrator to a 122-m (400-ft) diam. thickener, located 4.8 km (3 miles) southeast of the Ray Concentrator site. The thickener overflow is pumped to two 76.2-m (250-ft.) diam. concrete process-water reservoirs. The thickener underflow, at 45% solids, is pumped to a new tailings disposal site located at Elder Gulch. • An HDPE-lined temporary-containment area to collect material from Ray Concentrator plant upsets and local storm-water run-off from a 100-year, 24-hour rain event. •A reclaim-water system from the Elder Gulch tailing pond area to the Ray Concentrator. • A 610-mm (24-in.) diam. x 31.9-km (19.2 mile) long fresh-water pipeline from the Hayden fresh-water-well field system to the Ray Concentrator. The overall process design criteria for the new Ray Concentrator is based on a nominal throughput of 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore at 90% plant availability. However, based on the maximum performance capacity of the installed grinding equipment, it may be possible to achieve a sustained operating level in excess of 36,300 tpd (40,000 stpd) when processing soft ores. Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), the authors showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/tonne of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits. Geospatial analysis identified a total resource of 340 tonnes stored at the 141 sites sampled in this study. While this analysis did not quantify the basin-wide REE inventory, it does indicate the impact that processing cut-off grades will have on the overall AMDp resource base.
