This review work reports the recovery of potassiumfromdifferent rocks and mineral sources. The global demand for potassiumis rising consistently due to the growth of agricultural production. A major portion of the world potassium production is consumed in making of fertiliser; however, other uses include those in pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash minerals (sylvite, kainite and carnallite) in different countries like Canada, USA, Israel and Russia makes them as major potash producers, whereas agricultural-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia including India meet their potassium requirement through import only. On the contrary, the availability of huge potassium-bearing rocks/minerals (like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, glauconitic sandstone) in these countries containing around 4–17% K2O would be a prospective for commercial production of potassium. The potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is very complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. However, the recovery of potassium from hugely available seawater using the chemical precipitation, solvent extraction,membrane separation and ionic exchangemethods is not cost-effective due to the low concentration of potassium.

The White Pine Copper Division of Copper Range Company is a large copper producer operating an underground mine, mill, and smelter on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Principal water discharges are from the tailings basin where these discharges are high in dissolved solids because of mine water pumped into the basin. Principal air emissions are from the smelter where SO2 emissions are uncontrolled. Although water discharges and air emissions have not had significant environmental impacts, environmental regulations could require additional control procedures. Because of low copper prices and poor profitability, cost of compliance with possible new environmental regulations could have serious impact on White Pine with no apparent significant beneficial environmental impacts.

Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge. Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.

To many people, rescue from elevated, sometimes vertical, locations brings about thoughts of heroism mixed with brawn and self-sacrifice. Images are conjured of cliff rescues where the technical effort is hanging from a few seemingly small nylon ropes hundreds of feet above the ground. Such is the vertical realm of technical rope rescue. This is a technical field in which the author serves professionally as battalion chief of (rope) operations for a northern Arizona fire district, and as a private sector instructor to mines in the United States and Canada.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. The Pacific Northwest as defined in this review comprises an exceedingly large and geologically complex terrain that occupies the 'Western Cordillera mobile tectonic belt. This metallogenic province is approximately 2100 miles long and 350 to 500 miles wide. It extends north-northwest from northern California and Nevada, through western Idaho and Montana, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and southwestern Yukon Territory, to southern Alaska, and west from the western flank of the Northern Rocky Mountains to the continental margin (Fig. 1). Many detailed and thorough exploration programs that have been conducted by mining and petroleum companies for over a decade have demonstrated that porphyry-type deposits are both numerous and wide-spread throughout this province. Although the Granby Mining Company extracted about 34 million tons of copper sulfide ore from Copper Mountain during the period 1900-1957, intentional large-scale production of porphyry-type ores was first initiated in 1962. It began at Bethlehem Copper Corporation's East Jersey orebody in the Highland Valley District of south-central British Columbia, approximately eight years after Mr. H. H. Huestis rediscovered that broad zone of copper-molybdenum metallization and recognized its potential significance.

M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

Coal is still a part of energy generation worldwide and has a significant role in the sustainable development of countries. The amount of shallow coal deposits is getting scarce, making efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economies. In underground mining operations, longwall mining is a commonly utilized method to extract deep coal deposits. One of the leading engineering goals in longwall mining is increasing the efficiency of the system by investigating the effects of operational factors on equipment. This paper investigates the shearer performance for a longwall top coal caving operation by discrete event simulation that includes modeling the double-drum shearer, belt conveyors, stage loader, and armored face conveyors (AFC) to evaluate system performance by considering the amount of daily coal production of the shearer. As a result, the most influential factor on mine production is determined and a data-based framework is developed. This study suggests a framework for data collection, data analysis, and the interpretation of the operational data to evaluate the primary production unit’s performance. The models developed for the face coal extraction operations in a longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mine have a bi-directional cutting system and can be implemented in other operations readily.

In late 1989, LAC Minerals purchased 65% of Bond International Gold and as a result became controlling shareholder of the El Indio Mine through Bond and San Jose. El Indio is a world class, complex sulphide gold deposit located in the hydrothermal alteration belt of the Andes mountains in the 4th Region of Chile. The mine is located in the high Andes about 185 km east of La Serena at an elevation of 4000 meters. The 1450 workers at El Indio live in the mine camp at 3200 m and on days off are bussed to La Serena. The El Indio mine was started in 1979 by St. Joe Minerals Corp., bought by Bond in 1987 and subsequently by LAC in 1989. The mine has produced 2.7 million oz. of gold, 9. 5 million oz. of silver and 170,000 t of copper since start of operation. The mill is currently operating at a rate of 2850 t/d and producing a copper/gold concentrate which is roasted to produce a copper/gold calcine and high quality, saleable crude As203• A small proportion of the precious metals are also produced as bullion from the leach circuit. Total production during 1989 was 224,197 ounces of gold, 1,309,342 ounces of silver and 26,968 tonnes of copper. The average cash cost of production for the period was U.S. $96 per ounce of gold, net of by-product credits. The average realized price was $5.30 per ounce of silver and $1.14 per pound of copper.

Minewater from many western U.S. uranium mines often contains radioisotopes in concentrations higher than permissible for discharge to unrestricted areas. .Radium 226 has the lowest permissible concentrations of all radioisotopes and usually greatly exceeds this limit in untreated effluents. This radionuclide is derived from the natural radioactive decay of uranium: [ ] The treating of minewater effluents has been studied previously (1) and the classical removal method for radium has been adsorption on barytes or freshly precipitated barium sulfate. This paper describes the removal of radium from minewater by utilizing a selective complexer based on a crosslinked organic polymer matrix.

A study has been conducted to remove iron from sulfate solutions using Eichrom's Dipexo® extractant, P,P'-di(2ethylhexyl) methanediphosponic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It is found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 106. Over 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion widens the existing four-lane bridgetunnel corridor to eight lanes through construction of two parallel tunnels, interstate widening, and bridge expansions. As part of the design-build contract, a supplemental geotechnical investigation was completed to support the design. The investigation for the subaqueous tunnel segment consisted of over 48,400 linear feet of drilling and 7,100 laboratory tests. This paper discusses the challenges of planning and executing a large-scale geotechnical investigation for underground works in a marine environment and the use of big data for effectively managing, interpreting, and transmitting data to the design-builder consistently throughout the investigation.

The first wagon trail across Loveland Pass was built in 1869 thus starting the struggle between the Colorado Rockies and interstate travel. The 1st Pioneer Bore underneath Loveland Pass at the Continental Divide in Colorado was attempted between 1941 and 1943 and was abandoned due to ground conditions at the Loveland Fault. Construction on the nearby Eisenhower Tunnel began in 1967 and was completed in 1973. Numerous challenges associated with tunneling, including at 11,000 ft were overcome. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the history of investigation and construction challenges associated with the Eisenhower Tunnel to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Many disputes related to environmental issues in mining are resolved through often-antagonistic negotiations in a regulatory context or through litigation. These approaches are certainly the best choices for resolving certain disputes. However, just as no single remediation technology is the right fit for every site, so no single dispute resolution process is the best choice for every situation. This paper introduces a range of dispute resolution alternatives (from collaborative decision making through mediation, arbitration, and litigation). Especially when money is tightest, cost-effective dispute resolution(and the outcomes that can accompany it) can have an impact on the bottom line.

Case histories of water problems in underground mine shafts and tunnels are outlined to illustrate varying degrees of sophistication in grouting techniques currently applied in such construction. The interception of water underground can be one of prior knowledge, i. e., the site investigation provides necessary data to plan a grouting program prior to construction start, or excavations may encounter "changed conditions" or unplanned water. The latter includes catastrophic inflows and emergency situations where the structural integrity of a building or concrete shaft lining are jeopardized. The presentation of this paper outlines some applications of grouting work in underground mine construction throughout the United States in a variety of geological provinces and for a variety of minerals.

Many large. low-grade (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to concentration by conventional flotation practice, Over the past several years Santa Fe Pacific Gold (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat low-grade refractory resources of this type at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.
