Six pioneers of the American mining industry will be inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 16th annual Mining Hall of Fame induction banquet will begin with a reception and open house at 5:30p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The six inductees include James M. Gerstley, the only living member, and George O. Argall, Jr.; John F. “Leadville Johnny” Campion; Charles R. Nailler; Edwin N. Pennebaker and Russell L. Wood.

Next year, in 1964, Butte will celebrate its Centennial. It was in May, 1864, that the first recorded mining activity took place. During that summer, several rich placers were found on Silver Bow Creek and its tributaries, and a gold rush followed. As placer mining proceeded in the creek beds, the quartz lodes on the hillsides were located and the veins were prospected. Mining in Butte entered its second phase when the rich silver mines, the Alice, Moulton, and Lexington, were opened. The silver boom lasted until the decline in the price of silver in the early 1890's forced the closure of many of the mines. An indication of the beginning of the copper mining era in Butte was in 1866 when it was noticed that green copper carbonate discolored some of the, lode material. It was not until ten years later, however, that the Anaconda and St. Lawrence claims were located by Michael and Ed Hickey. The claims were sold in 1880 to Marcus Daly and in 1881, Daly obtained financing and organized the Anaconda Silver Mining Company to exploit the vein The silver venture was a failure because of the predominance of copper which diluted the bullion to only 400 fine.

Experience has shown that, since the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, over-compaction of spoil during the reclamation process has severely limited tree growth on reclaimed land. Researchers at the University of Kentucky have conducted a ten-year investigation at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky that monitored the changes in selected spoil physical characteristics for various reclamation and compaction alleviation methods. More specifically, research plots were developed for reforestation that employed three different levels of compaction and two different methods of ripping for overly compacted spoil. Each year measurements were made in the field of dry bulk density, using a nuclear density gage, and maximum penetration depth, using a recording cone penetrometer. In addition to good correlation between tree growth and selected spoil characteristics, the data demonstrated a gradual convergence of the measured spoil characteristic data over the study period.

The MINER Act of 2006 mandated that all underground coal mines must install and maintain refuge chambers. Refuge chambers serve as a temporary shelter in case of emergency. Several factors affect the performance of a refuge chamber: heat production inside the chamber and introduction of CO when chamber doors are opened are two major factors. This study examines the CO purging process and to determine total air quantity and time necessary to lower the CO con-centration to safe levels for different inlet/outlet configurations using three-dimensional simulation technique. The study uses Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and continuity equations along with the spe-cies transport model assuming uniform air mixing. The heat transfer of any kind is neglected and the purging process is assumed to take place isothermally. The standard k-e model is utilized for simulating turbulence in the flow field. My topic today is our Nation's interest in the minerals beneath the oceans. I will state what I think should be our objectives, the means available to attain these objectives, and the obstacles to their accomplishment. It is possible that as early as this year of 1969 our country must make policy decisions on this subject, and that these, once made, will be almost irreversible. Two factors are hastening an. early decision. First, the 1958 Convention on the Continental Shelf becomes eligible for amendment after June 10, 1969, if the Assembly of the United Nations so decides. Second, the United Nations has created a permanent committee of 42 nations, which was preceded by an ad hoc committee of 35 nations, to study the question of the peaceful uses of the seabed "beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. While these measures purport to deal with the creation of a regime to govern mineral development on the deep sea floor beyond the limits of the jurisdiction of the coastal nations, it has become clear that the urgent issue is the extent to which this future regime shall acquire jurisdiction over the mineral resources of the continental margin, and receive royalties therefrom. This brings the proposal into potential collision with the interests of the coastal nations under the 1958 Convention on the Continental Shelf, including, of course, the United States.

One of the results of the Earth summit (The United Nations Conference) on Environment and Development - UNDP is the statement of forest principles. Others include: the Rio Declaration which is that the human beings are entitled to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature; Agenda 21-for achieving sustainable development in the 21st century; the convention on biological diversity and the frame work convention on climate change. In the preservation of the biological diversity, Government at various levels took series of steps such as legislation, establishment of forest reserves including strict nature reserves, Forest guards, afforestation projects and others. Omo Forest Reserves is one of the Forest reserves owned by the Ogun state Government of Nigeria. It houses the Omo Biosphere Reserve (that is Strict Nature Reserve of International standard). This biosphere reserve is surrounded by buffer zones, which are meant to serves as protection for the biosphere reserves against encroachments. This study showed that the richest plot in term of species composition (that is plot 15 with the species frequency of 123) is almost the least diverse (with Simpson diversity index of 0.9127 which is 0.0238 higher than the least). It could also be established from this study that the diameter size class of trees with the highest frequencies are the lower size classes (5cm-10cm and 10cm -20cm). These results revealed a magnanimous encroachment on the buffer zones, which is an indication of bad status for the Biosphere Reserves as well as against the spirit of the sustainable use of the natural resources.

This paper presents the optimum auxiliary fan(s) location to control air recirculation in dead-end workings where dieselpowered vehicles operate. Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut with varying the intake air quantities using a 30 m3/ s capacity twin 75 kW auxiliary fan and 45 m3/ s capacity twin 110 kW auxiliary fan to control air recirculation and DPM. The results showed that if the drive intake airflow rate matches the fan capacity, air recirculation will occur even when the fan is located 10 m away from the crosscut entry. Results also showed that if the intake drive air quantity was greater than or equal to 150% of fan capacity, no recirculation was observed when the twin 75 kW fan location was at least 5 m and the twin 110 kW fan location was at least 10 m away from the dead-end crosscut access.

Over the last five years, a large number of small to medium sized carbon-in-pulp gold treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 -1,500,000 tpa of ore. In many cases, the primary requirement was to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost, relating to the limited capital resources and tight cash flow positions of these relatively small mining companies. Since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners resulted in an obvious and significant capital cost, most plants were built without thickeners, without doing a detailed cost-benefit analysis on their inclusion, However, the increasing use of High Rate Thickener?s (HRT s) in the mineral processing industries resulted in a reassessment, in some cases, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas, where borefields were costly to install and water was limited. It has become apparent, though, since startup and operation of these installations, that the savings in cyanide consumption is also a very significant factor and can be used as a primary justification for the installation of a HRT in many cases.

The subject of rapid excavation tunneling is one that is extremely important to the people in the Metropolitan area of Chicago. My personal observation is that it is also extremely important to the urban communities around the U.S., to many local and state governments, and to the public officials who are deeply concerned about state affairs and taxes. The Metropolitan Chicago area is in fact, (as are 40 other major urban areas in the U.S.) confronted at the present time with a very serious combined sewer overflow, drainage and pollution problem which accounts for an estimated 40% of the pollutional load on its waterway system. In response to this the District has to date spent some seven millions of dollars in an attempt to find the most economical solution available for the elimination of this problem. This study included extensive investigations of the geological strata, the quantity and quality of storm runoff to be dealt with, and the various methods of storage and treatment available. It has considered solving the overflow problem by a concept involving a series of tunnels, rock tunnels, shafts and storage areas which will collect, retain and subsequently treat that portion of the combined sewer overflow which can be handled in the most cost-effective and economical way, consistent with following the federal and state standards - with which we at the present time agree in principle.

Three transportation and handling alternatives for delivering dry coal combustion residues from power plants to underground coal mines were evaluated technically and economically. The objective was to transport, handle, and inject the residues into the old workings of the mine at a minimum cost. This objective was accomplished in two steps: I) Simulation models were developed and utilized in identifying technically feasible designs in each alternative, 2) Technically feasible designs were economically evaluated to obtain the cost-per-ton of material transported. The designs that provided the minimum cost-per-ton were declared optimal An analysis was conducted for varying distances and tonnages to reveal favorable operating ranges of each alternative.

Coal that meets customer specifications is often stored in silos before being loaded into cars. It is often found that coal in a particular car does not meet customer specifications due to the mixing of coal inside the silo. Some new contracts require meeting specifications on a per car basis. Silo flow models are used to predict quality in such cases. However, coming up with an accurate silo flow model for each case is very difficult and time consuming. This paper examines the viability of using an online analyzer at the loading end of the silo in conjunction with a feedback circuit, to optimize the quality of the coal being loaded into trains, so that each car meets quality specifications.

There are three major components of a fully grouted roof bolt which primarily determine its ability to develop and sustain load: the steel rebar, the resin annulus, and the rock/grout interface. The untensioned, fully grouted roof bolt is subjected to loading only when the surrounding rock deforms. Vertical rock deformation is generally a result of strata sagging and bedding plane separation, whereas horizontal deformation is typically a result of bedding plane sliding. These two types of deformation create different types of internal loads with-in the roof bolt, tensile stress for vertical rock deformations and shear stress for horizontal rock deformations. Also, as a result of the mutual load transfer between the rock and bolt, shear stress will be developed along the grout/rock interface. According to the exact bolt loading conditions, different failure modes may occur: bolt axial failure, bolt shear failure, and shear failure along the grout/rock interface. Understanding these possible failure modes and their root causes is the key to eliminating roof failures in underground mines employing fully grouted resin bolts. Using ABAQUS 5.8, a finite element model was developed to simulate the components of the fully grouted bolt and its interaction with the surrounding roof strata. Several models were conducted to investigate how load transfer occurs between the rock and the bolt under different geological and mining conditions. The effects of bed-ding plane location and properties, and strata sequence on bolt stability were studied. Also, the effects of hole roughness on bolt stability were discussed. Bolt axial failure was not observed within the range of the studied parameters; however, a combination of high overburden depth, a bedding plane located at 2 to 3 ft from the roofline or a low coefficient of friction along the bedding plane caused strata sliding and shears failure in the bolt. Also, in the case of a weak immediate roof, the shear stress at the grout/rock interface could exceed its ultimate capacity lead to slippage.

Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout's instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

Introduction Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the operating company for a consortium of industry and government participants that produce synthetic crude oil from their leases in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Production from the $2.3 billion (1978) integrated mining, extraction, and bitumen upgrading and utility complex started in September 1978. Production is currently about 6.4 Mm3/a (40 million bbl per year) of high quality synthetic crude oil. This is done by upgrading the extracted bitumen from the oil sands mined. Plans are to increase the production to 8 Mm3/a (50 million bbl pier year) by 1989. At that time, the mining operation will be required to deliver 100 Mt/a (110 million stpy) of oil sand (ore) to the extraction plants, and handle quantities of waste ranging from 50 to 75 Mt/a (55 to 83 million stpy). The Syncrude plant is located at Mildred Lake, 40 km (25 miles) north of Fort McMurray and 480 km (300 miles) north of Edmonton, Alberta. Climate, particularly winter, is therefore a major factor affecting the design and operation of all the Syncrude production facilities. Bitumen production, consisting of overburden removal, oil/sand mining, bitumen extraction, and tailings disposal, account for about half the total SCO production costs. Considerable research and development, therefore, continues to be applied to improve both material handling and bitumen recovery methods. Potential applications for feeder breakers were identified in the material handling aspects of both overburden and oil sand mining to reduce cost and to attain planned production increments. Overburden removal Overburden materials on the leases comprise thin Pleistocene sands, gravel and fill, and sands, silts and clays of the thicker Clearwater Formation with the silt to clay components predominating. The latter contains multiple leases of hard siltstone with unconfined compressive strengths up to 148 MPa and thicknesses up 0.1 to 0.9 m (1 to 3ft). Characteristics of the overburden as well as the climatic environment and scale of operation present unique problems for the efficient removal of the material. In a bucketwheel/conveyor system, the weak silty clay formations require relatively flat working slopes for safe operation, while the siltstone lenses and frozen overburden require blasting or selective removal by other equipment. These factors, combined with the normal bucketwheel/conveyor design parameters, lead to high capital investment and relatively inefficient use of that capital. Despite the abundance of solid mineral deposits, Nigeria only earns about 0.5-1% of its current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the solid minerals sector. This is as a result of the dominance of the oil and gas industry, which has negatively affected the competitiveness of other sectors of Nigeria’s economy. The dominance of this industry has resulted in unemployment, poverty, hunger, domestic price inflation, corruption, unstable government, and higher exchange rates. These impacts are typical for economies suffering from the effects of "Dutch Disease" and the "Resource Curse". Community-based small-scale mining offers hope as an economic activity that can create wealth, employment, reduce hunger and poverty, and provide basic amenities for rural communities with solid minerals endowment. This study presents preliminary results of ongoing research into the prospects of using community-based small-scale mining in a developing country like Nigeria to move towards rural sustainable development.

Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is absolutely critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally-sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty, mineral exploration will be severely eroded, resulting in reduced possibility of discovering and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by First Nations and the mineral sector can provide this increased business certainty and social and economic benefits for local First Nations. As a sector, we face many challenges in regard to building relationships with First Nations. The root solution to addressing these challenges lies in recognizing and understanding the unique cultural differences that exist between indigenous people and the business community. From the Canadian perspective, the First Nations culture differs vastly from non-Aboriginal culture. It is equally as imperative that cultural differences be acknowledged and respected at home as they are when seeking business opportunities in other countries. The traditional “business” approaches and relationships that one understands and incorporates with one’s contractors, legal counsel, investors and Board are generally not be the best approach for the introductory and subsequent meetings with indigenous peoples. This paper is written from the perspective of my experiences accumulated over the past ten years, first as Manager of Aboriginal Affairs for one of the largest forest companies in British Columbia and now, as President and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC). My opinions are not necessarily endorsed by AME BC. Before the gritty issues of consultation and benefit sharing are dealt with, it is worthwhile to clear up the confusion surrounding terminology. “Indigenous Peoples” is used in a global context; “Aboriginal Peoples” is used in the Canadian context therefore includes Métis, Inuit and First Nations Peoples. The term “First Nations”, in the context of British Columbia, perhaps has its roots in the fact that treaties have largely not been settled. Therefore it is important to reaffirm that British Columbia was not discovered. First Nations have resided in British Columbia since time immemorial.

The industrial vision system provides on-line 2D particle size analysis for aggregate slurries in both the overflow and underflow of hydrocyclones. This paper covers required vision system features allowing CCD cameras to function in the harsh environment of a mine milling area. The study conducted demonstrates the system’s capacity to obtain particle size distributions for controlling hydrocyclonic separators. The particle size distribution is obtained within seconds and immediately updated to allow for process adjustments. Results are then provided as a graphical computer generated display or output as a 4-20mA current loop for process control. The primary use of the vision system is in classifying particles in cyclone overflows which are often a few microns in size. Typical size information for actual mine slurry samples are presented and possible control schemes discussed.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2012 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2012: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2012 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the publicly available health and safety policies of 26 mining companies to determine the quantity of health and safety (H&S) practices that mining companies encourage in relation to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. A thematic content analysis of the policies identified elements and practices within the text. On average, companies communicated information on about 7 elements (range 1–14, standard deviation = 3.49) and discussed 15 practices (range 2–34, standard deviation = 9.13). The elements in which companies highlighted the most practices were risk management, emergency management, leadership development, and occupational health. A discussion of the policy trends shows areas that mine sites can improve upon within their Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, in addition to encouraging the use of both leading and lagging indicators to manage health and safety performance. INTRODUCTION Mining companies and their employees are expected to identify and manage risks at their worksites to ensure the health and safety (H&S) of everyone at the site. The primary mechanism in place to control these risks is a company’s health and safety management system (HSMS) (Boyle, 2012). Broadly, an HSMS is a set of standard, interrelated, and interacting elements used to promote and achieve occupational H&S goals (ANSI/AIHA Z-10, 2012; BS OHSAS 18001, 2007). The practices conveyed within an HSMS are expected to minimize incidents, injuries, illnesses, and even save worker lives (Alsop and LeCouteur, 1999; Arocena and Núñez, 2010). In the United States, both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulate and encourage aspects of an HSMS (US Federal Register, 2011, 2010). Many HSMS documents (i.e., Chemical Industries Association, 1995; Health and Safety Executive [HSE], 1995; International Labour Office [ILO], 2001) attribute the source of their basic management system to Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model of continuous quality improvement and organize their practices within this cycle (Johnson, 2002). The PDCA cycle is a well-adopted approach in health and safety management and promotes continuous learning and adaptability (Robson et al., 2007)."

Central Alaska contains a wide variety of pre-, syn-, and post -accretionary mineral deposits that are related to the growth and evolution of the north-west North American continental margin. Withinpre-accretionary terranes, the Devonian-Carboniferous, carbonate platform-hosted MVT zinc-lead deposits of the Kandik and Reef Ridge districts in central Alaska, and the Devonian-Mississippian volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) polymetallic deposits of the Bonnifield, and Delta mineral belts of eastern Interior Alaska have received the most exploration interest to date. Syn-accretionary rift related, mafic and ultramafic sill swarms and zoned plutons of the Kluane-Nikolai igneous belt are currently being explored for Ni-Cu-Co-PGE deposits. Syn-accretionary granitoid complexes in the PurcellMountains, Illinois Creek, and Sitylemenkat areas have been explored for uranium-REE-gold, and tin-silver mineralization respectivelyPost-accretionary granitoid intrusions and associated volcanic fields that range in age from mid-Cretaceous to early Tertiary contain significant gold-silver-polymetallic resources in the East Central Alaska, Hogatza, and Kuskokwim Mineral belts. Collectively the three main post-accretionary plutonic/volcanic belts of central Alaska are part of the Tintina Gold Province, where exploration since 1990has identified about 848 tonnes gold.
