"Nickel electroplating from sulphate electrolyte is an efficient process. To achieve good quality cathode, however, parameters such as temperature, nickel concentration, pH, electrode alignment, electrolyte flowrate and additives must be optimised, because these affect cathode morphology and current efficiency. It is also important to control the clarity and contamination of the electrolyte, as these have a considerable effect on the quality of the cathode surface. Delamination, surface roughness and pitting on the cathode surface can be caused by incorporation of solid particles or impurities form the electrolyte. Three types of solid particles were investigated: cuprous selenide, barium/ lead sulphate (co-precipitated) and ferric hydroxide. These particles can be found in industrial electrolytes, especially if there is a problem with the filtration step or contaminants have reacted to form insoluble particles. A rotating cylinder Hull cell was used for this investigation. It is found that the effects on morphology depend on the type of solid, concentration, particle size, current density and electrolyte flowrate. Cuprous selenide is the most detrimental, especially at higher concentrations, higher current densities and low flowrates. Increased rotational speed offers a uniform sheet of fine gas bubbles across the surface of the cathode which reduces the thickness of the diffusion layer of liquid adjacent to the cathode and increases the rate of mass transport to the cathode from the bulk liquid. INTRODUCTION Electrowinning operations are important when recovering associated by-products of nickel production, such as copper, cobalt and zinc, from pressure leach solutions. The base metal mineralization associated with platinum-group metal (PGM) production yields significant quantities of copper and nickel as by-products. The base metal refinery is vital in PGM processing as it increases the PGM concentration from mined ore by a factor of 400, in comparison with concentration by flotation (20 times) and pyrometallurgical processing (20 times) (Crundwell et al., 2011). Anglo American Platinum Ltd produces nickel cathodes by electrowinning and purges sodium from the base metal refinery in the form of sodium sulphate at the Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR), as shown in Figure 1. This is the Sherritt acid leach process used in most base metal refineries to ensure no loss of PGMs and shows the subsequent purification steps for copper and nickel. Other refineries in Zimbabwe, such as Bindura and Empress, use the Outokumpu leach process (Pavlides, 2001)."

The bulk of plain carbon steel is produced through conventional Basic Oxygen or Electric Arc Furnace routes where the development of the AC Ladle Furnace has made it possible to also produce alloy steels. Smaller Ladle Furnaces have limitations such as lower efficiency; high electrode consumption and diminutive yields rendering them uneconomical to operate and making the processing of low carbon steel grades difficult due to carbon pick up. The demand for special steels and alloys with strict specifications is increasing while commodity prices remain competitive. The production of special steels and alloys have specific process control requirements and the development of the induction melting furnace (IMF) has made it possible to produce smaller batches economically. Refining and alloying of the melt in the IMF further enhance the efficiency. The INDUREF furnace offers increased productivity and flexibility through increased thermal efficiency and can be utilised for holding molten metal for further processing such as granulating, atomising, nitriding, alloy additions and desulphurisation of Ferro-alloys and steels. The system utilises a specially engineered ladle which is placed in an induction-heating assembly comprised of a stationary water-cooled copper coil and lamination packs. The addition of equipment for vacuum degassing and decarburisation of steels and alloys is also feasible. Benefits are: ? No electrode consumption or carbon pick-up ? The present paper deals with mixing between the metal and slag phase during the ladle refining process, including vacuum degassing. Dispersion of metal drops in ladle slags has been studied. The results show a larger quantity of metal droplets in ladle slag during the alloying and stirring phase than during the subsequent vacuum degassing phase. The thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the interaction between metal drops and the slag matrix have been considered and probable reasons for the observed distribution discussed.

In the first part of the article, the authors give a broad overview of the chemistry and some engineering aspects of bioleach processes, eventually leading to the important and critical issue of the stability of arsenic-containing residues, especially those derived from bioleaching of sulphidic gold ores. In the section ?Factors affecting arsenic stability? they give an excellent summary of the factors normally affecting the stability of such residues. This is followed by some valid comments on the suitability of a single leach test to evaluate the long-term stability of solid waste streams. However, they fail to mention that, up till now, no tests procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. Their own method is no exception, although, like many others, it is useful to identify potential problems with solid wastes considered for disposal.

Namakwa Sands aims to conserve environmental resources and prevent or minimize environmental impacts from its operations. The challenge faced by Namakwa Sands is the rehabilitation of the arid winter rainfall Strandveld and lowland Succulent Karoo vegetation zones affected by its mining activities. Extensive experimentation with different rehabilitation methods resulted in the development of an effective rehabilitation programme. The use of topsoil as a seed bank and shade-cloth as windbreaks have significantly aided the rehabilitation process. The aim of the programme is to stabilize the soil environment so as to allow the germination and development of the local plant species. The ability to control wind erosion is critical to the success of the rehabilitation effort. A programme of biodiversity audits has been started to measure the recovery of plant species in the rehabilitated area. The principle of continuous improvement, coupled to site-specific rehabilitation studies, is applied to enhance the rehabilitation programme.

The Rossio railway tunnel was built in 1890 crossing several formations involving limestones, basalts and also sandy and clayey formations. Due to the fact that it is an old underground structure rehabilitation and repair works were performed, namely at Km 0,900 and in a zone crossed by a new tunnel from the Lisbon Metro. Reinforcement support systems were designed in the Rossio tunnel in order to prevent its stability. In this paper, repair works and anchor tests performed at km 0,900 are presented, as well as the monitoring system implemented in order to observe the structural effects induced by the construction of the works. For the interpretation of the obtained information complex 3D models was built, permitting the simulation of the sequential excavation scheme used, non-linear behaviour of the different formations, and the support systems used. Der 1890 erbaute Rossio Eisenbahntunnel durchoertert mehrere Formationen, einschliesslich einer Kalkstein-, Basalt- sowie einer sandigen und tonigen Formation. Auf Grund des Alters des unterirdischen Bauwerks wurden Instandsetzungs- und Reparaturarbeiten im Bereich km 0,900 sowie im Kreuzungsbereich mit einem neuen Tunnel der Lissabonner U-Bahn durchgeführt. Aussteifungssysteme wurden entworfen, um die Stabilität des Rossio Tunnels zu gewährleisten. Im Folgenden werden die Instandsetzungsarbeiten und Anker Tests im Bereich km 0,900 sowie das Messystem zur Ueberwachung der strukturellen Auswirkungen der Bauarbeiten dargestellt. Zur Interpretation der gewonnenen Informationen wurden komplexe 3D Modelle entwickelt, die eine Simulation des Bauablaufs und die Anwendung nichtlinearer Stoffgesetze fuer die verschiedenen Formationen und Aussteifungssysteme ermöglichten. Le Tunnel ferroviaire du Rossio a été construit en 1890, traversant des différents terrains comme des calcaires, des basaltes et aussi des formations limoneuses et sableuses. Dû à l’ancienneté de l’ouvrage, des travaux de réhabilitation et réparation ont été faits, nomment au km 0,900 et dans la zone traversée par le nouveau tunnel du Metro de Lisbonne. Des systèmes de support renforcé ont été conçus pour le Tunnel du Rossio de façon à rassurer sa stabilité. Dans ce papier, on présente les travaux de réparation et les essais d’ancrage réalisés au km 0,900, et aussi, le système d’auscultation mise au point pour l’observation des effets structuraux induits par les travaux. De façon à interpréter l’information résultant de l’observation, des modèles 3D complexes ont été utilisés, permettant la simulation de la méthode séquentielle de l’excavation, du comportement non - linéaire du terrain et, aussi les systèmes de support utilisés.

Historically, mine ventilation practices as it was referred to then and which was enforced by legislation of those days, focused primarily on the conditions in the working place and little attention given to actual exposures of workers to contaminants in the working environments. With the advent of the Leon Commission of Inquiry into Safety and Health in the South African Mining industry in 1994, findings in the report indicated that more attention should be given to occupational health of workers. The upshot of this report resulted in the promulgation of the new Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) with certain sections of it devoted to all the aspects of occupational medicine and occupational hygiene. This paper describes the present situation with regards to statistics on occupational hygiene performance and compensation paid out to persons who have contracted occupational diseases, as well as the way forward in terms of legislation implemented in September 2002 on the chronic and acute issues affecting the mining industry in SA.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, platinum Mortimer Smelter is one of the three smelting operations in the Anglo Platinum Group. It is located in the Limpopo Province, approximately 100 km north of Rustenburg, and approximately 15 km west of Northam. The smelter operation is the smallest of the three smelting operations in the group, with a smelting capacity of 170 kt/annum. The operation consists of a Larox filtration plant, a Drytech flash drying plant, a modified Elkem / Hatch 19.5 MVA furnace, and a 60 t/h matte crushing plant. The operation does not convert its furnace matte, and hence the final sulphide rich matte is transported to and processed further at the Anglo Platinum Converting Process (ACP) within the Waterval Smelter Complex in Rustenburg. Furnace slag is granulated, and processed through a slag mill, or transported to a slag dump.

Almost all the ore deposits of ferrous, non-ferrous and rare metals of Kazakstan, are exploiting by the open-cast method, are the complex-structural, multi-component ones. Their rational working requires precise organization of extracting works. In this connection it is necessary to set up the best intercommunications between drilling-blasting, excavating-loading and transport works. This requires the stable functioning of the quarry for dispatch of ore raw material of required quality with minimum of corresponding expenses. For this purpose, proceeding from the quarry’s ore output and the assumed parameters of the exploitation system, the first problem about rational arrangement of excavating-loading equipment in extracting faces is solved. By solving the problem the model with dynamic, adapting properties had been used. It was solved numerically by the method of statistical tests. By setting up the necessary link between type-sizes of excavating-loading and transport equipment, the minimum prime cost of loading and transportation of 1 ton of mining mass from the face to the receiving station was adopted as the criterion of optimality. Depending on the type of excavating-loading equipment, the efficiency function may be different. By using wheel loaders, their displacement between the faces is possible, therefore, the efficiency function of the problem may include expenses for their displacement. By using excavators like power shovel, the problem’s restrictions must exclude its displacement between the faces. The efficiency function consists of minimum expenses for loading, proceeding from set of volumes of extraction from the faces, satisfying required quality. The volumes of extraction from the faces, satisfying required quality of ore in output stream, are determined by the method of statistical tests. Sample range is given, proceeding from the restrictions for maximum productivity of the excavating-loading equipment. Volumes of extraction, not satisfying required quality, are cut off. The efficiency function meaning is then determined and minimized. Keywords: Anglo American, Anglo Platinum Ltd, Waterval, Mortimer, Polokwane, ACP, pyrometallurgy, platinum, PGMs Anglo Platinum Ltd is the largest primary platinum producer in the world and operates three smelters in South Africa: Waterval, Mortimer and Polokwane. The operational details of the smelters are covered in previous reviews, thus only unit operations that have been upgraded are discussed. The most significant of the upgrades include the installation of a second ACP converter at Waterval Smelter in 2006 and the anticipated upgrade of Mortimer Smelter to 38MW in 2011. Several advances have been made in the smelting operations to improve the furnace stability and longevity. Control of the chromium input to each of the smelters has substantially allowed continued operations at levels below the spinel saturation point in slag, which results in lowered matte and slag temperatures. Mogalakwena concentrate, arising from the Platreef ore, is used to dilute high chromium-containing concentrates. In addition, furnace controls have improved in terms of crucible temperature and condition monitoring, improved feeding control, management of alarms and trips and having the quality of instrumentation and operational rigour required to support this. Advances have been made on the ACP converter in terms of good converter matte quality, and increased intensity and efficiency of operation. Combined with improvements to both the conventional and tower sulfuric acid plants, the emissions from Waterval Smelter have been reduced substantially since the introduction of the ACP. This is in spite of increasing metal throughput. The Anglo Platinum Ltd smelting operations have made significant progress since 2006 and further advances are envisaged to further improve on safety, reduce costs, increase efficiencies and throughput, while reducing emissions.

ABSTRACT: The paper is devoted to two major aspects related to the abandonment of salt mines: 1)- Long-term risk associated with the mechanical instability of surface and its consequences for public security and properties. 2)- Long term dissolution and transport of salt resulting from its communication with groundwater. Basic characteristic features of salt deposits and mining methods are presented through the studies already undertaken on French mines. This analysis allows to identify major hazards encountered in different traditional salt mines and solution-mining cavities. In particular, the role of overburden (presence and thickness of salt layer in exploitation roof, presence of clayey rocks or hard rocks e.g. dolomite or anhydrite), presence of water-bearing strata and possibly natural brine levels, discontinuities, etc. are discussed. In the second part, the main features of mechanical behaviour of salt (creep, damage) as well as transfer processes of this material are presented. The influence of these aspects on the long term evolution of abandoned salt mines is then analysed. KEY WORDS: exploitation, abandonment, salt, mechanical, stability, transport, solution, brine. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel bezieht sich auf zwei bedeutende Aspekte beim Salzabbau: 1)-Das langsfristige Risiko zur Bodenoberflächeunbeständigkeit und sein Einfluss über Mensch= und Gütersicherheit. 2)-Die langsfristige Auflösung und Beförderung des Salz beruhen sich auf Studien über französiche Bergbauen. Diese Analyse emöglicht es, die bedeutendesten Risiken in verschiedenen Salzgruben zu identifizieren, bzw. Traditionellen oder durch Auflösung abgebauten. Insbesondere wird die Rolle des Deckgebirges (Vorhandensein und Dicke von Salzschicht am Dach des Grube, Beisein von Tanlager oder hartem Gestein wie Bitterkalk oder Anhydrid), Beisein von wasserhaltigem Boden und/oder gesalzenen Wasserflächen, Trennflächen, usw… erötert. Im zweiten Teil werden die haupsächlichen Eigenschaften des Salzverhaltens (Kriechen und Beschädigung) beschrieben. RESUME: L’article est consacré à deux aspects majeurs liés à l’abandon d’exploitations de sel : 1)- Le risque d’une instabilité à long terme de la surface du sol et son incidence sur la sécurité des personnes et des biens. 2)- La dissolution à long terme et le transport de sel sous l’effet d’une communication avec des eaux souterraines. Les principales caractéristiques de gisements et d’exploitations de sel sont présentées en s’appuyant sur les études antérieures réalisées sur les exploitations en France. Cette analyse permet d’identifier les risques majeurs rencontrés dans différentes mines de sel traditionnelles ou exploitées par dissolution. En particulier, le rôle du recouvrement (présence et épaisseur d’un banc de sel au toit de l’exploitation, présence de terrains argileux ou de roches dures telles que la dolomie ou de l’anhydrite), présence de terrains aquifères ou de nappes salées éventuelles, discontinuités, etc. sont discutées. Dans la deuxième partie, les principaux traits du comportement mécanique du sel (fluage, endommagement) ainsi que les processus de transport de ce matériau sont présentés. L’influence de ces aspects sur le comportement à long terme d’exploitations abandonnées de sel est ensuite analysée. "Direct cobalt electrowinning was developed to produce unrefined cobalt metal as an alternative to producing a mixed hydroxide product (MHP), which is the common cobalt intermediate product in African Copperbelt operations. MHP is preferred due to the high cost of producing high-grade cobalt cathode. Direct cobalt electrowinning test work results have shown that the purity of the unrefined cobalt metal produced from a low-grade copper solvent-extraction raffinate stream was ~97% (w/w), which is significantly higher than the MHP purity (up to 45% (w/w) Co). The current study investigates whether direct cobalt electrowinning would increase the profitability of African Copperbelt copper–cobalt oxide operations, when compared with the MHP flowsheet. An order-of-magnitude economic evaluation was conducted using dynamic differential discounted cash flow models on a “bare-bones” basis, using a 10% discount rate. Three variables were evaluated, namely; reagent utilisation extents, precipitation extents and filter-press wash efficiency. Multivariable risk analysis was also conducted using the Monte Carlo simulation technique to understand the impact of key project drivers. The financial study results indicated that a direct cobalt electrowinning flowsheet could potentially result in a higher mean net present value (NPV) compared with the MHP flowsheet. Cobalt recovery was found to have the most significant impact on the NPV. In addition to increased profitability of African Copperbelt operations, direct cobalt electrowinning has the potential to reduce the environmental footprint of operations as well as addressing the Democratic Republic of Congo government’s drive towards export of higher value metal products instead of low-grade intermediates."

Reagents are added to the flotation process of Merensky Reef ores to achieve specific functions that enable the separation of valuable minerals from gangue minerals on the basis of the difference in their surface properties. However, due to the complexity of the process, the various interactions that occur as well as the incomplete liberation of the ore and range of minerals present, it is difficult to quantify the behaviour of each of the reagents. More specifically, changes made to achieve a particular outcome may have secondary effects that can override the desired effect. If all the effects and interactions can be accounted for, it is possible to manipulate reagent suites and obtain better overall metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the effect of the addition of copper sulphate at different operating points of the recovery of the sulphide minerals. Batch flotation tests indicated that the recovery of chalcopyrite was not affected when operating conditions were varied, whereas pentlandite recovery was strongly affected by the point of reagent addition, and pyrrhotite recovery was enhanced by copper sulphate addition, irrespective of the point of addition, with the extent being dependent on the ore source. Floatable gangue was activated by copper sulphate in the presence of the dithiophosphate collector. Froth stability was also affected by copper sulphate addition.

Pt-Al-X alloys have shown good mechanical properties and adequate oxidation resistance. Starting from a promising Pt-Al-Cr alloy, the influence of Ni additions was investigated. After ageing finely dispersed precipitates are observed. Nb, Ta, Ti and Re increase strength when added as partial substitute for Al. Minor additions of B increase creep resistance and rupture time remarkably, owing to strengthening of the grain boundaries. The evolution of the alloy development programme as well as selected properties of the multi-component Pt-base alloys are presented.

Rock engineering is concerned with the design of rock structures generated by mining activities. Therefore, rock engineering designs have major implications for the safe recovery of mineral deposits and operating costs. The paper deals with a few challenges facing rock mechanics engineers operating in the hard rock underground mining environment in South Africa. Finally, examples are included, which may assist rock mechanics engineers in providing better designs, which could ultimately lead to further improvement in safety and lower operating costs.

ABSTRACT: The proposed paper is aimed at analysing the failure of a steep cliff slope that, in the past, was exploited for open pit mining operations. A volume of over 400,000m3 of gneissic aplitic rock was involved in the slope failure. An evaluation of possible failure mechanisms is given, based on a structural description of the rock mass, a mechanical characterisation and on computation methods. The block theory and limit equilibrium techniques for sliding and block toppling were applied and a comparison is given with the result obtained by using DEM models. RESUME: Le document proposé vise l’analyse des mécanismes de rupture d’une falaise qui a été intéressée dans le passé par une mine à ciel ouvert. Un volume supérieur à 400.000 m3 de aplite-gneiss a été concerné par la rupture de la falaise. Le document fournit une évaluation des possibles mécanismes de rupture, basée sur une description structurale de l’amas rocheu, une caractérisation mécanique et des méthodes de calcul numérique. L’analyse a été développée à l’aide de la théorie des blocs et de la technique de l’équilibre limite, soit pour le glissement que pour le basculement des blocs, et une comparaison avec le résultat obtenu par application des modèles DEM a été effectuée. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die vorgeschlagene Arbeit zielt darauf ab, den Einsturz einer steilen Felswand zu analysieren, an der in der Vergangenheit eine Mine im Übertageabbau betrieben wurde. Der Einsturz betraf ein Volumen von über 400000 m3 an Gneis und Aplit. In der Arbeit ist eine Einschätzung des möglichen Mechanismus angegeben, der zum Bruch geführt hat, und sie basiert auf einer strukturellen Beschreibung der Felsmasse, einer mechanischen Charakterisierung sowie auf der Anwendung von Berechnungsmethoden. Angewandt wurden die Blocktheorie und die Methode der Gleichgewichtsgrenze für das Abrutschen und Kippen von Blöcken. Darüber hinaus wird ein Vergleich mit den Ergebnissen angestellt, die unter Verwendung von DEM-Modellen erzielt wurden.

Outline This paper will consider the implications of the mine closure provisions set out in the new Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and draft regulations. A comparison will be made with the existing provisions in the Minerals Act and the mine closure policy of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME). The paper will consider whether the new provisions have the potential for improving performance as regards mine closure. It will investigate the financial provisions requirements and the implications of these provisions for mines. It will consider the requirements for a social and labour plan and consider the implications of this for mine closure and its funding. It will analyse the provisions relating to the transfer of environmental liabilities to third parties and consider the implications of this in the case of closing mines and non-closing mines. Finally it will consider the issue of residual legal liability of a mining company once a closure certificate has been issued.

A proper management system of coal mine methane gas associated with underground mining activities is essential for the mine safety due to its nature of explosion. Optimum design of the mine ventilation and gas drainage need accurate prediction of gas flow rate emitted by mining activities. Permeability to gas, which is affected by stress conditions of surrounding rock mass, governs the emission rate of the gases. JCOAL has developed a three dimensional FEM simulation program named Mine Gas Flow 3D (MGF-3D). MGF-3D is designed to predict the volume of methane gas emitted from surrounding coal and rock seams based on stress distribution and permeability change which are determined by 3D stress analysis. In MGF-3D, stress change and/or expansion of fractured zone affected by mining is calculated at the first and then gas emission into roadways and longwall panels under the determined stress conditions is calculated using Darcy’s law. MGF-3D also can set up a number of pre-drainage holes and estimate drainage gas volume from each hole. This function makes MGF-3D remarkable program. These simulations for gas emission can contribute to mine gas utilization plan. Comparison between actual measurement of gas emission in the underground mine and simulation results has been performed and availability for the mine safety and problems with MGF-3D are discussed in this report.
