Effective perimeter control during drilling and blasting is critical not only to blasting results but also to the overall stability of the pit over its entire life span. A pit where perimeter control is not given enough attention when conducting drilling and blasting operations, often experiences over-break or back break beyond final pit wall limits, and therefore has a relatively high probability of failure. Such a pit also becomes unsafe, sometimes not easily accessible, has increased loading costs due to production of oversize, longer cycle times and often problems are encountered when blasting subsequent benches. All these are undesirable consequences, which have negative cost implications. Specialised blasting techniques such as trim blasting and pre-splitting have over the years proved to be effective perimeter control measures. However, the success of these techniques is directly attributable to the time and effort given to the processes. This paper presents results of a project undertaken to monitor, review and optimize the trim blasting and pre-splitting processes at Orapa Diamond Mine in Botswana. The project was specifically incepted to improve the final wall conditions, which continued to deteriorate due to persistent over-break during blasting. The paper also analyses the results obtained against a benchmark of results taken prior to project implementation. Specific blast design parameters which are critical to blasting results were identified as problem areas after auditing of the pre-implementation drilling and blasting practices. These include drill-hole depth, spacing, splitting factor for pre-splits and timing of trim blasts. The impact of different rock types on the results was also studied, and recommendations were made at different phases of the project and results obtained after implementation analysed until optimum results were achieved.

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore bodies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

Corrosion of copper in aerated acidic chloride pickling (0.5 M HCl) solutions and its inhibition by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol (ATT) have been investigated using electrochemical techniques and weight-loss measurements, along with Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements for copper after varied immersion periods of 0, 24 and 48h showed that the presence of ATT and the increase of its concentration significantly decrease cathodic, anodic, corrosion (jCorr) currents and corrosion rates (KCorr), as well as the dissolution currents at 300 mV vs. Ag/AgCl, while increase polarization resistance (Rp), degree of surface coverage (?) and inhibition efficiency (IE%) to a great extent. Weight-loss measurements after different immersion periods of 6 ~ 48h revealed that the dissolution of copper decreased to a minimum and the corresponding IE% increased with ATT concentration increases. The detection of ATT molecules on the copper surface by Raman spectroscopy indicated that inhibition of copper corrosion is achieved by strong adsorption of ATT molecules onto the copper surface. The South African mineral resource royalty system, initiated in 2010, employs a hybrid ad valorem approach tied to profitability ratios. This rate is then applied to the total revenue from mineral sales. In this article we explore how the profitability ratio in the mineral resource royalty formulae interacts with the gold tax formula as applied to South African gold mines, devising a strategy for cut-off grade optimization. The study focuses on nine narrow, tabular-reef (Witwatersrand) gold mines. The approach involves a mixed-integer cut-off grade optimizer utilizing Excel Solver, incorporating relevant royalty and income tax formulae. Different mineral resource royalty cost scenarios were examined. Ignoring these costs in the break-even analysis lowers the cut-off grade but slightly boosts profits compared to considering expected costs. The developed optimizer model, recognizing the profitability aspect of the mineral resource royalty and income tax formulae, yielded a 6% lower cut-off grade than the base case. This is significant for increasing mine life. While the profit differences are marginal (0.2% compared to the break-even base case), substantial improvements were noted: a 6% increase in stope tons above cut-off grade, and a 4% rise in total revenue. Enhanced resource utilization (3% extra gold kilograms) reduces necessary development and overall costs, allowing for a reduction in the cut-off grade and ultimately, more profit.

Aluminium AA1200 was laser alloyed with a combination of nickel and titanium diboride using different weight ratios. Chemical reactions took place with the formation of different phases. The characterization of the alloyed surfaces was carried out by x-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopes. The alloyed surfaces are composed of the initial phase of Al-Ni dendrites and eutectics of TiB2/Al and TiB2/Ni distributed on the initial phase. Experimental results obtained showed that Al-Ni intermetallics brought about a significant increase in the hardness property of Al; however, these intermetallics are highly brittle and prone to fail by brittle fracture or stress corrosion cracking when put in service. The addition of TiB2 brought about a reduction in the formation of the seintermetallic phases. A microhardness increase of over 10 times the hardness of the substrate was achieved. Safety in South African mines is a subject of significant interest, since many mining companies are experiencing production deficits due to safety-related stoppages. In this paper, safety data from the South African platinum mining sector is analysed for the period 2006 to 2010. The data was obtained from company annual reports as well as the Department of Mineral Resources, and analysis in the study is limited to injury and fatality data only. The overall safety performances of companies in the sector are compared, and opportunities for benchmarking and recognising potential sources of best practice amongst platinum miners are identified. Improving safety usually incurs a cost, and mining companies are particularly conscious of the importance of controlling costs. However, cost considerations often deal only with direct costs, and it has been shown that indirect costs are usually far more significant. Therefore, a greater safety spend will usually result in the creation of value for the mine since it will reduce the indirect costs associated with accidents. The results of some recent research in this area are presented. In this light, where available, the financial performances of mining companies in the sector, obtained from published annual results, are included in the benchmarking exercise to determine whether there is any correlation with safety performance.

"Coal fines produced during processing are difficult to dewater and result in a lower quality product and consequent lower value. A South African coal mine experiences severe difficulties with belt filter dewatering operations due to the presence of fines reporting from the thickener underflows. Plant 2 currently handles super-fine particles of size -34 µm and has low belt filter efficiency: excessive moisture retention lowers the product quality and strains downstream processing. It was necessary to determine an alternative method for dewatering these fines. Blending of fine material with coarser material was proposed as a solution. The effect of coal particle size and layering during ultrafines belt filter dewatering was evaluated using various blends of the fine Plant 2 material with coarser Plant 1 material. The best layering arrangement of the two materials and its optimum blend required to achieve reduced filter cake moisture content was determined in practise using a vacuum filter to simulate belt filtration. A blend of the two materials gave improved dewatering efficiency for the belt filters compared with that of the Plant 2 material alone. The best layering configuration was with Plant 2 material at the bottom and Plant 1 material on top. The optimum blend for industrial applications comprised 48% fines from Plant 2. IntroductionFines are produced during the processing of coal. It is estimated that 2 to 3% of run-ofmine coal reports to the ultrafine portion (-100 µm) (le Roux, 2005). The particle size of coal is inversely proportional to the amount of water adsorption, so smaller particles adsorb more moisture. Moisture removal requires either mechanical processes or thermal drying: mechanical processes are less expensive, but the fines still have high moisture retention. Discarding of fines leads to economic losses, so it is essential that they be dewatered so that they can then be sold as a product: fines need to be treated for both resource management and conservation reasons (Kenney, 1994). Removal of free surface moisture from ultrafine coal particles using a belt filter therefore remains a process that needs to be continuously improved. Ultrafine coal originating from a thickener underflow is known to be difficult to dewater owing to factors such as filter cloth blockage and moisture retention due to clogging. Mixing of finer and coarser materials has been proposed to deliver better dewatering efficiency and improved the quality of the recycled water (Kenney, 1994)."

"Although oxygen is widely employed as the oxidant of choice in gold leaching by cyanide, its low aqueous solubility presents some drawbacks in practical application; hydrogen peroxide has therefore been considered as a possible alternative. The aim of this investigation was to study the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which generates an oxidizing intermediate species, and to understand its effect on cyanide destruction. Operating conditions that facilitated the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide were established by varying the pH and catalyst type and concentration. The oxidizing intermediate, detected using an indirect technique, was found to be the hydroxyl radical (OH?). OH? is commonly generated in acidic solutions, but this work demonstrated that it is also produced at the alkaline pH values necessary for cyanide gold leaching. The effects of free and complexed iron and copper catalysts on the oxidation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide and cyanide were also investigated. It was shown that the cyano complexes of Fe(II) and Cu(I) are also effective as decomposition catalysts. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 0.01 M decreased the free cyanide concentration, which was attributed to the probable formation of the cyanate anion (CNO-). Although cyanide consumption increased due to its oxidation in the presence of OH?, excessive cyanide consumption in the presence of copper was attributed primarily to its complexation by the unstable copper(I) cyanide species. Rate constants for the decompositions of H2O2 and cyanide by ferrocyanide and copper cyanide were calculated; the latter was identified as being a better catalyst. TiB2 and CeO2 particle-reinforced Al6061 hybrid composites were manufactured using stir casting and hot rolling techniques. The base alloy and composites were hot-rolled at 500ºC and a 50% reduction was achieved through 12 passes. The effect of varying TiB2 and CeO2 particle additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al6061 matrix was studied. Scanning electron microscopy showed uniform dispersion of both the reinforcements, with good interfacial bonding. Microhardness and tensile properties like yield and tensile strength were found to be higher for hybrid composite with 2.5% TiB2 and 2.5% CeO2 compared to Al6061 alloy and other hybrid composites. The increased tensile strength is attributed to good dispersion and interfacial bonding between the particles and Al6061 matrix. Fracture analysis using a scanning electron microscope revealed ductile fracture for the Al6061 alloy and mixed characteristics of ductile-brittle fracture for hybrid composites

RyderTaken as a whole, the difference between the four papers in this session were perhaps more illuminating than their similarities. The titles of the first and second papers contained the word 'simulation', and in both papers random number generation was relied upon in the selection of inputs from empirical distributions, but the nature of the models to which these values were inputs were quite different. The third paper displayed another method of uniting the empirical and the theoretical in a linear programming formulation whose matrix coefficients were measured empirically, and here some apt remarks on computer implementation were included. This paved the way for the last paper which abandoned all theoretical pretensions in favour of a detailed description of computer implementation and perhaps as a result gave rise to the most feeling audience participation.The systems mentioned were developed for the iron, petrol, copper and gold producing industries in the US, Canada, Zambia and South Africa..As with all the parallel sessions, contributions from the floor may have been limited by the shorter time available to delegates to acquaint themselves with the papers before the session. In spite of this, and due largely to the active chairman¬ship of Dr Cook, the discussion during the session which is summarized here contributed much to the information contained in the papers themselves.In his presentation, Dr Calder summarized his paper. He expected that simulation would be used in future on an almost universal basis in open pit mining. It could contribute new knowledge more cheaply than experimentation in the flea For example, this study had shown what was previously thought to be a matter of more shovels and trucks was really a blasting problem, and improving blasting had increased production to the desired level. The simulation had shown that uniformity of truck performance was a desirable factor. It had also been used to study the advisability of a dispatching system.Dr Ramani contended that where equipment characteristics were available, deterministic standard simulation could adequately simulate systems in which interference occurred. Operator performance could be measured against perfor¬mance curves predicted by standard simulation and poor operators spotted and retrained. The present system did not take into account variability in truck loading, for instance. Dr Calder replied that if the number of variables was large, the standard approach became too complicated for operating personnel to follow. He admitted he had not tried it. The variability of truck loading could be coped with easily using the Monte Carlo approach. Operator variability was already incorporated because the time studies are actual."

Since 1952, Bond’s equation has been used as a standard to predict the specific energy of grinding for a given duty. The Bond’s equation considers that the exponent is constant for all conditions. Hukki, in 1961, pointed out that the exponent is a function of the particle size, and concluded that the Bond’s equation applies successfully for an intermediate range of sizes; out of this range the Bond’s equation leads to high error as demonstrated in this paper. More recently, in 2004, S. Morrell presented a new formula in which the exponents vary with the feed and product size. This paper is based on Hukki’s approach and presents a new general formula, in which the exponent varies only with the feed particle size. This new equation has been proven in 82 observable cases in Peru and other countries around the world, involving ball mills and vertimills in different configurations over a wide range of feed and product sizes, work indices and mill diameters; in most cases, the predicted value has an error less than 10% with regards to the observed value and no need for any correction factor. The growing market demand for lithium is mainly due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles and portable equipment (smartphones, tablets, power tools, notebooks, etc.). Currently there is great interest in finding new sources of lithium and technologies for its utilisation. Li-S batteries have received attention due to their theoretically high specific energy density, which is 3 to 5 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. Unlike Li-ion batteries, of which the main raw materials are lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, the main raw material for Li-S batteries is lithium chloride. The anode used in Li-S batteries is metallic lithium, produced by a molten lithium chloride electrolysis process. The extraction of lithium from pegmatites such as spodumene, previously abandoned in the 1990s for being uneconomical, has become attractive due to the increase in prices as well as the need for greater lithium purity of products made from lithium-bearing minerals. The main methods used for lithium recovery from spodumene ore include the sulfuric acid process, the alkaline process (lime or limestone as raw material) and the chlorination roasting process. Thermodynamic modelling using HSC software 5.1 was conducted to predict different reactions that could occur during chlorination roasting of the spodumene/MgCl2+CaCl2 system. Lithium extraction from the solid obtained after the chlorination roasting was also investigated. The results of thermodynamic analysis provided a better understanding of the chlorination roasting process for lithium extraction. Metallurgical tests with a mass ratio of 1:6 (spodumene:chlorides) and molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2:CaCl2) allowed over 95% recovery of the lithium contained in the spodumene concentrate. A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

The use of geometallurgical modelling is becoming more common in concentrator plant design and during the operational phase. Predictive modelling aims to define optimised process parameters for the concentrator plant to accommodate variability within the ore feed. The main objective of this study is to show how the metallurgical response of different types of ore blends can be simulated using kinetic models derived from experimental flotation tests with different geometallurgical end-member ore types and their blends. For these validation tests, four different end-member ore types containing different ratios of chalcopyrite, chalcocite and oxidised copper minerals from Rich Metal Group’s Madneuli copper-gold mine, Georgia, were tested. Kinetic flotation tests, including both rougher and cleaner flotation tests, were carried out. The simulations were performed using HSC Chemistry software based on mineral compositions of the ores and kinetic models using rectangular distribution equations and flowsheet model. Simulated and experimental results of copper grade, copper recovery and concentrate mass pull correlated well with R2 values of >0.95. Based on these results, the metallurgical response of different ore blends can be simulated based on the flotation kinetics of end-member ore types. The use of this kind of simulation will create savings during the test work phase and increase the flexibility and predictability in the processing stage. The quality control of a two-stage coal washing process involves several complex components that need to be modelled accurately, to enable autonomous control of the process. The first objective is to develop a method to track the material through the washing process, while ensuring accurate washing prediction models are used. This was achieved through a digital twin model of the Grootegeluk 1 coal processing plant. The model is the amalgamation of manipulating and combining of data-sets from the plant historian, geological wash tables, and mining dispatch servers. This information is then used to control and set the processing medium densities of all 15 modules on the plant, 10 modules in the primary wash and 5 modules in the secondary wash. This controller has been successfully implemented and controlled the plant for 10 days.

More than half of global cobalt reserves are located in the Southern African Copperbelt, stretching over the northern tip of Zambia and southern area of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In these areas, cobalt is not typically produced as a primary product but as a byproduct of copper production. Ores from this region often contain uranium, which is readily leached under typical copper leach conditions and enters the process. Uranium does not pose a challenge to copper production, but it becomes a significant problem when it follows cobalt to the cobalt precipitation process and results in unacceptably high levels of U in the final Co product. This paper evaluates the existing process technologies that can be used to remove uranium from cobalt-bearing process streams, including phosphate precipitation and ion exchange. Advantages and disadvantages of the uranium removal processes are discussed, and important design considerations are highlighted.

Although surfactants have proven to increase metal extraction by improving solution flow in porous media, these reagents have not been widely adopted in heap leaching operations because of potential incompatibilities with downstream processes that are subject to surface properties. The BASF leaching aid, LixTRA 118, was previously found to have no significant effect on post-leach operations. This study evaluated its performance in ores of different particle size distributions and the impact on acid consumption and metal recovery. Column leach studies, carried out on a copper oxide ore and mixed oxide–sulfide ore, showed that the effect of LixTRA 118 was more pronounced in ores with wider particle size distributions than in those with more uniformly sized particles. Solution percolation rates increased by up to 18% in the presence of leaching aid, and increased copper recovery and acid consumption. Improved wetting facilitated the kinetics of acid diffusion at macroand micropore level. There was no significant effect on iron recovery

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the ?fine? and ?coarse? size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: ? Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery ? Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery ? Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for ?fine? and ?coarse? particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.
