It proposes appropriate criteria and a methodology for deciding on the optimum primary access option for any particular orebody. Mr Colin M. Spence took office as President of The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers on 1st July, 1984. Colin Maynard Spence was born in November 1921, and was educated at the Durban Preparatory and High Schools, in both of which he was a Dux Scholar. He graduated from the University of Natal in 1942 with a B.Sc. degree in civil engineering. In 1958 he received a Diploma in Town Planning from the same university. The conventional visualisation method of remote equipment is through the installation of one or more cameras on the machine, and sending a live feed to the operator’s flat display. However, the performance of the teleoperation can be enhanced using better visualisation through virtual reality (VR). This paper presents the process of the design and manufacturing of a robotic platform that will be used in the next phase of the project for a VR-assisted teleoperated excavator. The robot consists of a loading boom and arm arrangement installed on the undercarriage of a CAT300-9D. All hydraulic cylinders are replaced with electric actuators, and crawling motors are substituted by electric motors. The pieces of the boom and the arm, as well as the bucket were designed in Autodesk Inventor, and manufactured from aluminium sheets using a desktop and CNC machine. Parts are joined by pins and welding as needed. An Arduino-based control system is developed for the robot, and motor controllers are used to convert the power commands from the microcontroller to the high-amperage actuators. The control system is capable of communicating with a wireless Play Station controller to operate remotely. The manufactured robotic excavator is planned to be utilised in multiple autonomy research projects.

Tunnel 99’, the Swedish National Road Administration´s (SNRA) general technical specification for road tunnels requires that the load bearing system must be designed to withstand specified design explosion loads. This paper presents the results of an SNRA study to provide a perspective of design analyses tailored to comply with the new requirement. The paper provides an example of a design analysis for assumed tunnel conditions using a numerical model. Dynamic predictions of potential damage to the rock mass and ground support system (rock bolts and shotcrete) from the specified explosion loads are presented including the nonlinear response of the shotcrete. “Tunnel 99”, qui fixe les règles de l’Administration nationale suédoise des Routes (Vägverket) concernant la conception et la construction des tunnels routiers, requiert entre autres que la structure porteuse soit capable de résister à certaines contraintes spécifiques résultant d’explosions. Cette étude présente les résultats d’une étude effectuée par Vägverket en vue d’obtenir une perspective d’analyses de conception spécialement élaborées pour se conformer aux nouvelles règles. Il contient un exemple d’analyse en fonction de conditions déterminées, basée sur un modèle numérique. Des prévisions de’études dynamiques de dommages potentiels subis par la masse rocheuse et les systèmes de soutènement (boulons d’ancrage et béton projeté) du fait des contraintes libérées par la force d’explosion spécifiée sont également présentées, y compris dans le cas d’une réaction non linéaire du revêtement en béton. “Tunnel 99” - die Vorschriften für Strassentunnel der Nationalen Schwedischen Behörde für Straßenwesen - (Vägverket) - fordern vom Tragsystem eine Auslegung in der Form, dass es spezifischen Explosionsbelastungen standhält. Dieser Artikel präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Studie der Behörde, um einen Ausblick über konstruktive Auslegungen zu geben, die geeignet sind, die neuen Vorschriften zu erfüllen. Der Artikel zeigt ein Beispiel einer konstruktive Auslegung für eine angenommene Tunnelsituation mit Hilfe eines numerischen Modells. Voraussagen unter Beachtung der vollständigen dynamischen Berechnung zu potentiellen Schädigungen des Gebirges und des Ausbaus (Anker und Spritzbetonauskleidung) durch die spezifizierten Explosionsbelastungen, einschließlich des nichtlinearen Verhaltens der Spritzbetonauskleidung, werden gezeigt.

ABSTRACT: The Urft dam, the Diemel dam and the Eder dam are three old masonry damslocated in Germany. The paper describes the rehabilitation measures and the correspondingstability analyses carried out to adjust the dams to today's standards. Remedial works such as theexcavation of inspection galleries, the installation of a grout curtain with a downstream drainagescreen as well as the installation of pre-stressed permanent tendons were carried out. In all threecases the stability of the upgraded dam could be proven on the basis of finite element analyses. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Urft-, Diemel- und Edertalsperre sind drei alte deutscheSchwergewichtsmauern aus Bruchsteinmauerwerk. Im Beitrag werden Instandsetzungsmaß-nahmen und Standsicherheitsnachweise beschrieben, die erforderlich waren, um die Staumauernan den heutigen Stand der Technik anzupassen. Hierzu wurden Kontrollgänge aufgefahren,Dichtungsschleier mit luftseitiger Dränage sowie vorgespannte Daueranker hergestellt. In allendrei Fällen konnte unter Berücksichtigung der Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen die Standsicherheit derMauer auf der Grundlage von Berechnungen nach der Methode der finiten Elemente nachgewiesenwerden. RÉSUMÉ: Les barrages de Urft, Diemel et Eder sont trois barrages-poids vieux allemandsconstruit de maçonnerie de moellon. Dans cet article, opérations de remise en état et preuves destabilité sont décrits, qui étaient nécessaires pour adapter les barrages à l'état de la techniqueactuelle. À cet effet, des galeries de contrôle étaient creusés, voiles d'étanchéité avec des drains àla face aval et tirants précontraints permanents étaient fabriqués. Dans tous les trois cas, tenantcompte des opérations de remise en état, la stabilité de la barrage pouvait être prouvée à partir decalculs selon la méthode des éléments finis.

The complexities that exist in the nature of the basic feedstock to the metallurgical process call for a high degree of ingenuity from the extractive metallurgist in seeking the best possible treatment method for a particular ore. Drawing from personal experience the author presents four case studies that demonstrate the value of creative thinking in addressing the challenges typically encountered by the extraction metallurgist. It is concluded that creative expression most often occurs in response to a perceived strong need within an organization. By deliberately laying down meaningful challenges management can stimulate innovative thinking and achieve extraordinary results.

RMR, Rock Mass Rating, is one of the famous rock classifications. However, RMR was proposed empirically and absolutely depends on the experience of engineer. Therefore, engineering verification is needed for RMR system itself. In this study, the factor analysis and the multiple regressions were performed in order to evaluate the validity of rating factor of RMR. Also numerical analysis was carried out using the FLAC based on Taguchi method, a kind of robust designs, in order to examine the support of tunnel corresponding to the revaluated RMR. As the result of the analysis new RMR was proposed with five minimized factors of intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence and roughness of discontinuities. RMR est un des procédés de la classification du roc qui sont généralement utilisés. Mais RMR s'appuie sur l'expérience et se absolument soumet à l'expérience d'ingénieur. Il est donc nécessaire de vér- ifier techniquement sur le système de RMR. Dans cet étude, on met à exécution l'analyse du facteur et la régression multiple pour évaluer la convenance de la cause de classification de RMR. De même, pour évaluer le support du tunnel selon RMR réestimé, on a exécuté l'analyse de la valeur numérique par FLAC qui se base sur la lois de Taguchi, laquelle est une sorte de système du plan robuste. Selon le résultat de la régression multiple, il est proposé de nouvel RMR à partir de l’intensité de roc intact, RQD, l'espacement, la persistance et la rugosité RMR ist eine der weit benutzten klassifikationen fuer die felsenstuecke. Da aber RMR erfahrungs- maessig ist und ueberwiegend von der persoenlichen Erfahrung eines Ingenieurs entschieden ist, ist es mit Sicherheit notwendig, das RMR-system selbst technisch zu ueberpruefen. In diesem studium waren die faktorenanalyse und mehrfachregressionanalyse durchgefuehrt, um die gerechtigkeit der klassifikationenfaktoren von RMR zu bewerten. Ferner war noch eine numerische analyse mit ben- utzung von FLAC aufgrund der Taguchi-methode, eine art technik der robust design, eingefuehrt, um die tunnelstuetze infolge der neubewertung von RMR unterzusuchen. Gemaess der mehrfach regression analyse wurde eine neue RMR, die sich aus 5-eingeschraenkten faktoren wie intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence und roughness von discontinuities zusammensetzen, in vorsch- lag gebracht

Fine powders normally exhibit, to a more or lesser extent, some ability to participate in dust explosions. Zinc dust as used in the extractive metallurgy of zinc, is not known to be a reactive powder in the industry. No evidence could be found in the literature where zinc dust was involved in an explosion or explosive type event. On 3 May 2002 an explosive type incident occurred at Zincor in Springs, South Africa, which led to a fatal accident. Given the history of relative benign behaviour of zinc powders under conditions conducive to dust explosions, it was decided to share the information of this incident with industry in an effort to prevent similar incidents. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to describe the incident that occurred at Zincor, discuss the major findings, report on corrective actions, as well as publish the results of subsequent tests that were performed to determine the conditions under which zinc powder exhibits explosive characteristics.

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

Chemical Initiatives? Umbogintwini plant is the production facility of Chemical Initiatives? business. Umbogintwini?s J Plant manufactures sulphuric acid. The plant was designed and built by Simon Carves, and was commissioned in 1974. The plant was designed to produce 500 tons/day of Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) at maximum rates. The Sulphuric acid manufacturing is through the famous contact process whereby liquid Sulphur is injected through dried air in a burner operating at 1000 °C to form sulphur dioxide (10.5% SO2). The SO2 gas is then cooled in waste heat boiler no. 1 before being fed to a four pass converter which provides 99.5% SO2 conversion to sulphur trioxide (SO3). The SO3 gas is the absorbed by 98.5% H2SO4 through the inter-pass & final tower to make more concentrated acid and dilute it with water back to 98.5% H2SO4 in acid pump tanks and dispatched to storage tanks. The manufactured Sulphuric acid is supplied to a variety of industrial manufacturing customers includes Pulp & Paper industry, Mining industry, Chemical manufacturing industry etc.

"This paper develops themes explained at two SAIMM platinum conferences. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can be increased significantly, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. Recent studies of NPV have aimed to simultaneously evaluate the impact of the optimized financial solution on the non-financial features of a project or operation.The case study presented comprised a commercially orientated review of the prefeasibility study designs and cost estimates of a platinum group metal (PGM) project in South Africa, followed by value chain optimization and sustainability studies of the project carried out simultaneously to identify potential value uplifts to be gained and guide the owners’ team going forward into the feasibility study phase. Some of the major aspects of the project that were found to have significant potential to add value included enhancement of the business model by the application of activitybased costing and theory of constraints, focus on the highest net value portions of the orebody in the early years of production, enhanced and optimized scheduling of the underground mining operation, application of dynamic grind and percentage mass recovery from ore to flotation concentrate (also known as percentage mass pull) to optimize revenue, application of elevated cut-off grades early in the life of mine, matching of the mining and processing capacity, expansion of the operation subject to capital availability, and installation of downstream processing facilities subject to regional third-party capacities.The investigation of non-financial project features focused on demonstrating that a financially optimized solution could also have a number of other benefits. These are mentioned briefly in the paper, which aims to present the status of the project at an early stage of its development."

Zincor uses O2 enrichment (up to 26% O2 in the fluidizing air) to increase the processing rate of zinc concentrates in the fluidized bed roasters. The aim of this study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining current roaster feed rates and calcine quality. It was found that, with a load of 20% micro-pellets introduced into the feed blend, that O2 enrichment could be reduced by 60%. It was determined that entrained particles spend on average between 0.46 hour and 2.44 hour in the roaster, compared to particles remaining between 3.93 hour and 4.00 hour in the bed overflow. This compares well with a radioactive tracer test performed by Spira. The required reaction time for micro-pellets was found to be less than the residence time inside a Zincor roaster. The result achieved indicated that the average particle residence time inside the roaster was increased successfully in order to compensate for the longer reaction time required to roast micro-pellets at lower levels of O2 in the fluidizing air.

Ground condition at No1. Shaft varies across the mine. The different ground conditions arise as a result of the differences in the rock strength and structure, seismicity and induced stresses in abutments areas. Apart from being a major cause of Fall of Ground incidents/accidents, adverse ground conditions where encountered has affected the rate of development advance as well as production. This implies that for support to be cost effective Geotechnical section has to ensure that support is designed to prevailing ground demand to ensure the safety of personnel and minimize loss of production. We have also seen changes in mining methods as a result of change in ground conditions. To avoid incurring unnecessary costs through remedial works resulting from ground deterioration and collapses of development openings due to inadequate support, the principle in engineering design is ?Do it right the First Time?, and this can only be achieved through good understanding of Geotechnical environment. The paper discusses the different ground conditions encountered in various development ends at No.1 Shaft. It also discusses the principles of ground support, failure mechanisms, types of ground support systems employed, and the different techniques used to select support systems, and quality control techniques in underground support installation.

Witwatersrand, Limited, where he served as temporary Geological Assistant, Sampler, Surveyor, Shift Boss, and Mine Overseer. Mr A.M.P. Henderson was born in 1950, in Kiel, West Germany. Mr J.L. Nel matriculated in 1957. This was folowed by his atainment ofthe folowing degrees: B.Sc. (Chemistry, Physics) in 1961, B.Sc. Hons. (Metalurgy) in 1965, M.Sc. One of the most important characteristics of tabular mine stress analysis is the need to represent the complex evolution of mining face positions and the accompanying induced stress changes in the rock mass. Integration of seismic activity with numerical modelling requires flexible and efficient solution schemes in which both off-reef damage and large-scale fault slip can be effectively represented. A new approach is investigated in which the stope closure and ride variables can be found using a moving least squares estimator. Some advantages of this approach over traditional element-based tessellation schemes are identified. At the same time, shortcomings of this method are noted when the displacement discontinuity variable is approximated by a polynomial shape function. Difficulties and possible solutions to the shape function formulation near excavation edges are discussed. Une des caractéristiques les plus importantes de l’analyse des contraintes minières tabulaires est la nécessité de représenter la complexe évolution des positions du front de taille et des changements concomitants des contraintes occasionnées dans la masse rocheuse. L’intégration de l’activité sismique avec la modélisation numérique requiert des projets souples et efficaces qui permettent la représentation des dommages hors-filon et des glissements de faille à grande échelle. Une approche nouvelle est étudiée qui permet de trouver la fermeture de la taille et les variables de montage en utilisant un estimateur par les moindres carrés mobile. Certains des avantages de cette approche sur les traditionnels projets basés sur une structure en mosaïque sont identifiés. En même temps, les défauts de cette méthode sont notés lorsqu’on calcule la variable de discontinuité du déplacement approximativement par une fonction de forme polynomiale. Les difficultés et solutions possibles à la formulation de la fonction forme près des bords d’excavation sont discutés. Eine der wichtigsten Charaketeristika der taublaren Grubenspannungsanalayse ist die Notwendigkeit, die komplexe Entwicklung der Abbaupositionen und der damit verbundenen induzierten Spannungsänderungen der Gesteinsmasse neu vorzulegen. Die Integration der seismischen Tätigkeit mit einem numerischen Modell erfordert flexible und effiziente Lösungsschemata, in denen sowohl Schäden ausserhalb des Riffs als auch Verwerfungen großen Ausmaßes effektiv dargestellt werden. Ein neuer Vorstoß wird untersucht in welchem die Strossenschliessung und Schneisenvariablen unter Verwendung des Schätzwertes der kleinsten quadratischen Abweichungen (Gaussscher Schätzwert) gefunden werden. Einige Vorteile dieser Annäherung im Vergleich zu der traditionellen Element-basierenden Tessellation sind identifiziert. Gleichzeitig werden Unzulänglichkeiten dieser Methode vermerkt, wenn die Verschiebungsdiskoniuitätsvariable durch eine polynomische Formfunktion angepaßt wird. Schwierigkeiten und mögliche Lösungen zur Formfunktionsformulierung nahe Exkavationsrändern werden besprochen.

Platinum mines in the Bushveld Complex are located in areas with a high geothermal gradient. This means that, compared to, for example, gold mines of the Witwatersrand region, high rock temperatures are encountered at relatively shallower depths. Thus air cooling and refrigeration need to be considered at early stages in mine development. Another factor that influences air cooling and ventilation requirements is the use of trackless diesel equipment for loading and hauling broken rock. At shallower depths it will be more cost-effective to locate the cooling and ventilation equipment on surface, whereas for deeper mines the more cost-effective option is to locate cooling equipment underground. For intermediate depths, trade-off studies need to be undertaken to determine the optimum mix between more cooling and less air or more air and less cooling, as well as the optimum location for this cooling equipment. Factors that are taken into account include power requirements, positional efficiency, and additional infrastructure requirements. Traditionally the approach has been to ventilate ?all of the mine all of the time?. However, with increasing power costs and growing pressure to ensure sustainability, this strategy must be modified to apply ventilation and cooling on demand. In other words, both cooling and ventilation equipment should be operated only when needed and should be adjusted to the demand at the time. Obviously there will be areas that will need to be ventilated (and cooled) continuously (for example, for dilution of flammable gases), but this can be built in to the overall strategy. In addition, in devising ventilation on demand (VoD) strategies, occupational criteria relating to exposure to gases, noise, and heat need to be taken into account. This paper discusses options available for implementing energy-efficient ventilation and cooling systems and suggests ways of changing traditional thinking in the overall ventilation and cooling of mines. Efficient ventilation and cooling designs can play a major role in improving sustainability and reducing energy costs and carbon footprint.

Determining the anisotropy of rocks has in the past been difficult and rarely attempted in engineering practice. Here we have developed a new practical methodology for measuring orthotropic anisotropy that requires only one hollow cylinder specimen to determine the anisotropy of a set, even when the directions of the anisotropic axes are unknown. Autrefois, la détermination de l’anisotropie des roches était difficile et elle a été rarement essayée dans la pratique de l’ingénierie. Voilà c’est nous qui avons mis au point une nouvelle méthodologie pratique pour mesurer le coefficient de conductibilité thermique de l’anisotropie qui exige un seul spécimen du cylindre creux afin de déterminer l’anisotropie d’une série, même si les directions des axes anisotropiques sont inconnues. Früher war die Bestimmung der Anisotropie von Gesteinen ein schwieriges Verfahren, das in der technologischen Praxis nur selten in Angriff genommen wurde. Wir haben hier eine neue praktische Methodik zur Messung der orthotropen Anisotropie entwickelt, bei der nur ein Hohlzylinder an Gesteinsproben benötigt wird, um die Anisotropie einer Reihe von Steinen zu bestimmen, selbst wenn die Richtungen der Anisotropieachsen unbekannt sind.
