Mining activity during 1977 was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were used domestically. Public works projects consumed the major portion of the construction material produced. The consortium of oil companies operating as Esso Ventures Inc., drilled one exploratory well off the coast of southern Belize. For drilling the well, Exxon Corp. received a 57% working interest in the consortium's concession located 40 kilometers east of Puta Gorda. No other offshore drilling was attempted in 1977. Esso also drilled a well on the Anschutz Overseas Inc. concession in the Toledo District of south- eastern Belize. The attempt wee abandoned, but seismic activities continued.

Expansion measurements of platinum, added as an internal standard, are used for thermal calibration of X-ray cameras and diffractometers. Accuracy of the temperatures derived by this technique depends on the precision of expansion measurements and the reliability of reference expansion data. Temperature measurements to ± 1° C. require ?d or ?a to be determined within ± 0.001 percent. Selected expansion data are concluded to be reliable to 2° C., 5° C., and 25° C., over the temperature ranges 0° C. to 700° C., 700° C. to 1,000° C., and 1,000° C. to 1,700° C., respectively. Tabular expansion values from 25° C. to 1,700° C. in 2° C. intervals were calculated from the following equation; Expansion, percent = [8.91 + 1.28 x 10-3(t-25) + 0.04 x 10-6(t-25) ] [t-25.104 ] These tabular values facilitate future corrections of published temperatures as more reliable expansion-temperature data become available.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral- material production or consumption.

"INTRODUCTION AND RESUMEThe Reward zinc property was one of the first selected for exploration by the Bureau of Mines at time when zinc supplies for war production were very short. Preliminary examination indicated that an appreciable tonnage of zinc that could be developed for early production might be found by diamond drilling. The geology was mapped by the Federal Geological Survey, and 14 holes were diamond drilled by the Bureau of Mines. This work was started in September 1942 and completed in September 1943.The Reward is an old property in southwestern Pinal County, 26 miles from Casa Grande on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Mining was begun in the early 1880's and was continued intermittently by several operators to about 1917. About 400,0oo pounds of copper was produced from the north¬eastern part of the property, mainly from a 600-foot incline in oxidized copper ore that replaced a bed of limestone. This ore was mined out. A 400-foot vertical shaft in the copper area was inaccessible. A 325-foot vertical shaft had been sunk near the southwest end of the zinc-bearing area, and a 600-foot crosscut tunnel had been driven near the northeast end of the zinc area, but little zinc ore was produced. There were several shallow inclines and numerous surface pits between the main workings.The ores were deposited in Paleozaic limestones that strike northeast and dip about 40 degrees northwest. These are capped by Cretaceous clastic and volcanic rocks in the zinc area. The outcrops show mineralization in a segment of the limestone 4,500 feet long, which is limited by large cross faults at each end. Another large fault, which strikes north, separates the northeast third of the mineralized belt from the remainder. Copper predominates northeast of this fault and zinc southwest of it. The ore beds are cut by numerous small cross faults. Ore was deposited for short distances along some of these, but more of it made out from the fissures along certain replaceable limestone beds."

This paper on mining practice at the Fresnillo silver mines is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of North America. Two classes of ore are produced at Fresnillo. A low-grade oxidized silver ore; end a complex-base sulphide are containing gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper. This paper is confined to a discussion of operations relating to the production of oxidized silver ores. To date, more than 10 Million tons of this ore rave been mined. The present (June, 1931) daily production is 2,000 tons of ore, and approximately 600 men are employed in the mining operations.

Demonstrate the technical feasibility of using nontraditional, low-rank, coal-based fuels and new coal-based technologies for mineral and metallurgical applications. Approach A cooperative research effort was initiated between the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Energy and the minerals industry to extend the application of the fixed-bed gasification process to low-rank Western coals. The research effort enabled cooperators to gain operating experience in the use of hot, raw producer gas for iron ore pellet induration and other high-temperature mineral processes. Researchers were able to gather data regarding the fundamental engineering aspects of the fixed-bed process and gas cleanup for a wide range of solid fuel properties. Applying Fixed-Bed Gasification As a prerequisite to gathering the data needed for the study, the Bureau of Mines designed and installed, at one of its laboratories, a 6.5-ft-diam. single stage, fixed-bed, air-blown atmospheric pressure gasifier. The gasifier was coupled with a hot, raw gas combustion system and iron ore pellet in. duration kiln. The gasifier is rated at 1.5 ton/h capacity of bituminous coal.

A primary means to reduce environmental levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposure to miners is to reduce the amount of DPM emission from the engine. A quick and economic method to estimate engine particulate emission levels has been developed. The method relies on the measurement of pressure increase across a ?lter element that is brie?y used to collect a DPM sample directly from the engine exhaust. The method has been re?ned with the inclusion of an annular aqueous denuder to the tube which permits dry ?lter samples to be obtained without addition of dilution air. Tailpipe ?lter samples may then be directly collected in hot and water-supersaturated exhaust gas ?ows from water bath-cooled coal mine engines without the need for dilution air. A new personal respirable dust monitor developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co., Inc. in a multi-year project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) generated promising results in underground coal mine testing performed by NIOSH and industry representatives during the summer of 2003. The mine data showed that the personal dust monitor (PDM) performed similarly to co-located manual reference samplers for full-shift samples at all four underground coal mines at which the evaluation took place. The technology that forms the heart of the PDM, called the tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM system), is unique in its ability to collect suspended particles on a filter while simultaneously determining the accumulated mass with National Institute of Standards and Technology traceability. Because the monitor measures the true particle mass collected on its filter, its results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as do optically based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram-level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment, and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. Using the device, miners and mine operators have the ability to view both the cumulative and projected end-of-shift mass concentration values, as well as a short-term 15- or 30-minute running average. During underground mine trials in the summer of 2003, technical personnel used the readings from the PDM to identify and correct several abnormal dust generating scenarios. These events demonstrated the potential of the PDM to be used as an engineering tool to evaluate the effectiveness of various dust control strategies. In a separate evaluation performed by CONSOL Energy, Inc., the mine operator evaluated the benefit of a proposed new water spray-based dust control system. Engineers measured the dust concentration upstream and downstream of a production location under different dust control scenarios using two PDM units. By evaluating the change in the dust loading between the upstream and downstream monitoring sites, the company was able to determine in a few hours which hardware configuration would yield the greatest benefit to the workplace environment. BACKGROUND Measuring underground coal mine dust concentrations is an essential part of protecting miners' health. The U.S. Secretary of Labor and the Federal Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Pneumoconiosis among Coal Mine Workers has recommended that better monitoring of coal miner dust exposures be used as a method to improve miner health. In consultation with labor, industry, and government, NIOSH issued a contract to Rupprecht & Patashnick Co., Inc. (R&P), Albany, N.Y., to develop a one-piece PDM. The object was to miniaturize TEOM technology into a form suitable for a person-wearable monitor that would enable accurate end-of-shift dust exposure information to be available to miners. Furthermore, any person-wearable dust monitor should minimize the burden to the wearer by incorporating the monitor into the mine worker's cap lamp battery, with exposure data continually displayed during the shift to enable workers and management to react to changes in dust exposure. In the summer of 2003, NIOSH conducted extensive testing of the PDM to determine its laboratory and in mine performance. In addition, anecdotal information collected in the mines showed several occasions where miners were able to identify situations that produced high levels of respirable coal mine dust The PDM's response to unplanned changes resulted in action being taken to keep dust exposures as low as possible. In another case that demonstrated the PDM's versatility, a mine was seeking to find a better dust control solution on its longwall headgate stageloader. In this instance, the PDM was used as a diagnostic tool by the miners to quickly evaluate the control technology. [ ] HOW DOES THE PDM WORK? The PDM is configured to provide accurate respirable dust personal exposure information in a form that is as convenient to wear as a normal cap lamp (See Figure 1). Respirable dust exposure data displayed by the device has two main objectives: providing the miner and mine operator with timely values to avoid overexposure to dust, allowing them to make any necessary changes during the course of a work shift; and computing an accurate end-of-shift statistic for a miner's average respirable dust exposure. The mass sensor embedded in the PDM, holds the key to the accurate, time-resolved dust concentration measurements. The inertial, gravimetric-equivalent, mass measurement technique used in the device typically provides a limit of detection on par with that of the most sensitive laboratory-based microbalances.

Several underground coal mines currently operating in the Beckley District of West Virginia are experiencing serious roof and floor problems. A significant portion of the estimated two billion tons of coal resources may be lost as a result of these ground control problems. Preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines indicated that these problems are due in part to a high horizontal stress field. During this contract study, a field program was conducted to quantify the horizontal in situ stress. A total of 14 overcoring sites (using the Bureau of Mines strain-relief overcoring technique) in five mines were drilled producing 53 data sets. Analysis of the data was done to provide in situ horizontal stresses for each of the five mine, and for the district as a whole. Stress data indicate horizontal stresses far in excess of that predicted by theory and in some cases, up to six times the estimated vertical stress. In addition to the field testing, a detailed computer modeling study was conducted using finite element and boundary integral (displacement discontinuity) methods. Verification of in situ stresses was obtained by the models and analysis of various development geometries, mining methods and remedial techniques were conducted. Recommendations for reducing ground control problems and future studies are presented.

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1942, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The list of that date was complete as to equipment then available and in current use. Information Circular 7240,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved curing the calendar year 1943. The present list is another supplement covering approvals issued during the calendar year 1943. The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gave 19 drills and drilling machines on the Bureau's active list. No additional approvals were given in 1942, but the three issued in 1943 bring the total to 22. Item 102, under Loading Machines and Conveyors, also appeared in Information Circular 7207, and items 120 and 124 appeared in Information Circular 7240. These numbers are repeated here to show that approvals were granted during 1943 for additional voltages on machines previously listed for one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. Additional testing of two prototype instruments for the discrete detec­tion of submicrometer particles in metal and nonmetal underground mines is described. The detectors are designed to utilize properties of submicrometer particles to distinguish between those produced by fires from mine ambient particles primarily resulting from diesel engine exhaust. One instrument is based on the ability to pyrolyze fire produced parti­cles, but not diesel exhaust particles. An alarm is produced when the ratio of pyrolyzed to unpyrolyzed particles exceeds a preset value. The other detector utilizes a continuous flow ion chamber preceded by a denuder to remove charged particles. Discrimination against diesel produced submicrometer particles results because the diesel particles are naturally more highly charged than fire produced particles. In-mine testing was conducted over a period of several months. Both in­struments exhibited an ability to discriminate against diesel exhaust. However, problems with the recording equipment, and with the instruments themselves, due to large ambient dust particles, prevented enough data from being obtained to choose between the two methods. Recommendations to correct the problems are made.

This final report documents the work dune by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC), on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971). Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of independent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume. Phase I of the contract was devoted to performing an in-depth assessment of electromagnetic noise measurements taken by several contractors and other investigators, and then defining a new noise measurement program and instrumentation system tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. These data are required for use in the design of new emergency and operational communication systems. This work, and the follow-on coordination and guidance activities of ADL on this noise measurement program in subsequent phases of the contract, are treated in Part One of Volume I.

This is one of a series of papers being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the dissemination of information on methods and practices used in the mining and preparation of crushed stone for market requirements. Performance in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour are given whenever that information is available. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods, and are, therefore, included if possible. In addition to the factual description of equipment and methods used, it is desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made. This paper is particularly concerned with the opertions at the Columbia plant of Palmetto Quarries Co. of Columbia, S.C. The plant is about one-half mile east of the Congaree River and adjacent to the southwest corner of the city of Columbia. Rail access is by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and by a spur strack of the Seaboard Airline Railroad.

The contract objective is the development of an Automatic Fire Control System for Mobile Underground Metal Mining Equipment. The Phase I Report, which described the projected data handling plan, was published on July 24, 1975. The Phase II effort covered the period from July 24 through December 2 and accomplished the following objectives: ? Acquisition of data in accordance with the project data handling plan. Data were acquired through visits to twenty mine sites in ten states and Canada; visits to Bureau of Mines and MESA facilities; visits to mobile equipment manufacturers; and an extensive literature search. ? Analysis of accumulated data which provided the following specific types of design inputs: selection of the type of mobile underground equipment found to represent the greatest overall fire hazard; typical operating conditions for the vehicle; characteristics of the reported fire experiences; and performance, cost and maintenance factors affecting potential purchases of automatic fire control systems for underground mining equipment. ? Development of the AFCS design concept. Utilizing the data analysis results and considering the state-of-the-art of fire control system components, a recommended design concept was developed with particular emphasis placed on the need for a low cost and reliable system. Design trade-off studies are provided for the recommended system and for four alternate system concepts.

In 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined 18,700 acres of the 24,922-acre Eighteen Mile Wilderness Study Area to evaluate mineral resources. This study area is in east-central Idaho in Lemhi County, approximately 20 miles southeast of Leadore. The study area is underlain by Paleozoic marine sedimentary rock and Ordovician granitic rock. The sedimentary rock is primarily limestone and dolomite with a minor amount of siltstone. The Nicholia mining district borders the southern boundary of the study area. However, none of the district's mineral-bearing structures appear to trend into the study area. Just outside the northwestern part of the study area, on Clear Creek, is the E. J. Wilson and Sons? open-pit gypsum mine that operated until about 1977. About 120,000 tons of gypsum were produced from the mine for the cement plant at Inkom, ID, and for use as soil conditioner. Two theories for the origin of gypsum deposits are a hydrothermal source and a stratabound occurrence. Hydrothermal deposition is favored for this deposit. Occurrences of gypsum may exist in the study area. However, known reserves are adequate to meet needs for at least 800 years. There are no known mines, claims, or leases in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of part of the Eighteen Mile WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ at the request of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The USBM examines and evaluates individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. The immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions. The long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

This report describes the results of investigations into four specific areas related to trolley wire power distribution systems in coal mines. These are: 1. Partially insulated (shielded) trolley wire 2. High-speed insulator fault detectors 3. Dual-wire trolley systems 4. Insulator failure indicators. Prototype devices or designs were developed in each area. In addition, a brief survey was made in an attempt to assess the Future of mine trolley systems, and data was collected and reviewed in an attempt to analyze the nature of trolley wire related accidents. Other options for decreasing the risks associated with trolley systems that arose .during the study are briefly described in appendices. These include insulating equipment and miners from return and/or energized conductors and use of a segmented trolley wire with local control of current delivering capability.

"INTRODUCTION The Park City district, situated 30 miles east of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Wasatch Mountains, Is a well-known producer of lead, zinc, and precious metals. Nearly continuous production has been maintained from the dis¬trict since its early discovery about 1870. For approximately 50 years, gravity milling methods were employed to beneficiate Park City ore, and during that time tailings from the mills were sluiced down Silver Creek and deposited on lands below the camp for 7 miles.Owing to the large tonnage of tailings deposited along Silver Creek, considerable work was done in the past in the attempt to develop a low-cost concentration method for re-treating this material, but no-method was found that was economically feasible. The Bureau of Mines was asked to conduct beneficiation tests on Park City tailings in November 1944, and metallurgical studies were initiated at that time. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on samples from the Grasselli deposit."

This report describes a study of the factors which affect medium voltage (661 - 1000 volts) and high voltage (1001 - 7500 volts) trailing cable couplers for use in underground coal mines to connect trailing rabies. Improvements in quality, dependability, and safety of medium and high voltage couplers are presented in the form of requirements for couplers. The results of an investigation of high voltage trailing cable coupler design and of whether trailing cable couplers must have a metallic shell as required by CFR 30 part 75.805 are presented. Conclusions and recommended research programs are included that describe the present situation and future development approaches.

The development of fire hazard criteria for noise control products in underground coal mines are presented. Qualifying requisites of the criteria include maintaining miners' safety, allowing for maximum use of noise control products, and economic feasibility. The burning process is analyzed for its relationship to fire hazard criteria developed by NASA and the FAA, and the mine environment is analyzed in conjunction with the end-use applications of noise control products. Also, the interim fire hazard specification developed by MSHA is appraised as it applies to end-use applications of noise control products. From these analyses and a literature survey, fire hazard criteria are developed. They include an initial screening procedure that evaluates the level of flammability testing required. Fire tests that may be indicated are the Vertical Flame Test, the Ignition Temperature Test, and the 25-Foot Tunnel Test.
