The Bureau of Mines is investigating vanadium recovery from various domestic resources. A low-grade carnotite ore sample containing 0.34 pct V20S and 0.04 pct U30S was leached, and the results were compared with those of similar leach tests using a mill-grade sample containing 1.26 pct V205 and 0.19 pct U308. Experiments on the two ore samples included agitation leaching, pugging, salt-roast leaching, and autoclave leaching. None of the leaching methods investigated showed any significant advantage over another except autoclaving, which reduced the leach time but at the expense of greater acid consumption. Typical of the experimental results attained are the data gathered from the agitation leaching tests. Agitation leaching of the mill-grade ore with 100 lb/ton H2S04 resulted in extractions of 94 pct U308 and 33 pct V205. To increase the vanadium extraction from 33 to 91 pct required concentrations of 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103. Complementary agitation leach tests on the low-grade ore required 200 lb/ton H2S04 to extract 94 pct U308, and 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103 to extract 90 pct V205.

The term "titaniferous magnetite" is used to designate those magnetic ores of iron that carry more than 2 or 3 per cent of titanium. Large and easily workable deposits of these ores occur in different parts of the world, and have attracted attention for many years. Under present furnace practice, however, the smelting of these ores is both difficult and expensive, and for that reason they are not accepted by furnaces, so that the deposits are practically worthless. The problem of finding a feasible method of utilizing these ores has naturally been attractive, and numerous attempts have been made to solve it. Experiments to that end embrace two lines of investigation. The one that has been the more frequently tried is the elimination of the titanium from the ores, so as to make possible their smelting in the usual way. The other is the devising of a method of smelting by which titaniferous ores may be reduced as economically as are non-titaniferous ores. The former method involves a physical process, the latter a chemical process.

This study is the extension of an investigation of reclamation of floodplain areas in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District, Idaho, that are unuseable in their natural condition, by construction of landfills with mill tailings. The study develops a valley-wide tailings disposal plan to utilize 20 potential landfill sites on floodplain areas and presents measures for reclaiming the sites for subsequent productive use. Field and laboratory testing on a test section and two abandoned impoundments support the use of hydraulically deposited tailings for landfill construction. Hydrological testing has shown that controlled discharge from tailings impoundments results in contaminant levels in the discharge below regulated standards. Additional testing indicated that compacted soil liners and pond management provide adequate contaminant abatement where acid-generating tailings are encountered. Mechanical compaction, including surcharge loading, upgrades foundation support capacity so that construction on the surface of tailings deposits is feasible. On completion of the testing program, the test sections were abandoned and rehabilitated. Details concerning potential landfill sites have been refined. At recent production rates, the 20 sites would result in 680 acres of reclaimed land, while providing a minimum of 40 years of tailings storage capacity. A general design has been developed for the retention dikes. Aspects of embankment stability, including liquefaction are discussed, and are shown to provide an adequate factor of safety under the anticipated range of operating conditions.

Emanation coefficients of 950 samples of domestic uranium ore were successfully and rapidly determined with fair precision by modifications of the closed-can, gamma-only assay method, using commercially available or similar equipment. Coefficients range from <1 to 91 percent. Emanation varies considerably within each mine and area, but distinct differences among major mining areas were found, ranging from 7.5 percent for Moss Back Member, Chinle Formation, Southwest Lisbon Valley, Utah, to 56.6 percent for Ft. Union Formation (?), Powder River Basin, Wyoming. Coefficients also vary with (1) uranium mineralogy; (2) radium mineralogy; (3) lithology of host rocks; (4) grain size of uranium and radium minerals; (5) comminution of ore; (6) estimated porosity and permeability; (7) moisture content; (8) ore grade; (9) supposed mobility of deposits; age of deposits is unknown but limited by (10) age of host rocks which shows only doubtful correlation with emanation. Data obtained may be used to evaluate effects of investigated parameters on radon concentration in mines and thus to select efficient control measures. Drill-core emanation data allow estimates of probable radon problems in undeveloped deposits.

Manganese-bearing deposits f the Leadville, Colo., district are of two distinct types. Manganosiderite, a combined or intimately mixed ferrous and manganous carbonate, occurs in unaltered zones as the predominant mineral. From 50 feet below the surface to as deep as 900 feet, psilomelane and wad, both black manganese oxide minerals, are found in intimate contact with hematite and limonite. A typical analysis of the black oxide ore shows 20.08 percent Fe, 18.64 percent Mn, 15.91 percent insoluble, 14.91 percent moisture, 0.94 percent Zn, and 2.13 percent Pb. A considerable tonnage of the oxide ore has been mined for production of spiegeleisen and for other purposes.

At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied prospects, claims, and mineralized sites in a 43,053-acre portion of the 51,262-acre Desatoya Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-030-l10) in 1985. The study area, located 50 miles east of Fallon, NV, is underlain by alluvial deposits of Quaternary age and volcanic and volcanic-derived sedimentary rock of Tertiary age. No mines or recent exploration activity were identified within the area studied. The Gold Basin area, located 1/2 mile to the south has produced 982 ounces of gold and 10,086 ounces of silver. The Cold Springs area, located 1/2 mile to the west, has recently been explored for gold-silver. Mineralization at these two areas apparently did not extend into the study area, but future mining at these areas would likely impact it.

A cobalt/manganese occurrence in Clark County, Nevada was the subject of a site-specific mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1988-90. The study site is in the northern part of the Million Hills (wilderness) study area which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Field work during a period of one week consisted of geological mapping and sampling of workings and outcrops, and geochemical and geophysical surveys conducted on four transects totalling 7,600 ft. Although the concentrations of cobalt (0.1 to 0.5 percent) detected in samples from the fissure zones are within the range of grades associated with world-class economic deposits, the volume of material enriched in cobalt at the study site is insufficient to warrant consideration as a potential resource. Concentrations of manganese, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, barium, and thallium, although anomalous, are too low for economic consideration. At the study site, workings consist of three trenches and nine pits. The exploration history is unknown, and no production is reported.

For shortwall mining to be profitable, the additional capital investment of about $1 million for shortwall roof supports must be offset by decreased total operating costs and/or increased coal production. The Bureau of Mines therefore conducted a demonstration project to compare shortwall and room-and-pillar mining. Daily two-shift production from the bureau of Mines-Beth-Elkhorn Corp. shortwall demonstration n project averaged 975 tons of raw coal, compared with 905 tons from a room-and-pillar unit operating undo r similar conditions. The estimated direct operating costs for the shortwall and room-and-pillar unite were $4.21 and $4.03 pier ton, respectively. The profitability of the shortwall system was found to depend not only on the increased depreciation cost of the powered roof supports and the decreased cost of supplies and materials but also on such factors as the fixed and variable indirect costs and the selling price of the coal. Shortwall mining was demonstrated to be a viable alternative to room-and-pillar mining.

This report describes the construction and testing of large (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) stopping and overcast structures in an oil shale mine. The work was undertaken to develop construction techniques and cost data, and to measure leakage rates on full scale structures in an oil shale mine. A design data base was developed by reviewing industry practice, oil shale industry plans, and technical literature. Alternate layouts for room and pillar mining were examined to find ways to reduce the size and number of ventilation control structures. Six full size stoppings and one overcast were built in the Colony Pilot Mine. Leakage rates were measured using both SF6 tracer gas techniques and the ?brattice window? method. The leakage was measured both before and after a full scale face blast. Blast air pressures were measured across two of the stoppings. Cost and leakage data were used to evaluate the projected overall performance of various combinations of the stoppings in a two-panel oil shale mine.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the absorption of radium and thorium from waste uranium leach liquor by clays and other materials. This work was conducted in support of the Bureau&apos;s goal of minimizing the environ¬mental conflicts, impacts, and occupational hazards Associated with mining and mineral processing operations. Tailings and soil samples from Wyoming and Utah were contacted with tailings liquors to determine the degree of absorp¬tion. Absorption ranged from 0 to 99 percent for radium and from 0 to 31 per¬cent for thorium. Some samples, which readily absorbed radium, were contacted with various salt solutions that could be present in tailings solutions to determine their effectiveness as desorbents. The desorption of radium ranged from 0.06 to 100 percent. An alpha-spectrometric method was used to determine the radium and thorium, concentrations in the solutions and the solids.

This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines concerns different methods of face haulage used with various types of continuous-mining machines, mobile-loading machines, and track-mounted equipment under varying roof and bottom conditions and in coalbeds of varying thicknesses. This report is the ninth in a series on mechanical mining in bituminous coal mines. Reference to the reports previously published is made in appendix III, p. 106. Use of modern mining equipment in bituminous coal mines has resulted in increased productivity at the face. This especially is true where continuous-mining machines are used, and the supervision is good. Previous methods and equipment for moving coal from the face became inadequate and had to be improved to restore balance to the mining systems. Sometimes new equipment was needed to improve the face haulage, and in some instances, a new combination of existing equipment was used. Detailed studies of face haulage methods were made at 13 mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois to compare their effectiveness and to describe fully the conditions under which each method was used.

"INTRODUCTION AND RESUME Arizona asbestos mines are the only sources on the American continents of iron-free chrysotile spinning fiber that meets the Navy specifications for asbestos fiber for use in covering electrical cables. Rhodesia normally supplies the bulk of this grade of asbestos at about half the Price of Ari zona spinning fiber. The acute submarine menace in 1942 focused attention on the danger that imports might be cut off and that a sudden demand for greatly expanded production might fall on the Arizona mines to supply the tonnage of this essential material needed for war production.A joint preliminary investigation of Arizona asbestos deposits was made in August 1941 by J. R. Thoenen, senior mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines and A. E. Granger, a geologist of the United States Geological Survey. A more extended investigation of the numerous asbestos mines and prospects, which are scattered over 25 townships of difficult terrain in Gila County, was begun by the senior author in August 1942.The Geological Survey assigned two geologists (Newton Chute and A. F. Shride) a few weeks later to study the geology as an aid in selecting the mines for the Bureau's exploration projects. Six mines were selected for exploratory work because it was desired to prove reserves of ore where production could be started quickly if urgent demand should arise. Acceleration of production is normally slow because of adverse operating conditions. First, the mines are at distances of 35 to 100 miles from Globe, the shipping and supply point, and the roads are few and poor. The mine openings start in steep canyon walls, so that mining supplies usually have to be packed in and the product packed out over 0.5 to 5 miles of burro trail. Second, most of the ore deposits are small, and the ratio of rock broken to spinning fiber recovered is very high, usually exceeding 200."

During the current business depression the Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries concerning placer mining, the prospects for men of small means to make wages by small-scale placer operations, the locations of placer deposits in the United States, methods of working placers on a small scale, and allied subjects. It has therefore seemed desirable to prepare a circular covering, in nontechnical language, the principal questions which have boon referred to the Bureau of Mines for answer. There are a number of bureau publications dealing with placer mining, most of which are now out of print, but which may be consulted in the larger libraries. Other articles on placer mining nave appeared from time to time in the technical press and several good textbooks have been written on the subject. A partial bibliography of this literature appears at the end of this paper. A recent pamphlet published by the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology to assist the prospector and inexperienced small operator has received wide and favorable attention and is recommended as a useful reference. In the present paper no attempt will be made to cover the subject of placer mining in a comprehensive manner, but discussion will be confined to elementary questions of particular interest to persons of limited experience.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to measure the amplitude and shape of the strain pulse and the size of the crushed zone produced in a granite by different explosives and to determine how these quantities are related to the detonation properties of the explosives. The reflection theory of rock breakage has shown that the amplitude and shape of the strain pulse incident at a free surface determine the fragmentation and volume of rock broken. Determination of the properties of an explosive that control the characteristics of the strain pulse produced in the rock will help in evaluating explosives for use in blasting. The investigation showed the different explosives produced a twofold variation in the amplitude of the strain pulse but little variation in the shape of the pulse. The explosives also produced a twofold variation in the volume of the crushed zone, but differences among the explosives were more accurately determined by strain-amplitude measurements than by crushed-zone measurements. The peak amplitude of the strain pulse and the volume of the crushed zone correlated with the calculated detonation pressure of the explosive.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health partnered with the water well industry to develop engi­neering control technologies and training products to address noise exposure at the job site. Noise­induced hearing loss continues to be a problem in the well drilling industry. Research con­ducted by NIOSH found that air rotary drill rigs produce sound levels more than 90 dB(A) over the course of an eight­hour workday. Sounds levels above 90 dB(A), identified during hammer drilling and the hammering of casing, exposes workers to levels that can damage hearing. A typical air rotary drill rig provides no barrier, for noise and dust pro­tection, between the drill’s control panel and the drill stem. The development of a partial cab is the clearest example of NIOSH’s research partnership with the water well industry. NIOSH researchers determined that an engineering noise control to protect the oper­ator at the rig’s control panel would be effective, based on typical work site conditions. Many surface rigs do not have full cabs as a result of the original equipment manufacturer design or the high cost of aftermarket products. Developed as a partial cab, the NIOSH engineer­ing noise control design addressed stakeholders’ needs associated with cost, transport, and worker usage (Figure 1). Field tests found the partial cab effective in reducing sound levels at the rig’s control panel, a typical location for a drill rig operator. Sound levels at the control panel were reduced from 104 to 96 dB(A) (Figure 2). Coupled with continued use of personal protective equipment, such as hear­ing protection devices, the partial cab can help to reduce noise exposure. NIOSH researchers created a CD with informa­tion about noise exposure and the partial cab. Most important to well drilling companies is information on how to construct and attach the partial cab to drill rigs. The CD can be viewed on a standard computer and includes a video of the partial cab in use on a work site. Computer­aided design drawings are included on the CD and provide detail of the cab design as well as information on construction mate­rials and design details. Additionally, the CD provides background infor­mation on noise­induced hearing loss and hearing protection devices to increase knowledge about this occupational health concern. This information can be viewed by all company employees to help promote the partial cab’s importance to workers using the cab. More information on the partial cab noise control technology can be downloaded from www.cdc.gov/ niosh/mining NIOSH researchers also examined the health and safety training needs of workers in the ground water industry. It was quickly realized that most workers learn health and safety on the job and do not attend any sort of formal training. In addition, there is not a lot of time for daily “tailgate talks” or “shop talks” on health and safety issues. As a small business industry, the owner is often operating a drill rig along with his other employees. In general, new employees learn the job in an apprentice style sys­tem. As a result, workers and owners have few opportunities to access uniform health and safety information based upon the job — an outdoor work environment with daily change in work sites. With this information, NIOSH researchers devel­oped two products that deliver health and safety information to fit into the daily work of well drillers. The objective of this study is twofold, The first is to present the composition of the offshore petroleum industry in terms of lease bonuses and the value of hydrocarbons produced from Federal offshore tracts. The second is to present costs of producing petroleum (oil and condensate) in the Gulf of Mexico with a financial analysis of an offshore operation. To prepare a financial analysis of an offshore operation, a model was derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced. To establish cost and income guidelines for the model, a group of seven oilfields in the Gulf of Mexico ranging from 7 to 75 miles from shore and in water 20 to 130 feet deep was selected for study. A net profit or loss statement was prepared for each field and a discounted cash flow rate of return was calculated. Discounted cash flow rates of return for the seven fields range from 1.1 to 19.5 percent. Under the two specified conditions set up for the model (a 20-year and a 30-year oil depletion model), the rates of return are 17.2 and 13.7 percent, respectively. To January 1, 1959, the top four operators in the Federal offshore areas had paid approximately 40 percent of the amount spent on all lease bonuses and produced about 56 percent of the total hydrocarbons.

A knowledge of the mechanics of wave propagation through the earth is essential if reliable communication systems are to be designed for coal mine environments. To obtain a reliable basis from which accurate propagation predictions could be drawn, a series of theoretical Studies have been prepared for the Bureau of Mines by Mr. Ramsay Decker of Spectra Associates, Inc. through a subcontract with Collins Radio Group. These reports formulate the analytical techniques from which wee may derive frequencies and antenna configurations that yield the optimum signal-to-noise ratios over the greatest distances in mine environments. The reports of sections 2 and 4 deal with analytical techniques for determining the signal-to-noise ratio within a mine environment for loop-to-loop and line source-to-loop antenna configurations. The analytical results of these reports were then implemented into computer programs to obtain predictions concerning through-the-earth signal propagation. These preliminary predictions are based on noise data compiled by Bensema, Maxwell and Stone, and WVU prior to the extensive research conducted by the National bureau of Standards (NBS). These initial measurements indicated a 20- to 30-dB lower noise level than that measured recently by N BS. The recent NBS data is that used by Collins in the final predictions.

A 10-channel automatic data acquisition system has been designed and environmentally packaged for use with underground strain-gage applications and associated instruments. The system uses commercially available components and is assembled in two plastic enclosures. Environmental control is provided through a specially designed (compressed-air) air-conditioning system and water-resistant cabling. Accuracies of 0.01 pct and resolution of 1 µV have been obtained in underground tests.

This report discusses the development of a mathematical model that describes the flow of methane only and methane and water in a coal bed during mining operations. Because of the complex geometry, boundary conditions and fluid properties, the model is based on a numerical solution to the equations describing flow. The goals for the development of this model and requirements to which it complies are for the most part expressly stated in Request for Proposal No. 50110752. In addition to the capabilities specified under the scope of work the model can handle an anisotropic porous medium and a source term has been added which will simulate, somewhat, the effects of desorption. This term will be pressure dependent. The effect of time on such a term is only taken care of in the change of pressure with time. This source term will have the dimensions of Mcf/day/Mcf pore volume. It will be a part of the input data to be supplied by the user and will be entered as a table of rates versus pressure. These models consider the fracture system as the main porosity. All computed results pertain to the fractures. The source term mentioned above represents the flow from the matrix porosity into the fracture. Such flow should be small compared with the flow between fractures since these models handle only one porosity structure system.
