A floating gold dredge operating in coarse alluvial gravels of the Grey River on the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, generated high concentrations of clay and colloidal particles in the dredge pond, which entered the groundwater system. Sampling was carried out at depths down to 20 m and it was found that variation of the length of the flow path occurred because of the movement of the dredge towards the piezometers. The alluvial gravels, the suspended sediments, the groundwater system and the water chemistry were all studied. Sediment concentrations were found to be highly variable with depth, but the relative concentrations in the depth profile were generally consistent as the flow distance shortened. The sediments were extremely fine and travelled further through the gravels than predicted. Comparison of field results with the available theory of deep filtration in clean beds of porous media gives some basis for estimating the behaviour of fine sediments in other alluvial systems

Bitumen occurs in the basins in reservoir sandstones, in veinlets close to hydrocarbon source rocks, in veins through lava beds and in sulphide-mineralised veins where it is closely associated with, but predates, the sulphides. The role of organic matter was probably in enhancing metal reduction by creating a low-Eh environment rather than in metal transport. A theoretical model is described for prediction of the capacity of fines from porous ores, such as cokes and sintered ores, to be removed by a pneumatic, horizontal-type classifier prior to charging into a blast furnace. First, the influence of variation in the apparent density and drag coefficient of porous ores on removal efficiency is analysed from a stochastic standpoint. The effect on efficiency of collisions between particles in the classifying region is then examined analytically in relation to the ratio of the mass flow rates of particles and air (the loading ratio). Finally, a theoretical model is constructed that takes these factors into account. Theoretical and experimental results are compared and classifying efficiency is discussed from both experimental and theoretical viewpoints.

Paper presented at the MEP '89 conference held in Madrid, 13-15 November 1989. Britain has sustained an important metalliferous mining industry over many centuries. Recently, new geological concepts and exploration techniques have indicated that there is considerable potential for the discovery of a variety of deposit styles, often in previously neglected areas. The recent discoveries at Aberfeldy (Ba-Zn-Pb), Gairloch (Cu-Zn) and Cononish (Au-Ag)in Scotland and Curraghinalt (Au-Ag) and Lack (Au-Ag-Pb) in Northern Ireland are illustrations of this potential. Some of the prospective areas for future exploration are described and an indication is given of the legislative framework within which mineral exploration and development are carried out

A study has been undertaken to establish the relationships between the O&K wedge test cutting resistances and the geotechnical parameters of rock materials in the context of bucket-wheel excavator operation. High horizontal stresses and high horizontal to vertical in-situ principal stress ratios in the plane of underground drifts and entries can damage weakly laminated roof rocks quite severely. Such stresses are difficult to measure accurately, as illustrated by case histories of in-situ stress measurement at Wistow and Lea Hall mines, in the UK. Their direction and relative magnitude can, however, be estimated from the absolute velocity vectors of continental plates. With the preliminary results from the World Stress Map project now available it is possible to indicate mining areas where regional horizontal stresses are low, such as Europe, and high, such as Australia and Asia

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Standardised stream-sediment sampling procedures have been used in mountainous and hilly terrains. Special sampling procedures were developed for application in remote environments, such as high mountains, desert, semi-desert, karst and loess-covered regions. The diversified analytical methods used in more than 20 analytical laboratories participating in the project have been unified into two multi-element, multi-method analytical systems. A unified data monitoring procedure was developed based on primary and secondary standard samples. To date the project has covered about 4 000 000 km2 and the aim is to complete the coverage within the present decade

During mining, crushing and handling the size of iron ore lumps decreases. Key factors in determining the amount and size of fines that are produced are the mechanical properties of the ore. In a continuation of earlier work on the same ores the mechanical properties of three Australian iron ores from Yandi, Koolan and Mt. Whaleback were determined. In particular, fracture toughness was investigated in greater detail by examining its relationship to crack length using the compact tension test. The elastic modulus and strength of the ores were also determined in flexure and compression. The results were interpreted using Weibull statistics, enabling the ores to be ranked according to strength and elastic modulus. These results, together with data on the mechanical response of the ores to stress and observations concerning the effect of mineralogy on cracking, provide a coherent understanding of the mechanisms involved when the ores fracture

A Cu-conducting solid electrolyte was used to develop the sensor. Instead of measuring the potential across the electrolyte from the reference material to the Cu-containing phase, a potential was applied and the stable current measured. This gave reasonable readings for copper-tin alloys, which agreed with the theoretical calculations, but was less satisfactory in the case of mattes because the surface area of electrolyte presented to the matte phase varied from sensor to sensor. To overcome this problem the potential was applied, the current was measured and then reversed and remeasured and the ratio of the currents was calculated. The current ratio is shown to be independent of the resistance of the electrolyte and the surface area of the electrolyte offered to the melt, but strongly dependent on the activity of the copper

Ordinary kriging on the assumption of a gaussian error distribution and indicator kriging were used to derive the probability that a given calorific value would or would not be exceeded by coal from an area of a deposit. The two techniques led to similar probability maps despite local differences; the lack of an absolute reference makes it impossible to judge which method is better for this particular application

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Platinum-group minerals (PGM) in the enriched zone at Dust Mountain occur in two separate parageneses, the first representing primary magmatic PGM and the second primary magmatic PGM that have been reduced to alloys during serpentinisation. Minerals in the first group were unaffected by hydrothermal alteration on account of their textural setting or stable chemical composition. Despite substantial alteration of the serpentinised assemblage, most evidence points to the dominant role of primary magmatic processes in determining PGM occurrence. Several base metals have nevertheless been introduced hydrothermally. With respect to surficial dispersion the single most important paragenetic factor was the reduction of sulphides to alloys, rendering them more susceptible to mechanical erosion and less so to chemical leaching. The different textural setting of Pd-group and Ir-group phases results in different dispersion characteristics, with major implications for stream sediment sampling

The financing of large mining projects in developing countries is often achieved, at least in part, by limited-recourse financing methods. Financing agreements are affected by the basic accord that is struck between the host government and the sponsors of the project. It is concluded that governments and project sponsors should take into account the requirements of lenders when structuring such mineral development agreements to maximise the potential for attracting project financing. Lenders are likely to be most interested in aspects such as fiscal arrangements, calculation of taxable income and general accounting rules, royalties, transferability of payments/dividends overseas, corporate structure and control, staged development, financing, loan support and state guarantees/approvals, political risk, provisions for default, product marketing, settlement of disputes and environmental issues

A risk model for assessment of the uncertainty in the forecasts of the planned profit is developed. It is based on the selling price of the metal recovered from the ore and the production per shift of the excavators. These two critical variables characterise the economic and technical aspects of the mining venture. Time-series methodology is used to describe the behaviour of the economic variable, which improves the adequacy of the modelling. A hypothetical open-pit gold mine is used to illustrate the application of the model. Results obtained show that the model is a good alternative to sensitivity analysis in taking account of the stochastic character of the price of the metal recovered from the excavated ore and the production per shift of the excavators used. The model can be extended by the inclusion of new variables that have a probabilistic nature

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Oxygen isotope analysis indicates that quartz, carbonates and muscovite could all have formed in near-isotopic equilibrium with the mildly saline H2O-CO2 ore fluid at 330 degrees C. Calculated values for O, C and S in the ore fluids imply derivation from a deep, homogeneous source region and are consistent with formation either as a direct or an indirect result of igneous processes. Values for delta-O18 plot a little outside the accepted magmatic range, but have almost certainly been modified by exchange reactions with wall rocks. These reactions were also the most likely cause of deposition of the ore constituents. The chemical and isotopic character of the fluid was similar to that in many Archaean and later mesothermal auriferous vein systems, especially the Mother Lode region of California. Whether the microscopic bubbles generated by the high energy dissipation and high feed-slurry velocities in new flotation cells are stable in solution and what roles they play in particle collection are of great interest for the flotation of fines. Experimental work has shown that, with fast flow of liquid through an orifice, stable microscopic bubbles can form in flotation systems by hydrodynamic cavitation in the absence of gas supersaturation. The minimum flow rate at which bubble formation is initiated varies from 8 to 15 m/s, depending on the design of the cavitation tube, which is within the range of feed slurry velocities of some newly developed cells. Feed aeration enhances the formation of micro-bubbles by hydrodynamic cavitation. The study suggests that the fast flotation kinetics of some new cells may be attributed in some degree to the formation of microscopic bubbles

Fine tungsten was used to mimic gold and fine and coarse silica and magnetite to mimic gangue. The optimum flow rate of fluidisation water varied from 1.7 l/min for fine silica to 5.6 l/min for coarse magnetite. Overloading at optimum flow rate was then investigated. With fine silica gangue no overload occurred under any of the conditions studied, and there was very little overload with fine magnetite. Coarse silica caused appreciable overload, but only after a significant bed of tungsten had been formed; with fine magnetite gangue the onset of overloading occurred earlier. Finally, with coarse magnetite severe overloading occurred almost immediately. Overloading was modelled using a first-order kinetic rate constant for erosion of the concentrate bed and a critical mass of constant above which it takes place. The results clearly demonstrate the importance of removing oversize to maximise recovery, particularly with a high-density gangue

A model of ore value distributions is presented that is the culmination of a statistical approach rather than simply a model that has been successfully applied to the evaluation of ore reserves. Detailed geological and physical observations based on large sampling data sets have been used to support the statistical modelling. Fundamental to the modelling process is the concept that the occurrence of a given grade value in space is a function not only of the presence of the mineral but also of the fact that it is associated with a specific trapping mechanism.
