ABSTRACT This paper evaluates the potential of freeze-thaw dewatering using Albian mature fine tailings (MFT). Freezing tests were first performed to study the effect of freezing rate on dewatering efficiency. Lower freezing rate resulted in higher thawed solids content and shear strength. Subsequently, large strain consolidation tests were conducted to investigate consolidation behaviour and how it is affected by freeze-thaw. The consolidation behaviour was presented in terms of effective stress versus void ratio and permeability versus void ratio. The results can be used to predict the field behaviour of Albian MFT and optimize the application of freeze-thaw for MFT dewatering.

Flotation is used in mining to produce concentrates of copper, gold and several other valuable ores. In 2017, a copper mine near Globe, Arizona improved their rougher cells productivity using technically advanced electro-hydraulic actuators in the flotation process by enabling excellent tank pulp level process stability. The new actuators controlled the dart valve position to allow pulp to leave the cell. Tank cell pulp level can change due to feed and discharge fluctuations from neighboring tanks. When traditional pneumatic actuators are used, they have sluggish response times and overshoot due to the inherent physical property of air being compressible. Electro-hydraulic actuators have the benefit of hydraulic stiffness to deliver accurate and repeatable (0.1%) dart valve positioning. The froth layer has more opportunity time to maximize mass transfer into the launderer. The results are an increase in copper recovery by 2-4%. INTRODUCTION In 2013 there was an international flotation technical conference well attended by respected flotation specialists for both mining companies and academia. During the technical session a leading metallurgist was discussing pulp level measurement and said that when he was on the cell deck he stated, pneumatic actuators air cylinders stroking up and down. The presenter then claimed with confidence that "I listened to actuator move so the pulp level in the tank was being controlled!" No one questioned his assumption and I can assert that the audience was quite technical and not shy in their critiques of speakers. The flotation community simply believed that the existing pneumatic technology was enough with no alternative. Having a stable flotation cell pulp level is critical to effective copper recovery. Controlling pulp levels in flotation cells is a complex task that includes modulating dart valves in each cell. The use of REXA Electraulic actuators will decrease the process dead time and maintain froth height in a controlled manner, especially from pulp slurry volume fluctuations from neighboring cells. By reducing flotation cell pulp level tank height variation, a copper mine in Arizona has realized a 2-4% recovery improvement by increasing the froth transfer to the launderers in the rougher cell circuits compared to pneumatic actuators. This paper examines the benefits of using an electro-hydraulic actuator to ensure proper pulp level control and reduce the process operational cost. It will focus on actuator positioning the dart valves to maintain pulp level setpoint at a copper mine in Arizona.

From the characteristics of the new (1976) electronic components and units that are being marketed, the author has tried to foresee the types and the performances of the near-future slope-monitoring equipment. Much-improved sensors, instruments and systems for pit use can now be developed - sun-powered telemetry remote stations are feasible, very sensitive as well as precise and drift-free liquid level inclinometers will be available, new techniques for distance measurement with lasers obviate the need for atmospheric corrections and the latest generation of desktop calculators have become easily programmed minicomputers. Thus, it is realistic to assume that fully automatic pit-slope monitoring systems will be operational in the foreseeable future.

"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. "INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is undergoing growth and change at a rapid rate. The modern flotation process was discovered only in the mid-twenties, and uranium leaching in the mid-fifties. The growth of individual unit equipment size is also a recent development and is perhaps most dramatically illustrated by the increase in size and connected horsepower in grinding mills. It is also apparent in much of the equipment used in mining operations.These technical and mechanical developments have influenced the design of plants but not to the expected degree.Many metallurgists believed until recently that grinding an ore in the absence of steel results in a loEs of selectivity in the flotation. However results reported by Thornton (1), Fahlstrom (2), Canmet (3 & 4) have shown on the contrary better selectivity and improved recovery at a lower operating cost. According to the Aitik (2) plant results, the net difference in cost plus tailing value in favour of the two-stage autogeneous grinding circuit is in the order of 40 cents per ton of ore milled. Even a greater difference was indicated by the results obtained by Canmet on a sample supplied by Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd.Yet how many plants are taking advantage of these findings and how many plants are being converted. How much more improvement of the results would have been obtained if these tests had incorporated optimization of classification efficiency? By nature the mining industry and the mineral processors are conservative, and tend to emphasize the possible penalties for an unsuccessful innovation out of proportion to the potential rewards even for a significant improvement."

"A comparison of data from INPUT, GEOTEM, and MEGATEM airborne electromagnetic (AEM) systems over the Aldermac deposit, Québec, Canada, was undertaken to evaluate the relative ef¬ficiency of these systems for the detection of small, deep conductors. The Aldermac orebody was mined between 1933 and 1934 to a depth of 200 m. A deeper mineralized zone was discovered in 1987. The MEGATEMII system was used to acquire 90- and 30-Hz data over the deposit in 2003 as part of a research project. These MEGATEMII data were compared with data acquired by other AEM systems (GEOTEM and INPUT), and the results show that the MEGATEMII response is ten times larger than the other sys¬tems. For the dB/dt response, 30 Hz gives a better signal-to-noise ratio, whereas 90 Hz has a better signal-to-noise ratio on the B-field.The data were evaluated by numerical modeling. The deposit was best represented by a complex mod¬el, comprising two weakly conductive bodies to approximate the alteration halo, two deeper prisms repre¬senting known orebodies, and three bodies ranging in thickness from 3 to 6 m and in resistivity from 12 to 20 ohm·m, representing the chargeable overburden. This implies that the MEGATEMII system is able to see a small conductive body at more than 200 m depth in an area where the response is contaminated by conductive overburden."

"Minera Penmont’s La Herradura is a joint venture between Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. and Newmont Mining Corporation. The mine is located in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. La Herradura consists of an open pit mine with a two-stage crushing plant and heap leaching facility. Gold is recovered from the pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process; production began in July 1998. La Herradura produces about 130 000 oz gold per year and its treatment capacity is approximately 22 000 t/d. Ore mineralization occurs in a shear zone with quartz and native gold. Gold distribution is quite heterogeneous due to coarse visible gold, which in some cases ranges from 100 to 600 microns.Sampling and assaying protocols were established during exploration and prior to start-up of operations, based on nomographs developed from early heterogeneity tests. However, as the coarse gold problem became noticeable, it was necessary to develop new sampling protocols to have an acceptable relative standard deviation to control the fundamental error within ± 15%.An experimental program was developed and conducted on a selected ore block consisting of 195 blastholes; regular ore grade control procedures were applied to both sets of data to evaluate the difference in results between the protocol established prior to start-up of operations (existing) and the new protocol (leaching). In the existing protocol, sub-sampling is done through riffle splitters, and coning and quartering. Fire assaying was used to estimate the gold content on a 50 g sample. In the leaching protocol, a 12 000 g sample of bottle-rolled cyanide was leached, and the leach residue was assayed on a 50 g sample using fire assaying, and a weighted average total gold content was calculated. Currently, a new alternative method is being evaluated, where sub-sampling is done using rotary splitters, and fire assay on a 50 g sample; in this rotary sampling protocol and for comparison purposes, gold assays were also repeated using the leaching protocol.Test results were compared in three groups: < 0.3 g/t (below cut-off), 0.3 to 0.8 g/t, and >0.8 g/t. Overall, results show that the protocol established prior to start-up of operations underestimates the gold assays. Detailed technical results, alternative options, and their implications are discussed in the paper."

Optimizing production scheduling in open pit mines is important for managing cash flows of mining operations. This paper describes a new, probabilistic, mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation which has been developed to minimize the risk of not achieving planned production targets, in terms of metal production and ore tonnage feed for the mill during production, while considering maximization of total discounted economic value. The new MIP model also recognizes that to minimize movement of excavators over long distances and accommodate equipment access, the blocks scheduled for mining within a period cannot be spread too widely. The model is applied to a laterite nickel-cobalt deposit, as an example of multi-element deposits that have complex ore quality constraints. The results show that the proposed model generates feasible schedules. When compared with traditional optimization techniques, the new model is superior in terms of minimizing the risk of not meeting production targets, especially at the early stages of production, and in terms of generating practical scheduling patterns.

"This paper discusses the project history, process design and layout of the Rainy River Gold Project mill. The circuit consists of a 55 x 83 primary crusher, 15 MW SAG mill and 15 MW ball mill. Both mills are twin pinion with LSS and VFD drives. A pebble crusher is located in the process plant with bypass and stockpile options. Gravity concentration followed by 30 hours of leach residence, carousel CIP, carbon recovery, cyanide destruction and tails disposal in a 1,428 hectare tailings management area (TMA).The Rainy River Gold Project is located approximately 65 km northwest of Fort Frances in north western Ontario. The project is scheduled to be commissioned and reach commercial production in mid-2017. Expected cost is $US877M and is comprised of an open pit mine, process plant, tailings management area and supporting infrastructure. "Geometallurgical mapping is a new team-based approach that documents variability within an orebody and quantifies the impact of geology (host rocks, alteration and structure) and mineralogy on grinding, metallurgical response and metal recovery processes. The quantitative, spatially constrained database that results can be readily integrated into 3-D block models and mine planning activities. Thus it is an important tool to reduce the technical risk associated with new mine developments or expansions.Normally undertaken during pre-feasibility or feasibility planning stages, the first step of geometallurgical mapping is to review the geology, mineralogy and other critical parameters and construct a geometallurgical matrix. This matrix provides an objective base to then guide sampling and/or compositing activity for physical property and metallurgical testing. Depending on the project, an array of testing techniques can be used to characterize the ore and feed data into the geometallurgical model.While the range and number of tests needed is project-dependant, the geometallurgical mapping approach allows the development of empirical models or interdependent relationships, grounded by spatially-constrained real data. Extensive data sets collected using less expensive testing methods can be meaningfully correlated with results from complex specialty tests to yield realistic metallurgical recovery data.With geometallurgical mapping completed, the resulting database can be integrated into an overall 3-D block mine model. This means that metallurgical response can be used to realistically forecast the recoveries of specific blocks, perhaps sampled only by drilling. Mine planning can then incorporate the forecasted metallurgical response and generate future project cash-flows; opening the door to economic optimization of the mine exploitation."

"Intensive mechanization and automation in the LKAB, Kiruna Mine in Sweden have resulted in substantial rise in productivity and decrease in production cost. Capital investment in a modern mine today averages a considerable amount per miner and costs increase with requirements for more efficient methods and equipment. Equipment reliability becomes more and more important. Equipment maintenance requirements are directly proportional to equipment reliability and grade of availability. Weaknesses in the equipment result in unnecessary costs with regard to maintenance which can add up considerably per year, but of more importance are the costs caused by equipment breakdown. These breakdowns disturb or interrupt the production and often cause damage to other parts of the system. This paper discusses the important parameters involved in mine car wheel wear and the design principles of wheels, axle suspension and track.IntroductionTrains operating in an underground mine do not follow the same standard of performance as trains operating on surface railways. The differences in speed, curve radius and environment require different methods of calculation for underground train systems, and when judging the parameters involved one must keep in mind these differences at all times.While surface railway technology was given all possible attention over the last century no one was seriously looking into underground rail haulage in the sense of rail vehicles performance on the track until LKAB in 1975 started to question the methods of calculations used. Even though LKAB by then attained mine car maintenance cost that was 1/6 to 1/10 of other mining companies they were not pleased with the situation. The objective for the ensuing engineering work was to derive the reasons for wear and breakdowns. Once those reasons were established, the design of a completely new generation of mine cars could start. The result of these efforts were beyond all expectations. The maintenance cost on mine cars had been reduced to 1/15 of prior car generation which already had comparatively low cost.The most significant cost savings were made on wheel maintenance, which earlier represented 50% to 55% of car maintenance. Wheel life was increased from an average of 3 to 30 years or more.The LKAB theories around wheel wear are described in the following report."

"A 15 cm diameter by 732 cm height, fully automated pilot column was installed in the Agnico-Eagle’s Laronde concentrator (Québec), for evaluating the performance of newly developed sensors and advanced process control algorithms. For eventual comparison purposes, the pilot column is continuously fed with the same slurry feeding the copper-circuit third cleaner column. It is equipped with electrical conductivity-based sensors for estimating the three variables used in the multi-variable control algorithm under evaluation: froth depth, fraction of wash water underneath the interface and gas hold-up. Froth depth is regulated using a PI controller while a predictive controller is formulated as the minimization of the tracking errors of gas hold-up and bias rate, keeping several operating constraints between their practical upper and lower limits. In particular, an unreachable high set point of gas hold-up can be selected in order to maximize the bubble surface area available for particle collection, while maintaining bias rate above a minimum value required for froth cleaning. The proposed strategy may indirectly help optimizing flotation column operation by using these secondary variables, without the implementation of a real-time optimization layer.INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have already been used for more than 30 years, mainly in cleaning stages, as a result of their froth washing capabilities. Despite their widespread usage, the measurement of some pertaining variables and their use for automatic control is rather scarce. Among the most important variables directly related to the process metallurgy (concentrate grade and recovery), froth depth (hf) is the only one normally monitored and controlled. Even though commercial sensors are available, gas hold-up (eg), a variable directly related to concentrate recovery, is seldom measured and never controlled. Another important variable, bias rate (Jb) responsible for concentrate cleaning, is simply not measured at all, as there is no commercial sensor available. Therefore, besides froth depth, continuous monitoring of process variables is limited to flow rates (gas, feed, tailings, wash water), i.e. to manipulated variables. Some new available sensors have been industrially tested, e.g. the Sonar-TracTM for eg (O'Keefe, Viega & Fernald, 2007) and the McGill hold-up sensor (Tavera & Escudero, 2002). Others, for bias rate and frother concentration, have been successfully validated at laboratory scale by Laval’s LOOP researchers (Maldonado, Desbiens, del Villar & Chirinos, 2008b; Maldonado, Desbiens, del Villar & Aguilera, 2010a). Some devices have been extensively used for monitoring bubble size and space distri-bution, e.g. McGill bubble viewer (Gomez & Finch, 2007) and others."

"This paper studies the progress made by hydraulic shovel manufacturers over the last few years, particularly in the areas of productivity increase and operating cost reductions.Five years ago, it was widely considered that the unit production cost for a hydraulic shovel in a mining application was double that of a cable shovel in the same application. The hydraulic machine manufacturers have taken up this challenge, and modern improvements in design, coupled with changes in maintenance techniques, have narrowed the gap to the point where it is valid to ask the question ""will the cable shovel exist in ten years&apos; time?"".Historical BackgroundThe history of the cable shovel goes back to the early 19th century and the industrial revolution. Early machines were steam-powered and ran on rails.The ""power shovel"" and the ""dragline"" were the only mechanical means of mass excavation until the early 1950s. Rail-mounted units gave way to crawlers, which increased flexibility considerably. Some shovels were redesigned as backhoes, and some became extremely large when designed as stripping shovels primarily used in North American coal mines.In the early 1950s growth in hydraulic technology spawned the introduction of the hydraulic excavator, which soon began to replace the smaller cable shovels and backhoes used in the construction industry. They were completely self-contained with either a gasoline or diesel engine and, being much lighter, were more readily transportable.As the excavators grew in size from its early models of 0.5 m3 or less, many of the cable shovel models were discontinued. This was not surprising for several reasons, but the most obvious is that both were often made by the same manufacturer."

One key to maintaining successful mining operations in today?s global economy is in having the ability to access real-time machine operating data ([1] G. Brown, B. Ebacher, W. Koellner,2000)([2] Brochure of Siemens E&A, Order Number 141000-1). With recent and ongoing advances in mining equipment systems it is imperative that mine managers have full knowledge of the status of their equipment at any given point in time. This knowledge is critical to ensuring that the productivity of each and every machine is maximized. Knowledge of machine status is only the first step, however, in controlling and optimizing a piece of mining equipment. Computer based diagnostic systems, traditionally offered on mining equipment, have provided a link for collecting data and trouble-shooting problems as they occur. One problem existed, though, that those systems stopped short of providing full drive systems access. A maintenance technician could see the data but to make critical adjustments or make repairs the technician needed to be on the machine. In extreme cases the machine would be down until OEM assistance could reach the mine site. The key then to reducing down-time and maximizing machine productivity was creating a system that could not only monitor drive systems but also provide remote access to those systems. Essentially a link needed to be created through which a technician could gain drive access remotely then make adjustments or repairs without being on the piece of equipment. This paper will introduce AccessDirectTM, a new remote diagnostic system for Bucyrus mining shovels and draglines. AccessDirectTM combines all three important elements of remote diagnostics: ? Vital Signs and Production Monitoring (SiRAS-M) ? Automatic analysis (SiRAS-A) of faults, and tracking of trends for preventive and reliability centered maintenance , and ? Fast, direct Intervention (SiRAS ? I) for troubleshooting support, repairs, and system optimization.

"P.T Freeport Indonesia's new SAG mill commenced operation in February 1995. The reclaim system consists of four apron feeders and a series of three conveyors. The feeders are used in various combinations and relative speeds to blend SAG mill feed. It was recognized during design of the control system that effective automatic control would require dead-time and gain compensation. The successful implementation of the Dahlin algorithm to provide variable dead-time and gain compensation is described and compared to Pl control.RésumeL'opération du nouveau SAG de P.T. "In 1942, commercial mining operations began in what is now the Lucky Friday Ag/Pb/Zn mine in Idaho’s Silver Valley. Wholly owned since 1962 by Hecla Mining Company, the mine has produced more than 145 million ounces of silver and has been a mainstay producer in Idaho’s Silver Valley for over 70 years.However, by the early 21st century, the mill had fallen, technologically, seriously behind the rest of the industry. Accordingly, starting in 2005, the current mill management team set to revitalizing the milling operation. This paper will describe how the mill was systematically evaluated and the aging infrastructure replaced with more current technology. Driven by internal mill review studies supported by QEMSCAN mineralogical balancing, the mill has in recent years been through waves of upgrading – from the installation of new mechanical and column flotation equipment to the introduction of on-stream analysis, a technology well-accepted around most of the industry but alien to this technologically conservative mining district.The experience at Lucky Friday is a testament to the need for ongoing structured mill optimisation and technology upgrading in established mining operations. This paper will describe engineering experiences associated with upgrading equipment in an operating mill, contained in a confined building. Experiences in teaching the team new ways of operating a mill, and finally the metallurgical rewards that have been reaped will be described.INTRODUCTIONMining in Idaho’s Silver ValleyIdaho’s Silver Valley is a 64-km long valley flanked by the US Northern Rocky mountains, seldom more the 3-km wide, and stretching across much of Idaho’s northern panhandle, roughly 150 km south of the Canadian border. Mining has been continuously active in the area for more than 140 years, during which time, the Silver Valley has become one of the richest silver producing districts in the world, and as of 1985 had out-produced the 500 years of production from the famed Potosi district in Bolivia. Since 1885, almost 100 deposits have been discovered and worked in the district (Chapman, 2000)."

"Due to the high reactivity of sulfide minerals in alkaline cyanide solutions, some parasitic reactions inflict a heavy gold surface passivation and excess cyanide consumption resulting in a dramatic decrease of the gold leaching rate. Atmospheric pre-oxidation was shown to be an effective tool to enhance gold extraction by preventing a passive film from forming on the surface of gold grains. This work aims to highlight efforts undertaken to determine: (1) how gold cyanidation is limited by passivation; (2) what are the reactions and mechanisms involved during gold cyanidation; and (3) how a better understanding of fundamental issues can be used to design a proper pre-oxidation strategy. INTRODUCTION Precious metals (PM), gold in particular, naturally occur in contact within a wide range of sulfide mineral systems. Hence, one of today’s most challenging R&D tasks consists in accounting for the presence of sulfides on the cyanidation behavior of gold. An important body of knowledge reveals that metal sulfides display a range of reactivities in alkaline cyanide solutions (Marsden & House, 2006). Such reactivities are acknowledged to inflict additional utility costs and loss of profits because they are accompanied with higher consumption of cyanide and/or formation of undesirable by-products that are often detrimental to gold leaching rates. Gold recovery in cyanidation is hampered by a multitude of factors, among others: (1) consumption of excess cyanide as a result of the formation of thiocyanate and dissolution of transition (Cu, Fe, Zn, etc.) metals (Habashi, 1967); (2) gold surface passivation by solid reaction products, e.g., Fe(OH)3 (Guo, Deschenes, Pratt, Fulton & Lastra, 2005), sulfur (Dai & Jeffrey, 2006; Jeffrey & Breuer, 2000;) or oxo and thiooxo (SbO33- SbS33-) salts in alkaline solutions (Guo et al., 2005). Because of their energy structure, most of the sulfide minerals exhibit semiconductor properties (Marsden & House, 2006). Therefore, the contact between constitutive sulfide minerals inside complex sulfurous ores entrains electrochemical phenomena in which sulfide dissolution is a genuine corrosion process (Azizi, Petre, Olsen & Larachi, 2010). For instance, galvanic interactions could be initiated between the various constituents within the ore and could substantially increase or decrease the reactivity of some of the associated minerals."

"In this paper I will summarized the Falconbridge Nickel Mines1) energy costs and consumption data by fuel, process, cost centre and estimate our future costs and consumption patterns 2) detail the distribution of electrical energy 3) distribution of other forms of energy 4) describe present and planned energy conservation schemes; and 5) discuss economic justification and responsibility.There is sufficient material in this presentation to warrant several technical papers, however we felt that an overview of all our data and endeavors on the subject, would be most beneficial to those companies formulating energy conservation plans. The data briefly referred to in this slide presentation can be found in the technical paper.Over a five year period, total energy costs will vary between $63 and $94 MM depending on the future rate of energy cost escalation. An unrealistic 32% reduction in energy consumption is required to hold our own in the years ahead whereas an attainable 10°;, reduction in energy consumption would save $9 MM over this five year period.Total energy consumption, tonnage of ore delivered to plants and their ration BTU’s per ton of ore, are graphed for the years 1973 through 1976 and forecasted for the 1980’s. In 1974 we along with other member companies of the Mining Association, determined our purchased energy per ton consumption rate and set, as our goal, a 20% reduction by 1980. The dotted lines calculated from the energy audit, based on 1976 data shows there is a potential for a 10% increase in energy per ton. This could result from a lower than forecasted mining rate and operation of the new roasting, electric furnace and acid recovery facilities installed for environmental considerations at designed capacity."

"A number of technologies are in practice for selectively removing coarse gold from conventional grinding circuits. These circuits are often designed so that the grinding mill output is size classified, with large (or high density) particles being removed before the tails are returned to the mill. Because of the high relative SG of gold, and the fact that some forms of gold such as free gold do not break apart during conventional grinding, coarse gold can accumulate in the circulating load, and eventually be lost.Eriez has developed a flotation cell that uses fluidized water to enhance flotation of coarse particles. More than 40 units have been sold in industrial minerals, and we are now exploring applications for the HydroFloat® in the gold industry.Mineros S.A currently produces approximately 120,000 oz of gold per year by gravity concentrating alluvial gold ore with a mean particle size of 330 microns, followed by further concentration using a Falcon separator. A 400 mm diameter pilot-scale HydroFloat® was added to the tails of the Falcon to test whether additional gold could be captured. Enrichments of 50-600 times and recoveries normally in excess of 95% were achieved. This allowed direct smelting of the gold concentrate. Metallurgical results and operating parameters such as water addition and power will be discussed during the presentation.This result opens the possibility that the HydroFloat® could be used directly in the grinding circuit, for removing coarse gold in the circulating load. This work also shows the possibility that the HydroFloat® can produce a throwaway tail, which will reduce the size of the circulating load stream and the grinding requirements of the circuit."
