Azbe System of Controlled Calcination To obtain good and cheap lime there are certain fundamental requirements that need to be satisfied. These are : (1) Proper combustion of fuel and steady supply of heat to the kiln. (2) Proper heat distribution in the kiln. (3) Uniform drawing of lime through the several shaft sections. (4) Complete cooling of the lime and recovery of the heat. (5) Temperature control of the hot zone by economical means. (6) Ample draft to obtain high capacity. (7) Arrangements to facilitate operation. Figure 17 shows diagrammatically one of the smaller kilns, intended for large stone. Such a kiln can be supplied with gas from a centrally located automatic gas producer, or, as shown, from an integral producer located snugly against the kiln. These producers make very good gas and have a gasification capacity of either 10 or 15 tons of coal a day. The producers have water-sealed ash pits, a rather thick fuel bed that is conducive to the making of high-CO gas, and are under forced draft. No steam is used. Clinkering is prevented by admixing some spent gas from the kiln with the air. Coal feeding is from a coal bunker through spouts into the hoppers over the producer. This is done, at proper intervals, by manual operation of slides, but it is planned to install mechanical feeders. Central mechanical gas producers have the advantage of requiring little labour, but the blowing of soot is a problem, as also is the proper distribution of the gas among several kilns. In the case of integral gas producers, soot from the centre burner is blown back into the producer to be burned, and the supply of gas to the kiln is controlled by regulation of air to the producer. In large plants, the mechanical producer may be preferable, but in small ones, the integral producer is cheaper, better, and more reliable. The kiln shown in Figure 17 is suitable for both systems of gas supply. It will be noticed that there are no side gas burners. All gas enters the kiln through the centre burner in a manner that permits any desired amount of gas to be directed to any of the kiln sections by the aid of regulating slides.

Extensive field study has been performed to assess the capabilities of thin sprayon liners (TSLs) and conventional spray-on support systems for preventing rock and support material damage that often results due to mining-induced rockbursts. Support performance was studied using field scale explosive detonation trials to simulate dynamic failure effects that are known to develop during typical rockburst events. Multiple seismic and high speed photographic monitoring techniques were used to provide detailed information concerning rock motion, surface fracturing, ejected fragment motion, and support liner survivability characteristics. Results of this study have demonstrated that TSL?s and variant layer combinations may be as effective as or better than conventional support materials for mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments. In this study, field results have been verified using numerical modeling procedures to better understand the support behaviour of TSLs when subjected to highly stressed mine environments and mining-induced rockbursts, a factor that is essential when designing any rock support system. A series of numerical modeling assessments were conducted using FLAC3D modeling of a half circular TSL-lined tunnel, influenced by anisotropic stresses and simulated mining-induced rockbursts, to investigate the support potential of TSLs under prototype conditions. The effect of a mine rockburst was simulated using the three-dimensional dynamic analysis option of FLAC3D. Results of TSL-lined tunnels in highly stressed and mine rockburst conditions indicated exceptional effectiveness of TSLs for suppressing rock deterioration resulting from stresses and rockbursts. The rock support potential of TSLs on tunnel surfaces was compared with that of thin shotcrete linings, and results indicated that thin spray-on lining products currently available may be equally as effective in support as shotcrete materials.

Mining companies are now looking for more effective ways to engage the community in public participation. Consensus-based approaches are becoming the most popularly applied way of achieving meaningful public participation. This paper introduces the principles surrounding consensus-building approaches and the processes for getting them started. The Healthy Communities Movement is one such consensus-based approach that offers a well-established holistic model for conceptualizing a healthy sustainable community. It also highlights the importance of public participation as an essential component of achieving a sustainable community. The paper concludes by illustrating how current company-community relations programs can utilize these models.

"Load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are typically used in underground metal mining operations. Delays or inappropriate use of LHDs can result in production loss. Optimized LHD use is especially crucial in larger mines because longer travel distances increase heat, dust, and gas emissions, which in turn increase ventilation costs. This study, conducted at an existing Swedish sublevel cave underground mine, used discrete event simulation and the AutoMod™ DES tool to determine the ventilation costs related to using too many diesel LHDs in a production area with reduced ore pass availability. When fewer ore passes are available, ventilation costs related to operating LHDs in the production area were found to increase by as much as 200, 224, and 306% for one, three, and six LHDs in operation, respectively. ¦ KEYWORDS Discrete event simulation (DES), Loading operations, Production rate, Ventilation costs RÉSUMÉ Dans les exploitations souterraines d’extraction des métaux, on utilise généralement des chargeurs-transporteurs (LHD, de l’anglais Load-haul-dump machines). Load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are designed for such an environment. Models are available to suit specific features of the working environment such as small, large, or narrow open stopes (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). When carrying a full load, haulage speed is higher for LHDs than for front-end loaders with the same engine size. Also, payloads are approximately 50% higher for LHDs than for front-end loaders (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). LHDs are capable of climbing steep (Bloss, Harvey, Grant, & Routley, 2011). The haulage distance between stope and ore pass is usually between 50 m and 400 m. LHDs are efficient for tramming distances up to 200 m (Bloss et al., 2011), whereas when loading trucks, the LHDs work efficiently when the distance is less than 100 m (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). The largest diesel-powered LHDs, with drive motors of up to 350 kW, can handle a payload of 21 t (Wennmohs, 2014). Most mining equipment runs on diesel fuel, which provides flexibility, high durability, and high efficiency (Pronk, Coble, & Stewart, 2009); however, other alternatives such as electric, hybrid diesel/electric, or hydrogen fuel cell machines are increasingly being developed and used. This change is due to diesel-powered machines accounting for a significant portion of the ventilation costs in the mine (Chadwick, 2008; Paraszczak, Laflamme, & Fytas, 2013). "The objective of this project is to investigate methods to lower the sulphate concentrations in the mill effluent. Currently, the concentration of sulphate in mill effluent is approximately 2 g/L. The high concentration of sulphate ion in the effluent has the potential to become a regulatory issue. The target sulphate concentration in mill effluent for this work was less than 500 mg/L. The pilot studies, using sulphate precipitation, were carried out at the mill. The results of the sulphate precipitation pilot study, using calcium hydroxide and sodium aluminate, indicated that:• The sulphate concentrations in effluent could be reduced to less than 500 mg/L.• The concentrations of most other elements of concern, such as selenium, arsenic, cobalt, nickel and vanadium, were also reduced.INTRODUCTIONHistorically, the concentration of sulphate, SO4 2-, in water has not generally been subject to regulation. However, with the increasing global consumption of water, stricter regulations on sulphate quantity may be imposed. Sulphate is a concern in process waters as it forms scale on process equipment and leads to operational problems. High sulphate concentrations may result in adverse health effects. The taste theshhold for the most sulphate salts in drinking water ranges from 250 to 500 mg/L.A literature search and review to identify methods to reduce sulphate concentration in the mill effluent was carried out. A number of methods were selected and tested in the lab. The experimental results indicated that the precipitation methods, using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compounds, barium compounds, as well as the ion exchange and the membrane methods, were effective for the removal of sulphate to below the required limits. Some other elements, such as vanadium, nickel, cobalt, selenium and molybdenum, were also removed.The process, using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compound for sulphate precipitation, similar to the Cost Effective Sulphate Removal (CESR), also known as “Walhalla” process, described in the Montana Tech report (“Demonstration Of Sulfate Removal” 1999), was selected for further consideration [1]. In the CESR process, the water is treated with lime for precipitation of gypsum, followed by the reaction with a proprietary aluminum compound for removal of a residual sulphate. The final pH adjustment is carried out using carbon dioxide. Results of a preliminary cost estimate indicated that the removal of sulphate using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compound was the preferred method of treatment, considering its low cost, availability of chemicals and minimal changes to the existing plant circuit."

"Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing technology is a decommissioning approach for inactive coal, uranium and base metal operations. To improve acid mine drainage water some fundamental aspects of wetland ecology and sediment microbiology are combined, to provide conditions to allow for biomineralization of the contaminants.This paper summarizes the first records of microbial alkalinity generation in acid mine drainage through the utilisation of the ARUM process. The process requires that the seepage is at pH 4.5 where sulphate reducers utilize sulphate to produce hydrogen sulphide, which in turn precipitates with metals. The pH increase is brought about by alkalinity generating microbes.The ARUM process has been successful in increasing the pH from 2.5 to 7.0. Flow through reactors operated in the laboratory continuously for more than 60 days have removed Ni from 13 mg/L to < 0.01 mg/L. Design parameters are being developed for low flow rates of 5 L/min in a test system receiving seepage from a tailings.1.0 INTRODUCTIONAcid mine drainage associated with mining wastes poses a significant environmental problem. Conventional means to treat acid mine drainage (AMD) use chemical treatment system. Ecological Engineering technology uses natural biological means to curtail and ameliorate AMD during mine operations and at the time of decommissioning. The premise underlying Ecological Engineering technology is that AMD is the result of a natural process enhanced by mining activities. Therefore, in nature, a process providing a natural balance to AMD has to exist, which, when assisted through appropriate means, can counteract the detrimental effects of AMD on the environment. This process is microbial alkalinity generation which is known to occur in wetlands, lake and ocean sediments (Baas Becling et al, 1960)."

"The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of southeastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). This pegmatite body was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from, its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANGO) in 1967 and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco is currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Beryl co Inc. of Boston, and the Province of Manitoba. (Williams and others 1978, Burt 1979, Burt and others 1982), continued until the end of 1982, when, due to falling demand and prices, operations were suspended.During the 1970's Tanco had investigated the potential of the lithium orebody; carrying our research into both the concentration of the ore and into the production of lithium chemicals. However lithium chemicals were in an over-supply situation, due in part to the production from Chilean brine deposits (Buckley, 1983), and Tanco' s own plans were put into abeyance. The potential alternative market, the direct use of concentrates in the glass and ceramics industry, did not at the time justify the cost of constructing a new plant."

Belt conveyors are widely used in materials handling industries. The bulk materials which can be transported include ores, coal, earth, grain, limestone, wood chips, fertilizer components such as potash and many others. Along with the new technology development and enhanced industrial automation requirements, belt conveyor instrumentation has also been modernized to improve conveyor availability and performance. Traditionally, belt conveyors are equipped with emergency pull cord switches to shut the conveyor down, misalignment switches to signal the belt offline condition, speed sensors to detect the belt slippage, and level switches to prevent material plugging in the discharge chute. Belt rip detectors are also normally provided for long belt conveyors. As a rule, equipment condition monitoring is not automated at most operating facilities, but is performed manually by maintenance staff via time-based surveillance. The new generation of condition monitoring instrumentation and control equipment can be successfully utilized to design a reliable, cost-effective, and centralized monitoring system, capable of monitoring a wide variety of mechanical equipment. The implementation of the condition monitoring automated system can provide continual monitoring of the plant equipment to ensure safe operation of the equipment to its required capacity. Any abnormal behavior of the motors, gear reducers and pulleys can be analyzed, alarmed, and recorded immediately, so problems can be detected and resolved before critical components failure. Therefore, the current trend is to provide the belt conveyors with condition monitoring system in addition to the traditional instrumentation, where temperature probes and vibration sensors can be installed on motors, gear reducers and all pulleys. Another innovative development is a three-in-one type belt rip detector which combines laser, tray and cord type detection together to ensure a prompt belt tear indication. The purpose of this paper is to present the latest development of belt conveyor instrumentation and introduce the application of newly developed instruments.

"Nuclear explosions are currently being planned for use in oil and gas production, the recovery of oil from oil shale, gas storage and copper leaching. The current status of each of these projects is discussed, with emphasis on the economics of each application. The first commercial application of nuclear explosives will be in gas stimulation. Project Gasbuggy will be rapidly followed by two additional shots, also related to gas production. These three events, each in a different formation, will be described in this paper with a discussion on their significance to the world's oil and gas industry. The use of nuclear explosives in oil and gas stimulation should be a standard accepted practice within a few years. Calculations based on explosions in media such as tuff, alluvium, granite and dolomite predict large increases in productivity when nuclear devices are used in tight, thick formations. The broken-up rock resulting from the explosion becomes the new well bore, with a production rate of six to twelve times that of a normally completed well.Also included in the paper is a discussion of the real or possible problems associated with nuclear explosive engineering. The only major foreseeable problem is the seismic shock wave. This limits the size of explosive which can be used near important surface structures. A discussion is included on the radiation problem, which we believe to be largely psychological in the case of contained explosions."

"Abstract - The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumed late Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: monzonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group of rocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or mining district, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu and Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1) porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfide deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, eastwest, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolution of the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic mineralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magma may have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Plutons similar to the ESS should be good targets for mineral exploration. Résumé - Le Stock de East Sullivan (SES) est une intrusion composite alcaline d’âge tardiarchéen, situé dans le camp minier de Val d’Or. Trois principaux faciès ont été identifiés: une monzonite sensu stricto, une monzonite porphyrique et un porphyre trachytique vert. Les données chimiques montrent que ce groupe des roches monzonitiques est relativement homogène en composition avec des concentrations élevées de Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr, Mo et ETRL, définissant une suite alcaline typique. Cet alkalin stock peut être facilement distingué des autres unités géologiques de la région de Val d’Or, tel le batholite de Bourlamaque, par une concentration élevée de Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cu et d’Au. Le SES contient plusieurs importants prospects de métal précieux (Au) et de métaux de base (Cu, Mo), incluant: (1) une minéralisation disséminée de type porphyre Cu-Mo-Au, (2) une minéralisation de Cu-Au dans les roches volcaniques encaissantes hôtesses près du contact et (3) une minéralisation d’or pyritique dans une zone de cisaillement de direction est-nordest. Le SES est bien défini sur la carte aéromagnétique en couleurs du gradient vertical par des zonages concentriques, où quatre linéaments structuraux ont été reconnus: 035°-55°, 320°-300°, est-ouest, et nord-sud. "By any measure of common practice, Claude Resources' Seabee Gold Mine in Northern Saskatchewan should not now be operating. Not because reserves dwindled, or grade dropped or prices weakened or technical problems arose, but because a host of unimaginable other problems beset the project, any one of which would normally have led to the mine's failure.The success of the Seabee Mine, and it is extremely successful, is a story of the vision and blunt determination of two men. Neither is remarkable in his own right but each possesses the characteristics which were necessary to forge a highly productive and profitable narrow-vein mine in the midst of the most bizarre and unpredictable events which likely have ever beset a mine start-up in Canadian history.Together, Bill MacNeill, a Saskatchewan born, former bush pilot and Ray Gagnon, a big hearted, hard-fisted, miner with 44 years of experience in Canada's underground, built the Seabee Mine.They didn't accomplish this with brilliant geology, outstanding engineering or nimble corporate manouvering but rather a stubbornness and raw common sense which likely are all too often, ingredients missing in failed projects.The Seabee Mine is 100% owned by Claude Resources, a Saskatoon based company taken over by Bill MacNeill, its current chairman, in 1982. The company is listed on the TSE and produces 1200 barrels of oil per day and about 60,000 oz of gold per year. The company has a strong balance sheet, is very profitable and has 18 million shares outstanding.The Seabee property in Northern Saskatchewan started out like many other gold exploration properties in Canada.It was discovered in the l 940's by what is now Cominco, and, while highly regarded by that company the property sat largely dormant until acquired by Claude Resources in 1985.Claude did what most junior exploration companies would do and went looking for a company with a depth of expertise to joint venture the property.That company was Placer Development who could earn a 55% interest in the Seabee by delivering a bankable feasibility study on the Project by July 1988 and providing financing to production.Placer Development was an excellent company and spent over $8 million dollars on the Seabee over a 3 year period. Unfortunately for Claude Resources, Placer Development merged with Dorne Mines in 1987 and the new merged company, Placer Dome, established a minimum production threshold greater than the 50,000 oz per year which the Seabee appeared capable of supporting at that time. Placer Dome's request for an indefinite extension of the joint venture agreement to allow it to drill off a larger ore body was rejected by Claude Resources and the Seabee Property was returned to Claude in 1988."

On September 3rd, 1947, the Acadia Coal Company put into operation a central coal preparation plant. This plant was designed to process all coals mined by this Company in the Pictou County coal field. The problem, briefly, was to make a three-way separation of the raw coal fed into the plant. It was desired to remove all stone, metal, and wood from the marketable coal and to produce a splint coal from the raw material which would be suitable for making power. This splint coal product is belted directly to the power plant which is adjacent to the wash plant. To attain this object it was therefore necessary, first, to wash the raw coal, removing all splint, stone, metal, and wood. The stone, metal, wood, and highest-ash splint had then to be removed by a second washing in order to obtain the lower-ash splint for use in the power plant. The plant is on the east side of the Allan colliery, in the town of Stellarton (see accompanying photograph). It is of steel frame construction with wood siding, covered on the exterior with corrugated galvanized iron. Considerable concrete had to be poured for the foundation piers as the plant site is largely &apos;fill&apos; ground. This necessitated the construction of extremely heavy footings containing a large amount of reinforcing steel. In all, 884 cu. yds. of concrete were poured for the various pits, tanks, and foundations; its average test was about 3,500 lb. per square inch. At the time the plant was constructed, the steel shortage in Canada and the United States was acute and, in order to obtain steel for the structure which is four stories high- an unused part of the Allan bankhead was torn down. Enough steel was obtained from this demolition to fabricate the new plant.

"Pamour Porcupine Mines of Timmins, Ontario operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the area. The area milling concept was adopted by Pamour in 1971 and has been used successfully since then. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the advantages and the problems of area milling. Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the Porcupine region. The area milling concept was adopted as the route to survival for Pamour and has worked successfully. HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDProduction of gold from the Porcupine region in Northern Ontario started in the early 1900's and has been continuous since that time. Some of the major operators were companies such as Mcintyre, Hollinger, Dome, Pamour, Paymaster and the list goes on. An underground survey would reveal hundreds of miles of drifts and raises. The main group of mines extends from South East of Timmins to the Pamour Mine, 15 miles to the east. During the lean years of the sixties when gold prices were low, labour costs were rising rapidly, and ore grades were dropping, many of the area mines closed down their operations."

Many advances have been made concerning the automation of heavy equipment teleoperators such as those found in mining. Complete automation, however, is not achieved yet and the operation of these vehicles still relies on the presence of a human operator. Fortunately, a lot of research has been done in order to improve the performance of these human-machine systems. This paper presents the characteristics of different control modes and input devices used for the control interface of those telemanipulators. We describe the benefits and drawbacks of each particular control interface on the overall system performance, based on a review of research in the field. We conclude with some recommendations and a discussion of future research needs, given the new potential advances offered by virtual environment technology and embedded computing.

Introduction In November, 1927, a paper was presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division by H. A. Pearse(l), in which he described the milling practice at Britannia and set forth the metallurgical results which were being obtained at that time. In the intervening four years, various changes and additions have been made in equipment and practice, which have resulted in marked improvements in efficiency and costs. These changes and their effects are discussed in the present paper. During the past few years two major changes have been made in plant equipment. The first of these was the. elimination of an intermediate crushing stage by discarding two gyratory crushers in favour of two Symons cone crushers. The latter installation-now effects in one stage a greater reduction than was formerly accomplished in two, that is, by the gyratories together with a set of rolls. The second important change in equipment took place when the original M.S. flotation machines were replaced by six Forrester pneumatic machines, so that now the flotation department consists entirely of machines of this type. A number of minor changes and some further additions to equipment have also been effective in raising plant capacity and concentrate grade, while making noticeable reductions in tailing losses and costs of ore treatment.

This paper discusses the application of the computer to coal preparation process predictions. In broad terms, the computer is used to perform two main functions. Firstly, the given float-sink analysis is interpolated and extrapolated to cover the entire actual range of raw coal specific gravity. Assumptions based on historical data must be made at times. Secondly, the partition curve, which, from historical data, defines the efficiency of a specific coal washing process, is applied to the washability data in order to determine the expected clean coal yield and quality. The vast amount of numerical work which is required to make a prediction of this type exhibits the need for computer methods in this area.

"The Strathcona Concentrator is one of three concentrators presently operated in the Sudbury District by the Nickel Division of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Production commenced in 1968 at a milling rate of 6,300 tons per operating day. Milling capacity was increased in 1970 to 7,200 tons per operating day. 7he ore contains iron, nickel and copper primarily in the form of pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, while the common gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc and chlorite. The primary function of the concentrators is not only to liberate sulphides from silicate gangue minerals but also to separate pyrrhotite from the more valuable minerals pentlandite and chalcopyrite.SummaryExcessive wear on steel liners and blinding of grates in a regrind pebble mill of the Hardy Concentrator was corrected by the use of rubber liners and grates. The success of these resulted in their installation as original linings In all grinding units except the rod mills at the Strathcona Concentrator. The operation of rubber liners and grates when sized mine ore was used as the grinding medium was satisfactory confirming the Hardy Concentrator experience. Problems developed when the grinding medium was changed from sized mine ore to steel balls in that blinding of the grates occurred. This resulted in conversion of the units to overflow type mills through removal of the grates. The lifter bar life was significantly increased by using higher lifter bars.Grinding PracticeOperation of a regrind pebble mill commenced in 1961 in the Hardy Concentrator. This operation demonstrated the economic feasibility of using sized mine ore as grinding medium. Problems caused by excessive wear of metal liners and grates combined with blinding of the grates were corrected in 1964 through installation of rubber liners and grates."

It is generally recognized that the interpretation of bedrock geochemical data in volcanic terrains can be improved by adjusting for rock-type. Various chemical attributes of volcanic rocks have been put forward in the literature as rapid indicators of rock-type, but there is some question as to which of these is the most reliable . Only one such attribute, total iron, seems to have seen systematic use in geochemical mapping in the Flin Flon region. Discriminant analysis of 500 basalts, andesites, dacites and rhyolites suggests that SiO2 is the most important rock-discriminating variable and that MgO, CaO, TiD2, AI2O3 and FeOtot, are successively poorer discriminators. Lithological normalization in the subalkaline volcanic environment should therefore be made over ranges of this variable. Trace-metal data from drill core through the sulphide orebody at Hanson Lake, Saskatchewan are used to demonstrate various approaches to lithological correction, including silica normalization, factor analysis and trend analysis. All of these extract economically important information from the core that is not apparent in the raw data logs. However, silica normalization does not seem to be subject to as many serious limitations as factor and trend analysis in this case, and therefore seems to provide the most reliable basis for the interpretation of subsurface exploration geochemical data.
