"Industrial flotation columns often suffer from low recoveries and high maintenance requirements because of poorly-designed air spargers. The MicrocelTM bubble generators were developed at Virginia Tech to overcome these problems. In this system, small air bubbles are generated by circulating a portion of the flotation pulp through a set of static in-line mixers. The small bubbles improve flotation kinetics and allow a higher recovery (or capacity) to be achieved. Other advantages of the system include reduced air consumption, plug-free operation and on-line maintenance. This article discusses the advantages of the MicrocelTM bubble generators and presents examples of successful in-plant demonstrations.IntroductionColumn cells are widely accepted in industry for cleaner operations because they are more selective than mechanically-agitated conventional cells. The improved selectivity can be attributed to the use of wash water which minimizes the entrainment of fine gangue particles into the froth product. Columns may also produce higher recoveries if the air sparging system is properly designed and steps are taken to minimize back-mixing. Furthermore, the quiescent conditions afforded by column cells may be beneficial for recovering coarse particles that are readily detached from bubbles under more turbulent conditions. Also, properly-designed columns offer advantages in terms of savings in floor space, reduced operating and capital costs, and simplified circuitry.It is unfortunate, however, that some of the advantages of columns are not fully realized in industrial practice. Some column circuits are unable to achieve their design capacity, while others require extensive maintenance programs. These shortcomings can usually be attributed to deficiencies associated with the design, scale-up and operation of the air-sparging system. In this article, some of the basic problems associated with commercial air sparging systems are discussed and alternatives are suggested."

Abosso Goldfields Limited has been optimizing the comminution circuit at the Damang Mine Operation for the treatment of 100% primary ore. The optimization process started at a base rate of 343 tph when treating primary crushed primary ore, and was increased to above 600 tph with partially crushed primary ore. Abosso Goldfields engaged Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) to assist with the optimization process in 2009 and the two companies have been working together since, to further refine the process. Continuous improvement was achieved through crushing circuit modifications, changes in operating processes and grinding control system utilization. This paper discusses the improvements developed for the increase in milling capacity and improvements in final product size.

"With the narrow vein structure of Nova Scotia gold deposits, selective mining is rarely possible and mill heads will be too low (below 0.10 oz per ton of gold) to support a conventional mill of up to 1000 ton per day capacity at present gold prices. The recent operation of a small 100 t.p.d. mill at Cochrane Hill using fine grinding - leaching - filtration supported this assertion. Milling costs exceeded $25.00/ton of feed mainly due to high capital, labour and maintenance costs.Accordingly, since 1981, efforts have been directed towards the development of a cheap gold extraction process in terms of both capital and operating costs. The main criteria is to produce gold below US $200 per oz including all administration, mining and process stages. This paper describes such a process development for Cochrane Hill. LOCATION AND HISTORY OF THE PROPERTYThe Cochrane Hill property is located about 8 miles North of Sherbrooke, N.S. on highway No. 7. Sherbrooke is about 180 miles east of Halifax. Gold was originally discovered at Cochrane Hill in the 1860's. Early work consisted of trenching. In the 1930's a small shaft was sunk to about 80 feet and some tonnage treated using a stamp mill with gravity concentration of gold.Northumberland Mines Ltd. acquired a 70% interest in the property in 1977. Subsequent drilling indicated a potential zone of gold mineralization with a drill-indicated tonnage of one million tons having a grade of 0.07 ounces per ton of gold (all high assays cut to 1 oz) down to a depth of 300 feet recoverable by open pit mining methods. In broad terms, the goldbearing zone is about 50 feet wide and 800 feet long and dips at about 70°."

A DISCUSSION is presented of natural gas production and field processing equipment as now utilized in the gas producing areas of the United States, with reference to use of such equipment in Canadian gas areas. The scope of the paper is confined to a general description of various types and methods of using surface production equipment. The discussion is divided under two general groups: well-head production equipment, and field processing. The first will be concerned primarily with indirect heaters, separators, knockouts, and special versions of this equipment. The second major group includes the field processing equipment for handling natural gas. A delineation should be made here as to the meaning of field processing as used in this discussion. We will limit our term to mean such processing equipment as may be used in producing fields to process gas or its by products in a manner that does not require conventional plant practices either in operation or supervision. This covers such equipment as is necessary to complete preparation of gas for sale to pipeline and/ or is necessary to recover valuable components. Under this heading we will discuss glycol dehydration, solid desiccant dehydration, low-temperature separation, mechanical refrigeration, and desorbtion-stabilization. These are all processes involved in preparing gas for final sale or disposal. They do not include the more conventional and large-scale plant process systems.

"INTRODUCTION Extensive studies have been carried on pure gold to determine the various factors that affect its dissolution in alkaline cyanide solutions. With the extension of milling to refractory ores more intensive investigations on the effect of impurities in the ore on the dissolution kinetics are needed. The present work describes experiments carried on refractory flotation tailings with the object to determine how the recovery of gold could be increased. The effect of arsenic and antimony in the ore and the excessive use of lime are discussed. Control of cyanide losses is also dealt with.MECHANISM OF THE GOLD DISSOLUTION REACTION In aqueous cyanide solutions, gold is believed to be dissolved by one of the following reactions:4Au + 8NaCN + O2 + 2H20 = 4NaAu (CN)2 + 4NaOH (1)2Au + 4NaCN + 2 + 2H20 = 2NaAu (CN)2 + 2NaOH + H202 (2)2Au + 4NaCN + H202 = 2NaAu (CN)2 + 2NaOH (3) The first of these, known as the Elsner Equation is supported by )4 3,2,1(several authors while others(5,6) support reactions 2 and 3 known as the Bodlander Equations. "The developing world energy crisis and spiraling fuel costs have created a new public awareness and general acceptance of the need for energy conservation.Plants will have different objectives for an energy conservation program but there appears to be a common approach on how to save electrical energy.Data for a 180tph Rod Mill powered by a 750 hp motor will be used to demonstrate the relationship of energy input and production levels and to seek an optimum operating condition.Energy Conservation:Plants that have examined ways of dealing with the energy situations have concluded that energy conservation has important benefits for industry, including reduced costs, fewer production slowdowns inthe event of fuel shortages and a continued competitive position.There have been some ""startling"" conservation achievements attained through such simple plant maintenance and operating practices as reducing unnecessary lighting in buildings and yards, turning off' equipment not needed at night or over week-ends, through planning maintenance and production schedules to minimize energy use and through improving quality control to eliminate waste.Significant reducti.ons in energy use have been achieved by some rather simple but vigorous maintenance and plant engineering efforts directed at finding and fixing energy ""leaks"" rather than technological advances or major rework or redesign of facilities and equipment.An Energy Conservation Program often must overcome such obstacles as historic operating practices and emp1-oyee indifference, i.e. the ris.ing costs of fuel should result in re-examination of so1ne basic attitudes to energy conservation. "Tintaya’s basic production line is copper concentrate, which has an important gold content. The process used is flotation; the objective of the metallurgical department is to obtain the best results in the copper recovery without neglecting the gold, using very specific reagents. Copper recoveries are considered high, nevertheless every day emphasis is placed upon increasing those recoveries. Regarding gold, optimum recoveries could not be achieved with flotation; and implementation of a gravity circuit was considered.According to microscopy studies, the coarse and very fine grains of gold in native form are lost to tails. The native gold due to its high specific gravity is concentrated at the underflow of the cyclone, remaining in the circulating load of the circuit. It reaches three times the concentration compared to the head grade entering the ball mills. This re-circulation generates very fine and laminated gold particles inside the ball mill, passing to the classification stage making a short circuit to the overflow of the cyclone.The very coarse gold particles as well as the thick flakes of gold do not react favorably to the conventional flotation process; thus studies that have included gravity separation have been conducted to increase the gold recovery. Part of the research included concentrating tables, jigs, and Knelson Concentrators. The Knelson Concentrator proved to be the best selection in terms of metallurgical performance and recoveries considering the throughput and operation conditions of the Tintaya Plant.The gravity concentration circuit with the Knelson Concentrator was commissioned in BHP Tintaya in October 1998, as per the flowsheet shown later on. Presently the global gold production surpasses any estimated expectations.Present efforts are directed towards showing the evaluation and optimization of the different parameters that govern the performance of the Knelson concentrator, as well as illustrating the difficulties and successes throughout the operating period.In the first year of operation 200 tons of gold concentrate have been produced with an average concentrate grade of 320 gramdton, having paid back in full the cost of the automated KC-XD- 48 Knelson Concentrator, the peripheral equipment, and the cost of the installation."

Due to difficulties associated with gripping in direct tension, indirect methods are commonly used to measure rock tensile strength. In this work, we adopt an innovative indirect tensile test method: Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) to measure the tensile/flexural strength of Laurentian granite (LG). The static tests are carried out with a servo-controlled material testing machine and the dynamic tests are conduced with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. Pulse shaping technique is adopted to achieve dynamic force equilibrium in SHPB to facilitate data regression. Finite element method is used to relate the failure load to the tensile strength. Strong rate dependence of the tensile strength is observed. The flexural strength is higher than the tensile strength measured using Brazilian Disc (BD). This difference is rationalized using the non-local theory. To further validate the method, a coupled Finite element/Discrete element method (Fem/Dem) in conjunction with the smeared crack model is utilized to simulate the fracture process during dynamic SCB tests. The resulting fracture patterns are qualitatively consistent with those from recovered samples. Both the experimental and numerical methods have validated the results and this new method is readily to be used for other rocks and other brittle materials.

"North American Palladium commissioned the new concentrator at the Lac des Iles mine in the summer of 2001. The 15,000 tonnes per day mill replaced the existing 2,400 tonnes per day facility, as part of a major mine expansion.At Lac des Iles, the grain size distribution of the platinum group minerals (PGM) is bi-modal. Roughly two-thirds of the PGM are relatively coarse-grained, and often associated with fast floating copper and nickel sulphides. The remainder is ultra-fine, and locked in silicates, which poses a special challenge to the metallurgist. The previous mill typically recovered just the fast-floating mineralisation, but to achieve target recoveries, the new mill has to recover a substantial amount of the ultra-fine PGM. The metallurgical challenges associated with the recovery of fine-grained PGM in the talcous Lac des Iles ores, are described.The paper describes the approach used in circuit optimisation, and how metallurgical and operational optimisation raised palladium recoveries by more than 6% in six months, by tuning the circuit to recover some of the ultra-fine PGM mineralisation.BACKGROUNDThe Lac des Iles mine, owned and operated by North American Palladium Limited, is located about 115 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The mine originally opened in December 1993, and prior to 2001 included a mill capable of handling 2,400 tonnes per day of ore delivered from the nearby Roby pit.Following an intensive exploration programme conducted in 1999, and a detailed feasibility study, conducted in 2000, North American Palladium initiated a mine expansion project, the objective being to expand milling throughput from 2,400 tonnes per day to 15,000 tonnes per day. This required construction of an entirely new mill, which was commissioned in May 2001."

"Xanthate is a sulfide collector that has been widely used in flotation for almost a century. It is inexpensive, easy to synthesize and apply, and produces good metallurgy in the right applications. However, a major drawback of xanthate is that it decomposes easily and generates CS2 gas in transportation, storage and operation, which can be harmful to human health. Also, excessive xanthate in tailings pond leads to toxicity of the process water and potential damages to aqua-life systems. New regulations in Ontario require that the TWA (time-weighted-average) value of CS2 in the work place is below 1 ppm, which is 1/10 of the previous limit. The stringent regulation may eventually sweep other regions of Canada with the increased awareness of healthy working conditions and environment protection. Therefore, it becomes very important to find xanthate replacements which will be “green”, i.e., environmentally friendly.In this research work, a systematic procedure is used for collector evaluation using the Sudbury nickel sulfide ores from Vale’s Ontario operations, starting with the collector properties (MSDS) evaluation, followed by batch flotation tests, miniplant tests, plant trials and economic evaluation. It is found that the most promising xanthate replacement is dithiocarbamate.INTRODUCTIONSulfide mineral flotation has been practiced since the early 20th century. Its industrial importance is well recognized as mineral concentrates from flotation can be economically smelted and refined to provide primary metals. Collectors play a vital role in froth flotation. There are reagents possessing both a polar group that binds them to the mineral surface and a nonpolar group that is oriented away from the surface to attach air bubbles. The introduction of xanthate as a sulfide collector in 1925 was a remarkable development in froth flotation (Keller, 1925). It is low cost, easy to synthesize, water soluble, simple to control in application. Most importantly, it has strong capability and usually good selectivity for sulfide mineral flotation, which have been keeping its application prominent for almost a century."

The QCM Mount-Wright mine and concentrator complex produces about 14 M tonnes of iron concentrate annually. Approximately 9.5 M tonnes of this concentrate are used to produce iron ore pellets at four different silica grades: Three for blast furnace operations and one for direct reduction furnaces. The paper presents the scientific approach that led to the realization of two projects where the acquisition of new process equipment led to an improved pellet plant iron recovery, a better flexibility and to lower operating costs as well as to the production of fine iron ore concentrate from the Port-Cartier tailings pond. Typical 4.8 % SiO2 concentrate is processed to achieve required pellet silica content. This is obtained with the aid of hindered settlers or hydraulic classifiers, screens, whims and, lately, spirals. The increasing demand for low silica iron ore products resulted in a greater need for upgrading. The Pellet Plant upgrading capacity being limited, more and more iron units were lost. Base on test works results and economic evaluations, QCM engineers figured out a way to increase efficiently their upgrading plant capacity and go back in the pond gather what has been lost in recent years of operation.

In the present paper, numerical simulations based on a finite/discrete element approach are used to study deformation and failure process during standard rock mechanics. FEM/DEM modeling has been used as available with the ELFEN code, which explicitly model the transition from continuum to discontinuum. The transition is simulated through a crack nucleation and propagation that obeys to the Griffith?s failure criterion. If the fracture criterion within the intact rock (represented by FEM) is met, a new crack (represented by DEM) is initiated. Remeshing allows the fracture process through the FEM mesh to be tracked and visualized, thus contact properties can be assigned to pre-existing fractures and newly generated fractures. In this study, compressive tests of rock samples are simulated. The applicability of ELFEN to properly and efficiently simulate typical laboratory rock mechanics tests, with reference to the rock fracture process, is described in detail. In addition, an indirect validation of the extensional strain criterion proposed by Stacey (1981) is given.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Concentrator is located 28 kilometers east of the city of Timmins, Ontario. Two types of ore are treated; 'A' type, a copper-zinc-low silver ore producing copper and zinc concentrates, and 'C' type, a copper-lead-zinc-high silver ore producing copper, lead and zinc concentrates.The ore is processed at a combined rate of 12,400 metric tonnes per day through four parallel grinding and flotation divisions. Three divisions treat the 'A' type ore and the fourth treats the 'C' ore. Each division is fed from its own fine ore bin.This paper reviews the grinding section with specific emphasis on grinding media consumption and the factors affecting it as related to 'A' type ore. At Kidd Creek there was an awareness that grinding media consumption varied on a weekly and monthly basis. The reasons for this variation was usually attributed to ore hardness as evidenced by short term variations in the circuit feedrate and head assays. However, there has been a diversity of opinion published in recent years regarding the factors contributing to steel consumption. This initiated a study of historical Kidd Creek operating data, from the period 1970 to 1986 inclusive, to determine the effect of various operating parameters on media consumption. The results of the study could then be used as a baseline for future media consumption testwork."

"A case study for the application of a novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of a narrow steeply dipping, gold-silver mineralized quartz vein deposit is presented. The technique is novel in two respects. First, mineral grades are kriged directly rather via the accumulation method more often applied to vein deposits and, second, a modified 2D ordinary kriging algorithm is used that allows the calculation of a single grade and variance for irregular shaped blocks of varying sizes. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the suitability of this novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of the Poura mine deposit and, if appropriate, to lay a firm foundation for future geostatistical work at the mine.The reserve estimation concentrated on the remnant ore blocks and pillars in both underground and surface workings. The data, which was collected in 2D coordinates with grade and vein thickness values, was first analyzed statistically and used to compute experimental semi-variograms. Appropriate semivariogram models were fitted and various aspects of the estimation technique were evaluated using cross-validation error analysis, with acceptable results. A block kriging computer program called Krige2D was developed to implement the modified 2D kriging algorithm and calculations. Production data were not available to evaluate the computed block resources, but they were compared with a previous resource data determined using an arithmetic approach. The geostatistical technique estimated slightly higher grades but lower overall tonnages as compared to the earlier arithmetic estimates."

"A process is proposed for the treatment of phosphate rock for the recovery of uranium and the lanthanides. The process assures the production of phosphatic fertilizers without polluting the environment with radioactive material.IntroductionWhile many processes for uranium recovery from phosphoric acid produced by the H2S04 route are known and utilised commercially, little is known about uranium recovery from phosphoric acid produced by the HN03 route1. Advantages of the latter route are both the elimination of the gypsum disposal problem, and the possibility of radium disposal in a controlled way2. Further, the lanthanides originally present in the rock can be recovered if the nitric acid route is used; they will be mostly lost in the gypsum produced by the sulphuric acid route3. In the present work a scheme for the recovery of uranium and the lanthanides from phosphate rock without interfering with the normal route for fertiliser production is proposed using HN03 as a leaching agent. Attention was also given to uranium decay products and their separation so that they might not contaminate the fertiliser4. Further, an attempt was made to defluorinate the leach solution in order to upgrade the fertiliser and at the same time recover the fluorine5. Rapid analytical methods for the determination of uranium, radium, and lanthanides in phosphate rock were developed6,7."

"1. Introduction Mattagami Lake Mines and Orchan Mines operate zinc copper mines adjacent to one another near Matagami, Quebec, situated approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Rouyn-Noranda. (Note: Mattagami Lake and Orchan are in the process of being absorbed by Noranda Mines and will become Noranda Mines-Matagami Division). Both concentrators began operations in late 1963.The Mattagami Lake concentrator is capable of treating up to 3,500 metric tons per day of massive sulphide ore with a mineral composition shown in TABLE 1. The Orchan concentrator consists of two separate circuits - the Orchan circuit with a capacity of 1,050 metric tons per day and a custom circuit with a capacity of 825 metric tons per day. Throughout its operation, Orchan has custom milled ore from several smaller deposits in the Matagami district."
