"Microflotation, laboratory batch, and in-plant minicell continuous tests were conducted to determine if copper ions not only activate sphalerite but also depress pyrite when the minerals are together. Microflotation tests showed that pyrite recovery increased with addition of copper ions in the pH range of 5-10 when alone, but decreased when sphalerite was also present. Batch flotation tests (Red Dog ore) showed that upon addition of copper, pyrite recovery decreased significantly. The continuous tests (Louvicourt Mine) confirmed this and indicated that with excess copper pyrite recovery can increase. The results suggest there is competition for copper and xanthate in favour of sphalerite. To take advantage of this competition it may be necessary to control the sequence and rate of copper, collector, and lime addition. INTRODUCTIONFlotation, in common with all physical separations, is an imperfect process that results in misplacement of minerals. One source of this imperfection is accidental activation by contaminating metal ions. An important practical example is the misplacement of pyrite to zinc concentrates. Flotation of sphalerite generally requires activation by copper ions, added as copper sulphate. Copper ions are also used to activate pyrite [l] hence there is the suspicion that accidental activation contributes to the recovery of pyrite (Py) with the sphalerite (Sp). However, recent literature has shown that copper ions may make Py less floatable if Sp is also present. Xu et al. [2] conducted continuous minicell tests in-plant at Kidd Creek Operations (division of Falconbridge Ltd.) and showed that while the addition of copper sulphate improved zinc/iron selectivity, it did so as much by reducing the recovery of pyrite as increasing zinc recovery (Figure 1)."

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. INTRODUCTION The work described in the following paper was under-taken with a view to determining, if possible, the relative importance of some of the phenomena on which flotation seems to depend, in the hope that, if this information could be obtained, it would be of value in dealing with the problem as a whole. At the outset, brief reference will be made to three papers which had a considerable bearing on the course followed in the present investigation. In 1919, Langmuir, in a paper on 'The Mechanism of the Surface Phenomena of Flotation', showed that mono-molecular films of very great stability could be produced on solid surfaces with oleic acid, but that pure paraffin oil, though spreading readily on a dean dry surface, was easily displaced by water.

"High tirerim loading on haul trucks operating on rough ground frequently manifests as mechanical separations and rim base cracking caused by cyclic fatigue. This paper provides an understanding of the impact of high loads on rim component life and tire footprint, bulge, and deformation behaviour; and develops a maintenance planning tool to predict strain implications of high g loading for a given rim location. Loading tests and analyses were conducted for a tirerim arrangement under increasing load and internal tire pressure. For example, for many years oil sand mining operations have expressed qualitative beliefs that an impact load of the magnitude experienced by a rim and tire arrangement is not detrimental to a rim as a stiff component; however, mining equipment components are subjected to cyclic loading where failure can result from repeated load/unload activity, truncating the peak region of a stress–strain response and resulting in fatigue failure at a stress value that is less than the peak value. The outcome reported by oil sand haul truck maintenance groups indicates they have realized that most high g impacts—such as those experienced by hauler tires and rims operating on poor ground conditions—can result in failure due to cyclic loading, where higher loads require fewer cycles for failure. This high-level loading and the resulting strain transmitted to the rim is evident in the results of the laboratory testing presented in this paper."

ABSTRACT In a nickel smelting process, large amounts of off-gas emissions are generated, which can cause serious environmental and plant hygiene problems if not properly treated. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations, an enhanced understanding of well-controlled, off-gas cleaning systems is vital. In this paper, dynamic models for an industrial smelter, off-gas system tackling hazardous sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide are developed using mass continuity, momentum, and energy conservation laws. The effect of air in-leakage is explored under different operating conditions. The developed models provide an enhanced process understanding and a necessary basis for highperformance control analysis of smelter off-gas systems.

"Sampling in the mineral processing industry has always been a subject which has received considerable discussion. There have been many volumes written on theory, techniques and practical application of sampling. However, until recently, the companies were not completely aware of the potential savings available with properly designed sampling systems both to assist in pieces: control and final product values.Definition In our discussion today, we will define sampling as the operation of removing a part, convenient in quantity for analysis, from a whole, which is of much greater hulk, and removing it in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested, i.e. size of particle, moisture content, specific gravity content, mineral and chemical composition, are the same in both the sample and the whole.Application It has been well established that undetected errors can result in large economic losses, thus most firms depend upon some type of sampling and sample analysis as a control in their continuous processing of materials. Despite the large investment in facilities and personnel the ""analysis"" of a sample can be no more accurate or reliable than the sample on which it is being based. The importance of sampling is recognized by a great many but it is appreciated by only a few, largely because it is sometimes one of the items which is taken for granted."

"In a previous publication, the depressant action of Mg above pH 10 on Cu-activated sphalerite was described (Lascelles et al., 2001). In the present communication, a second role, aggregation is introduced.Aggregation (i.e., the tendency of particles to cluster) is measured using settling rate and turbidity converted to an aggregation index (AI) where 0 corresponds to dispersed and 1 to aggregated. Surveys of Cu and Zn flotation stages at four concentrators showed the A1 increased significantly above pH 9. The metal ions identified in the process waters, principally Ca and Mg, were tested to determine which might be responsible. The presence of Mg was found to be the most important, 50 ppm Mg having a greater impact than 500 ppm Ca fkom pH 9 to 1 1. In one plant, poor repeatability in A1 was suspected to be related to varying Mg levels; doping with Mg significantly increased AI.In both aggregation and depression, therefore, the common feature is the impact of Mg at pH > 9. Over this pH range Mg forms a range of hydroxy species, including Mg(OH)2 precipitates. Suggested aggregation and depression mechanisms associated with these precipitates are introduced. Possible problems and opportunities arising from the findings are discussed.INTRODUCTIONProcess waters in flotation circuits contain a variety of metal ions that may introduce unwanted activation or depression. Two common metal ions are calcium and magnesium. The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto inorganic supports and amorphous carbon rest on well consolidated technologies belonging to the realm of industrial catalysis and of basic catalysis research (1). In spite of the existence of a variety of specific synthetic strategies, their very rationale relies on three main approaches i. e.: A: precursors of both the metal nanoparticles and of the relevant supports (or the support itself) are intimately mixed (even let to react) at ambient conditions and then thermo-reduced according to very controlled protocols (2); B: precursors of metal nanoclusters are let to be adsorbed onto suitable supports from the gas or liquid phase and subsequently thermally decomposed (3); C: metastable size-controlled metal nanoclusters are previously generated in a liquid medium and subsequently transferred onto pre-formed support particles (4). The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto organic soluble supports is also a rather well documented academic praxis (5, 6, 7, 8) able to provide e.g. size-controlled Au0 nanoclusters of 4.4±1.7 nm (5). Our group started in 1997 developing (9) an innovative approach to the synthesis of metal nanoclusters dispersed inside insoluble, albeit accessible (see below) mechanically robust gel-type resins (10), which procedure was tested so far on palladium metal. Metal ions are previously dispersed upon ion-exchange inside of the polymer framework, followed by chemical reduction and by the aggregation of born metal atoms into nanoclusters, the size of which is templated (11, 12) by the three-dimensional intercommunicating meshes that build up the overall polymer framework (Figure 1).

"Twenty-five years ago, there were about thirty-two gold mines operating in Canada; nine of these have been in continuous operation since then and are still operating. Three of these are part of the Dome Group. Operations of these three and of the newer mines in the Group are referred to in discussing process development over the last twenty-five years.Of the Dome Mines Group, Dome Mines Limited, Sigma Mines (Quebec) Limited, Campbell Red Lake Mines Limited, Detour Lake Mine and Kiena Gold Mines Limited, three have been in continuous operation for the last twenty-five years. Dome has operated for seventy-seven years; Sigma about to complete fifty years, and Campbell approaching forty. Overall, milling processes are virtually the same as they were twenty-five years ago. Tota1 go1d production from the three mines has hardly changed; 1960 production, 416,700 ozs. versus 411,300 in 1985. Milling costs have risen by a factor of six or seven and gold price from $35/oz. in 1960 to $322 in 1985.Basic flowsheets are relatively unchanged. Sigma is an all cyanidation mill grinding in cyanide solution; Dome operates gravity concentration and cyanidation; Campbell gravity concentration, flotation, roasting and cyanidation. All three use Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation.Detour and Kiena are two examples of the major change in gold processing in the last twenty-five years - carbon-in-pulp. This process has brought along with it other changes, such as, carbon stripping and reactivation, electrowinning, and induction furnace melting. Modern mill design with its use of outside thickeners and agitators, bulk handling of reagents, instrumentation, etc., has made a radical change in operating conditions and appearance of the new plants."

"SUMMARYWaste management in general, and the water treatment of mine and mill effluents, has become an ever increasing burden for mining operations. A reduction in these expenditures would undoubtedly be desirable if this could in fact be achieved within effluent guidelines and monitoring requirements.A brief summary is presented of the research which has as its aim the development of methods which would reduce such costs and lead to solutions for environmentally acceptable close-out conditions for acid generating mine waters. The basic concepts of Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing are presented, together with an indication of the present state of these research efforts. Details are provided of the progress of various experiments which aim to promote reducing conditions, organic matter production and the establishment of biological filters which remove metals from the water which are then retained within the waste management areas. These conditions should lead to a curtailment of acid drainage and an improvement in effluent quality.A description is provided of the first pilot demonstration using this approach to achieve a walk-away condition for the close-out of a massive sulphide tailings resulting from 10 years of operating a copper/zinc concentrator in Northern Ontario.1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Waste management and close-outIt is recognized that the achievement of a cost-effective and competitive mining operation, from the commencement of exploration for ore bodies through to the day-to-day efficient operation of the mine, requires a certain expertise and sophistication. "Global niobium production is currently dominated by three operating mines, Araxá and Catalão in Brazil, and Niobec in Canada. Although over 90% of the world’s niobium is mined and processed in Brazil, a number of high grade niobium deposits exist worldwide. The advancement of these deposits depends largely on the development of operable beneficiation flowsheets. Pyrochlore, the primary niobium bearing mineral, is typically upgraded by flotation with amine collectors at acidic pH, and often includes a reverse gangue flotation stage prior to pyrochlore flotation. Challenges related to the flotation of niobium ores include complicated flowsheets which require pulp pH adjustment from alkaline to highly acidic conditions, difficulty recovering fine grained pyrochlore, producing concentrates that meet specifications, and minimizing the losses to reverse pre-flotation gangue concentrates, slimes, and tailings. The specific flotation challenges associated with different niobium ores are discussed. In some cases, the use of alternate flotation reagents and flowsheets are required to achieve reasonable gangue rejection and maximize recovery, particularly of very fine pyrochlore grains.INTRODUCTIONNiobium is a transition metal primarily found in the oxide minerals pyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) and columbite (Fe,Mn)Nb2O6. After physical upgrading, pyrochlore is converted into a ferroniobium product which is largely used in the production of high strength low-alloy steel. Today’s niobium market is dominated by the Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineração, whose Araxá operation produces over 80% of the world’s niobium. There are two smaller operations, Niobec in Canada, and Catalão in Brazil, which account for the remaining production (U.S. Geological Survey, 2013).A number of niobium deposits exist globally, their advancement dependent on the development of operable beneficiation flowsheets. Pyrochlore, the predominant niobium bearing mineral, is commonly upgraded by flotation with cationic amine collectors in acidic pulp conditions. However, many niobium ores do not respond to this typical flowsheet because they are either highly refractory or niobium deports to other minerals such as columbite, ilmenite and rutile, which are not as responsive to this reagent scheme (Bulatovic, 2010). Other reagents, such as alkyl hydroxamic acid, have been studied extensively and while promising, are not without their own inherent issues including lack of selectivity over iron oxide minerals, and high addition rates (Ni & Liu, 2012; Gorlovskii, Eropkiny, Koval, Strelstin, Khobotova, & Shtchukina, 1968; Gorlovskii, Khobatova, & Shtchukina, 1966).It is the aim of this report to highlight the challenges associated with the physical upgrading of niobium minerals through examination of the flotation behavior of two different ore systems. In order to overcome these challenges it is important to thoroughly understand the limitations of typical flowsheets/reagent schemes currently employed in operation."

"Abstract - North American Palladium Ltd. operates its Lac des Iles open pit palladium mine 85 km north of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Roby Zone deposit occurs within the mafic/ultramafic Lac des Iles Intrusive Complex (LDI-IC), which was created by multiple pulses of magma of varying composition within several closely spaced chambers. Chaotic lithological distribution, the presence of magmatic breccias, and the rarity of rhythmic layering suggest a dynamic intrusive environment with disruptive magma pulses. As of December 31, 2001, measured and indicated resources for the 950 m long by 815 m wide Roby Zone deposit totalled 159 Mt grading 1.55 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt, 0.12 g/t Au, 0.05% Cu, and 0.05% Ni at a palladium cut-off grade of 0.7 g/t. The Roby Zone contains an additional 73 Mt of inferred resources at similar grades.The Roby Zone is dominated by varitextured gabbro containing pipes and pods of breccia, and large blocks (~60 m across) of varying lithology. Mineralization at Lac des Iles occurs as: (1) a PGEand base metal-rich magmatic matrix of breccia (breccia ore); (2) mineralized dikes or sills (gabbronorite in North Roby ore); (3) lower-grade mineralization in varitextured units that are host to the distinctive breccia ore and envelope the North Roby ore; and (4) high-grade mineralization associated with strong silicate alteration exemplified by high-grade ore.The close spatial association of the mineralized breccias with both varitextured units and silicate alteration leads to an interpretation that the energetic magma that created breccia was charged with a dissolved fluid, and that this deuteric fluid exsolved at high temperatures to migrate through crystal mush, enhancing crystallization along its pathways, resulting in variable grain size. This transformation occurred at high temperature and produced sulfide-poor, varitextured gabbro-hosted mineralization exemplified by some of the mineralization in the North Roby Zone, and also found throughout the Roby Zone. The association of hydrous silicate alteration with mineralization can be explained by continuing fluid migration during cooling and continued metal transport. La distribution chaotique des lithologies, la présence de brèches magmatiques, et la quasi-absence de litage rythmique suggèrent un environnement magmatique dynamique perturbé par l’introduction de nouveau magma. Au 31 décembre 2001, les ressources mesurées et indiquées s’élevaient à 159 millions de tonnes titrant 1,55 g/t Pd, 0,17 g/t Pt, 0,12 g/t Au, 0,05% Cu, et 0,05% Ni, pour une teneur de coupure de 0,7 g/t Pd. De plus, la Roby Zone contient 73 millions de tonnes de ressources inférées à une teneur similaire.La Roby Zone est principalement encaissée dans un gabbro de texture hétérogène (varitextured) caractérisé par des cheminées et des lentilles de brèches et des énormes blocs (environ 60 m de diamètre) de plusieurs lithologies. Au Lac des Iles, la minéralisation en EGP et en métaux de base se retrouve dans la matrice magmatique de brèches (breccia ore), dans des dykes ou des sills minéralisés (gabbronorite dans la zone North Roby ore), comme minerai de basse teneur encaissant le minerai de brèche (breccia ore) et enveloppant la zone North Roby. Du minerai de haute teneur est également associé avec une forte altération en silicates dans la zone high-grade ore.L’étroite association spatiale entre les brèches minéralisées et les unités de texture variée (varitextured) et l’altération en silicate suggère que le magma énergique qui a causé la bréchification était chargé de fluides. "The Sarcheshmeh mine processes 40,000 t/d of ore grading 0.9% Cu and 0.035% Mo. Grinding is effected in single stage ball mills using 80 mm forged steel balls, with an average consumption of 850 g/t. One of its 5 m diameter, 8 m length ball mills was emptied to measure the ball size distribution. The broken balls were first separated from the total charge, and the remaining balls classified into five size intervals of +7O mm, -70 +60 mm, -60+50 mm, -50+40 mm, -40 mm.The charge was composed of 280,534 balls (excluding broken balls) with a total mass of 305,180 kg. It was found that 4.0 % of the balls were broken; the size distribution of the charge was also markedly different from the desired one, in particular for the small-sized balls. For instance, 9% of the balls were expected to measure 2.54 to 3.18 cm in diameter, but none was found. On the other hand, the amount of top size balls was 30% higher than expected. The radial hardness of balls, which was determined by cutting the balls in halves, showed that the hardness sharply drops when the balls become smaller than 65 mm. The unexpected ball size distribution was attributed to the rapid change in the balls radial hardness. Based on the measured ball size distribution, a new ball make-up charge which uses 80% of 80 mm and 20% of 60 mm balls instead of 100% of 80 mm was proposed and implemented. The effect of the new ball make-up procedure in terms of ball consumption and grinding efficiency is being investigated."

"INTRODUCTION On February 1, 1962, after five years of exploration and research, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation announced that they would develop the Adams Mine. Plant construction began immediately and in December of 1964 the first shipment of pellets arrived at J & L's blast furnaces in Pittsburgh. J & L continued to operate the property through its wholly owned subsidiary, Jones & Laughlin Mining Company, Ltd., until August of 1971 when it was sold to Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited of Hamilton. Dofasco engaged Cliffs of Canada, a subsidiary of Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, to manage the operation of the property.SUMMARY:The Adams Mine is a one million tons per year iron ore pellet operation located in the Boston Township Iron Range, approximately seven miles southeast of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. The property includes 5,300 acres in which eight areas suitable for open pit mining have been outlined. It was estimated that the reserves in these out lined areas are sufficient to produce 30 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets.The ore 'consists of fine grained magnetite with alternating layers of chert and is mined by conventional open pit methods. This extremely hard and abrasive ore averages about 20 percent magnetic iron, and has a ratio of concentration of 3. 9 /1. Presently, mining operations are confined to two pits with a third one being developed for operations to begin in 1973.The run-of-mine ore is crushed and ground and then concentrated by magnetic separation and flotation to a concentrate grade of 68 percent magnetic iron. The concentrate is agglomerated by a grate-kiln pelletizing process and shipped by rail to Dofasco's blast furnaces in Hamilton and to Jones & Laughlin's furnaces in Pittsburgh."

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant processing performance improvement project, with verifiable improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond using this equation. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study was undertaken with the metallurgical staff from two milling operations and process application specialists from a grinding media manufacturing company. “Task analysis” of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis identified the required steps, and ultimately yielded a “Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/ Improvement System.

For decades, the mining industry has been focussed to find an efficient and economically attractive process for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Jetti Resources has developed a novel hydrometallurgical alternative to extract metals of value from mineral ores that the mining industry has struggled to process. Jetti’s catalytic technology, whilst being especially advantaged for extracting copper from low-grade and highly refractory minerals, such as chalcopyrite, seamlessly integrates with existing heap leaching methods and downstream processing operations. The technology uses a catalyst which weakens the metal-sulfide bond in the crystalline structure of the chalcopyrite mineral and alters the structure of the passivation layer allowing the leaching process to continue. Metallurgical test work was conducted to examine the effect of ore variability, in terms of grade and copper deportment. The results presented in this study highlight the amenability of the technology and demonstrate that it is possible to enhance leaching performance of copper primary sulfides over a wide range of copper grades, from 0.1 to 2.2%. Further, it is concluded that despite the copper grade, the tests with increasing chalcopyrite content render copper recoveries up to 4 times higher compared to the tests under non-catalyzed conditions. Jetti’s catalytic technology is currently being evaluated at larger scales, namely a commercial dump leach operation and 50-tonne crib tests. The results obtained thus far are compared to the results from conventional sulfide heap leaching tests. INTRODUCTION For decades, the mining industry has been focussed to find an efficient and economically attractive process for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most abundant and recalcitrant of the copper sulfides (Singer, 2017). Owing to its abundance and economic importance, it is the most demandable natural source for copper worldwide. In fact, the projected demand for copper is further expected to rise much higher beyond the current demand by the year 2020 (Panda et al., 2015). Therefore, it becomes imperative to find low intensity hydrometallurgical technologies for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite in ores of such low-grades that are un-economic to concentrate and to augment the supply by extracting copper from ores with complex mineralogy that cannot be concentrated (Watling, 2013).

The hope is expressed, however, that the paper will be of additional assistance, and of particular help in introducing sound maintenance principles to those who are moving into this field of operation for the first time.Hoist RopesWITH a multi-rope friction winder system, structural upset within the hoist rope's cross section can occur if the ropes slip in the drum treads. This upset will usually appear at either end of the rope at the tangent point of the drum or deflection sheave with the respective conveyance in the normal uppermost position. This slipping action on the drum causes the outer cover of a Full Locked Coil or the strands of a stranded rope to shift, leading to structural upset. The result very often means that the ropes have to be withdrawn from service before completing their maximum service potential.The cause of any rope slipping in its tread can be associated with a discrepancy in tension of that rope between one side of the drum and the other."

Since addressing the Institute a year ago on The Future of the Copper Industry (l), many things have happened, most of them bad. It has been a hard year for profits and prophets. It was, therefore, with consider-able perturbation that I accepted the gracious invitation of your Committee to reappear. On reviewing my remarks of a year ago, I. have wondered whether, under pressure of more important matters, the Committee had neglected to make a note of them, or whether they felt that further explanations from me were in order. In either event, I am glad that I am here and welcome the opportunity to make any contribution I can to a clearer understanding of the problems of copper to those concerned. The English-speaking nations own 80 per cent of the present world-production of the metal. Col. P. E. Barbour, Secretary of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and I recently completed an estimate of the known world resources of copper. We placed the figure, in round numbers, at 100,000,000 tons of metal. Of this amount, about one-third lies in the United States, one-third in the British Empire, and one-third in South America; and all but 4 per cent of this is owned by British Empire and United States capital. Our figures do not include any estimates for Russia, Japan, or Europe, on which there are no available data. It is true, consequently, that the British Empire and the United States are the ones concerned. It seems to me to be a matter of great importance to the world at large, and of even greater importance to those nations themselves, that the known sources of supply of this metal, so essential both in peace and war, rest so strongly in their hands. I cannot believe that in the long run they will neglect their responsibilities in the wise administration of these resources.
