In this paper, the scientific bases of creation of simulation modelling systems of excavator-truck-conveyor complex work are represented. During the simulation modelling process of big mining and transport systems work the strict and full account of an order and sequence of all operations of simulated process is carried out. Step-by-step fixing of mining and transport system elements condition - excavators in loading and unloading points, trucks, road section, unloading points in storage bin, crushers and conveyors is conducted. Work and idle time of system elements are considered. During modelling process the information characterising system work as a whole is collected. It allows us to establish qualitative and quantitative influence of each system element on the final results of its functioning and provides to estimate rationality of a particular organisation variant of mining and transport equipment interaction from technological positions. Simulation results are: economic and technological indicators of mining and transport complex functioning of the period for each subsystem, as well as on the road, the points of loading, unloading and reloading.

In panel caving in underground mines, it is essential to characterise and monitor the stress and stability state of production level pillars to ensure the extraction of the mineralised ore column and the safety of workers. Pilar Norte is a sector in the El Teniente mine that forms a pillar between the undercut fronts of the adjacent Esmeralda and Reservas Norte sectors. It exists in a high-stress environment, which may induce damage to the rock mass production pillars. Generally, numerical models are calibrated using observed damage in galleries. This procedure does not discriminate between the structural condition and/or the blasting damage effects. This paper proposes a technique that uses borehole cameras to measure stress-induced damage. This has the advantage of being at the intact rock scale, meaning that the effect of geological structures is negligible and the blasting damage factor is eliminated. Comprehensive geotechnical characterisation and tomography monitoring has been undertaken at Pilar Norte to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour of the production pillars. By combining analytical, empirical and numerical models, a correlation between the measured overbreak recorded by the borehole cameras and the stress level of the pillar was developed. It is not the primary object of this paper to treat with the scheme of prospecting in detail, but it is considered that a brief description of the broad lines is necessary so that the significance of the points to be discussed later may be appreciated.The finding of payable gold reefs on the Bendigo field resolves itself into a two-fold problem, firstly the location of quartz bodies, and secondly the location of gold shoots in such bodies. The country rock of the field has been folded and faulted, and the occurrence of known reefs is associated with the fold axes and the faulting. The "lines" of the field are the anticlinal axes, and practically all known reefs are at or near centre country. Very little work has been done on the synclines, which may have some potential value.Quartz has been introduced along the fracture systems, and gives rise to the three main types of reef met with on the field, namely, the "back," which is similar to a bedded quartz reef and is formed along a bedding plane fault; the "saddle," which forms at the crest of the anticline and has the typical shape from which it takes its name; and "spurs," which are irregular masses of quartz, making off reefs of the first two types.As the fracturing throughout the field is widespread and fairly intense, the first problem, that of finqing quartz, is comparatively simple, and any regular system of blocking out the ground will be productive of quartz bodies.*Field Superintendent, Bendigo Mines Ltd. The flolation behaviour of some Australian uranium ores was investigated. Although uraninite and pitchblend float readily with fatty acids, selective concentration to produce an economically discardable tailing has not yet been achieved. This is attributed to the presence in the ores of a quantity of uranium mineral in finely dispersed form which is very difficult to liberate. For some of the ores, at least, the proportion of this material decreases with increase in head assay.Flotation may be a useful concentrating method for some Australian ores if uranium oxide is to be sold in a free competitive market.

Acid producing potential static tests have been undertaken on sample lithologies from New Zealand coal mines, to rank the lithogies into acid producing waste rock and stable non-acid producing waste rock. Results indicated that the main acid producing waste rock in the Waikato coal region are the marine Whaingaroa siltstone and the Glen Massey formations and the main alkaline producing lithologies were the Tauranga group volcanic-derived sediments (A & D) and the Mesozoic basement. Coal ash analysis of 28 samples from 28 mines have also been analysed for reactive S percentage and their base potential has been quantified by the chemical index of alteration (CIA). The results provide mine management in the Waikato Coal region with a classification of problematic and stable waste rock types. XRF and CIA values determined from wash drill cuttings would provide a method of determining waste rock volumes and magnitude of palaeo-weathering underground.

Main geochemical problems concerning the environment and mining industry interrelation are connected with the transformation of natural water chemistry by mining wastes. The investigation of many mines in Primorye, the southern part of the Russian Far East, showed that their mining waters have high concentrations of heavy metals and aluminium. Water acidity is primarily connected with the amount of acid-forming sulphide minerals in ores and also depends on the neutralising capacity of rocks. Considerable quantity of metals occur in the waters in dissolved form. Metal concentrations in mining waters exceeds the natural levels by two to five orders of magnitude and can't be reduced to the background levels even after multiple dilution. It is necessary to develop and put into practice new technologies so that to reduce the geochemical impact upon the environment.

The Oblaga Cu-Au skarn deposit and porphyry prospect is located in the south-eastern edge of the Gobi Desert in western Inner Mongolia. The deposit occurs within metamorphosed middle Paleozoic volcanic, plutonic and sedimentary rocks.   Ivanhoe geologists recognise eight main rock types in the area. Calcareous sediments include conglomerate, interlayered siltstone-sandstone, and limestone. Covering the calcareous sediments is a slab of thrusted biotite granite, and above it is rhyodacitic lithic tuff which, in places, is overlain by alluvial sediments. Various plutonic rocks and related intrusion breccias have intruded these units. Monzodiorite, quartz-monzonite and monzonite tend to form thin, high-angle intrusions and the youngest andesitic intrusions are generally wider and subhorizontal.   The Oblaga Cu-Au skarn, which occurs in the calcareous sediments, shows typical prograde and retrograde mineralogy. Petrographic studies show that prograde skarn minerals have been overprinted by retrograde skarn minerals, and original host rock minerals have been texturally obliterated and completely replaced. The mineralogy of the Oblaga skarn deposit is very similar to other Cu-Au skarn deposits worldwide.   Sericitic and minor chloritic alteration occurs throughout the study area and may relate to porphyry-style mineralisation. Generally, this alteration is not intense and most rocks have retained their original texture. Geochemical analyses suggest that K-metasomatism is not widespread at Oblaga. XRD analyses suggest an upward and outward transition from sericitic to chloritic alteration.   Comparisons between Oblaga and other porphyry Cu-Au deposits worldwide show that Oblaga has very similar characteristics to deposits that have undergone sericitic alteration. However, Oblaga is special because it also has relatively intense chloritic alteration, which is uncommon in other porphyry Cu deposits described in the literature.

Mine water management is often an afterthought in mine planning processes and can introduce significant risks to projects when studied as a stand alone component at a later stage in the mine design. Incorporation of a mine dewatering and pore pressure dissipation strategy in the early stages of mine planning is imperative in order to minimise constraints on the production schedule, to match designed pit slopes and maximise project value for an open cut mine option such as Olympic Dam. A risk-based mine planning approach was adopted during the project selection phase study whereby water management was introduced into mine planning, scheduling and the development of an operational strategy. Hydrological and hydrogeological studies and outputs were successfully integrated into the various iterations of the mine planning cycle during early selection phase to manage the potential water management risks associated with pit slope depressurisation and access to dry working conditions during rapid advancement of mining phases.An extensive network of vibrating wire piezometer sets and long-term depressurisation testing characterised aquifer conditions and demonstrated that hydraulic connectivity exists within the geological profile due to the presence of structures and resource drill holes which enhance vertical connectivity. This connectivity, along with underdrainage from mining activities contributes up to 100 m of depressurisation in low permeability units.A pit dewatering strategy incorporates the mine planning schedules and accounts for operational constraints as to the location and development of the dewatering wells, storages and pipelines. Numerical modelling generated a range of likely pit inflows and dewatering requirements with the average initial dewatering discharge likely to be 150 L/s and reduce quickly to 50 L/s after five years, depending on the premine schedule.Coupled hydrogeological and geotechnical assessments were also carried out as part of the mine planning cycle and indicate that successful dewatering will go a long way to reduce the pore pressures within key geotechnical units during the rapid mining phase where around 300 m of cover sequence is stripped in five years. However, the residual storage in the primary aquifer and the residual pore pressure in underlying low permeability units will need to be dissipated (in-pit horizontal holes) as the pit floor advances. Pit slope design angles are sensitive to depressurisation and dewatering and up to 70 per cent depressurisation of key geotechnical rock units are required. Whilst an accelerated program of aquifer dewatering supported by lithostatic unloading should drive rapid depressurisation in the lower permeability units, intervention is anticipated in key geotechnical units such as the Tregolana Shale and volcaniclastics. The extent of induced drainage will ultimately depend in part upon the mining rate and geotechnical stability requirements. Practical operability testing addressed the potential for operational constraints to mine depressurisation activities such as congestion and mining schedule development within the pit and identified that depressurisation drilling can be achieved even with reduced access availability. Mine operations and planning groups established design criteria and considered the likely inoperable periods following rainfall events of seven to 14 days to manage the base surge and minimise impact on production. In-pit surface water management options to minimise operational disruptions during and after significant rainfall events were estimated used a stochastic approach.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

Delivered at the University of Sydney, on June 4th, 1954.THE TORCH WE HOLDLast year Our Institute celebrated its Diamond Jubilee, coincident with the holding of the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurigcal Congress in Australia and New Zealand. We can be proud of our growth over the 61 years since the inaugural meeting in Adelaide in April, 1893, which followed suggestions from a provisional committee of mining men, formed in 1892 in Broken Hill.We can also be proud of our technical achievements in the fields of economic geology, mining and metallurgy.Should we be content with the growth of our mining and metallurgical industries over these years? My answer is in the negative. The discovery of new mineral deposits is essential for the continuance and development of the industries we represent.Let me review the background and trends of our industry in an attempt to emphasise the changing factors influencing the search for minerals and their exploitation.Australia was blessed with the discovery of coal in New South Wales in 1796; copper in South Australia at Kapunda, Burra, Wallaroo and Moonta in the eighteen-forties; gold in Victoria and Eastern Australia in the 'fifties; tin at Mount Bischoff, Tasmania, and gold at Charters Towers, Queensland, in the 'seventies; lead-silver at Broken Hill, New South Wales; gold and copper at Mount Morgan, Queensland, and copper at Mount Lyell, Tasmania, in the 'eighties; and gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and zinc-lead atRosebery, Tasmania, in the 'nineties. In order to be most effective in its application and availability, this information needs to be collected in programmes with defined objectives and deadlines. Applied Geology Associates have established a methodology to facilitate the structured collection of environmental data, which provides for the diverse needs of both engineering design and applications for statutory and non-statutory approvals. Principal aspects of this methodology are the scope, timing and management of the environmental studies within the overall project planning framework.

The concentrations of methane and coal dust vary from one location to another in underground coalmines. In the presence of an ignition source, such as static electricity, these mixtures can initiate explosions and consequently cause massive destruction. Research data can help in understanding the level of hazards and associated risk these flammable mixtures can produce. For instance, the level of peak explosion pressure and flame speed can be well understood from experimental and numerical research data. With this aim, methane–air mixtures and methane-coal dust-air mixtures were employed in a ducted spherical vessel. According to literature, the maximum value of peak explosion pressure can be obtained in vessels of spherical geometry when compared to vessels of other geometries. Thus the values of explosion parameters generated from spherical vessels can be incorporated in understanding the highest level of hazard that can occur in a real world scenario.In this study, the duct integrated with the vessel resembles any channel or pathway connected to a methane and/or coal dust rich area in the mine. Experimental investigations emphasise that the severity of explosion in the explosion zone transmits to the channel or pathway. The length of the channel or pathway also plays an important role on the values of explosion parameters. The greater the length of the channel or pathway, the higher the explosion pressure is and therefore the higher the destruction. Ignition energy and concentrations of methane and coal dust were varied in collecting experimental data. The countercurrent gas-solid heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temperature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assumptions, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating conditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which controls the strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char strength in the pilot plant in 1961 due to the performance of the drier and a prediction is made of a way in which the limitation could be overcome.

It is well accepted that the blast furnace will continue as the main route for iron-making for many more years. However, its limitations have motivated researchers to look for alternative routes, particularly, those where non-coking coal is used for liquid iron production. Smelting reduction (SR), where coal and oxygen are used to produce liquid iron and power is now receiving serious attention. Several smelting reduction reactors are now operating in pilot plant scale and one or two have reached commercial status.

Flotation has been in use at Broken Hill for nearly 100 years, and the process has gone through many different optimisation studies over that time. This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the Perilya Broken Hill Mine, and details one of the recent optimisation studies conducted using mathematical modelling and simulation tools. The optimisation study consisted of surveys of the lead and zinc circuits, mapping of the floatability components of the ore and developing models of the lead and zinc circuits. The models were then used to conduct simulations to simplify the circuit. The study allowed plant personnel to identify optimum operating conditions for their current flotation cells, as well as possible improvements in circuit configuration and cell capacity.

The assistance that can be gained by the use of aerial photographs in the geological examination of a mineral field is clearly illustrated by the results of a rapid reconnaissance survey of the newly-discovered Mount Fitton talc, deposits, situated in the north-eastern extension of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.The talc deposits were found to occur about the margins of a large lenticular mass of dolomitic marble, interbedded with hornfelsic tillites and fluvio-glacial sediments of Upper Pre-Cambrian age. Aerial photographs show clearly the extent of the dolomitic marble on which the growth of a species of eucalypt-Eucalyptus Gillei-is prominently developed, and which assists in defining the limits of this relatively light-coloured formation. (See Fig. 1).Upon field investigation it was found that the talc, deposits are related closely to the margin of the dolomitic marble where the latter has been subject to minor folding and faulting. The deposits themselves have been formed by metasomatic replacement of schistose dolomite. The contact of the dolomite with the underlying and overlying glacial beds is also noteworthy for the presence of minor occurrences of copper, silver, lead and zinc minerals.An examination of photographs covering a wide area reveals an outcrop of a massive granite to the north-east of the dolomitic marble, Fig. 2, which was almost certainly responsible for the regional metamorphism of the dolomitic and glacigene sediments, and the source of the mineralising solutions.All these features, as well as the broader structural features of the area, which are extremely important in the understanding of, individual commercial depQsits, were quickly determined with the assistance of the photographs.It is useful, briefly to relate the procedure adopted in examining this recently developed field as an example which may be well worth following on other fields, even if exposures are not so clearly defined. The method to be outlined, of course, will be of maximum advantage. Where rock exposures are good, where the ore bodies are likely to be widely spread, and where such bodies are related to some major geologi-cal control. Studies of the Main Seam in the Rapahoe Sector of Greymouth Coalfield have shown that the proportions of palynomorphs and palynomorph groups vary vertically within the seam, but remain laterally consistent. Subsequent examinations of other seams in the Rapahoe Sector have demonstrated that the changes in palynomorph proportions observed in the Main Seam are specific to that seam, effectively providing a seam 'fingerprint'. Such a characteristic signature may be used to identify the Main Seam where faulting or seam splitting confuses seam correlation between drillhole intersections. Palynomorph assemblages are derived from the original plants which formed the peat mire, and yield information on mire conditions such as climate, mineral matter input and chemistry. These depositional factors influence coal properties such as mineral content, volatile matter yields and coal breakability. Palynological data can therefore assist in development of depositional lTIodels for prediction of coal quality variations. Several other, thiner seams in the Rapahoe Sector have been demonstrated to also contain recognisable palynomorph assemblages, suggesting that other seams may also possess distinct palynomorph abundance profiles.

Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). Since 1954, much drilling, mapping, and quarrying has been done but there is no published report of this work.The rocks which constitute the Middleback Range, Camel Hill-Cooyerdoo line, Katunga Hill-Iron Knob, and Ash Range (Fig. 1) belong to the Middleback Group of Middle Precambrian or late Archaean age. In referring to two subjects of interest to the Members of this Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, I would at the outset desire to express our gratification that to-day we are able to welcome as now united with ourselves, those members who until recently constituted the New Zealand Institute. It is hoped that the amalgamation so amicably arranged may be productive of the best results to all concerned, incorporated as this combination has been at the moment of the fulfilment of that greater political union, the Australian Commonwealth.Since last Annual Meeting held in Brisbane, we have come under the same roof as the Chamber of Mines of Victoria, and we entertain the hope that as that Chamber and this Institute possess so many interests in common in the encouragement and advancement of mining and metallurgical progress in these colonies, that much mutual benefit will ensue. There are many directions in which each body can assist the other, and I trust that a friendly co-operation will be maintained.It is gratifying to feel that in all the colonies a distinct movement is being made to increase the facilities for education in Mining and Metallurgy but if I may refer to our colony of Victoria in particular, we have to express the profound regret that in the means of education in the higher branches, we occupy an inferior position, and it is quite certain that we will continue to do so unless the Government is prepared to subordinate provincial considerations to the weightier.
