A trial of an Adept Online Ore Sizer (OOS) was undertaken at the WMC Leinster Nickel Operation (LNO) in the first half of 2000. During this time the On Line Ore Sizer has been shown to be a robust and accurate instrument for measuring mill feed ore size. Data collected during the trial indicates significant variation in the F80 of the SAG mill feed. The effects of feed size on milling parameters such as mill weight, mill power draw and mill efficiency appears to be dependent on the ore blend treated. With some ore blends a weak positive correlation was found between ore size and mill weight and milling efficiency but with others no correlation is evident. It is believed that the OOS will become a vital piece of equipment in the future as LNO continues to optimises its milling circuit.

Conditional simulation is a branch of geo- statistics which allows the simulation of a mineral deposit so that predictions can be made about the variability of some particular parameter of the deposit. A summary of the general principles, advantages and limitations of conditional simulation is presented together with an example based on coal seam thickness.

This paper examines the use of the FrothSim flotation simulator to improve the performance of an industrial column flotation cell. The performance of an industrial retreat column cell is simulated, and, from the discrepancies between the simulated and experimental results, a problem with the wash water distribution is postulated. The scientific reason for the reduced performance with uneven wash water addition is described in detail. Further simulations indicated the potential for improvement with an even wash water distribution, resulting in both improved performance and reduced wash water usage. The simulated uneven wash water distribution was confirmed industrially, and the headers were redesigned and installed. A sampling campaign to compare the performance before and after the modifications showed that the flotation performance was improved dramatically, with a statistically significant decrease in gangue recovery, without a commensurate reduction in valuable mineral recovery.

Dewatering tailing slurries by mechanical means is often not possible and gravity and solar driven processes must be used. It has been shown previously that better use of gravity is achieved when the tailing is drained as it settles. Not only are more compact sediments obtained but also the dewatering is faster. From the results of laboratory and field tests reported here, equations were established which describe the evaporation and drainage components of the dewatering. These equations were used to calculate the effects of ponding depth, solids content of the tailing and clim- atic conditions on the time required to dewater the tailing. Since the calculations can be made with and without the drainage component, the advantages to be gained with drainage can be determined. The tailing used in the work was a clay slime from a sand washing operation. However, it is anticipated that this approach will be applicable to other similar tailing.

Full aerodynamic design development of the proposed fans for the enlarged primary ventilation system at Mount Isa Mines Limited was initiated before tender specifications were prepared. Theoretical and analytical design studies were made of many possibilities to determine the optimum proposal. Major considerations were efficiency, simplicity, standardization, and mechanical feasibility. Model testing and experimental work covered blading design, inlet shape, diffuser and tail fairing dimensions, instrumentation requirements, ancl noise studies.Theoretical and predicted performance estimates were prepared for the three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans.

The problems associated with underground mining continue to grow in size and complexity. As a result mine management is becoming aware of the benefits that can be achieved through the use of computer-oriented tools for system analysis. When such tools are employed in conjunction with benchmarking practices, the drivers of the system that lead to superior performance can more easily be determined. This paper discusses the use of the Simulation Language for Alternative Modelling (SLAM II) in the determination of the drivers of an underground room-and-pillar mining system. The mining operations included in the model consist of extracting, loading and hauling of the coal using continuous mining equipment in a room and pillar system. Equipment specifications and mining techniques used in the model are based upon current methods employed at the existing underground coal mines worldwide. The model developed is capable of adequately predicting the operational performance of the real world system from a statistical point of view. The results from the study show that computer simulation is an excellent tool for evaluating various mine configurations and for gaining a better understanding of the mining systems.

Problems of the creation of an automated cartographic system for environmental condition estimation and forecasting in mining region are discussed in this paper. The Geographic Information System (GIS) ARC/INFO is offered as the platform for such a system. A breadboard model of the system was tested on the example of Kemerovo province (Kuznetsk coal basin), the most ecologically impacted mining region of Russia. As a result parameters of territorial distribution of integrated adverse environmental impact of the industrial enterprises are reviewed. Administrative regions of Kemerovo province were rated according to a degree of environmental pollution. Further, specific weight of various industries in pollution of region is determined.

In Australian collieries, solutions to the outburst problem must be implemented in a highly competitive environment which has a low tolerance on negative productivity effects. Solutions are only applicable if the overall viability of the operation remains sound. Minimum time must be spent on alleviation and control measures. This is favoured by simple geology, advanced warning and efficient alleviation and control procedures. Research requirements in support of this include 1. an improved means of predicting the nature and location of outburst zones ahead of the face and, 2. an improved means of measuring the effectiveness of gas drainage. For additional safety at the face, a means of continuously monitoring outburst proneness is required. In general, greater emphasis is required on improved instrumentation.

George Fisher Mine, near Mount Isa in northwest Queensland, has been producing Pb-Zn-Ag ore since the late 1980s. It consists of two separate underground deposits, George Fisher South and George Fisher North. These two deposits are drilled and modelled separately but are crushed and hoisted as a single stream. The Pb-Zn concentrator in Mount Isa processes ore from George Fisher Mine and Black Star Open Cut, with production also from the Isa Lead Mine until January 2006. This paper outlines the steps involved in setting up a robust reconciliation system for George Fisher Mine, in conjunction with requirements of the Pb-Zn concentrator, Black Star Open Cut Mine and the Mount Isa Lead Mine. Good quality input data and commitment to training have contributed to establishing a robust and effective reconciliation system. Reconciliation data has highlighted several other continuous improvement opportunities.

The definition and recognition of silver minerals is very difficult. In general such minerals occur at low concentration and can be hard to identify and measure using conventional optical mineralogy. The present paper describes the use of the QEM*SEM system to tackle this problem and provide information of use to the metallurgist. Three aspects of QEM*SEM are used to special advantage in this application. Firstly the automated mode of operation is used to make a rapid search for the sparse phases. Secondly the X-ray capability is used to identify the mineral phases. Finally the image analysis programs quantify the distributions of the minerals which are found. The paper deals with the identification stage of the process and with the use of the data which can be derived. Silver minerals which covered a range of ore types and composition were collected and studied in detail. On the basis of these measurements and information received from a number of mining companies regarding the important minerals, a classification table was prepared. This table listed about 40 different silver mineral types which could be identified by QEM*SEM and which were of interest in silver recovery processes. Where the silver occurs in solid solution in concentrations greater than about one per cent, the silver content in the species was subdivided into ranges based on statistical intervals. The QEM*SEM system was programmed to recognise these as separate species. Examples are presented of the use of the system in defining the type and morphology of the silver mineralisation to assist in the assessment of batch flotation test Samples.

"The Coal Seam Gas (CSG) industry has seen a rapid increase in activity over a 30-year periodfrom the early 1990s within Australia. Despite public concerns over environmental issues, theCSG industry has increased in Queensland to the point where more than 90 per cent of naturalgas consumed in Queensland is CSG. The New South Wales (NSW) CSG industry has been slowerto respond for many reasons. Ninety-five per cent of natural gas consumed in NSW comes frominterstate. However, CSG activity in New South Wales is increasing notwithstanding publicconcerns. The CSG potential of three Petroleum Exploration Licenses (PELs) are being assessedwithin the Southern Sydney Basin that provides a unique opportunity to develop resourcesstrategically around many abandoned coal mines. The question has been asked - what do theseabandoned coal mines mean to the project? Are they good or bad? Are they friend or foe? Thispaper att empts to answer these questions and in doing so describes the coal mine ventilation andgas management philosophies and practices used to assess gas production potential. The coalmining philosophies not only have the potential to assist in the construction of a highly successfulCSG project, but they also potentially add signifi cant pre production value by re defi ning how theresources and reserves are assessed and therefore valued. The behaviour of abandoned coal minesand the goaves within the PELs are not well understood by the petroleum industry. However, in the Illawarra region there is an abundance of coal mining knowledge and expertise that if properly focused can greatly increase the chances of project success."

The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM), Kalgoorlie, has been performing dynamic testing of reinforcement systems as part of the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of Western Australia (MERIWA) Projects M349 and M349A sponsored by WASM, the Western Australian State Government and the mining industry. These projects have resulted in the construction and commissioning of the WASM Dynamic Test Facility and a program of reinforcement system testing. The primary purpose of the WASM projects is to evaluate the performance of complete reinforcement systems when subjected to an axial dynamic load. The test procedure, monitoring and associated analysis enable assessments for each component (ie the element, the internal fixing mechanism and the surface hardware) of the reinforcement system. The performance of a reinforcement system is usually defined by a static force-displacement response to axial loading. However, this static response may not be applicable to dynamic loadings associated with violent failure of rock due to overstressing as mines progress to greater depths. It was therefore appropriate that the responses of reinforcement systems subjected to dynamic loading be defined and evaluated. The key findings from the tests on a number of reinforcement systems are presented and recommendations made regarding their application for dynamic loading.

Placer Dome Asia Pacific operates eight mines in the region and has two closed operations that are either under rehabilitation or at the latter stage of care, monitoring and maintenance. All operating mines are scheduled to close within the next ten years based on current proven reserves. Mine closure planning and associated risk assessments are integrated into both strategic planning and day-to-day operations within the Placer Dome group. Mine closure is all about predicting the potential risks and Placer DomeÆs knowledge has improved following the planned closure at Kidston Gold mine in North Queensland. Planning for closure commenced in earnest in 1994, and focused on identifying the issues and associated potential risk to the environment, and ensuring that the most suitable control measures were implemented leading up to and following closure in July 2001. At all times during the process of planning, implementation, safety contractor management and post closure, the identification of risk and potential threats to the business have been identified and managed. Post closure risk assessment of rehabilitation strategies potential to fail has been completed in conjunction with URS and opportunities to manage these potential failures in perpetuity will be discussed along with lease surrender. Misima Mines is currently processing low-grade ore and plans to close in 2004. Planning for closure has been ongoing for several years with a focus on the social aspects and the impact of the mine closing on a remote island community. Misima Mines has assessed the risk profiles using a community closure focus group, to identify both the biophysical and social aspects for closure.

The rapid development of geometallurgy in the mining industry has occurred in relatively recent times. Its importance as an independent discipline in the mineral processing world has been emphasised and recognised. To a large degree, this is the result of a growing understanding of the ore type being processed and their application to provide better metallurgical responses in different mineral processing techniques. The development has matured from early progress through to geological knowledge and into the realm of the metallurgist and mining engineer. Working together, they have developed a powerful framework that will interpret a body of mineralisation into measurable properties.The integration of geometallurgy and operations has become of increasingly important due to improvement in understanding of an orebody as a natural system formed by a number of processes and with a definite fabric of mineralisation within different geological domain. These have to be taken into account when creating techniques that will enable operations to extract the valuable components from a distinct type of ore. Incorporation of such knowledge at an early stage of development, such as the feasibility stage significantly reduces the project risk.This paper is written from the unique perspective of a process engineer embedded within a geological team. The Ok Tedi porphyry copper and gold mine is an open-pit operation located within the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and is situated near the headwaters of the Ok Tedi-Fly River system. The climate is equatorial sub-alpine with rainfall ranging from five to ten metres per year. Mining commenced in 1984 and to-date approximately 500 Mt of waste rock has been produced. A failing waste rock dump system operates whereby the dumps are eroded by tributary creeks of the Ok Tedi. It is estimated that approximately 250 Mt of waste is retained within the upper reaches of the river system. The waste rock comprises both potentially acid forming rock and limestone and to-date the overall waste has been acid consuming. However, the long-term mine plan identifies declining limestone production and hence an increasing risk of acid generation over the remaining years of the operation. A program was initiated to determine the net acid producing potential (NAPP) required (ie target NAPP) to minimise the risk of acid generation within the waste rock dumps. The results from this program provide guidelines for an operational target NAPP strategy to provide sufficient acid buffering across all size fractions in the waste rock dump for long-term ARD control. Implementation of this plan requires additional limestone to be mined and co-disposed with ROM waste rock.

Virtual reality (VR) simulators represent a powerful tool for training humans to perform tasks which are otherwise expensive or dangerous to duplicate in the real world. The idea is not new. Flight simulators have been used for decades to train pilots for both commercial and military aviation. These systems have advanced to a point that they are integral to both the design and the operation of modern aircraft (Adams, Klowden and Hannaford, 2001; Mastaglio and Callahan, 1995). This technology has been successfully extended and utilised in the mining industry in a range of successful applications (Bise, 1997; Denby and Schofield, 1999a; Schofield, 2005; Henning et al, 2002; Kaiser, Vasak and Suorineni, 2005). There are a number of lessons that can be learned from other industries that have successfully utilised virtual technology for a number of years. Specific rules of thumb regarding the specification, development, application and operation of these simulators can be garnered from other industrial training systems and examined in a minerals industry context (Tromp and Schofield, 2004; Schofield, 2006). This paper intends to discuss some of these generic rules in the context of a number of recently developed virtual reality mining applications.

Surface wave formation induced by a high-strength submerged jet in a bottom blown metallurgical vessels has been studied experimentally by using one-seventh water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) reactor with two different tuyere configurations. Experimental results have been discussed in terms of the wave period, wave frequency and wave amplitude with respect to air injection rate and tuyere configuration at a 0.23 m bath height. The results from high speed photography observations displayed the formation of rotating surface waves which circulates within the water model. It was found that the frequency and the amplitude increased with gas injection rate. The wave period for off-centre nozzle orientation was found to be lower than those of the centre configuration. The experimental results also showed that the frequency of a rotating wave increases when the tuyere orientation becomes off-centred . The predicted amplitudes were in very good agreement with the experimental values over a range of gas flowrates between 0.00599m 3/s to 0.01081 m 3/s.

The Lihir gold operation, located in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), approximately 900 km north of Port Moresby, was commissioned in 1997 under the management of the Lihir Management Company, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. This management period ended in 2005 with Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) becoming self-managed. LGL is now the largest listed company in PNG and a top tier mining company in Australia. The focus of the operation since 2005 has been to take advantage of strong market conditions to increase cash flow while driving operating costs into the lowest quartile of gold producers. During this period production has increased through capital expansions, most notably with the addition of a flotation circuit, and through culture change and efficiency improvements. The next step forward for the Lihir operation is a major plant upgrade to increase production to an average of around one million ounces per annum by matching the ore processing rate to the ore mining rate. The key benefits of this project will be the addition of approximately 240 000 ounces per annum of gold production, the access to an additional one million ounces of gold and the ability to meet all stockpiling requirements. The Lihir operation has come out of the boom period in a strong position, is undertaking a major upgrade at a time when prices are low and labour is available, and will be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as they arise.

"A personal account of my journey from a student from suburban Melbourne in the 1970s through 40 odd years in and around the mining industry including the important events that have moulded my thinking and, as result, have formed the guiding principles of the mining contracting business and related entities that make up the Byrnecut Group. On reflection the game of chance has played a big part in the journey, from the selection of initial study based on my parents financial capability and the one and only offer of early employment by Western Mining Corporation where the formative phase of my career took place in what was the vibrant can do environment that existed in Kambalda in the 1970s and early 1980s. Subsequently the unplanned meeting with Frank Lubbock drawing me back to Kalgoorlie from Fiji in 1987 and the resultant formation of a private mining contracting business, the excitement of the mid 1980s Kalgoorlie mining environment followed by the turmoil of the 1987 stock market crash where business survival was the game, resulting in a relationship with the German based Thyssen Group.Thereafter the development of a large privately owned international multifaceted mining services group and the principles behind that growth. These include: development of strategic personnel and retention of those personnel cashflow management and debt within a private company scenario recognising opportunity for synergetic growth but insisting on market forces driving those business elements, as opposed to internal divisions group-wide sustainable business systems, particularly in relation to leading safety and training processes innovation and renewal to provide the elusive advantage in a competitive market the role of entrepreneurial small businesses in development of technology.The above principles combine to make a margin in a cut throat contracting environment, competing on the world stage against other contractors and owner mining options.CITATION:Coughlan, S, 2014. The Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF). The northern portion of the KMF hosts high-grade manganese referred to as Wessels’ type ore and is mined mostly from underground operations. WorleyParsons TWP is currently involved with the development of a ventilation shaft for one of these mines. The main challenge is to develop through the unconsolidated Kalahari material and weathered portion of the Karoo formation. These formations are preserved very erratically over short distances. A lack of understanding of the unique challenges presented for developing shafts in this area has resulted in the failed development of a shaft on an adjacent property and over-expended budgets on others.The renowned red sand of the Kalahari forms the top several tens of metres and overlies a horizon of gravels and calcrete that pose seasonally variable water ingress problems. A very stiff red clay horizon is then intersected. The Red Clay is prone to swellling during excavation and has been the main stumbling block on previous constructions. The standard approach has been to develop non-stop through this layer. The red clay is underlain by another horizon of calcrete, gravel and conglomerate that marks the bottom of the formation. The top of the Dwyka Tillite (Karoo Formation) is usually highly weathered and has a distinctive yellow colour. The weathered tillite is highly susceptible to drying and becomes friable. At reef-intersection, the combination of subhorizontal bedding and joints with the dominant subvertical faulting results in potential wedge failures in the manganese and ironstone units.This paper describes the geotechnical issues identified during the planning of the ventilation shaft and the risks associated with development through the Kalahari and weathered Karoo Formations.
