This paper presents a case study that describes the selection, development, engineering and construction of a process plant for the biological oxidative pre-treatment of a refractory pyrite-arsenopyrite gold ore flotation concentrate. Prefeasibility and feasibility study resource modeling, metallurgical testwork, and environmental and engineering studies are outlined. Options considered for oxidation of the ore, which examine cost, risk, operability, recovery, engineering and environmental aspects are compared, with particular reference to pressure and biological oxidation. The BIOX« biological oxidation process was selected as the preferred oxidation process and the flow sheet for this process is presented. Selection of the BOIX« process resulted in special requirements for the feed preparation circuit, residue treatment and disposal, materials of construction and engineering. Use of a biological process in ore treatment also introduces particular process and engineering risks the management of which are discussed.

In case of NATM, mechanical cutting is desirable in view of the original purpose of not spoiling natural ground. As typical tunnelling machines, there are two (2) kinds available: one is "Full Face Excavator" known as TBM (tunnel boring machine), and the other is "Roadheader" known as Part Face Excavator. By the use of the former, accurate profile cut is made possible, but there is a limit in the shape of a cutting section. By the use of the latter, cutting of various sections is made possible, but in order to cut a section economically and accurately, operators are required to have a high level of skill. In this text, we introduce Automatic Controlled Profile Cutting System (hereafter "ACPC" System) developed as a roadheader.

The Hyde Macraes Shear Zone is a mineralised low-angle shear within the Otago Schist traceable for ~30 km with a NW strike. It is been actively mined along 12km of this strike, producing >6 Moz of gold. The shear zone consists of greenschist facies rocks with a mineralogy only subtly different from that of the host schist. Pervasive fluid flow has occurred along grain boundaries and within microshears which have been enhanced by the deposition of hydrothermal graphite. We model the development of these microshears using a threedimensional numerical code. For an inhomogeneous initial rock with lithostatic fluid pressures and a dynamic permeability deformed under dextral non-coaxial flow, deformation is distributed into weak shear bands. Graphite deposition and associated reaction-softening has a dramatic effect on the development of model shear zones. Graphite is deposited into a shear band, weakening it and further localising the deformation into that shear band, producing an anastomosing and interconnected shear zone structure such as observed in the HMSZ. The degree of graphite precipitation and graphitic-induced weakening are varied in the models. More graphite precipitation with a low degree of reaction-softening results in more diffuse shear bands. In contrast less graphite deposition but with a high degree of reaction-softening more leads to the development of more focused shear bands. Graphite deposition has clearly controlled the formation of the HMSZ structure, and is an important indicator of potentially mineralised structures elsewhere.

Heavy mineral deposits accumulate on shorelines with interrupted sediment input. Beach deposits, which form on shallowly dipping coastal plains, are most favourable. However, shallow shelves seaward of cliffed coastlines are known to contain economic deposits. Significantgeologicalconditions are defined, from review of the stratigraphic and geomorphic controls on known deposits , for heavy mineral accumulation on the Swan Coastal Plain.

Barnes, Constructing Engineer of the Kalgurli Gold Mines Limited, and I am also much indebted to Mr. F. A. Moss, manager of the mine and for the privilege piIling information not previously made public.The limited time at my disposal has coolled to, curtail the scope of my paper to a few practices in ore treatment which are being worked on the Kalgurli Mine, but which I believe are of more than ordinary interest to thp~e Goncerned in modern treatment of gold ores. As an introduction to my subject it is, necessary that I should give a brief outline of the process by whiGh the gold is won from the complex sulpho-telluride ore of the Kalguili mine.My business is not to enter into any discussion as to the relative merits of the two rival sulpho-telluride ore treatment processes at work on the Kalgoorlie field, viz, the treatment of the unroasted ore after shining by solutions of bromocyanide, as against the treatment of the ore-after roasting by solutions of potassium or sodium cyanide either in filter presses or percolating sand vats. Even if reliable costs and percentages of extractions were obtainable in each case, it would not constitute an infallible basis of comparison, as the larger plants would necessarily have an advantage in cost per ton as against the small plants, and the other conditions obtaining are in many Cases dissimilar.

Not so many years ago the reason for an inadequate result from a geophysical survey was insufficient data or poor quality data. In many instances such as gravity, magnetic and radiometric surveys, both these constraints are vanishing or have vanished. High quality sensors, improved data storage, accurate differential GPS and top quality interpretive software now enable the interpreter to understand not just the cause of the anomaly but the host environment in which it resides. Examples of potential field data and also data provided by the more complex electromagnetic systems, from Australia Ghana, West Africa, are used as illustrations.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dykelstock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

A field investigation by making use of the seismic method has been carried out in order to comprehend the mechanism of rockburst and gas outburst and their predictive measures. The seismometers were so arranged both on the surface and underground as to enclose a mining panel. Seismic signals detected by the array were recorded and processed by the 32-kwords computer system. At present the system is available for analysing the source location and Richter's scale of each event and for visualizing the distribution of seismic foci and released energy at any mining stage. The magnitude distribution of events can be regarded as a comparable index of the seismic activities among mining panels. An analysis of the spatial density distribution of seismic energy in the mining panel can be useful to distinguish a highly stressed zone from stress released areas. The energy released curve or the rate of energy release determined from seismic data is also a good indication of the seismicity.

When driving mine roadways in the vicinity of tectonic disturbances and fault zones, sudden outbursts of gas, along with ejections of fine coal, occur. Substantial dynamic changes occur around the roadways in the coal and around the support. The problem has several aspects. Studies have been carried out on the technical analyses of the phenomena which occurred in the Velenje Lignite Mine from 1957 to 1988. The second part of the investigation involves systematic laboratory studies of strength and deformability characteristics of lignite samples and "in-situ" measurements of stress changes during the driving of some roadways. Analyses of events (using the model of limit convergence and the finite element method) showed the possibility of gas outbursts, taking into account the deformability conditions when crossing over from compact lignite to the disturbed region. The rate of advance of roadways and the method of support strongly influence the occurrence of the phenomenon. The preventative measures used in driving roadways under such conditions include trial drilling and the use of blasting instead of machine cutting.

The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. In the oxidized ores cllprite, tenorite, and trace brochantite have been found.

The mining industry is facing tremendous economic challenges. Fluctuating and depressed commodity prices, the ever-increasing pressure from environmental legislation and the competing global opportunities for capital investment are placing enormous strains on every aspect of the mining business. At the same time, mines are generally becoming older and deeper with all the logistical and rock mechanics difficulties that this entails. In the face of these new challenges the industry looks to technological advances to make operations more efficient and profitable. One approach is to develop and implement highly automated and computerised equipment as part of a trend towards major reductions in the underground workforce. This approach requires more capital investment rather than less and requires a more sophisticated and well-educated workforce with skills which are generally in high demand in society as a whole. It is difficult to see how the benefit that can be gained from such technology can justify the expenditures necessary to make it operate reliably underground on a daily basis. Nor is it easy to foresee how the mining industry, based as it is often in very remote areas, will be able to hire and retain sufficient numbers of people to maintain such fleets of equipment. Another approach, and the one which I favour, is the implementation of much greater control over the whole of the mining process. Mining is essentially a very simple process - we break rock and move it. The most cost-effective means of moving and processing the mining product depends entirely on the way it is broken - it depends on primary fragmentation by blasting. I propose that the way forward for the industry in the face of our present difficulties, is not new technology but is to utilise the level of technology which currently exists in ways which have traditionally been regarded as too difficult or too inflexible - improved fragmentation and the use of conveyors. The technical success of this approach depends on the complete re-design of the ore handling system from the face or stope drawpoint to surface. The fundamental issue which determines the success of this approach is designed fragmentation.

Geostatistical simulation techniques are used to quantify uncertainty of spatial attributes of interest describing mineral deposits, petroleum reservoirs, hydrogeological horizons, environmental contaminants and so on. The majority of existing methods consider second-order spatial statistics and Gaussian processes, while the more advanced multiple point-based simulation approaches are algorithmic and do not consistently account for the high-order spatial relations in data. Recently, simulation techniques for complex and non-Gaussian spatially distributed variables have been developed, based on high-order spatial cumulants, and make no assumptions on data distribution or require data transformations. In this paper, the previous developments are extended and a new approach for the joint simulation of multiple correlated variables using high-order spatial statistics is proposed. The technique is based on a new algorithm for the decorrelation of correlated variables into factors, using the so-termed diagonal domination condition of high-order cumulants. The decorrelated factors are then simulated using high-order simulation and back-transformed into the initial correlated variables. The decorrelation using diagonal domination of high-order statistics is tested with a data set from a multielement iron ore deposit, and then a fully known two-dimensional data set with two correlated variables is used to demonstrate the practical intricacies of the proposed method.CITATION:Minniakhmetov, I and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Four historical periods of Australian lead-zinc-silver exploration and development are identified.In the first period, 1841-1900, Australia's deeply weathered surface yielded bonanza deposits. The outcrops of easily worked secondary ores, enriched in silver and lead, were discovered by prospectors with the incentive of production at times of high silver price. Districts discovered in this period still contributed, in 1982, 60 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production, mainly from Broken Hill.The second period 1901-1944, was one of strong mine development but stagnant lead-zinc-silver exploration. Mount Isa was discovered and developed, but otherwise effort was devoted mainly to the mining of deposit extensions and to the metallurgical flotation of zinc. The deposit discovery rate was low but the discovery of Mount Isa was so significant that discoveries of this period contributed, in 1982, 30 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production.The third period 1945-1972 was one of re-invigorated exploration.New geological and geophysical surveys, developing concepts of ore genesis, and worldwide comparisons of orebody settings improved target area selection. Evolving remote sensing methods, and rapid analytical techniques, assisted detection of lead-zinc deposits. Initiation of exploration led to discovery:1. in regions of previously unsuspected lead-zinc-silver potential (Sorby Hills, Mons Cupri, Golden Grove).2. of poorly exposed deposits in recognized mineral districts (Hilton, H.Y.C., Woodlawn, Elura, Que River).3. during active exploration for another commodity (Brown's, Woodcutters, Mary River, Beltana, Lady Loretla and Pegmont).The period saw a sustained growth in lead-zinc-silver production mainly from established operations. Mines discovered during the third period contributed, in 1982, 7 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production.In the fourth period from 1973 to the present, exploration initiatives became fewer but resulted in continued discovery of poorly exposed deposits at Teutonic Bore, Thalanga, Benambra, Scuddles, Hellyer, and Jillawarra. Development initiatives strengthened in the period and production commenced at Woodlawn, Teutonic Bore, Que River and Elura; pre-feasibility work commenced at Scuddles, Hilton, Lady Loretta and Thalanga.

The Vanyukov Process is a bath smelting technology, that has been investigated for over 25 years and since 1977 has been in use on an industrial scale. Results of trials that have been carried out at the various pilot facilities over the past 15 years are considered in this paper. Both the main process aspects, design of the pilot furnaces and metal distributions are presented for consideration. Experience of the smelting of copper, copper-nickel, copper-zinc, nickel, lead, and pyrite concentrates is analysed.

In coal room and pillar, and pillar extraction panels, the sidewall conditions were investigated based on underground measurements and numerical simulations. Three-dimensional linear elastic models provided a useful and quick prediction of the amount of sidewall spalling. However, more complex constitutive models were required to simulate more accurately the extent of fracturing and its effect on the stress re-distribution. The input parameters of a Mohr-Coulomb model were determined by back-analysis of underground measurements, and the effect of the depth of the workings and the time dependent occcurrence of coal pillar fracturing were analyzed.
