Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral reflectance of the hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the footwall of the Hellyer Zn-Pb massive sulfide deposit was measured with a portable PIMATM infrared spectrometer. The Al-OH absorption band was used to derive information on the cation composition of white mica. The wavelength range of the Al-OH band from 2194 nm to 2222 nm reflects variation in the number of octahedral Al (Alvi) in white mica from 3.9 to 3.2 (based on four octahedral cations per formula). This Alvi range indicates a substantial compositional variation, covering most of the compositional region between muscovite (Alvi = 4.0) and phengite (Alvi = 3.0). Moreover, the spectral reflectance data show that the compositional variations of white mica are spatially related to the hydrothermal alteration zoning, such that the white mica of more phengitic composition tends to form in the main upflow fluid channels in the centre of the footwall alteration system. The results suggest that the octahedral Al content of white mica, which is spectrally definable by the wavelength of the Al-OH band using a field instrument such as the PIMATM, can be used to map fossil hydrothermal systems and potentially as vectors to mineralisation.

The mmmg operations carried out by North Broken Hill Limited, necessitate the use of four shafts for the haulage of ore, men, and supplies. These are:-1. Blackwood's Shaft.-British Section, which has 100 feet intervals between levels to the bottom 800 feet level plat;2. Thompson's Shaft.-British Section, which has 100 feet intervals between levels to the bottom 1400 feet level plat;3. No. 1 Shaft.-With intervals between levels:(a) 100 feet to the 800 feet level,(b) 150 feet from 800 feet level to the 1700 feet level;4. No. {2 Shaft.-2770 feet from collar to bottom plat, with intervals between levels: (a) 100 feet to 800 feet level, (b) 150 feet from 800 feet level to the 2600 feet level. (c) 170 feet from 2600 feet level to the 2770 feet level.All shafts have two cage compartments, and the No. 2 Shaft a skip installation in addition.For the control of hoisting operations an electric signalling system is installed on each shaft, and is supplemented by a counterbalanced rope pull ("Knocker line") operating a surface gong. In 1972 the Marra Mamba Iron Formation in the Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia was recognised as a stratigraphic horizon with significant potential for high grade iron ore reserves. Within the Newman area the Marra Mamba Iron Formation has been subdivided into four strati- graphic units: Lower BIF member, Middle BIF and shale member, Upper BIF member and Upper shale member - and a standard natural gamma log reference section compiled for the entire formation. The recognition of the Upper shale member as an additional unit contrasts to the previously proposed stratigraphy. Enrichment of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation to ore grade (0)8 percent calcined Fe) in the Newman area is restricted to the Upper BIF member and to a lesser extent to the Middle BIF and shale member. Typical ore from Orebody 29 is friable interbedded martite-ochreous goethite, signifi aptly different both physically and chemically from the Brockman Iron Formation ores of the Tom Price-Whaleback type. Large scale customer acceptance trials (in excess of 4 million tonnes) have shown that Marra Mamba ore crushed to fines and blended with Mt. Whaleback fines in a ratio of up to 15:85 forms an acceptable sinter feed.

The BHAS copper-lead matte leach process, developed in Port Pirie, South Australia, has been in operation on a commercial scale since 1984. This process is one of many developed in the past decade to recover copper via the hydrometallurgical route. In essence, the process involves a single stage agitative leach of 100% -75um matte in an acid chloride-sulphate lixiviant with gaseous oxygen as oxidant. The leach temperature is controlled at 85¦C to assist with reaction kinetics. After leaching, divalent copper is recovered from solution via a conventional solvent extraction/electrowinning circuit to yield cathode copper for sale The BHAS matte leach process has several unique characteristics cf. other commercial oxidative acid leach processes. These include i) the use of gaseous 02 as oxidant ii) H2SO4 addition as make up acid iii) Relatively low chloride ion addition (30 g/1) For this reason, extensive work was carried out into the optimization of leaching by Meadows (1985). Variables investigated included ò Oxygen flow-rate ò Agitation intensity ò Leach temperature ò Free acidity ò Chloride ion concentration ò Matte particle size The current work was conducted to determine the effect of cooling rate, and hence mineralogy, on the leaching characteristics.

Soluble salts can be removed from Bowmans lignite by water and acid leaching. The success of the removal of water soluble or acid exchangeable impurities is directly associated with the efficiency of dewatering these slurries. The filtration characteristics of a slurry at its natural pH (4.0) were poor, with a filter cake moisture of 65%. Acid treatment of the slurry at pH2 caused the filter cake moisture content to drop to 61 %. Various oils, oily surfactants and a flocculant were tested to determine the conditions for minimum filter cake moisture. A series of pilot scale filtration tests were conducted on flocculant dosed slurries with and without washing on a horizontal test unit. Moisture contents of 54% were obtained in laboratory testing using high additions of oily surfactant. For the pilot scale test work, moisture levels close to 60% were obtained with low flocculant additions, similar to results obtained in laboratory studies. Removal of soluble salts could be correlated directly to the final moisture content of the filter cake. This process of leaching followed by filtration resulted in the removal of approximately 75% (more than 80% with washing on the cloth) of the sodium chloride originally present in the lignite.

Australia today is one of the leading countries in the fields associated with the mineral industry, an industry which accounts for over 50% of overseas income and revenue to government. This is no accident. In order to be competitive in what was recog- nised very early in the country's history as a highly profitable busi- ness, the Australian mineral industry (mining, extractive and refining metallurgy) has traditionally been very innovation con- scious, a characteristic which has been evident from the begin- ning of the industry or very nearly so: Australia's geographic isolation and the dispersion of the mineral industry over wide distances made an exchange of ideas difficult and often impossible. One needs only to look at the inaugural address given by Sir Henry Ayers, the first president of the then Australasian Insti- tute of Mining Engineers, in Adelaide on 4th April, 1892 (1) "There is probably no other pursuit which depends more on its productive development and profitable results than in the extent and application of the scientific and mechanical knowledge possessed and exercised by its manager." and "Having in view the value of the mining industry of Austral- asians, they should be urged to apply their best skill with all the scientific and mechanical knowledge obtainable to its future development."

THE object of this paper is to offer some suggestions to assist metallurgists to supervise the operations of flotation plants. We do not yet thoroughly understand what "flotation" is or "why minerals float" and all attempts that have been made to explain the phenomena have been based on theory or imagination, and have not been capable of substantiation by practical demonstration, or even by laboratory tests; but it is wellknown that particular minerals will float in a liquid under certain specified conditions, and that some other minerals will not float under those conditions, and that, if a mixture of the two classes of minerals be subjected to those conditions, there will be separation of the minerals, of which one class will float and the other will remain unfloated as a residue. The duty of the flotation expert is to so control the operations and the conditions of the liquor as to obtain the best commercial result from the ore he is treating. The chief controlling factors in a flotation plant appear to fall under the following eight headings, all of which are important:1. Crushing.2. Rate and regularity of feed.3. Density of pulp.4. Temperature.5. Addition agents.6. Condition of circuit liquor.7. Agitation.8. Aeration.

To extract uranium from low-grade, calcrete-hosted uranium (CHU) ore is challenging owing to the presence of carbonate and swelling clay gangue minerals that require an alkaline lixiviant to be used. Western Australia possesses ~75 000 U3O8 t in CHU resources. Improvements to alkaline leach extraction practices would improve the economic potential of these deposits.A column leach study of CHU ore was run for 105 days using an alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate lixiviant. The uranium content of the liquor plateaued after 75 days at ~275 mg U/L; the calculated maximum solution capacity was 800 mg U/L. Spiked peaks and troughs were seen in the data set beyond the 60th day, where concentrations ranged from 220 - 290 mg U/L, indicating possible cyclic uptake and loss of uranium from the solution.Pristine and leached ore samples were geochemically analysed and mineralogically characterised at high resolution using a field emission gun-electron probe micro-analyser (FEG-EPMA). Results showed that leached ore samples from the top of the column contained less carnotite than pristine ore. In contrast, leached ore samples from the column base contained regions with more carnotite than pristine ore, indicating precipitation. Three carnotite grain micro-structures were identified in the leached ore; fan-spherulite, granular and core-shell cubes, with evidence for multiple growth phases.Evidence of carnotite precipitation was seen at the edge of and in pore spaces within montmorillonite and dolomite grains. The point of zero charge of both minerals is lower than the pH of the lixiviant (pH 10.8), thus the mineral surfaces are negatively charged and would not attract UO2(CO3)34- ions out of solution. Similarly, the decrease in the uranium content of the lixiviant is not attributed to super-saturation, as this was unlikely to have been achieved. Rock masses when subjected to uniaxial or triaxial cyclic loading (eg in hydraulic running tunnels, during retrieval and injection of oil and gas from storage underground caverns and haulage roads), the material has a tendency to fail in fatigue. In order to design safe and reliable underground structures, the determination of brittleness under such loading conditions becomes a pre-requisite. Brittleness influences strongly the failure process and makes the rock mass behaviour complex under different tunnelling and mining activities. Brittleness Index is a term to quantify the brittleness feature of a specimen. In the present study, an attempt has been made to quantify the brittleness of jointed specimens using different brittleness criteria. The joints of the model jointed specimens were oriented at an angle of θ=15° normal to the loading direction, each having three different JRC’s=2–4, 12–14 and 14–16. The specimens were tested under triaxial conditions in incremental complete cyclic test scheme performed at displacement-controlled mode. Different brittleness criteria were used ie stress-strain dependent brittleness index, Young Modulus approach and energy-balance based mechanism. It was observed that energy-balance based mechanism which consider the post failure behaviour is more descriptive to reflect the whole variation of brittleness from sheer brittleness to ductility.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) operates 13 excavators, 3 travelling stackers and 4 mobile slew conveyors in their three open cuts in the Latrobe Valley. The majority of these machines have been designed and constructed to a German design code current at the date of order. The SECV has always ensured that the machines were manufactured and erected to the appropriate standards. The SECV has a policy of having all machines inspected by an independent inspector every two years. These inspections are based on those carried out in Germany. The inspections have been carried out by inspectors from Germany who have the necessary experience to do similar work in German open cuts. Major faults found during the inspections have been repaired, however,the gradual breakdown of corrosion protection system has continued. The structures on some machines have areas of bad corrosion. This, coupled with wear on major mechanical equipment, would require an extensive outage to overhaul the machines. Refurbishment of Hazelwood Power Station will result in higher levels of production and extended life for the station. This will require improvement in the total output from Morwell Open Cut (MOC). To meet this increased coal demand, the open cut equipment will need to operate more efficiently and for a longer period of life.

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

A range of explosives has been specifically developed for soft ground blasting. These explosives can be used in both wet and dry blasting conditions, range in density from 0.3 - 1.2 g/cc and range in VoD from 2 - 4.5 km/s. This range of explosives has the potential to be tailored to ground type and is predicted to be suitable for a variety of applications which include: blasting in soft to medium overburden, coal blasting, wall control, and low vibration blasting. Trials have been conducted in several applications with encouraging results. Several cast/throw blasts have been conducted with these products partially replacing either ANFO or Heavy ANFO. The results from the blast have been equivalent in cast (per cent) and at reduced cost per unit volume. These products have also been used in presplit blasting and have again achieved equivalent or better results when compared to conventional presplit blasting at a lower cost per unit volume. This product has also been used in a vibration sensitive area replacing traditional explosive products, and generating excellent fragmentation and digging whilst maintaining vibration limits. This new range of products, NOVALITE, has shown great potential in many applications either reducing cost per unit volume, improving wall quality or improving productivity in environmentally sensitive areas.

The HYC mineral deposit at McArthur River is about 1.5 kilometres long by 1.0 kilometres wide and 55 metres thick, and contains 227 000 000 tonnes of ore of average grade 9.2% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 41 g/t Ag. Major studies have been carried out continuously since 1955 over the deposit and in the general region. This work is continuing. A small underground mine was developed by driving a decline tunnel to intersect the mineralization 80m below the surface. This provided a fully representative sample of the total deposit unaffected by weathering or oxidation, and was available for the major test program carried out in a pilot plant built to determine the full metallurgical charac- teristics of the ore. The pilot plant operations followed investigations by research institutions, both in Australia and overseas, into the problems of this ultra-fine grained ore. The ultra-fine grained nature of the ore required grinding to an average size of 95% passing 37 micro metres or 400 Tyler mesh. A major feasibility and environmental report was submitted to the government covering all aspects of a development program. The geological, engineering, metal- lurgical, economic, cultural and environmental submissions contained in this report were studied by external consult- ants employed by the government, who agreed with the conclusions that the McArthur HYC deposit is at present Uneconomic.

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.

The selection of the material sizing and mine dewatering systems are important elements in the development of a large-scale, high tonnage (greater than 4 Mt/a) underground hard rock mine. The sizing system will influence the size and type of the ore haulage system and therefore how the underground project is developed. With more underground developments considering or implementing caving methods of mining, the selection of the material sizing systems is also influenced by the caving fragmentation. Traditionally, crusher systems are used for material sizing in large hard rock mines, with the crusher installation and its ancillary equipment representing a substantial capital investment. Underground cave mining type operations generally express themselves with large surface subsidence areas, which can lead to large inflows of water from major rain events or purging underground aquifer systems. To minimise disruption to mine production, the dewatering system needs to be sized, with consideration to both storage and pumping capacities. The balance between storage and pumping capacity is assessed to provide the optimal economic solution with the appropriate risk measures. This paper outlines a process for the selection of material sizing and dewatering systems for large-scale caving operations. This process is illustrated with information drawn from NewcrestÆs Ridgeway Deeps Block Cave project. The Ridgeway Deeps Block Cave is located directly beneath the existing Ridgeway Sublevel Cave Mine.

While, in the past, a great deal of attention has been focussed on technical issues and the performance of explosives in rock, the explosive user, an essential link in the chain, has often been neglected. In the mining industry, too often, the benefits of excellent technical work have been degraded over time due to the lack of definitive and documented control. Using the principles of quality management a quality training system was developed and implemented for management of explosives use at Gunpowder Copper Ltd (GCL). This paper describes the structure of the system, its development and implementation, and contains practical advice and information for managers responsible for blasting and charge crews. The paper is in four parts: I Quality systems. A brief overview of the relevant aspects of total quality management that apply to explosives use. The requirements for documentation, management and auditing are explored. 2. Training for competency. The five essential elements of Competency Board Training (CBT) are examined, including auditing. 3. The Gunpowder Copper system. Implementation of the complete training system. Documentation and its control, auditing, instructions for operators, management responsibility and means of obtaining operator ownership are amongst the issues raised. Reporting requirements are the means to effectively manage change are described. 4. Summary. The paper concludes with the tangible benefits seen by Gunpowder Copper through the adoption of a quality training System.

Pressure leach liquors from the pressure oxidation of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore were treated to remove iron, either by pressure oxidation (the Hematite process) or with particles of magnetite (the Magnetite process), followed by cementation of various metals with zinc dust to obtain a purified solution from which zinc was electrowon. Satisfactory iron removal was achieved by both processes after neutralisation to pH 4.5 or 5.5. Pressure oxidation of the liquor at 200¦C and 690 kPa oxygen overpressure, conditions similar to those of the Hematite process used in the zinc industry, resulted in the precipitation of the iron as hematite. With the Magnetite process, an iron hydroxide was precipitated onto magnetite at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature and removed by a magnetic separation step. The performances of both these processes for the removal of iron are compared. It is concluded that the Magnetite process offers considerable cost savings. Other impurities, in particular arsenic, were also removed with the iron in both processes. Cementation at pH 5.2 and 85-90 ¦C with 3.5 g/L zinc dust reduced the levels of copper, cadmium, and nickel to a satisfactory level and subsequent electrolysis in a laboratory cell gave an acceptable deposit of zinc.

The effects of pH, temperature and the form of zinc used on the kinetics of cementation of cadmium from process liquors were investigated. Batch tests were conducted in stirred beakers, and the cementation reaction was found to be first order controlled. The rate controlling step was thought to be the diffusion of zinc ions from the zinc surface to the bulk solution. The pH was found to have a significant effect when using Prime Western zinc or zinc dust. High reaction rates were favoured at low pH levels and a minimum rate was observed at a pH level of approximately 5 to 5.5. The pH was found to have little effect when using high grade and cathode zinc. The reaction rates increased significantly with increasing temperature; a reaction temperature of 55¦C resulted in almost complete removal of zinc from solution. Effective cementation rates were only acheived with cathode zinc after pickling in acid. The nature and specification of zinc used determined the cementation rate of cadmium, resulting in the following order: 1. Zinc dust 2. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 3. High Grade zinc at pH 3 4. Pickled cathode zinc 5. Prime Western zinc at pH 3 6. High Grade zinc at pH 3 7. Cathode zinc "as received".

Laboratory testwork has been performed on ancient residues from the cyanidation of a previously roasted gold-containing pyrite and arsenopyrite ore. By grinding to 95 per cent minus 60 microns, and after a strong aeration conditioning of the pulp, a gold recovery of approximately 67 per cent was obtained by cyanidation. This recovery was brought up to 80 per cent by leaching with thiourea, after a preleaching step with sulphuric acid under severe conditions of acidity and temperature. To avoid excessive capital costs bound to such processes, it was decided to investigate the possibility of applying flotation after grinding at a size similar or finer than the one used for the leaching tests. The method turned out to give interesting results because of the natural flotability observed at pH values lower than two for particles rich in gold present in the residue. After two cleaning steps, a final concentrate, representing around one weight per cent of the feed, was obtained with an approximate gold content of 350 g/t, representing a batch recovery of gold of about 50 per cent. Apart from sulphuric acid, whose addition was very high (flotation slurries at 25 g/l H2SO4), other reagents were not found necessary. Additional flotation tests were carried out to examine whether the recycling of the cleaner tails was justified but the gain observed appeared insufficient.

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is an upgrade to one of MelbourneÆs ageing, under-capacity trunk sewers. It will reduce the volume and frequency of wet-weather overflows to the Merri and Moonee Ponds Creeks and facilitate new housing developments in the northern suburbs of the city. A total of 12.4 km of tunnel and eight vertical access shafts will be excavated as part of the two project stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water (MW) and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned and operated by Yarra Valley Water (YVW). The owners require the project to have a service life of 100 years, a requirement significantly beyond many of the current Australian Standards, which aim to achieve service lives greater than 60 years but are typically assumed to achieve 40 to 60 years. Because of the potentially corrosive natures of the external environment along the tunnels and the internal sewer environment, durability was a key concern for NSP1 and NSP2. Stringent specifications were applicable to the tunnel lining systems. This paper describes the corrosive environments impacting NSP1 and NSP2, explains the key design differences between the two stages and details the lining systems considered and selected to achieve the clientsÆ desired 100-year service life. The project design is complete and construction began in 2007.
