Re-opening of the old Proprietary mine has provided new exposures of the system of uralite dolerite dykes observed in 19110 by the Geological Sub-Committee of the Scientific Society of Broken Hill. The newly exposed dykes have been invaded and replaced by the massive ore, with development of manganese garnet and biotite adjacent to the sulphides. A similarly altered dyke in massive ore has been encountered in the North Broken Hill mine.The textures of the unaltered portions of these dykes indicate that they have not been affected by the intense regional metamorphism that has recrystallized the other rocks of the area. Moreover, in mineral composition and textures, in chemical composition, and in cross-cutting relations, they are so similar to the uralite dolerites of the district which post-date the folding and metamorphism of the Broken Hill area, that they must be regarded as typical members of this suite of post-metamorphic dykes.The invasion and replacement of the dykes by the massive sulphide ore, and their metasomatic alteration adjacent to the invading sulphides, establishes that the lode was formed after the dykes were intruded, so that the high temperature features of the ore cannot be attributed to metamorphism and recrystallization, but are primary features of high temperature hydrothermal deposition.INTRODUCTIONTwo cross dykes are recorded on the plan of the 300-ft. level of the Broken Hill lode accompanying the report on the geology of the Broken Hill lode published by the Geological Sub-Committee of the former Scientific Society of Broken Hill (1910). Up to 80 per cent of the copper in a bornite ore can be quickly leached with percolating acidified ferric sulphate solutions. The upper limit for rapid copper extraction is set by the conversion of bornite to slowly dissolving chalcopyrite. The dissolution occurs in two stages: a rapid linear initial stage, followed by a slow, non-linear stage. The initial step is largely controlled by the rate of oxidant supply (Fe2(S04)3); temperature is not an important variable during the initial reaction. The second leaching stage is controlled by chemical and physical factors and is temperature dependent. The initial copper leaching rates are insensitive to both the concentration of the ferrous sulphate reaction product, and the sulphuric acid concentration.

Research to develop the use of L.D.slag as an aggregate in road construc-tion is described. The chemistry and mineralogy of L.D. slags are shown to be generally similar to S. Yorkshire arc furnace slags, which have been success-fully used for road construction for many years, although both free lime and iron contents were found to be higher. Physical and mechanical properties are good but the slags' high density will result in lower "covering capacity"."Weathering" in stock piles is shown to significantly reduce free lime levels fairly rapidly although around 50 per cent of the mean "fresh free lime" content is still present even after two years treatment.

Batu Hijau is a calc-alkaline, island arc porphyry copper-gold deposit located in the southwest corner of Sumbawa Island in the Banda archipelago of southern Indonesia. Proven and probable reserves are 913 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.53 per cent copper (10.631 billion pounds Cu) and 0.41 g/t gold (389 tonnes Au). Construction of the deposit infrastructure began in October 1996, and formal approval for the project mobilisation was granted by the Indonesian government in May 1997. Preoperational testing and start-up of the first grinding line is scheduled for mid-year 1999.Copper and gold mineralisation are genetically related to at least three tonalite porphyry dykes and small plugs which intrude a quartz diorite stock that was emplaced into andesitic to dacitic pyroclastic rocks and lava flows. Faults are uncommon, and where they occur they do not significantly displace hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation zones.

The Matakan Unit of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea is a highly fossiliferous lagoonal deposit containing numerous coal pods and lenses. The unit is strati graphically part of the massive reefal Lelet Limestone of Miocence age. These organic-rich sediments have a high hydrocarbon potential as evident from microscopical observations as well as Rock- Eval pyrolysis data. The coal is varied in regard to dominant macerals, vitrinite being predominant in some parts and pollen and spores present in sufficient proportions to constitute a cannel coal elsewhere. Atomic H/C ratios of the coals are between kerogen type III and type II mainly, expressing the mixed nature of the coal and that of the associated sediments is type II. Early generated hydrocarbons (exsudatinite) have formed from pollen exines filling the pollen cavities and in places filling micro- fissures in the surrounding vitrinite.

For many crushed aggregate producers will the finest fraction minus 4 mm represent a problem. The fine material will fetch a much lower price than the coarser products, and may even be difficult to sell in some markets. The blasting operation will strongly influence the generation of fines after both blasting and crushing. Drill hole deviation together with the drill hole diameter, powder factor and velocity of detonation are the most important blasting parameters with regard to the generation of fines. Drill hole deviation is often ignored, and many operators will just reduce the drilling pattern in order to avoid hard bottom and an excessive number of boulders. The paper presents a technical and economic analysis of how drill hole deviation will lead to an increased generation of fines in crushed aggregate production. The analysis shows that the loss of sales revenues will be much higher than the extra costs for drilling and blasting caused by compensating for drill hole deviation by putting in more holes.

The Endeavor Mine, located to the north of Cobar, New South Wales, was purchased by CBH Resources Pty Ltd in September 2003. The operation has been producing lead and zinc concentrate continuously for over twenty-three years. In 2004, a water management program was instigated to improve the raw water use efficiency of the mining operation. The water management program involved the establishment of a Water Management Committee, a review and quantification of water use across the site, investigation and implementation of efficient water use practices, and workforce awareness training. The program has seen the amount of water used per tonne of ore milled reduced from an average of 1.08 kL/t in the March 2004 quarter, to 0.68 kL/t in the March 2005 quarter. This paper outlines the Endeavor Mine water management program and may serve as a model for other operations that are planning to improve their water use efficiency.

This is the time of year tor the presidential address, and with the present incumbent engaged in the coal mining industry, it will therefore come as no surprise to you that the theme of my address this evening is concerned with coal.There are other reasons for this apart from my contact with the coal industry. At present, coal is supplying considerable overseas revenue at a time when the remainder of the mining market is in a somewhat depressed state. That times will change goes without saying, if history is to be believed.However, so far so good for coal. My first reaction when The Institute indicated its wish that I be president for 1976 was to become deeply conscious of the honour bestowed on me.On consideration, I realized that very few past presidents have been intimately connected with the coal mining industry to the extent of indulging in it for lengthy periods as a full time occupation or, conversely, a part time interest for a long time. It also appears that not one had started their career in the industry. In my case, 'also, there were 8 very interesting years ,as a gold miner and metallurgist before commencing in coal.It therefore seemed appropriate to endeavour to discover ,why this should be so, as coal mining is now a very important part of a very important industry. What were the reasons why the industry took so long to emerge when there were ample reserves of easily accessible coal?Frankie and Johnnie in their bar room epic of the depression years concluded, and I paraphrase, that "their story held no moral, their story told no tale". The Porgera Joint Venture and Dyno Nobel have commissioned a joint project to optimise the drill and blast operations to increase the overall profitability of the mine. One of the aims of this project is to increase the throughput of semi autogenous (SAG) mills by optimising the blast fragmentation. A number of test blasts were conducted during the period May 2000 to January 2002 and the ore from these blasts was campaigned through the mill. The data from these trials suggested up to 15 per cent increase in the SAG mill throughput with high energy blast designs. However, changes in ore geology (shape, structure and hardness) and potential ore dilution/loss and wall damage have raised concerns about the economic benefits of these designs over the entire orebody. The lack of a system to track the economic benefits of these modified designs has also compounded these concerns. PJV and DynoConsult, the consulting arm of Dyno Nobel have initiated steps to minimise the potential for ore dilution and wall damage resulting from these modified designs. DynoConsult worked with Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to develop and implement a blast management system to track the quality of blast implementation and down stream process benefits. This paper discusses the implementation of the system and the results achieved to date.

While objective selection and assessments are an accepted part of employing managers and other staff, they have had only a limited place when selecting mineworkers in Australia. Wambo Mining Corporation has used occupational testing as part of its recruitment process since 1994. For managers and staff in particular, it is considered this has contributed significantly to a 95 % fit of those appointees. In 1997 when Wambo undertook development of a new "on site" subsidiary underground mine called Wollemi Services, they wanted to select the most appropriate people in terms of skill and on the job performance. To achieve this they reviewed and improved their recruitment processes to facilitate selection and transfer of an initial intake of almost 50 staff and mineworkers.One of the issues for Human Resource Management was to provide an environment where employees could let go of previously held (but not necessarily individually believed) entrenched views about individual performance and assessment. It needed to be emphasised that performance could be objectively and fairly assessed. More importantly, the performance being assessed was the application of skills and that new skills could be learnt and individuals could choose to change Behaviour.

The emerging discipline of ægeometallurgyÆ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity that reflects an ongoing commercial and cultural trend towards more effective mine site integration and optimisation. The AMIRA International P843 æGeMIIIÆ project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a major new cross discipline research collaboration designed to provide support for this emerging industry trend. The project is currently supported by 18 global mineral companies and involves collaboration between the CODES Centre of Excellence (University of Tasmania), JKMRC and BRC (University of Queensland) and CSIRO Exploration and Mining. These groups represent recognised research excellence in the fields of economic geology, automated core logging, advanced microscopy and process mineralogy, mineral processing, mine planning and resource optimisation. The needs and challenges of geometallurgy as an integrated activity will be outlined together with the ongoing contribution and aims of the AMIRA P843 æGeMIIIÆ project. The main emphasis is on development of predictive geometallurgical indices for key processing performance parameters that reflect inherent geological variability. The ultimate aim is to provide predictive indices of geometallurgical performance that can be confidently embedded into resource models and used for risk-defined mine planning and optimisation.

Passive systems for the treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) are typically more economic in the long term than active systems. Various flow charts for treatment selection have been prepared by scientists in the USA, however, they have typically not included a variable important at New Zealand AMD sites on the West Coast: topography and available land area. Very steep topography, dense and often protected vegetation (and animals such as snails), and a high-rainfall climate result in AMD with very high flow rates in locations with very limited space for remediation. Flow charts specific to New Zealand have been prepared which accommodate topography and available land area. Parameters necessary to use the flow charts are iron and aluminium concentrations, pH, ferrous to ferric iron ratio, dissolved oxygen concentration, topography and available land area. Prior to full scale construction, is it recommended that flow rates be quantified, small-scale trials be conducted, and cost, effectiveness, limitations, and risk of failure be reviewed for various options. One full-scale remediation system has been installed in New Zealand based on this methodology and another is planned. The performance of these systems, as well as future systems to be installed, will be used to validate these treatment system flow charts.

Hilton Mine is located 20 km north of the city of Mount Isa and Isa Mine in far north west Queensland. The sealed road used by the 500 employees to commute from the city is part of the Barkly Highway linking Mt Isa to the Northern Territory.Although discovered in 1947, major underground development did not start until late-1982 and first cut-and-fill production in mid-1987. The J53 exploration shaft was sunk in 1970-73 and the main P49 shaft in 1973-75. Since January 1990, most of Hilton ore production has been treated in the Hilton Concentrator, and concentrates trucked in slurry tankers to Isa for smelting or shipping.

To establish the design and the capacity of the Stanwell Magnesium Plant, Australian Magnesium Corporation Ltd (AMC) with Fluor Australia has modelled the operation of the magnesium plant using ARENA Simulation Modelling. The reliability model has been used to evaluate: surge capacities required between different sections of the plant; critical equipment requiring standby capacity; the number of trains required for different sections of the plant; and potential capital cost reduction options. The reliability model was established using the detailed Process Flow Diagrams, reliability information from literature and maintenance, operation and start-up experience from the Demonstration Plant. The model was run with different plant configurations to assist AMC in determining the most effective configuration to provide the production capacity at the lowest capital cost. The model was not only able to confirm the plant capacity to the independent technical expert but was able to minimise quantitative risk by minimising the quantities of hazardous materials on site. Fluor Australia provided the ARENA simulation expertise and has used this software for optimising new plant design and to establish improvements in operating plants. Reliability modelling is a normal feature of chemical plant design but is rarely used in the resource industry. The experience gained by AMC in the modelling system has indicated that metallurgical plant design can be improved by the application of reliability modelling.

This paper addresses project commissioning, that is, activities that culminate in the transfer of a project from the construction phase to routine plant operation. These activities should be initiated early in the engineering and design phase to ensure that the plant design is operator friendly and that construction is scheduled such that pre-operational testing and hand over to the owner occurs in a timely and cost-effective manner. For the purposes of this paper, commissioning includes all activities related to pre-operational testing, no-load testing, water commissioning, and ore commissioning. That is, all activities from construction completion to practical completion of the prime contract. This process is facilitated in numerous ways dependent on the nature of the project prime contract and the size of the project. For small lump sum projects, the contractor's responsibility may include all phases of commissioning to practical completion, whereas, a managing contractor on a complex multi-contract project may only be required to bring the project to mechanical completion and hand over to the owner for ore commissioning. Silver and gold bearing ore from the Palmarejo mine, located within the Mexican state of Chihuahua, contains a complex mix of electrum, native silver, silver sulfides and silver chlorides. This paper presents a case study that describes the selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of silver and gold from this ore. Process circuit feasibility study modelling, metallurgical test work and engineering studies are outlined. Options considered to optimise the recovery of the contained silver and gold are compared, based upon cost, operability, recovery and engineering aspects. Concentration by flotation was found to be the preferred primary recovery route. Intensive leaching of the flotation concentrate resulted in solution grades sufficient to allow direct electrowinning to be evaluated against the more traditional Merrill Crowe process. The flotation tailings stream is processed through a separate leaching stage as there is sufficient economic metal extractable from this stream. The processing flow sheet, which is designed to maximise the recovery from both the flotation concentrate and tailings, and to utilise a common metal production facility, is presented.

A large open pit is planned at the site of an existing underground mine. Strategic planning work has been undertaken to investigate the project value associated with an expansion of underground operations in conjunction with the proposed pit. Previous analysis determined that any depletion of the available pit resource that changes the optimum pushback sequence has a significant negative impact on overall project value. Therefore, to investigate the viability of an underground expansion requires a system to identify the stope resource that would add value to a combined operation if mined ahead of the pit. The key solution to this problem was to generate a resource model variable that defines the blocks, which have greater discounted value if mined by stoping rather than by the open pit. A key assumption was that the open pit is the main driver of overall project value. From the identified potential underground resource, series of mineable stope shells were generated at a range of cut-offs. This stope reserve data formed the input to a mixed integer program based software tool that was developed and used to optimise the underground mining plan, at conceptual level, for various project configurations. A dynamic programming tool was then applied to evaluate the optimum value of a combined open pit and underground operation. The overall objective of this project was to determine the strategic plan that yields the optimum value for a combined undergroundûopen pit operation. The results provided a clear focus and direction for more detailed design and planning.

Water is an integral and essential part of mining business. Two issues crucial in the management of this resource, scarcity and excess, are increasing awareness of the importance of water and changing the value perceptions of the industry because they affect both the existence and continuation of the business. Therefore its value should be reflected in the water management that is practised on site. Historically water in mining has been perceived to be of low value so management practices have not been good or well implemented. Political and social transformation in South Africa has been accompanied by the promulgation of new legislation. South African water law is now underpinned by Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) principles. It impacts water pricing, provides for water pollution charges, prioritises water users, has specific mining and water related components and requires water licensing as part of the licence to mine. Mining no longer has a priority on water resources and has to compete with other water users to gain access to resources. New institutional arrangements are being put in place to implement the regulations. All this requires a paradigm shift in miningÆs view of water. Generally the sector is still catching up with the new requirements, principles and philosophies. However, the way in which South African mining values water is changing. This is demonstrated in partnerships between the industry and other water users. These partnerships are Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in practice and they achieve sustainable development goals. These partnerships are essential for mining to stay in business, expand operational capacity, reduce impacts, prevent legal action and reduce reputational risks.

"A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company.
