In coal preparation, large dense medium cyclones (DMC) at low pressure heads (typically 9D where D = cyclone diameter) are the norm. This contrasts with high density mineral applications where, largely for historical reasons, smaller cyclones at high heads are the standard. There are advantages in preferring large diameter cyclones at low heads, assuming that metallurgical performance does not suffer significantly. These include simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, reduced medium pumping demands, smaller buildings and overall lower capital and operating costs. In 2008, therefore, Xstrata Zinc decided to trial a single DSM-design 800 mm cyclone in one of its four DMC lines at Mt Isa, replacing the four 400 mm cyclones previously installed. Circumstances allowed a low head of 9.5 D to be trialled, compared with the existing 400 mm head of 21.5 D. This paper describes the trial, including tests using painted ore particles as tracers, estimates of yield and metal recovery, and wear monitoring. The larger unit performed well. There was no evidence that metallurgical performance in terms of metal recovery and waste reject rate suffered, and there was some evidence that it may have improved. Cyclone life increased, and preliminary data suggest that the replacement cost of the 800 mm cyclones is less than half that of the 400 mm units, and this is expected to improve. The plant layout and operability have also improved significantly. Xstrata has therefore decided to convert the whole plant to four low head 800 mm units, replacing the original 16 high head 400 mm units. The paper includes an explanation of the effect of static head on DMC separating force. It also reviews earlier research on diamond applications, and applies a general DMC process model to the Xstrata case, both of which confirm that large, low head cyclones are appropriate in mineral applications, contrary to conventional practice. Such units could significantly reduce both the capital and operating costs of DMC plants in mineral applications.

This paper is written as a supplement to that of Edwards, Baker and Knight on "The Geology of the Wonthaggi Coalfield" 1, the West Area pit being in an early developmental stage at the time of their paper. The thin seams to the west of Dudley Basin 2 had beenknown for many years but it was not until 1935 that it became necessary to work them. The West Area Pit came into production as Dudley Area Pit approached exhaustion in 1937. From available information it was estimated that early work would be in a 36in. bottom seam. The present top seam was not included in the reserves, but it was to be extracted where it proved thick enough for economical working.THE SEAMSEdwards, Baker and :Knight (1944) had insufficient information to correlate positively the West Area seams with those in the Dudley Basin. Their opinion was, however, that they were a westerly extension of the Bottom Seam. Since then the driving of the present north-east heading towards No. 4 Bench McBride Tunnel has established that the West Area seams are those worked as Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. West Area Top Seam is a seam that occurred above the Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. Only sporadic attempts have been made to work it in Central Area, because 30in. was considered an economic minimum height until recent times. This seam should not be confused with Top Seam, Dudley Basin, which lies some 300ft. above the bottom seam measures and except in isolated areas over deeper workings has been eroded away in West Area.

This paper is concerned with the application of a probabilistic approach to the risk assessment of mining projects.In current practice, sensitivity analysis is the most commonly used deterministic approach of accounting for the uncertainties involved in mining project evaluation, while Monte Carlo simulation is considered to be the best probabilistic method available for the same purpose. The methodology of the approach proposed in this paper is as simple as that of sensitivity analysis. However, the results obtained can be more comprehensive than those obtained from Monte Carlo simulation. Various important statistical features, such as correlation and skewness, of the basic random parameters can be easily taken into account by the proposed approach. Example studies are demonstrated. Lotus 123 was employed for the associated probabilistic calculations.

During blasting body wave interaction with geometrical surfaces induces Rayleigh-waves which propagate along free surfaces, e.g. crack faces or delaminated rock layers. These Rayleigh-waves carry most of their energy within a very shallow surface layer and propagate with very little attenuation in real rock materials. Upon interaction with a crack front a very strong mixed mode stress intensity factor may result and lead to fracture initiation. On the basis of experimental photomechanical results the history of dynamic stress intensity factors Kt and K2 will be studied in Detail.

Located in North West Queensland, XstrataÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) is one of the largest underground mines in Australia with annual production exceeding six million tonnes of ore with average copper grades of three per cent. As at 30 June 2006, the Ore Reserve inventory totalled 87 Mt, with annual diamond drilling planned at >40 000 m in order to convert existing resources and test and define exploration targets. The role of the geology department within MICO is to collect, interpret and communicate relevant geological information to ensure the optimal extraction of ore. Routine underground inspections across multiple ore sources are undertaken and the information derived is then distributed to a range of professionals, operational personnel and management. The information is a æreal-timeÆ geological view for the stakeholders. Ongoing data collection and interpretation has developed a strong geological input to all mine planning processes within MICO. This has created strong synergies between mine planning professionals and a throughput benefit has been seen all the way to the concentrator. The MICO geological framework also provides avenues for a geological focus away from short-term production requirements, and as a result significant orebody scale observations and patterns have been realised that have led to an increase in the accuracy of geological and resource models. This has provided practical benefits for short-term scheduling and production, whilst enabling the realisation of long-term benefits that have a strong potential to increase the volume and value of the MICO resource. This paper will discuss the various mine geology contributions at MICO and illustrate some examples where mine geological input from graduate level has added significant value to the MICO business.

Sub-level stoping with consolidated rockfill is the main method for mining steep dipping baryte and fluorite veins in Germany. Drifting is fully mechanised using drill jumbos, LHD units and shotcrete support. Stopes have heights up to 50 m with sub-level distances up to 15 m. Winning of the pillars between sub-levels is done by longhole blasting in slices of 3-5 m length on strike. Mucking is done on the lowermost level by LHD units. After each blast rockfill with binder (cement and/or fly ash) is dumped into the scope from the uppermost level. Economic success depends on both geological and technical parameters and factors, eg vein thickness and dip, ore grade, size and distance of sub-level drifts. Of particular influence are ore loss in pillar winning and dilution both in drifting on vein and in pillar mining. A comprehensive computer program has been developed for calculating the total cost per tonne run-of-mine ore respectively per tonne of concentrate for a single stope. The cost model includes development, longhole blasting, mucking and haulage to the mill, milling and ventilation. All costs (labour, energy, supplies, maintenance, depreciation and capital cost) are taken into account. Dilution and recovery are both considered. The program can be used to estimate the cost of mining a particular stope. It can also be used to investigate the influence of relevant parameters and factors on the economic result. By this way it should be possible to optimise the technical design of a stope.

THIS paper deals with the handling of the various materials used in the 100-ton zinc plant at Risdon, and, in view of the magnitude of the works, the configuration of the ground covered by these works, the variety of the rnaterials used, and the large quantities, a very attractive and interesting subject is opened.The works are situated on the right bank of the River Derwent, about four miles above Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. The Risdon works cover a space of 149 acres, the area being :3800 yards long by 2800 yards wide, and the elevations vary from 6 ft. above high-water mark at the wharf and foreshore to 163 ft. above high-water mark at the power station, these being the limiting points as regards elevation which are considered in this paper. Throughout the paper elevations are given in feet above high-water mark. Fig. 1 shows a general view of the works taken from the opposite bank of the River Derwent. The wharf is clearly shown, with SS Kekerangu loading residue; behind the wharf is seen the inclined conveyor leading to the cakine bin; further up the hill is the leaching division. No. 1 haulage runs to the left of this up to a point on the left of the power station, the large reinforced concrete building at the top of the hill. Below this is the cell room, the largest building on the plant. The roasting division, not very clearly seen, lies at the foot of the main stack, and the casting division lies to the left of this, between the leaching division and the cell room. A large wharf has been construl'ted alongside the works. This wharf is 880 ft. long and 60 ft. wide. It is capable of berthing large overseas steamers, as at low tide there is a depth of :30 ft. of water. An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. Lightweight polymer grids have recently been introduced to the mining industry. They are currently being used for roof and rib control, longwall shield recovery, safety guarding or barricade, highwall screening, internal reinforcement of gunnite/shotcrete applications, sub-base reinforcement, construction of steepened slopes, retaining walls, mine reclamation (i.e. erosion control, turf reinforcement), and in numerous mining waste related projects. These polymer mining grids utilize a strong, lightweight polymer, usually special grades of polypropylene or polyethylene. High tensile strengths are achieved by molecular orientation of these polymers in the manufacturing process. The first step in the manufacturing process is to extrude the polymers into thick continuous sheets. These sheets are then punched, and drawn into open grid structures. Aperture size and configuration are controlled by the geometry of the punched hole and the degree to which the grids are stretched. The drawing process is the key to the molecular orientation required for the tensile strengths. These long chain polymer molecules in their natural state have a random orientation. When stretched, the molecules are pulled into a parallel alignment, thus creating a lightweight product with tensile strength comparable to Steel.

Australian continental crust has accreted and consolidated by thirds: 1/3 during Archean time, 1/3 during Early to mid- Proterozoic time, and 1/3 during latest Precambrian to mostly Paleozoic time. The progression of orogenic systems and the crustal consolidations they represent seem not fundamentally different in basic orogenic processes from better known Mesozoic-Cenozoic examples in that accretionary, continental margin, collisional, and intraplate intracratonic inverted and/or reactivated systems are all recognizable in the tectonic evolution of Australia.

Roof conditions at Southern Colliery, the second longwall mine to be established at German Creek, were found to be much stronger and more massive than at the earlier longwall mine on the lease. Investigations were made to ascertain the level of face support required for longwall extraction under the changed geological conditions. Geotechnical information was provided from drillholes and highwall exposures. Downhole geophysical logs, notably the sonic velocity log, were used to obtain a distribution of the major lithological units over the mine area. A representative type section of the strata and geomechanical properties was compiled to form the basis for numerical modelling. Two-dimensional finite element methods were used to predict strata movements and chock loads under cantilevered roof conditions. The model incorporated a 6.3 in thick roof beam either bonded or detached, with either a 2 in or 5 in overhang. The solid rib, immediate roof, chock support and goaf were modelled as distinct parts, in addition a front abutment stress profile, derived from three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity analysis, was superimposed on the model.

Geology is generally treated as a æfront endÆ step in mine development. After infill drilling, the majority of resource estimation, mine-planning, development, mineral processing strategies and operational procedures are planned and implemented with little geological input, particularly in open pit operations. However, significant benefits in overall costs, cash flow, and technical risk reduction can be realised when sound geology is utilised more rigorously throughout the mining process. This under-utilisation of geology in the mining process has arisen due to a combination of factors:A lack of interest in, or knowledge of the full mining process by geologists. Few geologists fully understand where their inputs make critical impacts on downstream users. As a result of this, geologists generally do not focus their inputs towards areas of greatest value added, ie addressing issues critical for other members of the mining team. Most importantly, few geologists effectively communicate their results to the downstream users of their geology models. The results are that the potential benefits of geology, and the appropriate status of geology in the mining industry, are not fully realised. It is fundamental to realise exactly what geologists do. Geologists constrain geological processes and geometry. All geoscientific tools at the geologistsÆ disposal are geared towards one of these goals. An emphasis on geological processes is present throughout the exploration process, whereas in the resource estimation and mine development process an emphasis on geometry is required. The mining process is a web of disciplines that are attempting to optimise development of a resource to provide value to shareholders. Yet few people within these disciplines have a full appreciation of this web, and where sound geology inputs can add value through various feedback loops. Geology inputs do not end at the resource estimation stage, nor are they relegated to grade control implementation. If geologists have an appreciation of the mining process and close liaison with the other disciplines such as geostatistics, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, and mining engineering, they can significantly benefit project costs, timelines, and constrain technical risk by addressing their issues at the earliest possible stage. Furthermore, the mining process is not a single pass timeline, but an iterative process where the exploration, resource definition, mine planning and mining loop is continually repeated over the life of a project. Therefore, the potential inputs of geology are critical throughout the mining process. Effective communication of the impacts of geology inputs on downstream users is often lacking on mining projects. The most effective way to communicate geological results is through where it impacts most û project risk. Focussing all geology inputs and communication in terms of potential material risk allows the geologist to be more effective in contributing value to the mining process, and allows the downstream users of geology inputs to better constrain the risks associated with their aspects of the mining project. Through a program of geologists:taking an interest in the entire mining process and identifying critical areas for geology inputs to downstream users (the geologistsÆ clients); focussing geology inputs to address the potentially material issues on mining projects; and communicating their inputs to the æclientsÆ in terms of technical risk, geology will be much better integrated into the mining process. As a result, the potential benefits of geology throughout the mining process will be realised, and the status of geologists within the mining process will be elevated to a more pivotal position.

Pyrite and Cu-concentrate were roasted in vertically suspended state in an externally heated tube. Tubes of three different lengths of reaction zone were used for three different reaction times. Roasted ores were submitted to chemical analysis and the extent of roasting reactions was determined. In case of pyrite, extent of roasting reactions was not affected much by reactor length and heating temperature (above 500¦C), but was considerably by ore/air ratio. Micro- scopic and XMA examinations led to the conclus- ion that pyrite particles decomposed to pyrrho- tite and then pyrrhotite was oxidized to give Fe-S-0 melt, magnetite and hematite. The extent of reaction was not uniform in all particles but had a wide distribution from unreacted pyrite to completely oxidized particles. Combustion of Cu-concentrate from Kuroko complex sulfide ore ) was unstable under a uniform wall temperature of 450¦C, but proceed- ed rapidly at temperatures above 500¦C. Sticking of roasted ores to the wall of the reaction tube induced choking of the tube, caused by melting of roasted ores, at tempera- tures above 950¦C. Enrichment of oxygen exterted less influence on reaction rate than heating temperature of the tube. Particle size of ore had a big effect on reaction rate.

This paper, one of two written about the Queensland Railways Brunswick Street tunnels presented at the VIII Australian Tunnelling Conference, 1993, describes the design and monitoring aspects of the railway tunnels built between Central Station and Brunswick Street Station.The design was mainly influenced by the need to minimise settlement of buildings above the route. The underlying theory behind the construction of an on-line size analysis system is described together with an introduction to the Artificial Intelligent techniques that it is founded on. Previous systems based on more traditional technology such as edge detection and dilation algorithms have been restricted by the significant processing power they require, this has resulted in the production of systems with either reduced functionality or severe hardware requirements. A neural network approach offered a new perspective to the problem of size analysis; the ability of a network to learn and recognise subtle patterns in training data before on-line processing is initiated opened up the possibility for the production of a fully functioning practical system. The format of the training data had to be carefully analysed prior to its implementation in a neural network as the capability of a neural network solution depends as much upon a suitable data preparation as it does on the system architecture. To facilitate experimentation with various profile quantification techniques such as fourier and fractal analysis an Image Profile Analysis System was constructed (IPAS) in software on a personal computer. The IPAS system was produced with the aim of pre-processing image data to create data sets for experimenting with external neural network packages. The system allows the analysis of both real images obtained by image capture and simulated images created by an in-built in simulator. A measurement comparison scheme is also included together with a case study concerned with the frequency analysis of simulated images. The power of neural networks combined with the data compression provided by profiling removes the need for direct measurement of individual particles. This has obvious implications on the level of hardware necessary, and ultimately the expense of a stand alone system. The extrusive nature of data collection via an image analysis system will also permit simple installation of a shipped system; eliminating any requirement for interference with existing machinery.

A co-operative research project, combining Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research scientists findings and company iron ore geologists' expertise, resulted in new concepts about the origins, distribution and complexitie of iron ores and their parent rocks (banded iron-formation or BIF) in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Understanding these problems was important to the efficiency of exploration, development and ultimate mining of iron ores. This genetic model, based on a detailed mineralogic background, was modified by Mt Newman geologists to obtain a user oriented classification for practical application in the field.The proposed Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) gives iron ore geologists a basis from which to understand, identify and record the various mineralogic and physical characteristics of the many genetically different ore types occurring within and between orebodies in the Pilbara. More definitive quality control over ore products can be achieved based on the detailed understanding of ore types which the PIOC allows, compared to current classifications which deal only with the physical nature of ores. Of equal importance, the classification remains sufficiently simple to enable owners, operators and buyers to achieve a basic appreciation of ore type variations.With little modification, it is believed the classification has applications beyond the Pilbara, to iron ore worldwide.

Most geostatistical techniques applied to the estimation of ore reserves assume relatively unifonn grade and thickness within an ore deposit environment. In shear-hosted mineralisation this rarely occurs. The distribution of mineralisation is controlled by the kinematic and geometric variation within the shear zone. Although the kinematic variation is dependent primarily on the temperature (and consequently the depth) of formation of the deposit, the geometric variation appears to be relatively insensitive to this parameter. Shoot mineralisation is controlled either by the intersection of secoodary shear planes (brittle deformation) or the stretching lineation of the mylonitic fabric (ductile defonnation).Once the shear geometry is clearly identified, it is critical to review the distribution of grade and thickness of mineralisation. The practice of cutting high-grade intersections without reference to the shear model leads to underestimation of the amount of gold in the deposit. High-grade shoots may occur as pipe-shaped bodies within the system; their identification is essential for both resource estimation and mine planning purposes.
