Extensive infrastructure construction works were required for the development of the underground and open-cut coal mine at Ulan to a production capacity of 5 million tonnes of steaming coal per annum. The Ulan Mine development project was constructed in a two year period at a cost of $240 million. The infrastructure component included the construction of the mine site building works, civil works and 150km of railway, valued at $105 million. These works were successfully completed under a construction management agreement within two years. The separate elements of the project are described in detail in the paper.

This paper illustrates that sampling problems and difficulties are as common in an R&D environment as they are in an operating plant. Researchers need to be aware of the potential influence of poor sampling practices and when feasible determine the sampling and analytical precision at the start of any experimentation. Specific problems that have been encountered are discussed and the procedures implemented to overcome these difficulties are described. Examples from projects include the cyanidation of a Au/Ag ore, column leaching of refractory gold and oxide ores, the bioremediation of contaminated sites and the flotation of ore containing native copper.

This project evaluated the performance of nine passive treatment methods by studying 137 treatment units in eight eastern states. Performance was normalised according to construction cost, projected service life and kilograms of acid load treated. Results were dimensioned as $/kg of acid load treated/year. These costs were then compared to those of chemical treatment. Sites that achieved acid load reductions at costs below those of chemical treatment were considered successful. In addition to evaluating the performance of the treatment methods, this paper describes the various passive treatment systems, their applications and performance data for individual treatment units.

Compact and field portable infrared spectrometers have been increasingly used over the past few years by an exploration industry constantly searching for a technological edge and the ability to more accurately and rapidly assess project areas. In particular, this technology allows large amounts of data to be rapidly collected on-site and sample mineralogy, mineral crystallinity and mineral composition to be quickly assessed. In recent years, short wave infrared (SWIR) reflectance spectroscopy has proved useful in a wide range of geological environments and at various stages of exploration programs, from grass roots reconnaissance through drilling programs and resource evaluation. Unfortunately these data have frequently been analysed and interpreted in isolation using time consuming data analysis techniques removed from the realities of a fast moving exploration industry. This paper presents new analysis techniques which allow these data to be efficiently integrated in the exploration program. Although SWIR data contain a wealth of mineral information it is impractical to use this information in its raw form. A more effective approach involves the extraction of key characteristics of these data (ie mineralogy, mineral composition and crystallinity) as numerical values, and the integration of this ædigital mineralogyÆ with more conventional exploration datasets (eg geochemistry, coordinate data, etc). This paper demonstrates that the integrated analysis of sound geological observations, geochemical, spatial and spectral data can quickly lead to a greater understanding of the nature and distribution of target mineralisation. As a first step, software driven pattern matching routines enable the identification of the major clay mineral species in a series of samples (eg kaolinite, montmorillonite and sericite). This allows the major alteration facies and their spatial distribution to be identified. Quantification of diagnostic absorption feature characteristics then allows more accurate determinations of mineralogy to be made (eg mineral composition and crystallinity). Examples of the application of SWIR analysis for alteration mapping from selected porphyry and epithermal systems from around the Pacific Rim are discussed. The data presented are derived from a variety of locations and sample types including drill core, ridge and spur rock chip samples, soil samples and geochemical pulps. In these large alteration systems, the spectral data can be used to describe and map the distribution of various alteration facies as many of these are characterised by clay and phyllosilicate mineral assemblages and are detected by SWIR analysis (eg smectite, chlorite, biotite, illite, muscovite, kaolinite, dickite, pyrophyllite, alunite, etc). In addition, the ability to evaluate even subtle trends in mineral crystallinity and composition is often vital in these systems when looking for vectors towards higher temperature parts of the system. In addition to detailed evaluation of mineralogy, the integration of digital mineralogy data with geochemical data leads to the ability to describe not only geochemically anomalous intersections or regions but also to recognise associations between subtle changes in mineralogy and target mineralisation. This is often important because understanding these mineralogical associations can lead to more accurate targeting and rapid assessment of the project.

Geophysical borehole logging, which measures various in situ petrophysical parameters, can be used not only for qualitative interpretation such as strata correlation, but also for geotechnical assessment through quantitative data analysis. It can play an important role for safe and productive mining operations. Here we provide various applications of geophysical logs such as the estimation of the strength of intact rock or unconfined (or uniaxial) compressive strength (UCS), automated lithological/geotechnical interpretation, geophysical strata rating and orebody delineation and grade estimation. These derived parameters could provide input to control of geological and geotechnical models. This could assist site geologists and planning and production geotechnical engineers to predict and manage mining conditions on an ongoing basis. Both conventional logs such as density, natural gamma and sonic, and less common logging data such as full waveform sonic and televiewer data are examined for different applications. Although the examples used here are mainly for coal mining applications, but they can be equally applied to hard rock metalliferous mining such as iron ore mining.

The current Queensland Government’s rehabilitation guidelines for post-mining landforms present a hierarchy of preferred outcomes for different areas within the mine site (see Figure 1). Within all areas, restoration of a ‘natural’ ecosystem is clearly prioritised as the preferred end land use, although it is not a mandatory practice. Beyond the official guidelines, there is also an implied preference for renaturalisation echoed in most environmental impact assessments and closure plans (Lamb, Erskine and Fletcher, 2015). In practice, however, ecosystem restoration does not extend to construction of a realistic topographic form, largely rejecting the ‘natural’ aesthetic implied by ecosystem restoration in favour of adopting a functional aesthetic in deference to standard engineering criteria.This presentation argues that the established disconnection between actual and implied landform aesthetics is indicative of a wider problem around end landform planning. It contends that such disconnects are the result of the impact of competing ‘ways of seeing’ (Bradley and Kearney, 2007) the same landscape, and reflect the struggle between, and inclusion of, these differing perspectives within the planning process itself. We propose that recognition of the complexity of landscape perceptions is key to improving post-mining landscape outcomes, and the misalignment between land use values and landscape aesthetics can be addressed by establishing an overarching framework for landscape preferences. As such, we outline the reality of stakeholder landscape preferences, and present a critical response to current planning practices within the life-of-mine (LOM).CITATION:Hine, A and Erskine, P, 2016. Magnetic field studies provide remote sensing of magnetisation distributions and a means to investigate moderately- to strongly-magnetised ore deposits that may be partially or totally buried. However, above-surface magnetic field surveys have limited capability to resolve the detail of magnetisation distributions because of the large separation between the magnetisation and the magnetic sensor. While some of this detail is available from magnetic susceptibility logging within boreholes or from magnetisation studies on recovered core, these measurements are limited to the exact trace of the boreholes. The large disconnect between ground or aeromagnetic surveys and highly-localised borehole sampling can cause problems in developing robust source models from magnetic survey data. The measurement of magnetic field in boreholes has the capacity to at least partially bridge that gap by measuring the magnetic field due to magnetisations proximal to, but not intersected by, the boreholes.CSIRO has developed the world’s first downhole magnetic tensor gradiometer. This instrument measures magnetic field gradients in all directions within a borehole. A prototype instrument has been built and tested as part of phase 1 of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC). The prototype performed well with magnetic pyrrhotite at the DET CRC test site in the Adelaide Hills and at Carpentaria’s Hawsons magnetite deposit south of Broken Hill. Further work is required to reduce the diameter of the probe so that it can operate in NQ holes (it is currently limited to HQ or wider) and to transform it to a continuous logging tool. The borehole tensor gradiometer can be used to investigate the continuity of magnetisation over a distance of several metres to tens of metres away from a borehole intersection and the structural dip of the magnetic body. It can be used to either replace or augment downhole magnetic susceptibility logging. Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

Mines in Queensland must now prepare a Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure (PRC) plan, with the requirement to justify the selection of the post-mining land use (PMLU) for each rehabilitation domain. Given that there are nearly 200 mines who must undertake a comprehensive PMLU assessment, there is a need to develop methods that will minimise the duplication of effort. As part of a broader initiative on innovative post-mining land use planning, this project undertook a regional analysis of the technical suitability of several PMLUs.

This paper proceeds from the premise that process improvement is a key part of the mineral engineer’s role, and one in which he/she can make a significant contribution to shareholder value. It presents four tools to help with process improvement projects. Two are designed for process monitoring, to determine as soon as possible whether there has been a true change in performance: the cumulative sum (cusum) control chart plot with V-mask, and the control chart using a process model. The other two are used for process optimisation: simplex self-directing evolutionary operation (SSDEVOP), and a response surface model developed using a central composite rotatable experimental design (CCRD). These methods are robust, have a rigorous theoretical basis and are easy to implement. They also promote project continuity which increases the chances of success, particularly in fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) operations. Variants are used in other industries, but they are rarely if ever applied in mineral processing to-day for reasons which are unclear. The paper gives examples of the application of each method in concentrators which demonstrate that they have the potential to be useful additions to the mineral engineer’s professional toolbox.CITATION:Napier-Munn, T J, 2014. The Argyle Diamond Mine came on stream late in 1985 as the world's largest diamond producer in terms of carat output. The design of the process plant, including the heavy medium separation (HMS) facility which provides the initial stages for separation of diamonds from gangue, evolved over a lengthy period of feasibility study and site investigation into the final form described in this paper. The commissioning was carefully planned and co-ordinated, and culminated successfully with handover of the plant on schedule and within budget. Over the last five years Du Pont (Australia) Ltd has developed a commercial range of new generation emulsion based explosives concurrently with the development of new explosives-placement systems. The paper outlines Du Pont's emulsion technology and history of product development from the initial emulsions (Tovex E & EL) to emulsion/ANFO blends (Tovex BE) through to the most recent development of Du Pont's SOL emulsion component. The paper also outlines the development of materials handling systems on site to load waterproof bulk explosives from the original pumper trucks through to the multipurpose agitator bowl blending and pumping units at the heart of Du Pont's SOL emulsion system currently available within Australia. The last section deals with some of the more important features of enhanced agitator bowl truck designs and outlines examples of the complete SOL emulsion system and methods of operations currently practiced at specific mines within the Bowen Basin coalfields.

With production at Olympic Dam scheduled to commence in June 1988, it has been necessary to install a complete underground ore handling system capable of removing two million tonnes of material annually from the mine. The system comprises mucking from stope drawpoints, truck haulage to underground storage, primary crushing, conveying and hoisting. On the surface, material is conveyed to stockpiles at the Metallurgical Plant. Mining of the numerous special excavations within the system was incorporated into the mine's ongoing development program prior to the underground construction phase. Utilisation of a decline from the surface enabled versatile construction equipment to operate at the underground sites as well as simplifying the transportation and delivery of construction Materials.

Strata bolting/dowelling reinforcement techniques are being reintroduced into the mines of the National Coal Board. There are strong reasons for the selection of the full hole anchorage principle of bolting and for the development of the wood/resin dowel. There are strong reasons also for the measurement of strata bed separation as the method of assessing the effectiveness of a roof bolting system. There are several designs of bolts. Instruments have been developed for investigation and control purposes. Different drilling and bolting machines have been employed in trial sites. In addition comparative laboratory model work has been conducted on simple non-bolted and bolted systems.

In the past few years an elevated gold price has resulted in the evaluation of many small scale surface gold deposits in Australia typically containing about 2-3 g/t Au. Operators have tended to assume that at the lower end of the grade spectrum only heap leaching is economically possible whereas above some assumed "cut-off" grade, carbon-in-pulp or similar techniques can be considered to have economic advantages.Studies made on a number of these prospects has indicated that this rather arbitary choice of treatment method can be mis-leading.A case study has been prepared assuming a "typical" situation and is presented. The deposit contains three million tonnes of ore assaying 3 g/t Au and is amenable to open pit mining methods. The mine site is remote but accessable and existing infrastructure is minimal. There are no unusual environmental constraints.

From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gippsland Mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695 kg of gold, which at 1980 prices represents a value significantly in excess of $200 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subsequent occupants of the lease produced an additional 160 kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. The Delta two-degree quadrangle is located in west-central Utah, in the eastern Basin and Range physiographic province but near the intersection of the Basin and Range, Rocky Mountain, and Colorado Plateau provinces (Fig. 1). The quadrangle lies in the region of interior drainage that includes western Utah and most of Nevada, and, like the rest of that province, it has an arid climate. This work is part of the United States Geological Survey's ongoing CUSMAP (Conterminous United States Mineral Assessment Program) project in the Delta quadrangle. Trace-element geochemical data presented here includes information from approximately 600 heavy- mineral-concentrate and 2500 rock sample sites from throughout the Delta quadrangle.

In Japan there exists a strong demand for mechanical excavation for tunnelling bacause the blasting method which produces much vibra- tions and noises is restricted in its applica- tion due to the fact that there can be many cases where tunnelling sites are located ad- jacent to residencial areas as a result of Japan's being a thickly inhabited country. Pressing demands for and deep interest in the mechanical excavation method have been shown by the circles concerned with reasons that it produces smooth cutting surface and causes less overcutting of profile as a result of the diffusion of NATM (New Austrian Tunnel- ling Method) in the recent years. This has caused a strong desire of the users to apply the conventional mechanical excavation method that has been used mainly for soft rock cutting also to the field of hard rock cutting. In order to meet such needs of the tunnel- ling industry, further research and development have been continued to have successfully real- ized the Boomtype Tunnelling Machine for Hard Rock.

In 1990, Alcoa of Australia Limited was elected to the Global 500 Roll of Honour of the United Nations Environment Program for the environmental management and rehabilitation of the bauxite mines in Western Australia. This award placed Alcoa in the international best practice category. The story of constant improvement spans more than 20 years from a 'trial and error' start to a strategically focussed and research driven program today. The main driving force has come from within the company, against a set of strong corporate values and a well publicised Vision based on 'excellence through quality'. Along the way public opinion, action group protests, increased legislative controls together with the professional competence of internal and external environmental resources have all played a part in arriving at the level of current environmental management and mine rehabilitation performance. There were numerous lessons learned here during the evolution and maintenance of best practice. These included: I .
