Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. Mining had a very considerable effect on the country's development. The visual evidence remaining is an integral part of New Zealand history. Early mining for manganese and copper in the 1840s was succeeded by alluvial gold rushes. These gave way to hard rock extraction, hydraulic elevation and dredging. Coal mining dating from the 1850s was fairly widespread. Other minerals were obtained on a small scale. Manufacture of mining machinery stimulated industrial engineering enterprises. Schools of mines played a significant part in advancing technical skills and several remain as museums. Surviving mine structures and site relics are part of the industrial heritage signifying the technological and economic development of a small isolated nation. Some of these are described. Identification, recording and preservation where practicable is advocated.

Chemical species distributions in rock sequences can be modelled using Gaussian processes (GPs) to predict the weight percentage between known data points. This method can be improved by dividing the modelled area into regions of different mineralogy. In the context of many iron ore deposits, marker shales give the initial guidance of where these regions may lie. These shales give rise to distinctive peaks in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally identified by hand. A GP method has been developed to automate this task.Once the appropriate boundary has been located on the basis of shale occurrences, chemical assays from exploration drill holes are used to find the exact boundaries of interest. These boundaries divide the drill hole stratigraphy into regions of different mineralogy, each of which display their own distinct correlations between the main elements and oxides (Fe, SiO2 and Al2O3). Iron ore shows a negative correlation between Fe and Al2O3, but in banded iron formation (BIF) there is a positive correlation between these species. Similarly, SiO2 and Al2O3 have a positive correlation in the shales and ore but a negative correlation in the BIF. Correlations obtained within ore-, BIF- and shale-dominated regions are therefore better than those obtained using the entire log and can be used to improve the results obtained when modelling.

In the process of primary copper smelting in flash smelting furnace (FSF), the ratio of iron to silica (Fe/SiO2 mass ratio) primarily determines the slag viscosity and magnetite formation. Viscous slag does not only cause difficulties in daily operation, such as in tapping, it also increases the copper losses to slag. Thus, keeping the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio at the desired level is an important aspect of FSF and slag cleaning furnace (SCF) operation. In this study, the improvement of the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio was conducted in two steps: First, the optimal Fe/SiO2 mass ratio was derived based on thermodynamic data. Based on this analysis, appropriate control limits were determined. Second, this range of favourable Fe/SiO2 mass ratios was implemented into operation by an advice-based control system, which suggests the addition of silica based on the analysis of SCF slag. As this approach was successful, the same advice-based control system principle was adapted for the coke addition to the SCF. After testing the new advice-based control for several months, the production data confirm the predictions by thermodynamics: since the prediction was implemented as an advisor, the copper and magnetite content in SCF slag is significantly reduced and viscous slag is reported less often by operations.

Mining is an intensive resource development industry, where operations are often of relatively short duration and can result in dramatic impacts on the natural environment during the operational period and for many years post mining. An integral component of all mining operations is water û through exploration, resource definition, mine development and operation, rehabilitation and the long-term post-mining land use. Water is a basic requirement in the provision of worker amenities, in drilling, as a means of dust suppression, as a medium for washing or processing the mine product, and as an aid in establishing vegetation on post-mining landforms. Water also plays an important role in mobilising environmental contaminants and is the primary medium for the transport of contaminants off the mine or processing site into the wider environment. It is for this second reason that the mining industry considers water management as a key component of mine management. Cost-effective water management relies on planning that incorporates a total mine system approach commencing prior to exploration and continuing through to rehabilitation and decommissioning. One of the primary considerations that will provide confidence to both government and community at the time of mine closure and lease relinquishment, will be the evidence that any water originating from, or passing through, the mine site is of a quality that will not have any negative impact on the surrounding environs into the future. The role of vegetation in stabilising disturbances to a landscape is well known, as is the recognition of vegetation being a fundamental component of the water cycle through the physiological processes resulting in the transfer of water back to the atmosphere through transpiration. In terms of water management at a mine site, the two crucial issues are the æquantityÆ and æqualityÆ of water that enters a receiving æoff-leaseÆ catchment. In terms of tolerances of the receiving environment, the total load of potential contaminants becomes critical, a reduction in which can be achieved through reduced volumes of water discharged, reduced chemical and physical concentrations of contaminants in that water, and ideally, both. This paper examines the potential role of vegetation in reducing the quantity of water released from a site, and secondly considers vegetation in the role of influencing the quality of that water.

This paper summarises the findings of 27 model-scale bench blasts in magnetic mortar, which were conducted from 2011 to 2014 at the blasting site of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.The aim of the study was the investigation of the influence of blasthole delay times in small-scale bench blasts on the face characteristics and cracking damage created in the surrounding rock, which affects the fragmentation in subsequent rows.The test specimens or blocks, which were produced out of magnetite concrete, were roughly 1:100 in scale to normal bench blasts. The confinement of the testing blocks at the sides and back ensured the similarity to normal bench blasts with regard to the wave transmission into the surrounding rock. The specimen contained three or four rows with five blastholes each and were shot row by row, with virgin (undamaged) material in row 1 and increasingly damaged or preconditioned material in the following rows.The tested delay times varied between 0, 28, 73 and 140 µs, which corresponds to 0, 0.4, 1.0 and 2.0 ms/m of burden.The evaluation of the material properties showed that the use of magnetite concrete eliminated the inhomogeneous behaviour of rock, but some unexpected differences of the individual production cycles were still detected.The characteristics of the bench after each blast was evaluated along three horizontal lines out of a 3D model of the bench face. The tested delay time sequences of the virgin (first row) and single preconditioned blasts (second row) produced more overbreak for longer delays, while the third-row shots resulted in a smoothened surface independent of the chosen delay.The introduced damage after every blast was evaluated by an observation of irregularities on the newly blasted bench face. The visible cracks at the top of the testing blocks were documented and divided into several crack families according to their angle, length and origin. The remaining block was broken out of the blasting site after blasting, cut into several horizontal and vertical slices and dye penetrant spray was used to visualise the cracks created. Some of the detected crack families showed an influence of the delay time. The calculated mean crack density and mean crack intersection density showed that longer delays resulted in a higher degree of damage.The fragmentation results were well reproduced by the basic three-parameter Swebrec function. The observed improvement of fragmentation in the second- and third-row blasts was linked to the preconditioning of the burden for the following row while blasting the actual row. With the exception of the simultaneously initiated blastholes, the blasts showed coarser fragmentation for the shortest delays, while the longest delays generated the finest fragmentation.CITATION:Schimek, P, Ouchterlony, F and Moser, P, 2015. The mining industry maintains a ælove-hateÆ relationship with water. Dewatering, aquifer, water disposal, irrigation, process water, tailings water, run-off water, seepage, leachate and sumps are all terms that are used on a daily basis in the mining industry, highlighting the numerous water usages on site and their associated quality. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2001), each year the mining industry consumes over 530 000 ML of water. The increasing recognition of water as a limited and valuable commodity, and the associated environmental concerns with the management of water disposal to the environment has led the industry into improving on-site water management. Progressively, water balance models and water reuse strategies are being developed, incorporating more sophisticated water treatment processes. By way of example, membrane technologies, once restricted to industries such as the pharmaceutical industry or the drinking water industry, are now entering the mining world with the aim of producing clean water of suitable quality for ore processing or for advanced treatment prior to release to the environment. This paper will provide a review of the threats and opportunities linked to water use and recovery/reuse in the mining industry in Australia. It will open with an overview of current water usage and associated quality for various mineral industries and continue with identifying the threats and limitations associated with the quality of available water. It will then present how newly developed water treatment technologies and assessment tools can be incorporated into the system to enhance the recovery and reuse of water on site, reduce the risks associated with securing long-term water supply and further improve production, environment and safety (health risk control).

The methods used and some of the results obtained from a major geotechnical study of the Ok Tedi mine area, Papua New Guinea, are described. The study was carried out at both regional and local scales and extended over a two-year period. A team of individual engineers and scientists from a variety of disciplines carried out the work. This study may provide a model for other investigations in similar environments.

The push for increasing coal production rates continues to place increasing demands on mine management to safely and effectively control seam gas. Gas drainage strategies applied vary in both effectiveness and form. Methods employed are a function of assessed risk, gas reservoir characteristics, surface and underground access, budgetary constraints and gas utilisation potential. With the aim of establishing and optimising the effectiveness and efficiency of gas drainage systems, Australian coal miners in cooperation with gas management specialists are embracing the use of gas reservoir simulators and gas emission models. This paper discusses the evolution of gas drainage practices in Australian underground coal mines and the role of gas reservoir assessment methods in optimising gas drainage systems and gas production forecasts.

Thiourea has been recognised for a long time as an acid-stable complexant for gold. Generally, the use of thiourea has been shown to exhibit enhanced leaching kinetics compared to cyanide but suffers the disadvantage of excessive reagent consumption. Thiourea leaching is particularly com- patible with the extraction of gold from refractory ores. This is due to the need for an oxidative pretreatment to liberate the gold. Such pretreatments typically result in the production of an acidic residue. The application of novel thiourea leaching technologies to the extraction of gold from a bioleached pyrite concentrate was investigated. The interac- tion of leach variables with thiourea consumption and gold extraction was established. An economic assessment of thiourea leaching was compared with conventional cyanidation. The results indicated that gold leaching of the bioleached residue using thiourea compared very favourably with cyanidation.

Over the last decade computers have become an essential element in assessing the economic feasibility of mining new mineral deposits and in assisting a variety of related support functions. A broad overview is given of the many technical application areas where computers are contributing to the mining industry with reference to work being done on the evaluation of drill hole information, mineral inventory modelling, ore reserve estimation, financial analysis, process simulation, process control, workshop job scheduling, PERT applications, and com- puter aided drafting. In all these areas the computer has greatly reduced the manual effort involved in looking at alternatives. It has had a significant effect in eliminating delays in revising calculations, or rescheduling activities to incorporate new data or cater for changing conditions, while at the same time providing more accurate and prompt information for the management decision making Process.

This paper outlines the aims, objectives and means by which a life of mine land use plan was established for Comalco's bauxite mine at Weipa. Comalco realises the need to strategically plan for future mining activities and still minimise the impact of operations on the natural resources of the region. With this realisation long-term forward planning has been implemented to improve the Company's ability to select future sites for mining, industrial use, agriculture, town expansion and conservation purposes.The knowledge of mineral, water, soil and animal resources has expanded dramatically in the past decade. During 1990 Cornalco purchased Geographic Information System technology which has allowed previously collected resource data to be presented in map form. These maps as part of the Life of Mine Land Use Plan are both information based and strategic which can be efficiently updated. The maps allow a broad audience from engineers, geologists, environmental scientists and site managers to government officers and the general public to comprehensively view and scrutinise the operations.

Tests were conducted in plexiglass and Rockite models to determine if crater blasting could be improved by changes in charge geometry or by alterations to the borehole. Circumferential grooves were placed at various locations in the borehole in an attempt to control the initiation site of the crater. Grooves located at or above the top of the cylindrical charge had no effect on the resulting crater. Grooves placed too low in the borehole were successful in controlling the initiation site but the growth of the fracture system was not sufficient to reach the upper surface. Grooves located at a height of two thirds of the charge length were quite successful in that resulting craters were bigger by at least a factor of six than the normal crater. Testing was conducted in Rockite models to investigate charge geometry. Spherical charges in ungrooved boreholes resulted in crater sizes that were three times larger than those caused by cylindrical charges.

In 2004, the Western Australian Department of Industry and ResourcesÆ Burrup Rock Art Management Committee commissioned a number of independent scientific studies to evaluate the condition of rock art in the Burrup Peninsula near Karratha (Western Australia). These studies are evaluating the physico-chemical aspects of the effect of environmental modification on the visible appearance of the rock art. Because of the cultural significance of the sites, the research approach has been to employ non-destructive testing strategies and work in the field has progressed with respect for the importance of the area. This paper only reports the spectral mineralogy monitoring at each of the sites to evaluate whether changes in mineralogy are observed on rock surfaces. Reflectance spectroscopy is a non-destructive, in situ materials characterisation technique that provides information about the mineralogy. The minerals detected include haematite, kaolinite, chlorite, goethite, gibbsite and manganese oxides. Current results indicate that the surface mineralogy of the rock art has not changed in the last four years.

The George Fisher deposit is a significant sediment hosted silver-leadzinc resource located 2 km north of the Hilton Mine in NW Queensland. The George Fisher feasibility project involved the completion of underground and surface drilling programs to delineate Measured and Indicated Resource which could be converted to an Ore Reserve through mining and commercial studies. The geological information which was collected and used for the feasibility study included a major program of diamond drilling, predominantly from underground sites, but with some drilling also completed from surface. All drillcore was geologically and geotechnically logged, sampled and assayed. Data was also collected from underground cross-cut and drive development which was mapped for rocktype, ore distribution, structure and geotechnical condition. This new geological data, generated during the Pre-Feasibility and Feasibility stages, was combined with results of all previous drilling campaigns in the George Fisher area to produce a comprehensive database on which geological modelling and Resource estimation could be based. To allow fast and accurate collection and utilisation of data from the drilling program, digital collection processes were used where possible. This resulted in rapid data entry into the project database, significantly enhanced data quality, 100 per cent data ownership within the project team and increased productivity levels. Processes used during the project data collection program are described, lessons learned are related and suggestions for ænext timeÆ are listed using the benefit of hindsight.

Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Limited (ADM), manager and operator of the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture (ADMJV) will recruit approximately 400 employees during 1985 to operate the new large-scale, open-cut diamond mine and treatment plant being developed at Argyle, in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. These employees will live in Perth or environs and will commute to work at Argyle via chartered jet aircraft. On site, they will be accommodated in self-contained single person's quarters, with central messing and recreational facilities. Rostering systems have not been finalised, but it is likely employees will rotate through a cycle of 14 days at site and seven-days on leave in Perth. ADM spent three years evaluating residen- tial options before deciding to commute its workforce from Perth. Another 70 senior staff will reside in Kununurra (the nearest established town, 250 km from Argyle) and commute to the mine daily by air.

In this paper, it is shown that the higher the pre-activation concentration of copper ions in pulp, the larger the adsorption amounts of copper ions and xanthate on arsenopyrite surface, and the better the arsenopyrite flotability in strong alkaline medium. On arsenopyrite pre-activated with cupric ions, the xanthate adsorption density in strong alkaline medium is approximately equivalent to that of cupric ions. It is therefore concluded that an amount of copper ions adsorb on arsenopyrite surface first, and then an amount of xanthate can (and only can) adsorb dependently on the surface active sites produced by these adsorbed copper ions on the mineral, so that arsenopyrite is kept rather flotable and is hardly separated from pyrite even in very strong alkaline medium. Selectively wiping out the surface copper active sites on arsenopyrite is the key point of successful separation of pyrite from arsenopyrite. According to this theory, a new 'SZLI' (know-how) method was recommended to satisfactorily deal with the difficult separation.

Almost all the countries of the south-west Pacific and the Australian states have recently completed or have commissioned mineral royalty reviews. The prime reasons for this widespread and consistent action is the desire of the governments of these entities to redress perceived effi- ciency and equity imbalances and to ensure that the revenue raising motive does not override the necessity to maintain mineral exploration and development incentives. Governments are tending to adopt royalty systems comprising a com- bination of base royalty and a profit component. Resource rent royalty and royalty holidays have been introduced and anomalies, such as royalty free gold production, still exist but appear to have uncertain futures. Tasmania ranks as the Australian state with the lowest aggregate royalty levy/production value ratio whilst Papua New Guinea has the highest royalty objective achievement level in the south-west Pacific region.

Byproduct coking is practised in three of the major Australian ironmaking centres, the Newcastle and Whyalla works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. Coking first commenced at Newcastle in 1915 and at Port Kembla in 1938. The installations established at these centres include coal cleaning facilities and com- plete byproduct streams. The Whyalla plant, because of its location is somewhat less extensive, having no coal cleaning plant and a comparatively restricted byproduct section. As new batteries have been built every opportunity has been taken to incorporate modern design features and improved operat- ing techniques. This has included the provision of equipment to reduce atmospheric and water pollution. A marked reduction of markets for byproducts has had serious repercussions on the profitability of this section of the Industry.

Over the past 20 to 30 years statistics as a science has grown in significance. Not a day passes without reference to the latest statistics by the print, audio and audio-visual media. The Northern Territory Government has been part of this growth and like other public and private sector organisations collects a broad range of statistics. The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy participates in the government's statistics collection process. Statistics collected and published by the Department of Mines and Energy include geoscientific; mining and exploration tenure; environmental (e.g. mine site waste water management); production of minerals, oil and gas; mining sector employment; and occupational health and safety. The importance of statistics collection to the Northern Territory Government is discussed in the paper.
