The Australian Mineral Industry's growth in the last two decades is directly related to the skill and experience of its consultants in mining, metallurgy, geology, finance, management, marketing, and engineering. The role of mining consultants needs to be re-examined, so that the quality of the service they deliver will continue to be adequate for the 1990's. One means of this evaluation is by examining Case Studies in the strategies and difficulties of developing contract and entrepreneurial research.

It is well understood that designers and constructors must protect the existing surroundings of tunnel construction, particularly in the selection of excavation methods, ground support and waterproofing systems. However, while this can readily address the existing conditions, the tunnel owner and the designers need to consider the changes that are likely to occur during the life of the tunnel. It is typical for transport infrastructure to have a design life of at least a century. While the effects of constructing the tunnel on its surroundings are a short-term effect, the converse case, the protection of the tunnel, and the need to maintain its integrity, will affect developments over and adjacent to the tunnels beyond the foreseeable future. Decisions made during the design phase have the potential either to facilitate development or to hinder it for the long term.Examples principally from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong show that the provision for future development is addressed in different ways. These have ranged from making no specific provision, putting the onus onto developers to ensure that the tunnels are not affected adversely, to including a loading allowance for future development in the performance specification or contract documents for a tunnel project.These two contrasting approaches have strong points and risks. A highly prescriptive definition of permissible loadings around the tunnel can provide unambiguous guidance for the approving authority and the developer, but runs the risk of being overly conservative to allow for all the envisaged works, while still missing a detrimental combination of effects that theoretically complies with the specified requirements. In contrast, a general requirement to not cause detriment is open to interpretation and potentially difficult negotiations to reach agreement between the tunnel owner/operator and developer and finally the appointed contractor (probably with no contractual relationship with the tunnel owner).In practice, a combination of prescriptive and performance requirements is likely to provide the optimum combination of clarity and flexibility. Physical separation features in almost every mineral processing circuit. The category encompasses a broad range of techniques and technologies including hydrocyclones, gravity concentration methods (including jigs, spirals, centrifugal concentrators, tables, heavy media separators) and thickeners, all of which make use of the inherent density differences between two mediums. It is also possible to include flotation, magnetic separation, and ore sorting in the physical separation category.However, opportunities for enhanced physical separation performance can now go beyond the common practice of optimising unit operations. Improved options exist for feed preparation ahead of the physical separation stage, enabling higher performance and lower cost outcomes for physical separation flow sheets and technologies.The use of new applications in breakage technologies combined with mineral liberation analysis to optimise liberation prior to the physical separation stage provides options for preconcentration and gangue rejection as well as better separation efficiency. The use of low cost gangue rejection and preconcentration can be an intermediate step between mining and processing that allows processing of lower cut-off grades from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill.Optimising flow sheets and technology performance requires detailed understanding of particle size and shape distributions as well as liberation characteristics to suit the particular separation unit, combined with knowledge of the available technologies, their capabilities and the economic impact across the whole mine cycle.CITATION:Gray, A, 2017. As the oxide reserves in an oxide/sulphide deposit are exhausted transition to the treatment of sulphides should be investigated in detail and well before processing the sulphide ore commences. The investigation should be broad based to consider all treatment options and not restricted entirely by the existing process plant treatment method. These options may include cyanidation, flotation, roasting, bacterial leaching or gravity treatment and are chosen on the basis of various testwork responses. Experiences in laboratory testing of sulphides and treatment of sulphides at various operations are discussed. This includes the treatment of copper/gold sulphides, CIP treatment of sulphides and treatment of marcasite ore in a conventional CIP circuit.

The Esperanza deposit is located 120 kin N of Mount Isa, Queensland at approximately lat 19¦20'S, long 139¦22'E on the Camooweal (SE 54-13) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. It is one of several structurally controlled copper ¦ cobalt deposits developed along the Mount Gordon Fault zone and related faults, within the Western Fold Belt of the Mount Isa Inlier (Figure 1). Together with the nearby Mammoth orebodies it forms the basis of the Gunpowder operation of Aberfoyle Limited. Until recently ore was mined from the Mammoth orebodies by open stoping with decline haulage to surface leach pads. Leaching of in situ broken ore (in place) and surface heaps, followed by solvent extraction and electro-winning (SX-EW), produced copper metal on-site. In March 1997, mining was suspended at Mammoth and the focus of the Gunpowder operation switched to development of the Esperanza orebody, which is expected to begin open cut production in mid 1998. SX-EW methods will produce 44 000 tpa of copper from an expanded plant. The pre-mining mineral resource at Esperanza (measured, indicated and inferred) is estimated at 4.6 Mt averaging 7.7 per cent copper.

Attention to the design of facilities for drainage, of both surface water and seepage, made it possible to attain, for a qam impounding residues from a concentrating mill, a more stable sand wall which can eventually be carried to a greater height.EXPERIENCE WITH No. 1 DAMResidue from the lead zinc concentrating mill, which treats the ore from the Rosebery and Hercules Mines, was pumped 3,600 ft. through a 5-in. diameter woodstave pipeline to the site of the dam. It was formerly delivered through a 4-in. steel pipeline.State laws prevent the residue being discharged to waste into the Stitt River. Furthermore, as a pyritic residue it is a potential source of sulphur.Between 1936 and 1956 more than 1,000,000 tons. of residue was paddocked. The run-of-mill product was roughly classified at the dam in a 6-ft. diameter cone classifier and the sand fraction was pumped by a 3-in. pump to the front wall of the dam across a shallow valley. The efficient design of carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plants involves the integration of both process engineering and design engineering.Many recently constructed plants have not recognised the above interrelationship, and as such have incurred higher capital and operating costs than were in reality necessary. This has been compounded in some cases by slavishly following the design of plants where process conditions are different for the ore characteristics in question, thus perpetuating design errors that finally become industry "accepted practice".In the paper that is to be presented the unit operations of crushing, grinding, classification, leaching, adsorption, desorption and electrowinning in C.I.P. plants will be discussed with reference to the integration of process and design engineering.

A research project to better understand the rock mass behaviour and the seismic response has been conducted during the design and construction of the 9215 level at the E-Block sector of the Northern Star Kanowna Belle Mine. The research program was undertaken at a tunnel located 1100 m below the surface with the results applicable to feasibility studies on underground mining projects in highstress conditions, where failure can occur very soon after tunnel construction. Semi-circular excavation shapes coupled with the use of de-stress blasting techniques were designed to monitor the excavation in conditions of very high stress. The ground support was designed considering high energy dissipation ground support schemes (HED) as described by Arcaro et al (2021). The results indicate a decreased rock mass demand due to the change of excavation shape. Also, localised reduction in rock mass stiffness was achieved due to the implementation of de-stress blasting. Finally, increased ground support capacity was gained by the implementation of the high energy dissipation ground support schemes. The Kanowna Belle Mine has significant ore reserves at depths exceeding 1000 m below the surface. The results of this research will be used to optimise the extraction of the remaining E Stoping Block at depths exceeding 1350 m.

The success of any industry depends on the planned integration of the policies and resources of the key components of the Australian economic and political structure - government, industry management, education, research, and the human resources of the industry. The Australian Mineral Industry, like Australia itself, has grown and developed at a rate not foreseen by many of our founding fathers and early industry leaders. Hence, now, as we approach the 21st Century, we need to re-think our approach to the significant new problems that are beginning to face both government and the Mineral Industry. Government initiatives, government information and support services, industry re-structuring, and research and development support, need to be carefully re-evaluated, re-diredted,. and strengthened, so that government, the community, and the Mineral Industry produce and receive the optimum education and research strategies and services. The support of academics and researchers, the development of facilities, and the design of new Courses for the future successful and beneficial exploitation of minerals need particular consideration.

Tasker (1985) has detailed the accepted practices for constructing polygonal blocks of influerrce in the estimation of ore reserves. Further he suggests that users might fall into traps such as omission or overlap when determining the area of influence for each sample point.As an example of these types of errors Tasker (1985) describes under "Coverage ofthe Area" how 25 per cent of the exploration area will not be included in an equiangular triangular grid where hexagonal blocks of influence are used.The introductory suggestion of Tasker (1985) of "incorrect procedure" by Rudenno (1983) (and Armstrong (1983)) reiterated around the Figure 2a of Tasker (1985), is based on the brief description of the polygonal area of influence by Rudenno (1983). That description is not too different from that given by King, McMahon and Bujtor (1982).

Subsurface development requires some geotechnical conditions and challenges. Most of then are related to the compatibility between tunnelling system and surrounded ground conditions, and design criteria. Design criteria usually involve lining pressure and ground control of displacements. In order to fulfil these requirements, geotechnical parameters have to be obtained as well as construction aspects have to be taken into account for predicting the tunnel behaviour. The Brasilia Metro is presented as a case history illustrating the geotechnical conditions and challenges for its implementation. It is 42 km long, including tunnels excavated in collapsible porous soils by the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. The Brasilia porous clay presents some characteristics, which may lead to large deformations due to structural collapse. Empirical methods were calibrated for collapsible porous soils and then applied to predict tunnelling-induced settlements. Settlements due to soil structural collapse modify completely the expected settlement profile, increasing their values from the tunnel crown to the ground surface. Consequently, surface settlement trough volumes were also greater than the ground losses around the tunnel. In this case history, structural collapse of porous soils played an important role and must have been taken into account to predict correctly the settlement trough and profile. Numerical simulation has shown that settlement magnitudes due to structural collapse are strongly dependent on the soil stiffness reduction after collapse and the extent of the collapsible zone.

Ironstone outcrops on the Savage River were discovered by State Government Surveyor C. P. Sprent in 1877. The limonitic outcrops were initially regarded as the surface expressions of pos- sible tin-bearing lodes, the tin deposits at Mt. Bischoff to the east having been found in 1871. By the turn of the century, shafts, adits and trenches had been developed on the deposits in the unsuccessful quest for gold, silver and base metals. The deposits were first reported as a possible source of iron ore by Tasmania Department of Mines (TDM) geologists in 1919. Modern exploration began in 1956 with the area registering the best magnetic response during an aeromagnetic survey of North- western Tasmania by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR). The area had previously been reserved by TDM in anticipation of the lifting of the iron ore embargo. Reconnaissance Geologi- cal mapping (TDM) and grid-based magnetometer surveys (BMR) indicated that resources of iron-bearing material could approach hundreds of millions of tons. Digitally enhanced Landsat MSS images are being used'in delineating the structural and tectonic features in the Arabian Shield as part of a project funded by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) of Saudi Arabia. The delineated features together with statistical modeling and structural analysis are to assist in an improved understanding of the evolution and mineralization of the Arabian Shield. Specific emphasis is to be given to relating the extracted linear features to the location of known mineral occurrences and areas of potential geologic hazards. A number of textural (spatial) and spectral enhancement techniques have been applied, to the MSS data covering selected areas, in selecting the most optimal enhancement product for visually delineating the structural geologic .features.

Precious metal deposits containing fine-grained disseminated or dispersed gold-silver form by reactions between metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids and sedimentary host rocks. Host rock permeability and chemical composition exert a primary influence on the fluid movement necessary for any primary dispersion halos to form around ore bodies, and determine whether a disseminated style orebody itself will even form. Where the mineralized rocks are relatively unfractured the margins of the orebodies exhibit abrupt decreases in gold content, and strong corresponding decreases in the contents of other metals. Primary dispersion patterns of this type are difficult to recognize and commonly are only a few meters (or less) in width. If the host rocks were well shattered and broken before mineralization, remnant amounts of the hydrothermal fluids may be dissipated in fractures lateral to or above the ore zones. This causes geochemical anomalies to form with clays and silt- size silica within the fractures over distances of up to at least 30-50 meters away from the main orebodies. The tendency for large primary dispersion halos not to form around these deposits explains the disappointing results from so many drilling programs where no multi-gram gold-grade material was even found: if large areas and apparent large volumes of rock contain one gram or less gold that likely is the "orebody" and not a halo effect around high grade mineralization.

The eruption 75,000 y ago of the Younger Toba Tuff ignimbrite and associated ash-fall ranks as the greatest known volcanic event of the past million years. The ignimbrite is known to cover 21,000 km2 (it may extend farther under alluvium of the coastal plain) and forms a low-angle depositional shield centered on the Lake Toba caldera. The ignimbrite is largely nonwelded and shows systematic outward decreases in lithic and crystal contents and clast sizes. Coarse lithic lag breccias that occur at places 85 km apart point to two or more vents on a fissure having this length. The extensive associated ash-fall traceable as far as Malaysia and India is evidently a co-ignimbrite ash but could have a phreatomag-matic component. The Lake Toba caldera measures95 x 35 km and is >1 kn deep. It is not a single caldera but comprises several contiguous depressions and grabens diversified by two re-surgent domes. Earlier parts of the caldera are related to at least two earlier ignimbrites including the Older Toba Tuff dated by Chesner at 0.5 Ma. The caldera is elongated parallel to, and is only 25 km from, the great Sumatra strike-slip fault, and it can be considered almost certain that the caldera is in part a kind of pull-apart structure. The ignimbrites are very crystal-rich. There is no reason to think basaltic magma was involved in their emplacement. Together with ash-falls they have a total volume of several thousand cubic kilometers. They can be categorized as originating from partially crystallized granitic magmas that erupted because tectonic pull-apart occurred several times across the pluton. Small rhyolitic lava domes on fault-lines comprise the youngest volcanic products.

The application of biogeochemical methods in mineral exploration in the semi-arid to and environment of Western Australia was investiga- ted in an area near Norseman. The reliability of these methods was evaluated by comparing trace element characteristics of rock, soil and plants in the vicinity of the Pioneer BB pros- pect. The prospect is located in the south- western part of the Pioneer Dome, where granite gneiss core is surrounded by a 'greenstone' sequence of ultrabasic, basic and sedimentary rocks. Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization occurs discontinuously along one of the basic- ultrabasic contacts. Analyses of unweathered and partly weath- ered rock from diamond drill cores show the ultrabasic rock to be highly variable with re- spect to nickel, copper, cobalt, zinc and manga- nese. Samples of weathered bedrock and over- lying soil were analysed both for total trace element contents and for the trace elements associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides. Approximately 30 per cent of the total nickel content of the weathered basic rock is associated with secondary iron and manganese oxides, compared to approximately 15 per cent in the weathered ultrabasic rock. The soil is partly transported but has a residual component sufficient to provide a reli- able indication of the underlying rock chemistry, although the trace element content of the soil is less variable than that of the rock. The increasing demand for iron ore with low concentrations of trace elements, puts increasing pressure on iron ore producers for high-quality material. Understanding the mineralogy, petrography, chemistry, and mineral association of iron ore deposits is becoming increasingly important to provide iron ore products that meet the ever-increasing standards of steel mills. Limited attention has been paid to documenting new orebodies beyond bulk RC drill chip assays and product specification data. Therefore, limited information is known about the spatial distribution of minor and trace elements at the hand specimen scale, and elemental deportment within different ore and gangue minerals. In this study, samples from high-grade microplaty hematite, supergene-enriched martite-goethite and hematite iron ores are examined for their elemental and mineral associations. These samples contain distinctive minor and trace element distributions, with the mapping of deleterious elements (eg Zn, As, Cu) enabling the deportment and abundance within the ore and gangue minerals to be assessed. Results from this study show a diverse range of minor and trace mineralogy that are present in typical iron ore samples, in abundances below the detection limit of routine XRD scans, that host the deleterious elements, including but not limited to, sphalerite (Zn and S), chalcopyrite (Cu and S), xenotime (P and Y), apatite (P and Ca), cryptomelane (K and Mn), barite (Ba and S), alkaline feldspar (K, Al and Si) zircon (Zr and Si) and chromite (Cr and Al). The presence of these minerals and associated deleterious elements, even at low concentrations, has implications for producers, with the ongoing restrictions and tightening of environmental constraints in shipped iron ore products. By understanding the distribution and location of these elements within the iron ore, steps can be considered to maintain increasingly higher quality iron ore supply around the world.

Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013.
