A common problem in the mining industry is that company geologists can operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company (Jones and Moorhead, 2011). This may result in poor knowledge transfer and often priority conflicts with geology, operations and project departments. This problem is amplified by the acquisition of mineralogy capabilities and other metallurgical (met) test work undertaken by many companies in order to solve for complex orebody problems. Met data is often not located and viewed in 3D space so that geologists and engineers can create and work with geometallurgical (geomet) models (Bye, 2006). Visualisation of data in an interactive graphical 3D model provides a bridge enabling met professionals to collaborate with engineers and geologists to provide a common understanding of the relevance of geomet data.In recognition of this problem, Newcrest has undertaken an effective collaboration strategy to improve internal and external engagement through the use of large visualisation displays (Jones, 2009). The displays are underpinned by IT systems and information management practices that recognise the needs of underlying disciplines. Today it is generally understood within Newcrest that this is required to improve decision-making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies has been generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions (IBM, 2008). Water has played a key role in the Pilbara’s 60-year history of iron ore operations. In contrast to many of the current-day mining environments, iron ore mining was initially hosted by geological formations that were typically above the water table. Such mining operations required no dewatering or dewatering at rates that were less than mine and mining township requirements. The challenge for these operations was not pit dewatering but water supply for mining operations and municipal supply for nascent mining towns.The current industry sees new deposit styles being increasingly targeted, including channel iron and Marra Mamba Formation deposits. These deposits are often lower in the landscape and can require extensive dewatering. Furthermore, increased water demand for ore beneficiation has resulted in major programs of water-supply borefield development. Added to this is the emergence of magnetite projects and their significant levels of water use in ore beneficiation.The large volumes of water that are being extracted to support Pilbara iron ore mining is attracting attention. The Western Australian Department of Water has recently commissioned a study to assess the potential use of surplus mine water as a medium- to long-term supply for irrigated agriculture.This paper outlines the changing landscape of water management in Pilbara iron ore operations and explores strategies for maximising mining productivity. In the British coal mining industry, during the last decade, a great deal of environmental monitoring experience was acquired, particularly in the Doncaster Area of the Yorkshire coal- field, which had a long history of spontaneous combustion and gas emission problems. This paper summarises the experience obtained and shows how the introduction and operation of these systems has resulted in improved techniqu- es for fire detection and control. Some of these systems are described in detail with emphasis placed on the uses to which output data are put, and their impact upon management at colliery level. Reference is also made to the problems encountered in the development of such systems and how they were solved. The paper also makes reference to the recent Research and Development work of the NCB's Scientific Department and Mining Res- earch Development Establishment (MRDE), which was directed to the design and application of a range of underground sensors, and so ensured continuing progress in this field. The paper refers briefly to a new comprehensive monitoring unit and an integrated fire detection and data transmitting system which are currently being assessed in the Yorkshire coalfield.

Universities have had a long history in the education of geology graduates, Analysis of this history reveals a record of success, as judged on a world basis. However there have been significant changes in the last 20 years that have impacted on the ability of universities to continue to provide their traditional style of geology education. These changes have increased in the last 10 years. In the teaching side, there has been a change in expectations. Additionally the increasing workload decreases the value of each academic to perform the tasks needed by the new education. In the area of research, the funds provided have continued to decline, in both real and absolute terms, and it is now necessary for universities to seek out funds to pay for their postgraduate research. Additionally, the universities have slipped into the error of what cahn only be termed "academic incest", and research student mobility has decreased to an undesirable level, stifling initiative and new ideas in a number of cases, The only solution is for Government monies to be "directed" - ie that the postgraduate student must leave his or her original university in order to receifve the research stipend/scholarship. On the government front, the government and its agencies have not adequately analysed and recognised the need for the redirection of education and research funds into the needy areas of science and technology, especially those that related to the minerals area.

Many ore deposits have considerable vertical extent which is not always known at the time of commencement of mining. In many of these cases, initial mining is by opencast methods, and as ore reserves are proved to greater depths, the pits are often planned to go deeper than had been originally envisaged. In such cases, surface plants and critical underground facilities such as conveyer tunnels, access ramps, ore passes, hoisting shafts and ventilation shafts are often located much closer to the pit rim and the orebody than is desirable for the deeper mining situation. This usually raises the question of the stability of such underground excavations, which may be critical for the viable longer-term mass underground operation of the mine. In this paper the key considerations in the evaluation of the stability of the overall mining environment for ædeepened minesÆ are defined. Aspects which are dealt with are: open pit stability, shaft stability, dilution, mudrushes and airblasts, and selection of mining method. The necessary stability evaluations are put into the appropriate context by considering two case histories. Critical parameters and considerations which need to be addressed during the evaluation of excavation interaction are also discussed.

The Prominent Hill copper-gold deposit is located approximately 150 km north west of Olympic Dam, on the southern margin of the Mount Woods Inlier in South Australia. Its discovery in November 2001 resulted from the application of a geological model developed from geological, geophysical and petrophysical data pertaining to the Olympic Dam deposit. The discovery has dispelled the notion the Olympic Dam may be unique, and that another deposit like it is unlikely to be found. The Prominent Hill mineralisation is hosted by haematite-matrix hydrothermal breccias, which have suffered extensive iron-sericite-silica alteration and overprinting. Copper, gold, barium, fluorine, uranium, cerium and lanthanum are all intrinsically associated with the hydrothermal iron. Breccias intrude an east-west striking, fault-controlled sedimentary succession, which is flanked to both the south and north by volcanic complexes. Many similarities between Prominent Hill and Olympic Dam are documented including geological setting, mineralogy, breccia styles, and alteration. Differences relate largely to the nature of the immediate host rocks. The similarities and difference provide key data for improving exploration models for this style of iron oxide copper-gold deposit, both within the Gawler Craton as well as globally.

From the ventilation aspect, there is a basic difference between advancing and ezreating longwall layouts. Particular rroblems with retreating, using differing mining methods and layouts include high gas emissions, spontaneous combustion and -radients. There is an acceptable method of crntrolling the environment at the return end a retreating longwall face without the use a multiple heading system. Incorporated in the design is the facility to practice xtensive methane drainage, thus ensuring a ntrol of the rate of methane emission into the main roadways. The geotechnical model is the cornerstone of any mining geotechnical design and as such the confidence level and reliability of the geotechnical model is paramount. The geotechnical model confidence level needs to be commensurate with the level of design that is being applied or study that is being undertaken. The geotechnical model is made up of several components and the reliability of the data underlying these components ultimately determines the reliability of the geotechnical model.Data reliability is linked to the quantity of data collected, the spatial distribution of the data collected, quality of the data collection and the interpretation of the data. In a typical project, there is an opportunity to improve data reliability through the scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility and final design and implementation stages.Currently, very little quantitative guidance exists in the literature on assessing the confidence level of geotechnical studies, although there have been attempts by various authors (Haile, 2004; Haines, Swart and Kruger, 2006; Read and Stacey, 2009; Dunn, Basson and Parrott, 2011) to qualitatively describe what level of geotechnical data is required. Recently a number of authors (Read, 2013; Fillion and Hadjigeorgiou, 2013; Thomas, 2013) have outlined methods that could be applied to assess the reliability of some types of geotechnical data that are used in the development of geotechnical models.This paper briefly discusses some of the factors influencing data reliability and the geotechnical model confidence and some of the tools available.CITATION:Dunn, M J, 2014. ‘Grade Engineering<sub>®</sub> is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans as part of a system-view’ (Walters, 2017). Two of these technologies are directly recoverable through screening stages: Natural Deportment and Induced Deportment. The potential for taking advantage of “Natural Deportment” by size following blasting and crushing has been demonstrated for a range of ore types. Simple and low cost screening can in some cases generate a fine product with improved grade and a lower grade oversize which can be directed to leach or to waste. Where an ore body consists of many different ore types, the traditional approach of blending to metal grade will often add to complexity of treatment, which will reduce the effect of “natural deportment” by size.CITATION: Jokovic, V, Walters, P, Adair, B and Morrison, R, 2018. "Implicit modelling is an approach to spatial modelling in which the distribution of a target variable is described by a unique mathematical function that is derived directly from the underlying data and high-level parametric controls specified by the user. This modelling approach may be applied to discrete variables such as lithology (after converting the discrete codes to numeric values) or to continuous variables such as geochemical grades. This paper discusses the estimation of continuous (grade) variables using implicit modelling.One of the underlying engines of implicit modelling for producing this mathematical function description is the radial basis function (RBF). In essence, the RBF is a weighted sum of functions positioned on each data point. A system of linear equations is solved to derive weights and the coefficients of any underlying drift model coefficients. Once derived, the RBF may be solved for any unsampled point or averaged over any volume to provide an estimate of grade. It is possible, for example, to query the RBF on a regular grid to derive an estimate of block grades. Given the ease of creation of an RBF, and its ability to predict grade, the question arises as to how the grades derived from the solution of an RBF compare with grade estimates derived from conventional geostatistical interpolation methods (eg ordinary kriging (OK)).The purpose of this paper is to describe in lay terms: the basic structure of an RBF the role of parametric choice in the solution of RBFs and how this influences the character of the solution the fundamental similarities and differences between RBFs and conventional geostatistical estimators.Using a high-resolution conditional simulation, we show that in many situations RBF and OK estimates are very similar.CITATION:Stewart, M, de Lacey, J, Hodkiewicz, P F and Lane, R, 2014. Digital photogrammetry is revolutionising the task of geotechnical mapping of jointed rock masses and has greatly increased in popularity and sophistication in recent years. Modern commercially available digital photogrammetry software systems can provide geotechnical practitioners with a user friendly tool for rapid data acquisition. The data can be acquired remotely from large exposure areas, some of which may be otherwise out of reach due to restrictions on time, access or safety.Photogrammetry is a complimentary technology to discrete fracture network (DFN) modelling because it can provide the large, statistically significant, spatially located geotechnical data sets required to produce the most robust results. It also provides the flexibility to selectively map structures at a range of scales, depending on the focus of the DFN modelling.Integration of the interpreted rock structure data derived from photogrammetry with modern DFN modelling methods really advances the rock engineering process. The ability to generate 3D fracture models driven by the statistical structural data and conditioned to the features observed by the photogrammetry yields a synthetic rock mass on which improved design methods can be applied. The generation of multiple equi-probable conditioned DFN models allows the use of probabilistic methods for assessing kinematic stability, rock block size distribution as well as a range of other applications.CITATION:Rogers, S F and Booth, P W, 2014. MERLIN, the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy's corporate geographic information system, provides ready access to all georeferenced data held by the department. Its aim is to provide a consistent, current, statewide coverage of timely information to assist in tenures management, exploration targeting and competing land use decision-making. Initially developed in 1988 and under continual enhancement since then, its functionality is the result of on-going close consultation with a wide range of departmental clients and potential users. A true geographic information system, MERLIN maintains both graphical data with linked textual information on a wide range of features of interest. The proprietary software products Arclnfo and Oracle are used to hold the graphics and attribute information respectively. Access to information is provided by a specially designed graphical user interface programed in-house. Hardcopy output of graphics displays including related attribute data as well as detailed reports of textual information can be retrieved at any departmental office. MERLIN is a network of computer systems which link each of the Department's regional offices and head office in Brisbane. The current state of exploration and mining is maintained by departmental officers processing tenure applications, transactions and dealings directly into the system. Data entered at regional offices are transferred overnight to head office to up-date central records and maintain a currency of data statewide as at the close of business the previous day. Through MERLIN the Department of Minerals and Energy now offers a much streamlined tenures management service as well as access to information about past exploration and mining, Queensland's mineral and energy occurrences and resources, and up-to-date information on the state's geology including maps, boreholes, geophysical surveys and field observations. In the future, this Geographic Information system will be invaluable to the mining industry in the development of mining projects.

Various aspects concerning gold are mentioned below. These have no common theme but suggest points of interest any one of which, if warranted, could lead to development later and elsewhere. 'High level' auriferous gravels The gold deposits of Victoria are commonly classified as being either primary or secondary. Most primary occurrences comprise gold present in quartz reefs, together with other lode-like occurrences in which gold is associated with various sulphides, with or without quartz. Secondary occurrences are derived by physical release of primary gold and subsequent concen- tration of it as a constituent of sediments. Secondary gold deposits may be themselves eroded so leading to third or even fourth generation gold.

Bauxite residue is one of the most important by-products from the alumina industry with no commercial use till now. The utilisation of bauxite residue through pelletising with different lime additions, hydrogen reduction, and smelting has been studied in this work. Three different types of green pellets were made with varying calcite-to-bauxite residue ratio and subsequently sintered at elevated temperatures. The sintered pellets were isothermally reduced at 1000°C under hydrogen gas followed by smelting of the reduced pellets in argon at 1500°C. Smelting of the reduced pellets leads to the recovery of metallic iron and the formation of a leachable calcium aluminate slag. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to characterise the phases and microstructural analysis. The iron produced in the smelting process has a high purity, above 99.5 wt per cent. While the iron content of the slags is quite low, and the slags shows variations of krotite (CaAl2O4), gehlenite (Ca2Al2SiO7), and perovskite (CaTiO3) phases based on the variation of calcite addition. It was found that the more calcite addition in pelletising yields higher percentage of krotite phase as compared to lower calcite-containing pellets. Employing quantitative XRD analysis, the krotite phase fraction was found approximately 85 wt per cent for higher calcite-added pellet, and around 74 wt per cent for lower calcite-added pellet. This paper discusses the challenges, solutions and lessons learnt as tunnelling work continues on the Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement (MMSR) project.The MMSR project is a $220 million dollar project for the Melbourne Water Corporation. It involves the construction of approximately 4.2 km of new sewer from the southern fringe of the CBD through the inner metropolitan suburbs of Port Melbourne and South Melbourne.Of the 4.2 km of sewer currently in construction approximately 2.2 km will be constructed using a 2.95 m diameter Lovat EPB tunnel boring machine (TBM) with approximately 1.9 km of small diameter (300 to 600 mm) reticulation sewers constructed using trenchless techniques.These sewers are being constructed in a dense urban environment, which means that the tunnels and shafts are often in close proximity to buildings and structures. The underground constructionof the sewer is further complicated by the variable geology of the ancient Yarra River delta which includes weathered basalts, the infamous Coode island silt formation and fine loose sands.Some of the key challenges and lessons learnt so far during construction include:· steering and alignment control of the TBM through very soft silt with little residual strength,· development and refinement of a monitoring and alarm system for leaving the machine dormant on a day works only project,· control and measurement of tunnel lining defl ection during ring build and grouting,· prediction and monitoring of surface settlements during tunnel excavation,· improved understanding of the geology and hydrogeology at this previously unchartered area of Melbourne,· consolidation settlement due to dewatering at shafts required careful construction controls, and· ground support and excavation in close proximity to the existing 110 year old sewer which requiredvery detailed risk control measures.

The ready availability of powerful desktop workstations, which combine 3D real-time graphics and processing speed better than that of supercomputers of a few years ago, now allows the cost-effective solution of real world geomechanics and underground mining strength simulations. The inclusion of geotechnical factors such as rock joints and porous flow on strength and stability are discussed together with the range of available deformation and failure models for soil, rock and concrete. This paper describes the capabilities provided by finite element graphics and analysis software for modelling and sequential investigation of both excavation and lining, or rock bolting, construction sequences. Examples of the use of finite element models in mining are also included in the paper, together with a discussion of the required people, software and computer hardware resources required to achieve timely and productive results.

The Truong Son Fold belt in Indochina hosts the significant Sepon gold-copper district (Laos) and the similar gold-basemetal districts of Phuoc Son and Bong Mieu (Vietnam). With over seven years of exploration, Toronto-listed Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc, is one of few foreign companies that have to date made a substantial investment in mineral exploration in Vietnam.Much of this work has been conducted along the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture, on the south-eastern limb of the Truong Son Fold belt on the Vietnamese side of the border with Laos. These programs have produced a significant number of gold prospects at varying stages of exploration development. The Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture is a major Paleozoic subduction zone that extends from northern Laos, through Central Vietnam and out into the South China Sea.It represents a Lower Mesozoic collision zone between the Paleozoic-age Truong Son fold-belt terrain to the north, with the crystalline terrain of the Pre-Cambrian Kontum Block to the south. Since its formation, it has been a locus of deep faulting, continental accretion, intensive intrusive activity and mineralisation. This paper briefly discusses the geological setting, structure, metamorphism, mineralisation, exploration history, and proposed mining development of the Olympus Phuoc Son Gold Project, with particular reference to the Phuoc Son û Tam Ky suture.

The Macquarie Dictionary defines `information' as: knowledge communicated or received concerning some fact or circumstance; (in communicating theory): a quantitative measure of the contents of a message. For mining companies investing in data capture and information processing technology for operations management is a key issue. Beyond producing performance related information that employees can relate to it is being able to deliver that information into the workplace when it is required, to the employees that can utilise it. To be effective the data needs to be received and understood as `information'. The technology is now available and proven to enable `information' to be delivered into the mining workplace adding value to the activities performed by mine employees. The application of computers and information technology in the mining industry has typically been limited to the resource definition and planning stages, accounting and administration and the process plants that treat the ores and minerals. The mining extraction processes that consume expenditure and determine output in a mining operation occur in an environment dominated by unpredictable events and variable conditions. The mining operation has long been regarded as an inexact science conducted in unpredictable circumstances with many independent variables affecting the output and resultant cost of production. Financial accountants keep track of expenditure and management accountants analyse the cost of production usually on a weekly or monthly basis but all this effort can't affect the outcome, that was determined by the real time events and variations of circumstances over a week ago. Such reporting and analysis can result in conclusions being drawn about what improvements can be made and how you might do better next time, but generally the data is not detailed enough, is inaccurate or misrepresents the real issues. The capital investment required for any mining operation is substantial and comparable to other industries such as manufacturing. The performance and utilisation of manufacturing plants is usually closely monitored down to the lowest level of detail. Many modern plants are controlled and optimised using programmable intelligent devices and monitors display real time performance to the operators and prompt them to make informed decisions to maximise production and minimise wastage. Technology suitable for the mining industry is now widely available and has proven to be a reliable and powerful tool for the optimisation of mining operations. This paper focuses on the latest information technology developed by Modular Mining Systems that has been implemented in mining operations worldwide. The benefits reported by the mining companies utilising real time information technology over the past 15 years have generally related to optimisation of truck fleet allocation and material blending. Some mining operations have reported improvements in equipment utilisation of greater than 20 per cent. With the development of real time graphical display screens in the operators cabins the benefits of information delivery can be harnessed to make employees more effective in the workplace.
