The paper introduces the problems encountered in designing open stopes and briefly examines the factors that determine the final stope dimensions achieved after mining is completed. A case study is presented where monitoring of a stope was considered necessary due to the expected formation of a highly stressed crown pillar above the stope. The influence, on the mining approach adopted, of a yielding crown pillar is discussed. Monitoring and numerical modelling were used to develop an understanding of the behaviour of the particular stope as mining progressed. A comparison between the measured displacements and the numerical predictions at an interim stage of mining was carried out to assist in choosing the final sequences involved in completing the stope.

"In sulfide nickel deposits throughout the world, pentlandite and pyrrhotite are commonly found together along with varying amounts of chalcopyrite and platinum group minerals (PGMs). The mafic or ultramafic host silicates associated with the sulfide mineralisation commonly exhibit a complex assemblage of magnesium bearing silicates, many of which themselves contain significant nickel. Four types of ore are proposed, each presenting their own processing challenges. These are: economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE (platinum group element) in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with low pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios  economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with moderate to high pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios uneconomic high pyrrhotite: low tenor deposits low-grade low sulfide, high MgO ± PGE deposits that can sometimes be economically mined and processed.The grades and recoveries of nickel concentrates produced from sulfide ores can be significantly impacted by the ore mineral texture, the nickel tenor of the sulfides, and the polytype of pyrrhotite which may be either hexagonal (non-magnetic) or monoclinic (magnetic). The mineralogy of the silicates is also of great importance, especially the magnesium silicates and those which tend to produce particles which are asbestiform or which affect slurry viscosity. Other magnesium silicates such as serpentine carry nickel in solid solution, limiting the recovery entitlement of nickel by flotation because serpentine is not amenable to sulfide flotation mechanisms. Differences in plant flow sheets and reagent assemblages are required to effectively separate these minerals.Experience from a variety of plant operations and from extensive flow sheet development programs are discussed. Today, FORACO operates over 300 drill rigs in more than 20 countries.The Asia Pacific region of FORACO runs a fleet of 37 late model drilling rigs servicing the diamond drilling, reverse circulation, coal, coal seam gas and hydro drilling sectors.FORACO Australia has extensive experience delivering large diameter coring (LDC) samples to the resource community. In the past three years, the company has been involved in six 8? coring projects in a variety of geographies and geologies, including iron ore, coal and uranium. FORACO has developed proprietary equipment and techniques to deliver cost-effective LDC samples with outstanding core recovery.The FORACO LDC sampling system is hands free, with mechanised rod and corebarrel handing to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries. Sample volumes are six times PQ (the common industry standard for large core samples), with core recoveries consistently above 96 per cent in extremely difficult formations.Eight inch coring is a conventional coring system suited to hole depths up to 150 m. The Bungaroo Valley hosts a concealed Tertiary channel iron deposit (CID) along a 17 km stretch of its length. Bungaroo Valley is approximately 0.5 km wide upstream at its easternmost extent, and 3.5 km wide downstream where it joins the Jimmawarrada Creek. The valley follows the axial trace of an anticline that plunges gently to the southeast, and the CID infills the valley. Mineralisation extends to a depth of 230 m below the surface, and almost the entire deposit occurs below the water table. Bungaroo Valley cuts through the Buckland Hills and is bounded to the north and south by steep scarps capped with the resistant Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. Basement rocks are believed to be mostly Wittenoom Formation shales and dolomites, with Mount McRae Shale and Mount Sylvia Formation also present. Deep, localised depressions appear at the base of the CID sequence towards the north edge of the upstream section of the valley, while downstream the basal CID contact is relatively flat and shallow. In both cases the profile of the CID surface closely mirrors that of the basal contact. The localised depressions seen in the upstream basal CID contact produce significant variations in CID thickness of up to 100 m over short strike distances. This uneven palaeotopography is most likely due to eddying and waterfalls forming within the riverbed prior to CID deposition during a time when the water table was much lower than at present. It may also be associated with possible karsting in an underlying dolomite unit and subsequent syn- or post-depositional collapse of the overlying CID. The irregular basal contact of the Bungaroo CID sequence has implications for mining in terms of pit design and resource accessibility.

The Cadjebut orebody is a MississippiValleyType (MVT) zinc-lead deposit, and is located approximately 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is one of five zinc rich orebodies discovered by BHP Minerals in the region.The participation in the Cadjebut Joint Venture is BHP Minerals limited (Manager), 58 per cent and Billiton Australia Limited, 42 per cent.The mineralisation is contained in gently dipping dolomitised limestone sediments (part of the Lennard Shelf carbonate sequence) with an orebody width of between 60 and 120 m and a strike length of approximately 3 km. The deposit consists of two thin, stratabound shallow dipping orebodies, one overlying the other, to provide discrete but not independent mining areas. The orebody contains approximately 2.1 million tonnes of recoverable ore at an approximate grade of 12 per cent zinc and four per cent Lead.

A simple technique for evaluating the field stress ratio is presented, based on the results of extensometer or convergence tape measure- ments taken in an advancing tunnel. This tech- nique also yields a value for the rock mass modulus, provided Poisson's Ratio is assumed. The results of two case studies are presented illustrating the effectiveness of the method.

PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. "Recent underground coal mine incidents have again raised the issue of: under what circumstanceis it safe for personnel to re-enter the mine? Mine rescue guidelines make recommendations aboutthe limits in terms of the circumstances, lives at risk, no lives at risk and training exercises. Theseare based upon percentages of the upper and lower explosive limits. Many factors infl uencesett ing limits for safe re-entry. These include: the representativeness of the sampling location(s),the rapidity of gett ing an underground sample analysed and the rate of change of the atmospherebeing monitored. Value judgements based upon these parameters will then infl uence the sett ing ofa trigger point based upon per cent explosibility. This raises the question of how the percentage ofthe lower or upper explosive limit is established. It is easy to defi ne this when the sampling pointdata sit on the fresh air limit line. However - what value is used when the sample sits somewherein the body of an explosibility diagram? This paper explores the various options and illustratesvarious pitfalls and problems that are faced in making such a determination. These include howthe data are represented and the assumed knowledge of those doing the interpretation."

The Australian bulk explosives industry has matured significantly over the last five years and it would appear that the rest of the world is following suit. This maturity is characterised by the technical sophistication of modem bulk explosives, an increase in the technical competence of the explosives consumer and a greater openness in the debate on the quality and performance of explosives. The principal mechanism by which these advances have been made is undoubtedly commercial competition in the market place although a new element, technical competition between manufacturers and independent professionals, has and will continue to play an important role in the development of the industry. The relationship between the explosives manufacturer and consumer is necessarily both complementary and competitive. This paper identifies the need for the consumer to take a more prominent role in the critical analysis of the performance of explosives and to use his commercial influence to direct explosives manufacturers at least in the direction required for the future technical development of the industry.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.

The paper describes a system for providing mine management with a continuous indication of the effectivness of longwall coalface powered supports in controlling roof-to-floor convergence. The system comprises on-face instrumentation monitoring convergence and support leg circuit pressures, a means of transmitting the output of that instrumentation to the surface for collection, and software which presents both a condensed analysis for rapid review of the current state, and extended analyses from which remedial action can be recommended if a problem is identified. The results of a field trial are presented showing that meaningful results can be obtained.

The Cambrian structure in the Mt Read Volcanics was produced by four deformational events: obduction of forearc-derived mafic/ultramalic complexes in the early Middle Cambrian, a middle Middle Cambrian extensional phase related to the post-collisional Mt Read volcanism and VHMS mineralisation, Middle Cambrian E-W folding, and Late Cambrian N-S folding and basin inversion. The major phase of VHMS mineralisation in western Tasmania is restricted to the very brief period of extensional tectonics within the middle Middle Cambrian. Within this period a N-S graben was produced with a complex series of transfer zones, largely striking E-W. Most VHMS mineralisation is restricted to the top of massive volcanic successions, with several mines close to Cambrian transfer structures. Many of the transfer structures continued to be active until the Devonian. The later compressional Cambrian events are not significant in localising orc formation. Within the Rosebery mine a complex pattern of minor Cambrian normal faults has a second order control on the distribution of the mineralisation.

One common problem for blasting in iron ore mines with significant weathering is the occurrence of large blocks of hard rock mixed with softer material. This situation causes a problem for blasting design and sometimes produces large boulders of rock that require a secondary blasting, as well as excavation difficulties. To minimise this situation, geophysical techniques were used to identify the hardest material amid the weathered material. To study the problem, seismic, ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity and induced polarisation (IP) methods were used in an intensely weathered Brazilian iron ore deposit. The methods of GPR combined with IP, resistivity and seismic showed to be effective in modelling the contrast among hard, friable materials and soil. The results were used to improve the geological model and create more favourable conditions for the subsequent blast design. The blast design based on geophysical/geological models resulted in significant improvement in the fragmentation of the iron ore. This was achieved by the adoption of a specific drilling pattern for a given geological situation. With the new specialised blasting design the formation of boulders was eliminated.CITATION:Vieira, L and Koppe, J C, 2015. Indigenous brown coals, which provide a readily available primary energy source, have played a significant part in the industrial development of Victoria. The deposits located in the Latrobe Valley compare in extent with other major deposits of brown coal in the world. Smaller but valuable deposits occur at Stradbroke, Gelliondale, Anglesea and Bacchus Marsh. Extensive drilling, aided by geophysical surveys, and detailed analyses of coal samples, have enabled the extent and quality of these Tertiary deposits to be Defined.

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. The response of the instrumentation to changed rock mass conditions is considered against the background of development and production blasting and against the seismic record to assess the viability of downhole Avoca stoping.CITATION:Hills, P B and Walton, R J, 2012. Block modelling is a well-established method for modelling ore reserves as a basis for strategic mine planning and mine development. Off-Earth mining, particularly of asteroids, can benefit from block models; however, the significantly different characteristics of asteroids and their methods of mining require reconsideration of the geometry and annotations of block models. Terrestrial block models consist of rectangular prisms within Euclidean coordinate systems. Their labels and parameters typically include location within a mine-specific coordinate system, x, y and z dimensions, specific gravity, hardness, grades of metals of interest and so on.These data provide an input to mine design and strategic mine planning. Mining asteroids may require different coordinate systems (eg spherical, elliptical or cylindrical, rather that Euclidean) and attributes that vary from Earth-based block models. These include: variable gravitational vectors throughout the block modelrotational moment or accelerationrotation rates. Materials within asteroids may show different isotopic compositions. Asteroid mining has the unique characteristic of a mine being identical with an asteroid. The position of the asteroid/mine in space and its full orbital elements provide critical inputs to mission design and costing. Hence, the block model concept needs to be extended with this metadata. The orbital position and behaviour of the Earth must be included for active mine planning, and increasing automation of mine planning and operations needs to consider terrestrial weather and telecommunications infrastructure. Financial planning requires analysis of the net present value of extraterrestrial mining compared with terrestrial alternatives, so a fully automated mining enterprise should integrate terrestrial and extraterrestrial block models at different scales and resolutions. To date, the scheduling and access design of an underground mine have only been considered as two separate optimisation problems. First, access to the mine is designed and then the scheduling is completed. One drawback of this approach is that the costs of access construction fail to be reflected in the net present value (NPV) calculation. In this paper, designing the access and scheduling its construction are formulated as a single optimisation problem.The underground mine access construction process can be classified according to the number of faces being developed concurrently. An underground mine with a single decline branching at a junction point into two declines is considered. After construction reaches the junction, the two faces of the decline can be constructed sequentially or concurrently.This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for optimally locating a junction point to maximise the NPV where two faces are being developed concurrently. The NPV is defined by taking the locations of orebodies and their values, decline construction costs, decline development rate and discount rate into account. The variation of the NPV and the optimal locations of the junction point for one and two concurrent development faces for a range of discount rates are discussed and compared. "The Lamego mine is an underground gold mine in the Iron Ore Quadrangle in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The mine produces 48 to 50 koz per annum, as part of the larger Cuiabá-Lamego Complex. This combined unit is AngloGold Ashanti’s largest gold producer in the Americas, contributing with 310 to 320 koz per annum.The mine started production in 2009, utilising cut-and-fill mining methods.A mining method change was trialled in 2014, introducing open stope methods. The key benefits proposed from this change are considered to be: improved safety by eliminating re-entry mining methods reduced mining costs/increased productivity from utilising bulk-mining operations.The results from the trial were encouraging, and open stoping participation expanded beyond a trial.Production from open stope areas reached 180 000 t (40 per cent of total run-of-mine; ROM) in 2015. While the change in mining method resulted in higher production rates, it also introduced a critical issue in terms of stope recovery rate.Average underbreak (unplanned loss of ore) in the larger open stopes reached 21 per cent in 2015. To manage this ore loss, a project targeting higher recovery was structured with three primary components: analyse current performance to define contributing factors (design process gaps, operating practices) investigate corrective actions apply corrective actions and maximise team engagement to ensure changes become standard practice.Within six months of commencement, a range of contributing factors had been identified, and the majority of the associated corrective actions implemented, including increased team engagement to ensure changes were not ‘once off’ actions.The outcomes show a clear reduction in underbreak (average ~12 per cent for 2016), with further improvement opportunities identified. The challenging target is now to achieve a further reduction to 10 per cent underbreak as the average for 2017.
