Magnetic susceptibility measurements provide rapid, non-destructive testing of drill core, but cannot directly map magnetite and/or hematite content. Combined magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements provide much more diagnostic information and, with sparse calibration constraints, are able to quantify magnetite and hematite concentrations and potentially map differences in grain size and texture. We have developed a travelling three-component vector magnetometer that can be run alongside core to map its external magnetic field. The logger has been designed to operate in core sheds and at remote drill sites. It is used to rapidly scan a length of core, with each core being scanned in different rotations. The magnetic field contributions from any remanent magnetisation rotates with the core and cause differences between successive measurements, while the field contributions from any induced magnetisations with isotropic magnetic susceptibility remain constant. Deconvolution of the magnetic field data with simultaneous three-channel inversions of the multirotation data separates remanent and induced components. Interpretation of this data provides estimates of the intensities of induced and remanent magnetisations, the orientation of the remanent magnetisations and the ratios of the induced and remanent magnetisation strengths. We expect these magnetisation parameters to correlate with stratigraphy through a banded-iron formation. Furthermore, we anticipate that we will be able to use this information to map zones of oxidation and other changes along the core. The Radio Hill nickel-copper deposit is located 30 km south of Karratha. It is a new discovery in an area where similar mineralization had been previously discovered at Mt. Scholl and Ruth Well. Radio Hill is the first massive Ni-Cu sulphide deposit of economic significance to have been located in the Western Pilbara.Preliminary studies indicate that the sulphide mineralization occurs within gabbros, pyroxenites and peridotites of a basic igneous cumulate layered sequence. Primary sulphides have been subsequently remobilized and concentrated as stringer and massive mineralization. This is tentatively attributed to the intrusion of a further gabbroic body.The deposit appears to be of the gabbroic association type with a Ni:Cu ratio varying from 1:4 in the outer parts of the mineralized envelope to 1:0.9 towards the central zones. In drill core observations, chalcopyrite surrounding pyrrhotite was noted in many instances. Drilling has so far delineated a body developed over a strike length of 600 m and a horizontal width of up to 25 m. The mineralization plunges 20° to the southwest with a southerly dip varying from 75° in the west to about 20° - 30° in the east.The deposit is a leaf-shaped ore zone, plunging southwest from a vertical depth of 17 m in the north to 300 m in the south. The massive sulphides occur as lensoid masses within this zone. A geological resource of up to 2.5 million tonnes at 1.5 per cent Ni and l.4 per cent Cu is indicated.The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite, with significant cobalt, platinum group metals and gold. Tellurides of Pd, Bi and Pb were detected by scanning electron microprobe within the pyrrhotite and other trace metals include Zn and native tin. Massive magnetite is sometimes associated with the massive pyrrhotite intersections.A test on one composite massive sulphide sample showed that pyrrhotite is present mainly as the non-magnetic hexagonal variety and only 10 per cent is present as magnetic monoclinic pyrrhotite.The deposit has no surface expression and its identification was based mainly Oil drilling targets generated by geophysical methods. No secondary minerals have been observed in association with the primary sulphides, even though the deposit is only 17 m below surface in the northern part.

The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) employs the technologies of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The use of backscattered electron images to define phase boundaries produces very high resolution image analysis and subsequently detailed and accurate particle images and data output. The mineralogy, elemental deportment, grain size, liberation characteristics and mineral associations of a large number of samples can be described. The MLA uses a comprehensive set of analysis methods to meet a wide range of applications. The data from ore characteristion projects completed during feasibility studies are important aids for effective plant design. The MLA can be used to establish variation in the mineralogy of an orebody, identify and quantify the deportment of deleterious elements, and provide valuable information to support comminution and flotation test work. In established plants the MLA data is an important component of plant survey work and monthly composite samples. Changes in feed characteristics and/or operating conditions can be monitored and solutions to any deterioration in recovery and grade performance found. The MLA has extensive applications in the minerals industry. Rare and precious metal samples can be accurately measured using high-resolution grey-scale images. Several new measurement techniques have been developed to perform rapid searches of a large number of samples to provide efficient and accurate analyses of fine-grain, low concentrate material. Quantifying the mineral variability in mineral sands operations is essential to maximising grades and recovery. The MLA produces particle-based data on density, mineralogy, size and shape and has developed measurement techniques to provide the elemental quantification required for the characterisation of these deposits. Nickel sulfide ores can be analysed to provide modal mineralogy, elemental deportment and liberation and locking data. The low-grade and variable nickel mineralogy of these deposits makes the use of quantitative mineralogy an essential component of maximising returns. Coarse particle measurements preserve the in situ textures of ores and support flotation and breakage test work for feasibility studies. The deportment of penalty and bonus elements can be quantified and the association and grain-size data can be used to identify potential separation issues.

Mt. Whaleback is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth, the State capital. In this deposit the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers are mining ore reserves totalling 1500 million tonnes of high grade hematite averaging 64.0% Fe. In addition to Mt. Whaleback, 38 ore bodies have so far been identified outside Mt. Whaleback on the Company's remaining 75,000 hectares of lease area. These ore bodies contain major tonnages of iron ore. Extraction at present is planned at a rate of 37 million tonnes per annum at an ore-to-waste ratio of approximately 1 to 1.4. The ore is railed north to Port Hedland on the Indian Ocean where the different products are screened, crushed and blended prior to shipping. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the facilities installed in the Mt. Newman operation to form a background to the sampling techniques employed, describe the precisions which were achieved in experiments conducted February through June, 1976 and also to assess the degree of blending which takes place during the various processes and to put a quantitative measure to the degree of blending. A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by June 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised longwall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

The mostly submerged New Zealand sub-continent has a complex geological history and an active oceanographic regime that provides opportunities and challenges for offshore mineral exploration. Known deposits include polymetallic Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, polymetallic massive sulfides, phosphatic nodules, titanomagnetitie ironsands and placer gold deposits. Currently exploration interest is high with some 3.5 per cent of the EEZ under prospecting permit or application.   Article 76 of the UNCLOS convention allows coastal states to have sovereign rights over areas of the seafloor that are natural prolongations of the landmass that constitute submerged parts of the continental margin as extended continental shelf. New Zealand has substantial areas of elevated ridges and plateaux beyond the 200 M EEZ that form extended continental shelf. New Zealand has nearly completed a ten year, $44.4 M programme to define its outer extended continental shelf. New Zealand will lodge its outer limits of the extended continental shelf with the UN-appointed Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2006, which if accepted, will enclose ~1.8 million km2 beyond the existing EEZ. Ocean Survey 20/20 is a follow-on marine mapping programme to underpin resource exploration and environmental management of the EEZ and extended continental shelf.

A group of stratabound-stratiform Fe-Ba-Zn-Pb-Ag deposits within the La Minita mining district of Michoacan, southwest Mexico have been investigated. The results of the study show that these deposits were generated around submarine hot-springs issuing in a Cretaceous island-arc environment. The exhalative mineralization, which is both epigenetic and syngenetic in character, was developed above fault-systems which constituted the loci of both volcanism and subsequent hydrothermal systems.Fluid inclusion data suggest two hydrothermal events during ore mineralization, one at 240¦C and the other at 161 to 205¦C, with salinities between 2.1 and 12.8 wt.% NaCl equivalent. Stable isotope data support a marine origin for the ore-fluids, as well as, for carbon and sulfur. Strontium isotope data suggest that Sr in the barites was extracted from the volcanics and limestones by circulating seawater. The ore-depositional environment was one of shallow, sub-tropical marine character, where mineralization was in part geochemically controlled by carbonate reefal facies within the volcanic/pyroclastic suite.

This paper describes several sources of external dilution affecting the stope walls during underground sub-level and bench stoping. Factors which control ground behaviour such as the geometry of the openings, the influence of geological discontinuities, stress re-distribution and blasting practices are discussed. Crown stope instability due to stress concentrations induced by changes in the excavation geometry, is discussed and the most efficient ways to sequence blasting within a stope are analysed. Effects of undercutting by blasting, blast damage in the near field and cut-off slot blast designs are analysed. The influence of dynamic loading on the exposed walls as well as the practice of blasting fill passes within stope crowns are discussed.

"Anglo American Thermal Coal conducted a high level study of all of its underground collieriesto determine if there were electrical power saving opportunities at the main fan stations.A systems approach to electrical power savings was used to identify potential savings in the various components of a primary ventilation system. Furthermore, only technological interventions were considered to obtain electrical power savings. From generic technological driven electrical power saving strategies four energy savings strategies were identifi ed, namely potential overall reduction in ventilation volume, improved underground air utilisation, optimisation of fan-set effi ciency and potential fan drift design optimisation. The study indicated the colliery (say Colliery D, Shaft A) that showed most potential in the four technology driven energy savings strategies. A detail study was undertaken at Colliery D, Shaft A to increase the confi dence level and the study confi rmed that up to 45 per cent of the main fan absorbed power can be saved (475 kW) with an estimated capital payback period of 18 months. The study clearly showed that an integrated approach to optimise the entire mine ventilation system has great potential for power saving, and that a clear, well -defi ned methodology will be applicable to similar underground collieries. This paper discusses the background to the study and the process followed to implement the energy savings initiative at Colliery D, Shaft A."

Reliable face support pressure is necessary for shield driven tunnels in cohesionless soils to prevent excessive ground movements. This paper presents experimental work on stability of a tunnel face using transparent soil models aiming to obtain magnitude of tunnel face minimum supporting pressure, failure pattern and extension of failed zone. A model tunnel was preinstalled in transparent soil which was supported at the face by means of water pressure. Tests were performed by reducing supporting pressure until collapse occurred. Model tests were sliced optically with laser sheet and images were captured for every decrement in tunnel supporting pressure. Later, these images were analysed by digital image correlation (DIC) and vector fi elds of incremental displacements were obtained. Values of minimum support pressures were given for different cover/diameter (C/D) ratios. Geometry of the failure zones depicted for different (C/D) values and appeared to be of chimney shape with a limited extension front of the face. A minimum support pressure was achieved with support pressures as low as 10 ± 1 per cent of the effective vertical stress at the tunnel axis. The stability of the tunnel face was related to the coefficient of active earth pressure with C/D ratio having a small effect on the magnitude of required pressure at collapse. In general, results of the study were in agreement with current knowledge of full-scale situations.

Coal washery wastes comprise tailings, finer than 0.5 to 0.1 inn depending on the sophistication of the washery, and coarse reject, typically finer than 50 mm. Subaerial disposal of coal tailings slurry at about 30 per cent solids by mass results in the formation of a delta with an average slope of about 1 in 100, representing one extreme. The ravelling of coarse reject on loose-dumping, results in an angle of repose slope with an angle of about 37" (1 in 1.3), representing the other extreme. The pumped co-disposal of coal tailings and coarse reject results in the formation of an upper delta with an average slope of about to one in ten, between the two extremes. The depositional behaviour of these three waste streams is discussed and compared in this paper. The important depositional and material parameters, and a theoretical description of the processes involved, are also presented. Comparisons are made between the depositional behaviour of the various coal washery waste streams, and natural depositional systems, such as rivers, alluvial fans, and scree slopes.

The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014. Mining of lignite is the largest bulk materials handling activity in Europe. In order to mine this lignite, with an average calorific value of only a third of bituminous coal in an economical way, highly efficient opencast mining technology is mandatory. The total continuous mining of overburden and lignite was introduced more than 60 years ago and was subsequently developed stepwise into the largest mass transport system of the world. In 2011, the Inden Mine, one of three RWE Power mines, stripped 90 Mbcm of overburden to produce 22 Mt of lignite. In total, nearly 100 Mt of Lignite was produced from the three mines of RWE Power in Germany. Beside bucket wheel excavators (BWE), several high-performance in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems, which allow the adoption of continuous mining systems, even for typical shovel and truck (S&T) operations, are available today. RWE Power assists operators considering a change from the S&T to IPCC technology, both in the planning process involving large-scale belt conveyor systems and later with operational know how transfer. In a number of cases, the challenges associated with this system change have been addressed and solved successfully. One key challenge is managing the development of skills for operating the belt conveyor systems efficiently. This paper compares the effectiveness of S&T to different configurations of continuous mining operation for an up to 170 m deep mine with a total annual output of 117 Mbcm. From the mine operatorÆs point-of-view, the quantity and skill level of staffing required for operation and maintenance are discussed in detail. In recent years there has been a trend among mining companies to diversify exploration and development away from the countries that have dominated mining activity for the latter half of this century. With some exceptions, this trend is accelerating and is a function of the recognition that many parts of the world, with no previous exposure to modern exploration, are endowed with considerable mineral potential. In addition coincident with changing political and economic circumstances, many countries have recognised the benefits of attracting international mining investment and have radically changed policies, fiscal and legal regimes so as to encourage exploration and mining. Some countries, however, have not readily accepted mining for cultural or social reasons and have yet to make effective changes to mining legislation. For historical reasons, other countries may have little or no direct experience of western economics, nor may they fully recognise the need for stability and competitive fiscal and legal systems to attract foreign investment. Not all ventures in new countries have been commercial successes and there have been some lamentable and recent lapses from grace. Underground production from the low grade copper orebodies at Mount Lyell in recent years has involved surface subsidence of open cut areas. Relevant structural and lithological features of the geological environment are des- cribed. The highly mechanised underground mining system involves sublevel caving and sub- level open stoping with associated hangingwall cave. Monitoring of subsidence and caving has been made by regular visual inspection and measurement of crack development, and by sur- face profile surveys. These simple techniques have proved adequate in assuring management that ground movement is proceeding normally and safely.

The demand for environmentally friendly commercial explosives has increased globally due to concerns regarding environmentally friendly mining activities. Ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) and bulk emulsion explosives (BEE) are two kinds of civil explosives primarily used in coal and mineral mining in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the leading countries in coal and mineral mining production and export, with abundant resources; therefore, the consumption of civil explosives such as ANFO and BEE is enormous. The selection and evaluation of commercial explosives are mostly done on the commercial and technical side, and no assessment is made based on environmental aspects. This preliminary study evaluates the economic value and environmental burden of greenhouse gas emissions produced by ANFO and BEE and determines which type of explosives is more environmentally friendly. The combination of environmental and economic indicators, eco-efficiency (E/E), was selected to investigate BEE’s economic and environmental performance compared to ANFO. The life cycle of greenhouse gas emissions of BEE and AN was determined using previously available studies and simple calculations. The cost of the product or explosives was used to represent the economic value. The E/E results showed that environmental and economic sustainability could be enhanced using BEE.

Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. Some four hundred million tonnes of low rank sub-bituminous coal occurs in four separ rate lobes at Leigh Creek. These deposits are in a sparsely populated pastoral area remote from industrial centres. Early development was retarded because of high mining and haul- age costs and the availability of other fuels. The search for additional fuels after the second world war led to thorough investigations into the burning characte-,istics of the coal and the discovery of shallow coal suitable for open out mining. The development of the field included the establishment of water supply, improved rail facilities and a town.
