Froth flotation is widely used for the separation of particulate materials in the world. It is a complex process whose operational behaviour in process plants is difficult to predict. A comprehensive phenomenological dynamic flotation model was presented at the 1982 IMPC. This model uniquely linked the particle/bubble interactions and water transport phenomena to the flotation cell hydrodynamics. The model was used as a dynamic framework to analyse and develop process optimisation strategies. New developments in mineralogical characterisation, real time information management systems and data validation simplify the implementation of flotation technologies for mine to mill grade recovery optimisation. With recent developments in software programming, dynamic simulation enables process engineers to develop process alternatives interactively. This paper presents such an implementation of current process analysis tools and an updated froth flotation dynamic model. It demonstrates how this new environment can be used to improve our technological knowledge of flotation, eg alternative bubble/particle attachment and detachment microprocesses can be incorporated. The dynamic flotation model has several manipulated variables (such as feed flow rate, per cent solids, aeration, wash water flow rate, frother flow rate, specific power energy (impeller speed/delta pressure), cell geometry and tails flow rate) and evaluates the dynamic effects of these variables on grade and recovery.

Removal of moisture in steam-fluidized, mainly steam-heated, fluidized beds makes possible significant energy savings over conventional forms of large-scale drying. The systens are described and their applications to brown coal and alumina hydrate are reviewed. In application to brown coal the use of the system to permit meeting diurnal variation in power station output, and the use of triple-effect drying to minimise coal usage and to avoid the necessity of recovering in the turbines the energy in the steam from the last dryer are discussed. To facilitate the rapid adoption of the systems proposed, studies are being made of heat-transfer to dried coal, of moisture equilibrium in pressurized and vacuum systems, of tapered beds as a means of reducing carrier steam and permitting wider size variation, and of the use of carrier solids for drying lump materials.

Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) are established IT technologies that are used extensively in the business environment. This paper discusses the use of these technologies in production environments and beneficiation plants.Assmang’s Khumani mine is an iron ore operation located in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Assmang Limited is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited. This paper presents a case study of a BI solution applied to this plant, which is used by metallurgists, supervisors and all levels of operations and management to extract and analyse data to control and optimise the operation of the plant.The main advantage of adopting an established BI solution is the ease with which production personnel can extract and analyse data. The data is easily presented in familiar spreadsheets and no IT staff or specific training is required to achieve this.The solution adopted at Khumani mine uses a data mart with a multidimensional model (called an online analytical processing (OLAP) cube) acting as the main repository and source of data. The OLAP cube simplifies the access and analysis of plant data.The OLAP cube stores data in a specifically-designed way, which allows extraction and analysis to be performed quickly. It is designed to hold large amounts of data on a long-term basis, which could be for the life of the plant. It also performs automatic aggregations over many dimensions on a background process.A major benefit in adopting such a BI solution is that it allows common BA methods to be applied. This is due to both the efficient long-term storage of data and the availability of standard BA tools. BA tools are now able to perform data mining, predictive analytics, forecasting and other machine-learning algorithms. In late 1984, Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy accepted a proposal to establish a Mineral Heritage Committee. This was to be involved in matters relating to mineral heritage-its recording, its preservation, and the acknowledgement that it can be of use to the mineral industry in the future. The Committee was established to ensure that all of the disciplines of our profession were included and that, so far as possible, all of our country as well as those countries of the Southwest Pacific Basin were represented. Some work has been commenced to bring real- isation of the importance of the heritage of our mineral industry to the forefront of the commu- nity's interest. There is not a state in this country and the Southwest Pacific where the mineral industry has not at various times proved to be the basis of community development.

The need to recover metals from low grade deposits, old tailings, etc., combined with improvements in equipment design and the development of new extractants, has resulted in solvent extraction (SX) metal recovery reaching new importance (Webster & Ferron, 1993). The basic principle of solvent extraction is the use of an equilibrium system in which a metal ion is transferred from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, (Equation 1), (Ritcey, 1984). M + E ME . (1) The organic extractant (E) is usually specific for a certain metal ion (M) and forms a metal complex in the organic phase, leaving the impurities behind in the aqueous phase. To recover the metal, the equilibrium is reversed and the metal ion is transferred back from the organic to another aqueous phase in a process called stripping. The metal is then recovered from the aqueous strip solution, usually by electrowinning.

MineSense Technologies Ltd. is revolutionising grade control at mining operations by installing ShovelSense® sensors on buckets that measure the grade of every load before it is dumped in the truck. This allows the mine to exploit grade variations at a resolution that was not available before, reducing the amount of ore loss to the waste stream and removing waste from material destined for processing. These changes dramatically improve the profitability and sustainability of mining operations. ShovelSense relies on X-ray fluorescence analysis of the rocks as they flow in the bucket and is integrated with fleet management to direct the trucks to the right destination. Lab simulations of ShovelSense measurements on porphyry copper ores show correlations between predictions and lab measurements at 0.98 r-squared with a coefficient of variation of 10 per cent. Visualisation of copper grade predictions in three dimensions shows a reasonable match with the dig plan, but with local changes in the ore-waste contact due to more accurate contact identification, related to blast movement and other mining factors. Correct delineation of these contacts ensures ore trucks are not sent to the waste dump and waste trucks are diverted from the crusher, creating enormous value for the operation and the environment.

For the last 4 years political leaders have found a new subject on which they can safely generalize wihout creating opposition. That sub- ject is commodity prices. Since the four-fold increase in OPEC crude oil prices, public atten- tion has focussed as never before on the subject of commodity prices. To advocate stabilizing com- modity prices is akin to supporting motherhood or peace or better schooling. Everyone gives lip service to the concept that stable commodity prices are desirable. It is easier to state the principle than to achieve it. Prices that are stable in terms of one currency may be clearly unstable in terms of a different currency. This has become a troublesome matter since 1971, when the world's leading trading currencies were set free to float in relation to each other. To illustrate: consider copper prices in the interval between the end of 1974 and the end of 1977. During those 3 years, the copper price in pounds sterling on the London Metal Exchange rose by 25 per cent. During that period, however, in terms of the USA dollar equivalent, the price was unchanged. And during that period, in terms of the German mark equivalent the price shrank by 13 per cent while the Japanese yen equivalent f.11 1k

The permeability coefficient is an essential parameter for the study of seepage flow in fractured rock mass. This paper discusses the feasibility and application value of using readily available RQD (rock quality index) data to estimate mine water inflow and grouting quantity. Firstly, the influence of different fracture frequencies on permeability in a unit area was explored by combining numerical simulation and experiment, and the relationship between fracture frequencies and pressure and flow velocity at the monitoring point in fractured rock mass was obtained. Then, the stochastic function generation program was used to establish the flow analysis model in fractured rock mass to explore the relationship between flow velocity, pressure and analyse the universal law between fracture frequency and permeability. The concepts of fracture width and connectivity are introduced to modify the permeability calculation formula and grouting formula. Finally, based on the on-site grouting water control case study, the rock mass quality index is used to estimate the mine water inflow and the grouting quantity. The results show that it is feasible to estimate the fracture frequency and then calculate the permeability coefficient by RQD. The relationship between fracture frequency and RQD and the relationship between structure surface frequency and permeability follow an exponential function. The calculation results are in good agreement with the field monitoring results, which verifies the rationality of the calculation method. The relationship between the rock mass RQD index and the rock mass permeability established in this paper can be used to invert the mechanical parameters of the rock mass or to evaluate the permeability and safety of the rock mass, which is of great significance to the prediction of mine water inflow and the safety evaluation of water inrush disaster management.

"The website www.economicevaluation.com.au, which had its origins at the Project Evaluation Conference 2009, provides a free way for industry professionals to teach themselves economic evaluation. At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive. The iron ore mining industry is currently going through an adjustment from high to more moderate growth as China’s economy transitions from capital-intensive investment to a more services-oriented economy. We are now witnessing a renewed focus on productivity improvements and cost savings as planned expansions are completed. Despite the scale and importance that the mining industry plays in the global economy, innovation literature is generally more targeted at faster-moving industries with shorter innovation timeframes and lower capital requirements. To fill this gap, VCI set out to understand the state of innovation in the mining industry in 2014. This State of Play report aims to give an objective appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of innovation in mining. The report has three sections covering both the structure and delivery of innovation in mining:Ecosystem – focused on understanding how the iron ore mining innovation ecosystem system works, including the roles of large and small miners, service companies, researchers and governments. Our recommendations focus on what is required for the system to work well and improve the level and quality of innovation in the industry.Strategy – how do companies define their innovation strategy in relation to their corporate strategy? How are these related to prevailing global and industry trends? How do they communicate this with their business? How successful are they? These are among the questions that this section attempts to answer. Our recommendations are pitched at the executive leadership of iron ore mining and service companies.Delivery – focused on how companies develop and deliver innovation, looking at the success of different structural options, leadership and culture, partnerships and the best approaches to change. Early in 1950 a new laboratory was set up to deal with problems in mineragraphy, petrology and metallography. This paper describes the equipment, the organisation and association of the laboratory with the various departments of the company, the work that has been done and future plans.At Mount Isa it was soon realised that the microscope would play a most important role in mineral dressing problems and aiding geological research.As early as 1928, R. J. Colony submitted a petrographic report on Black Star ore for Consolidated Limited; much later, in 1934-5 Dr. Grondijs published for Mount Isa Mines Limited a preliminary study of the Mount Isa orebody, followed by a mineragraphicinvestigation of mill products, and in 1937 a Study of Mount Isa Ores by H. GrondIjs and C. Schouten appeared in Economic Geology, for June-July. Other papers dealing with the petrology and mineragraphy of Mount Isa ores are appended at the end of the paper.The mill research metallurgical staff has endeavoured to incorporate mineragraphy in solving milling problems and determining the effectiveness of laboratory as well as examining minerals sent in by the geological department.For many years the amount of equipment available was limited and much of it was locally made or improvised. An improvised briquetting machine, and grinding and polishing lap gave moderate results in conjunction with an old, but serviceable, Leitz microscope. However, for more detailed and accurate work not possible with improvised equipment, many mineragraphic problems were sent to specialist in.

The mill area of PT Freeport Indonesia is located in a valley surrounded by steep natural slope, characterised by extreme topography with mountains rising to above 4500 m within 100 km from the seashore. The valleys are deeply embedded into the mountainous terrain and bordered by steep natural slopes. Vertical or overhanging lime walls are interrupted by steep vegetated screen sections containing accumulated loose material from weathering processes and ancient rock falls and/or debris flows/avalanches. The climate can be best described as alpine subtropical with an accumulated rainfall of more than 5000 mm per year. Occasional snowfalls and superficial freezing above 4000 m elevation leads to heavy weathering of the superficial rock layers and along open joints and fractures. The mill area is a crucial and strategic infrastructure for the entire mining operation which is best characterised as a high density industrial area with facilities including water tanks, power generators, crusher, and concentrating facilities including office buildings and workshops as well as access tracks to the underground mining blocks. Considering the local topography, the restricted space conditions and the number of technical installations, the facilities are likely to be affected and highly vulnerable to rock fall from the surrounding slopes. In order to minimise the rock fall hazard three rock fence barriers area were constructed at the mill area. The 7.5 rock fence barriers were designed with the maximum capacity of 5000 kJ. These are the largest capacity of rock fall barriers ever constructed in Indonesia. The total length of the barriers for the three locations was 126 m. The biggest challenge of this project was the construction of the barrier at West Gulley, which was constructed at 300 m above ground level. For this site, construction access was undertaken using helicopter. This presentation discusses the design of the mitigation structures as well as the construction approach and stages of the barriers. Please note: This paper is abstract only.

Selective mining played a major role in saving a mine and a communityÆs existence as well as creating a working culture that is the model for all KumbaÆs mines. The successes that resulted from selective mining led to receiving KumbaÆs highest award (it was the Gold Medal Breakthrough project of 2003) as well as the productivity award at the National Productivity Institute award ceremony in 2004. Kumba was established in November 2001 (previously Iscor Mining). The new company identified Mineral Resource Management (MRM) as one of its key drivers and an initiative was launched to define MRM in the Kumba way. Best MRM practices at the Kumba mines were included in the definition. Selective mining was born out of this initiative. One of the key principles of good MRM practice was identified as: æThere must be a balance in the operational processÆ. This principle was applied with great success at Thabazimbi Iron Ore mine in the Limpopo province, South Africa. The emphasis of this paper will be to show how value can be unlocked throughout the whole mining value chain. In the past (up to 2001) the mine went through a number of crisis situations: planned production performances were not reached, the stripping ratio was extremely high with two new pits, the product beds were not of constant quality, slope failures were big risks, flooding could and did cut off half of the ore supply, and restructuring demoralised staff.This paper focuses on: selective mining throughput drivers, and selective mining and its role in achieving this balance.The results were dramatic, with huge improvements in production results, stockpiles, plant yields and product bed specifications. The mine was brought into balance and a self feeding loop was created with positive spin-offs up to this day.

The demand for minerals will grow strongly to satisfy the needs of an increasing world population for materials and energy. The technical problems involved in producing these minerals will be daunting and the engineers who will have the responsibility for designing and controlling the mineral production processes must have a high level of skills. This will place a heavy responsibility on the education system. A small number of large, well equipped university departments dedicated to mineral processing and having a close working relationship with the mineral industry, and an international orientation, will be much better placed to meet the needs than a large number of small ill-equipped departments which find it difficult to remain viable in modem universities. Courses in mineral processing must be designed to meet the scientific and technological needs of industry and full use must be made of innovative educational techniques such as video conferencing in delivering the courses. The concept of a major international network of major mineral processing departments which is designed to make best use of scarce academic resources is important and should be considered by the International Committee of the IMPC.

Politicians and economists talk glibly about the so-called knowledge revolution. The reality is that knowledge is fundamental to economic progress. Consequently there have been many technological revolutions. The global impacts of the invention of the steam engine and the development of the frozen meat industry are well known. Another less publicised technological advance occurred in Central Otago late in the nineteenth century. This was the adaptation of the bucketladder dredge to the mining of placer deposits. A product of over 30 years experimentation and innovation, New Zealand dredging technology was taken to the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco by R H Postlethwaite, a Dunedin based mining engineer. New Zealand-style dredges built by Risdon operated successfully in California, Alaska and the Yukon. Californian engineers assimilated the best features of the New Zealand dredges with American (Bucyrus) designs to produce a standard for the worldwide placer mining industry.

Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. The Hodgkinson Province numerical modelling project aims to develop an improved understanding of the physical conditions that lead to the localisation of goldbearing fluids within known systems and apply this understanding to the prediction of potential new sites of gold mineralisation. The project follows a series of stages from identifying the key parameters required to construct and test simulations through to reverse engineering of known deposits and ultimately applying the conditions identified in the preliminary stages to predictive simulations. Results of the modelling demonstrate strong geometric controls of the localisation of fluids during mineralisation. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The paper focuses on how rock bolts are loaded in different rock masses, as well as in pullout tests. Three analytical models for rock bolts are presented in brief, one for bolts in continuously deformed rock masses, one for bolts in blocky rock masses, and one for bolts in pullout tests. The bolt models are used to interpret measurement data for rock bolts from three sources and to help specify the modes of axial load in the rock bolts. It is found that in continuously deformed rock formations fully coupled rock bolts have only one axial stress peak. The position of the axial stress peak moves towards the far end of the bolts with increasing rock deformation. In blocky rock masses several axial stress peaks may appear in the rock bolt. The position of this kind of axial stress peak does not change during the entire loading process. For rock bolts in pullout tests, decoupling of the interface always occurs first at the loading point. The decoupling front moves towards the far end of the bolt with an increase in the applied pull load.

Western Mining Corporation began shaft sinking operations at it's Foster orebody, south of Kambalda, on the 20th June, 1984. The top levels of the orebody are currently being mined via a decline some 1.5km away.Long term plans require the shaft and decline to combine and produce 400,000 tonnes of nickel ore per annum. Eventually all of the ore produced will be hauled up the shaft.The shaft is 4.5m in diameter and the target depth is 760m. Ground conditions to date suggest there will be no further need for concrete lining beyond the oxidised zone. As such, the sink is an open-shaft development in competent basalt rock. Shaft furniture will be installed on completion of the excavation to the target depth.This paper summarises the experience in the project to date, along with comparisons to conventional shaft sinking methods employed in previous years at Kambalda Nickel Operations.
