Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

On-line monitoring of low rank coal quality during input to a process has the potential to provide benefits through: ò anticipation of coal quality variations prior to utilisation; ò provision of a tool to help determine the influence of coal quality on process behaviour, and ò provide a direct measure of coal quality for pricing. Moisture and ash are the two most significant coal quality parameters for combustion. They determine the energy content which can be derived from the coal and the problems arising from the presence of ash in the process (eg ash fouling, corrosion, erosion, particulate emissions and ash disposal). Extensive pilot-scale testing and full-scale experience has shown that specific coal/ash constituents (eg Na2O/ash ratio, acid-soluble aluminium, silica, sulphur contents, etc) are also important for the behaviour of Latrobe Valley brown coal during combustion, ash formation, deposition and removal of ash in precipitators and furnace ash hoppers. This paper discusses the range of on-line analysis techniques which have been investigated and their application to low rank coal analysis. Preliminary results from a joint SECV/CSIRO project which aims to develop two separate advanced instrument systems are also presented. These systems are based on: ò microwave attenuation and phase shift - for direct determination of moisture content; and ò inelastic neutron scattering - to provide total hydrogen, carbon, chlorine and ash contents, with potential for calculation of moisture content, specific energy, sodium content and Na20/ash ratio using correlations.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

The paper is a general review of practice in design of sub-level open stopes in Northern Rhodesian copper mines and gives examples of some interesting developments during the last five or six years. It discusses the effect of hangingwall subsidence and the methods used to combat rock pressure on working areas.INTRODUCTIONAll producing mines on the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt have large ore reserves and are designed for high rates of production. The three mines (Mufulira, Rhokana Corporation, and Roan Antelope) where sub-level open stoping is used, hoist from 250,000 to over 400,000 short tons of ore a month so that any stoping method used must be adaptable to concentrated' mining. This paper describes a mobile laboratory developed specifically for nickel prospecting, and which was designed to be operated by sub-professional staff in remote areas independently of established laboratories. An atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure was used to determine nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, and copper ID latentIc and sulphIde samples, with a detection limit better than 25 µg/g for all elements. The procedure was applicable to both soil and drill samples and the accuracy of the procedure, which was ±5 per cent relative at the 1,000 µg/g level was sufficient for the preliminary assessment of mineralized samples and the control of drilling operations. The analytical procedure and the means taken to ensure the necessary reproductibility and accuracy are described. One operator can carry out 400 elemental determinations per 8-hr day at an approximate cdst of 6 cents per elemental determination. The results are returned within a single day, a factor which can contribute materially to the efficiency of drilling operations.

Alluvial gold deposits in the area studied are preserved on the valley floor and elevated terraces due to a sequence of glacial/interglacial events during Pleistocene and Recent times. Continued regional uplift has overprinted these events. Prospecting by drilling and bulk sampling has demonstrated a complex alluvial gold resource which is now being mined.

The ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones is an industry standard, and well known methodologies exist for equipment sizing, selection and design. However, the potential to improve the capacity of ball mill circuits by replacing cyclones with screens has been recognised for many years and recently has been successfully realised, thanks to developments in fine screening technology. Proper methodology for equipment sizing and selection is required to capitalise on this opportunity, but there is currently insufficient information and few guidelines available on how to design such a circuit. This paper discusses the differences between ball mill circuits closed with cyclones and with screens. A methodology is described for equipment sizing and selection for a circuit closed with screens, and the laboratory testing requirements are described for low grade base metal ores and magnetite ores. An economic evaluation is also presented for a case study demonstrating the potential benefits of closing a ball mill circuit with screens.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2013. The exposures resulting from development work, following on the discovery of a new shoot of hIgh grade ore at the north end of the Sardine tin mine, during 1952, have provided an unusual opportunity to study the oxidation of a stannite-rich ore. Through the kindness of C. C. Morton, Chief Government Geologist of Queensland, an exactly located suite of specimens representative of the exposures was supplied by J. and W. Reddie. This was later supplemented by a number of specimens culled from a parcel ofrepresentative ore submitted to the Melbourne Ore Dressing Laboratory for testing.The Sardine tin mine, near Ewan, Queensland, has been the outstanding producer of the Kangaroo Hills Mineral Field. Since its discovery in 1918, up to 1952 it has yielded about 1,500 tons of cassiterite concentrates, and about 85 tons of stannite concentrates. The outcrop ore averaged 35% tin oxide, but the grade declined with increasing depth, and by 1930 had fallen to 7% tin oxide. In the northern section of the mine the ore shoots show a downward passage to complex primary s.ulphide ore, containing cassiterite and abundant stannite.The orebodies occur in a series of fissures in a crushed zone about 50 ft. wide in slates and quartzites that have been intruded by granite (Connah, 1952). A quartz porphyry dyke forms the footwall of the original main lode in its southern part, being traced' from the surface to' the No. 4 level (173 ft. vertical depth), and two narrow dolerite dykes were encountered in the workings north of the main...

Waste water reuse from municipal and industrial effluents is becoming increasingly important in many areas around the world. Water scarcity, local regulation and environmental impact are driving many industries like coal and copper mines to reuse the large volume of waste water they produce. For example, the Chinese coal industry generated about 4.2 billion tons of mine waste water in 2005 of which only approximately 30 per cent was reused. Coal energy represents 76.6 per cent of the total energy generated in China in 2007 and most of the coal-fired power plants are located in north-west of China, which is a water stressed area.The selection of mine waste water treatment process is challenging as the effluents typically contains high levels of organic compounds and salinity and their composition can vary significantly. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the integration of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technologies for mine waste water treatment and reuse.In this paper, an overview of the design and performance of ultrafiltration and RO membranes applied for reuse of mine waste water are discussed. A study was carried out in two effluents treatment plants treating copper and coal mine waste water, which are located in Chile and China respectively. The following topics will be discussed to demonstrate the performance of an integrated membrane system in mine waste water reuse: The main challenges from copper mine waste water treatment: high level of chemical oxygen demand (COD); high level of total suspended solids (TSS); high salinity; high concentration of silica, sulfate, iron and other contaminants; and fluctuation of raw water quality. The main challenges from coal mine waste water treatment: high level of total dissolved solids, and waste water quality fluctuation. Design parameters for waste water treatment systems: Selection of pretreatment for dual-membrane system in the copper mine: Clarifier with coagulation and flocculation to remove high TSS; Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) to remove non-settling solids; Media filtration to handle fine solids and particulate organics; Activated Carbon filters (ACF) to remove dissolved organics, colour and odours. Selection of UF and RO membranes and specific design of their recovery, flux, chemical dosage and cleaning regimes. Finally, the performance of UF and RO, including the main fouling factors and efficient cleaning procedures, will be presented and compared to the design parameters to demonstrate the efficiency and performance of the selected integrated membrane systems in each case.

A short account is given of the theory and practice of determining the true U3O8 content of ore samples by the determination of the beta and gamma activities separately, using the method of Eichholz and his associates.It is shown that, despite the variation of sample activity without change in U3O8 content, the true U3O8 value can still be found.Thorium can be determined simultaneously if this element is also present.

Late Cretaceous Blue Spur Conglomerate preserved as isolated remnants at Gabriels Gully, Weatherstones, Forsyth, Waitahuna Gully and Adams Flat was deposited during the intiation and early stages of extensional movement on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. The deposits represent successive courses of a single fluvial system flowing across the Tuapeka Fault zone from the up-thrown (northeast) block. Each course, beginning with the channel at Gabriels Gully, was abandoned as a result of uplift-induced defeated antecedence in favour of a new course farther to the southeast around the southeast-propagating tip of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Schist and quartz in the conglomerate was derived ultimately from schistose rocks northeast of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Caples Terrane greywacke detritus in the middle and upper beds of the conglomerate was probably recycled from pre-existing sedimentary cover on the up-thrown block, following initiation of uplift on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. Most of the gold is derived from vein sources in Otago Schist rocks to the north, and/or associated placers. Hydrothermal veins at Waipori, Hindon, Barewood, and Macraes are the most likely primary sources. There is no evidence to support previous interpretations of deposition by river systems flowing from the southwest, or axially along the Tuapeka Fault zone from northwest to southeast. High gold grades within Blue Spur Conglomerate should have a linear trend more or less similar to the orientation of the host channels, but are likely to drop off rapidly to the southwest. Extensions of the conglomerate-filled channels are unlikely to be preserved, but there is a strong probability that younger placers recycled from the former channels exist.

The Pegmont deposit is a stratiform Pb-Zn sulphide body occurring in a thin, iron-rich metasedimentary unit situated near the top of the Kuridala Formation, a part of the Mary Kathleen Group of the Middle Proterozoic"Eastern Geosyncline" succession of the Mount Isa-Cloncurry district. The deposit appears to have developed in a shallow basin or depression on a sea or lake floor.Detailed chemical and mineralogical study of seven diamond drill cores through the ore horizon shows that in addition to galena and sphalerite the orebody contains a large range of iron-rich silicates and aluminosilicates.Further, five drill cores selected to represent a section from basin centre to basin edge exhibit clear and systematic chemical and mineralogical changes in the ore horizon in both a vertical and, most importantly, ill a lateral sense.Reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the ore horizon as a whole shows this to be a silicate facies of a phosphatic, manganiferous iron formation or, more accurately, of "ironstone" in the sense of James (1966, U.S. Geol. Surv. Prof. Paper 440, chapter W).On the basis of both mineralogy and chemistry this silicate facies may be subdivided into three microfacies according to the dominant iron silicates characteristic of each: a fayalite microfacies, a hornblende-clinopyroxenemicrofacies, and a garnet microfacies. Significant Pb-Zn sulphide concentrations are confined almost entirely to the fayalite microfacies.

NZ Steel's flushing slag typically contains 1.2 per cent V203. Extraction of vanadium from powdered slag using a salt (NaCI or Na2CO3) roast/leach process was investigated. With NaCl, optimum extraction conditions were a charge containing 10 per cent NaCI, roasting in air at 875°C for 4 hours, followed by leaching in dilute H2SO4. Extractions were typically 30-50 per cent. NaCI roasting did not chemically attack the slag; the phase transformations that occurred were due to high temperature oxidation. Slag particle size had a significant effect on extraction.Optimum conditions for extracting vanadium by Na2C03 roasting were 20 per cent Na2CO3 in the charge and roasting in air for 3-4 hours at 850-875°C followed by water leaching.Na2CO3 roasting involved chemical attack that resulted in the formation of perovskite (CaTiO3) and carnegieite (NaAISiO4).The extent of vanadium extraction depended on the amount of Na2CO3 added and the original slag SiO2 content.Compared to the separate roasting treatments, simultaneous treatment with NaCI and Na2CO3 gave lower vanadium extraction, while requiring considerably higher roasting times and temperatures.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. Eco-Efficient Gravity Separation Solutions in India Sustainable development and social responsibility issues are a principal aspect of mineral processing operations around the world. With the need for more environmentally effective technologies, some gravity separation systems have provided eco-efficient mineral processing solutions in places where it is not otherwise viable because of lack of fresh water or for other environmental reasons. Advanced spiral separation technologies developed in Australia offer a cost effective and environmentally viable way to process minerals. In particular, we review recent case studies of spiral plants commissioned in India where environmentally sustainable solutions to design problems included the use of spirals operated with sea water and the use of high capacity (HC) spirals to provide low consumption of energy and materials and a reduced plant footprint. This paper evaluates the performance of various spiral plants in India and how critical environmental issues which affect the overall viability of wet concentrating processes where resolved.
