During more than 100 years continuous mining of the lead-zinc orebody at Broken Hill, an immense amount of geological data has been collected about shear zones related to the orebody. The challenge to current mine geologists is to synthesise and interpret these data sets in a way that is applicable to production demands. Precise knowledge of the locations of major shear zones is important not only for the determination of ground conditions but also to develop an understanding of ore remobilisation along these structures. Traditionally, geological information has been collected from drill core and back and wall mapping underground, and interpreted on sections that are approximately 20 m apart. The recent introduction of MaptekÆs Vulcan software has enabled the shear zones to be modelled in three dimensions. The new three-dimensional shear models have been combined with seismic data from the Southern Cross area. The seismic data is collected from a microseismic monitoring system installed in the Pasminco Southern Operations in August 1996 (Rauert and Tully, 1998). The addition of seismic information to the shear zone models has led to a greater degree of certainty about the shear zone locations and has provided information about shear zones in areas yet to be drilled.

The lunar subsurface, particularly the lava tubes formed by ancient volcanic activity, presents a promising environment for establishing safe and sustainable human habitats on the Moon. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), widely used for excavating tunnels on Earth, offer a potential solution for developing these subsurface spaces. However, the unique lunar conditions, including extreme temperatures, high vacuum, radiation, and the extraordinary strength and abrasiveness of lunar rocks, necessitate significant adaptations to existing TBM technology. This study investigates the feasibility of utilising TBMs for lunar subsurface exploration and base construction, addressing the challenges posed by the harsh lunar environment. We review previous conceptual designs for lunar TBMs, highlighting their strengths and limitations in addressing these challenges. Additionally, we explore innovative excavation methods, such as microwave-assisted rock weakening and undercutting techniques, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of lunar TBM operations. By evaluating the geological characteristics of the lunar crust and analysing the potential of lava tubes as launching points for TBM operations, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the technical requirements and operational considerations for lunar TBM implementation. The findings of this research contribute to the growing body of knowledge on lunar base development and pave the way for future human exploration and utilisation of the Moon’s subsurface resources.

The South Australian mining regulatory framework has adopted a performance based approach to the management of risk. This approach has been in place in South Australia for more than 10 years and is increasingly being implemented in mining jurisdictions in Australia and around the world. Performance based regulation focuses on setting appropriate environmental outcomes to be achieved based on an assessment of the potential impacts associated with the development, operation and closure of mining projects. Measurable compliance criteria, including completion criteria, are set to demonstrate achievement of the outcomes. It is the responsibility of the proponent to propose designs and strategies that will achieve the regulated environmental outcomes and to demonstrate the implementation of their designs and strategies will achieve the outcomes into the future. Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) are significant elements of many major mines and each is unique with site specific factors such a materials to be stored, design, size, location, climate, sensitive receptors, operating history of the facility (i.e. changes to design), site culture and company capability amongst a range of other factors. Consequently a fit-for purpose approach is a key principle of best practice regulation of tailings management as it takes the site specific factors into account in setting appropriate outcomes for mitigating the identified impacts associated with a proposed development. Achievement of those outcomes through fit-for purpose, well designed management strategies would ensure safe, stable and economic storage of tailings in a manner that complies with all legislative requirements and presents negligible public health and safety risks. Tailings storage must also have acceptably low social and environmental impacts, both on and off site, during operation and indefinitely post closure. Achievement of environmental outcomes during operations and at mine completion can then be demonstrated to the regulator and community through public reporting of compliance with measurement criteria which establish the appropriate level of impact for each individual operation. A number of new mining proposals including tailings storage facilities (TSF) have recently been assessed and approved in South Australia. The location, size, design, sensitive receptors, public interest and therefore risk profiles of these TSF’s have varied substantially between these new mining proposals. These considerations were reflected in the assessment of the TSFs and the resulting mining lease conditions of approval including the environmental outcomes to be achieved over the life of the facilities. The Toguraci low sulfidation epithermal gold vein deposits are located 2 km WSW from the Gosowong mine and form part of the Gosowong Goldfield. The goldfield lies within a Neogene magmatic arc on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, East Indonesia. The terrain is moderate to steep, rainforested, and poorly outcropping. Exploration and mining operations are being carried out within the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals Contract of Work (exploration tenement) jointly owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd (82.5 per cent, operator) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (17.5 per cent). First pass exploration of the Gosowong area began late 1992 resulting in the discovery of weakly developed porphyry copper mineralisation (named Bora) at Toguraci in 1993. Early in the evaluation of this porphyry an overprinting epithermal Au/Ag mineralisation event was recognised, however exploration focus remained on the Bora porphyry deposit for some time. The discovery of the nearby Gosowong epithermal gold deposit and the exploration of other prospects in the area further diverted attention and funds from Toguraci. It was not until year 2000 that Toguraci was seriously reevaluated as part of a detailed appraisal of the epithermal gold potential within a 5 km radius of the Gosowong gold mine. A fly-camp based drilling campaign using man-portable rigs was undertaken between August 2000 and March 2002. All exploration at Toguraci was then stopped pending government approvals to mine. These were finally issued in May 2003 and immediately drilling restarted and pre-mine approvals (eg the environmental impact study) were sought and granted. The first Toguraci gold bar was poured in February 2004. Exploration at Toguraci and elsewhere in the Gosowong Goldfield continues today.

With a focus on safe productive tonnes, there has been an ongoing drive to increase the productivity of the mining fleet across BHP Billiton. In response, a team from the Iron Ore business was formed to review all aspects of the end-to-end drill and blast process and to challenge conventional practices that limit production efficiency. As a result of the outcomes of this work, a number of initiatives were identified to improve operational practices that have also delivered significant cost savings.One such initiative was to increase pattern size to a minimum of 1 Mt where practicable, thereby creating ‘megablast’ as a new standard across all mines. To achieve blasts of this size, the team had to overcome the complex problem of integrating wall control into the megablasts.With traditional blasting techniques, the key strategy, which is also historically inefficient but was thought to be integral to having stable, safe walls, was to utilise the trim blasting/modified production blasts technique (ie narrow blasts along the pit wall designed to ‘peel off’ the material while minimising the effects of vibration and charge confinement on wall integrity).Small traditional trim patterns comprise three to four rows of production holes and one or two rows of batter/buffer holes of reduced diameter that require the firing face to be completely exposed before blasting. This is an extremely slow process that requires a lot of resources for very little tonnage while adding additional expense to the final cost per tonne.This paper will show how the megablast approach was developed to control damaging vibration and confinement effects, flyrock and fragmentation while having the largest possible blast that includes wall control. The new practice is based on a theory that involves the initiation point and control row being the second row of holes from the pit wall itself. Adjusted charges in vented batter and buffer holes help to achieve an optimal toe design, and at the same time create a zone of broken ground that absorbs damaging vibrations formed by the attached production blast of any size, whether it is a straight wall or a multi-angled complex pit shell design.Using the new style of blasting has allowed an increase in the size of the patterns from an average of 300 kt to over 1 Mt whilst maintaining pit wall integrity. Case studies will be presented showing drill, charge and tie-in designs with the presentation having additional blast videos, including overall shots of blasts and in-close footage of what happens behind the blast at the crest of the planned catchment berm.The paper will also demonstrate the flow-on effect of using this style of blasting to reduce operational costs associated with other downstream processes, such as the reduced requirements for pattern preparation, an increase in productive digging, reduced maintenance costs and a decrease in fuel burn for equipment.CITATION:Green, B, 2015. The preamble to the mining Act sets out that such Act is to provide for the encouragement and regulation of mining within the State of Queensland. This paper will attempt to follow the legislative path of such aim and in particular to show what part Mining Wardens play in the administration of the Mining Act.The Mining Act empowers the Governor in Council to constitute Mining Districts and Mining Fields and to appoint any duly qualified officer of the Public Service of Queensland to be a Warden or a Mining Registrar. As a matter of practice Stipendiary Magistrates who hold office in the major centre within a Mining District are appointed Wardens and Clerks of the Court are appointed Mining Registrars. In some districts where there is no Stipendiary Magistrate the Clerk of the Court is appointed an Acting Warden with all the powers of a Warden. Every Warden so appointed is a Warden for the whole State.To achieve impartiality Section 74 of the Mining Act provides that a Warden shall not hold or be entitled (directly or indirectly) to the benefits of any share or interest in a mining tenement or mining venture and provides a penalty of $1000 or imprisonment for six months or both, for contravention of such section.

The shape, position and thickness of the cohesive zone have a great influence on the operational performance of the blast furnace. Many researchers have found that the high temperature properties of iron ores determine the formation of the cohesive zone. The results of this work show that sinter of high basicity interacts with lump ores and acid pellets due to the difference in chemical compositions. The softening and melting properties and the primary slag formation behaviours in the cohesive zone are improved by the high temperature interactions. The high temperature interaction is mainly influenced by the chemical compositions, porosity, interfaces and so on. Although the softening and melting properties and primary slag formation behaviours of lump ore A (a typical limonite lump ore from Australia) is the poorest of the iron ores studied, the high temperature properties of integrated burden A (consisting of sinter and lump ore A) is no worse than the other integrated burdens due to the high interaction between the sinter and lump ore A. An important part of planning for the rehabilitation of uranium mine sites is the ability to assess the geomorphic stability of the final landform, over time frames ranging from decades to millenia. Depending on the environmental conditions, erosion features such as gullies may incise into containment structures, potentially leading to the exposure and transport of encapsulated radioactive material. Further, erosion may lead to increased sediment loads and the transport of other mine-related contaminants off-site and into downstream waterways. While erosion may be monitored and assessed over the short term (years to decades), the longer-term behaviour (centuries to millennia) of such landscapes is not within any meaningful human management time frame. Landscape evolution models (LEMs) can provide information on soil erosion rates at decadal or centennial scales over large spatial scales, and evaluate the sensitivity of these processes to environmental changes. However, an important issue associated with the use of models is the ability to assess the reliability and accuracy of the model. In this paper, the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM is tested for its ability to predict soil erosion from a series of 30 m × 30 m experimental plots specifically constructed for this purpose on a trial rehabilitated landform at the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory, Australia. Model predictions of bedload and suspended sediment loads from the erosion plots were compared with field measured observations collected over four wet seasons from the trial landform. Once calibrated for the specific site hydrological conditions, the predicted sediment yield – specifically, bedload – demonstrated an excellent correspondence with the field data. However, longer-term simulations of ten years identified an exhaustion effect in sediment yield from the landform. These latter results indicate that a weathering function needs to be incorporated into CAESAR-Lisflood to ensure confidence that the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM will be able to correctly predict the long-term evolution of a rehabilitated landform once it has been?constructed.CITATION:Lowry, J,?Saynor, M,?Erskine, W, Coulthard, T and Hancock, G, 2014. This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.

Human ventures into space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises – in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars. This research examines the role of off-Earth mining in a growing space economy. In this investigation, the term ‘mining’ is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water and other in situ resources. As the off-Earth mining initiative could be the engine that drives the space economy, it would be useful to understand what off-Earth mining market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements are studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars colony. Since sintered ore is the primary source for producing molten iron in the blast furnace process, maintaining stable quality despite the utilisation of low-grade iron ore is crucial. However, conventional analysis methods, such as chemical composition, ore size distribution and types of iron ore, have limitations in developing the utilisation of new low-grade iron ore and predicting sintered ore properties. Sintered ores are formed through a complex melting process of granule particles consisting of iron ore, flux and fuel. Consequently, it has been investigated that analysis methods which apply the reactive properties of iron ore to predict sintered ore characteristics. In this study, we estimated the properties of iron ore by simulating the assimilation process of coarse ore, which influences the bonding strength of sintered ores and quantifying the degree of assimilation reaction. Pseudo particles were formed by granulating coarse ore (1–3 mm) with adhering fines, which act as primary melts and sintered at 1623 K. The bonding strength of individual sintered ores, formed from 11 different types of iron ore, was measured using a simplified Tumbler Index (TI) test and each value was indexed as the Iron ore Reactivity Index (IRI). By investigating the relationship between the degree of assimilation depending on iron ore properties and the characteristics of sintered ore, we demonstrated that sintered ores formed from more reactive iron ore exhibited stronger bonding strength. Moreover, when blending conditions resulted in a higher Iron Blending ore Reactivity Index (IBRI), the physical properties of sintered ore improved. The development of this analysis method is expected to not only enable careful consideration of iron ore usability but also allow for the advance prediction of sintered ore qualities by deriving the IBRI.

In April 2003 plant upgrades in the æLow GradeÆ Cadia Hill circuit were undertaken in order to improve concentrate quality and metal recoveries from the flotation circuit. The major changes involved: circuit reconfiguration to allow all concentrates to be reground to less than 38 ¦m prior to final cleaning; increasing ball charge in the regrind mill to fully utilise all of the installed power; desliming of the cleaner scavenger concentrate to improve the circuit water balance; and the inclusion of a gravity concentrator in the regrind circuit to recover more free gold to bullion.Once the flotation circuit had stabilised under the new operating conditions concentrate launder modifications and increased froth crowding on the scavenger flotation cells permitted the introduction of stronger collectors without compromising concentrate quality or circuit stability.Twelve months on, the copper concentrate grade has increased by two per cent and metal recoveries increased by three per cent and seven per cent for copper and gold respectively. The project capital outlay of approximately $2.0 million has been repaid in less than three months. This paper will review the project from the design, construction and commissioning perspective as well as the subsequent debottlenecking exercise that was required to eventually yield the full benefits of this upgrade.

Carbon rich graphite deposits found in Sri Lanka are of inorganic origin and they occur as narrow steeply dipping veins. The vein width of these deposits varies from a few centimetres to metres, with an average vein thickness of 1 m. It is believed that the carbon rich fluid intruded into fracture zones under high pressure and the temperature has crystallised into graphite. This process has also generated many minuscule graphite veins centred on main mineralisation, which has reduced the host rock overall rock mass rating. These discontinuities could also be considered as joints with graphite infill. Graphite mining at Bogala Mines, Sri Lanka is a unique example of narrow vein mining faced with numerous wall stability issues resulting from weak graphite infilled joints.The Bogala vein type graphite orebody has an average vein width of 1 m. Overhand cut-and-fill mining method is used for stoping. The stope consists of two boundary winzes for material handling, access and ventilation. Mining is done on the strike of the vein and the average mining slice height is 2 m. A void to the height of one mined slice is left below the mining level during mining. Waste rock resulting from vein blasting and mine development is dropped into this void as fill rock. Any void height left greater than a single slice height will increase stresses in the stoping zone. This will increase formation of rock blocks and their effective separation from wall rocks. Split miniscule veins occurring around main mineralisation intensifies rock block formation in an environment of mining induced stress release. Consequently, any rock blocks sliding into stopes on graphite infilled joints will behave under constant normal stiffness (CNS) conditions and their shear strength will converge rapidly towards remoulded shear strength of graphite alone. Unlike with general infill deposited in joints, graphite has a very low friction angle and with its slippery nature, a small thickness may affect in great deal to reduce joint shear strength.In addition to immediate filling of excavated voids, controlled vein blasting and spot bolting have improved mine safety. Furthermore, rock bolts connected to each other through iron plates and anchored to anchor bolts installed in non-fractured solid rock are practiced to stabilise rock falls and wedge failures in narrow vein graphite mining. BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

"All underground coal mines in Australia are required to develop a Spontaneous CombustionManagement Plan (SCMP). The New South Wales Government has developed a guideline (MDG1006) to assist operations to comply with this requirement. A reference document is alsosupplied with the guideline that describes the type of information that is needed for input to theplan, including identifying possible tests that can be used for propensity assessment. However,there is no clear indication of what program of sampling and testing is suffi cient to provide adefi nitive assessment of spontaneous combustion propensity prior to and during mining. This paper reviews the existing methods available for quantifying spontaneous combustion propensity and discusses the sampling requirements that are needed from exploration to mining. A new, more defi nitive method of spontaneous combustion testing is also presented that benchmarks coal self-heating performance from mine ambient temperature to thermal runaway. Examples of the eff ectiveness of this new test method for identifying and quantifying reactive pyrite in coal as well as quantifying the diff erence between dry and wet season conditions are provided in the paper."

The Mogalakwena Platinum Mine in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex is Anglo American PlatinumÆs only open cast operation exploiting the Platreef. The Platreef, which extends along the basal contact of the Bushveld Complex, is geologically and mineralogically a much more complex orebody than the Merensky and UG-2 reefs. Changes in the footwall and the genesis of the Platreef translate into a number of rock types being present. These rock types vary in hardness and recovery potential and present challenges to metallurgical staff trying to optimise the concentrator. A true understanding of the implications of treating these rock types is required if the maximum value from this orebody is to be obtained.In order to more accurately forecast production and incorporate ore variation in the mine plan and comminution and flotation circuits, a geometallurgical approach to managing the operation has been used and is being further developed.CITATION:Schouwstra, R, De Vaux, D, Muzondo, T and Prins, C, 2013. Bentonites and fuller's earths from seven localities in N.S.W. have been analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties and areas for future prospecting have been indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe rapid expansion of Australian industry in the postwar years has been accompanied by an ever increasing demand for fuller's earth and bentonite, but in New South Wales at least the demand has been met principally by imports. However, some local and generally inferior active earths have been won to blend with imported materials to reduce costs. The important discovery of the widespread distribution of bentonite clays in the Northern Coal Measures, made recently by Grim (Booker, 1956), has givenimpetus to the further search for material comparable in quality to the imported active earths.Bentonite may be defined as a highly plastic clay, generally possessing swelling properties, composed essentially of montmorillonite and derived from the alteration of volcanic ash. Fuller's earth refers to any clay which, with or without chemical treatment, is capable of decolourizing mineral or vegetable oils and is, therefore of economic value. This paper will address this question from the point of view of a drill and blast engineer or researcher working in open cut and underground mining operations. The paper will establish a common set of reference standards for high-speed imaging and data capture, which engineers and researchers can apply when deciding which type of imaging technology is appropriate. It will present an overview of current image analysis technologies and practices in use across a range of appropriate scientific fields and draw lines of commonality of approach between these fields and the field of mining and blasting applications analysis and research. In addition, the paper will examine the different technologies from an image quality and data stream reference point, ease of operation, cost, and reliability parameters. Finally, this paper will present an argument for the hybridisation of established and new technologies which could provide a more beneficial approach to the use of imaging as a tool of quality control, research and analysis in the mining based industries. This will include a novel approach to digital high-speed imaging and data analysis in the field, which should deliver high-quality images and data analysis in a time frame that is more appropriate to the need for immediate action, analysis and problem solving.
