The main access decline at Carrapateena mine was excavated through two different underground aquifers. In these areas of decline, pressurised water finds the path of least resistance through the rock and into the excavation. In some locations the ground water would upwell underneath the roadway resulting in rapid deterioration of the running surface. The deterioration of the road was so rapid that the two areas of decline required significant roadworks every single shift or it would become impassable by mine traffic. With a full fleet of underground trucks hauling to the surface, managing these sections of roadway was impractical and unproductive. The site team resolved this issue by installing Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) to the affected sections of decline. RCC is a specialist concrete product that is delivered to the site near dry and is installed using a grader and roller similar to road base. This product can be installed quickly and be trafficked within hours of installation, making it ideal for mines with single access declines and unfavourable road conditions. RCC roadways were successfully installed at Carrapateena mine in conjunction with under-road drainage. These roadways have proved to be a very effective solution which requires minimal maintenance and are resistant to water ingress from the aquifer. This paper discusses the technical aspects of the RCC, as well as the practical implementation of the solution as a whole.

The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

The first record of coal discovery in Australia dates back to 1791 when escaping convicts found coal in the banks of a creek just south of Newcastle. Development in the Newcastle Coalfield was the sole source of supply for the colony and for export until the 1850s when mines were established in the Southern & Western Coalfields. The important Hunter Coalfield was not discovered until 1873 when coal was found at Rixs Creek near Singleton: The first exploration drillholes were commenced in 1799 using drilling equipment obtained by Sir Joseph Banks. From 1820 to 1850 several famous geologists (naturalists), including the Rev W. B. Clarke, J. D. Dana and Strzelecki, wrote reports on the coal measures in New South Wales. The first Government Geo- logist, Samuel Stutchbury, was appointed in 1850. The major coal deposits of the State are contained in Permian Coal Measures in the Sydney-Gunnedah and Oaklands Basins. Coal quality ranges from high volatile, high moisture thermal coal at Oaklands to low volatile hard coking coal in the Southern Coalfield. Most coalfields can provide a range of steaming and coking coals.

The Graham Farmer Freeway Project in Perth, Western Australia, is the largest urban infrastructure project ever carried out in the State. At a project cost of over $360 million, it also ranks as one of the largest in Australia and is even large by world class standards. The project provides a much needed east-west freeway bypass around the CBD of Perth, linking the Great Eastern Highway in the east with the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeway system in the west. The Bypass will have 6.5 kilometres of freeway, a major bridge over the Swan River, several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses, dual use paths, interchanges and flyover bridges and a rail tunnel. The whole project is being carried out over a four-year time frame, due to be complete and open to traffic in June 2000. The project has been divided into two stages, with Stage 1 including the 1.63 kilometre long Northbridge Tunnel, the subject of this paper.

Global cement production accounts for about five per cent of man-made CO2 emissions (WBCSD, 2002). Such operating practices will increasingly be considered unsustainable, unless significant reductions in environmental impact can be realised by the industry.Slag is a high volume waste product from ironmaking, with about 300 kg of slag being produced per ton of iron. Critically, one ton of slag waste, if used as a replacement feedstock for Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), can prevent around one ton of emitted CO2 since no calcining is required. Slag cement blends can also show superior properties compared to OPC, such as lower heats of hydration and higher late strengths, but more development is needed to overcome their low early strengths. Rapid quenching of molten slag is required to produce æhydraulically-activeÆ binder when reacting with OPC; but water quenching can also require between five to ten tons of water per ton of slag at the plant. æDryÆ granulation (atomisation) is emerging as an alternative technology, the resulting solid product does not require drying, and possibilities exist for recovering heat energy from the hot slag.CSIRO Minerals has well-developed skills and equipment in pilot-scale pyrometallurgical treatment, and granulation of molten slag, including traditional wet, and also dry methods. Techno-economic desktop studies can also be used to help quantify factors such as value-adding of treated waste products, potential reductions in CO2 emissions and carbon credits, reductions in water consumption, and the possible decreased energy costs associated with fine grinding of dry slag granulate.The authors will present preliminary results from slag atomisation/dry granulation testwork (0.5 - 2.5 kg scale) and associated modelling studies, conducted using a æsyntheticÆ and industrial ironmaking slag. Outcomes from a techno-economic study on production of cement utilising wet or dry atomised slag granulate will also be discussed in detail.

The GRE46 Underground Project lies beneath the environmentally unique and culturally endowed shore of Lake Cowal. The ore body is open both along strike and at depth and is currently defined to a strike length of 1.5km and depth of 800m. The Warraga exploration decline commenced in March 2019 and represents the first stage of the Project, which is expected to underpin production at Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) for a period exceeding 10 years. Mining operations at Cowal commenced in 2005, following a period of over 20 years of exploration and permitting. In 2015 Evolution Mining (Cowal) Pty Limited (Evolution) acquired the operation from Barrick Gold Ltd (“Barrick”). Barrick had a life of mine plan that anticipated a cessation of operations in 2024 at a processing rate not exceeding 7.5 Mtpa. Evolution have grown the regional endowment considerably and have a currently approved mine life out to 2032 with a currently approved maximum processing rate of 9.8 Mtpa. This paper examines the history, current status and future path of one part of that plan, the GRE-46 Underground Project. Topics for discussion include discovery, Mineral Resource growth under different ownership philosophies, planning, permitting and commissioning of an exploration decline and bulk sampling project, and integration with the possible future mine. Environmental sensitivities affecting regulatory approvals, timeframes, technical challenges, opportunities and solutions are discussed, along with the path required to fast-track production from the existing 14Mt, 1.4Moz Mineral Resource while complying with the requirements of modern, responsible project development stewardship.

Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. In gold mining in Australia, the subsampling tool is usually a cone splitter.Other sources of error, including delimitation error and bias (systematic error) in the subsampler are often assumed to be negligible or ignored for being too difficult to QC.This paper describes actual sampling errors and error mitigation based on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of surface and underground reverse circulation drill sampling at a high-nugget gold mine at Sunrise Dam, Western Australia.CITATION:Carswell, J T and Sutton, K, 2014. The procurement process for underground construction contracts, in particular those contacts involving tunnel boring machines (TBMs), is subject to many complex and inter-related variables, including national and local politics, public policy, community involvement and media attention û as well as strict environmental and legal requirements. Other restrictions include the time available to adequately investigate geotechnical conditions and viable technical options to determine the best construction methodologies û including selection of tunnel boring machine characteristics and, those construction means and methods suitable for the specific geotechnical and environmental conditions. The latter are, most often, quite imperfectly understood. æGetting it rightÆ implies that an optimal configuration û of machine type, characteristics and associated methodologies û can be found and successfully implemented for a particular project. æFrom the beginningÆ implies that the lack of time issue can be successfully resolved. Within an international context this paper highlights a number of issues of concern which relate to tunnel procurement systems and the ways in which certain key processes are managed during planning, design and construction. The authors argue that there is considerable room for improvement in the way tunnelling projects are undertaken and an approach is discussed which has the potential for substantial gains in cost and schedule and reduction of risk. Savings, however, may only be fully realised if the new methods can be fully implemented by all parties involved. This, we believe, will require the rejection of ætraditionalÆ forms of management and procurement with associated changes in the roles and responsibilities of owner, engineer and contractor. Additionally, risk identification, assessment and mitigation are essential cost and schedule control process which have, to this point, been underutilised by the underground construction industry.

"Regardless of orebody value, at some stage, the pit will reach a depth where the reward for mining wider and/or deeper is not justified by the anticipated returns. ‘Last-blast’ strategies may help to some degree in recovering additional quantities of the resource but when a pit remains, there is often significant value left in the ground. In addition, in many cases, one or many good reasons may dictate why going underground and pursuing the orebody below the pit is also not justifiable. Whereas the company can hopefully move on to other more prospective parts of the orebody, the remaining options for the pit are usually very limited. Typically the pit is either held for potentially more favourable future pit expansion opportunities or it could be used for an alternative purpose, such as tailings or waste storage. This paper will present an alternative option that involves the direct extraction of values using in situ recovery (ISR) methods to recover additional value metals from the walls and/or floor of the pit. ISR involves circulating a fluid through the remaining orebody, solubilising the target metal and subsequently returning the solution to the surface for metal recovery. ISR is not the panacea to all but it has been employed selectively in the minerals industry for some time and the production of metals, such as uranium, rely heavily on this approach. ISR is not yet considered by many operators as an approach to compete with open pit or underground mining, largely because of the perceived limitations of this approach and the perceptions of risk. Rapid recent development of tools and enabling technologies relevant to ISR have made us reconsider the most economic approach to extracting many other metals from known mineral systems, even those currently listed as subeconomic. We suggest that ISR has the potential to make mine operators rethink the end of the pit life and adopt an innovative ISR approach to work toward a more complete recovery of value metals from existing pits.Citation:Kuhar, L L and Robinson, D J, 2016. Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutionsÆ funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industryÆs concept of the unwritten æsocial licence to operateÆ is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

While coal seam gas is considered to be an unconventional gas, the proliferation of areas under exploration and development mean that it is rapidly becoming main stream. The potential of New Zealand's coals to produce coal seam gas has been recognised for some time. However, key market drivers have not been suitable for the progression of this potential into reality. Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, recognising the potential for the gas in New Zealand have initiated what is the largest ever assessment of New Zealand's coal seam gas potential. The premature demise of the giant Maui field has raised the focus of new gas developments and has increased interest in what we are doing. Over the past couple of years Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd have approached the assessment of the coal seam gas potential in a staged programme. Preliminary assessment of the data on the permit areas indicates that the potential resource may be up to 500 PJ. To date, preliminary appraisals have been completed or are underway on a significant number of fields. Exploratory drilling has been completed or initiated on several of those fields, with results from this work being fed into the preliminary modelling as it has become available. Given that in many of these areas there is no pre-existing information concerning their gas potential and world wide experience with lignite is practically nonexistent, it has been a steep learning curve with many surprises. However, initial gas content results and preliminary gas flow models have been on the whole, rather pleasing, with the commerciality of some developments already apparent.

"AEROPHINE® 3418A Promoter is a well-known and widely used collector and is an industry standard for its excellent selectivity and efficacy in the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide ores, particularly those containing silver. Until now, however, it has not found widespread use in primary nickel flotation.In an effort to increase nickel recovery without compromising selectivity over iron sulfides, Western Areas Forrestania Nickel operation trialled the use of AEROPHINE® 3418A as a secondary collector at low dosage. A series of ON/OFF trials were conducted, with the finding that a very low dose of AEROPHINE® 3418A increased nickel recovery by 0.6 per cent compared to using xanthate alone.This paper provides a brief operational history and overview of the Forrestania operations, a description of the trial and an analysis of the results.Citation:Emery, S, Flynn, M, Tan, K and Munro, C, 2016. Ban Houayxai is a gold-silver mine operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited in Laos since 2012. The first two years of operation processed predominately soft oxidised ore but subsequent years were expected to process more fresh hard ore. Fragmentation of the fresh primary ores was also expected to be much coarser than for the soft oxide ores. This coarser and harder ore is expected to significantly reduce mill throughput and mining productivity. The Ban Houayxai management realised the potential downside risk when processing fresh harder ores and implemented a blast optimisation project to deliver finer fresh ore to the mill without unduly increasing blast induced dilution and damage.JKTech and the Ban Houayxai drill and blast team began a joint blast optimisation project in April 2013 to achieve finer fragmentation from fresh ores. This was achieved by modifying the bench geometry, blast patterns and applying exceptionally high levels of quality control during implementation. Blast induced ore loss and dilution was controlled by adjusting the ore blocks for blast movement. Finer fragmentation from these modified designs improved mill throughput for the hard fresh ore by 46 per cent above design on average. Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density backfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the ætraditionalÆ approach to the preparation of pastefill. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producingpaste/high density backfills. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach.This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material. No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mines in Canada.

Mindola mine is currently the deepest mine in the Zambian copper belt. Stoping is currently active to 1330 m below surface with long range plans indicating future production from 1590 m level. The orebody is tabular and dips between 55o to vertical. The thickness varies from 8 to 14 m. The vertical crater retreat method of mining was first introduced at Mindola mine in the late-1980s following several trials that helped define the design criteria for its application. Over the last ten years the method has been continually modified to improve safety and maximise ore production. For example, due to the weakness of some rock units within the orebody formation and the instability of the hanging wall, the last VCR slices are usually between 8 - 10 m thick, and efforts are being made to strictly apply shrinkage method in order to reduce dilution. Recent advances in mining technology in the areas of equipment, blasting techniques, rock mechanics and materials handling have been employed to increase the overall productivity of the mine. Large down-the-hole machines capable of drilling 165 mm diameter blast holes, up to 80 m long are used in stoping. Each stope produces up to 20 000 tonnes of ore per month and can last for three months. Heavy systematic ground support of VCR development has significantly enhanced safety for mining crews and equipment. Crater mining has not only improved productivity and enhanced safety, but also overcome various problems associated with conventional sublevel open stoping previously employed at the mine. This paper discusses the technical and operational aspects of vertical crater retreat mining at Mindola mine during the last ten years. The changes in mining method are often accompanied by changes in mine design, blast design, mining equipment, ground support and operating practices.

"As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. Recognition and resolution of this conflict is necessary if a project is to progress into future development stages, both in a timely manner and with the optimal development alternative and strategy.The challenge for project developers and those conducting the Pre-Feasibility Study is to understand what the key deliverables are (ie an Ore Reserve statement, option selection, business evaluation, forward work plan or risks) and how to follow good practice to ensure that these deliver value.CITATION:Logan, D J and Jackson, J, 2016. Particle sorting allows partially liberated minerals to be separated prior to energy intensive fine grinding. Sensors select particles for separation and air, water or mechanical ejectors are used to physically deflect those selected. To achieve effective separation there has to be sufficient liberation, accurate detection and presentation of a separated monolayer of particles. These three physical constraints determine the particle size limits, the sorting technology utilised, the separation efficiency, and the throughput that can be achieved. The combination of all these factors controls the effective limits on the degree to which sorting can reduce the specific comminution requirements and increasing energy efficiency. The Bradford Process, Australian Patent No. 11253, has had considerable application in the treatment plants of Broken Hill mining companies, and is at present being used by the North Broken Hill Limited for the treatment of weathered slime accumulations.The "Mining and Scientific Press," of 28th September, 1918, describes the Bradford Process at Broken Hill, specially featuring its application to slime material at the Proprietary mine-the home of the process.The points then stressed for galena flotation were acidulated slime pulp (0.025 to 0.030% H2S04) at temperature 85° to 90° F. and suitable time contact, with 1.5 to 2 lb. of sodium hyposulphite (per ton on slime) to permit the released S02 to "wet" or depressthe blende mineral. Also 1.0 to 1.3 lb. of crude sulphur (per ton on slime) was burnt, to supply S02 for keeping the lead concentrate clean during flotation. Pulp density varied from 23 to 26% solids. Since 1918 the process has been simplified in its application.Acidity of circuit, temperature, and sodium hyposulphite have been dispensed with, and now the S02 is practically all obtained by burning crude sulphur. I The plant units now employed for control and absorption of S02 gas constitute the main advance made in process, and these, with other details, are fully explained in this paper.APPLICATION AT BROKEN HILL NORTHThe existing North Broken Hill Limited gravity mill commenced operations on 9th September, 1909.
