A study was undertaken using various methodologies to determine the optimum loading and hauling configuration for different haul routes at Callide Mine, a coal mine located in central Queensland. The study involved development of an effective flat haul model that was used to estimate production rates in truck and shovel circuits that employ two excavators of differing capacities then Queuing Theory to construct a capacity constraint model for scheduling purposes to assist in truck allocation and finally a cost model to determine the most cost effective fleet configuration.The model was calibrated using haul road design and performance data of trucks and excavators currently in use at the mine. The study examined the effects of cycle time for different truck and excavator fleet configurations on production rate and costs.The study found haulage cost was directly related to cycle time while production rate reduced with cycle time. The study indicates the approach taken in combining a cost model with a capacity constraint model offers a simple and effective method of scheduling an optimum number of trucks in a haulage circuit.CITATION:Campbell, S and Hagan, P, 2012. Nowadays, one of the main problems in current flotation plants and new projects is the significant decrease in feed grades and changes in the mineral composition, which has an important effect on the mineral liberation and associations. Additionally, flotation plants usually operate with feed throughput higher than the original design, which has a significant impact on the feed particle size. All these conditions affect metallurgical performance, and must be evaluated and addressed, by improving control strategies for banks optimisation. For this purpose, the flotation of valuable minerals along the circuits requires better understanding, considering the compromise between performance and selectivity in flotation circuits. This paper presents a characterisation of the different minerals recovered along industrial flotation circuits. Plant sampling campaigns, performed in a copper industrial concentrator in Chile, provided the data for the study. Two rougher flotation banks consisting of cells of 130 m3 and 300 m3 were analysed. All the samples from the industrial surveys were analysed by screening and mineralogy, and the mineral recovery along the circuits was evaluated per particle size class, liberation class, type of associations, and others. Additionally, operating data on froth depth profiles complemented the evaluation of the mineral composition of concentrate streams, along the circuit. The results allowed for identifying and quantifying the main factors that affect the copper recovery and concentrate grade along the flotation banks. It was found that minerals with liberation lower than 50 per cent have a significant impact on the recovery. On the other hand, the decrease in the Cu grade in concentrates along the flotation circuits is mainly due to the relative increase of middling minerals (less liberated), non-valuable floatable minerals, such as free pyrite, and gangue entrainment. The characterisation of the gangue entrainment flow rate along the flotation banks showed a strong relationship with froth depth, which becomes more critical towards the last cells of the banks.

The mining industry needs to attract and recruit young talented people. An important task is, therefore, to create an attractive mining workplace that engages with, and motivates youngsters who are not particularly interested in working in the industry. This paper aims to illustrate a way forward for the mining industry to form healthy and safe workplaces honouring key components such as knowledge, skill, co-operation, continual development and acceptance of diversity. This is a way to create a vision of healthy and safe mining work. The mining industry must work towards zero vision; a future without accidents and hazardous environments. In this paper the authors discuss different aspects of an ‘attractive workplace’ and summarises lessons learnt in 26 statements dealing with safety, both physical and social work environments, and social responsibility. The authors hope these recommendations will provide some guidance for how attractive workplaces should be designed for future deep mining.The paper is based on lessons from two large European projects, a Swedish-Polish project: The Smart Mine of the Future; and a European Union project: Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems (SIMS). "It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (<1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month. Charcoal produced from Syzygium Zeylanicum (local name: Yakada Maran = iron killer) trees were widely used in ancient Sri Lankan iron smelting practices. In this study, relict charcoal from Syzygium Zeylanicum tree trunks, branches and leaves were analysed for the first time. Unusually high concentrations of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4.H2O – CaOX) crystals were identified preserved in plant cell structures by optical mineralogy and SEM analysis. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) of CaOX showed that it displayed three decomposition stages, releasing H2O at 177°C, CO at 493°C and CO2 at 750°C. Following the identification of CaOX in Sri Lankan charcoal, a series of reduction tests on a low-grade, high-P iron ore fine sample (high SiO2: 5 wt. per cent; Al2O3 4 wt. per cent; P: 0.135 wt. per cent) doped with CaOX were carried out at various temperatures. Samples were analysed by XRF, SEM and EPMA to determine the degree of reduction and the effect of reduction on the deportment of impurities, in particular P. Reduction tests at 800°C and 900°C with 5 wt. per cent CaOX showed that the reducibility increased to over 65 per cent. At temperatures above 900°C, P was located mainly within a fine, interstitial glass matrix suggesting that the CaOX flux enhanced removal of P from iron-rich pre-cursor phases to form glass. Preliminary magnetic separation tests to remove the P-rich interstitial glass were unsuccessful due to the fine grain size. Further complete reduction tests at temperatures above 1200°C with addition of coke to convert the iron oxides into Fem were conducted with samples doped with 10 wt. per cent CaOX, 10 wt. per cent CaCO3 and equivalent undoped samples. Results confirmed the preferential P-incorporation into a glassy matrix in the CaOX samples although some rare P incorporation into the metallic phase was noted. Experimental results, including comparisons with the CaCO3 fluxed and undoped samples, are discussed in view of the potential for CaOX flux for removing P (and potentially other impurities) from P-rich iron ores.

"The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. Computer simulation modelling (discrete event) has been used at Olympic Dam (OD) to model the handling of ore from the point of extraction at the stope drawpoint through to the ore stockpile on the surface. Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of such large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. In this instance it can be utilised during the early stages of a project, for example, as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phase. A well constructed and tested simulation model provides a sound base upon which informed business decisions can be made. Furthermore, the behaviour of the model with varying inputs can help build a solid understanding of how the asset behaves when varying inputs and constraints are imposed upon it and, as a result, the major points of leverage that designers and operations personnel have to affect the real world behaviour of those assets. Better decisions can be made when the right facts can be examined, various options explored and conclusions tested. Simulation modelling is one of the tools available to make this process work.

The efficient operation of large haul trucks in large open pit mines requires an economic trade off between the haul route quality, the haul truck payloads and the level of haul truck reliability. This paper describes an investigation into the relation- ship between haul route surface quality and the level of structural reliability of a haul truck main frame. An instrumentation system for unattended recording of data on a haul truck operating normally in a mine and com- puter based analytical procedures were developed and used to identify which road segments contribute significantly to fatigue cracking at various sections of a haul truck main frame. The Porgcra gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver- spha le rite-galena-pyrite mineralization is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbon- aceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralized zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralization occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralization occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralization have been Recognized.

Heatings, fires and explosions in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland coal mines since 1972, are reviewed. Geological and mine settings are outlined. Where available, gas analysis and critical decisions are discussed. This paper updates work by NSW Department of Mineral Resources (1995) and the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy in a report on fires and explosion in Queensland coal mines (Richardson and Ham, 1996). Incident data has important applications in terms of evidence-based risk assessment and identifying key issues to be integrated into competency based training programs. Predictive indicators are reviewed in terms of coal parameters in seams where the incidents occurred.

Mine projects are complex opportunities that demand a constant assessment of uncertainty, ie risk and upside potential. This is because the value of a mine project is typically influenced by many underlying economic and physical uncertainties, such as metal/mineral prices, metal/mineral grades, costs, schedules, quantities, and environmental issues, amongst others, which are not known with much certainty at the beginning of the project. But, is uncertainty an enemy or an ally of the mine planner/analyst? To answer this question, this paper first assesses and elaborates upon the general concept of uncertainty. It then looks at the different sources of uncertainty in a mining project, such as the orebody, costs and product price uncertainties, and their effect on the final project value. Next, a general?review?of current mine evaluation techniques highlighting their limitations when dealing with uncertainty is made. Finally, an extended evaluation and risk management framework that addresses the existing uncertainty in the (greenfield/brownfield) mine evaluation process is proposed. One important characteristic of this framework is that it uses and manages uncertainty in order to generate additional value to the project; this is done through operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine planners to minimise/maximise project risk/upside-potential giving a more realistic estimate of the projectÆs market value - this is shown in practical and simple examples occurring at different stages of a mine project, such as exploration and operation. High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology is a novel process that could potentially be the step-change needed in ore processability in the mining industry. The propensity of high voltage pulses towards mineral-enriched ore particles during treatment makes this technology selective and has the potential to enable ore pre-concentration by size separation. In this study, the potential for pre-concentration of a low grade copper-gold ore sample subjected to HVP pretreatment is investigated and compared to that achievable after mechanical breakage in JKMRC’s rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). The data show that a better pre-concentration result can be achieved after HVP processing than conventional breakage. The gold pre-concentration potential is much better than that observed for copper. 4D HVP pre-concentration characteristic curves were produced to assess the metallurgical performance possible as a function of energy input. The case study shows that when targeting a nominal metal recovery of 90 per cent for gold, the HVP pre-concentration technique can split the low grade ore (0.9 ppm gold and 0.28 per cent copper in the feed size 26.5-37.5 mm) into two components – a low grade oversize material (0.3 ppm gold and 0.15 per cent copper) and a high grade undersize material (1.0 ppm gold and 0.3 per cent copper). The mass split to the low grade is 23 per cent. Under this mass split scenario, gold recovery to screen undersize is 90 per cent and copper recovery is 85 per cent. The HVP treatment of this feed size requires a specific energy (spark) of 2.8 kWh/t.There is further research that would be required before industrial uptake of the HVP pre-concentration technology would be possible. On 26 June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19 000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine, which caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at NormandyÆs zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the mine adjacent to Scuddles, Gossan Hill had progressed to a point where a self-supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high-grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16 July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in situ performance.

GOLD, the most important and highly coveted valuable metal, is being sought and exploited in almost all the geological environ- ments by the developed, developing and underdeveloped coun- tries of the world. Brazil, one of the five largest countries of the world, has similar geological and lithological environments as of Africa, Australia and Canada and also produces this noble metal. With the recent gold rush in Serra Pelada Hill in Para State of Brazil and the consequent migration of a large number of enter- prises to the Amazon region in search of geological conditions similar to that of Serra Pelada, the status of Brazil in gold produc- tion has been considerably elevated to be among the first five of the world. The principal geological environments or the lithologies where gold can be explored are the greenstone belts, banded iron for- mations, quartz lodes and placers; and the tectonic controls like shear zones in these horizons, or the tectonic relics or the annular- structures that limit the quartz vein systems in felsic as well as volcanogenic systems and epithermal models. In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

The exposed high face of Kerr's Quarry has dominated the township of Ferntree Gully for half a century. The near perpendicular face of bare dacite rock is a crumbling scar in an area of significant natural beauty. Apart from being unsightly, the face is a hazard for any person who approaches too close to its base or to the top edge. The height and the precipitous nature of this man made wall of rock is hazardous indeed. (fig. 1) The rock face is on the municipal boundary between the Shire of Sherbrooke and the City of Knox. This boundary was drawn when partition of the Shire of Ferntree Gully took place. There are many advantages in benching back the wall of the quarry but to do so the operation, located in Knox would need to extend into Sherbrooke. There are planning difficulties involved in such a manoeuvre, but during 1972, at a meeting of Cabinet Ministers, it was agreed that the matter be resolved.

Environmental regulators are increasingly adopting risk-based approaches to protect aquatic ecosystems. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) and the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) (2000) introduced a risk-based approach to water quality guidelines that use decision frameworks to adapt water quality guidelines to local environmental conditions. Environmental quality objectives are no longer a simple ‘pass or fail’ number such as restricting total suspended solids (TSS) concentration to a specified limit for a particular rainfall event. This approach ignores spatial and temporal variability and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. The risk-based approach establishes levels where adverse effects may occur. If these objectives are not met, further risk-based investigation is undertaken to assess the potential impact to the ecosystem. Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a dynamic simulation to predict the variability of sediment discharges, which is applicable for risk-based impact assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The application of the methodology over the life of a mine site is illustrated using a proposed South Pacific mine.The site location is in extremely rugged terrain with a high annual rainfall of approximately 4.7 m. There were two major sediment ponds proposed to reduce sediment discharges. A sediment and hydrology model was developed in Goldsim to provide daily estimates of run-off flows and sediment concentrations. A modified algorithm based on the Australian water balance model was created and incorporated into the Goldsim model and calibrated using recorded field data.The sediment module was developed based on a Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) assessment, an annual prediction of soil loss over a catchment. A land-use type erosion vector was developed for different land-use types and for each of the subcatchments, a subcatchment erodibility vector was calculated. This vector and the daily rainfall erosivity factor were used to estimate the daily soil loss. The estimated soil loss and the modelled run-off yielded predictions of daily sediment concentrations. Finally, a sediment settling module was used to predict the daily efficiency of the sediment ponds and hence discharged sediment concentrations.The results of this modelling form the first part of a quantitative risk-based assessment into suspended solids impacts. The second part is the assessment of the effects of these predicted TSS concentrations on aquatic ecology. As part of the feedback-loop required in a risk management framework, if the environmental quality objectives are not met then further management decisions and actions may be required to reduce the risks presented by suspended solids. This may include modifications to: the mine-development plan; construction techniques and scheduling; processing techniques; rehabilitation strategies; or hard-engineering solutions such as sediment basins or flocculation.The Goldsim water-balance model provides a quick and efficient method of testing potential remedial actions on predicted sediment loads and concentrations. In combination with a cost-benefit assessment, options for reducing sediment releases from the mine site can be effectively and quantitatively compared thereby providing mine operators with a basis for decision-making. Regulators can also be satisfied that potential impacts to aquatic ecology have been comprehensively assessed and the necessary management decisions have been initiated to limit risk to the environment.CITATION:Ind, M and Usher, B, ?2014. The Mount Isa copper deposit is located adjacent to the city of Mount Isa, Queensland, and lies within a series of Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Superbasins. The deposit is hosted almost entirely within the Urquhart Shale (US), a unit of the Mount Isa Group sediments and part of the Isa Superbasin. The copper mineralisation is separated into two distinct orebodies: the X41 mine (1100 and 1900 orebodies) and the Enterprise mine (3000 and 3500 orebodies). The orebodies are situated in the hanging wall of the major controlling structures, the Paroo Fault, which has juxtaposed older basement Eastern Creek Volcanics against the younger Mount Isa Group sediments cf 1655 ± 4 Ma. Conjecture remains over the exact timing of this thrust event. However, it is clear that inflections on the Paroo Fault have a close association with the orebodies and are an important structural feature in the mineralisation of the Mount Isa copper deposit.The life-of-mine is reducing steadily and new geomechanical modelling techniques were employed to target structurally controlled mineralised zones in three dimensions. Following a structural review of the mine using underground mapping, structural data and core shed observations, a conceptual 3D mine model was constructed utilising existing data modelled in MineSight®. This conceptual model included all the main lithological units and structures. The conceptual model aimed to test the effects of deformation on the main lithological and structural components of the system and attempted to highlight areas of anomalous stress and strain that may indicate a higher likelihood of fluid focusing and mineralisation potential. This project was focused on testing the latter stages of a D3 event (NE–SW compression) and D4 event (SE–NW compression), which are considered to be responsible for the current location of the mineralisation.The fully coupled 3D finite element analysis models resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two deformation events. The NE–SW D3 simulation provided the best correlation with the known distribution of mineralisation. This event also indicated several areas on the Paroo Fault and within the US that have potential to host further areas of mineralisation. The SE–NW D4 simulation provided less of a correlation with known mineralised zones. However, this event may have been responsible for post mineralisation re-mobilisation of copper on a relatively small scale. Areas of maximum shear strain, shear stress, volumetric strain and fluid flow correlated well with areas of minimum principal stress and provided the best overall match with known mineralised zones. Furthermore, several additional highlighted areas provide a high potential for further discovery of copper mineralisation.
