Systematic near-field vibration monitoring of stope blasts was carried out in a large, deep underground mine. A total of 31 production blasts were studied in order to investigate the effectiveness of existing blast designs. This involved the vertical retreat mining method, which requires drilling a raise bore or blasting a slot raise (typically 1.22 m in diameter) using large diameter boreholes (165 mm). The diagnostic technique employed multistation near-field monitoring of blasts with high-g (100 g) and high-frequency (>10 kHz) triaxial accelerometers. The amplitude of the vibrations is correlated with the strain energy transmitted from each explosive deck. The results showed that more than 30 per cent of the explosive decks contributed little energy to the rock breakage process in these blasts, and an equal number contributed only inadequately. These findings are indicative of serious blast malfunctions. The problems can be traced to inadequate deck blast design and possibly to drill hole deviation. Following the preparation of tantalum oxide and carbide (1) an investigation of the details relating to the production of tantalum metal powder was planned. From the literature (2) it was evident that tantalum could be produced either by reduction of potassium tantalum fluoride with an alkali metal or by electrolysis of a fused salt mixture containing a tantalum compound. The latter method appeared to be the more suitable and, as there was considerable divergence of opinion in the literature as to the nature of the reactions involved, it was decided to study the electrolytic process. The ultimate aim in any case was to produce tantalum pOWder for use in an investigation of the problems relating to the preparation of consolidated tantalum.FACTORS GOVERNING ELECTROLYSISAfter a few preliminary exploratory electrolyses several factors which needed amplification were revealed. These will be mentioned before the details of the electrolysis experiments are given.COMPOSITION OF THE BATHWithout the knowledge gained in the preliminary experiments it would be thought that the best material for the bath would be that one which underwent electrolytic decomposition. Consider what at first appeared the most likely - namely - potassium tantalum fluoride. The melting point of K2TaF7 was determined to be 630°C with volatilization and decomposition taking place at that temperature so that it would not have been very satisfactory.

Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

Miners and mineral explorers are concerned at the increasingly hostile environment being generated towards their industry and their profession. There is little official or public recognition that the mining industry is essential for the maintenance of the country's standard of living; a large part of this hostile feeling is caused by the assumption that mining destroys large tracts of our attractive countryside. This paper presents a historic review of the impact on the countryside of the major land using groups commencing with the Polynesian migration. European farming practices, subsequent expansion of the urban dweller and the land management practices of the two Government Departments, Lands and Survey and New Zealand Forest Service who between them control half of the total land area, are discussed. Estimates of total land area to date, directly and indirectly affected by mining have been calculated and a broad estimate of 18 000 ha or 1/1500 of total land area is indicated; current annual mineral production requires some 240 ha. These gross areas take no account of subsequent land rehabilitation, its improvement upon the original in some cases and the recreational, historic and aesthetic areas gained. Comparisons are then drawn with some current land practices in New Zealand.

Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.

The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

In flotation cells, especially in large flotation units, froth management is a crucial variable that should be considered during the design phase or optimised to improve the performance of existing flotation circuits. This paper presents a simulation evaluation of the effect of launder design on the metallurgical performance of an industrial flotation circuit consisting of five TankCell® e630 (630 m3 ) cells in a Cu rougher duty. This analysis was carried out using a new industrial simulator, which was built on a wide database collected from many industrial concentrators. This tool is currently incorporated into HSC Chemistry® software and allows evaluation of the effect of launder design on mineral froth recovery, water recovery, entrainment, and other variables to be quantified. The industrial flotation circuit was evaluated under different launder design scenarios, considering an actual flotation circuit that includes TankCell® e630 cells for calibration and as a reference (baseline). Firstly, two different designs were evaluated in the full circuit: a standard launder design and a new launder technology. It was found that the new launder technology enabled improvement of the mineral recovery along the circuit, mainly for coarse particles, due to the improvement in froth mineral recovery. Next, the partial upgrade of the launder design along the circuit was analysed. Thus, the new launder technology was evaluated in the first and the last two cells of the bank. The results showed that upgrading the launders in different cells along the circuit delivered an increase in the final recovery with respect to the baseline, with a partial impact on the concentrate grade. However, these changes are less than those when evaluating the full upgrade scenario. A partial launder upgrade either in the first or last two cells of the bank showed similar final recoveries, but the latter enabled a slightly higher concentrate grade (about 1 per cent higher) to be achieved. Finally, the evaluation of launder design using the industrial simulator made it possible to estimate its effect on variables that are not commonly obtained from plant surveys, including froth recovery per particle size, collection recovery per particle size and liberation, gangue entrainment and bubble loading grade.

Proper understanding and management of production drilling in sublevel cave (SLC) mines is essential for meeting production targets and for avoiding inefficiencies that could lead to costly bottlenecks. In many SLC mine management models drilling is considered a derivative activity of firing and bogging. Its scheduling is considered to be implied in a firing schedule and given an arbitrary target completion, ‘several weeks’ or ‘a month’, ahead of production firing. Like development, drilling activities are most efficient when conducted separately from other production activities. Unlike development, however, it is not apparent during planning and feasibility how far in advance of firing drilling activities ought to be conducted. This paper presents a method of defining a minimum threshold of drilled stocks above which drilling, firing and bogging operations occur most efficiently. As an example, the drilling activities, procedures, and maintenance at Glencore Xstrata’s Ernest Henry Mine are presented, and the larger scale consequences of improvements to these areas are presented to illustrate their importance in the operation of an SLC mine.CITATION:Beal, C, 2014. The Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north-east of Cloncurry in the Mount Isa – Cloncurry mineral district of northwest Queensland. The EHM orebody is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of one per cent copper, 0.5 g/t gold and 23 per cent magnetite, with current reserves of approximately 88 Mt.The copper concentrator is a single line plant with a nominal throughput rate of 1300 tonnes per hour. An average of 350 000 tonnes of concentrate is produced each year containing around 100 000 tonnes of copper metal and 120 000 troy ounces of gold.In December 2009, Xstrata Copper announced approval of a $589 M investment to extend the life of EHM to at least 2024, through the transformation of open pit mining operations to a major underground mine together with the construction of an associated magnetite extraction plant.The EHM magnetite plant extracts the magnetite from the copper concentrator’s tailings stream. It will produce approximately 1.2 Mt of magnetite concentrate per annum at full capacity for export to Asia, making EHM Queensland’s first iron ore concentrate exporter. Construction of the magnetite extraction plant commenced in July 2010 and was completed in January 2011.This paper gives an overview of the development of the EHM magnetite extraction plant flow sheet from the early mineralogy and laboratory test work through to the plant commissioning and early operation of the base plant. It has a major focus on the commissioning learnings from the plant start-up and includes a review of the operational performance of the plant versus original design and expectations.

Gold recovery by the cyanidation process is often accompanied by the leaching of other species. This leads to the depletion of the level of free cyanide and oxygen available for gold cyanidation. The largest proportion of the consumed cyanide is diverted by the cyanicides (eg S, Cu, Zn, Fe, etc) into non-valuable complexes.COREMÆs Extractive Metallurgy team has been conducting a research program on the improvement of the gold cyanidation process. As a part of this program, the current study aims to investigate the effect of certain operating parameters on the reactions involved during preoxidation and cyanidation. Flotation tailings and single mineral samples such as pyrite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite, along with their different combinations, were analysed to highlight the influence of ore mineralogy on the operating conditions. The effects of different kinds of oxidants (oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ferricyanide and ozone) and chemical additives (ammonium sulfate) were investigated.Experiments conducted in alkaline solutions reveal that mineralogy is a key parameter since pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite react quite differently during preoxidation and cyanidation. A significant increase in sulfur dissolution, especially on pyrite, was observed by applying preoxidation. H2O2 preoxidation showed a positive effect on increasing sulfate formation, a desirable by-product from the cyanide consumption point of view. Preoxidation of synthetic ores with ferricyanide resulted in boosting thiosulfate formation. Tests conducted on flotation tailings from a polymetallic mine revealed that a short preoxidation increases the dissolution of the ore leading to higher gold recovery and lower cyanide consumption. Regarding the formation of thiocyanate, the most undesirable by-product of the cyanidation, ferricyanide and ozone were found particularly efficient to hinder their formation. Reconciliation is a powerful tool used by mining operations to compare the mass and grade of ore produced with what was estimated before mining. The primary objective of reconciliation is to verify that the estimated planned metal production is achieved during processing, allowing issues to be identified for which adjustments can be made throughout the mining value chain to improve recovery and maximise efficiency. Traditionally, the mine plan is based on estimated mine grades using sampled exploration drill hole or blasthole grades. Reconciliation discrepancies between the mine plan and mill are common due to such factors as insufficient or non-representative sampling, poorly conceived models, or unrecognised blast movement. MineSense Technologies Limited® (MTL) has developed an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor-based ore classification system that is installed on mining equipment to provide real-time grade estimates of run-of-mine material at bucket, truck, or belt-scale. Bucket level grade estimates provide insights into grade variations at the mine face that were never before available. This data set eliminates some of the leading causes of reconciliation discrepancies and enables tracking of tonnages and grades from the mine face to the processing plant at bucket resolution with confidence. Bucket-by-bucket grades at the mine face enable dynamic optimisation of the mine plan to stabilise the mill feed grade through blending of mine and stockpile loads. Beyond stabilising feed grade, Mine to Mill reconciliation combined with the full XRF spectrum response can generate proxy relationships to ore characteristics like hardness and recovery. These properties can then be predicted at the mine face, enabling further optimisation of the downstream mill feed, not only for grade, but also for power and water consumption, reagent addition, and recovery. This paper presents the benefits of MTL technology for grade reconciliation and mill performance optimisation at a Cu Mine in BC (Canada).

Mining and processing of pyrite ore at Iron Duke Mine, north east of Zimbabwe, generates large quantities of acidic mine water as a result of the oxidation of iron sulfides on exposure to air and water used in the drilling and blasting operations. The acid mine drainage (AMD) contains elevated levels of dissolved Fe, Al, Mn and sulfate and has characteristic pH values ranging from about 0.50 to 3.00. Handling and disposal of such a drainage places significant impacts on the economics of the mining operation due to the corrosive nature of the drainage on infrastructure, the limitations placed on water reuse and discharge to the environment under a new law governing effluent discharge. Treated sludge at Iron Duke is chemically unstable, changing pH from ~7 to ~3 within four days after deposition in the evaporation ponds. The effluent does not meet the permitted level of neutral pH, 500 mg/l sulfate and less than 2000 mg/l total dissolved solids. Excessive acid seepage from the evaporation ponds has resulted in contamination of the ground water below the ponds area, which shows high mean annual levels of iron (368.67 mg/l), sulfate (1702.89 mg/l) and low pH (2.86) in addition to other pollutants. This poor quality seepage infiltrates into the nearby Yellow Jacket River, contaminating the public water source. Furthermore, a deterioration of the land area and vegetation adjacent to the tailings dump is also observed. Understanding the controls on the neutralisation of acidic drainage and long-term sludge stability after placement in evaporation ponds is essential to minimise costs of closure requirements and for the protection of environment and human health. This study examined the effects of the master variables pH, redox potential, acidity and alkalinity on acid neutralisation. The results indicate that ferrous hydroxides are not as stable as ferric hydroxides and that proper oxidation of iron also leads to better sludge stability, higher treatment efficiency and a manageable sludge viscosity. Metal hydrolysis and secondary mineral formation at the evaporation ponds under a wide range of pH and redox conditions is responsible for equilibrium shifts in metal reactions, resulting in high potential for metal leaching and mobility. Mechanisms of metal attenuation are also discussed.

The Synthetic Rutile (SR) plant operations, North Capel, produce electrostatic precipitator (ESP) fume and kiln scrubber residue. Typically ESP contains about 18 per cent Ti, 13 per cent Fe, 0.5 per cent Mn, eight per cent Si, six per cent Al, 16 per cent C, 0.9 per cent Zn, 0.6 per cent Pb, 300 ppm As, 300 ppm Cr and 5 ppm Cd. These wastes are held in a storage dam together with neutralised acid effluent (AE) liquor. A project was initiated to treat the fume and produce a benign residue that could be delivered to landfill, reducing dam space storage. Plant AE, containing free acid (9 - 14 g/L), Fe (6 - 7 g/L) and Mn (1 g/L), was used to leach ESP. The degree of extraction achieved for various elements include about 20 per cent Zn, almost 50 per cent As, five per cent Al, 0.4 per cent Pb and 15 per cent Cd. Extraction was most effective at pH The residue from AE leaching still contained Pb. TCLP tests of the leach residue produced Pb extraction significantly higher than the 0.1 ppm stipulated by Class 2 landfill guidelines. Other elements (eg As, Cd, Cr) successfully met the limits. Further leaching of the residue with EDTA extracted up to 65 per cent of Pb content. TCLP tests on treated residue showed Pb leaching potential of Lead was removed from the leach circuit as the sulphate by acidification of EDTA leach liquor, allowing EDTA to be recycled. The study showed that one waste stream can be used to treat another and help reduce plant waste.

Without adequate soil available, it is difficult to rehabilitate a large area of acid mine waste dump with sustainable plant communities, which has a strong potential acid generation. In the present project, paste tailings capping method has been put forward to reconstruct plant ecosystem on acid mine waste rock dump. This rehabilitation method uses paste tailings as capillary break and plant growth media. The tailings used contained 26.3 per cent of particles of less than 20 ¦m which satisfy the requirement of grain of paste tailings preparation. The tailings are not acid- producing materials. In addition to Cu, total contents of Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As and Ni in tailings are lower than those in local soil. Paste tailings concentration 70 per cent ~ 72 per cent was prepared by concentrating ten per cent tailings by using polypropylenecrylic sodium as flocculation. The potential pollution risks are low by using paste tailings as capillary break layer. Plants directly grown in the tailings did not particularly accumulate Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As, Ni in roots, stem and leaves, which were 0.01 ~ 1.6 times of those grown in soil.CITATION:Yibin, Z, Lianbi, Z, Bin, P and Youhong, Z, 2012. NQ Minerals PLC, through Hellyer Gold Mines Pty Ltd, plans to reprocess the contents of the Hellyer tailings dam to produce lead/silver concentrate, zinc concentrate and pyrite concentrate (containing Au and Ag). This paper discusses the project development, mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry of processing Hellyer tailings and the associated environmental benefits. The Hellyer and Fossey orebodies were volcanic hosted polymetallic massive sulphide deposits located within the Mount Read volcanic arc of western Tasmania. Mineralisation was hosted in massive sulphide (pyrite) and comprised predominantly of sphalerite, with lesser galena, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The Hellyer orebody was mineralogically complex (fine grained) and was treated through differential flotation with initially modest recoveries. Fossey ore processing characteristics were similar to those of Que River ore and simpler than Hellyer but treatment still resulted in significant grades in flotation tailings. Between 1966 and 1976, Australia moved from being a non-producer to a position of meeting more than ten per cent of world nickel demand. New mine developments beginning the early-1990s have the promise of more than doubling the country's world market share - from around eight per cent to perhaps close to 20 per cent. This new surge in activity - the so-called `second nickel boom' - has led to several developments which seem likely to have similar economic impacts to those of the late- 1960s and early-1970s. There are, however, some notable differences this time around. The impact of long distance commuting over the past 30 years has changed the regional development scenario. The gold industry is much stronger in Australia than it was in the late-1960s and this helps to place the importance of new nickel discoveries in a more realistic perspective. As potential players have jockeyed to complete feasibility studies and move into construction and production phases of new long-life mines, established suppliers clearly seem to be taking actions to discourage the newcomers. In what appears to be a classic oligipolistic market situation, the heightening of perceived entry barriers to the industry appears to be a particularly visible strategy undertaken. In the current scenario as well, greater vertical integration among producers appears a significant influence on market power.

The Waihi Gold Mine is situated in a high rainfall area (annual average of over 2 m) on the North Island of New Zealand. Water treatment and discharge at the mine has been ongoing for the last 25 years. The first water treatment plant consisted of a æstandardÆ water treatment facility (ferric chloride precipitation) and cyanide detoxification. With time the project has expanded and the volumes of water increased requiring additional treatment methods (reverse osmosis) to meet the water quality for discharge. Dr Wark said: I have not come to Broken Hill to tell you how to conduct flotation operations; indeed, during my short stay here I have already learned much concerning the process, of the many difficulties which have been overcome, and of those still awaiting solution. My purpose tonight is rather different. All who have been concerned with the operation of the flotation process must have wondered, like myself, why the process is possible at all. In particular, why can minerals which are heavier than water be made to l10at to its surface; why do certain minerals float while others do not; and what are the functions of the added chemicals?I have been asked to describe tonight some of the ways which have been adopted in the Melbourne University laboratory in an endeavour to find answers to these. questions. Knowing that you are just as interested in them as we are and, furthermore, appreciating that were it not for the co-operation of the Broken Hill companies our researches would not have been possible, I regard it as a high privilege that I should have been invited to tell you of our work. Before doing so, I would like to tell you the reasons why the work was started and for whom it has been carried out. Soon after the flotation process had been successfully exploited on a commercial scale a number of investigators sought to determine the theoretical basis upon which it rests, and our knowledge of the function of the added chemicals has been considerably broadened by the published accounts of many workers, particularly in recent years of those working in American universities.The Australian metallurgist played, as you know, a part second to none in the early development of the process, and Australia's mining fields had already reaped such rich rewards from it that, late in 1929, it was felt by some of the leaders of the industry that we should take a larger part in the efforts being made to extend the knowledge of the principles upon which the process is based.Accordingly, several companies - the Broken Hill South, the North Broken Hill, The Zinc Corporation, the Electrolytic Zinc and the Mount Lyell Companies - established a laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of investigating the principles underlying flotation.Subsequently another British company, the Burma Corporation Ltd, expressed a desire to co-operate.

The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.
